roydon, the London Borough of Culture, has embarked on a spectacular journey of celebration, bringing communities together and shining a spotlight on the borough’s rich cultural tapestry. In April 2023, a year-long cultural extravaganza began - a grandiose display of creativity and inclusivity.
Dubbed "This is Croydon," the event is nothing short of a big, bold celebration of the diverse and vibrant communities that call this borough home. It is a testament to the borough's commitment to celebrating its unique culture and heritage, showcasing the very essence of what makes Croydon special.
"This is Croydon" is a stage for both established worldleading artists and budding local talents. From music to dance, spoken word to theatre, street art to exhibitions, fashion shows to interactive installations, and even workshops, debates, food festivals, and carnivals, the program is a dazzling array of cultural experiences that caters to every taste.
By the Community, For the Community
One of the standout features of "This is Croydon" is that it's a grassroots program created, directed, and presented by the
local people themselves. This means that it is authentically capturing the spirit and creativity of Croydon residents. The event is delving deep into the borough's unique identity, its various communities, its rich heritage, and the thriving culture that defines it.
"This is Croydon" places inclusivity and accessibility at its core. It ensures that every individual, regardless of background or abilities, can participate fully in the cultural experiences on offer. It's a warm invitation extended to every Croydonian, every Londoner, and people from around the world to come and be a part of this extraordinary celebration.
As the program unfolds, attendees are encouraged to explore new experiences, exchange ideas, and acquire new skills. "This is Croydon" is not just an event but an opportunity to enrich oneself, both culturally and intellectually.
"THIS IS CROYDON" is more than just a cultural festival; it's a testament to the vibrant spirit of Croydon's communities.

Croydon residents are in for a treat as Croydon Council teams up with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) to refurbish 32 council-owned tennis courts across 14 sites. This partnership aims to provide residents with high-quality tennis facilities and encourage more people to enjoy the sport.
Funding from the government and LTA Tennis Foundation, along with Croydon Council’s investment of £54,300, totalling over half a million pounds, will bring all the borough’s tennis courts up to a high standard. Upgrades will include a new gate-access system to enhance security and deter antisocial behaviour. Tennis enthusiasts can look forward to booking sessions in advance, with a small fee reinvested to maintain the courts.
Croydon Council is collaborating with Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) to offer free weekly tennis sessions for residents of all ages and skill levels, complete with equipment.
The refurbishments begin in October, with Addiscombe Recreation Ground, Ashburton Park, and Biggin Woods remaining accessible during the works.
This partnership with the LTA reflects Croydon’s commitment to promoting tennis as a healthy and accessible sport for all. Residents intereste
The council began a consultation last month to gather public feedback on its proposed new parking strategy. The strategy sets out the council's priorities in creating a more equitable system for all road users while optimizing road space throughout the borough. The overarching goal is to alleviate congestion, manage parking demand, and provide support to local businesses and residents.
Key features of the strategy include the introduction of virtual permits, which could enhance service efficiency, and the implementation of improved parking controls in areas with high on-street parking demand.
The in person drop in sessions are due to end on the 24th October* however residents will still have until 11.59pm, 31st October to provide feedback online via a questionnaire on the councils website.

Asilent revolution is taking place—one that is changing lives and making a positive impact on mental health awareness. Over 1,000 residents have already embarked on a transformative journey by participating in the council's accredited Mental Health First Aid training.
The initiative is more than just a course; it's a commitment to creating a community network that thrives on empathy and compassion. Participants learn not only to recognise and understand mental health issues but also how to support
Wthose in need in a non-judgmental manner. By breaking down barriers and encouraging open conversations, the training empowers individuals to play a pivotal role in the well-being of their neighbours, friends, and family members.
The core objective of Mental Health First Aid is to foster a community where everyone feels safe to share their feelings and experiences. It equips participants with the skills to guide individuals toward the help and support they may require, signposting them to appropriate resources when necessary.
What sets this initiative apart is that it doesn't end with the training. On completing the program, participants not only gain essential skills but also earn a valuable qualification. They become part of Croydon's Mental Health First Aid network, ensuring that they remain connected and receive ongoing support. Regular network meetings provide a platform for sharing experiences, gaining further knowledge, and staying engaged with like-minded individuals.

inding the best school or nursery in your area is a significant decision, as it can have a profound impact on your child's education and development. Here are steps you can follow to help you identify and choose:
Define Your Priorities: Consider factors such as location, curriculum, extracurricular activities, class sizes, teaching methods, and the school’s reputation.
Research Local Options: You can use search engines, education directories, or social media groups to find a list of educational institutions nearby and visit their websites. Look for information about their programs,

faculty, facilities, and mission statements.
Ask for Recommendations: Seek recommendations from friends, family members, and neighbours who have children attending schools or nurseries in the area.
Read Reviews and Ratings: While these can provide insights, keep in mind that opinions vary, so read multiple reviews.
Visit in Person: During your visit, observe the classrooms, talk to teachers and staff, and ask questions about their educational approach, safety measures, and admission procedures.
Consider Accreditation and Certification: Check if the school or nursery is accredited by a recognised educational body.
Apply Early: Once you’ve made your decision, be sure to complete the application process well in advance, as some schools have limited enrolment capacity and specific admission deadlines.
Ultimately, trust your instinct and your judgment about which school or nursery aligns best with your child’s needs and your family’s values. The best choice may not always be the most prestigious one but the one that best suits your child’s personality and learning style.

Creating your own Christmas decorations can be a fun and festive way to get into the holiday spirit. Here are some ideas for homemade Christmas decorations:

Cut intricate snowflake patterns out of white paper or coffee filters. Hang them on your windows or string them together to make a garland.
SALT DOUGH ORNAMENTS:
Mix 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, and 1 cup of water to create a dough. Roll it out, cut shapes with cookie cutters, and bake them. Once they cool, paint and decorate them.
CINNAMON STICK ORNAMENTS:
Glue cinnamon sticks together to create stars, hearts, or other shapes. Add ribbon for hanging.
MASON JAR SNOW GLOBES:
Fill a clean, dry mason jar with water, glycerine (to slow down the glitter's descent), and glitter. Secure a small figurine or decoration to the lid, then seal the jar.
Gather evergreen branches, pinecones, and berries. Attach them to a wire or foam wreath form and add a ribbon.
PINECONE ORNAMENTS:
Collect pinecones, paint them, and add glitter or small decorations.

Serve a traditional roast turkey for Christmas without the fuss. Use the sticky glaze you'd get on a ham to add flavour and golden colour to a turkey crown.
Ingredients
• 50g butter, softened
• 2kg turkey crown on the bone
• 1 tsp Chinese five spice or a pinch of ground cloves
For the glaze
• 4 tbsp honey
• 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
• 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
Method
STEP 1 Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Smear the butter all over the turkey crown and season all over with salt and half the five spice. Put in a roasting tin, skin-side up, and roast for 30 mins. While the crown is roasting, mix all the glaze ingredients in a bowl with the rest of the five spice.
STEP 2 Remove the crown from the oven and brush the skin generously with half the glaze. Continue to roast for another hour, glazing twice more, until cooked all the way through and the glaze is sticky and caramelised. Leave to rest for at least 20 mins before carving.
Prep: 5 mins Cook: 25 mins Serves 1
