The Official Magazine of the River Walk

Publisher Louis Doucette Louis@travelingblender.com Editor Paula Schechter editor@paseodelrio.com

Dear Frugal Travelers, I’m a penny pincher. My mom says I still have the first dollar I ever made. I’m also extravagant. My friends say I throw lavish parties and take the best vacations. A lot of us are like that. We save where we can, so we can spend where we like. The September issue of RIO Magazine is dedicated to enjoying the River Walk, San Antonio and your entire visit without breaking the bank. You can spend (pun intended) many fun-filled days enjoying activities that are free or nearly free and then splurge on a great restaurant, a second round of drinks or tickets to a Spurs basketball game. Some of our coolest attractions are always free, from bat-watching to the Alamo and Mission Trail to the spectacular sound and light show on Main Plaza. Many museums and attractions offer free days or evenings. Take advantage of them, and you’ll have a great stay that doesn’t even dent your budget. Check out my personal favorite freebies in the Editor’s Top Ten list. And if you happen to be in town September 8-10 you can enjoy the biggest bargain of all: Bud Light, The Taste. For a pittance of a price, each night you can sample cool dishes at 10 or more of the hottest restaurants downtown and on the River Walk. Tickets sold at the door. Feel Free to Enjoy the River Walk

By Susan Yerkes All Photos on this page by: Mark Menjivar/San Antonio River Authority

A leisurely stroll or brisk jog along the lushly landscaped banks of the river early in the morning, when the air is cool and the light is soft provides treasured memories for visitors and residents alike. During the day, the scene heats up, but down on the river there’s an oasis of shade beneath the towering old cypress trees. And when night falls, a myriad of colored lights illuminate the lively riverside. While the sheer beauty of the River Walk has made it one of America’s most popular visitor attractions, there’s also plenty to do without busting your budget. September is packed with free, fun events, starting with Labor Day weekend, when San Antonio’s Magik Theatre will transform La Villita, the historic riverside village in the heart of downtown, on the adjacent Arneson River Theater into a full-blown Renaissance Festival. Live performances and movies of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, along with falconry, fire eaters, fencing, magicians and more will entertain the whole family – and it’s all free. (Check out the schedule at www.magiktheatre.org)

Further along the river banks, the Labor Day Arts &Crafts Show, Sept. 4-7, will transform the riverbank into a gallery of colorful treasures to browse or take home. Sept. 12, La Villita’s old limestone walls will ring with the joyful sounds of the International Accordion Festival, another free annual event that draws musicians from around the world. The week of Sept. 16, the city celebrates Mexico’s Independence Day, and businesses along the River Walk will lift a cold cerveza to the celebration with festive specials. (Visitors note: this is the perfect time to wear one of those huge, colorful straw sombreros you’ll find on sale in nearby Market Square.) On Sept. 19, experience traditional Mexican culture at a free mariachi concert at the Arneson River Theater, featuring the top high school mariachis in Texas and stirring performances by the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center’s Dance Company. In addition to all the festivities that enliven the River Walk, there’s an impressive permanent art gallery along (and between) the banks of the stream. The river’s Museum Reach stretches north to two spectacularly reimagined historic breweries – the San Antonio Museum of Art and the

The best things in life are often free,

and San Antonio’s River Walk is a great example.

At Ninth Street, glittering fiber-optic terrazzo benches and vibrant color cubes highlight the bridge structure. Wave your hands over the surfaces of the cubes to watch the light-play. At night, bands of color across the bridge ceiling make a glowing portal. In the river bend near the giant fish, a giant jaguar head at street level leads down into the Grotto, a fantastic, dream-like, three-story cave with splashing waterfalls, benches and a thatched-roof picnic area – a magnificent construction of faux-bois (false wood) concrete art. Even the bridges above the river are works of art, from the historic stone or iron structures to the new art installations along the railings. Many of the art works feature plaques with QR codes you can scan into a smart phone for information of the piece. And for a complete listing of Museum Reach art and more, check out the San Antonio River Foundation’s web site, www.sariverfoundation.org.

Another recent monumental addition to the River Walk stands out beside the new Briscoe Western Art Museum – “Coming Home to the Briscoe,” a three-ton bronze sculpture of a traditional Texas vaquero (cowboy) driving his longhorns up the river bank.

lively Pearl Complex. In recent years, artists from San Antonio and around the U.S. have contributed site-specific artworks that are now part of the must-see list for any visit, and perfect settings for Instagram selfies. Among the most spectacular are the lightworks at various overpasses. At Camden Street, a school of giant, illuminated sunfish swim through the sky. (Around dusk most evenings, a colony of bats emerges from their roosts in the beams under the bridge – another popular sight.) At the Brooklyn Street-McCullough overpass, shifting colorblock panels create a flickering, vibrant illusion on the walls and water as you walk past.

A smaller, but equally significant new bronze piece was unveiled this summer at the foot of the Commence Street Bridge by the Republic of Texas restaurant with its colorful Texas flag-themed umbrellas – a bust of architect Robert H.H. Hugman, the visionary “Father of the River Walk.” See his story in video on YouTube type in key words Hugman River Walk.

Back in 1929, when city fathers decided to pave over the river downtown, Hugman designed a revolutionary “American Venice” idea – a tree-shaded, river-level passage lined with shops and restaurants, where gondolas would ferry folks up and down the stream. It took almost a decade, but with support from the powerful Conservation Society and a few key businessmen, Hugman finally saw his dream begin to come true. It took decades more for the fuller realization of the dream. In 1968, HemisFair prompted a downtown revitalization that finally led to today’s lively River Walk. The story, a video tribute and fabulous old photos of the River Walk’s beginnings are online at www.hugmantour.com. There’s also a downloadable mobile tour for smart phones, keyed to bronze plaques at a dozen of the most important tour stops. And it’s all free. From history to art to peaceful nature to the vibrant pulse of the city’s colorful culture – you’ll find it all along the River Walk. There are so many different scenes, so many memories to create, that it’s impossible to experience them all in a single day or season.

Had Boudro’s been serving Blackened Prime Rib, fresh Guacamole made tableside and Prickly Pear Margaritas back in 1836, the King of the Wild Frontier would have left Tennessee sooner. Loved by locals and travelers, Boudro’s is a mecca for great food on the River Walk. Frommers says ”Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Dine riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

Feeling Crabby? If you haven’t tied on a bib and cracked into a bucket of crab at Joe’s Crab Shack, you haven’t truly experienced southern seafood.

cream cheese and coated in crispy panko breadcrumbs. Crab is their middle name after all, and with more than 25 crab items on the menu, it’s the place to go to satisfy crab cravings. Crack into one of their signature crab buckets like sweet and flaky Snow crab or extra meaty Jumbo Bairdi crab, seasoned in one of their six flavor options. Here, every day is a celebration, and they make it their business to show you a good time. Lose the forks and the formalities, roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty. At Joe’s Crab Shack, it’s all about being less fancy and more fun. Located directly on the Riverwalk, Joe’s is bringing fresh, bold flavors and a celebration vibe to all who pull up a chair. There’s plenty of seating inside the two-story restaurant and large spaces to accommodate group parties, or you can take in the historic views on one of the patios with a Category 5 Hurricane in hand. They can even arrange for a cocktail or dinner cruise along the river! Head over after work and enjoy Happy Hour specials Monday-Friday from 4-7PM and 9-11PM with $3 drinks and $5 appetizers. And don’t miss out on $2 Twosdays where they serve up $2 drinks and bites all day every Tuesday. Their menu features a wide variety of appetizers to kick start your meal. Keep it classic with some Crispy Calamari or spice things up with the Great Balls of Fire that are scratch made and packed full of crab, jalapenos and

If you want to heat things up, try a Steampot that features the ocean’s best crab, lobster and shrimp boiled and served with fresh corn and potatoes. We highly recommend the Ragin’ Cajun steampot with Dungeness and Queen crab, shrimp and smoked sausage. Joe’s is currently inviting you to celebrate the endless summer with some of their favorites. Until 11/9, you can crack into a plate of tender Pacific Dungeness crab and shrimp seasoned with their signature BBQ dry rub. It’s not your typical BBQ either. They season the crab and shrimp with a unique rub that’s so flavorful, smoky and bold, you can’t help but lick your fingers. Make yourself at home, make some memories and let Joe’s Crab Shack take care of the rest. Located on the Riverwalk at 212 College Street #100. Open every day from 11AM – 12AM. popular restaurants on the Riverwalk for the past 19 years: County Line BBQ. The “Mexican street food” concept stemmed from her roots as a life-long San Antonian, “We’re using as many local companies with quality products as we possibly can, with really fresh vegetables and fruits. I love our food menu, but the bar menu is where I get to have even more fun with a wild menu of cocktails infused with fresh fruits, juices and fruit-infused liquors to reflect what is in season.” One of the restaurant’s most popular drinks is her creation, the Cucumber Mojito, with cucumber infused Tito’s Vodka, raw sugar, mint, lime juice and club soda.

SAGA

Fabulous and FREE! By J.E. Jordan

Oge House in King William

“San Antonio the Saga” Light Show glows in the dark like a kaleidoscope on steroids as it ripples across the façade of San Fernando Cathedral, 115 N. Main Ave. Be prepared to be dazzled at this extravaganza in the heart of downtown at Main Plaza. The explosion of visual art created by French painter and video artist Xavier de Richemont is electronically mapped to follow the cathedral’s contours as it dances over the limestone building accompanied by synchronized music in surround sound. This 7,000-sq.ft.light show projection condenses hundreds of years of history into 24 minutes every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9:00, 9:30, and 10:00 p.m. Arrive early to score a chair from the limited seating on the Plaza, or bring a folding chair unless you don’t mind standing up. The Saga is Richemont’s first outdoor video art installation in the U.S. Other works can be seen in Europe, Africa, Mexico and Canada. Warning: If you have an urgent need to be somewhere else in the next half hour, this is not the place to stop. You won’t want to tear yourself away until the final haunting notes and the last vibrant image fade away. In fact, some folks stick around after the first show to watch again … and again. Trying to catch all the gorgeous, fast-flowing images is like trying to watch all the performers at once at a three-ring circus. There’s no better way to get to know a city than to take a walking tour, absorbing its sights, sounds, aromas and temperament at a leisurely pace. Although San Antonio covers some 467 square miles, its earliest religious, military, and civil settlements are concentrated in the downtown area – and you can tour many of them on foot and for free. For example, the King William Historic District is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the central part of the River Walk. It starts at the Anton Wulff House, built in 1870, at107 King William St. just off the intersection of Cesar Chavez Blvd. and S. St.

Mary’s St. The restored Italian villa style structure is headquarters for the San Antonio Conservation Society. Pick up a walking tour brochure from the box at the gate. The easy-tofollow map leads the trekker on an adventure in gracious living dating from the 1850’s through the 1920’s. The brochure contains photos with histories and descriptions of dozens of Greek Revival, Victorian, and Italianate style homes. Most were built by German industrial pioneers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Development began in 1859, when German immigrant Carl Hilmar Guenther, frustrated by the lack of water to run his flour mill in Fredericksburg, Texas, found a new home for his mills on the banks of the San Antonio River. The home he built, at 205 Guenther St., is attached to the still-operating Pioneer Flour Mills and has been restored as a restaurant, gift shop and house museum. Two other King William houses are open to the public as museums: The Edward Steves Homestead, 509 King William, and Villa Finale, 401 King William St. There is a charge for admission and tours, but there is no charge for wandering the grounds of Villa Finale. It’s open Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00p.m. and Wednesday through Saturday 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. A patio overlooks the River Walk – an inviting spot for a relaxing break. The map leads down to River Walk level at the Johnson St. Bridge for a shady stroll towards downtown, admiring the flora and fauna before ascending to street level and back to the starting point . From there it’s an easy 10-minute walk to another one of San Antonio’s earliest settlements: La Villita, 418 Villita St.,. From King William St., turn left onto S. St. Mary’s, right onto E. Nueva and left on Presa, then turn right into the pedestrian walkway of La Villita – The Little Village. Dating from Colonial Spain, the walled village started as a collection of huts for Spanish soldiers stationed

at Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo). The crude shelters were replaced in the early 19th century with stone and adobe structures. In 1836, La Villita was the site of General Santa Ana’s cannon line during the siege and Battle of the Alamo. Later, immigrants from Germany and France moved into the area adding to the architectural mix. History is traced in the evolution of buildings from adobe huts to Victorian houses. Today, those buildings house a collection of historical exhibits, artisan shops and eating places – a mecca for anyone interested in history, jewelry, handmade clothing and art works. There are four restaurants: two high-end with reservations needed, two casual, where shorts and flip-flops fit right in. E is for eating. E is for entertainment. And E is for easy. If you’re not into walking, catch a ride on one of the colorful, distinctively marked “E” trolleys which travel from River Center Mall, through downtown, to the Tobin Center and back again from 6:00 p.m. to midnight Tuesday through Saturday, running every ten minutes and crossing the River Walk twice each way. Designed with shopping, dining and sightseeing in mind, it’s your ticket to dozens of eating, shopping, historic, cultural and entertainment sites downtown. It’s free all evening, with 17 stops along the way. From River Center Mall, you can take the trolley west on Commerce St. towards Navarro where it angles north, crossing the River Walk once more and on to Auditorium Circle and the Tobin Center. Heading back south down St. Mary’s St., it crosses the River Walk, passes the Aztec Theater before heading east again along Market St. After once more crossing over the River Walk and passing the historic walled village of LaVillita, it continues east past the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center, and after a couple more turns, you’re back at River Center Mall. Maps of the route are online at www.viainfo.net

Bat-Action! Holy guacamole, Batman! Texas is home to more bat-action than any other state-as well as some great guacamole. And every night from May through October millions of these little caped crusaders emerge from their caves at dusk valiantly protecting the law-abiding citizens of the Alamo City from mosquitoes during their nightly insect hunt. This awe-inspiring emergence is quite a sight to see. Right off the bat Bats play two important roles in the environment. The Mexican free-tailed bats in this area are insect-eaters and play a significant part in reducing the agricultural pest population in South and East Texas. These bats save local farmers a lot of money by significantly reducing the need for pesticides. Kapow! The other important role these dark knights play in the environment is pollination. In desert environments, some flowers bloom at night and bats are the main pollinator as they collect nectar from the flowers. And some of the flowers bats pollinate include the flowers on the agave plant, from which we get tequila. So if you like fresh, pesticide-free produce and, more importantly, a good Margarita, bats are indeed our friends. Bam!

Photo: San Antonio River Authority

Same bat time, same bat location The favorite (free) bat viewing location for San Antonio locals is under the Camden Street overpass at IH-35 downtown along the Museum Reach stretch of the River Walk. Locals gather every night at dusk armed with lawn chairs and refreshments for the most bat-tastic sight west of Gotham City.

By Carole Miller

Great guano grotto, Batman! The spot is so well-loved it’s also the home to a great grotto with whimsical waterfalls, stalagmites and stalactites designed by artist Carlos Cortés and “F.I.S.H Out of Water,” a funky, fun display of public art featuring 25 giant sunfish that illuminate after dark and appear to swim across the San Antonio River. The Bourbon Street Seafood Kitchen located at the Wyndham Garden Hotel is a short, two-block walk from the bridge and a great place to enjoy a meal or cocktail prior to watching the bats and even spend the night in one of their posh suites. Quick! To the bat cave! Fire up the Batmobile and venture just outside of town to the Bracken Bat Cave—home to the largest colony of Mexican free-tailed bats in the world (about 20 million). It literally has the highest concentration of mammals in one place in the entire world. There are monthly public viewing nights and tours are available to members (memberships start at $30 and admit up to four people). The Bracken Bat Cave is located in Comal County off IH-35 and is about a 45 minute drive from downtown. Visit www.batcon.org for more information.

San Antonio is a city filled with attractions rich in history, culture, and fun. And everyone knows the Alamo City is provides good times for all ages. But did you know it’s home to numerous museums offering budget-friendly admission to their big treasures for small fees—and sometimes even for free. The Buckhorn Saloon & Museum and Texas Ranger Museum In the heart of downtown San Antonio, The Buckhorn Saloon & Museum and Texas Ranger Museum has attracted both locals and visitors for more than a century. Still a top attraction, The Buckhorn offers free entrance to the Saloon. Here, visitors can examine the collection of wild animals that features more than 520 species. To help keep track of the types of animals displayed, bartenders have booklets that list every animal by location. For an admission, The Buckhorn has several exhibits highlighting the early days of the American sideshow as shaped by the likes of Buffalo Bill and P.T. Barnum. The newest addition to this landmark, the Texas Ranger Museum, displays historically significant artifacts from the Former Texas Rangers Association and also boasts a recreation of San Antonio at the beginning of the 20th century called Ranger Town. Admission for adults, $17.99; children, $12.99. Free to go in the Saloon to view animals. 318 E. Houston Street, San Antonio

The San Antonio Museum of Art The San Antonio Museum of Art is housed in a historic brewery nestled on the banks of the Museum Reach section of downtown’s River Walk. SAMA features the biggest and most complete collection of ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Asian art in the southern United States. Another star attraction here is the assemblage of Latin American art, and holdings of contemporary art continue to grow and include Texas

and regional creations. This museum also hosts hundreds of educational programs every year, including special exhibits, lectures, films, concerts, family art activities, and children’s workshops. Two special exhibits in September enrich the already varied mix. “Miguel Covarrubias: Culture and Caricature” features more than 140 works from the Mexican-born artist, and “28 Chinese” highlights works by 28 contemporary Chinese artists. General admission is free from 4-9PM on Tuesdays and 10AM.-Noon on Sundays. As part of a national program, through Labor Day the museum is offering free admission to active-duty military personnel, including members of the National Guard and Reserve, and their families. Admission for adults, $10; seniors (65 and older), $7; students and active military (ID required), $5; children (12 and under), free. Free general admission 4-9PM. Tuesdays and 10AM-Noon Sundays. 7 minutes from River Walk at 200 West Jones Avenue, San Antonio.

Spanish Governor’s Palace Completed in 1749, the Spanish Governor’s Palace is the last example of an aristocratic 18th-century town house in Texas. A National Historic Landmark, this gem is small but rich. The stucco-covered stone building is filled with ornate period pieces and surrounds a traditional Spanishstyle courtyard. A small admission fee allows visitors to experience the building’s preserved history and the landscaped grounds. Admission for adults, $5; seniors and military, $3; children 7-13, $3; children under 7, free. Located downtown at 105 Military Plaza, San Antonio.

Steves Homestead Get a taste of how south Texas Victorians lived at the Steves Homestead. This gracious, three-story home was built in 1876 for German businessman

Edward Steves. The property has landscaped grounds that include a carriage house, a wash house, and a visitors’ center in converted servants’ quarters. Visitors may choose from self-guided tours, a joint-ticket tour with Villa Finale, a nearby historic home that once sheltered San Antonio preservationist Walter Nold Mathis, and guided tours offering titillating tidbits of history. The latest guided tour, “From Root Cellar to Rafters: A Behind the Scenes Look at the Hidden Homestead,” gives visitors a glimpse of areas that are normally hidden to the public, including the site’s famous natatorium. It begins at 1PM on Wednesdays and lasts about three hours. Self-guided tours for adults, $7.50; seniors (65 and older), active military, and students, $5; children under 12, free. Guided tour: $20. Call 210-2255924 to confirm tour availability. Located downtown at 509 King William, San Antonio.

Briscoe Western Art Museum Named for former Texas governor Dolph Briscoe, Jr. and his wife, Janey, the Briscoe Western Art Museum sits on the River Walk and features art and artifacts of the American West. Admission is free from 4-9PM. Tuesdays. The museum’s first original exhibition, which opens Sept. 12, chronicles the life and times of working cowboys as photographed by Bank Langmore and later, by his son, John. Titled “The Cowboy Returns,” this exhibit runs through Nov. 29 and is free with museum admission. Museum admission for adults, $10; seniors (65 and older), retired military, and students, $8; children 12 and under and active military and their families (up to four members): free. regional art and history and Texas natural history and science. Through exhibits like the H-E-B Body Adventure and the South Texas Heritage Center, as well as interactive exhibits that focus on basic concepts of physics and science, the Witte aims to both entertain and educate. Admission is free 3-8PM Tuesdays. The exhibit, “Discover the Ice Age,” runs through Sept. 7, 2015 and offers a look at the last ice age with fossils, casts, and scientifically accurate lifesized animatronic models of animals that would have roamed Earth during this time. Admission costs $5 plus general admission. Admission for adults, $10; seniors (65 and older), $9; military (ID required), $9; children (4-11), $7; children (3 and under), free. Free general admission 3-8PM Tuesdays. 3801 Broadway, San Antonio.

McNay Art Museum Ohio-born heiress Marion Koogler McNay, upon her death in 1950, donated 700 works of art, her house, the 23 acres surrounding it, and a sizeable endowment to launch the first modern art museum in Texas. The McNay’s collection includes works from European and American master painters, art from the southwest United States, Medieval and Renaissance art, prints and drawings, and intricate art glass. A special exhibit, “Stephen Westfall: The Holy Forest,” was painted entirely by staff of the McNay based on guidelines that Westfall created. Only about five miles from downtown, the McNay’s lush grounds are popular for wedding and bridal portraits. Admission for adults, $10; seniors (65 and older), students with ID (13 and older), and active military, $5; children (12 and under), free. Free general admission 4-9 p.m. Thursdays and Noon-5PM first Sundays of every month. 6000 North New Braunfels Avenue, San Antonio. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

World Heritage Sites Free to Visit

By Lucille Sims Thomas

Here’s a snapshot look at these beautiful historic gems:

m

Mission San Juan Capistrano [Mision San Jose de los Nazonis] Established: 1731, Completion: 1756 Most Recent Renovation: 2012 The chapel was built out of brush and mud. The Mission never prospered like the others because it was not allotted enough land for crops and cattle. A $2.2 M renovation in 2012 stabilized the crumbling foundation. In 1934 foundations were unearthed and in the 60’s structures were reconstructed to portray an authentic floor plan. Visitors can also walk its nature trail to see what the river and vegetation looked like in the 1700s Address: 9101 Graf Street

Even before they were named World Heritage Sites in July 2015 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the five San Antonio Missions, including the most famous, the Alamo, were among the best free attractions in the city. Dating back to 1716 the walled compounds consist of a church and buildings where priests and Native Americans once lived.

Mission San Jose [Mision San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo] Established: 1720, Completion: 1782, Most Recent Renovation: 2011 Known as the queen of the missions, San Jose, is the largest in San Antonio and was built to accommodate the overcrowding from the Mission Alamo. At one point 350 Indians lived there. First built of brush, straw and mud, buildings were replaced with stone structures. It has a mill that was used to grind wheat in the 1700s and is believed to be the oldest wheat grinder in Texas. Address: 6701 San Jose Drive

The missions were established to spread the Christian doctrine to Native Americans while also giving Spain a presence in the area. Except for the Alamo, they are all have active Catholic parishes holding regular services.

Mission Concepción [Mission Nuestra Senora de la Purisma Concepcion de Acuna] Established: 1716, Dedicated: 1755, Most Recent Renovation: 2010 The church was originally built in East Texas and moved to its present location in 1731. It is the best preserved of the Texas missions. Today, it looks essentially as it did in the mid-1700’s. The Battle of Concepcion was fought there in 1835. Interior frescos adorn ceilings and walls. Address: 807 Mission Road

The missions are all three miles apart going south from the Alamo. Their churches are open to visitors during regular park hours, 9AM5PM, unless there is a funeral or wedding. It’s easy to spend two to four hours visiting each of these historic treasures. Guided tours are free. More than 180 species of birds have been spotted at the parks. For more information about the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park, visit nps.gov/ saan/learn/historyculture/ index.htm.

Mission Espada [Mission San Francisco de la Espada] Established: 1690 Completed: 1756 Mission Espada is the southernmost of the missions and much of it was destroyed by fire in 1826. It has the distinction of being the first mission established in Texas. It is home to the most well-preserved portion of the irrigation system known as the acequia that brought water to fields in the area. This main ditch continues to carry water to the mission and its former farm lands. Address: 10040 Espada Road

The Alamo [Mission San Antonio de Valero] Established: 1718 Completed: 1744 The Alamo is the most famous of the five missions and attracts more than 2.5 million visitors each year. It is the site of the March 6, 1836, battle that ended with the death of more than 200 defenders. When the Mexican army retreated from Texas several months later, they tore down many of the Alamo walls and burned some of the buildings. Through the years the Alamo has been a garrison for soldiers, quartermaster depot and a wholesale grocery store. Address: 300 Alamo Plaza www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

More and more people are traveling with their pets these days for business and pleasure. Nine out of ten pets prefer the River Walk. Okay, I made that part up but why wouldn’t a dog want a vacation that includes the River Walk? It is after all, a linear park. And dogs love parks. r Ker

Most restaurants offer outdoor patio seating where pets are welcome. Ask your server for a to-go box and voila, you have a water bowl. A couple visiting from McAllen, Texas chose to visit San Antonio because they knew their dog “Bro” could come with them. Bro enjoyed lunch on the patio of Charlie Wants a Burger too.

Control their dogs at all times so as not to create a nuisance, such as barking or lurching towards someone when the animal is unprovoked.

Lincoln St. George, Center City Development Office Operation Manager, City of San Antonio, says he has seen an increasing number of visitors and their dogs spending time along the river. “There are no ordinances governing dogs on the River Walk. But we do ask that all dogs be on a leash.” And he added, “There is no swimming in the river. Dogs or humans.” San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) confirms there are no specific regulations governing dogs on the River Walk. But SAPD asks that pet owners:

An estimated 44 million households have one or more dogs for a total of 74 million canines in the U.S. According to PetRelocation.com’s Summer Pet Travel survey, 60 percent of pet owners traveled with their pet in 2010. And, Pet Friendly, Inc. estimates over 15 million traveled with dogs last year.

Not leave dogs unattended. Pick up after their animal at all times. Keep dogs out of the vegetation along the River Walk.

One website, www.bringfideo.com, specializes in identifying pet friendly hotels, motels, restaurants in dozens of cities across the U.S. including San Antonio. The site features reviews of dog friendly eateries, accommodations, dog parks, a variety of pet services and almost anything else one might need to know when traveling with Fido. But remember to confirm with the establishments that they do indeed welcome dogs.

g.

Many San Antonio hotels and motels are pet friendly. Some may require a pet deposit but many do not. Finding a pet friendly hotel is a snap if visitors do a little pre-trip research.

La Villita, south of the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, was originally settled nearly 300 years ago as one of the city’s first neighborhoods. In 1939, La Villita Historic Arts Village was established and the neighborhood was adapted into a center for teaching regional arts and crafts and to serve as an artists market. Today, nearly 30 shops and galleries offer distinct handcrafted items by artists from San Antonio and surrounding areas. You’ll find paintings, folk art, textiles, sculptures, copper wares, jewelry, and more. Plus, in the midst of these tree-lined walkways and plazas, enjoy a savory culinary experience at the area restaurants with options ranging from traditional Mexican flavors to steakhouse favorites.
