Winter can be a beautiful season, but the cold, dry air, combined with indoor heating, can wreak havoc on your skin, especially your face. If you're wondering how to maintain a healthy, glowing complexion when the temperatures drop, you're not alone.
The good news is that with the right skincare routine and a few lifestyle changes, you can protect your skin and keep it nourished during the harsh winter months.
During winter, the air outside is cold and dry, which can deplete your skin’s natural moisture. Indoor heating systems can
make matters worse by creating an even drier environment. The lack of humidity in the air reduces your skin’s ability to retain water, leaving it prone to dryness, redness, and irritation. For those with sensitive or dry skin, winter can lead to chapped skin, cracking, and a dull complexion. On the other hand, people with oily skin may also notice changes, such as breakouts or increased oil production as their skin compensates for the loss of moisture.

Healthy, Hydrated Skin During Winter
To keep your face healthy and glowing throughout winter, follow these practical tips to protect, hydrate, and nourish your skin.
SWITCH TO A HYDRATING CLEANSER
In winter, your regular cleanser might be too harsh. Many cleansers, especially those containing sulphates, can strip your skin of its natural oils, making it feel tight and dry. Instead, opt for a creamy or oil-based cleanser that is hydrating and gentle on the skin. Look for products that are fragrancefree and designed for dry or sensitive skin types.
EXFOLIATE GENTLY (BUT DON’T OVERDO IT)
Exfoliation is important for removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover, but over-exfoliating can make your skin even drier. During the winter, limit exfoliation to once or twice a week and use a gentle scrub or exfoliating product with mild acids like lactic or glycolic acid. Be cautious not to scrub too hard or use abrasive physical exfoliators, as these can irritate the skin.
HYDRATE WITH A RICH MOISTURISER
Your skin’s moisture barrier is crucial in winter, so make sure to keep it well-

moisturised. A thick, nourishing moisturiser will lock in hydration and prevent moisture loss. Look for creams containing humectants like hyaluronic acid, which attracts moisture to the skin, and occlusives like shea butter or ceramides, which help form a protective layer. Apply your moisturiser right after cleansing when your skin is still slightly damp to lock in extra moisture.
ADD A HYDRATING SERUM
OR OIL
Consider incorporating a hydrating serum or facial oil into your winter skincare routine. Serums that contain hyaluronic acid or glycerine help to attract moisture and hydrate the skin at a deeper level. If your skin is extremely dry, a facial oil can provide an extra layer of protection, sealing in moisture and preventing water loss. Be sure to choose a non-comedogenic oil to avoid clogging your pores.
DON’T SKIP SUNSCREEN
Winter doesn’t mean you can skip sunscreen. UV rays can damage your skin year-round, even when it's cloudy or snowy. In fact, snow can reflect UV rays, making the sun's effects even stronger. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin, including your face, neck, and hands, every day, even when indoors or on cloudy days.
USE A HUMIDIFIER
Indoor heating can dry out the air and strip moisture from your skin. A humidifier can add moisture back into the air, helping to prevent your skin from becoming overly dry. This is particularly helpful at night when you’re sleeping, as it can create a more hydrated environment for your skin.
PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE ELEMENTS
Winter winds can cause redness, irritation, and dryness, especially on the more vulnerable skin on your face. Always protect your skin with a scarf or face mask when heading outdoors, especially if it’s windy. Make sure to cover areas like your cheeks, nose, and chin, which are particularly exposed to the elements.
AVOID HARSH PRODUCTS
Avoid using products with strong alcohols or fragrances during the winter, as they can irritate and dry out your skin. Stick to gentle, fragrance-free formulations that are designed to hydrate and soothe the skin. Be mindful of acne treatments too—some acne products, such as those containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, can dry out the skin, making winter dryness worse.
STAY HYDRATED AND EAT NOURISHING FOODS
Staying hydrated from the inside out is just as important as using topical skincare products. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help keep your skin hydrated. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds, can also help improve skin hydration. In addition, antioxidants like vitamin C (found in citrus fruits and leafy greens) can protect the skin from damage caused by cold weather.
Focus on moisturising, gentle cleansing, and protecting your skin from the elements. Don’t forget to hydrate and use sunscreen year-round. By following these tips, you can help ensure your skin stays healthy, nourished, and glowing all winter long.

Sing & Stroll
North Croydon Walking for Mental and Physical Wellbeing
By Dr Catherine Pestano

Social isolation is a national public health concern. It has only worsened following the pandemic, as existing leisure and community activity groups experienced disruption, with some closing, including the council’s once widespread Healthy Walk scheme. Did you know that in Croydon, there are at least ten thousand older adults experiencing loneliness, over half of these intensely? And over 17,000 Croydon adults of working age experiencing social isolation also. It is easy to understand how this can happen with job relocations, relationship changes, and bereavements, which are a part of everyday urban life. We
are often far from family, and friends often move for a better quality of life.
It may be a comfort to know that we are not on our own in feeling this. The good news is that we don’t have to carry on feeling this way. Somewhere nearby, there will be something for each of us to bring us back into a life involved with others and the pleasures of simple, positive human company.
Croydon is lucky to have many small local projects and clubs to connect with where people can make new friends through shared interests. One area to explore is
becoming more active through walking in the outdoors. The North of the Borough has many beautiful parks, but sometimes people may have concerns about who they may encounter and how safe they may be on their own. As one local walk leader, Kate, says, “Taking time in nature is known for its calming and health benefits, but walking alone can be something that many people avoid”. Group walking of a gentle nature is welcoming and accessible for all ages and it enables us to walk feeling secure in our local area. We can take time to wander, wonder and marvel at small moments of delight and tranquillity. Walkers can move

on to more intensive walking in other more vigorous walking organisations, such as the Ramblers or COPSE.
Transport for London has been generously funding projects that help communities to become more active and through these projects, people often form new connections. The scheme - Walking and Cycling grants - has been delivered for the past few years through Groundworks.
In an exciting new development, a 2025 Sing and Stroll project has been given the green light. 13 sessions of daytime and early evening walking (Summer) will be
led around the natural green spaces in the North of the Borough. An enjoyable stroll with singing at various stop points of natural beauty will conclude with refreshments and social time together. These strolls will be led by a trained walk leader and develop into a volunteer-led service as our volunteers train and build confidence. If you are interested in being trained in walk leading please do get in contact with Creative Croydon CIC.
Local past awardees currently running their continuation projects include: Aspara Arts walking group in Coombe woods, and Nordic walking groups run by Communities

First based at Selhurst Sports Arena near the station. You can walk with a dog, and its owner in the Crystal Palace area Care Dogs scheme, and the Croydon Federation of Mosques has a Moonwalk project. Walk and Talk at Lloyd Park offers a global majority walking support group to help with group members’ well-being goals. In Thornton Heath a walk, talk and support group is available for adults with learning disabilities. Each of these initiatives offers something precious – the chance to be active in a way that is not too exhausting and get to make new connections that may develop into friendships, strengthening our community lives in Croydon.
Get involved: if you would like to train as a volunteer walk leader or just come out for an enjoyable easy walk in nature, in the North of the borough, or attend the official launch, then do get in touch: Home - Creative Croydon creativecroydon@gmail.com

JANUARY DRY
A Refreshing Start to the Year

The beginning of a new year often inspires people to set goals and embrace healthier habits. Among the growing trends aimed at personal wellbeing, Dry January has become a popular choice for individuals seeking a reset. This month-long abstinence from alcohol offers numerous physical, mental, and social benefits while fostering a mindful approach to drinking habits.
Dry January originated in 2013 as a public health campaign by the British organisation Alcohol Change UK. The initiative encourages participants to abstain from alcohol for the entire month of January. Since its inception, Dry January has grown into a global movement, with millions of participants embracing the challenge to kick off their year on a healthy note.
Many people see Dry January as a chance to assess their relationship with alcohol. Whether someone drinks socially or regularly, taking a month off can provide valuable insights and benefits, such as improved physical health. Cutting out alcohol can lead to better sleep, as alcohol disrupts sleep patterns. It often results in deeper, more restorative rest. Participants frequently report boosted energy levels since alcohol's dehydrating and energysapping effects are no longer in play. It can
also contribute to weight loss, as alcohol is calorie-dense, and its removal can lead to noticeable changes. Another benefit is improved liver health, as the organ gets a chance to repair and regenerate.
Mental clarity is another significant benefit. Many participants experience sharper focus since alcohol can cloud judgment and slow cognitive function. Reduced anxiety is commonly reported as well because alcohol can heighten anxiety levels, especially after a night of drinking. Taking a break often leads to a calmer, more balanced state of mind.
Financial savings are a welcome perk. Alcohol can be expensive, and skipping it for a month can significantly reduce spending on nights out, bottles of wine, or rounds at the bar. Additionally, the experience often enhances social awareness. Participants frequently discover creative ways to socialise without alcohol, exploring new hobbies, non-alcoholic beverages, and activities that don't centre around drinking. To succeed in Dry January, it's important to set clear goals. Identifying your reasons for participating, whether for better health, saving money, or personal growth, helps sustain motivation. Finding alternatives, such as non-alcoholic beverages like sparkling water, mocktails, or herbal teas,
makes abstaining easier. Encouraging friends or family to join you can provide a support system, making the challenge more enjoyable and less isolating. Tracking your progress through a journal or app allows you to reflect on changes in how you feel physically, mentally, and financially. Being prepared for social situations, with a ready response like, "I'm taking a break from alcohol this month," helps navigate interactions with ease.
For many participants, Dry January serves as a stepping stone toward a more mindful approach to alcohol consumption. Some may return to drinking with a renewed sense of moderation, while others may decide to continue abstaining. The key takeaway is that Dry January empowers individuals to reassess their habits and make informed choices about their health and lifestyle.
Dry January is more than just a challenge; it's an opportunity to prioritise your wellbeing and start the year with a clear mind and a healthy body. Whether it's your first time participating or a yearly tradition, taking a break from alcohol can set the tone for a positive and productive year ahead. So raise a glass of sparkling water and toast to a Dry January—a small step with lasting impact.

We thought this year we would do something different with our Xmas recipes and show some love for sides and starters which play an important role in preparing and making an awesome festive feast!
Starters

MAKES: 2 TARTS
INGREDIENTS
• 3 tbsp olive oil
• 6 medium red onions, finely sliced
• 5 tbsp red wine vinegar
• 100g cranberry sauce
• 1kg sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into small chunks
• 1 tsp chilli flakes
• 2 x 320g sheets ready-rolled puff pastry
• 3 x 100g soft goat's cheese, with rind, broken into large chunks
• beaten egg, for glazing
• thyme sprigs, to serve
• a large salad, to serve
METHOD
Step 1
Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Heat 2 tbsp of the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and cook the onions over a low heat for 20-25 mins or until well softened and lightly browned. Add the vinegar and cranberry sauce, and simmer for 5-10 mins more, stirring until almost all the liquid has disappeared. Leave to cool.
Step 2
Meanwhile, put the sweet potatoes in a bowl and toss with the remaining oil, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp pepper and the chilli flakes. Arrange on a baking tray and cook for 20 mins, turning halfway, until softened and lightly browned. Leave to cool.
Step 3
Reduce oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line two large baking trays with baking parchment and unroll the pastry sheets on top – trimming the edges neatly at this point will encourage a good rise. Leaving a 2cm gap around the edge, spread the onions over the pastry, then top with the sweet potatoes and goat’s cheese. Brush the beaten egg around the border of the pastry and bake in the oven for 35-40 mins or until the pastry is golden and crisp, swapping the shelves after 20 mins.
Step 4
Scatter over the thyme, then cut each tart into quarters (or smaller pieces if serving more). Serve with a large leafy salad.

INGREDIENTS
• 225g frozen raw peeled king prawns, defrosted
• 100ml buttermilk (if you can’t find buttermilk, mix the same amount of yogurt with the juice of ½ lemon)
• ½ iceberg lettuce, shredded
For the Cajun seasoning
• 3 tbsp smoked paprika
• ½ tbsp ground black pepper
• ½ tbsp ground white pepper
• 1½ tbsp garlic powder
• 1½ tbsp onion powder
• 2 tsp dried oregano
• 1 tsp dried thyme
• 1-2 tsp cayenne pepper (to taste)
METHOD
Step 1
• 1 ripe avocado, stoned, halved, peeled and thinly sliced crosswise
• vegetable oil, for frying
• finely chopped chives, to garnish
For the sauce
• 4 tbsp mayonnaise
• 4 tbsp tomato ketchup
• 3 tsp capers, drained and finely chopped
• 30g gherkins, finely chopped
For the coating
• 100g plain flour
• 100g fine cornmeal or polenta
• 2 tsp baking powder
First, combine all the ingredients for the Cajun seasoning. Mix the prawns with the buttermilk and 3 tbsp of the Cajun seasoning in a large bowl, then set aside.
Step 2
To make the sauce, combine all the ingredients in a small bowl. Season and set aside. Combine all the ingredients for the coating in a separate bowl with the remaining Cajun seasoning and a pinch of salt, then set aside.
Step 3
Take one prawn at a time, gently shake off any excess buttermilk mixture, then dip into the coating using a fork, turning to ensure it is fully covered before transferring to a plate. Leave to rest for 15 mins.
Step 4
Fill each glass almost to the top with lettuce, then spoon 2 tbsp of the sauce into each. Divide the avocado slices between four martini glasses, arranging them in a fan against the rim of each glass, so the tops are sticking up over the rims.
Step 5
Heat a 10cm depth of oil in a shallow saucepan or deep-fat fryer until it reaches 180C, or when a cube of bread dropped into the oil browns within 20 seconds. Fry the coated prawns in batches of 10 for 4-5 mins per batch until golden and crisp. Transfer to a plate lined with kitchen paper using a slotted spoon and leave to drain. Repeat until all the prawns are cooked, then season with salt and divide between the glasses. Sprinkle over the chives.

METHOD
Step 1
Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat. Put the brussels sprouts in the pan, cut-side down, and leave them to fry for 10-15 mins, tossing occasionally. If they’re just lightly brown, carry on cooking for a further 5 mins until blistered.
Step 2

Honeyed Beetroot & Carrot Salad with Feta & Hazelnuts
INGREDIENTS
• 4 carrots (about 450g), cut into batons
• 4 beetroots (about 450g), peeled and cut into thin wedges
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 150g quinoa and bulgur wheat mix
• 2 tbsp honey
• 2 lemons, zested and juiced
• 1 orange, zested and juiced
• 1 tsp ground cumin
• 1 tsp ground coriander
• 75g hazelnuts, roughly chopped
• 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
• small bunch of mint leaves, picked and chopped
• small bunch of parsley, chopped
• small bunch of dill, chopped
• 200g feta
METHOD
Step 1
Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas
6. Tip the carrots and beetroot wedges into a roasting tin, drizzle with the olive oil and season. Toss to coat and roast for 25 mins.
Step 2
Meanwhile, cook the quinoa and bulgur wheat mixture in a pan of boiling salted water following pack instructions. Drain in a sieve, then set aside to cool slightly.
Step 3
Combine the honey, lemon zest, orange zest and juice, the cumin and coriander. Remove the tin from the oven and pour the honey mixture over the veg. Stir, then scatter over the hazelnuts and return to the oven for another 10 mins.
Step 4
Tip the cooked grains onto a serving platter. Squeeze over the lemon juice and drizzle with the extra virgin olive oil. Top with most of the herbs and the feta, season well, and toss together. Pile the roasted veg and hazelnuts on top, pouring over any roasting juices from the tin. Scatter with the remaining herbs just before serving. Best served warm or at room temperature.

Spinach, Beetroot & Goat’s Cheese
INGREDIENTS
• 400g spinach
• 5 eggs, separated
• 3 tbsp self-raising flour
• 1 tbsp melted butter
• 1 tbsp milk
• 2 peeled and cooked beetroots (around 200g), roughly chopped
• 250g soft goat's cheese
• 3 tbsp chopped dill, tarragon or chives plus extra to serve
METHOD
Step 1
Heat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5 and line a Swiss roll tin (ours was 23 x 32cm) with baking parchment. Tip the spinach into a large heatproof bowl with 1 tsp water and wilt in the microwave for a total of 2 mins, checking it after each 30-second burst. Or, wilt in a pan with 1 tbsp water over a medium heat. Leave the spinach to cool, then squeeze out as much excess liquid as possible by tipping into a clean tea towel and wringing it out, or press against a colander using the back of a large spoon.
Step 2
Transfer the spinach to a food processor with the egg yolks, flour, melted butter, milk and a good pinch each of salt and pepper. Blitz until the spinach is finely chopped and the ingredients are well mixed. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Carefully fold the whipped egg whites into the spinach mixture until combined. Tip into the prepared tin and gently spread out into an even layer. Bake for 12-15 mins until puffed up slightly and firm to the touch.
Step 3
Meanwhile, wash out the food processor and tip in the beetroots, goat’s cheese and herbs. Season well and blitz to a purée, then spoon 3 tbsp of the filling into a piping bag and set aside. Spoon the remainder of the filling into a bowl, then both the bowl and piping bag in the fridge until needed, to firm up a little.
Step 4
Lay a sheet of baking parchment on a work surface and turn the spinach roulade out onto it. Carefully peel off the original baking parchment, then roll up into a tight spiral from one of the short ends, using the piece of parchment below to help you. Leave the roulade, still rolled up, to cool for 10 mins, then carefully unroll and spread over the beetroot filling from the bowl. Roll up again and transfer to a serving board or plate. Pipe blobs of the filling over the roulade using the piping bag, then scatter with extra herbs. Slice to serve.

The "Very Demure, Very Mindful" Trend
A Light-hearted Take on Self-Presentation

The latest viral sensation sweeping across social media platforms, particularly TikTok, is the "Very Demure, Very Mindful" trend. This phenomenon, which began as a satirical take on workplace etiquette, has evolved into a versatile meme that users are adapting to various aspects of daily life.
The trend was sparked by beauty influencer Jools Lebron, who shared a 40-second TikTok video showcasing a polished makeup look while describing herself as "very demure, very mindful." In her video, Lebron humorously emphasised the importance of presenting oneself appropriately in professional settings.
At its heart, the trend capitalised on irony. By exaggerating the pursuit of mindfulness, it encouraged audiences to laugh at their own attempts to appear “puttogether.” However, the humour also opened the door to a deeper conversation: What does
on self-compassion within wellness circles. By laughing at the absurdity of striving for perfection, individuals are encouraged to embrace their flaws and focus on what truly matters: being present and kind to themselves.
The trend’s cultural impact extends beyond social media. It has inspired workshops, art exhibitions, and even merchandise that celebrate the juxtaposition of mindfulness and humour. For example, meditation classes now incorporate comedic storytelling to help participants release tension, while mindfulness journals are being sold with prompts like, "What’s one embarrassing thing you’ve done recently, and why does it make you human?"
Moreover, it has challenged wellness industries to rethink their messaging. Instead of promoting unattainable ideals, there’s a shift toward celebrating mindfulness as a practice rooted in authenticity and individuality.
A Lasting Movement?
Like most trends, "Very Demure, Very Mindful" may eventually fade from the spotlight. However, its core message—that mindfulness doesn’t have to be perfect, and humour can be a powerful tool for self-reflection—will likely endure.
As society continues to navigate the complexities of modern life, this movement serves as a reminder that sometimes, the best way to be “very mindful” is to laugh at ourselves, accept our imperfections, and simply try again tomorrow.
Whether you find yourself spilling tea on your yoga mat or missing a moment of calm because your mind wandered to your grocery list, remember: You’re doing fine. And if nothing else, at least you’re “Very Demure, Very Mindful”—or close enough.
mindfulness actually mean in a world where everything feels curated for public consumption?
For many, the answer has been to reclaim mindfulness as a personal, imperfect journey rather than a performance. The hashtag #VeryDemureVeryMindful now features posts ranging from genuinely reflective moments—like journaling about a tough day—to light-hearted admissions of failure, such as spilling coffee during a morning meditation.
One of the reasons this trend has gained traction is its ability to balance humour with sincerity. Traditional portrayals of mindfulness often focus on achieving an ideal state of calm and composure, which can feel unattainable or even alienating. By contrast, the "Very Demure, Very Mindful" movement acknowledges that life is messy—and that’s okay.
This comedic approach aligns with the growing emphasis

A seasonof care
Christmas is often seen as a time of joy and connection, but for many, it also brings hidden challenges—loneliness, pressure, and the weight of expectations.
The endless lists of gifts, meals, and gatherings can blur the true essence of the season, leaving us overwhelmed instead of uplifted. Instead of striving for perfection, why not embrace imperfection? Focus on the moments that truly matter— shared laughter, quiet pauses, or simply being present. These small, meaningful moments can bring the connection and joy we often chase in a more soulful way.
If you feel overwhelmed, give yourself permission to ask for help. Sharing tasks, whether it’s cooking or planning, can lighten the load and foster connection rather than signalling weakness. Carve out moments for stillness—a short pause can bring a sense of calm that
steadies you amidst this holiday rush.
Christmas often equates love with material gifts, but true generosity doesn’t need to come with financial strain. Your time, care, and presence are the most cherished offerings. A handwritten note, a shared walk, or a homemade treat often carries more meaning than anything bought. And remember that setting a budget isn’t a restriction but an act of self-care. Thoughtful, intentional choices that prioritise connection over consumption can make the season feel richer. Memories created through baking cookies, crafting decorations, or singing carols together linger far longer than store-bought trinkets.

Loneliness During the Holidays
Loneliness during the holidays can feel amplified by images of connection, but you’re not alone. Small steps, such as making a phone call, joining a community group, or volunteering your time, can weave meaningful threads of connection. Find comfort in simple rituals—savouring tea, journaling, or lighting a candle to ground yourself and bring moments of peace amidst the season's busyness.

Honouring Your Story

Not everyone feels joy during Christmas. Grief, anxiety, or simply a lack of cheer deserve space too. Let yourself feel what you need to feel. Seek solace in comforting rituals or trusted connections, and don’t hesitate to ask for support if the weight feels too heavy.
This Christmas, perhaps the greatest gift we can offer is a simple one: kindness. To others, yes—but also to ourselves. By acknowledging our limits, nurturing our well-being, and embracing
the imperfections of life, we create space for genuine joy.
The true spirit of Christmas isn’t found in its busyness but in its stillness. In quiet moments of connection. In warmth shared. In the courage to let go of what doesn’t serve us and to embrace what does.
May this season be one of tenderness, care, and renewal—a reminder that even amidst the challenges, the light of hope and love shines ever bright.

Balancing Motherhood, Career, and Social Life
A Profound Challenge in a Woman's Life
Balancing the roles of motherhood, career, and social life is one of the most significant challenges women face. It's not just about juggling tasks but about navigating each role's emotional, societal, and personal dimensions. For many women, especially us mothers, these competing demands can feel like a tightrope—trying to give enough to each role without losing ourselves in the process. The key lies in self-awareness, self-compassion, and embracing individuality. Let's delve into the heart of this challenge and how women can navigate it while finding fulfilment.
Breaking the Chains of Expectations
In today's world, judgment is everywhere. A working mother might be labelled "too ambitious," while a stay-at-home mom might be deemed "unmotivated." Social media compounds this issue, projecting unrealistic images of women who effortlessly balance everything. But behind those perfect portrayals is the truth: every woman's circumstances, strengths, and struggles are unique.
For many mothers, this judgment can cut deeply. We often question if we're doing enough for our children, if our career choices are right, or if we're spending enough time nurturing friendships. But judgment, whether from society or ourselves, creates unnecessary guilt. Women often internalise these criticisms, questioning their worth or choices.
As a mother, I've learned there's no universal definition of "doing it right." Embracing a no-judgment philosophy is transformative. It means letting go of societal pressures and allowing yourself to live in alignment with your own values, not someone else's standards. Judgmentfree living fosters self-acceptance, enabling women to embrace the beauty of their unique journeys.
Everyone's Path is Different
One of the deepest truths about balancing life is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The roles of mother, professional, and friend carry different weights for every woman. What fulfils one person might overwhelm another. Some women thrive in
By D.M.
a fast-paced career while raising children and maintaining a vibrant social life. Others find joy in dedicating themselves more fully to their family or personal passions. These differences are not shortcomings— they're reflections of individuality.
Recognising this allows women to shed the burden of comparison. Instead of asking, "Am I doing as much as she is?" ask, "Am I doing what's right for me and my loved ones?"
This approach also opens the door to selfdiscovery. What are your core values? What truly brings you joy and fulfilment? These answers evolve over time, shaped by life's changes. Parenthood might deepen your appreciation for home life, or a fulfilling career might inspire you to carve out more family moments. The beauty lies in tailoring your balance to match your reality.
Let Go of Perfection
The concept of balance often feels like an impossible ideal. Society paints a picture of women who excel in every role, always giving 100%—a myth that fuels stress
and burnout. Proper balance isn't about achieving perfection in every aspect of life; it's about finding harmony over time. For mothers, it means recognising that priorities shift. There will be seasons when your career demands more attention, and others when family takes precedence. There will be weeks when you prioritise social connections and times when self-care requires stepping back. Balance isn't a static state but an ongoing process of adjustment. It's also about setting realistic expectations. Be honest with yourself about what you can accomplish and allow room for imperfection. I've learned that saying "no" to one thing often means saying "yes" to something more important for myself and my family.
The Emotional Depth of the Balancing Act
Balancing these roles is more than just time management—it's an emotional journey. Guilt is a frequent companion for many women, especially mothers. I've felt the guilt of missing milestones at home due to work or scaling back on my career to focus on family. These feelings are natural, but they shouldn't define us.
At its core, balance is about self-respect. It's about understanding our limits and treating ourselves with the kindness we extend to others. It's about valuing our contributions, whether they're at home, at work, or in our community. By practising self-compassion, we build emotional resilience, which is vital for navigating life's complexities.
Acceptance and Growth
The journey of balancing motherhood, career, and social life is ultimately about growth. It’s about discovering who you are, what you value, and how you want to live. It’s about learning to adapt to life’s ebbs and flows while staying true to yourself. We mothers are remarkable in our ability to adapt, nurture, and create. By embracing our uniqueness, setting boundaries, and practising self-compassion, we can transform the challenge of balance into an opportunity for profound growth and fulfilment. Let’s honour this journey— without judgment, without comparison, and with the understanding that every woman’s story is hers alone to write.

Practical Ways to Navigate the Challenge
While the emotional aspects of balance run deep, practical strategies can make the journey more manageable:
1 Define Your Priorities
Know what truly matters to you. Your priorities might not align with others, and that's okay. Focus on what brings meaning to your life.
2 Create a Support Network
Surround yourself with people who uplift and assist you. This includes family, friends, or even professional help like childcare or career mentors. As a mother, leaning on this network has been a lifesaver for me.
3 Be Present
Quality often matters more than quantity. When you're with your family, be fully present. When working, give it your best focus. Compartmentalising can reduce stress.
4 Set Boundaries
Protect your time and energy by saying no to tasks or events that don't align with your priorities. Boundaries are a form of selfcare.
5 Celebrate Small Wins
Recognise your efforts and celebrate progress, no matter how small. Each step you take is a testament to your strength and determination.

Handmade Christmas Decorations with Kids
Simple DIY Projects for Festive Fun
Toilet Paper Roll Christmas Characters
Materials Needed: Toilet paper rolls, paint (brown, red, white, black, orange), paintbrushes, googly eyes or marker, pom-poms, pipe cleaners, felt, glitter paper, cotton or faux fur, glue, scissors.
Design Ideas: Paint each roll in different colours for each character. For the reindeer, use brown paint and add a red pompom nose. Santa can be red with a cotton beard, and the snowman is white with earmuffs and a carrot nose.
Assemble & Decorate: Add details using pom-poms, pipe cleaners, felt scarves, and glitter paper for belts. Glue on googly eyes or use markers to create faces.
Finishing Touch: Display these cute characters on shelves, as part of a centrepiece, or even add a loop for hanging on the tree!

Painted Rock Snowflakes
Materials Needed: Smooth rocks, white acrylic paint, fine-tipped paintbrushes.
Painted rocks can be displayed indoors or outdoors, and they’re a perfect decoration for the holiday season.
Finding & Preparing Rocks: Look for smooth, clean rocks. Wash and let them dry completely before painting.
Painting Snowflakes: Using white paint and a fine brush, paint snowflake designs on each rock. Start with a central dot and draw lines radiating outward, adding smaller details like dots or short lines along each arm.
Sealing the Rocks: For rocks that will go outside, use a clear sealant to protect your designs from the elements.

Painted Pine Cones
Materials Needed: Pine cones, white paint, paintbrushes, glitter, glue
These make beautiful Christmas decorations that add a touch of nature to your decor.
Painting the Tips: Using a small brush, paint the tips of each pine cone with white paint to mimic snow. Add a light coat of glitter for extra sparkle.
Display Ideas: Hang them as ornaments, arrange them in bowls, or string them up as garlands.
Variation: You can also spray-paint the pine cones in metallic colours for a more sophisticated look.
Hand-printed Wrapping Paper
Materials Needed: Brown or white paper, paint, paintbrushes, markers, sponges, stencils.
You and your kids can create beautiful, one-of-a-kind wrapping paper using brown or white paper as a blank canvas. Here are a few ideas:
Handprints: Use the kids' hands (or feet) to make adorable handprint designs. For example, a green handprint can become a Christmas tree when decorated with tiny paint dots for ornaments. Sponges & Stencils: Use pre-made stencils or cut holiday shapes (stars, snowflakes, trees) in sponges. Dip the sponges in paint and stamp them onto the paper.
Paintbrush Splatters: For older kids, splattering paint can be a fun way to create a colourful design.
Instructions: Lay the paper flat on a protected surface, let the kids dip the stamps or their hands into paint, and make patterns across the paper. Let the paint dry before wrapping your gifts.

Felt Decorations
Materials Needed: Felt sheets in various colours, fabric glue, scissors, ribbons, buttons.
Felt is easy to work with, even for young kids, and felt decorations can be made in any shape!
Design Ideas: Simple shapes like Christmas trees, stars, and stockings are great if you do it for the first time. Cut out two identical shapes from the felt and use fabric glue to attach them around the edges, leaving a small opening.
Stuff & Decorate: Add a little stuffing to make them puffy, then glue or sew the rest shut. Decorate with buttons, sequins, or fabric markers.
Finishing Touch: Sew a ribbon loop at the top for easy hanging on the Christmas tree.
Salt Dough Christmas Decorations
Materials Needed: 1 cup salt, 2 cups flour, 1 cup warm water, rolling pin, cookie cutters, acrylic paint, ribbon.
Salt dough ornaments are easy to make and can be personalized by painting and decorating them after baking.
Making the Dough: Mix the salt, flour, and water until you get a firm dough. Roll it out on a floured surface.
Cutting Shapes: Use cookie cutters to cut out holiday shapes like stars, bells, and trees. Make a small hole at the top of each ornament for hanging.
Baking & Decorating: Bake at a low temperature (around 200°F) for 2-3 hours or until hard. Once cool, paint with acrylics and tie a ribbon through the top to hang.

Enjoy each moment and celebrate the joy of crafting together! Yes, we know it will be total chaos and a big mess, but the laughter will be for life.
We'd love to see your finished projects! Share them with us on social media using the hashtag #GreenGuideMagazineDIYChristmasFun. You might inspire other families to get creative this holiday season!
