Winter can be a beautiful season, but the cold, dry air, combined with indoor heating, can wreak havoc on your skin, especially your face. If you're wondering how to maintain a healthy, glowing complexion when the temperatures drop, you're not alone.
The good news is that with the right skincare routine and a few lifestyle changes, you can protect your skin and keep it nourished during the harsh winter months.
During winter, the air outside is cold and dry, which can deplete your skin’s natural moisture. Indoor heating systems can
make matters worse by creating an even drier environment. The lack of humidity in the air reduces your skin’s ability to retain water, leaving it prone to dryness, redness, and irritation. For those with sensitive or dry skin, winter can lead to chapped skin, cracking, and a dull complexion. On the other hand, people with oily skin may also notice changes, such as breakouts or increased oil production as their skin compensates for the loss of moisture.
To keep your face healthy and glowing throughout winter, follow these practical tips to protect, hydrate, and nourish your skin.
SWITCH TO A HYDRATING CLEANSER
In winter, your regular cleanser might be too harsh. Many cleansers, especially those containing sulphates, can strip your skin of its natural oils, making it feel tight and dry. Instead, opt for a creamy or oil-based cleanser that is hydrating and gentle on the skin. Look for products that are fragrancefree and designed for dry or sensitive skin types.
EXFOLIATE GENTLY (BUT DON’T OVERDO IT)
Exfoliation is important for removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover, but over-exfoliating can make your skin even drier. During the winter, limit exfoliation to once or twice a week and use a gentle scrub or exfoliating product with mild acids like lactic or glycolic acid. Be cautious not to scrub too hard or use abrasive physical exfoliators, as these can irritate the skin.
HYDRATE WITH A RICH MOISTURISER
Your skin’s moisture barrier is crucial in winter, so make sure to keep it well-
moisturised. A thick, nourishing moisturiser will lock in hydration and prevent moisture loss. Look for creams containing humectants like hyaluronic acid, which attracts moisture to the skin, and occlusives like shea butter or ceramides, which help form a protective layer. Apply your moisturiser right after cleansing when your skin is still slightly damp to lock in extra moisture.
ADD A HYDRATING SERUM
Consider incorporating a hydrating serum or facial oil into your winter skincare routine. Serums that contain hyaluronic acid or glycerine help to attract moisture and hydrate the skin at a deeper level. If your skin is extremely dry, a facial oil can provide an extra layer of protection, sealing in moisture and preventing water loss. Be sure to choose a non-comedogenic oil to avoid clogging your pores.
DON’T SKIP SUNSCREEN
Winter doesn’t mean you can skip sunscreen. UV rays can damage your skin year-round, even when it's cloudy or snowy. In fact, snow can reflect UV rays, making the sun's effects even stronger. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin, including your face, neck, and hands, every day, even when indoors or on cloudy days.
USE A HUMIDIFIER
Indoor heating can dry out the air and strip moisture from your skin. A humidifier can add moisture back into the air, helping to prevent your skin from becoming overly dry. This is particularly helpful at night when you’re sleeping, as it can create a more hydrated environment for your skin.
PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE ELEMENTS
Winter winds can cause redness, irritation, and dryness, especially on the more vulnerable skin on your face. Always protect your skin with a scarf or face mask when heading outdoors, especially if it’s windy. Make sure to cover areas like your cheeks, nose, and chin, which are particularly exposed to the elements.
Avoid using products with strong alcohols or fragrances during the winter, as they can irritate and dry out your skin. Stick to gentle, fragrance-free formulations that are designed to hydrate and soothe the skin. Be mindful of acne treatments too—some acne products, such as those containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, can dry out the skin, making winter dryness worse.
Staying hydrated from the inside out is just as important as using topical skincare products. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help keep your skin hydrated. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds, can also help improve skin hydration. In addition, antioxidants like vitamin C (found in citrus fruits and leafy greens) can protect the skin from damage caused by cold weather.
Focus on moisturising, gentle cleansing, and protecting your skin from the elements. Don’t forget to hydrate and use sunscreen year-round. By following these tips, you can help ensure your skin stays healthy, nourished, and glowing all winter long.

Businesses in Hounslow are being invited to take part in the Cleaner Greener Hounslow campaign, an initiative aimed at keeping local high streets and town centres free of litter and looking their best. In return for their participation, businesses will receive free publicity to highlight their efforts and community spirit.
The campaign, spearheaded by the local council, recognises the challenges that businesses face, particularly during these demanding times. By encouraging businesses to sign up, the council hopes to support local enterprises and inspire residents to visit their neighbourhood shops and town centres.
The concept behind the campaign is straightforward. Participating businesses are encouraged to assist in keeping their local high streets clean by picking up litter. In exchange, the council will promote their involvement, providing valuable publicity
and showcasing their commitment to the local community.
A clean and tidy high street is not just beneficial for the environment but also for business, as customers are naturally drawn to pleasant and well-maintained areas. Beyond helping to improve the local environment, businesses will also gain visibility as active contributors to the campaign.
All businesses across Hounslow are welcome to join. Together, the business community and the council aim to create
a positive impact, making local areas more appealing and encouraging residents to shop locally.
Businesses interested in participating can easily sign up by completing a short online form. This collective effort promises to make a tangible difference in maintaining the vibrancy of Hounslow’s high streets and town centres.
For more information, visit the campaign’s website or contact the local council to join the movement towards a Cleaner, Greener Hounslow.
Christmas is a time when we often create more waste, from wrapping paper and packaging to leftover food. This year, Hounslow Council is encouraging everyone to support a circular economy by using less, and reusing, repairing, and recycling more. It’s a great way to help the planet and save money too.
Here are some top tips for making your Christmas greener:
Buy Used
Instead of purchasing new items, consider second-hand gifts from charity shops, antique stores, or websites like eBay, Vinted, or Facebook Marketplace. This reduces your carbon footprint and can save you money.
Shop Locally
Reduce your emissions by shopping at local businesses, farmer’s markets, and familyowned stores. Walking to local shops can also be a great way to find unique gifts.
Plan your meals carefully and buy only what you need. Use leftovers creatively, or donate surplus food to a local food bank or share it through apps like Surplus to Supper or OLIO. For any unavoidable food waste, make sure to recycle it in your food waste bin.
After receiving new toys, clothes, or other items this Christmas, think about donating, selling, or recycling any unwanted or older items to prevent waste.
Choose Recyclable Wrapping Paper and Cards
Avoid shiny, glittery, or foil materials that can’t be recycled. Wrapping paper that stays scrunched when you ball it up can usually go in the recycling—just remember to remove sticky tape, labels, and decorations first.
Swap out your incandescent tree lights for LEDs. If every UK household made this change, we could save over £11 million and reduce CO2 emissions by 29,000 tonnes over the 12 days of Christmas! LEDs use up to 80% less energy, making them both eco-friendly and cost-effective.
Recycle More
Always aim to rethink, reduce, reuse, and recycle. The council’s recycling services collect items like small electricals, textiles, coffee pods, and bulky waste. By making these small changes, you can enjoy a more sustainable and planetfriendly Christmas this year!
Hounslow Council have relaunched their Hounslow Community Energy Fund (HCEF) for 2025/26, with £150,000 available to support community projects that will cut carbon and save energy.
Community groups in Hounslow are invited to apply for the third round of the Council’s £150,000 Community Energy Fund, designed to help reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency.
All constituted community groups can apply for grants of up to £40,000 to implement energy-saving measures in their buildings. Eligible projects include fabric upgrades, renewable energy installations, and heating system improvements. By enabling energy
savings and cutting carbon emissions, the fund allows community groups to reinvest the financial savings into their essential services and community-led initiatives.
The HCEF is financed through Hounslow’s Carbon Offset Fund and supports the borough’s commitment to achieving net zero. In 2023, the second funding round saw over £140,000 allocated to five successful projects, enhancing energy efficiency across a range of community spaces. These included churches, a boathouse, and an ecology centre. Supported initiatives ranged from fabric retrofits, which improve a building’s insulation and reduce energy usage, to the installation of solar panels and LED lighting upgrades.
Scanning the QR code will take you to the Council’s page to find out more information about the fund, including the eligibility criteria and how to apply.
This funding allows local groups to make tangible contributions to sustainability while improving their facilities’ functionality and environmental performance
Applications are now open, and interested groups are encouraged to take this opportunity to join Hounslow on its path to a greener future.
How to apply
Community groups have until Sunday, 2 March 2025 at 11:59pm to submit their ideas for cutting carbon and saving energy and will find out the decision in the spring. Hounslow’s Community Energy Fund could help make it a reality.

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Heat 2 tbsp of the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and cook the onions over a low heat for 20-25 mins or until well softened and lightly browned. Add the vinegar and cranberry sauce, and simmer for 5-10 mins more, stirring until almost all the liquid has disappeared. Leave to cool.
Step 2
Meanwhile, put the sweet potatoes in a bowl and toss with the remaining oil, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp pepper and the chilli flakes. Arrange on a baking tray and cook for 20 mins, turning halfway, until softened and lightly browned. Leave to cool.
Step 3
Reduce oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line two large baking trays with baking parchment and unroll the pastry sheets on top – trimming the edges neatly at this point will encourage a good rise. Leaving a 2cm gap around the edge, spread the onions over the pastry, then top with the sweet potatoes and goat’s cheese. Brush the beaten egg around the border of the pastry and bake in the oven for 35-40 mins or until the pastry is golden and crisp, swapping the shelves after 20 mins.
Step 4
Scatter over the thyme, then cut each tart into quarters (or smaller pieces if serving more). Serve with a large leafy salad.
• 225g frozen raw peeled king prawns, defrosted
• 100ml buttermilk (if you can’t find buttermilk, mix the same amount of yogurt with the juice of ½ lemon)
• ½ iceberg lettuce, shredded
For the Cajun seasoning
• 3 tbsp smoked paprika
• ½ tbsp ground black pepper
• ½ tbsp ground white pepper
• 1½ tbsp garlic powder
• 1½ tbsp onion powder
• 2 tsp dried oregano
• 1 tsp dried thyme
• 1-2 tsp cayenne pepper (to taste)
Step 1
• 1 ripe avocado, stoned, halved, peeled and thinly sliced crosswise
• vegetable oil, for frying
• finely chopped chives, to garnish
For the sauce
• 4 tbsp mayonnaise
• 4 tbsp tomato ketchup
• 3 tsp capers, drained and finely chopped
• 30g gherkins, finely chopped
For the coating
• 100g plain flour
• 100g fine cornmeal or polenta
• 2 tsp baking powder
First, combine all the ingredients for the Cajun seasoning. Mix the prawns with the buttermilk and 3 tbsp of the Cajun seasoning in a large bowl, then set aside.
Step 2
To make the sauce, combine all the ingredients in a small bowl. Season and set aside. Combine all the ingredients for the coating in a separate bowl with the remaining Cajun seasoning and a pinch of salt, then set aside.
Step 3
Take one prawn at a time, gently shake off any excess buttermilk mixture, then dip into the coating using a fork, turning to ensure it is fully covered before transferring to a plate. Leave to rest for 15 mins.
Step 4
Fill each glass almost to the top with lettuce, then spoon 2 tbsp of the sauce into each. Divide the avocado slices between four martini glasses, arranging them in a fan against the rim of each glass, so the tops are sticking up over the rims.
Step 5
Heat a 10cm depth of oil in a shallow saucepan or deep-fat fryer until it reaches 180C, or when a cube of bread dropped into the oil browns within 20 seconds. Fry the coated prawns in batches of 10 for 4-5 mins per batch until golden and crisp. Transfer to a plate lined with kitchen paper using a slotted spoon and leave to drain. Repeat until all the prawns are cooked, then season with salt and divide between the glasses. Sprinkle over the chives.
Sprouts with Pistachios & Pomegranate
INGREDIENTS
• 3 tbsp olive oil
• 500g brussels sprouts, halved
• 50g pistachios, roughly chopped
• 100g pomegranate seeds pomegranate molasses, to drizzle (optional)
METHOD
Step 1
Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat. Put the brussels sprouts in the pan, cut-side down, and leave them to fry for 10-15 mins, tossing occasionally. If they’re just lightly brown, carry on cooking for a further 5 mins until blistered.
Step 2
Scatter over the pistachios and stir-fry until toasted. Remove from the heat and stir through the pomegranate seeds. Season with salt and tip into a serving dish. Drizzle with a little pomegranate molasses, if you like.
• 4 carrots (about 450g), cut into batons
• 4 beetroots (about 450g), peeled and cut into thin wedges
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 150g quinoa and bulgur wheat mix
• 2 tbsp honey
• 2 lemons, zested and juiced
• 1 orange, zested and juiced
• 1 tsp ground cumin
• 1 tsp ground coriander
• 75g hazelnuts, roughly chopped
• 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
• small bunch of mint leaves, picked and chopped
• small bunch of parsley, chopped
• small bunch of dill, chopped
• 200g feta
METHOD
Step 1
Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas
6. Tip the carrots and beetroot wedges into a roasting tin, drizzle with the olive oil and season. Toss to coat and roast for 25 mins.
Step 2
Meanwhile, cook the quinoa and bulgur wheat mixture in a pan of boiling salted water following pack instructions. Drain in a sieve, then set aside to cool slightly.
Step 3
Combine the honey, lemon zest, orange zest and juice, the cumin and coriander. Remove the tin from the oven and pour the honey mixture over the veg. Stir, then scatter over the hazelnuts and return to the oven for another 10 mins.
Step 4
Tip the cooked grains onto a serving platter. Squeeze over the lemon juice and drizzle with the extra virgin olive oil. Top with most of the herbs and the feta, season well, and toss together. Pile the roasted veg and hazelnuts on top, pouring over any roasting juices from the tin. Scatter with the remaining herbs just before serving. Best served warm or at room temperature.
Spinach, Beetroot & Goat’s Cheese
• 400g spinach
• 5 eggs, separated
• 3 tbsp self-raising flour
• 1 tbsp melted butter
• 1 tbsp milk
• 2 peeled and cooked beetroots (around 200g), roughly chopped
• 250g soft goat's cheese
• 3 tbsp chopped dill, tarragon or chives plus extra to serve
METHOD
Step 1
Heat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5 and line a Swiss roll tin (ours was 23 x 32cm) with baking parchment. Tip the spinach into a large heatproof bowl with 1 tsp water and wilt in the microwave for a total of 2 mins, checking it after each 30-second burst. Or, wilt in a pan with 1 tbsp water over a medium heat. Leave the spinach to cool, then squeeze out as much excess liquid as possible by tipping into a clean tea towel and wringing it out, or press against a colander using the back of a large spoon.
Step 2
Transfer the spinach to a food processor with the egg yolks, flour, melted butter, milk and a good pinch each of salt and pepper. Blitz until the spinach is finely chopped and the ingredients are well mixed. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Carefully fold the whipped egg whites into the spinach mixture until combined. Tip into the prepared tin and gently spread out into an even layer. Bake for 12-15 mins until puffed up slightly and firm to the touch.
Step 3
Meanwhile, wash out the food processor and tip in the beetroots, goat’s cheese and herbs. Season well and blitz to a purée, then spoon 3 tbsp of the filling into a piping bag and set aside. Spoon the remainder of the filling into a bowl, then both the bowl and piping bag in the fridge until needed, to firm up a little.
Step 4
Lay a sheet of baking parchment on a work surface and turn the spinach roulade out onto it. Carefully peel off the original baking parchment, then roll up into a tight spiral from one of the short ends, using the piece of parchment below to help you. Leave the roulade, still rolled up, to cool for 10 mins, then carefully unroll and spread over the beetroot filling from the bowl. Roll up again and transfer to a serving board or plate. Pipe blobs of the filling over the roulade using the piping bag, then scatter with extra herbs. Slice to serve.

It is not a coincidence that Hyrox is arguably the fastest-growing and most popular fitness race. First, you don’t need to have experience with other sports. You don’t need to know how to deadlift, clean, snatch, handstand walk, or swim. This means everyone can do it; however, this doesn’t mean you can just jump into a race without training like for a 5k-10k running event. Hyrox consists of stations with fundamental movement patterns, like the squat, lunge, push, pull and carry. It is not who will lift the heaviest weight; the weight is relatively low compared to the average body weight for males and
As I said, Hyrox is for everyone, but every person should understand their level of fitness. For example, beginners may need to train to increase endurance, mobility and strength to ensure they complete the race without injuries. Someone with experience in a few races may
females. It is straightforward, the quickest person/team wins. Also, if you have ever been to another fitness competition to support friends or just out of curiosity and you are not a gym fanatic, you might have felt intimidated by the looks of most of the competitors. At Hyrox, you can see people aged 16-17 to 70. Most of the people who come to watch a partner or friend end up with ticket for next event. Another advantage for people with a running background or who love running is that the event is indoors. Also, there is an event every week somewhere in the world.
want to do a personal best; they know where their strengths and weaknesses are. And advanced, they may target podium in their age group or even elite. All three levels should seek a fitness professional, ideally someone with experience in endurance sports.
Beginners need to make sure that they can sustain jogging for up to 100-120 minutes.
Experienced “hyroxers” looking for PBs will probably need to work on their running speed and ability to recover. Increasing their threshold for the submaximal work will decrease their time to complete the race.
People who are looking for a podium must work with a coach because every detail matters.
So, if you are interested in doing your first Hyrox or getting PB on your next race, find a local Hyrox gym or coach and commit to training.
We meet with Drita Nunes, a dynamic force of energy, passion, and positivity, whose dedication to fitness, and community has shaped her life for over a decade. From her first Tough Mudder event 14 years ago to her current intense training routines, Drita’s journey is as
Welcome to Driven Lives , a space where we dive into the hearts and minds of extraordinary individuals to uncover what motivates them. inspiring as it is relentless. Through running, boot camps, and charity events, she’s found a way to blend her love for movement, her desire to help others, and her gift for building friendships. Today, she shares with us how she keeps her body strong, her mind sharp, and her heart full.
Q: Tell us about how your fitness journey began.
Drita: My fitness journey started over 14 years ago. It all began with a boot camp at the gym, where I learned to train with others and socialise. My first event was a Tough Mudder, and I haven’t stopped since. At one point, I was participating in events twice a month! From half marathons and 10Ks to Spartans and charity runs, fitness became a way of life for me.
Q: It’s clear that charity holds a special place in your heart. Can you share more about that?
Drita: A lot of my events are charity-driven. My first charity run was a 10K in London, inspired by a family I worked with who tragically lost a one-month-old child. The mother passed her race ticket to me, and running that event was deeply emotional. I’ve also supported causes like Breast Cancer Research, often raising more than my target. These events are more than just physical challenges—they’re opportunities to honour stories, raise awareness, and make a difference.
Q: What keeps you motivated to train and participate in so many events?
Drita: There’s no single reason—I’m motivated by everything! Exercise is my remedy. It keeps me physically healthy, mentally strong, and socially connected. Movement has always been a part of who I
am. I thrive on staying active, whether it’s through structured training or just keeping up with my work as a nanny.
Q: Speaking of staying active, what does your current training routine look like?
Drita: I’m very consistent. I train at F45 six times a week and do a boot camp session outdoors once a week for the fresh air and social interaction. Over the last three years, I’ve been training for Hyrox events, which adds another layer of variety and challenge to my routine. Despite the intensity, I’ve
learned to pace myself to avoid injuries while still pushing my limits.
Q: How do you recover from such an intense routine?
Drita: Recovery for me is both physical and mental. Physically, I feel muscle soreness, especially 24 hours after training, but it’s manageable. Mentally, happiness is my best recovery tool. Even when I’ve pushed myself hard, the joy and satisfaction I get from training and being around others seem to recharge me instantly. I don’t believe in long rest periods—I stay active even on rest days, whether it’s walking or socialising.
Q: What role does nutrition play in your lifestyle?
Drita: I focus on proteins, good fats, and healthy carbs like sweet potatoes, brown rice, lentils, and beans. I avoid white pasta
and rice—they’ve never been my thing, even when I was younger! While I enjoy my food, I don’t stress over counting calories or measuring portions.
Q: How do you balance training, work, and your personal life?
Drita: It’s all about making time for what matters. My work as a nanny is very active, and I often clock over 20,000 steps daily just from my job and walking the family dog. Socialising is another priority—I never say no to a coffee or a walk with friends. Sometimes people just need company or a little motivation, and I’m always happy to be there for them.
Q: Who motivates you to keep going?
Drita: Myself, 100%. I’ve learned to listen to my body and mind. When I need rest, I take it. I know what works for me.
in those interactions. We live in challenging times, and I think it’s more important than ever to be there for one another. Socialising is as much a part of my happiness as training is.
Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own fitness journey?
Drita: Start with what you love. Fitness is about finding what makes you happy, whether it’s running, walking or lifting weights. Most importantly, do it for yourself, not for anyone else.
Q: What’s your ultimate goal with this lifestyle?
Drita: It’s not about chasing a six-pack or showing off—it’s about staying strong, healthy, and happy. I want to do as much as I can for as long as I can. I don’t need to be rich or have a perfect life to feel fulfilled. I’m blessed with good health, wonderful people around me, and the ability to help others. That’s enough for me.
Q: You seem to have such a vibrant social life. How does that fit into everything?
Drita: I love connecting with people. Whether it’s training, social events, or just meeting someone new, I find so much joy

The latest viral sensation sweeping across social media platforms, particularly TikTok, is the "Very Demure, Very Mindful" trend. This phenomenon, which began as a satirical take on workplace etiquette, has evolved into a versatile meme that users are adapting to various aspects of daily life.
The trend was sparked by beauty influencer Jools Lebron, who shared a 40-second TikTok video showcasing a polished makeup look while describing herself as "very demure, very mindful." In her video, Lebron humorously emphasised the importance of presenting oneself appropriately in professional settings.
At its heart, the trend capitalised on irony. By exaggerating the pursuit of mindfulness, it encouraged audiences to laugh at their own attempts to appear “puttogether.” However, the humour also opened the door to a deeper conversation: What does
on self-compassion within wellness circles. By laughing at the absurdity of striving for perfection, individuals are encouraged to embrace their flaws and focus on what truly matters: being present and kind to themselves.
The trend’s cultural impact extends beyond social media. It has inspired workshops, art exhibitions, and even merchandise that celebrate the juxtaposition of mindfulness and humour. For example, meditation classes now incorporate comedic storytelling to help participants release tension, while mindfulness journals are being sold with prompts like, "What’s one embarrassing thing you’ve done recently, and why does it make you human?"
Moreover, it has challenged wellness industries to rethink their messaging. Instead of promoting unattainable ideals, there’s a shift toward celebrating mindfulness as a practice rooted in authenticity and individuality.
Like most trends, "Very Demure, Very Mindful" may eventually fade from the spotlight. However, its core message—that mindfulness doesn’t have to be perfect, and humour can be a powerful tool for self-reflection—will likely endure.
As society continues to navigate the complexities of modern life, this movement serves as a reminder that sometimes, the best way to be “very mindful” is to laugh at ourselves, accept our imperfections, and simply try again tomorrow.
Whether you find yourself spilling tea on your yoga mat or missing a moment of calm because your mind wandered to your grocery list, remember: You’re doing fine. And if nothing else, at least you’re “Very Demure, Very Mindful”—or close enough.
mindfulness actually mean in a world where everything feels curated for public consumption?
For many, the answer has been to reclaim mindfulness as a personal, imperfect journey rather than a performance. The hashtag #VeryDemureVeryMindful now features posts ranging from genuinely reflective moments—like journaling about a tough day—to light-hearted admissions of failure, such as spilling coffee during a morning meditation.
One of the reasons this trend has gained traction is its ability to balance humour with sincerity. Traditional portrayals of mindfulness often focus on achieving an ideal state of calm and composure, which can feel unattainable or even alienating. By contrast, the "Very Demure, Very Mindful" movement acknowledges that life is messy—and that’s okay.
This comedic approach aligns with the growing emphasis
Balancing the roles of motherhood, career, and social life is one of the most significant challenges women face. It's not just about juggling tasks but about navigating each role's emotional, societal, and personal dimensions. For many women, especially us mothers, these competing demands can feel like a tightrope—trying to give enough to each role without losing ourselves in the process. The key lies in self-awareness, self-compassion, and embracing individuality. Let's delve into the heart of this challenge and how women can navigate it while finding fulfilment.
In today's world, judgment is everywhere. A working mother might be labelled "too ambitious," while a stay-at-home mom might be deemed "unmotivated." Social media compounds this issue, projecting unrealistic images of women who effortlessly balance everything. But behind those perfect portrayals is the truth: every woman's circumstances, strengths, and struggles are unique.
For many mothers, this judgment can cut deeply. We often question if we're doing enough for our children, if our career choices are right, or if we're spending enough time nurturing friendships. But judgment, whether from society or ourselves, creates unnecessary guilt. Women often internalise these criticisms, questioning their worth or choices.
As a mother, I've learned there's no universal definition of "doing it right." Embracing a no-judgment philosophy is transformative. It means letting go of societal pressures and allowing yourself to live in alignment with your own values, not someone else's standards. Judgmentfree living fosters self-acceptance, enabling women to embrace the beauty of their unique journeys.
One of the deepest truths about balancing life is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The roles of mother, professional, and friend carry different weights for every woman. What fulfils one person might overwhelm another. Some women thrive in
By D.M.
a fast-paced career while raising children and maintaining a vibrant social life. Others find joy in dedicating themselves more fully to their family or personal passions. These differences are not shortcomings— they're reflections of individuality.
Recognising this allows women to shed the burden of comparison. Instead of asking, "Am I doing as much as she is?" ask, "Am I doing what's right for me and my loved ones?"
This approach also opens the door to selfdiscovery. What are your core values? What truly brings you joy and fulfilment? These answers evolve over time, shaped by life's changes. Parenthood might deepen your appreciation for home life, or a fulfilling career might inspire you to carve out more family moments. The beauty lies in tailoring your balance to match your reality.
The concept of balance often feels like an impossible ideal. Society paints a picture of women who excel in every role, always giving 100%—a myth that fuels stress
and burnout. Proper balance isn't about achieving perfection in every aspect of life; it's about finding harmony over time. For mothers, it means recognising that priorities shift. There will be seasons when your career demands more attention, and others when family takes precedence. There will be weeks when you prioritise social connections and times when self-care requires stepping back. Balance isn't a static state but an ongoing process of adjustment. It's also about setting realistic expectations. Be honest with yourself about what you can accomplish and allow room for imperfection. I've learned that saying "no" to one thing often means saying "yes" to something more important for myself and my family.
Balancing these roles is more than just time management—it's an emotional journey. Guilt is a frequent companion for many women, especially mothers. I've felt the guilt of missing milestones at home due to work or scaling back on my career to focus on family. These feelings are natural, but they shouldn't define us.
At its core, balance is about self-respect. It's about understanding our limits and treating ourselves with the kindness we extend to others. It's about valuing our contributions, whether they're at home, at work, or in our community. By practising self-compassion, we build emotional resilience, which is vital for navigating life's complexities.
The journey of balancing motherhood, career, and social life is ultimately about growth. It’s about discovering who you are, what you value, and how you want to live. It’s about learning to adapt to life’s ebbs and flows while staying true to yourself. We mothers are remarkable in our ability to adapt, nurture, and create. By embracing our uniqueness, setting boundaries, and practising self-compassion, we can transform the challenge of balance into an opportunity for profound growth and fulfilment. Let’s honour this journey— without judgment, without comparison, and with the understanding that every woman’s story is hers alone to write.
While the emotional aspects of balance run deep, practical strategies can make the journey more manageable:
1 Define Your Priorities
Know what truly matters to you. Your priorities might not align with others, and that's okay. Focus on what brings meaning to your life.
2 Create a Support Network
Surround yourself with people who uplift and assist you. This includes family, friends, or even professional help like childcare or career mentors. As a mother, leaning on this network has been a lifesaver for me.
3 Be Present
Quality often matters more than quantity. When you're with your family, be fully present. When working, give it your best focus. Compartmentalising can reduce stress.
4 Set Boundaries
Protect your time and energy by saying no to tasks or events that don't align with your priorities. Boundaries are a form of selfcare.
5 Celebrate Small Wins
Recognise your efforts and celebrate progress, no matter how small. Each step you take is a testament to your strength and determination.
Christmas is often seen as a time of joy and connection, but for many, it also brings hidden challenges—loneliness, pressure, and the weight of expectations.
The endless lists of gifts, meals, and gatherings can blur the true essence of the season, leaving us overwhelmed instead of uplifted. Instead of striving for perfection, why not embrace imperfection? Focus on the moments that truly matter— shared laughter, quiet pauses, or simply being present. These small, meaningful moments can bring the connection and joy we often chase in a more soulful way.
If you feel overwhelmed, give yourself permission to ask for help. Sharing tasks, whether it’s cooking or planning, can lighten the load and foster connection rather than signalling weakness. Carve out moments for stillness—a short pause can bring a sense of calm that
steadies you amidst this holiday rush.
Christmas often equates love with material gifts, but true generosity doesn’t need to come with financial strain. Your time, care, and presence are the most cherished offerings. A handwritten note, a shared walk, or a homemade treat often carries more meaning than anything bought. And remember that setting a budget isn’t a restriction but an act of self-care. Thoughtful, intentional choices that prioritise connection over consumption can make the season feel richer. Memories created through baking cookies, crafting decorations, or singing carols together linger far longer than store-bought trinkets.
Loneliness during the holidays can feel amplified by images of connection, but you’re not alone. Small steps, such as making a phone call, joining a community group, or volunteering your time, can weave meaningful threads of connection. Find comfort in simple rituals—savouring tea, journaling, or lighting a candle to ground yourself and bring moments of peace amidst the season's busyness.
Not everyone feels joy during Christmas. Grief, anxiety, or simply a lack of cheer deserve space too. Let yourself feel what you need to feel. Seek solace in comforting rituals or trusted connections, and don’t hesitate to ask for support if the weight feels too heavy.
This Christmas, perhaps the greatest gift we can offer is a simple one: kindness. To others, yes—but also to ourselves. By acknowledging our limits, nurturing our well-being, and embracing
the imperfections of life, we create space for genuine joy.
The true spirit of Christmas isn’t found in its busyness but in its stillness. In quiet moments of connection. In warmth shared. In the courage to let go of what doesn’t serve us and to embrace what does.
May this season be one of tenderness, care, and renewal—a reminder that even amidst the challenges, the light of hope and love shines ever bright.

At Strand on the Green Infant and Nursery School, we place children at the heart of what we do, cherishing and inspiring them all with an active, engaging, and stimulating curriculum. Our highly experienced and committed staff work hard, in partnership with parents, to ensure every child can experience success. We are proud to be an inclusive school that has the
highest expectations for behaviour and learning right from the start.
As an Infant school, we are able to capitalise on our expertise in teaching very young children, using pedagogy that suits our young learners. Whilst our focus is on the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic, this is taught alongside a very creative and broad, active curriculum. Children learn how to work and play together, be healthy, use their imaginations and be creative; all of which develop a love of learning, curiosity, and fun. When the time comes, it is then a smooth and easy transfer to our linked Junior school next door.
We are uniquely situated, tucked away in Strand on the Green within a stone’s throw of the River Thames. Our children love to learn inside and out using our pond, exercise area, sensory garden and our Forest School areas.
If you have visited our school already, you will know that children, staff, parents and governors together create a warm, vibrant and welcoming community that is second to none. If you haven’t visited us yet, book a place on one of our regular tours (via the school office) and come and meet us.

Choosing the right school or nursery for your child is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a parent. Is it the right environment that supports their growth? Does it aligns with your educational priorities? Does the school or nursery provide a strong foundation for our child’s future? So many questions that a parent wants the answer to.
Start by outlining your educational goals and preferences. Think about the following factors:
• Location: How far are you willing to travel daily?
• Curriculum: Are you looking for a specific type of curriculum, such as Montessori, or a more traditional approach?
• Extracurricular Activities: Does your child have particular interests like sports, arts, or music?
• Class Sizes and Teacher-to-Student Ratio: Smaller classes often allow for more individualised attention.
• Teaching Methods: Consider whether
you prefer more structured or flexible, student-led learning.
• Reputation: Look into each school's standing in the community.
By clarifying what matters most, you can narrow down the list of potential schools and focus your search.
Start by identifying schools or nurseries in your area. Use search engines, educational directories, and social media groups dedicated to parenting or local community life to find institutions nearby. Create a list of schools that fit your initial criteria and make note of their contact information and key details.
Personal recommendations can provide valuable insights. Talk to friends, family members, or neighbours who have children attending local schools. They can share firsthand experiences, including the school's strengths and areas for improvement.
Recommendations can often highlight factors that aren't immediately obvious from a website or a brochure.
Once you have a list, visit the official websites of each institution. Look for:
• Programs and Curriculum
Information: What subjects are offered? Do they have special programs for gifted students or those with learning difficulties?
• Faculty Backgrounds: The qualifications and experience of teachers can give you an idea of the school's teaching quality.
• Facilities: Look for information on libraries, sports grounds, technology labs, and other facilities.
• Mission Statements and Values: Understanding the school’s ethos can help you see if it aligns with your family's values.
Many schools now offer virtual tours or introductory videos online, which can help you get a sense of the environment.
Check online platforms, such as educational forums and review websites, for feedback about the schools on your list. Look for reviews from parents and students to get different perspectives. Keep in mind that while online reviews can be insightful, they can also be subjective. Try to read a range of opinions to get a balanced view.
A personal visit is invaluable. During your visit, pay attention to:
• Classroom Atmosphere: Are students engaged and enthusiastic? Does the classroom environment seem positive and conducive to learning?
• Interactions with Teachers and Staff: Ask questions about the school's educational approach, student support services, and safety measures.
• General Facilities: Evaluate the condition of classrooms, playgrounds, libraries, and other amenities. Don’t hesitate to ask about the
admission process, entrance criteria, and other requirements during the visit.
Private schools and nurseries often come with tuition fees, and there may be additional costs such as uniforms, extracurricular activities, and transportation. Review the fee structure and ensure it fits within your budget.
After gathering all the information, trust your instincts. The "best" school may not always be the most prestigious or expensive one but the one that feels right for your child’s unique personality and needs. A school that fosters a love of learning, supports individual growth, and aligns with your family's values may be the best choice for you.
The journey may seem challenging, but with a clear understanding of your priorities, diligent research, and a bit of intuition, you’ll find the right fit for your child's education and development.

Materials Needed: Toilet paper rolls, paint (brown, red, white, black, orange), paintbrushes, googly eyes or marker, pom-poms, pipe cleaners, felt, glitter paper, cotton or faux fur, glue, scissors.
Design Ideas: Paint each roll in different colours for each character. For the reindeer, use brown paint and add a red pompom nose. Santa can be red with a cotton beard, and the snowman is white with earmuffs and a carrot nose.
Assemble & Decorate: Add details using pom-poms, pipe cleaners, felt scarves, and glitter paper for belts. Glue on googly eyes or use markers to create faces.
Finishing Touch: Display these cute characters on shelves, as part of a centrepiece, or even add a loop for hanging on the tree!
Materials Needed: Smooth rocks, white acrylic paint, fine-tipped paintbrushes.
Painted rocks can be displayed indoors or outdoors, and they’re a perfect decoration for the holiday season.
Finding & Preparing Rocks: Look for smooth, clean rocks. Wash and let them dry completely before painting.
Painting Snowflakes: Using white paint and a fine brush, paint snowflake designs on each rock. Start with a central dot and draw lines radiating outward, adding smaller details like dots or short lines along each arm.
Sealing the Rocks: For rocks that will go outside, use a clear sealant to protect your designs from the elements.
Materials Needed: Pine cones, white paint, paintbrushes, glitter, glue
These make beautiful Christmas decorations that add a touch of nature to your decor.
Painting the Tips: Using a small brush, paint the tips of each pine cone with white paint to mimic snow. Add a light coat of glitter for extra sparkle.
Display Ideas: Hang them as ornaments, arrange them in bowls, or string them up as garlands.
Variation: You can also spray-paint the pine cones in metallic colours for a more sophisticated look.
Materials Needed: Brown or white paper, paint, paintbrushes, markers, sponges, stencils.
You and your kids can create beautiful, one-of-a-kind wrapping paper using brown or white paper as a blank canvas. Here are a few ideas:
Handprints: Use the kids' hands (or feet) to make adorable handprint designs. For example, a green handprint can become a Christmas tree when decorated with tiny paint dots for ornaments. Sponges & Stencils: Use pre-made stencils or cut holiday shapes (stars, snowflakes, trees) in sponges. Dip the sponges in paint and stamp them onto the paper.
Paintbrush Splatters: For older kids, splattering paint can be a fun way to create a colourful design.
Instructions: Lay the paper flat on a protected surface, let the kids dip the stamps or their hands into paint, and make patterns across the paper. Let the paint dry before wrapping your gifts.
Materials Needed: Felt sheets in various colours, fabric glue, scissors, ribbons, buttons.
Felt is easy to work with, even for young kids, and felt decorations can be made in any shape!
Design Ideas: Simple shapes like Christmas trees, stars, and stockings are great if you do it for the first time. Cut out two identical shapes from the felt and use fabric glue to attach them around the edges, leaving a small opening.
Stuff & Decorate: Add a little stuffing to make them puffy, then glue or sew the rest shut. Decorate with buttons, sequins, or fabric markers.
Finishing Touch: Sew a ribbon loop at the top for easy hanging on the Christmas tree.
Materials Needed: 1 cup salt, 2 cups flour, 1 cup warm water, rolling pin, cookie cutters, acrylic paint, ribbon.
Salt dough ornaments are easy to make and can be personalized by painting and decorating them after baking.
Making the Dough: Mix the salt, flour, and water until you get a firm dough. Roll it out on a floured surface.
Cutting Shapes: Use cookie cutters to cut out holiday shapes like stars, bells, and trees. Make a small hole at the top of each ornament for hanging.
Baking & Decorating: Bake at a low temperature (around 200°F) for 2-3 hours or until hard. Once cool, paint with acrylics and tie a ribbon through the top to hang.
Enjoy each moment and celebrate the joy of crafting together! Yes, we know it will be total chaos and a big mess, but the laughter will be for life.
We'd love to see your finished projects! Share them with us on social media using the hashtag #GreenGuideMagazineDIYChristmasFun. You might inspire other families to get creative this holiday season!
