AS the weather improves, the popular Croydon Music Heritage trail-led walks resume, both in Central Croydon and the Black History tour in the North of the Borough. Over 11,000 people publicly voted for locations linked to favourite artists and venues, past and present, representing Croydon’s diverse community from Classical to Punk.
The Central Trail guides you through the bustling heart of Central Croydon, commencing at The Queen’s Gardens, where you'll encounter the vibrant mural 'Croydon Symphony,' celebrating the artists who have shaped and been inspired by the area. The trail unveils historical gems, such as the
site where Jimi Hendrix famously entered through a back window for a performance.
On the Northern Trail, delve into the hometown of renowned artists like Stormzy and Nadia Rose. Explore landmarks such as The BRIT School and the former residence of Avril Coleridge Taylor.
The free Croydon Music Heritage trail app has a wealth of information on other sites across the borough and walks that can be self-directed. Once you have downloaded the app from any
app store, it will ping as you approach the ground-laid plaques and offer you interesting information.

The easy-to-use app also has lots of different interviews with key music artists for Croydon and is enjoyable to dip into at home as well. For example, listen to a reminiscence session about Beano’s much-missed music store, hear about the work of Croydon Composers Shri Sriram, or learn the true story behind Ralph McTell’s song about parts of Croydon.

As part of This Is Croydon, the Mayor of London’s London Borough of Culture, the Croydon's Music Heritage Trail Project is made possible thanks to generous funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Mayor of London with the support of the Museum of Croydon and Croydon Council.

HE Council recently agreed to consult on the review of the Local Plan, which outlines how the borough’s housing needs will be met while preserving its character, protecting our green spaces, and creating vibrant communities for people to live, work, and visit.
A new policy has been introduced to address the often negative impact of Houses in Multiple Occupations (HMOs) on neighbourhoods and the environment. The policy aims to minimise the cumulative effects of an over-concentration of HMOs in a particular area and deal with issues such as refuse storage, which I know has been an issue in the north of the borough.

The Council will be consulting on these revisions with residents and businesses in the summer.
Prior to my election, Croydon’s housing stock suffered from underinvestment and a lack of management, which resulted in residents suffering the consequences. Regina Road in South Norwood was left in such a bad state that it became a national scandal. We are now turning this around by delivering a new scheme for Regina Road residents, and we were recently awarded £54m in funding to build

around 233 council homes, with the first homes expected to be completed by summer 2026.
The Council has worked closely with Regina Road residents, and when balloted, an overwhelming majority voted ‘yes’ to the proposal to demolish and rebuild their homes.
I am committed to providing new affordable homes for Croydon residents, but not at the expense of quality standards. Both new and existing homes must be safe, welldesigned, well-cared for, and in keeping with the local area.

fly-tipping and follows consultation with residents and Councillors, drawing on data from the ‘Love Clean Streets’ app.
As part of my pledge to fix the ‘broken windows’ effect we will be targeting graffiti, fly tipping, and fly posting as well as tackling street licensing issues and illegal parking.

The Council has launched a second blitz clean-up campaign in Thornton Heath and West Thornton, part of my ongoing commitment to making our streets and district centres cleaner so that Croydon can be a place we can all can be proud to call home.

Finally, it was wonderful to open two new playgrounds at Canterbury Road Recreation Ground, in Broad Green and Whitehorse Road Recreation Ground in Selhurst; part of the Playground Investment Programme funded from capital and S106 funding. Designed in collaboration with local communities, they replace outdated and unsuitable equipment with facilities accessible for wheelchair use, including a trampoline. It is so important to offer well-equipped play spaces for our young people to thrive.

E have listed some upcoming meetings that the council will be holding within the next couple of months. The council continues to webcast all meetings and encourages residents to tune in where and when possible. Live webcasts and recordings of prior meetings can be watched at www.croydon.gov.uk/webcast.
Residents should also be aware that they can attend these meetings in the public gallery but there are limited spaces which are allocated on a first come first served basis. RIGHT in the centre of Croydon is a gem of a space, the Croydon Clocktower, next to the Town Hall on Katherine Street. This beautiful, accessible, awardwinning building hosts a library with many computers to borrow, a work support service and adult education service, a Happy Café with an art gallery, a small cinema with a bar, and a collection of Museum spaces. People of all ages find a welcome, refreshment and new interests here.

LIKE Mother's Day, Father's Day (16th June) is a chance to celebrate the incredible men shaping our lives. Dads wear many hats – mentors, cheerleaders, protectors, and sometimes even goofy best friends. Their unwavering support and firm guidance help us navigate life's big and small adventures.
From teaching us to ride a bike to offering invaluable advice during tough

times, fathers leave an indelible mark on who we become. Their strength and resilience inspire us, while their humour and playfulness bring joy to our lives.

So, this Father's Day, let's shower our dads – biological or otherwise – with appreciation. Let's thank them for the countless ways they enrich our lives and celebrate the heroes who stand by our side always.

Croydon, meet Jacob Mitchell, the man behind the viral persona MC Grammar! But MC Grammar isn’t just a catchy
name – it’s a mission to transform education through the power of rap.
Jacob’s journey to becoming a web sensation began in the classroom. Believe it or not, Jacob left school at 16 with just one GCSE. However, a passion for language reignited, leading him to a career in teaching. He has won multiple awards, including the prestigious National Teacher of the Year Award.
In 2014, Jacob had a spark of

inspiration while seeking to engage students in grammar. He knew kids are great at memorising lyrics, so he
began rapping about complex syllabus topics like subordinate conjunctions, becoming MC Grammar.
Jacob would often rap children’s books to his daughter and upload the videos to YouTube. It was in 2019 when he uploaded a video of himself rapping Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s book `The Gruffalo` to his daughter. The video went viral and had over ten million views! This viral success caught the attention of The Ellen Show in the US. As MC Grammar, Jacob was invited to perform his unique take on Dr. Seuss’s “Green Eggs and Ham,” captivating a whole new audience with his educational rhymes.
Since appearing on The Ellen Show, Jacob has created two shows for Sky Kids, Mc Grammar’s Wonder Raps’ and ‘Rap Tales’. He also recently headlined Young Voices’ 30 date nationwide arena tour.
More than just catchy beats, MC Grammar’s core message is one of empowerment. Having faced challenges in his own educational journey, Jacob uses his platform to encourage young people to chase their passions, regardless of perceived obstacles. In a world saturated with traditional teaching methods,

MC Grammar offers a refreshing perspective, proving that education can be both effective and entertaining.
So if your child struggles with grammar, times tables, reading, history…whatever, don’t despair! Turn on some MC Grammar and watch those complex rules transform into rhythmic rhymes that will have them learning without even realising it. After all, with MC Grammar, education truly becomes lit.

MANY people are aware of parkrun these days. Starting in 2004 at Bushy Park, it has grown steadily to over 2,300 locations in 22 countries and provides a free timed 5K run for anyone who wishes to participate. There has been a parkrun in South Norwood Country Park since July 2017 and the 300th event will take place this summer.
South Norwood is a relatively small parkrun. Neighbours Crystal Palace and Bromley have much bigger numbers of participants, but South
Norwood parkrun is small and perfectly formed. Normally, around 150 people complete the course, which takes in wild scrubland, wooded pathways, an open field, and one very gentle hill near the end.

parkrun (always with a small ‘p’) depends on volunteers to keep it going. South Norwood has a core team of 21 local residents bringing a wide range of skills and experience. Most are also keen runners and participate as often as they volunteer. In addition, the team is very strongly supported by more

CROYDON has a long and wonderful history of musicmaking over the last 100-plus years. Coming out of lockdown, The Year of Culture has re-inspired many local people of all ages to take an active part in many different kinds of music.
Singing or playing an instrument can be a wonderful way to meet local people and make new friendships, even if you are shy, as you are doing an involving activity instead of talking. Public Health funding has even supported singing in Croydon to reduce social isolation as there are very many health benefits to singing with others. Singing has been researched for its benefits with many health conditions (Parkinson's, Breathing) and in Croydon there are singing groups for mental health, dementia, and more. Creative Croydon supports developing music leaders and has established a number of local singing groups, such as Croydon Carers Choir (Carers Centre), now running independently. Creative Croydon also offers singing

and music in nature sessions through beautiful spaces like The Wilderness in Shirley and in partnership with Go Wild With Us in New Addington, and Parks Friends groups, sometimes with campfires alongside.
It is never too late to have fun playing an instrument or playing together with others in a band. Croydon is a big borough and there are local singing and music groups both formal and informal all across the borough, many of these affordable. Some are daytime and some are evening, plus there are one-off workshops. There are formal largescale classical (Bach, Philharmonic) and other genre choirs, a Men’s chorus, pop, gospel, blues and folk, through to raucous fun singalongs in pubs and karaoke sessions, all open to the public to take part in. Many faith groups have choirs and music lessons on offer too. And there are affordable music lessons of diverse styles for children and adults. Why not have a go? Adult Ed has Shanties classes this Summer.
Open access opportunities to sing and make music are many. Thornton Heath has CALAT singing classes at Strand House, plus music groups from Music Relief Foundation and the Salvation Army. Fairfield Halls have Croydon Voices, and Ruskin House has a Folk and a Blues Club. Purley (SING Purley), Norbury (the Hive, Welcome choirs), Selsdon (Soul Symphony Choir), Coulsdon (Singing Mamas).

Since the loss of council Arts Officers over a decade ago, the infrastructure connecting Croydon’s community groups with culture workers has also mostly disappeared, including Council community news webpages. Many small groups try to reach out but survival often takes precedence. Creative Croydon is collecting information on music in the borough - you can email us to find out where your nearest group is if you can’t locate it in other ways. Visit the Facebook group Croydon Music Development Network, or if not on Facebook, email CreativeCroydon@gmail.com
Many people hear about things only through print, posters and leaflets. True access and inclusion means paper. The Green Guide magazine is precious, reaching people at home. These beautiful publications are likely to be kept as sources of local information.

Turkey is a diversified, inclusive, and dynamic country, and its unique geographical location and rich history and culture attract tourists and scholars from all over the world. It is located at the intersection of Eurasia, and the cultural influences of Eastern Europe, Western Europe, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean can be found in Turkish culture.
Turkey’s natural scenery is equally breathtaking. Cappadocia’s peculiar landforms, fantastic hot air balloon tours and Fethiye’s beautiful beaches near the Mediterranean Sea are all attractions that tourists yearn for.

Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey. It was once the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire and Ottoman Empire, but now it is a cultural, commercial and tourist centre. The city’s landmark buildings and Byzantine city walls have witnessed the rise and fall of several eras.
Cappadocia, a magical land in central Turkey, is famous for its unique landform and charming landscape. Millions of years of wind and rain erosion have formed this wonder of the world: countless rock columns and cave buildings. In this mysterious land, you seem to be in a fairy tale world. In addition to the spectacular geological landscape, Cappadocia is also a place full of historical sites. Here, you can explore cave churches
and monasteries, enjoy murals and sculptures, and feel the charm of ancient Christian culture.
In the early morning in Cappadocia, a unique experience awaits you on an air balloon flight. Take a hot air balloon and overlook the spectacular scenery of Cappadocia from the air, enjoy the beautiful sights at sunrise and feel free and carefree while flying. This is an unforgettable experience and one of the activities you can’t miss when you come to Cappadocia.

Fethiye is a charming coastal city in southwest Turkey, located on the Aegean coast, surrounded by magnificent mountains and clear water. This city is famous for its beautiful natural landscape, long history, and rich cultural heritage.

Ihave always felt a little bit sad for people inclined to change their bodies before their wedding day. From restrictive diets to excessive exercise, it seems stressful and contrary to the point. I thought your wedding photos were supposed to represent you in your normal, healthy everyday body. Sure, you might be careful and skip the second slice of cake, but why avoid the first one? Your wedding day, look, and feel should represent you! Yes, the you in your very best light, but still – not an idealised version of you. Readers may not agree, and that’s absolutely fine. It’s your opinion, and your wedding. Who cares what anyone else thinks?
Let me give you some background.
Since the day I considered marriage seriously (around 6 years ago), I told myself that I wouldn’t fall into that “trap.” I refused to transform my body for one day and then unravel shortly after. I wanted to enjoy every moment of marriage prep, including loving my body in whichever dress I chose. Years later and in the thick of it, I will admit that as my wedding quickly approaches, I am certainly less flexible with my food and workout routine. But I am still me – chocolate on the regular, carbs a few times a day, loads of protein, fats, and veg. Baked goods, edible cookie dough, chips (as in fries), and wine when I want it.
I have been content, maintaining the expectation I set for myself years ago.
That is, until my last dress fitting. With my sleeves a bit tighter, and bodice slightly askew, I learned that I had gained more muscle. Normally in life, building muscle is a positive. It’s healthy. Progress. Not this time. Not when you’re being fit for a couture wedding dress. My seamstress reprimanded me, demanding I stop lifting weights to ensure my dress fits perfectly in 6 weeks. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not as if she was incorrect. She told me what I needed to hear, but she also left out what I needed
to believe: that I didn’t do anything wrong. I maintained my normal routine like I had promised myself so many years ago. But in this moment not only was she telling me I now had to break this promise by interrupting my routine to fit into the dress, but she led me to believe I was weak or unfocused as a result of working hard.
If anyone knows me, they can vouch for the fact that I throw myself into every endeavor to ensure that if I fail it’s not for lack of relentless work. But to hear someone tell me that as I was in fact giving my all and believing I was succeeding, but in reality failing…that was tough to swallow.
Ultimately, this demand may have been a blessing in disguise. My first week of just cardio + pilates/sculpt has been great. I don’t miss the heavy lifting. That’s the positive. However, that’s not the point. The point is that I still feel lingering hurt, defeat, and embarrassment. But more importantly, it’s a reminder to me, and by extension to you, that life isn’t consistent. In order to succeed (defined as you see fit), we must be flexible and offer ourselves grace over and over again. We have goals and images of ourselves down the line, but the reality is that we can’t control or expect everything. That’s a hard fact for me to accept, but I have to. We have to.
So I leave you here to remember that none of us have it all figured out. All we can do is our best and then our next best when that’s not enough.
We got this. That I am sure of. I believe in you. I believe in me.
Love always,

CROYDON, a vibrant hub in the heart of London, is undergoing a transformation. One of the individuals at the forefront of this change is Matthew Sims, the CEO of Croydon Business Improvement District (Bid), who sat down with Aysha Iqbal the host of the Startup Croydon podcast to share his vision for the future of this dynamic community.
In a candid conversation with Aysha Iqbal, Sims illuminated the multifaceted nature of Croydon's evolution, emphasising the need for safety, security, and revitalisation. With a keen understanding of the town's diverse needs, Sims highlighted the importance of collaboration between residents, businesses, and local authorities to drive positive change.
"Safety and security have always been our top priorities," Sims remarked, acknowledging the collective effort required to address issues such as shoplifting and antisocial behaviour. Through strategic partnerships with the Croydon Metropolitan Police and other agencies, Croydon Bid's initiatives, including the Street Rangers program, aim to enhance safety and provide visible support to businesses and residents alike.
Beyond safety, Sims underscored the significance of first impressions in
shaping perceptions of Croydon. He emphasised the need for cleanliness, beautification, and a curated approach to urban development, envisioning a town centre that exudes warmth and welcomes visitors with open arms.
But Sims's vision extends beyond mere aesthetics. He spoke passionately about the resilience and spirit of Croydon's people, acknowledging their diverse backgrounds and unwavering determination to see their community thrive. Sims sees Croydon as a "sleeping giant" poised for greatness, with its residents embodying the spirit of resilience and innovation.
Yet, Sims recognises the challenges ahead, from the impact of the pandemic to the need for strategic urban planning. He emphasised the importance of consultation and engagement with the community to chart a clear path forward, one that reflects the aspirations and values of Croydon's residents.
Looking ahead, Sims outlined his priorities for the coming year, enhancing safety measures, improving the town centre’s aesthetics, and fostering a sense of community pride. His message resonates with Croydon's diverse demographics, from longstanding residents to newcomers, business owners to visitors.

In conclusion, Matthew Sims's foresight embodies a vision of Croydon that is inclusive, vibrant, and forwardthinking. By harnessing the collective power of the community, Croydon is poised to realise its full potential as a beacon of opportunity and diversity in the heart of London.

Blend half a cucumber until smooth. Mix in two tablespoons of plain yoghurt and a teaspoon of honey. Apply the mixture to your face and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water for hydrated, glowing skin.

Mix one tablespoon of honey with a pinch of turmeric powder. Apply the mixture to your face and let it sit for 1520 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water.
Honey is a natural humectant, while turmeric has antiinflammatory and brightening properties, leaving your skin glowing and refreshed.

Brew a cup of green tea and let it cool to room temperature. Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to the tea. Transfer the mixture to a spray bottle and store it in the fridge. Use it as a refreshing toner after cleansing your face.
Green tea is rich in antioxidants, while peppermint oil provides a cooling sensation and helps reduce redness and inflammation.

Scoop out the gel from an aloe vera leaf. Blend it until smooth and transfer it into an ice cube tray. Freeze the gel cubes and use them to soothe sunburned or irritated skin. Apply the cubes directly to the affected areas for instant relief and hydration.

Mix equal parts of fresh citrus juice (lemon, lime, or orange) with sugar or salt. Gently massage the mixture onto damp skin in circular motions. Rinse off with warm water to reveal smooth, glowing skin.
Citrus fruits contain natural alpha hydroxy acids that exfoliate dead skin cells and brighten the complexion.

EVERY household generates waste, but how we manage it significantly impacts the environment. Here at Local Green Guide, we promote sustainable waste management practices. By working together, we can reduce our environmental footprint and create a cleaner, greener planet.

Throwing things away isn't just a matter of clearing space. Waste generation has a significant environmental cost. Landfill overflows, contaminating valuable land and releasing greenhouse gases as organic matter decomposes. Incineration, while reducing landfill space, generates air pollution. We need to find smarter ways to deal with waste.

Croydon Council offers a convenient kerbside collection for various recyclables, such as paper, cards, plastic bottles, tins, and glass jars. Check the Council website or your local calendar for collection schedules and specific guidelines.

The ideal solution is to move towards a "circular economy," where resources are kept in use for as long as possible. This minimises waste generation and promotes reuse and recycling. You can advocate for a circular economy by:
Support businesses:

This timeless mantra is the core of sustainable waste management. Here are some tips to help you reduce, reuse, and recycle more effectively:
Reduce:

Recycling Centres:
Choose companies committed to sustainable practices, using recycled materials, and offering refillable options.
Contact your local representatives: Voice your support for policies that encourage reuse and recycling, promote sustainable production, and create a circular economy for Croydon.

Avoid single-use items like plastic bags, disposable coffee cups, and excessive packaging. Opt for reusable alternatives, plan your shopping to avoid impulse buys, and mend clothes instead of discarding them.

For larger items like cardboard boxes, garden waste, or electrical appliances, visit Croydon's Recycling Centres. These facilities ensure proper disposal and recycling.
Composting kitchen scraps and garden waste offers a natural way to reduce landfill waste while creating nutrientrich compost for your garden. Croydon Council supports composting through various initiatives:
Sustainable waste management starts at home. By embracing the reduce, reuse, recycle philosophy, composting food scraps, and advocating for a circular economy, we can all contribute to a cleaner and greener world. Remember, every little bit counts!
Resources:

Give items a second life! Donate unwanted clothes and furniture, refill containers instead of buying new ones, and use reusable shopping bags and water bottles.
Croydon boasts a comprehensive recycling program. Learn what materials are accepted in your bins and separate them properly. This ensures efficient recycling and reduces contamination.

The Council is committed to making recycling easier. Here are some initiatives you can benefit from:

Community Composting Schemes: Several community gardens offer composting bins where residents can contribute food scraps.
Home Composting Kits:
The Council offers subsidised home composting bins, making it easy to start composting in your backyard.

The excitement is palpable as Paris prepares to host the 2024 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad. Mark your calendars for July 26th to August 11th, 2024, when the world's finest athletes will converge on the French capital for a global spectacle of sporting excellence.
Venues Spread Across France:

For the first time, men will compete with women in artistic swimming, making it a truly mixed-gender event. Additionally, a team acrobatic routine round will debut.
Boxing:
A new women's weight class has been added, while a men's class has been removed, achieving an equal number of categories for both genders.
Sailing:
Two high-octane kiteboarding events
have been added to the sailing program, offering a fresh perspective on the sport.
Shooting:
The mixed skeet team event replaces the mixed team trap event, keeping the focus on collaborative competition.
Track and Field:
The men's 50km race walk has been replaced by a more inclusive mixedgender marathon race walk relay. Additionally, a repechage round has been introduced for various track races, offering athletes a second chance to qualify for the finals.
