A Unique Resale Shop in Salina, Oklahoma

Nestled in the heart of Salina, Oklahoma, The Fuzzy Buffalo stands as a charming beacon for vintage lovers, collectors, and supporters of local artisans. With its warm and nostalgic vibe, the shop, owned by Kevin Murphy, offers an eclectic range of items that span generations and styles From handmade soaps to antiques that tell stories of the past, The Fuzzy Buffalo has carved out its place in the community and beyond. In an interview with Kevin Murphy, we uncover the heart and soul behind this unique shop, from its beginnings to its future plans.

The Origin

When asked what inspired him to start The Fuzzy Buffalo, Kevin shares that it all began with a deep admiration for an old building in Salina and the excitement of bringing it back to life. “I had been a vendor in previous stores, reselling items,” Kevin recalls. “I decided it was the perfect opportunity to open my own shop and help others in the community other crafters, makers, and junkers ” As for the quirky name? Kevin credits a brainstorming session that included his late grandmother: “The ‘fuzzy’ part represents that warm, emotional feeling you get when you see vintage items that remind you of your parents or grandparents. And the buffalo? It’s a triedand-true American symbol, especially here in Oklahoma ”

A Hub Supporting

With 24 vendors contributing to the shop, The Fuzzy Buffalo offers an impressive variety of items, from antiques and vintage finds to locally crafted products Customers can expect to discover home décor, furniture, clothing, and even handmade lotions, candles, jams, and jellies most of which are made within 10 miles of the shop. “We’ve had just about everything come through, including a vintage kitchen sink,” Kevin laughs.

Kevin is passionate about providing a space where local artisans can thrive “When we first opened, none of my vendors had ever been in a shop before,” he explains. By offering them a safe and consistent place to sell their work, The Fuzzy Buffalo became a much-needed outlet for local creators. “It’s great to create a space where they can get more traffic and sell more items,” Kevin notes, adding that about 85% of the shop’s customers come from outside the town, reflecting its growing reputation in the broader Mayes County community.

While The Fuzzy Buffalo started as primarily a vintage and antique store, Kevin quickly realized the value in expanding his offerings. “Vintage items save people money and reduce waste, but there wasn’t much retail in this part of the county So we expanded, adding more handmade and gift items,” Kevin shares Striking a balance between vintage and handmade products ensures that there’s something for everyone. “I always ask potential vendors, ‘What kind of vendor are you maker, crafter, or junker?’ so we can keep the balance right.”

Community and Growth Vintage Meets Modern

The Fuzzy Buffalo does more than sell unique items it actively contributes to the Salina community. From supporting local school groups to hosting raffles and giving back to teachers, the shop plays a key role in town events. “We know everyone needs help,” Kevin says humbly. And there are exciting plans on the horizon: The Fuzzy Buffalo will soon expand with an adjoining coffee shop, offering customers the chance to enjoy a snack while shopping

Keeping It Fuzzy

At the heart of everything is the shop’s motto: “Keep it fuzzy.” This slogan, which embodies warmth, connection, and nostalgia, perfectly sums up the atmosphere Kevin strives to create “I want people to have an overall comfortable experience here,” he says. “It’s not just about the items it’s about the emotional connection they bring, whether it’s something that reminds you of a holiday with family or an heirloom passed down through generations.”

Running The Fuzzy Buffalo has brought Kevin unexpected joy. “The most rewarding part is interacting with my customers,” he says. “I’ve gotten to know so many people that I didn’t know before opening, and learning about them, their families, and their lives has been the best part ” As for advice for aspiring entrepreneurs? “Create your own space and don’t let others dictate it for you,” Kevin advises. “While feedback is great, you need to make it uniquely yours.”

"Hey Kodi! So-and-so told me you helped them book their vacation, and it wasn’t even Disney! Clay and I are itching to travel, but the thought of planning everything? Not so much. Would you help us?" That was the beginning of our conversation, which opened the door to a series of thoughtful questions from Kodi. Where have you thought about going? What do you like to do? Is there anywhere you haven’t been before? Have you ever been on a cruise?

These questions sparked ideas and ultimately landed us on an unforgettable New England & Canada cruise, which you’ll read all about in the next article. But first, let’s talk about Kodi Pianalto the mastermind behind planning the kind of vacations that fit you like a glove.

From orchestrating patient care as a nurse to planning flawless vacations, Kodi Pianalto’s journey to becoming a travel agent is nothing short of magical In 2022, while managing a family trip to Disney World, Kodi realized her talent for organizing the intricate details of a vacation something that stressed others out but brought her joy After successfully planning that trip, Kodi decided to share her skills with the world, leading her to Simple Magic Travel, where she specializes in taking the stress out of vacation planning for families and travelers of all kinds.

“I was planning our second family trip to Disney World,” she recalls. “There were so many moving pieces my parents, my brothers, their significant others. I had spreadsheets for everything. By the end, I was doing all the work and realized, ‘This is fun for me! I should be helping other families with this!’”

Specializing in Disney vacations and cruises, Kodi’s expertise comes naturally. “Disney World is my passion I could plan a trip there in seven minutes,” she laughs But it's not just Disney; her reach spans across cruises, theme parks, and other popular family destinations Kodi emphasizes that her joy comes from taking the weight off her clients' shoulders

“People come to me overwhelmed by the choices especially for big family trips,” Kodi shares. “But for me, breaking it all down into manageable pieces is exciting.”

When asked about her favorite destinations, Kodi is quick to mention two: Disney World and Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay “Castaway Cay was just perfection,” she beams “Everything was included in the cruise fare, and there’s even an adults-only area for total relaxation And, of course, Disney World holds a special place in my heart You don’t have to worry about anything once you get there transportation, dining, entertainment it’s all taken care of, which is exactly what I want in a vacation.”

Kodi’s approach to travel planning is rooted in simplicity. Working with Simple Magic Travel, her goal is to make every vacation as stress-free as possible. “I focus on the basics first: dates, who’s going, budget, and where they want to go. From there, I provide two or three solid options to choose from. We’ll adjust as needed, but I try to keep things from getting overwhelming.”

What truly sets Kodi apart is the personal touch she adds to every trip She doesn’t just book vacations; she builds relationships with her clients, often becoming more like a friend and trusted advisor Kodi tells the heartwarming story of a family she met through Instagram who have a son with special needs “I used to work as a NICU nurse, so we connected instantly. I helped organize their annual Disney trip, including accommodations for their son’s private nurses. Now, I’ve planned multiple trips for them, and we’ve stayed in touch. They even send me pictures of special family moments!”

For those who wonder why they should use a travel agent instead of booking online, Kodi has a simple answer: peace of mind. “Booking on your own means you’re on your own when things go wrong Whether it’s dealing with a hurricane or lastminute changes, travel agents take care of it for you And it doesn’t cost extra!” Kodi adds that many people mistakenly think working with a travel agent will inflate their budget, but she’s quick to dispel that myth

“I don’t upsell. In fact, I’m usually trying to find ways to save my clients money. If a promotion drops, I apply it automatically. Plus, my clients get exclusive resources, like planning guides and packing lists, that they wouldn’t get booking on their own.”

In recent years, Kodi has noticed an exciting trend in travel: people are prioritizing experiences over material things. “More families are cruising now because it offers a convenient way to visit multiple destinations. I’ve also been seeing a rise in families booking vacations without passports, thanks to the flexibility of closed-loop cruises that only require a birth certificate ”

Kodi predicts that in the coming years, cruising from Galveston, Texas, will become even more popular, thanks to Royal Caribbean’s upcoming private beach experiences in Cozumel and Costa Maya. “These new destinations will make shorter cruises from Galveston just as appealing as those departing from Florida. Families will be able to enjoy private beach excursions included in their cruise fare, making it a fantastic option for those living nearby.”

When our travel agent, Kodi Pianalto, first recommended a New England and Canada cruise, I was intrigued. Neither Clay nor I had ever explored that part of the world, but we’d often dreamed of seeing the vibrant fall colors of New England. This trip seemed like the perfect way to blend our love of adventure with our yearning to discover new places. Our vacation kicked off on Friday, September 27, 2024, as we flew into Boston. The following day, we set out to explore the historic city. The weather, thankfully, was perfect sunny and mild, with temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. From walking through Boston Common to the bustling streets of Little Italy, we were immersed in history and culture We stumbled upon Boston’s oldest tavern, the Bell In Hand, and stood in awe of the Holocaust Memorial. Everywhere we turned, there were stories etched into the buildings, streets, and faces of the people around us. Of course, we couldn’t leave Boston without a taste of Clam “Chowda” and my first Irish Coffee both delicious!

On Sunday, we boarded Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas for our week-long journey through coastal New England and Canada Our first stop, St John, New Brunswick, was an unexpected delight. The Reversing Rapids were a sight to behold, and our excursion to the Bay of Fundy revealed natural wonders we wouldn’t have seen on our own. Walking along the tide-exposed caves was surreal, and the clam chowder we enjoyed afterward was a meal to remember.

After a relaxing sea day, we arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where we explored the city on foot. From the serene Public Garden to the historic Citadel, we enjoyed every moment. The day was capped off with a peaceful evening back on the ship, where I woke up early the next morning to catch a breathtaking sunrise as we sailed into Sydney, Nova Scotia. Sydney greeted us with picturesque fog that lifted to reveal colorful houses, green farmlands, and a charming town. Though we didn’t book an excursion, we soaked in the beauty of the place, and the sunset as we sailed away was simply stunning.

Portland, Maine, turned out to be one of our favorite stops We took a tour of the city’s historic neighborhoods, admiring the fall foliage and beautifully decorated homes. But the highlight was Cape Elizabeth’s lighthouse, an iconic landmark we couldn’t get enough of. Our day ended with the most mouthwatering lobster meal at Luke’s on the pier. It was worth the hour-and-a-half wait!

Returning to Boston gave us one last chance to explore before heading home. We visited the USS Constitution, Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, and Cheers, ticking off a few more of the city's highlights As we wrapped up the perfect week, it was time to head back to reality but the journey wasn’t over yet.

Our flight from Boston was delayed by about 30 minutes, which triggered my anxiety about our tight connection in Charlotte. The anding was rough Clay even said, “Feels like we’re coming in hot,” and he wasn’t wrong. It felt like the tail of the plane was about to flip over as we landed and braked hard. Once we finally reached the terminal, I realized our connecting flight was already boarding. We sprinted through the airport huffing and puffing only to see the gate close just as we got there. We’d missed it

It wasn’t the ending we had imagined, but we managed to snag the last two seats on the final flight to Tulsa that night We had a few hours to kill in the airport, which felt like an eternity after an otherwise amazing trip. Once we boarded the last flight, I thought the worst was behind us But then the captain announced that we would experience some turbulence as we climbed to cruising altitude. No big deal, I thought until it hit. This wasn’t your regular turbulence it was the kind that had me gripping Clay’s leg with one hand and the seat in front of me with the other. I could hear other passengers gasp and even scream lightly At one point, I peeked over at Clay, who had his eyes closed and was clearly praying. I decided to leave him to it because I was doing my own version of praying, hoping the bumps would end soon And then, as suddenly as it started, the turbulence smoothed out, and we were sailing through clear skies the rest of the way home

It was an unforgettable adventure, both on land and in the skies. Now, the only question is, Kodi where will our next cruise be?

This cruise was an incredible first experience, combining history, nature, and delicious food, with just a bit of travel drama to make it even more memorable. We can’t wait to plan our next adventure!

Multi-Passionate Entrepreneur Balancing Big Dreams and Small-Town Roots

Amanda Wilkinson is a whirlwind of entrepreneurial spirit and dedication. Her journey began behind a salon chair, but as opportunities unfolded, Amanda found herself diving into ventures she never expected. From owning multiple Vintage Market Days franchises across the country to running her flower business, The Local Petal, and a seasonal farm stand, Amanda’s businesses showcase her versatility and deep connection to her roots.

Starting out in hairstyling, Amanda had a passion for making people feel good and look great. But one day, she stumbled upon an opportunity to sell vintage items, which led to her first vending event This simple step turned into something much bigger when she discovered Vintage Market Days and explored franchise options. By 2017, Amanda was running her first territory. As she gained experience, she expanded, now operating five territories in Dallas/McKinney, East Texas, Connecticut, Vermont, and Pittsburgh

“This started as a little idea, just doing a show here and there, but it has truly grown. Now, with five franchises, it’s a year-round commitment,” Amanda shares. She balances the demands of running these events by hiring help to manage emails and vendor coordination, a rhythm she has refined over time. “It’s repetitive work, but I have some great people on my team,” she adds

Amanda’s love for flowers and gardening led her to start The Local Petal, a custom floral business. She initially thought about opening a greenhouse but eventually found her niche with selective floral arrangements for special events and local businesses. Her farm stand, an unexpected extension of her garden, is another outlet for her creativity and community spirit “The first week I made $75, and it was so rewarding to see people appreciating the fresh produce,” she says, recounting how a note left by a customer thanking her for her efforts now proudly sits on her refrigerator.

Balancing multiple businesses is not without its challenges Amanda admits, “I’m at the point where I realize I can’t do it all. I need help, and I’ve told myself that’s okay.” With a family, including her husband Jarrod and child, Amanda is planning to bring on a full-time business manager. This step will allow her to keep focusing on her passions without compromising her family life

Amanda’s businesses have allowed her to contribute more to her community, something she values deeply. Whether it’s supporting local schools or donating to fundraisers, she takes pride in giving back. Through her businesses, she has also mentored young women, often hiring interns from local schools to expose them to the entrepreneurial world “I want these young women to see what’s possible. They’re learning about things they wouldn’t normally experience, and it’s rewarding to watch them grow,” she says.

Her advice to anyone considering multiple ventures? “It’s possible. It will take a lot of time and energy, but if you’re committed, you’ll get there Be open-minded and don’t hesitate to ask for help. You can’t do it all alone,” Amanda advises.

Amanda’s journey is far from over. She’s eager to get started with her newest Vintage Market Days location in Dallas/McKinney and is already planning her next big step: building a greenhouse “It’ll be a natural next step with my love for flowers and gardening,” she shares

About Willard Stone Museum: Master artist Willard Stone and his legacy are being revived by family members, friends, and a new board of directors. With the new location nestled in the heart of Locust Grove, the Willard Stone Museum is dedicated to preserving the rich legacy of the renowned Native American Artist Willard Stone. We are gearing up for renovation to prepare this location, but phase 1 is still out of our reach. Our museum currently showcases his incredible artwork and tells the story of his life and contributions to the art world. From intricate wood sculptures to compelling drawings, we offer a window into the past and share his vision for the future.

Finding Passion, Achieving Dreams

More About Willard Stone

Having lost his father at a young age and 2 of his fingers on his dominant hand Willard Stone overcame adversity by focusing on his craft and passion for sculpting. He studied under Acee Blue Eagle and Woodrow Crumbo in the mid-1930s. Eventually exhibiting regionally and nationally, Stone gained wide recognition for his stylized human and animal figures created from a variety of locally obtainable woods and occasionally cast in ceramic or bronze.

Willard Stone was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1970. Bacone College awarded him an honorary degree in 1972. Oklahoma Christian College in Oklahoma City designated him a Distinguished American Citizen in 1974 and awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree in 1976. Meanwhile, between 1969 and 1980, he received a total of ten awards in juried competitions at the Five Civilized Tribes Museum in Muskogee including that of Master Artist in 1973. He died on March 5, 1985, and was buried in the family cemetery at his home near Locust Grove.

Stone’s work is preserved in public and private collections throughout the United States and abroad. Several pieces in the Gilcrease collection are unusual in relating to the birth of the atomic age. They are among the few of his works based on a contemporary theme. Important collections of Stone’s work are also found at the current location of the Willard Stone Museum in Locust Grove (which is woefully inadequate in location and size), the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, the Gilcrease Museum, the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ, and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas. His work has also been on display at The White House, the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
