The Great Train Robbery
In 1560s Lake District miners began using horse drawn wagons on wooden rails to haul coal. When Richard Trevithick built the first steam locomotive in 1804, Britain gave the world the ‘railway’ as we know it today.
In 1911, with its 14 platforms, Blackpool Central was the world’s busiest railway station, ferrying millions of passengers from all over Britain to our golden sands.
Today Blackpool Central is a memory and the Poulton to Fleetwood line is closed. Why?
Because Arriva ran North West trains so badly, its franchise was revoked in 2020 and the service is now run by the Department for Transport. Yet only 5 franchises have been brought back to public ownership. Another 23 franchises continue to see private operators paying
shareholders millions in dividends and whilst running a shambles of a service to the public. Why?
Last year the German government ran a highly successful €9 monthly transport pass to get people onto public transport, reduce their carbon emissions and offset soaring energy costs. Luxembourg has completely free public transport. Next month, whilst we struggle with a cost of living crisis, our rail fares will increase by 5.9%. Why?
Avanti has wrecked the key London to Glasgow service. Only 1 in 3 of their trains arrive on time and 8% of trains are cancelled at the last minute. They have cut 65 trains per day and reduced the Manchester to London service to just 1 train per hour. I have witnessed the result first hand - overcrowding, cancellations, delays, out of use toilets, broken air conditioning, no heating, no food

Learn maritime skills - ashore & afloat with fleetwood’s maritime volunteer service
The Maritime Volunteer Service is a recognised national maritime training organisation and a UK registered charity with more than 25 units around the country providing training to nationally and internationally recognised standards, serving local communities especially in times of need or emergency and taking part in resilience exercises ashore and afloat.
If you have an interest in boats, the sea, going to sea and would like to get involved with your local community here in Fleetwood please do come along to one of our meetings. We meet at The Three Lights 7.30-9.30pm on Thursdays. The first Thursday of the month we meet at the same time but at the Community Fire Station.
The Fleetwood Unit was founded over five years ago. We meet every week for training both ashore and out at sea on Tom Hale our RHIB.
There are many training opportunities within the Maritime Volunteer Service, both on land and when we put to sea. Each member has the opportunity to train in variety of RYA courses including: RYA Basic Navigation and Safety, Course, RYA Day Skipper Theory Course, RYA Diesel Engine Course, RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate Course and RYA First Aid.
Members can also train with materials produced by the MVS covering: Safety at Sea, Operation of Inboard and Outboard Motors, Boat Handling, Vessel Repair and Maintenance, Chart Work and Navigation, Emergency Response such as pollution, vessel command and handling and Deck and Engineering watch keeping
