This year has been one to remember and while it’s hard to choose just one memory, we definitely did have some highlights “My first day of Prep” said Aleyna, “I made so many new friends” added Hugo. “Meeting my buddy Jake” said Jack and Ava loved buddy time with Lizzy, Will thought “having two buddies was cool”. “Zance on a Monday” agreed Tomoe, Ruby and Sienna. “Are you forgetting when the Easter Bunny came?” said Asher with a big smile. Liam liked getting into the Police car and Jamie liked the loud siren! Andrea and Mitchell thought dressing up as a 100 year old and celebrating our 100 days of Prep was the best! “Splashing in the pool at swimming” giggled Mia and Katinka. “Zooming around on my bike at Casey Safety Village” smirked Max. “CHESTERFIELD FARM!” shouted Zack and Kai. Hayden, Leah and Summer topped it off when they said……“everything about Prep.” Miss Quelch agreed, she has loved every moment, every laugh and every child in our grade.
LODGERS: Prep T 2018 This year in Prep T has been so much fun! We’ve worked hard and played hard, we’re always on the run. We started out new, uncertain, some scared. But we’ve learnt to make friends, there’s so much we have shared. Ava has a good heart and is kind to her friends. Ashley always does the right things, right to the end. Abigail like to tell jokes and has a great laugh. Cade runs fast like cheetahs and is tall like giraffes. Kuzey likes to tell stories and has a great smile. Tobias always does beautiful work with style. Kallan knows big, long words and will tell us long yarns. Elle has the sweetest smile and cleans rooms, yards & barns. Helena likes to be tested and she works hard. Cooper jumps around and loves playing in the yard. Chalinya must be careful not to hurt herself, She’s good at writing and putting books on the shelf. Ryan says the sweetest things and loves to have fun. Jayden works hard on her work and loves to say, done! Riley is so funny and always tries his best! Isa’s a spelling champ and loves getting best dressed! Josh listens carefully and loves all his maths sums. Luka calculates and marches to his own drum. Isabella’s responsible, likes to be in charge. Katerina has a smile, beautiful and large. Min Song has a great personality and more. We will remember Rayyan, a Prep T to the core. Our year has been filled with English and maths. Now we can read, write and count, we’re on the right paths. We’ve had Easter parades, buddies and games. We’ve had so many visits, that it’s hard to name. PMP, Brain Gym and dancing each week, We all love our specialists and also we shriek… When it’s Show and Tell day, we love to speak! We learnt ‘All about Me’ and we learnt how to seek… Help when we need it, in ‘I’m Okay’ – yay! We stay safe from all dangers and learn not to stray. It’s important we learn, right from all wrong. In Term 3, we learnt how to keep our planet strong. We like being Planeteers to help the earth. To always keep it clean and remember it’s worth. In Term 4, we learnt about farm animals, of all sorts.
Chesterfield Farm was fun, with animals tall and short. The year has flown by, we’ve learnt so much more. We’re smarter, wiser and taller, much older than four. There’s much to remember as we look back, Will it be cookies, friends, stars or all the great chats? Will you cherish all the memories made? You’ve got a great future Prep T, don’t be afraid! For me dear Prep T, I will always hold dear, To my memories of you and your faces so clear!

INQUIRY: WORLD EXPO Around the world in 80 minutes… A highlight for the senior school students in 2018 was their World Expo day on Wednesday, 9 May 2018. Our Lodgers Magazine reporters were on the scene to talk to the students about their inquiry learning projects…
The expo ran from 2.00pm to 3.20pm and was held in the Grade 5 and 6 classrooms. For 80 minutes, the rooms were packed with interested students, parents and teachers wanting to visit the expo from across the school.
Lowan from 6P has been working on a project about America. “I chose America as a country to learn about because my Dad is American. I have learnt about the currency, different sports and the different foods they eat.”
Alex from Grade 6C spent time learning about Denmark. “I learnt that in Denmark they speak a language called Danish. In Denmark, the people enjoy playing soccer and handball.”
The students spent weeks learning about many different countries of the world. Some students produced posters while other students produced digital media presentations (such as Powerpoint and Scratch projects) and some even created their own interactive games! Holly R from 6M has been working on a project about Russia. “I learnt that a typical Russian drink is ‘baked milk’.”
Abbey from Grade 5W said, “In Spain, basketball is a popular sport.” The expo provides the students with an opportunity to display and present their work to the school community. Taran from Grade 5C said, “We are doing the expo so we can learn about different counties in our world. I am learning about Austria. They play icehockey and the currency is Euros.”
As an inquiry learning unit, the World Expo gave our LODGERS an open-ended opportunity to explore and learn. Grade 5 and 6 classroom blogs on the school website.
Tevin from Grade 6M said, “I didn’t know that Lego was created in Denmark until I started learning about their country.” Alisha from Grade 6P said, “I am learning about Mexico. I learnt that they eat tacos (which actually means 'small snack'), nachos and burritos.” Sophia from Grade 5K said, “I am learning about Belgium. Did you know that they actually created French Fries! I didn’t! In Belgium they speak French, German and Dutch.” Lauchie from Grade 5W said, “I am learning about Austria! Did you know they created the croissant?” Well done to everyone involved! Ashwin has participated in dozens of chess competitions around Victoria and Australia and has won numerous medals and trophies to prove it. Ashwin started playing Chess in 2016 and hasn’t looked back since…
CHESS PAINS
Chess is a game of strategy and logic. It has been played and enjoyed by millions of people around the world for centuries, but there are few people in the 21st Century that play the ancient game as well as Berwick Lodge’s very own vice school captain Ashwin.
“After lots of tournaments, I realised the game was helping me in my daily life. I could solve problems faster - and in more creative ways than I could before.” It was while playing a game at Hampton Park Primary School in 2016 that Ashwin learnt something about himself that he had never realised before…
According to the website https:// au.tornelo.com/, Ashwin is listed as one of the top 30 best chess players in Australia.
“I was losing to people who had just started playing the game, and I was playing terribly. It was painful. I got frustrated and angry with myself. After the tournament finished, I said I was going to quit chess forever! My mum became troubled since she knew I had a great future in the game and she tried to persuade me to keep playing. Luckily, she did! Mum helped me realise that it's not about winning or loosing the game, it’s about winning or learning the game.”
“I started to play chess after watching my brother and mum play. I become interested in it and I picked it up fast. My mum saw talent in me and encouraged me to play more and more. After attending chess coaching sessions, I was ready to play in tournaments.”
Ashwin’s brother attended the tournaments with him and observed his game strategy. As Ashwin made mistakes on the board, his brother was able to assist him and coach him after the game.
tournaments at the Australian Junior Chess Championships, the Victorian youth championships, the upcoming state championships and he is playing at the national finals in October, 2018, too. He also plays at the Melbourne Chess Club and at inter school chess tournaments.

LODGERS: 3G 2018 It has been a wonderful year in 3G, we have learnt a lot about our class members and ourselves. It has been a year of new experiences, school camp at Phillip Island, NAPLAN, becoming the ‘older’ buddies to 1K and working in the BER building. We are proud to say our resilience, confidence and understanding has grown this year in ways we could not have expected. In 3G, we have become independent learners ready to challenge ourselves whenever an opportunity presents itself. We do not give up and we offer words of encouragement to our peers to ensure a positive outcome. This year has been “AWESOME, AMAZING, FANTASTIC, UNBELIEVABLE, INTERESTING and BRILLIANT all at the same time!” – 3G students.

We had lots of interesting animals come in to the school and we got to hold them. It even inspired us to invent our own animals and complete a project all about them. We have had a wonderful year and we are all so sad to say goodbye to 4L. But we are excited for what lies ahead of us!
