The name given to the month of January is derived from the ancient Roman name Janus who presided over the gate to the new year. He was revered as the God of Gateways, Doorways and of the Journey. Janus protected the Gate of Heaven, and is known as the Lord of Beginnings. He is associated with the Goddess Juno-Janus, and often symbolised by an image of a face that looks forwards and backwards at the same time. So we have the start of a new year which brings new opportunities.
A time when we cast out the old and welcome in the new. We reflect on events of the previous year and resolve improve our personal lives.

The Fylde Coast’s January weather
January on the Fylde Coast can be extreme. High winds cause havoc along the Promenade. On Sunday 11th Jan 2015 huge waves pounded the sea defence from Bispham to Starr Gate, causing flooding and the closure of the Prom.
Engineers had to repair the roof of Blackpool’s £20 million Squire’s Gate tram depot after gales ripped off part of the roof. Roads and Promenade in the Starr Gate area were closed. Tram services were suspended during the morning due to debris on the track.
Tragedy struck North Shore on 5 January 1983 when Scottish holiday maker Alistair Anthony waded into the sea off Gynn Square to rescue his dog. PCs Angela Bradley and Gordon Connolly were among the first to help, but all three were quickly swept away. A road traffic officer, PC Colin Morrison was also overcome by the strong sea.
Conditions were so bad that the Fleetwood lifeboat was unable to get close to the shore. Those four people lost their lives to the January storm. You can pay your respects at a plaque installed at Glynn Square in 2013 to permanently honour the PCs and all the heroes from the emergency services who have died doing their jobs.
Blackpool weather in January is the one of the coldest with an average of just 4°C. The month starts with sunrise around 8am and sunset around 4pm – just 8 hours of daylight. But the days are lengthening and by the end of the month we see 9 hours of daylight.
Of course January is one of our wettest months with 0.9in of rainfall. Sea temperature is around 7°C, so it feels cold. But it’s still possible to swim on still days and go windsurfing or surfing on windy days.
