The Great Train Robbery

In 1560s Lake District miners began using horse drawn wagons on wooden rails to haul coal. When Richard Trevithick built the first steam locomotive in 1804, Britain gave the world the ‘railway’ as we know it today.

In 1911, with its 14 platforms, Blackpool Central was the world’s busiest railway station, ferrying millions of passengers from all over Britain to our golden sands.

Today Blackpool Central is a memory and the Poulton to Fleetwood line is closed. Why?

Because Arriva ran North West trains so badly, its franchise was revoked in 2020 and the service is now run by the Department for Transport. Yet only 5 franchises have been brought back to public ownership. Another 23 franchises continue to see private operators paying

shareholders millions in dividends and whilst running a shambles of a service to the public. Why?

Last year the German government ran a highly successful €9 monthly transport pass to get people onto public transport, reduce their carbon emissions and offset soaring energy costs. Luxembourg has completely free public transport. Next month, whilst we struggle with a cost of living crisis, our rail fares will increase by 5.9%. Why?

Avanti has wrecked the key London to Glasgow service. Only 1 in 3 of their trains arrive on time and 8% of trains are cancelled at the last minute. They have cut 65 trains per day and reduced the Manchester to London service to just 1 train per hour. I have witnessed the result first hand - overcrowding, cancellations, delays, out of use toilets, broken air conditioning, no heating, no food

or drinks and not enough staff. Yet Avanti shareholders have just received a £13.5m dividend. Why?

Services in the north of England and Scotland (away from Westminster) seem to be the worst. TransPennine Express runs Manchester to Hull and is in complete disarray with cases of people lying in train floors and disabled unable to travel at all. Why?

We are forced into rush hour traffic jams because it is cheaper and more reliable to travel to work by car than by rail. Why?

Years of crony capitalism, privatisation, & underinvestment have brought us to this. It’s time for a change.

We deserve a better rail system.

Candlemas

Candlemas falls 40 days after the birth of Jesus and marks the end of the Epiphany season.

The term “Candlemas” refers to the practice whereby a priest on February 2 would bless beeswax candles for use during the year.

Candlemas Eve was the day when Christmas decorations of greenery were removed from people’s homes.

Another tradition holds that anyone who hears funeral bells tolling on Candlemas will soon hear of the death of a close friend or relative; each toll of the bell represents a day that will pass before the unfortunate news is learned.

The Legend Of The Snowdrop

The snowdrop is a symbol of hope. According to legend, after Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden, Eve was about to give up hope that winter would ever end. An angel appeared and transformed snowflakes into snowdrop flowers to prove Spring will come eventually.

NORTHERN FAIL

3 YEARS AGO... FRIDAY 29 FEBRUARY 2020

ARRIVA RAIL NORTH’S LAST DAY

Arriva Rail North Ltd was awarded the franchise to operate trains across the North West from 2016 to 2025. This included trains in the Fylde, Blackpool North & Poulton as well as Preston, Manchester, Manchester Airport, Oxenholme & Windermere.

Arriva Rail North Ltd was owned by Arriva plc, a subsidiary of Deutshce Bahn AG, based in Berlin. Deutschce Bahn is a private company owned by the Federal Republic of Germany.

So ultimate control for 97 million passenger journeys in the North West was passed to the German government. That’s a country that knows how to run trains on time, so no problem there!

Arriva Rail North Ltd made £21 million profit in 2016 and £11.7 million in 2017 for the owners.

However, according to the company’s financial statements, subsidies received from the UK taxpayer during these two years, were about £284m per year. Expensive? It gets worse. In 2018 the subsidy was increased to £404 million!

Speaking to the BBC in 2019, RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said “If that’s not bad enough, these payments are being funded by the UK taxpayer and will end up directly benefitting German state outfit Deutsche Bahn, who own Northern. That is nothing short of a scandal.”

Those of us who travelled from the Fylde by train during these times will wonder, what did we get for our £972 million?

The answer, according to Department of Transport (DafT) is a service it deemed ‘unacceptable’. So unacceptable that the franchise was terminated.

So on Friday 29 February 2020 Arriva Rail North’s last train trundled out of the Fylde and operations were handed to DafT.

On behalf of all readers who use our trains, here’s hoping for a better service in the future.

February weather

According to the Met Office, February is our third driest month of the year! (After April and May). An average of 2.2 inches of rain fell over 11 days of rainfall (1981 to 2010).

The average minimum temperature is 1.7°C, so it’s definitely our coldest month.

Walking along the Prom is chilly and night temperatures regularly drop below freezing. The sea will remain a cold 7°C until May.

However, by the end of February the sun is rising before 7am and giving us almost 11 hours of daylight. However we only average 3 hours of sunshine per day. Daily high temperatures are now regularly around 8°C.

We begin to see more visitors to Blackpool. The Tower, Zoo, the Sandcastle and piers are all open.

The Pleasure Beach is opening at weekends, the Grand and Winter Gardens have shows and February half term school holidays often see the Promenade full. Many people think this is one the best times to visit Blackpool because it is quiet February brings storms.

On 23 February 2017 Storm Doris battered Britain, damaging Colwyn Bay Pier and causing winds of up to 80mph across the Fylde. The previous year, on 21 Feb, Storm Jonas tested the sea defences with gale force winds and storms.

On 13 February 2014 trains were suspended between Preston and Blackpool North because of strong winds and rain. The night of 9 February 1988 saw winds of 84mph recorded at Blackpool Airport.

Saint Valentine’s Day February 14.

St Valentinius was imprisoned for performing weddings for Roman soldiers and for providing help to persecuted Christians.

On the eve of his execution he wrote the first valentine, a letter to the jailer’s daughter, signed ‘From your Valentine’. He was martyred on 14th February AD 269 and buried beneath the Via Flaminia in Rome.

Geoffrey Chaucer first linked St Valentine’s feast with the idea of romatic love in his book ‘Parliament of Foules’ in the fourteenth century.

During the middle ages it was believed that birds paired in mid-February.

WHAT IS LENT?

Lent is the period from Ash Wednesday, 22nd Feb to Thursday, 6th April. The forty day period is symbolic of the forty days spent by Jesus in the wilderness. Also, during the days of Noah, God made it rain for forty days and forty nights. (Lent lasts for 46 days but Sundays are not included.)

In addition, Jonah in his prophecy gave the city of Nineveh forty days’ grace in which to repent. Jesus retreated into the wilderness and fasted for forty days of temptation to prepare for his ministry.

Traditionally the forty days in Lent are marked by fasting, both from foods and festivities, and by other acts of penance. The three traditional practices to be taken up with renewed vigour during Lent are prayer (justice towards God), fasting (justice towards self), and almsgiving (justice towards neighbour).

Today, some people give up something they enjoy, and often give the time or money spent doing that thing to charitable purposes or organisation.
