Four star luxury in the Ribble Valley

Local List visited Gibbon Bridge Hotel & Restaurant for an indulgent weekend...

The four star, award winning Gibbon Bridge has long been a destination, lying just outside the village of Chipping. (We couldn’t resist a trip up Beacon Fell on the way, with spectacular views back over the Fylde, across Morecambe Bay and up to the Lake District.)

Although it was a chilly day, we were welcomed at Gibbon Bridge with huge open fires and a friendly smile. There’s plenty of secure parking, free WiFi, large rooms - and above all, peace and quiet!

You really are stepping into a world of unhurried luxury with very professional staff to ensure everything is just as you wish.

The hotel is set in spacious grounds that slope down to the River Loud which feeds into the Hodder.

Beyond lay the peaceful moors of Bowland. Below you can see the view from the patio overlooking the gardens, river and moors beyond.

Afternoon tea is served from 3pm and the bar (above) is extremely comfortable. It stocks 158 different wines and some great ales. If you have a celebration, there is a wide range of private dining options, indoors and out. Sunday lunch is extremely popular. A tip - check there is no wedding before you book as this will make the hotel very busy.

We found the accommodation to be really cosy, very comfortable with lots of touches of luxury. There are 30 large rooms, some split level, with fabulous views. Two rooms cater for mobility special needs and are close to reception.

Touches of luxury are everywhere. Our bathroom came complete with a Jacuzzi bath. Tip - don’t overdo the bath gel as the whirlpool is very powerful. We managed to create our very own foam party in just a couple of minutes!

The gardens are tranquil and we spent a very pleasant afternoon exploring. There is an outdoor pizza oven and kitchen adjacent to private, heated cabins. Above is the Staple Oak Suite, used as the Honeymoon Suite. It’s magnificent but there’s plenty of space in all rooms. In fact the whole hotel gives you lots of room. There’s a large conservatory restaurant, an Orangery and the Cavalier Lounge, as well as a comfortable patio overlooking the gardens. Owner, Janet Simpson met us at breakfast for a fascinating overview of the story of the hotel to date and some ideas of what the future may hold in store.

Gibbon Bridge has a civil license so it is set up as the ultimate wedding venue, offering everything.

There’s a 5 bedroom flat for the bride’s party to stay pre wedding, a gorgeous wedding chapel, beautiful gardens and plenty of top quality food available.

I’m sure guests will have the most wonderful experience here.

Fine dining is the word with produce sourced either from the kitchen gardens or local suppliers. Bread, biscuits and cakes come from the on site bakery.

The scallop starter above was a perfect example of the imaginative cuisine on offer. Service, presentation and taste make for a wonderful dining experience.

Above is the succulent Roast Pheasant Breast. The local game and fish is excellent. Most items on the menu can be altered to be cooked as gluten-free, so the choice is still wide.

Coming events include Musical Afternoon Teas, Mother’s Day Lunch, Wine Tasting Evenings and Easter Lunches. We’ll be returning as these offer great value.

We felt the Gibbon Bridge is perfect for a minibreak, while lunch here makes a delightful day out.
