A MESSAGE FROM PAUL
DAVIDSON
President'sMessage
Dear Fellow Member,
This will be my final Bagpiper message, in service, as President of BraeBurn Country Club. I consider myself very fortunate to have served as your President. We have so many reasons to be proud during these exciting and transformational times at the Club. We had so many accomplishments this year. However, the completion of the golf course, on time and within budget, was the highlight for me. Watching the construction project, combined with marketing strategies, created Membership growth achieving a prestigious status in our Stockholder category with a “Wait list to belong”.
I was surrounded by an incredible Board of Directors. I would like to personally thank Robby Martin and Scott Deiss for their work with me on our Executive Committee I will miss our weekly calls These gentlemen certainly made my term much more fluid and smoother I am grateful to have been in the trenches with these two committed gentlemen. We all made each other better this last year.
James Sivco will be your Club President next year. I have gotten to know James very well over the last two years. He loves BraeBurn as much as I do. I am very confident in his abilities. Like me, he will need a strong Board surrounding him. Continuing their service will be Jody Batdorf, Robin Bobbitt, Chris Calderwood, Jim Kinahan and Cody Womack. This has to be one of the most dynamic Boards we have ever had. We faced many challenges and opportunities this year. This group of dedicated Board Members always had the best interest, from a “360” perspective, in every decision made relative to the Club and our Membership I am thankful for their service You will have a chance to vote for 3 new Members to our Board this month. Please take this vote very seriously. The next few years for our Club could be the most important in Club history.
Past Presidents that are reading this know what I am saying when I talk about Dan Olson and his Team. We understand the time and passion that they put into the Club. Sure it "is their job" as I have heard a time or two. But it is their going way beyond the call of duty that really makes our Club what we have. I will be forever grateful for working with our Staff. I will probably miss my time with Dan the most. We are fortunate to have him and his Team.
They say that Father Time is undefeated, and he is I have served the last 5 consecutive years on the Board and my time has ended I wonder how many meetings and calls I have participated in over the past 5 years…. I suppose I could try to count them by looking back at my calendars. I can honestly say I loved every minute of them. I will miss my time away from leadership at the Club. I know we are in good hands going forward and I am so proud of our team effort and accomplishments this past year.
Thank you for the privilege of serving.
Paul Davidson BraeBurn Club President

BOARD CORNER 2
ANNUAL STOCKHOLDER’S MEETING BALLOT BOX CLOSES AT 7 P.M.
A MESSAGE FROM JODY BATDORF
GreensUpdate
Dear Fellow Member,
Everything seems to be falling into place after the incredible weather disruptions of last summer. As a payback we have had some great weather this winter for growing and better said, not harming the new course.
I hope you are aware the full eighteen holes has been cleared for opening in late April. We will have a Grand Opening party on April 22 in the BallRoom where Tripp Davis and Don Mahaffey of GreenScape Methods will be on hand with a chance to thank all the volunteers, Construction Committee Members and Board Members involved in getting this project completed under budget and almost on time. Golf will start on Saturday April 23 and Sunday the 24th. Aaron is confident the course will be in top condition on these dates.
There are estimates that if we would have waited on this project throughout the growing season and into the first of this year that the cost would have been two million dollars more than we paid. Our timing was good for several reasons, mainly that contractors and crews were hungry for business when we started. We got top dollar for our investment since the best of crews was used during this period as well.
I must give a special shout out to past president David Hanse There are numerous people who spent countless hours on this project, but David spearheaded it from the beginning. He organized the committees, set the timelines, interviewed the vendors, and helped push through to the finish line this massive undertaking. I am sure it was exhausting but he persistently kept us heading in the right direction. Make sure to thank him for his efforts when you see him. We also must make sure to thank Dan Olson Dan took the brunt of the interaction with contractors and vendors and the Board congratulates him on his efforts for which we will be eternally grateful.
Once the full course opens, we will review current cart usage policies. Please take care in replacing divots and fixing ball marks We are hopeful to have carts on the course sooner rather than later, hopefully early summer.
As our Board term and committee assignments ends this April, Jim Kinahan and I would like to thank our outstanding committee for their attendance, input, and efforts. And congratulate the PresidentElect, James Sivco

Improve Club Communications
In order to improve our Club communication for the entire family, please review all email addresses in the Club website (scan the code) to ensure we have correct contact information for all Members.
If we have an incorrect email address listed for you on the website, please email Tracy Gray, at tgray@braeburncc.com with your corrections or changes.
In order to provide better access control and security, every Member vehicle must have a Club issued parking sticker. This prevents delays at the front entrance and allows the gate guard to more easily recognize Members and their vehicles. There have been several comments regarding Members not wanting a windshield decal. Should you fall under that group, we have a solution to offer you as well but you will still need to present the alternative upon entry. If you do not have a current parking sticker contact Tracy Gray at tgray@braeburncc.com with year, make and model and she will facilitate securing your sticker.

Our selection this month is THE HOUSE ON VESPER SANDS by
Paraic O'Donnell
London, 1893: high up in a house on a dark, snowy night, a lone seamstress stands by a window. So begins the swirling Victorian-inspired mystery, the story of a city cloaked in shadow, but burning with questions: why does the seamstress jump from the window? Why is a cryptic message stitched into her skin? And how is she connected to a rash of missing girls, all of whom seem to have disappeared under similar circumstances? On the case is Inspector Cutter, a detective as sharp and committed to his work as he is wryly hilarious As Inspector Cutter peels back the mystery layer by layer, he leads them all, at last, to the secrets that lie hidden at the house on Vesper Sands.
Our Presenter is Amy Kapiloff.
Join us in person or via Zoom and stay for lunch if you'd like. Please RSVP to Stacy Robinson by April13th.

A MESSAGE FROM The Golf Course Superintendent TerryGill
My Appreciation for BraeBurn
23 years ago, I had the privilege and honor of becoming the Golf Course Superintendent at BraeBurn Country Club. Sometimes you create your own destiny, and sometimes you just get lucky. Aug. 23rd 1999 was my lucky day. Throughout these years, I have had the honor of working with 23 different Club Presidents, 20 or more Greens Chairmen and hundreds of Members on different committees. Never have I had anything but their full support on any projects we were trying to accomplish for the good of the course and Club. Whether new bridges, cart paths, new bunkers, new landscape projects or completely rebuilding the entire golf course, the Members have always supported the cause. I believe BraeBurn has the greatest Membership and greatest Management Staff in Houston. Once a person becomes a Member or an employee at BraeBurn, most never leave till their time is up. That says so much about the character of the Club and its Members.
I have had the privilege to work with some of the greatest Staff at any Country Club. The amount of floods, hurricanes, and power outages at critical times we have endured as a team meant everyone had to cowboy up for the good of the Club. Each time, they did it with no complaints. It has been an amazing feat working with one Golf Professional Ken McDonald 32 years, one General Manager Dan Olson 25+ years, Accountant Deborah Lockhart 27+ years, Clubhouse Manager Beto Lopez and Administrative Assistant Tracy Gray, 23 years, and always having their full support. This doesn’t happen anywhere else. I have had the same Assistant Jesus Polio, same Mechanic Israel Garces, and more than 10 staff Members since the day I arrived. Now you see why I say I’m a lucky man. Seems when anyone choosing to leave BraeBurn they are replaced with a person equal or better I would be remiss not to mention the Department Head Team, Membership Director Lisa Carruth, Catering Director Valerie Schindler, Food and Beverage Director Alison Martin, Accounting Assistants Kathy Kall and Yana Grand, the entire golf staff, Mark, Clint, Jeremy, Paul, Leslie and Stephen, Chef Pedro and his entire staff, BJ and his crew, and the newest addition to the team, Golf Course Superintendent Aaron Engelhard This team has become more than just work colleagues, they are family. What an excellent job they all do for the Club’s Membership.
In closing, I would just like to say Thank You to everyone, Members and Staff, for 23 great years. The respect and kindness I have received will never be forgotten. To the Members, if you have not met my replacement Aaron Engelhard you need to Aaron has a wonderful family and will be a great Superintendent for BraeBurn Country Club. I’m sure he will receive the same respect as I always have, because that is the BraeBurn way.
Thanks Again from One Lucky Man, TerryGill

BRAEBIRDS by JIM FRANK |
Brown-headed Cowbird
I spent a few minutes at probably the last tree to leaf on the BraeBurn property in mid-April because it afforded a chance to take a clear photo of whatever landed While I waited, a Cardinal, Monk Parakeet, White-winged Dove, Blue Jay, and a swallow flew by or landed. And then a dark bird arrived that I thought at first was a blackbird. I then thought it was a Bronzed Cowbird but that bird has a thick neck of feathers and a red eye. It turns out that this brown-headed dark bird with a finch-like bill is a Brown-headed Cowbird
Brown-headed Cowbirds are in a family of birds that includes the Meadowlarks, Blackbirds, Grackles, and Orioles and like the other Cowbird that has visited BraeBurn, the Bronzed Cowbird, the Brown-headed Cowbird is a brood parasite that lays its eggs in the nest of another species and then abandons them to be raised by their new foster parents.
The Brown-headed Cowbird ranges from southern Mexico, throughout the entire lower 48 states, and into southern Canada and it’s a year-round resident in Texas It’s a very commonly-seen bird in the Houston area during April but I hadn’t noticed it before – probably because I wasn’t expecting it. But now that I’ve seen it, I bet I’ll see it on the BraeBird list more frequently (That said, I’ve seen it only twice at BraeBurn in my six plus years )
Jim Frank joined BraeBurn in early 2016. He is a Member of the Greens Committee.
