BrewHaHa COFFEE
849 S. Vann, Pryor, OK, 74361
“Where coffee is a big deal”

A Goat, A Dream, and the Perfect Roast:

“If someone wants a crazy, relaxing atmosphere to kick back in, they can, ” Kevin explains. “If they want to shop, they can. You can literally get out of your car once and do it all.”
Repurposed, Reimagined,PerkedUp

Step inside Perked Up, and you'll immediately know you’re not in some cookie-cutter corporate café. No baristas shouting orders over a beeping espresso machine. No rushed lines or Wi-Fi zombies glued to screens. Instead, you’re greeted with warm conversation, the aroma of fresh-roasted local coffee, and the charming sight of a goat in the logo— a subtle hint that smiles (and caffeine) are guaranteed to perk you up.

Owner Kevin Murphy didn’t set out to just sell coffee He set out to create connection. The idea for Perked Up wasn’t hatched in a sterile boardroom but in a good old-fashioned “whiteboard session” with his mom They tossed around names and ideas until the perfect one rose to the top After all, who doesn’t perk up at the sight of a goat? Or a good cup of coffee? Or, better yet, both
The space itself has its own story. Once a cluttered, run-down spot next to The Fuzzy Buffalo, it didn’t exactly scream “cozy café” at first glance But Kevin, along with the help of friends and family, worked hard and long hours to transform it into what we see today And he’s the first to admit it will continue to evolve. The goal is to keep making it even more welcoming, more local, and more a part of Salina’s walkable Main Street charm
But don’t mistake this for convenience store coffee Perked Up is unapologetically local. Every cup supports not just Kevin’s dream but those of nearby artisans a local roaster (just 10 miles away) who hand-delivers beans each week, two small-batch bakers supplying pastries and desserts, and even seasonal produce from Mayes County farms It’s coffee with a conscience and a local zip code
Kevin’s passion for coffee isn’t new. It’s practically ancestral He fondly recalls dipping vanilla wafers into coffee with his grandpa, a tradition as essential to his childhood as Saturday morning cartoons were to others Those early memories left their mark Today, he sees coffee as more than a drink it’s a ritual that slows time down, fosters conversation, and brings people together

That vibe is deliberate. Perked Up is small, cozy, and slow-paced by design. Don’t bother looking for a TV on the wall it’s not there, and it won’t be “Why do we need a TV?” Kevin shrugs “That’s too much negative energy People need to pay attention to the people in front of them ”
Here, conversation is the entertainment And Kevin likes to joke about it: “Wifi costs extra, but conversation is free ” (Spoiler alert: there’s no Wi-Fi yet, but he admits they’ll probably cave eventually.)
Perked Up’s menu reflects the same thoughtful, unfussy approach. Egg bakes think quiche you can grab and go feature local ingredients Sweet treats and pastries showcase the talents of area bakers Plans are already brewing for simple sandwiches and locally sourced breads Kevin’s philosophy? Keep it fresh, local, and flexible “We’re a clean slate,” he says. “We’ll evolve.”
Expect seasonal blueberries from across the lake, veggies from local farms, and collaborations with other small businesses It’s all part of the plan to make Mayes County not just a place to live, but a place to savor
Managing two businesses side by side is no small feat Ask Kevin how he does it, and he’ll laugh and confess, “I don’t.”
But the truth is that even in the chaos, he prioritizes what matters most: happy customers and a welcoming vibe The Facebook page for Perked Up surpassed 900 followers just two weeks after launch a testament to the community’s enthusiasm for something new, warm, and refreshingly authentic
When he’s not serving coffee or hunting for antiques to stock at The Fuzzy Buffalo, Kevin is constantly sourcing new products and dreaming up ways to expand He hopes Perked Up will grow into the space next door, offering room for community events, classes on everything from cake decorating to cooking, and a true hub for connection.
He’s practical about it, too. He knows running a small business isn’t easy he jokes the best advice he ever got was, “Don’t do it!” But he’s too stubborn (and too passionate) to listen Instead, he’s committed to making Salina’s Main Street even more inviting, one cup of coffee at a time
So if you’re looking for a place that’s more than just a caffeine stop, Perked Up delivers. It’s a space to slow down, savor something local, and remember what it feels like to connect No matter what the experts say about coffee being good or bad for you, Kevin sums it up best with a grin:
“It’s good for the community if I have my coffee.”
And really, isn’t that reason enough to stop in for a cup?

BISON BUILT:
The Grit and Heart Behind Peggs’ Newest Hometown
Businesses
In a one-chair barbershop on the northwest corner of Cowboy’s Country Store in Peggs, Oklahoma, Steven Clifton sat back for “The Ultimate Man Service” a haircut and mustache trim while talking about roll-off dumpsters, tractor flats, and the unexpected hazards of facial hair near open flames. Turns out, being an entrepreneur in Peggs can singe more than your wallet
From Corporate Clock-Puncher to Local Boss
Steven Clifton isn’t exactly your typical small-town business owner. He’s a blue-collar philosopher, TikTok motivator, race-car tinkerer, single dad of two boys, and the owner of not one but three local businesses:
Bison Land Management
Bison Land Management
Peggs Automotive and Tire
But none of this was part of a grand five-year plan Instead, it was born out of a life pivot.

“I went through a divorce and always wanted to do business of my own, ” Steven says “Working corporate is good, but I was tired of it I took a chance and it’s still paying off ”

Bison Roll-Offs rolled out its first dumpster on July 16, 2024, and it didn’t take long for Steven to realize that trash and the need to haul it is one of those rare recession-proof bets
“People will always have trash,” he grins “Brush to clear, land to clean up… there’s always a need ”
From Corporate Clock-Puncher to Local Boss
What started with Bison Land Management doing dirt work, driveways, and hauling gravel quickly showed Steven another local need: dumpsters So he added Bison Roll-Offs to the mix Because around here, when you clear land, you need somewhere to haul the brush and debris.
Steven shrugs off the idea that these moves were particularly strategic.

“It just turned into one of those deals A necessity That’s kind of my style ”

And because three businesses are better than one? About two and a half months ago, Steven decided to go 100% on his own and leave his old job for good The final push? Opening Peggs Automotive and Tire right in the heart of his hometown.
Peggs is a dot on the map with four churches on Highway 82, a school that goes up to 8th grade, Melody’s Diner, Cowboy’s Country Store and now Steven’s tire shop.
“I like living here I grew up here,” he explains “It’s inconvenient for most people to drive 15 or 20 minutes just to get a flat fixed or their car worked on. Our town is full of farmers, workers, blue-collar people. Time is everything to us. ”

A Welcoming Vibe—and an Unexpected Boom
Despite his self-described gruffness (“I’m not a people person I mean that in the nicest way”), Steven’s businesses are anything but unfriendly.
“Welcoming,” he says, when asked to describe the vibe at all three
The community has responded in kind.
“Actually, really well They’re all glad we ’ re here We’ve been open 10 weeks and we ’ re already booked two weeks out I never imagined the community would respond this quick ”
Farmers now have a local shop that will fix those pesky hay rake flats and front tractor tires without an hour lost on the road.
And unlike those “drop it off and wait” big shops, Peggs Automotive prides itself on quick turnaround and honest billing.

“If we quote you 10 hours and it takes 4, we only charge for 4 If we say 2 hours and it takes 10? We only charge 2 That’s just how we do it ”
Building a Team—And Building Up Others
Steven’s not alone in the shop Tyler, a close friend and mechanic, helps runs much of the day-to-day
“Luckily I can rely on Tyler to take care of the shop,” Steven says “Someday, that shop will be his to manage ”
He’s also got a part-time employee a local high schooler learning the trade per job, per tire Steven hopes it gives the kid a chance to see if wrenching is really his calling.
Because “supporting local” doesn’t stop at buying local it’s also about investing in your neighbors

“If you see someone in need, it doesn’t mean a handout. Just offer something to help pick them up. ”
When Work and Play Blur
What does Steven do for fun? The answer might surprise no one who’s ever met a gearhead
“I go to the race track but that’s still work because I end up working on cars But I love that ”
Otherwise, it’s dad-life with his boys every other week Creek trips Razor rides Trying to leave the shop at 5:30 or 6, even when the work says otherwise
“Stay tuned,” he laughs Small-Town Roots. Big-Time Plans.
Steven Clifton isn’t done. Future business ideas? Oh, he’s got plenty.
He might prefer being alone in his house for two weeks (he claims he’d be just fine), but the truth is clear: he’s built his businesses around connection to his community, to his friends, to his kids
He’s not corporate. He’s Peggs. He’s Bison.

50 Shades of Fit(ish): Hold My Wine
Hello there. Welcome to my midlife adventure in print.
I’m 49 years old. My 50th birthday is six short months away, staring at me from the calendar like a milestone that’s half exciting, half “are you ready for this?”
And I’ve decided to greet it not with dread, but with dumbbells, early mornings, and most importantly a wellearned glass of dry red wine.
Because let’s be clear: I’m not here to sell you some influencer’s chiseled six-pack. I’m here to share a real, determined, occasionally exasperated journey toward feeling strong, healthy, and dare I say it fabulous at 50. Call it “fit(ish).
Why Am I Doing This?
Because one day I realized my metabolism is slower than my Wi-Fi during a thunderstorm. Because I want to get ahead of the aches and pains before they send me an engraved invitation. Because I deserve to feel amazing in my own skin as I enter my next decade. And because it’s never too late to choose yourself even if your schedule says otherwise
What You Can Expect
This isn’t going to be some perfectly curated fitness blog with green smoothies and inspirational mirror selfies. (Okay, maybe one or two if they’re funny.)
It’s going to be real Like sweaty, beet-red postworkout selfies real.
It’s going to be honest Like I chose tacos over cardio honest.

And it’s going to be hopeful Because every month, I’ll share what worked, what didn’t, what was harder than expected, and what kept me going anyway.
And it’s going to be hopeful. Because every month, I’ll share what worked, what didn’t, what was harder than expected, and what kept me going anyway.
My “Plan” (Because I Guess I Need One)
Wake up at 5 a.m. like an overachiever with questionable life choices.
Try not to fly off the treadmill.
Lift things heavy enough to make me feel tough
Practice portion control without crying over nachos.
Move my body every day even if it’s just a walk, stretching, or dancing in the kitchen.
Enjoy my dry red wine, because this is fit(ish), not some monastic vow of abstinence.
I’m inviting you to hold me accountable To laugh with me To cheer me on To nod knowingly at broken resolutions and celebrate the little wins.
And maybe, just maybe, to be inspired to start your own version of fit(ish) whatever that means for you
Because here’s the truth: Aging isn’t the enemy. Giving up is.
So here’s to chasing 50 with intention, humor, grit, and a glass of red held high
Hold my wine. I’m going in.

The Vow

Why Do I Really Want to Do This?
All of the above! I've never thought of myself as vain, though I've realized, over the past several years, it's easier to be a caregiver than focus on myself I've been thinking about this for a long time Since before my 49 birthday But, here I am still sitting on my tush, in front of the computer with a glass of wine Why? because it's easier and it feels soooooo much better! h
My Ultimate 50th Birthday Vibe
I just really want to be "calm, centered, and glowing! I'm not sure I was any of that when I was 20, lol I honestly love being the age that I am, but I feel fat and frumpy I don't want to feel fat and frumpy any more!!
My Biggest Fear in This Journey
Omg!! All of the above! One day in the gym and I can't step up or sit down, lol If I must name it, though Failure! Soreness! Public grunting at the gym! Total meltdown in stretchy pants! That covers it all
What Does “Fit(ish)” Mean to Me?

How Do I Want to Feel in Six Months?
You would ask that Until now, I really hadn't thought about it I'm 49 I don't want to be younger or look younger I just really don't want to look and feel older! I don't want to be frumpy! I want to feel good and feel physically as I do mentally I'm not competing against anyone, other than myself at this very moment I want to feel both confident and energized I don't have a dog to chase, lol I want to feel beautiful

My Signature Reward for Hard Work
Hmmmm
My signature reward is usually a glass of wine, which translates as calories! I think I need to find a new reward
Habits That Need the Boot (or a Firm Talking-To)
I really don't have much late night snacking It's more all day snacking I would say
My worst habit that needs "the boot" would be Excuses! I'm full of them!
Strengths I Already Have
My main strengths would be
I love to wake up early I love mornings! I actually like routine In fact, I've noticed, as I get older, I'm kinda anal about routine If my morning routine gets interrupted, the rest of my day is all out of wack
My Accountability Plan
This is a hard one! I really don't want to rely on my friends or family, because I'm afraid of them knowing when I fail I'd rather rely on my journal My journal isn't judgmental I know, for a fact, my journal loves me unconditionally But
My journal isn't enough
Pep Talk to My Future 50-Year-Old Self
You freakin' did it, however, you, you're not finished You'll never be finished You've got to continue to better yourself daily until your last breath You're on the right path for you!! I love you everyday! I love you through your wins and your failures! You've got this!!

THE GUILD

CALLING ALL MOVERS, SHAKERS, AND VISION-MAKERS OF NORTHEAST OKLAHOMA!
You’ve got big ideas, bigger dreams, and the drive to actually do something with them. You’re the type who can’t scroll past a run-down building without imagining a pop-up market, a mural, or the next small-town revival. You’re not just cheering from the sidelines you’re ready to build the stage.
WELCOME TO THE VISIONARIES' GUILD!
An exclusive, invite-worthy circle of entrepreneurs, business owners, and changemakers who are passionate about growing Northeast Oklahoma from the inside out. If you're fueled by collaboration, inspired by innovation, and slightly obsessed with making your town better this group is for you.
We're not just here to talk we're here to do.
 Share business ideas
 Swap resources
 Support fellow visionaries
Spark collaborations that actually go somewhere
The Visionaries' Guild is hosted in a private Facebook group run by Local Vibe Magazine. Can’t find it? No worries just click the link below and request to join.
