JUDGE RINDER: INTERVIEW

‘Susanna and I only go away together for the sex!’

TV s tar R obert Rinder jok es about his

wild trips with close pal, GMB host

Susanna Reid, and spills the beans

on life inside the Bake Off tent...

They’ve been pals ever since he first appeared as a guest on Good Morning Britain, six years ago. And Judge Robert Rinder reveals his friendship with presenter Susanna Reid has blossomed so much that they now party hard on holiday together every summer.

Susanna, 49 – who has sons Sam, 18, Finn, 16, and 15-year-old Jack with former partner Dominic Cotton – recently admitted she “fell off the wagon” during a boozy trip to Ibiza with Judge Rinder last September, after going teetotal on a strict no-alcohol diet plan. And Robert, 41, who separated from his husband Seth Cumming two years ago, tells Closer, “I love to go away with Susanna once a year. We have more plans to go away, but I won’t say where. The two of us try to keep it to ourselves – Susanna and I only go on holiday for the sex!”

JEALOUS

Susanna’s GMB co-host Piers Morgan

previously lamented losing his drinking

buddy after she ditched the booze at the

end of 2018, and Robert cheekily adds,

“Does Piers get jealous? I like to keep that

to myself. It’s just me and Susanna, and we

have sex morning, noon and night. I am

exhausted by the time I come home, to be

honest, and I need another holiday.”

Famed for his sharp tongue, the

PHOTOS: INSTAGRAM, GETTY professional barrister began filming the reality court show Judge Rinder in 2014, presiding over small claims in his televised courtroom. He is said to have had ambitions to become an actor, and is close pals with Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch after the pair met while studying together at Manchester University. The actor officiated With holiday buddy Susanna

at Robert’s 2013 wedding to ex-husband Seth. Robert was best man when Benedict married director Sophie Hunter two years later.

And he has other celebrity pals aplenty. In 2016, Robert starred on Strictly Come Dancing, making it through to the quarter finals with his pro dance partner Oksana Platero, and he’ll be back on our screens this spring in Celebrity Bake Off. He reveals he found a kindred spirit in presenter Carol Vorderman, and is full of praise for host Sandi Toksvig and Paul Hollywood, one of the judges.

NAKED “Carol is amazing and we became great friends,” he says. “She is exceptional at baking. That’s all I’ll say. She taught me a lot.

“I had a little dance with Sandi. It was a lovely moment. It’s sad she’s leaving [Sandi recently revealed she is exiting the show after three years]. I would love to be a judge on the show, but the problem is you need to have some baking skills.

“Paul Hollywood is a baking nerd – he loves it. That’s why people really like him, as he is genuinely into it. He ate my food, too!”

Later this month, the star is set to trek 100 miles across a frozen lake in Mongolia in aid of Sport Relief, joining DJ Nick Grimshaw and reality star Chris Hughes for the sub-zero four-day challenge, which will be shown in a documentary on BBC1 in March. He says, “I’m doing a hundred-mile triathlon with Nick and I’m getting naked in an ice bath with Chris from Love Island ... There are worse jobs, although apparently things shrink in the ice!” By Olivia Buxton

osing in hot pants and a cutout mini-dress for a magazine interview published as she turned 51 last week, Jennifer Aniston drew thousands of compliments for her awe-inspiring body and youthful looks in amazing shots that were all over the internet. After proudly reposting the snaps on her Instagram, Jen’s best mate and Friends co-star Courteney Cox commented, “Are you kidding??”, followed by a row of fire emojis, while a fan’s comment saying, “This would have been my 20 year old goals, to be honest,” racked up almost 100k likes.

Just a few months earlier, Jen – who rose to fame in Friends in 1994, aged 25, and remains one of Hollywood’s biggest stars – said, “Mostly, my body [at 50] feels better than ever. [As you get older], not only do you feel better in your body physically, but you’re mentally better.” P

HEALTHY HABITS With an estimated £114million fortune, the 5ft3 actress can afford the best experts to keep her in shape, but insists it comes down to dedication. She does cardio, weight-lifting or yoga every day to maintain her size 6-8 figure.

Even holidays don’t warrant a day off, as she brings a set of eight-pound weights with her, once saying, “It’s always good to do arm exercises when you’re watching television or talking on the phone in the hotel. Being thin is hard work, but exercise is good for your mind and soul.” Jen sticks to a gluten-free, low carb and high protein diet to maintain her enviable body. Although she had a nose job in her early 20s, she has rejected Botox and filler, saying, “I am never injecting s*** into my face.” Instead, she puts her smooth complexion down to her Greek heritage and noninvasive beauty treatments. “It’s hydration, and there are also so many things that women can do today with technology,” she says. “LED light therapy, good lasers that tighten the muscles, and massages for your face – and don’t forget great creams.”

CHILD POVERTY “The school’s food bank has been a life-saver for us. If I’m struggling to budget or my anxiety stops me cooking basic meals that week, I can get fresh fruit and vegetables, and the kids really love the school’s meatballs in tomato sauce.”

The community scheme was launched after Reach2’s CEO, Sir Steve Lancashire, visited

Alison Garnham of Child Poverty Action Group one of the tr ust’s 60 primary schools . While joining the pupils for breakfast, a star ving schoolboy told him he hadn ’t eaten the previous evening because his mum couldn’t afford to bu y food. While these are thought to be some of the first food banks run by schools specifically for their pupils and families, food banks are on the rise in the UK. Nationwide, there are now more than 2,000, and the number of supplies distributed has risen by over 73 per cent in the past five years.

The Department of Education already provides free schools meals to 1.3 million of the country’s most disadvantaged children. They’ve also expanded their school breakfast clubs, which give pupils at 2,450 schools a free breakfast.

The chief executive of Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG), Alison Garnham, says the government needs to do more to support families living below the breadline.

She says, “After years of cuts to family support, such as child benefit and universal credit, and with wages stalling and living costs rising, child pover ty is increasing, especially in working families. Too many households just don’t have enough money to pay for the essentials.

“Schools should not have to step in to provide food, but they do because they know that some of their parents – many of them in work – are on such low incomes now that they just can’t get by, however hard they budget and whatever sacrifices they make.

“It’s shocking that in this day and age parents find themselves in a position where they have no option but to ask their school for help to feed their children.”

STRUGGLE Jolie began to struggle for money after she split from her partner in 2018. She says, “The kids and I lived in a refuge for a while, where our meals were provided for us. But when I set myself up on my own, I quickly realised my

REAL LIFE

funds wouldn’t stretch very far. “My weekly benefits can be as little as £117, so the meals I cooked were tiny. I’d feed the kids little bowls of pasta with sauce and some chopped up ham – but they’d still say they were hungry when they finished. I felt like a failure. “I ended up going to my local church, which would donate a few bits. But it was hard to go to, and it wasn’t open very often.”

Jolie insists the school’s food bank has been a lifechanger. She says, “I do the school run every day, so it’s The food bank relies on dona tions and surplus from the school kitchen

so con venient, and the fridge is open three da ys a w eek. “It’s also a chance to chat to some of the teachers about what I’m going through, so it’s provided a great suppor t network for me , too .” The food bank at U nity Primar y A cademy, which has 380 pupils , has had 70 visits so far from parents, feeding around 130 people . Co-head teacher, Lucy Williams , 35 , sa ys she regularly teaches hungr y children. She say s, “I’ve taught for 13 y ears, and it’s the first time in m y career that I’ve seen a lack of food become an issue for so many children.

“The brutal programme of austerity and cuts to funding by the government has had a huge impact and left some of our families with a very poor safety network, which is when the school is forced to step in. Our focus as a school should be on education, but we can’t let children go hungry. “Pupils can’t learn on an empty stomach. They’re distracted and they get anxious, too – imagine the stress of not knowing when you’ll next eat. “For some children, the school meal is the only hot meal they have all day.”

Like many schools, Unity Primary Academy already ran a breakfast club, which provided a free breakfast to some of its pupils. They also offer free vouchers to their tuck shop.

GENEROSITY Lucy says, “We already had some initiatives in place to help families, but the community fridge has made a real difference. Now, whenever a parent comes into school – for whatever reason – we’ll ask them if they need to use the fridge. We don’t judge, we just want to help.”

The food bank runs thanks to surplus food from the school kitchen and donations from the local community. Lucy says, “The generosity has been amazing.

“People understand that those in financial difficulties are not selfish or lazy. Sometimes the financial help you get doesn’t cover your needs.

“These children only get one shot at education, and we have to make every moment count.” By Alexandra Meyer
