GRADE 5B GARDEN DESIGNS – CONGRATULATIONS ON WONDERFUL WORK!

Last week I was invited to grade 5B’s presentation of their project work about garden ideas and designs. It was fantastic to meet with each group and hear their ideas and wonderful expertise about the environment. The students and Miss Bolton are to be congratulated on their outstanding work which will be showcased further in the newsletter. Well done to everyone!

EARLY LEAVERS

Our early leavers procedure is working very well with parents required to come into the office and sign their child out and then collect them from the classroom. As you would understand, this is usually during teaching time and the teachers are always busy working with their grades when parents come to collect early leavers. We appreciate parents understanding that this isn’t a time to catch up on how their child is going as the teachers will be teaching the class. If you need to touch base with the teacher about anything, please email via Compass to organise an alternative time to meet.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY

On Friday 25th October, we will be celebrating World Teachers’ Day. Teachers and support staff at Berwick Lodge strive to make a difference each and every day. So, if there is a teacher or staff member that you feel has made a difference for you or your child, please send them a brief message of thanks. A simple email or thank you at the end of class will make their day. Students might like to thank their teachers too, with a kind word, message, or drawing.

SAFE AROUND SCHOOLS: Active Travel – How to fit a helmet safely.

As a community, we always love seeing children being active by riding, scooting, or skating in our neighbourhood. It is important your child always wears a helmet while on a bike, scooter, or skateboard to ensure they are not seriously injured. We are noticing some of our students who ride, skate or scoot to school, without their helmets. Could parents please have a conversation about safety. Please refer to the flyer from the City of Casey.

On Friday the 18th of October 5B had Mrs McCrum come to our classroom and we showed her our veggie gardens that we had been designing since the start of term 3. We have been learning about different design processes and how to end up with the best version of a design. We followed these steps:

1 - We had thought very hard about what should go in the garden so we looked at our own BLPS community garden and got ideas from there.

2 - We had to decide where our garden would go and consider who would use it. This was the centre of all of our decision making.

3 - We designed our own gardens

4 - We formed small groups and used ideas from each person to combine and come up with a garden with everyone’s ideas

5 - We used the SCAMPER tool (substitute, combine, adapt, modify, put to another use, eliminate and reverse) to reflect and improve our designs

6 - We researched different plants that would survive in our gardens and other materials we could use and made a kid friendly document of all of these.

7 - We got Mrs McCrum to come and we presented our gardens to her because she is an expert in plants and gardening and got some feedback from her on how to improve our garden designs.

Our grade had a lot of fun researching plants and designing a garden. We would also like to thank Mrs McCrum for visiting our classroom and looking at the designs.

Berwick Lodge Book Fair 2024

Our book fair will be held on Monday the 28th of October and Tuesday the 29th of October.

This will be held in the grade 5/6 building and runs from 3:30pm to 4:30pm each day.

Well done to Sanvi who finished 4th in the 11 girls Long Jump and Kuol who finished 4th in his heat in the 12/13 boys 80m hurdles. Such an amazing effort. We are so proud of you both. Well done!!!

NOTE TO PREP-GRADE 2 FAMILIES

On Friday 8th November we will be holding our annual Prep-Grade 2 House Athletics Day. This event will run until lunchtime at school where students will have the opportunity to participate in 5 athletics events (hurdles, 70m sprint, discus, long jump and butterfly grip relay) and 1 novelty event. Students will run in their grade level on the day, not their age groups.

Each student will earn points for their house in each event. 1st-4th ribbons will be awarded to students that place in the final of their running event as well as the longest throw/jump in the field events. The house that earns the most points for the day will be announced at an end of day school assembly.

Students are encouraged to wear their house colours (optional) to support their house team as well as apply sunscreen for the day. Hats will need to be worn and plenty of water to drink to keep hydrated. A best dressed certificate will be awarded for best dressed students in their age group.

Parents and families are more than welcome to come along to support the children on the day and must remain outside the event areas to spectate.

Thank you.

Fun Run Announcement

We’re excited to announce that the annual BLPS Fun Run will take place on Monday, 18th November! This year promises some fantastic surprises, including participation from our wonderful staff members.

The Fun Run is an essential event for raising funds for our school, and we’re making it easier than ever with an online fundraising platform. Families will be able to register and share their child’s fundraising page with friends and family, no matter where in the world they are!

We’re also looking for parent volunteers to help make this event a success. If you’re interested, please contact us at pfa@berwicklodgeps.vic.edu.au. Volunteers must have completed the school induction and hold a current Working with Children Check, both of which we can guide you through easily.

Stay tuned for more details on registration and fundraising opportunities, including exciting prize draws for participants!
