A New Face on Twenties

BY FUNANYA IKECHUKWU

Andrew Jackson, the seventh US president, has been the face of the twenty-dollar bill since 1928, according to The Washington Post, Jackson, the seventh president of the US, has in recent times has become to be known as a controversial figure. Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist, is set to replace Jackson as the new face of the twenty-dollar bill, due to her many accomplishments and deeds that she has done, for the United States.

Jackson is considered to be a controversial president in recent years. Jackson first became a lawyer, and later on, became wealthy enough to own enslaved people. He, later on, became president of the United States. Jackson strongly supported the institution of slavery and is responsible for signing the Indian Removal Act, leading to the Trail of Tears, according to whitehouse. gov.

Under the Obama administration, there was a push to change the $20 bill. One major candidate was the freedom-fighter, Tubman. She was born Araminta Ross in Dorchester County, Maryland, and later on changed her name to Harriet Tubman, when she married John Tubman, a free black man. Tubman was also known as “Moses,” due to the work that she did. Tubman helped dozens of enslaved people in the South escape to the North via the Underground Railroad, according to womenshistory.org. Due to these heroic acts, she is slated to be the new face of the bill.

Chikwendu Okwandu (9) said, “ I think this choice will have a big effect on the African American community. I think many children, especially young women, will be inspired by Harriet Tubman’s placement on the $20 bill. It will show the world that women can achieve great accomplishments and make a difference in the world if they work and persist one small step at a time.”

Many proponents of the change state that having Tubman on the bill is essential for giving positive representation for AfricanAmericans. This could represent a positive shift

Jordyn Wright (11) said, “Definitely a big effect because like always, there are people who don’t support certain things that others strongly believe in. And there will definitely be many people complaining that Jackson should not be removed, but sometimes change is good, and if this change is approved I would definitely be excited to hold a 20 dollar bill in my hand.”

Keoni Pang (11) said, “I believe it will have a minor effect but shows a shift towards the right direction.”

This change is expected to be seen on bills around 2025-2026, with the Biden administration, ramping up production of this new change. This bill is set to provide more representation of the US’s diverse history. Putting Tubman on the twentydollar bill is not going to solve all the problems with race and representation that the US faces, but it is a step in the right direction.
