Award Winning Food on the banks of the Wyre

Local List recently visited the Cartford Inn on the banks of the Wyre for a meal & overnight stay...

Recommended to us by a colleague , it certainly lived up our expectations.

The classy Cartford was rescued by Julie & Patrick Beaume in 2007 and is now nationally recognised as one of the best restaurants in the North West.

Situated on the beautiful banks of the Wyre, the Cartford is peaceful, serene and offers interesting walking into the surrounding countryside.

There is a lot on offer. Not only it is a cosy pub with oak beams and open fires, but the French influenced restaurant serves fine dining. In addition a deli, art gallery, tearoom & dining areas lie to the rear. There’s a large car park as well.

Staff were friendly and quick to advise us on everything from the best local walks, the wines on offer, accommodation and more.

There are 15 rooms and 2 luxury cabins, many with wonderful views of the river and countryside. Free wi-fi, cosy rooms and a glorious breakfast made our stay truly memorable.

The Cartford is a fine traditional inn opposite the toll bridge. It is warm, welcoming and cosy. It is decorated throughout with quirky art from local artists and glassware from John Ditchfield. In fact we were so impressed we called in to see John in his studio at Glasform on Fleetwood Road, by Windy Harbour.

With growing concerns about Covid, the tranquil atmosphere was perfect for recharging our batteries and we returned rejuvenated to the Local List office.

The Inn has been thoughtfully extended and offers a deli stocked with locally sourced cheeses, meats, breads & chocolates. There’s also a delightful tearoom. To ensure you can eat and drink in any weather there are outdoor heated seating rooms so you can enjoy food and drink with family and friends.

After our local walk, staff were happy to serve us cocktails whilst we enjoyed the warmth of the outside log burner. This was a pleasant refresher before our evening meal.

Before we left we enjoyed looking around the wonderful art gallery run by the talented jeweller Tanicia.

Our food was outstanding. The breakfast above was just one of many choices to start the day. Then to the seasonal Autumn restaurant menu which covers all tastes. Steaks were perfect from the grill, freshly caught local fish was tempting but I opted for the classic Moules Mariniere. There was a good selection of local beers and the wines are top quality.

A special mention must go to the talented chef Chris Bury who has created a truly outstanding menu. I was fortunate to sample the superb Goosnargh Duck breast which is one of several excellent gluten-free options.

The Cartford is the perfect retreat. It’s peaceful with enough going on to make the stay interesting. We liked the new additions that made eating out in any weather possible.

Our stay was total success and we look forward to returning in the new year.
