VIBE

I’m a pit bull on a ranch, you see, Where lazy days are made for me.
The trees are buddin’, skies are blue, But don’t expect a thing to do.
I stretch, I yawn, I claim my spot
Right where the sunshine hits just hot.
The breeze rolls in, the world feels new...
But I’ll nap first then maybe move
No rush, no fuss, no fetch today,
Just springtime dreams and dirt to lay.

April moved fast. Life moved faster. This past month demanded all of me in ways I didn’t expect. My time, energy, and attention were wrapped around the needs of those I love most— and in that whirlwind, I lost touch with my rhythm My creativity stalled. My passion sat in the background, quietly waiting for my return. No businesses were interviewed for this issue, and at first, I saw that as a failure. But the truth is, it became a gift. A chance to pause. To reflect. To remember that building something meaningful doesn’t always mean constant motion—it sometimes means planting the seeds of new ideas, quietly tending to your dreams, and giving yourself space to grow.
The May 2025 issue is about that—about planting, cultivating, and eventually reaping Whether you're starting a business, growing a side hustle, or nurturing a passion project, this season reminds us that rest is not the opposite of progress. It’s part of the process.
We didn’t skip a beat—we just shifted the tune. This month, The Vibe leans into reflection, intention, and the power of planting new ideas.

“Where coffee is a big deal”
If you had told my 12-year-old self — sunburned elbow-deep in clay soil swatting at June bugs with a garden hoe — that Id one day willingly grow my own vegetables Id have laughed right in your weeding face
The Secrets in the Soil (and in the Friendships)
Back then, summers meant blisters, dirt under every fingernail, and a swear-tothe-garden-gods vow that I’d never have one of these things when I got older
But life’s funny like that Somewhere between chasing careers and chasing kids, I found myself chasing heirloom tomato seeds through the wind like a scene from a poetic indie film. And I have to admit gardening kind of stole my heart
Zone 7a What to Plant (and When to Dig In)
Here in good ol' Zone 7a, we’ve got a generous growing season — not too hot, not too cold — a literal Goldilocks zone for garden lovers Here's what’s thriving this time of year:
 May Planting Guide
Veggies: Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, corn, beans, okra
Herbs: Basil, thyme, oregano, dill Flowers: Marigolds, zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers (the pollinators will thank you)
Direct Sow: Melons, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes if you’re feeling bold
Let’s talk companion planting — the garden’s version of “you can’t sit with us” unless you benefit the vibe Marigolds near your tomatoes deter pests Basil boosts tomato flavor (yes, really). Corn, beans, and squash? The Three Sisters — a trio older than your Nana’s canning jars Gardening isn’t just a solo gig; it’s a community
The Soul of the Soil
There’s something grounding — literally — about growing food with your own two hands Watching a seed become supper is soul-satisfying in a way store-bought just can’t replicate The snap of a fresh green bean, the sweet tang of a sunwarmed strawberry it’s magic. And don’t even get me started on how smugly proud I feel feeding my family from a garden I once loathed as a child.
Gardening has become my therapy No screens No deadlines Just the rhythm of nature and the soft hum of bees doing their thing while I do mine It’s not just about the food — it’s about peace About purpose About producing something that matters.
A Garden Grown is a Garden Shared
There’s an old saying, “If you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a higher fence” That applies to cucumbers too, y’all Nothing brings people together like a basket of tomatoes or a bouquet of homegrown zinnias Share your abundance Trade, gift, swap We need more neighborly gestures and fewer HOA complaints
Your Turn to Cultivate the Vibe
Now it’s your turn. We want to hear your gardening stories Whether you’re rocking a full-blown farm stand, tending a humble backyard plot, or growing marigolds in mismatched coffee cans you’re part of the vibe
They say one person’s junk is another person’s jackpot and around here, we call it a curated vibe.
There’s something thrilling about stepping into a thrift store or wandering through a yard sale on a Saturday morning, coffee in hand, not knowing if you’ll walk away with a vintage lamp, a designer bag for $3, or a mid-century chair that just needs a little love (and maybe some WD-40) These places aren’t just secondhand they’re second chances waiting to be styled
From the local resale shops in backroad towns to those sketchy estate sales you swore you’d just “peek at,” the hunt is half the fun The other half? Turning those quirky, dusty, overlooked items into something stylish, functional, and completely unique to your space.
That retro metal filing cabinet? Spray paint it matte black and you ’ ve got a modern entryway console. Grandma’s floral teacups? They’re now your new succulent planters And that ’80s mirror with questionable gold trim? With the right room, it screams "eclectic glam" instead of "Golden Girls garage" Every item you find comes with a story it just hasn’t been finished yet And when you mix high-end with hand-me-down, you ’ re not just decorating you ’ re storytelling.
A curated home doesn’t require deep pockets just a good eye and a little imagination Thrifted pieces have a way of grounding a space, adding texture, history, and authenticity. Your office bookshelf? Stack it with old hardbacks, vintage brass animals, and that globe you scored for a buck. Your garden? Hang chipped china from tree branches and turn mismatched chairs into planters Unexpected? Absolutely And unforgettable
Let’s not forget the ultimate high finding something expensive, rare, or collectible for pennies on the dollar A designer coat with tags still on A piece of signed art A Pyrex pattern that collectors go feral for It’s not just luck it’s intuition, darling You’ve got “the eye. ”
In April, something unexpected happened I fell headfirst into a black hole err, rabbit hole of YouTube “shorts.” It all started with a simple scroll and a catchy caption: Thrifted vs Styled That was it Hook, line, and algorithm.
Now, I may be creative when it comes to graphic design, branding, and magazine layouts, but decorating? Let’s just say I usually play it safe with neutrals and pray for Pinterest-worthy outcomes But after bingeing what felt like a thousand clips of people transforming dated décor into dream spaces, a spark lit up in me and it was craving color, character, and a few chipped edges
So, I took myself on a much-needed solo treasurehunting session and found myself at one of my favorite hidden gems The Fuzzy Buffalo in Salina, Oklahoma The name alone deserves a round of applause, but the vibes inside? Even better
I went in with one plan (maybe a lamp or a little wall art), but I walked out with several plans, candle stands, a plant stand, and butter paddles I didn’t know I needed, and a newfound confidence in my ability to style a space that feels more me.
There’s a joy in discovering something that speaks to you something you can’t get from a big-box store It’s personal It’s soulful And when you bring it into your space and give it a second life? That’s when the magic happens.
So, to all the self-proclaimed “not-so-decorators” out there: grab a coffee, turn on some thrift-haul inspo, and hit your local resale shops Your next favorite thing is probably sitting on a dusty shelf, just waiting for someone like you to see its potential
*Note*
Some items pictured were ones already in the house, just rearranged.

Starting a business in a small town is a bit like planting a garden in red clay: it takes grit, vision, and a whole lot of patience. But when done right, it blossoms into something deeply rooted and wildly beautiful
Still, let’s not pretend it’s easy.
Your customer base? Smaller than a high school graduating class.
Foot traffic? Let’s just say it’s more Ford F150s than fancy shoes
And expenses? Oh, they're still big-city size. Supplies, rent, insurance, utilities they don’t offer a “small-town discount ” So yes, your prices may be a little higher than the Facebook bargain hunters would prefer
Cue the Facebook Critics…
You finally post that new menu item, that specialty service, that grand opening announcement and almost instantly, there it is:
“Too expensive. I’ll never shop there.”
Insert dramatic pause followed by a collective eye roll
To those keyboard critics:
If it’s not for you, that’s okay Just keep scrolling not trolling
There’s no need to rain on someone else’s post with your price opinions You wouldn’t walk into a boutique and yell, “I can get this cheaper at Walmart!” so why do it online?
Let’s Talk About Outsiders for a Minute...
And don’t even get me started on outsiders new folks who move into town and have the audacity to bring fresh ideas, bold businesses, and energy into the community
Small towns, we need to talk: why are our walls always up to new people?
We pride ourselves on neighborly love, but sometimes we treat newcomers like they’re crashing a family reunion The truth is, new people bring new life. New businesses bring options, opportunities, and flavor to the local economy
Let’s make that wall a thing of the past. It’s time to welcome change like it’s your favorite pie warm, unexpected, and made with good intention.
Business owners: here’s your reminder You didn’t start your business to be everything to everyone You started it to bring your unique gift to your people the ones who appreciate your vision, value your work, and love your vibe.
So when someone says, “That’s too expensive,” you can calmly say:
“We may not be the cheapest, but we aim to be the most worth it.”
You’re not in business to convince the critics You’re here to serve the ones who already see your worth.
About the Negativity?
Here’s the real strategy equal parts heart and hustle:
1 Own Your Value Out Loud
Educate your audience on the “why” behind your pricing Whether it’s craftsmanship, quality ingredients, one-on-one attention, or boutique service it matters.
2 Respond with Class, Not Sass
If you choose to reply to the grumblers, be graceful:
“We understand we’re not for everyone. We focus on quality and service for those who value that And we’re proud of what we offer ”
3 Let the Trolls Troll Themselves
Some folks just like to complain Don’t take the bait Let your work speak louder than their words and let your loyal customers do the talking for you.
4 Embrace Your People
Stop wasting energy on the ones who’ll never be your customer Focus on building relationships with those who keep coming back and the ones who just moved to town, hoping for something new
You Weren’t Meant to Blend In
To every business owner who’s ever doubted their place in a small town: this is your sign to keep going
You’re not “too expensive.”
You’re not “trying too hard.”
You’re not “doing too much ”
YOU’RE DOING EXACTLY WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE
You’re raising the bar
You’re carving your lane.
You’re bringing something new, bold, and needed
So keep showing up. Keep delivering excellence. Keep doing you, Boo
And to the locals:
Welcome the new faces, support the dreamers, and remember change isn’t scary, it’s necessary
Let’s build communities where businesses can grow, outsiders can belong, and excellence isn’t treated like a threat
Because the truth is:
SUCCESS ISN’T FOR EVERYONE. BUT IT IS FOR THE ONES BRAVE ENOUGH TO START.

You’ve got big ideas, bigger dreams, and the drive to actually do something with them. You’re the type who can’t scroll past a run-down building without imagining a pop-up market, a mural, or the next small-town revival. You’re not just cheering from the sidelines you’re ready to build the stage.
An exclusive, invite-worthy circle of entrepreneurs, business owners, and changemakers who are passionate about growing Northeast Oklahoma from the inside out. If you're fueled by collaboration, inspired by innovation, and slightly obsessed with making your town better this group is for you.
We're not just here to talk we're here to do.
 Share business ideas
 Swap resources
 Support fellow visionaries
Spark collaborations that actually go somewhere
The Visionaries' Guild is hosted in a private Facebook group run by Local Vibe Magazine. Can’t find it? No worries just click the link below and request to join.
Let’s turn passion into progress. Together. Because around here, we don’t just vibe... we build it.
