Where the Smoke, Stories, and Small Towns Rise

There’s something special about the kind of place where folks still wave from their front porch, where a dog show can draw a crowd, and where you can still find a hand-tied fishing lure or a plate of smoked meat that’ll make you reconsider everything you thought you knew about BBQ.

This month’s issue is a toast to the people and places that make Northeast Oklahoma feel like home. We kicked off the season with Locust Grove Founder’s Day—where Main Street came alive with laughter, local vendors, and a parade that reminded us all that tradition still matters. Then we stopped by Big Daddy’s Lures, where craftsmanship and community go hand-in-hand, and finally made our way to Inola for a backyard BBQ experience that’s more than worth the wait in line

It’s easy to get swept up in the hustle of progress, but these stories remind us why we stay rooted. They’re about pride, purpose, and people doing things the right way—not because it’s trendy, but because it’s who they are.

So, here’s to June Here’s to good food, honest work, and local legends in the making.

Warmly (but not too warm—it’s summer, after all),

“Where coffee is a big deal”

Big Daddy’s Impact Beyond the Water

That heart? It belongs to Roy Pridmore better known as "Big Daddy”, and his wife Peggy

The name “Big Daddy’s Lures” was born not in a boardroom, but in a circle of kids learning how to tie fishing lures. Long before there was a storefront, Roy spent his time teaching Boy Scout troops and church groups the art of lure-making “I told the kids I needed a name,” he laughs, “and they came up with Big Daddy” The name stuck and so did the spirit of mentorship that inspired it.

Today, Roy still offers tying classes right inside the shop, passing his skills on to the next generation of anglers “There’s a lot of knowledge inside these walls,” said Rachel, a friend who helps out around the shop “And when someone walks in with a question, they’re going to get answers.”

From Humble Beginn ngs to Commun ty Staple

Big Daddy’s began as a small idea Ron making and selling lures to individuals But word spread quickly As more people began to appreciate the quality and craftsmanship of hand-tied, l

locally made gear, the store grew. Now, Big Daddy’s Lures supplies products across the country from Alaska to New York City and recently signed with Sheels, expanding their reach even further

But despite the growth, the soul of the business remains unchanged “I never expected it to get this big,” Roy admits “But we’re proud of how it’s grown and proud that it’s stayed local ”

The Liar’s Table and Living Room Hosp tality

At the center of the shop sits a large table affectionately called The Liar’s Table a place where stories are swapped over coffee, advice is shared freely, and community happens naturally What started as casual conversations among friends has blossomed into a tradition The team now hosts “Lives at the Liar’s Table” monthly livestreamed events that spotlight fishing tips, product demonstrations, and heartfelt storytelling One of their proudest moments? Showcasing 14year-old Easton Chasteen,

a tying class student who went on to win regional fly-tying competitions "Watching these kids grow that’s the reward,” Roy says.

Hooked on Giving

For Roy and Peggy, the business has always been a means to give back Their Annual Customer Appreciation Day, now in its 7th year, is funded largely from their own pockets with help from local sponsors It’s a full-on celebration, complete with music, giveaways, and appearances from national fishing champions who generously volunteer their time to inspire the next generation.

One year, the event honored WWII veteran Doogie Phillips After being recognized during the celebration, he was gifted a rod and reel in front of an applauding crowd “It was a moment no one will forget,” Peggy shares

But their generosity doesn’t stop there Big Daddy’s Lures donates proceeds from events to causes close to their hearts namely, the Locust Grove Archery Team and Operation Freedom Outdoors, which supports veterans

They also support youth outdoor activities, host junior angler tournaments, and even help veterans afford “honor flights” During youth rifle season, kids can even check in their deer at the shop “It’s about building bonds,” Roy says. “A lot of these kids are fishing or hunting with their parent for the first time”

More Than Hooks and Jigs

Ask Roy what most people don’t realize about running a business like his, and he’ll answer simply: “Patience A lot of hours But it’s worth it especially when you see the excitement on a kid’s face because they spent the day outside with their family”

Peggy agrees “That’s what we want people to feel when they come in Like they’re at home. Like they’re part of the family”

From their hand-painted rooter tails to the 90,000 (give or take) hooks on site, nearly everything in the shop is crafted, tested, and sold with care But in truth, it’s not the gear that keeps customers coming back it’s the people

Roy and Peggy have created something rare A business that operates as a ministry of connection A shop that feels like a second home A place where you come in for bait, and leave with a deeper love for the outdoors and maybe, a little more hope in humanity.

Locust Grove Founder’s Day:

Small Town, Big Vibe

There’s something special about a small town in celebration mode For Locust Grove, that “something” comes dressed in sunshine, the smell of funnel cakes, and the cheerful chaos of turtle races and water wars Founder’s Day made its grand return this year—bigger, better, and brighter than ever and folks, it was downright perfect

Main Street was the heartbeat of the day, lined with vendors offering everything from warm, home-baked goods to handmade crafts, sizzling food truck fare to church fundraisers and smiling local business owners It felt like a living scrapbook every table, tent, and friendly face adding a page to the community’s story

Events brought a mix of nostalgia and new energy Kids squealed through the foam party like it was a sudsy slice of heaven, while the fire department hosted their epic water wars—think Super Soakers with smalltown swagger There was a good oldfashioned hay scramble, a dog show filled with wagging tails and proud owners, and the parade down Main Street tied it all together like a ribbon around a well-loved gift

And let’s not forget the turtle race. Yes, an actual turtle race If you’ve never cheered for a turtle before, Founder’s Day is the place to cross that off your bucket list

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the town gathered for a rodeo under the stars boots dusty, spirits high. It was the kind of day that made you proud to be from here, or wish you were.

I remember when Founder’s Day was the day of the year growing up For a while, it lost a bit of its sparkle—but here we are, with a celebration that’s not just back on its feet, but dancing down Main Street The energy, the turnout, the joy—it’s all thanks to our hardworking Locust Grove Chamber They’ve poured heart and hustle into reviving this tradition, and the results speak for themselves. Shoutout to every hand that helped—your work matters

Founder’s Day reminded us why we love this town. It’s the laughter of kids with sticky fingers, the shared stories between neighbors, the pride in handmade goods, and the comfort of traditions that refuse to fade

If you ’ re anything like me, you ’ re always seeking that hidden gem that does more than satisfy your hunger it offers a story, an experience While scrolling through Facebook one evening, a reel from Tulsa Bites stopped me in my tracks. It highlighted a BBQ spot I’d never heard of before. While most influencers focus on the mouthwatering food, I’m more interested in the people behind the pit, the ones who make it all happen.

CountryMen BBQ in Inola, OK, just a stone’s throw away from Locust Grove The video claimed they’re only open one day a week Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. (unless they sell out early), and you’d better get there early to avoid missing out I couldn’t resist Clay and I made plans to check it out ASAP

Before the dinner rush, I had the opportunity to chat with Joe Walton, one of the co-owners and creators of CountryMen BBQ, along with his wife, Shelby, who he jokingly admits "runs the show" What I discovered was a place where family, food, and community collide with one of the best BBQ experiences I’ve had in a while Grab a seat and meet Joe Walton, the heart behind Countrymen BBQ

A Taste of Countrymen BBQ:

Where BBQ Meets Backyard Vibes in Inola, OK

LVM: Tell me a little about yourself are you from around here (Inola)?

Joe: I was born and raised here, Southeast of town I graduated from high school here 20 years ago, moved a quarter mile down the road to my grandparents’ homeplace They had a ranch just southeast of Inola I married a girl from Broken Arrow, and we’ve been married for 10 years this July We’ve got three little boys who go to school here in Inola Shelby runs the register and basically runs the show around here!

LVM: So, is being a local part of what made you successful?

Joe: I don’t know if I’d say that I wouldn’t necessarily attribute our success to people already knowing us But I’ll admit, it doesn’t hurt!

LVM: Do you think it’s the food, because that was delicious? (before the doors open, Joe or one of his crew, carries a tray of smoked rib tips around for people to nibble on while they’re waiting in line for the doors to open. IT WAS SO GOOD!)

Joe: Oh, definitely Big cred goes to my mom, Rose She runs the back of the house, makes all the sides and desserts with help from my nieces and Ms Tatum Then, me and my nephews do the meat

LVM: Tell me about the first time you

q , in the country, we called the team Countrymen. It just felt right to carry that brand over to the BBQ business

LVM: Describe Countrymen BBQ in three

LVM: What’s something on your menu that surprises people?

Joe: Definitely the beef cheek. We serve it two ways—sliced or shredded like a barbacoa It’s not your typical BBQ fare, but people are always impressed when they try it

LVM: What’s the best reaction you’ve gotten from a customer tasting your BBQ for the first time?

Joe: This one’s easy A foreign exchange student from Germany came in, took a bite, and started crying They asked her what was wrong, and she said, “I’m just sad my family will never get to experience this ” That was one of the best compliments we could’ve received

LVM: What does “community” mean to you, and how have locals supported you?

Joe: It’s all about service Inola is a tight-knit community, and they’ve supported us since day one We try to give back however we can We do a farmer’s market once a month where we have local vendors set up while we cook and serve breakfast and lunch It’s about giving people something special they can’t find anywhere else

LVM: What’s next for Country men BBQ?

Joe: For now, we’re going to stick with what we know We just started opening Friday nights for “Burger Night” during the summer since most of our staff are in high school But we want to keep the quality up, even if that means staying small Sometimes when you scale up, you lose the craft element, and we don’t want that to happen

Country Men BBQ is more than just a place to grab a bite it’s a community gathering spot where family, friends, and good food come together to create lasting memories With a menu full of mouthwatering BBQ, exceptional hospitality, and an undeniable passion for what they do, you’ll quickly see why this Inola gem is becoming a local legend. Stop by on a Saturday night, grab a plate, and experience what Joe and his family have built. You might even find yourself humming a little Smokey and the Bandit because they’re definitely “doing what they say can’t be done.”

Countrymen BBQ is located at 24 W Commercial St, Inola, OK, and they’re open Saturdays from 5 p m to 8 p m (or until they sell out!) Be sure to get there early you don’t want to miss out on this BBQ goodness

THE GUILD

CALLING ALL MOVERS, SHAKERS, AND VISION-MAKERS OF NORTHEAST OKLAHOMA!

You’ve got big ideas, bigger dreams, and the drive to actually do something with them. You’re the type who can’t scroll past a run-down building without imagining a pop-up market, a mural, or the next small-town revival. You’re not just cheering from the sidelines you’re ready to build the stage.

WELCOME TO THE VISIONARIES' GUILD!

An exclusive, invite-worthy circle of entrepreneurs, business owners, and changemakers who are passionate about growing Northeast Oklahoma from the inside out. If you're fueled by collaboration, inspired by innovation, and slightly obsessed with making your town better this group is for you.

We're not just here to talk we're here to do.

 Share business ideas

 Swap resources

 Support fellow visionaries

Spark collaborations that actually go somewhere

The Visionaries' Guild is hosted in a private Facebook group run by Local Vibe Magazine. Can’t find it? No worries just click the link below and request to join.
