Welcome

On the fun side of things...

It seems like the year flew by. The kids finished and restarted another successful 4-H year. They attended a few junior shows throughout the year, of course we tagged along. We also did a bit of camping and had some practice fishing. With friends, we attended some pretty exciting combine crashes and watched some live ball. This past summer we were able to fit in a little Alberta road tripping and sightseeing.

This past July our family was largely involved in helping plan and organize the ACA Supper, Social and Pen Display held in Stettler on Canada Day in conjunction with the World Charolais Congress Tour. We were able to have a chance to visit and network with our fellow cattleman - which is always fun. It turned out to be a success.

Shortly after that, we all headed out to Swift Current for the annual CCYA Show and Conference and did NOT happen to escape the heat there. Despite the weather, we all had a great time. This was our kids’ third CCYA and it never disappoints. We always look forward to getting together with our friends - maybe even more than the kids do.

The fall didn’t slow down either. We combined in high gear this year! Wrapped that up faster than we wanted to. We then shifted focus on our FarmFair journey. More on that in the back of the catalogue.

Hayley picked up the camera and all of these fantastic background pictures in the catalogue have been taken by her. Great job Hayley!

Owen jumps into whatever we will let him drive. He definitely knows more about the mechanics of the equipment around here than his mother does but at this point, it is still a toss up of who is the better operator!

So, as it seems - farming, fishing, family and friends seem to highlight our year.

And just a little tip to end. If you find you’ve lost your phone in the bedding pack, don’t give up, rent a metal detector!

On the business side of things...

We would like to welcome our fellow cattleman and friends to our 8th annual bull sale.

Often in this business our customers become fast friends. Even though all of our situations are different, in general, there is a certain commonality with having cattle in which we appreciate.

At Legacy Charolais, we are always trying to do better. We are constantly trying to improve genetics, farm as efficiently as possible all while trying to reduce the workload. We have high expectations from our cow herd - they have to be functional and productive with an emphasis on consistency. If we select for these traits, they transfer forward into the herds that Legacy bulls are used in.

Please know this when you are purchasing a Legacy bull - we are in this business because we love the challenge of raising quality cattle and we appreciate the people we meet along the way. Quality and honesty are the foundation we believe will make our herd succeed.

We understand the importance of your investment. We are happy to assist you in any way we can. If you would like to view our bulls or herd in person, we are happy to show you sale day or whenever it works for you ahead of time. At Legacy, it is always an open-door policy.

Cheers,

Troy, Dianna & Family

King Maker was purchased with our good friends from Poplar Bluff Stock Farm. We are very excited to be able to present this set of calves sired by him. King Maker naturally bred our first calf heifers and then went on to work at the Taylors. He maintained his great disposition at both places and continued to grow as a yearling should.

King Maker may be one of the best footed and conformationally correct bulls we have walked here at Legacy. He carries and passes on his exceptionally balanced bone size and style. His offspring are well muscled and free moving just like him.

We are very glad to have King Maker, a new leading herd sire, in our portfolio.

Game Day keeps meeting and exceeding our expectations. He continuously is siring progeny that mimic his desirable traits –performance, muscle pattering, perfect foot structure, length of spine, docility, haircoat and the homozygous polled gene. We are very impressed with the daughter’s capability of producing top quality offspring themselves.

Game Day was purchased by Poplar Bluff Stock Farm in our 2020 Bull Sale and we couldn’t be happier with the friendship this has created. Game Day has an outstanding genetic combination that will serve the purebred and commercial cattle industry well.

SEMEN QUALIFIED TO BE EXPORTABLE TO THE UNITED STATES.

WJS GRAND MASTER 999J

Grandmaster is one of our walking bulls purchased from Johnson Ranching in 2023. We purchased him because we thought highly of his complete package. He is a welcomed addition to our bull battery adding some sons that will be great options for cow bulls in our pen.

LT COUNTDOWN 9712

Countdown is admired for his calving ease and growth. Lot 23 is quite admirable himself! We only have one bull sired by Countdown because he was in a heifer we purchased. There are so many reasons to like this bull. We think Countdown will be something to get excited about!

LOT 23

Johnny Waker was added to our bull battery to carry on the performance we desire in our bull pen with a splash of style. We walked this bull on our cows and he was excellent at covering ground. The Johnny Walker son’s we sold last year were well received and we feel that this years set is even more impressive. Our intentions worked out and this sire group is another great option for cow bulls in our bull pen.

Laredo was a bull we initially purchased for our heifer pen. He calved out on our heifers amazing. We used him solely on our heifer pen and then to finish out the breeding season on some cows. He is a great breeding bull with a small head, smooth shoulder and a nice quarter. As he matures, he is maintaining an attractive look and great disposition. We were excited about the sons we sold last year and feel that they are well worth the look again this year.

OUR FEEDING PROGRAM

Initially the calves are started on a palatable calf starter to promote solid feed intake while on pasture. Calves are then transitioned to Country Junction Feeds 16% Right Way Classic ration, a blend of digestible fibres to provide energy for growth while maintaining low dietary starch levels. In addition, it contains chelated minerals, trace minerals and Vitamin E at a higher level to promote better skeletal growth, scrotal development and immune response. Once off pasture, calves are fed a silage based total mixed ration supplemented with the same pellet. This feeding program balances skeletal development with muscle development making the bulls ready to go cover some ground.

BIRTH WEIGHT & CALVING EASE

University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions:

1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%.

2. The female has 60-70% influence on BW of her calf.

3. The bull has 30-40% influence on BW of his progeny.

4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on CE.

5. Length of gestation greatly affects BW. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation.

6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation.

7. Size and maturity of the cow influence CE.

Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer-bodied calf will weight more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb. at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb. cow should give birth to a 96 lb. calf with ease. Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.

We appreciate that attending cattle shows give us all a chance to promote our breed, our product and network among friends. We stress the importance to our kids of being proud of the animals that they walk in the ring with, whether the judge thought the same way or differently. But always learning from their experiences. Thanks to everyone who helped us along the way!

THANK YOU
