CHISWICK BOOK FESTIVAL 2025

Stories, Strolls, and a Celebration of Community

This September, West London comes alive with literary brilliance as the Chiswick Book Festival returns for its 17th year. Running from 10th to 15th September, the festival brings together an exceptional mix of acclaimed authors, emerging voices, and family-friendly events. Held across beloved local venues like St Michael & All Angels Church & Parish Hall, Chiswick House & Gardens, Chiswick Library, Theatre at the Tabard, The Chiswick Cinema and The George IV pub, this community-led event champions the joy of reading in all its forms — and all for a good cause.

The festival supports St Michael & All Angels and several literacy charities, including Read for Good, Koestler Arts, and Read Easy Ealing, making every ticket sold a contribution to wider reading access and education.

THE LOCAL AUTHORS' SHOWCASE (10TH SEP)

Wednesday evening sees the Local Authors' Showcase at the George IV pub. Hosted by Jo James, this fast-paced and lively evening celebrates Chiswick's own writing talent and is an excellent start to the festival. Each author has two minutes to pitch their book before handing over the mic to the next. The result is a dynamic literary event, complete with a buzzing atmosphere and a well-stocked bar. It's an entertaining reminder of the area's rich creative pulse.

A SPOTLIGHT ON JANE AUSTEN: FACT MEETS FICTION (11TH SEP)

One of the most anticipated evenings this year dives deep into the life of a literary icon. Gill Hornby, bestselling author and president of the Jane Austen Society, brings her novel Miss Austen to life in a special event supported by the Chiswick House & Gardens Trust.

Hornby is joined by BBC drama director Aisling Walsh and actors Phyllis Logan and Kevin McNally to explore Austen's personal history and the secrets, maybe hidden in her family letters — some famously destroyed by her sister Cassandra. The session blends

history, drama, and literary curiosity, giving Austen fans a glimpse into the complexities of her private world.

LITERARY WALKS

For those who prefer literature off the page and into the streets, the festival offers guided literary walks that trace Chiswick's writerly history. With knowledgeable Blue Badge guides like Guy Fairbank and Alan Fortune, you'll discover the homes and haunts of Nobel Prize winners, bestselling novelists, and some lesser-known literary eccentrics.

With the Riverside Writers Walk uncovering spies and screenwriters, and the Bedford Park tour exploring the legacy of literary heavyweights, these walking tours offer a delightful blend of history, biography, and local colour.

THE CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL

The Chiswick Book Festival isn't just for grown-ups. Across the weekend, young book lovers are treated to a wide range of engaging and playful sessions as part of the Children's Festival.

A highlight is the appearance of Axel Scheffler, illustrator of The Gruffalo, who will live-draw, read from his new book Welcome, and share behind-the-scenes tales from his collaborations with Julia Donaldson. Expect laughs, sketching, and a chance to ask the artist those Gruffalo questions.

Other children's events include Kev F. Sutherland's Comic Masterclasses, storytelling adventures with Mariesa Dulak, and interactive workshops with Michael Holland, celebrating nature and creativity.

Whether you're an Austen enthusiast, a curious stroller, or a young explorer of picture books, the Chiswick Book Festival 2025 offers something to delight and inspire everyone. With its combination of literary star power and strong community roots, this West London festival continues to spread its storytelling magic.

So we got to work, speaking to past clients, knocking on doors, beginning discreet conversations with local homeowners who hadn’t considered moving… until now.

At that point, most sales fall apart. This didn’t.

Leona is the force behind AVTAV, a standout recruitment and training agency in the aviation industry. With over two decades of experience, she’s built a business grounded in values, vision, and resilience. In this exclusive interview, she opens up about her career journey, motherhood, leadership, and the importance of building businesses with purpose.

You’re now the Managing Director of a thriving recruitment agency. Can you take us through your professional journey before you entered the recruitment industry?

I left school at 16 and went straight into work. A friend of mine was the manager at Thomson City Breaks in Richmond and helped me get my foot in the door. It was travel-related — I sold city breaks over the phone in a call centre and was quite successful. I eventually became the team supervisor. I really loved that job. Part of the role meant visiting every city we sold holidays to — I’d go and test the hotels and experience the journey myself so I could sell it properly. That experience taught me a lot, and I’ve applied the same mindset to what I do now: you can’t truly understand your customer or sell to them effectively unless you’re deeply immersed in the product or experience yourself. So yes, I visited every city, Disneyland, the Orient Express — all of it. It was fantastic. I stopped at 21 when I had my eldest daughter. After that, I set up my own cleaning business. I secured some major contracts, recruited a team of cleaning ladies, and built a successful small business. When I had my second daughter, I wanted to learn something new — and that’s where my recruitment journey began.

Before launching your own business, you held several significant leadership roles. How has this experience helped shape your entrepreneurial vision?

Leading with Purpose and Vision LEONA MUNYATI

I went into recruitment when I was 25. The first company I worked for specialised in temporary recruitment, particularly within the aviation sector, and I spent many years there. That’s where I developed my deep understanding of aviation and built my foundations in the industry. Later, I moved to another recruitment agency. They were just six months old when I joined, turning over £1 million at the time. By the time I left, my division alone was generating £19 million in sales. I had progressed to Regional Director and was heavily involved in scaling the business. Aviation security and temporary recruitment have always been my specialism, and I invested a lot of time and energy into growing that business. But eventually, I reached a point where I wanted to run my own business. My initial plan was to set up an aviation security training company — and that’s where AVTAV began. During my time in the industry, I’d noticed a number of gaps — particularly around aviation security training. At my previous company, we used to outsource it, and I regularly witnessed compliance issues and shortfalls in standards. I had a clear vision of building an all-inclusive, high-spec business that could deliver fully compliant recruitment and training services without cutting corners. And the only way to truly guarantee quality and control — is to have full control.

So, at 40, I went back into education. I completed my A Levels in Education and Training, became a certified trainer through the Department for Transport, and launched AVTAV as a CAA-registered training provider — from my front room. It was during the pandemic, and the timing played a big role. While many businesses were closing, we were setting up. The world was quiet, and it gave me space to focus. I used those two years at home with no distractions to formalise a master plan — and executed it when the world reopened. I started to build a team. I paid the first employee out of my own pocket for a year. Then, I brought in business partners. And although I’d set out to focus purely on training, I couldn’t stay away from recruitment — it’s in my blood. I naturally returned to it, and added it to what ultimately became the full-service business that AVTAV is today.

How integral has your family’s support been throughout your business journey?

Incredibly important. I’ve been lucky to have people around me who genuinely

If you want to build something meaningful - you can’t do it alone. “ “

empower and believe in me. When I decided to set up AVTAV, both my husband and my brother were right behind me. My husband is a strategist, so he supported me with clarity and planning. My brother also believed in the vision and invested in the business.

Our business partner Taurai, who came in as Financial Director, also believed in my vision — and together, we formed what I’d call a master key alliance, as Napoleon Hill would put it. That collective belief helped me believe in myself even more.

My mum has always been a huge support. And my daughters — they honestly believe I’m Superwoman. And because they do, I’ve come to believe it too.

That kind of support is everything. It matters for your personal well-being, your professional well-being, and your growth. Because truthfully, if you want to build something meaningful — you can’t do it alone.

Balancing career and motherhood is never easy. How did you navigate parenting while building your career?

It definitely wasn’t easy. When my daughters were young, I went out into the world of recruitment — supported by my mother, without whom I couldn’t have juggled it all. She helped with school pickups and contributed so much to their childhood — days out, picnics, theatre trips — all the moments that matter. She’s been a wonderful role model in their lives, and it’s built an unbreakable bond between them. Do I regret it? No — but I do sometimes reflect on the hours I wasn’t at home. Still, I wouldn’t change anything. I was their provider, and building a future for us was my determination.

When they’re little, it feels like they’ll stay that way forever — then suddenly, they’re teenagers. But no matter what, being a mum is my most important role in life.

My biggest motivator has always been to inspire my daughters — to show them, by example, that a woman can do it.

Are your daughters like you?

Definitely. My eldest, India, is 25 now. She grew up listening to me on the phone, recruiting. When we set up AVTAV, she came on board and worked her way up — she’s now our highest biller. People often

say it looks effortless for her — and in many ways, it is. She’s been indirectly trained her whole life.

My younger daughter, Olivia, 21, is also part of the business. She’s been close to my career from the beginning, although she’s naturally more drawn to — and skilled in — the behind-the-scenes operations. She currently works within AVTAV’s finance department and supports a wide range of business activities.

They both bring their own strengths and personalities to the business, but they absolutely share my ambition. We’re a family business at the core — and I’m incredibly proud of that.

Leadership can be learned, but some people seem born for it. Would you say you’ve always been a natural leader?

Yes — I’d say I’ve always followed my instincts rather than what I was told. My father was an entrepreneur, and so was my mum. Neither of them ever worked for anyone else.

My mum ran a catering company, moved into events, and later earned a degree in psychotherapy in her 40s. She went on to work at the Football Association for 30 years as a psychotherapist. She built an incredible career for herself later in life, and that’s been a huge inspiration for me. We’re all quite self-motivated in my family — maybe a bit rebellious too. I didn’t do well in school because I didn’t attend often. I never went to college or university. I started working at 16 and just figured things out from there.

In any group I’ve been part of, I’ve always naturally stepped into leadership roles. So yes, I’d say I’m a natural leader — it’s always been in me.

Your company has a strong female workforce. Do you feel a sense of responsibility as a role model to the women in your organisation?

That’s always been my dream — to build a strong, empowered female team. I’ve worked in male-dominated environments where I felt additional pressure, and I knew I wanted to create a space where women feel safe and supported — where being a mother or needing flexibility doesn’t block success.

We have a relaxed, trusting environment where everyone has autonomy. I believe in giving people space to express themselves and shape roles around their lives. Take Simone, who works in our training team — she has five children but that hasn’t stopped her following her career dreams and recently completed her degree first in Aviation Management. We created a position that works for her life, because why wouldn’t we? Women bring so much to the table.

We’ve also got brilliant young women here. They know they don’t need to fear losing their careers if their lives change. We have many women in our business, and I take that responsibility seriously. I’m here to support each one of them to get wherever they wish to go — whatever that looks like for them.

Do I feel a sense of pressure? Yes — there is some, because they believe in me, and I’ve made promises. That means something. Vasilena joined me during the pandemic, when AVTAV was just a concept. I had no office, just a plan — and she trusted me. She had just finished her Aviation Management degree and came to work for me on very little pay. She was 21 at the time. Today, she’s 26 and our Aviation Security Manager. I took her on a journey, but really — she believed in me, and I believed in her. My vision is to see her take a seat at board level one day.

For me, being a business owner isn’t just about strategy — it’s about people, and it’s about life. I want everyone here to feel like we’re in this together. This is our company. I’m not the boss — I just have a different responsibility.

Running a business is not easy. How do you deal when things get tough?

We work in a people-driven industry that’s shaped by legislation, regulation, and constant change — so yes, things do go wrong. But I’ve learned that I’m at my best in a crisis. It’s probably my biggest strength. I stay calm, I focus on the solution, and I don’t pass pressure down the line. That’s never been my style. I want the team to feel supported — not stressed.

Of course, I have expectations of the team. But my role is to help them face pressure in a positive and effective way — because that’s how we truly grow and build.

As the leader, I take that pressure on myself. That’s part of the job.

What are some of your favourite ways to relax and maintain a sense of balance outside of work?

My husband and I run two recruitment businesses together — I lead AVTAV, and he leads Complex — so recruitment is definitely a regular topic of conversation in the early hours. But we’ve also learned how to switch off, leave work outside, and enjoy life.

Family time is how I recharge. Whether it’s with my mum, my husband, my daughters, or my brother and his family — being surrounded by them helps me reset.

We’ve also got quite a few dogs and are both very passionate about them, plus gardening, walking, and spending time in nature.

Healthy eating and cooking play a huge role in my life too — it’s something I genuinely enjoy and find grounding.

I also love to travel as much as I can, though I haven’t had much time for it this year.

But I often remind myself: I built this for freedom — so I make sure I enjoy it.

One of my favourite things is spending time with my mum and aunt — whether it’s a trip to the cinema, dinner out, shopping or stories of our family and my Italian Grandmother whom we all adored. That’s joy for me. That’s balance.

My dream is to be recognised as a business that cares for its people and leaves a lasting mark. “ “

Looking ahead, what’s next for you and your growing business?

AVTAV is on the right path. We’ve spent the last five years building solid infrastructure, growing a strong team, and establishing real brand awareness. Now, we’re entering the next stage — expanding into more UK airports and scaling our national presence. We’re also expanding our aviation security training division and launching an online Learning Management System (LMS) to make high-quality, compliant training more accessible to clients and candidates alike. Alongside that, I’ve launched a separate permanent recruitment company called Permstop, which focuses on the construction, aviation engineering, and tech sectors across the UK and US.

I’ve realised that I truly love the building phase of business — that’s where I thrive. So the goal now is to continue growing AVTAV, build another standout brand, and expand the team further.

We’ve retained most of our original team — some of whom have worked with me for over 15 years — and that, to me, is a real testament to the relationships we’ve built. My dream is to be recognised as a business that genuinely cares for its people, builds meaningful careers, and leaves a lasting mark — not just commercially, but culturally too.

Finally, what message or advice would you offer to young women—or anyone—wanting to start a business?

Do it. That’s it. There’s no perfect formula — you’ll find your own way. But mindset is everything.

Educate yourself on mindset. Understand what’s truly possible if you believe in it. Let go of the old beliefs that no longer serve you. Keep your plans to yourself if you need to. Stay focused.

And above all — believe in yourself. That’s where everything begins.

GENTLE YOGA THERAPY TIPS 5 To Ease Stress After 50

As life shifts in our 50s and beyond, stress doesn't vanish—it simply takes new forms. Whether it's navigating health changes, caring for loved ones, or adjusting to retirement, the emotional weight can quietly grow. Yoga therapy offers a simple and effective way to ease stress and bring balance back to body and mind.

Unlike mainstream yoga classes, yoga therapy focuses on personalised, gentle practices that support the nervous system. It's not about performance—no flexibility or previous experience required. It's about helping you feel more grounded, calm, and resilient. Here are five accessible yoga therapy practices designed to support your well-being.

1. Breathe with Purpose

Breathing is automatic, but conscious breathing is therapeutic. Shallow or erratic breathing—common during stress—can signal the brain to stay alert, keeping us anxious.

Try this: Sit in a relaxed position. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. Inhale slowly through your nose, allowing your belly to expand. Exhale gently. Repeat for a few minutes, keeping your breath slow and even. This belly breathing calms the nervous system, slows the heart rate, and creates a sense of inner ease.

2. Move to Release Tension

As we age, physical stress can manifest as tight shoulders, neck stiffness, or aching joints. Gentle movement increases circulation, loosens tight areas, and helps reduce emotional stress stored in the body. Try this: While seated or standing, inhale and raise your arms towards the sky, and on the outbreath, fold forward towards the ground. Repeat 4-6 times, without wanting

your knees. Place one hand on your heart, the other on your belly. Breathe slowly, allowing the body to unwind. This combination of gratitude and rest prepares your system for a more peaceful night.

A Kind Approach to Self-Care

Stress is a part of life, but how we care for ourselves in the face of it makes all the difference. For those over 50, yoga therapy

WHY MENOPAUSE NEEDS A CULTURAL REBRAND

We live in a world where almost every conversation has come out into the open — mental health, periods, identity, fertility. And yet, menopause? Still a whisper behind closed doors.

Perimenopause and menopause are something many women are expected to “just get on with.” Still wrapped in stigma, silence, and a heavy layer of misunderstanding. It’s time for that to change. It’s time for menopause to have a cultural rebrand.

Menopause is not an illness. It’s a natural, biological transition that every woman who reaches midlife will go through. And yet, the way it’s often portrayed – both in society and in the workplace – is as though it’s a decline. Something to hide, apologise for, or quietly suffer through. I’ve spoken to hundreds of women who feel lost, invisible, or even ashamed during this phase of life. But I’ve also seen how transformative it can be when we begin to talk openly, to tell the truth, and to create space for real support. There are still so many myths surrounding menopause. Let’s tackle a few.

Myth 1:

Menopause only affects older women. In truth, symptoms can begin years before your periods stop. Perimenopause – the lead-up to menopause – can begin in your early 40s, sometimes earlier. That means many women in the workplace juggling senior roles, caring responsibilities, and full lives are doing so while experiencing brain fog, anxiety, poor sleep, and hormonal disruption — often without support.

Myth 2:

It’s just a few hot flushes.

If only! While hot flushes are common, menopause can affect mood, memory, digestion, energy levels, skin, joints, confidence, and relationships. It’s a fullbody experience, and it’s different for everyone.

Myth 3:

Talking about menopause is unprofessional.

Actually, ignoring it is what’s unprofessional. In workplaces across the UK, talented, experienced women are stepping down or stepping away — not because they lack ability, but because they lack understanding and flexibility from employers.

This is where the cultural rebrand must begin: in our language, our expectations,

and our systems. Menopause doesn’t mean a woman is past her prime. In fact, midlife is a time when many women find their voice, rediscover themselves, and step into a new kind of power — if they are given the right support.

We need employers to understand that menopause is not a taboo. It’s a health and wellbeing matter. It’s a retention issue. And it’s a sign of a compassionate, progressive organisation when it’s taken seriously. Menopause support in the workplace — whether through policies, education, or simply being open to conversations — isn’t a “nice to have.” It’s necessary.

The real honour is walking alongside women through this often-delicate and debilitating transition, helping them realise they are not broken. They are evolving. Let’s not talk about menopause as something to dread or endure. Let’s talk about it as the powerful transition it is — one that deserves respect, resources, and real conversation. Let’s rebrand menopause — from silence to strength.

We are here to THRIVE, not just survive!

Practical Steps Toward a Menopause Cultural Rebrand

If we truly want menopause to be understood and supported, the cultural rebrand has to be lived, not just talked about. Here are three shifts we can all make – whether we’re employers, colleagues, friends, or family:

1. Change the language: Words matter. Swap “the change” or “getting old” for phrases like “midlife evolution” or “hormonal transition.” Positive, accurate language removes shame and encourages openness.

2. Normalise the conversation: Make menopause a topic that can be discussed

as naturally as mental health or pregnancy. If you’re a leader, start the conversation yourself – it gives permission for others to speak up.

3. Offer real flexibility: For many women, small adjustments – like flexible start times, cooler workspaces, or the option to work from home during challenging days – can transform their ability to work well.

Menopause isn’t a pause in a woman’s life – it’s a recalibration. With the right understanding, this stage can be one of growth, confidence, and renewed energy. When workplaces and communities embrace that truth, we all benefit.

The rebrand starts with each of us. Let’s move from silence and stigma to respect and recognition.

“It’s time we saw menopause for what it really is — a gateway to strength, wisdom, and unapologetic living.”

READY TO FEEL MORE CONFIDENT?

If you’re feeling stuck - and would like to step forward with courage and clarity, I would love to help you.

When I first started coaching, I sometimes told myself: “What if I run out of ideas? What if I can’t help my clients the way they need? What if I don’t know what to say in a session?”

Clearly, these were unhelpful thoughts!

So, I reframed them:

“I have a wealth of ideas - many of which I haven’t even used yet. I’ve helped clients successfully before, and when I feel challenged in a session, it pushes me to grow and serve more deeply.”

My clients have given me consistent positive feedback. I learned that I can trust myself - and that I’m often my own harshest critic - but I can recognise that inner voice and choose a kinder, more helpful one.

The

Confidence Reframe Tool

SHIFT is a simple but powerful tool that you can use to build self-confidence.

See the story: What story are you telling yourself?

Hold it up to the light - question it: Is the story helpful, or harmful?

Imagine a better version: What’s a more empowering and truthful version?

Follow through with action: Take one small step from this empowered perspective.

Track what you learned: What did you prove to yourself? What did you learn?

My Story

There was a time when I thought I had to have it all together. I worked as a barrister in London for years, then as a litigation attorney overseas - always in control, always achieving. But life broke me open. In 2017, I lived through Hurricane Irma in the British Virgin Islands - one of the strongest Category 5 storms ever to make landfall. I developed PTSD, experiencing panic attacks when I couldn’t breathe and my heart raced, feeling like it was going to burst out of my chest. I also experienced terrifying out of mind and body moments - when taking off

in a plane from one place, I would look out the window, and in real-time, I’d see the BVI on evacuation day. I was transported right back to those moments of overwhelming sadness, fear and uncertainty. And then without even realising it, I would start crying - in public, on a plane.

Recovery didn’t happen overnight - but it did happen. Through that process, I found something I never really had before: selfcompassion, clarity on what matters most, and a new kind of quiet strength that comes from within.

Now, I work with clients who are ready to reclaim that same strength. I help people build real confidence, manage anxiety, and show up fully in their lives - not by pretending, but by learning to move forward even when fear is present.

Smarter Fitness in Chiswick

Two Studios That Fit Your Life

How a once-a-week strength session and a 20-minute body-toning workout transformed my fitness at 52

In the heart of Chiswick, two innovative fitness studios are showing that more exercise isn’t always better — smarter exercise is. For anyone short on time, recovering from injury, over 50, or simply wanting lasting results without long hours at the gym, fit20 Chiswick and EMS FIT Chiswick offer a revolutionary way to train. They’re different — and that’s the point. fit20 focuses on strength and longevity through a once-weekly 20 minutes session, slow-resistance training.

EMS FIT uses electrical muscle stimulation to tone, shape, and activate muscles in just 20 minutes.

Both are guided 1-on-1 with a personal trainer. Both are time-saving. And both changed everything for me.

From Overwhelmed to Empowered – My Fitness Routine That Changed Everything

I used to feel completely stuck. At 52, I wasn’t unfit — but my knees ached, my energy was low, and every time I thought about going back to the gym, I felt exhausted before I even started.

Then I stumbled across an article in this magazine a few months ago about fit20 Chiswick and EMS FIT Chiswick. I was intrigued. Just 20 minutes a week? It sounded too good to be true. But it wasn’t.

My first stop was fit20. There’s no loud music or mirrors — just a calm studio where your personal trainer guides you through precise, slow resistance movements. It was only 20 minutes, once a week, but it felt powerful. I could feel my body working hard — without pain, strain, or sweat. After a month, my back pain eased, I stood taller, and I felt stronger in ways that surprised me.

Next, I tried EMS FIT Chiswick. This one’s different — you wear a suit that sends gentle electrical impulses to your muscles while you move. It felt strange at first, but wow — my core, glutes, and posture improved quickly. It was challenging in the best way, and the whole session was over in 20 minutes.

What I love is how well the two complement each other:

fit20 is about building deep strength and protecting my body for the future.

EMS FIT gives me tone, posture, and a sense of energy I’d forgotten I had.

Together, they’ve become my nonnegotiable hour a week. No pressure, no fluff — just results.

Want to Try for Yourself?

If you live in Chiswick and want to train smarter, not longer, I can’t recommend these studios enough. Whether you pick one or combine both, the support is personal, the science is real, and the time investment is minimal.

REASONS TO VISIT VALLETTA IN MALTA THIS WINTER A Festive Escape 7

In September 2024, as the festive season approached, I found myself dreaming of a winter escape that offered something a little different from the usual frosty European cities. My heart was set on sunshine, history, and a touch of Christmas magic, which led me straight to Valletta, Malta. And oh, what a delightful decision that was! This charming capital, a UNESCO World Heritage site, truly delivered a unique blend of culture, history, and surprisingly mild Mediterranean weather. Forget the grey skies; here, the December air was filled with a gentle warmth and the city sparkled with festive cheer.

EMBRACE OLD-WORLD CHARM A Karozzin Ride

One of my first adventures was hopping into a traditional horse-drawn cart, a 'karozzin', for a leisurely tour. Clip-clopping through Valletta's narrow, historic streets felt like stepping back in time. It was a wonderful way to get my bearings and admire the beautiful architecture, especially with the subtle Christmas decorations beginning to appear on balconies and lampposts. While I knew I'd be doing plenty of walking to truly explore, this gentle ride offered a relaxed introduction, allowing me to simply soak in the city's unique atmosphere. It was a lovely, unhurried way to see the sights, particularly as we passed the grand Holy Infirmary. If you are looking for a charming overview, this is a perfect start to your Valletta experience.

SAVOUR THE NATIONAL FLAVOUR Rabbit Stew

After all that exploring, my appetite was certainly piqued, and there was one dish I simply had to try: Stuffat tal-Fenek, Malta's national rabbit stew. I found a cosy little restaurant tucked away on a side street, its windows adorned with twinkling fairy lights. The stew arrived, rich and fragrant, slow-cooked with wine, tomatoes, garlic, and bay leaves. It was the perfect comfort food for a winter evening, warming me from the inside out. Each bite was a revelation, and I quickly understood why it's such a beloved dish. It felt like a true taste of Maltese tradition, and I made sure to use every last piece of crusty bread to mop up the delicious sauce. A culinary experience not to be missed!

GARDEN VIEWS AND GRAND VISTAS

Barrakka Gardens

BRIDGE THE OLD AND NEW A Trip to Sliema

One afternoon, I decided to venture beyond Valletta's historic walls and take a trip to Sliema. I opted for the bus, which was a straightforward journey taking around 15-30 minutes and costing approximately €2 for a single ticket. The bus offered lovely glimpses of the coastline as we left the capital. If you prefer to walk, it's a scenic stroll along the coastline that takes about an hour, depending on your pace. Sliema has a distinctly different vibe – more modern, with a bustling promenade and contemporary shops. It was a pleasant contrast to Valletta's ancient charm. While there, I stumbled upon Jugos Juice and Coffee, a delightful little spot. I treated myself to a refreshing smoothie and a warm pistachio croissant, sitting by the window and watching the world go by. It was a perfect moment of relaxation, a little slice of modern comfort amidst my historical explorations. The walk back along the waterfront, with Valletta's illuminated skyline in the distance, was simply magical.

Valletta is blessed with two stunning public gardens, the Lower and Upper Barrakka Gardens, and I found myself drawn to them repeatedly. The Upper Barrakka Gardens, perched high above the city, offered the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. It was particularly special to visit around noon when the Saluting Battery fired its cannons – a powerful reminder of Malta's military past. You can easily access the Upper Barrakka Gardens from the Grand Harbour via the Barrakka Lift, which costs €1.00 for a return trip. I loved watching the ships glide in and out of the harbour, imagining all the history that unfolded in that very spot. The Lower Barrakka Gardens, a short stroll away, were equally charming, with their peaceful atmosphere and monuments. I spent a quiet moment admiring the neoclassical temple dedicated to Sir Alexander Ball and the striking bronze statue of Aeneas. Both gardens provided a serene escape from the city's lively streets, and the winter light made the views even more dramatic.

STEP INTO HISTORY

A UNESCO Capital

Walking through Valletta, you cannot help but feel immersed in history. The fact that the entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage site truly speaks volumes. Every street, every building, tells a story. I loved wandering through the grid-patterned streets, discovering hidden courtyards and grand palazzos, many of them subtly decorated for Christmas with wreaths and lights. It felt like an open-air museum, but one that was still very much alive. The sheer concentration of historical monuments within such a small area is astounding. It was a constant reminder of the Knights Hospitaller and their enduring legacy, making every stroll a journey through centuries of fascinating history.

CHASE THE WINTER SUN Malta's Sunny Disposition

One of the most delightful surprises of my December trip was the glorious sunshine. While my friends back home were bundling up against the cold, I was enjoying mild temperatures and bright, clear skies. It felt almost surreal to be walking around in a light jacket, sipping coffee outdoors in a sundrenched piazza, especially when Christmas carols were playing softly in the background. The consistent sunshine made every outdoor activity a pleasure, from exploring the city's nooks and crannies to simply sitting on a bench and soaking up the warmth. It truly made Valletta feel like a proper winter escape, offering that much-needed dose of vitamin D and a cheerful atmosphere that perfectly complemented the festive season.

GRANDEUR OF THE KNIGHTS

The Grand Master's Palace

No visit to Valletta is complete without exploring the Grand Master's Palace. Standing majestically in St. George's Square, this building truly embodies the grandeur of the Knights Hospitaller. I was captivated by the newly restored interiors, particularly the State Rooms with their intricate frescoes and the impressive Armoury, filled with weapons and armour from centuries past. Walking through the corridors, I could almost hear the echoes of history, imagining the lives of the Grand Masters who once resided there. It was a powerful experience, offering a tangible connection to Malta's rich past and the significant role this island played in European history. The Palace felt like the heart of Valletta, a place where history truly comes alive.

BEYOND THE SEVEN: More to Explore

My time in Valletta was filled with discoveries around every corner. Beyond these seven highlights, I found myself drawn to the Siege Bell War Memorial. It's a simple yet incredibly moving monument, located near the Lower Barrakka Gardens, commemorating those who bravely defended Malta during the Second World War. Standing there, looking out over the harbour, I felt a profound sense of respect for the island's resilience. It was a quiet moment of reflection amidst the festive bustle.

And speaking of views, the Upper Barrakka Gardens became a favourite spot for me, not just for the daily Saluting Battery ceremony, but for the sheer spectacle of the Grand Harbour. It's a natural wonder, constantly alive with boats and ships, and from the gardens, you get an unparalleled perspective of its strategic

importance. I loved watching the ferries crisscross the water, connecting Valletta to the Three Cities, all bathed in that beautiful winter light. Finally, back in the Lower Barrakka Gardens, I spent some time appreciating the smaller details. These gardens, with their blend of natural beauty and historical monuments, provided many peaceful moments during my visit. Valletta, even in winter, is a city that truly embraces you with its history, its warmth, and its festive spirit. It's a destination that leaves a lasting impression, inviting you to return again and again.

Family mediation explained Legal guidance for resolving disputes calmly

When relationships break down, particularly where children or shared assets are involved, the impact can be overwhelming. For many, the thought of court proceedings only adds to the strain.

That’s why, alongside our specialist family law services, we offer accredited mediation: a calm, confidential way to resolve disputes more constructively and often more quickly than through court.

Family solicitor and accredited mediator James Kiely answers common questions to help you decide if mediation could be right for you.

What issues can mediation help resolve?

Family mediation can be used to address a broad range of issues, including child arrangements, financial settlements, and division of property.

Why consider family mediation?

Mediation offers a more personal and empowering way to resolve disputes, rather than leaving decisions to the court. It’s typically more cost-effective than litigation, quicker to arrange, fully confidential, and encourages cooperation over confrontation.

What’s the process?

It starts with an initial meeting (called a MIAM), where we assess whether mediation is suitable. If so, structured sessions follow, led by an accredited mediator who helps both parties explore solutions. Any agreement reached can be documented and, if needed, made legally binding.

Is mediation just for divorcing couples?

Not at all . Mediation can help unmarried couples, parents, grandparents, and other family members resolve disputes.

owenwhitecaitlin.co.uk

and constructively

Will I need legal advice?

Yes. While mediation is designed to promote agreement, it’s important you understand your legal position. We offer clear, supportive legal guidance alongside mediation, ensuring you’re well-informed at every stage.

What if the other person refuses mediation?

Mediation is voluntary, so both sides must agree to participate. If the other party declines, we can still help by issuing the necessary MIAM form and advising on alternative ways forward.

Does mediation always work?

Mediation is highly effective, but not every case will reach agreement. If mediation doesn’t lead to resolution, we’ll be ready to guide you through the next steps, whether that’s court or another form of dispute resolution.

How much does it cost?

Mediation is usually more affordable than court, and costs are generally shared. At Owen White Catlin, we offer transparent, fixed-fee guidance, so you can make decisions with confidence.

Talk to a trusted expert

Choosing mediation is the first step towards calmer, more respectful resolution.

If you’re unsure where to begin, we’re here to help. With decades of experience in family law and accredited mediation, our team will support you with empathy, clarity, and practical know-how.

The Healthy Taste of the Season

COURGETTES

Courgette, also known as zucchini, is a summer squash in the Cucurbitaceae plant family, alongside melons, spaghetti squash, and cucumbers.

It is technically a fruit because it develops from the flower of the courgette plant and contains seeds. It grows in abundance and can reach lengths of up to 1 metre. Courgettes can vary in colour, from green to deep yellow.

Courgettes originated in Italy in the 1800s, but the Americans were among the first to commonly harvest this fruit. The courgette is relatively cost-effective to buy and is also very versatile in cooking. It can be used in stir-fries, steamed, boiled, eaten raw in salads, or included in bakery recipes. The courgette flowers are edible and considered a delicacy in many cuisines. They can be eaten raw, stuffed and fried, or used in various dishes.

Courgettes are rich in vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C,

Vitamin B6, Vitamin K, potassium, fibre, protein, and magnesium. Courgettes are also rich in antioxidants.

Other health benefits of courgettes include aiding in bone health, with Vitamin K helping to strengthen bones. They also have anticancer effects and can aid in maintaining a healthy prostate. Courgettes can support thyroid function and promote healthy digestion, as they are rich in water, which can soften stools due to their high fibre content.

Regular consumption of courgettes may help with weight loss. With the excess water in this fruit, it has a low calorie density, which may help you feel full. Its fibre content may also reduce hunger and keep your appetite at bay.

In addition, the fibre can help stabilise blood sugar levels, preventing spikes after meals and thereby helping to lower the risk of Type 2 Diabetes.

SPINACH AND BASIL PESTO COURGETTI

Serves 2

Ingredients

• 180g cherry tomatoes, halved

• Olive oil spray

• 1 tsp dried oregano

• 500g courgettes, spiralised (or largely grated)

• 2 tbsp light single cream

• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

For the spinach and basil pesto

• 150g baby spinach

• 30g basil leaves

• 1 garlic clove

• 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

• Finely grated zest of 1 lemon

• 2 tbsp fresh vegetable stock or water

• ½ tsp grated or ground nutmeg

To finish:

• 10g pine nuts

• A small handful of basil leaves, shredded

• 2 tsp grated parmesan

Method

Preheat the oven to fan 140°C. Line an oven tray with baking parchment. Place the cherry tomatoes, cut side up, on the prepared tray and spray them 10 times with oil. Sprinkle each tomato with a bit of oregano, salt & pepper. Cook on the middle shelf of the oven for 1 ¼ hrs, then set aside to cool.

Meanwhile, for the pesto, put all the ingredients into a jug blender or food processor, add some salt and pepper, and blitz until smooth.

Toast the pine nuts for the garnish in a small, dry pan for 30 seconds, then tip onto a plate & set aside.

Put the spiralised courgettes into a bowl and sprinkle generously with salt. Mix well with your hands, then leave to stand and wilt for 20 minutes, drain in a colander, patting the courgette firmly with kitchen paper to remove all excess water and salt.

Tip the spiralised courgettes into a large pan and add the pesto and ‘cream’. Stir well to coat with the sauce, then cook over medium heat for 2 minutes. Fold in the roasted tomatoes and serve.

RESET, REFUEL, REBOOT

A Family-Friendly Wellness Reset for the New School Year

After a long stretch of unstructured days, late bedtimes, irregular meals, and spontaneous plans, the start of a new school term can feel like a hard jolt back to reality. While summer offers rest and connection, it often throws circadian rhythms, blood sugar balance, and even gut health off track for both adults and children.

Biologically, our bodies crave rhythm. The nervous system, digestive health, hormone balance, and even cognitive function all depend on regular cues; consistent sleep, balanced nourishment, and daily movement to stay in sync.

With that in mind, this seven-part wellness is designed to help your family reset, refuel, and reboot for the new school year.

1. Reclaim your morning routine

The first hour of the day sets the tone. Start by reinstating a consistent wake-up time for both adults and children—ideally allowing time for breakfast and a few moments of calm. Avoid screens in the first 30 minutes where possible and instead encourage sunlight exposure and hydration. A good tip? Prep uniforms, bags, snacks, and your work outfit the night before to ease the rush.

2. Upgrade the lunchbox and desk snacks

Replace ultra-processed lunchbox fillers with whole, colourful options that support focus and steady energy—think boiled eggs, hummus and veggie sticks, wholegrain wraps, berries, or oat-based energy bites. For adults, swap out biscuits for a handful of nuts or a piece of citrus fruit.

3. Prioritise protein in every meal

Protein supports immunity, energy, and growth which is crucial for children and adults alike. Ensure every meal contains a source: eggs, yoghurt, pulses, fish, poultry, or tofu are good options. Breakfast tends to be a common weak spot, try overnight oats with seeds or scrambled eggs on rye or sourdough to start the day strong.

4. Create a calm-down evening wind-down

Routines aren’t just for mornings. An evening rhythm helps the body (and brain) recognise it’s time to unwind. Avoid postdinner screen time where possible, and opt for low-stimulation activities - reading, puzzles, stretching, or mindful breathing. A warm magnesium-rich bath (with Epsom salts) can work wonders for quality sleep.

5. Prioritise immunity before autumn hits

This is a good time to fortify your family’s defences before colds and viruses creep back in. Incorporate immune-supportive nutrients like vitamin C (citrus fruits, kiwi), zinc (pumpkin seeds, lentils), and vitamin D (consider supplementation October to March). Fermented foods like kefir, greek yoghurt or sauerkraut also support gut health.

6. Schedule screen-free outdoor time

Time in nature improves mood, focus, and sleep. Whether it's a family walk or a techfree Sunday in the park, make it part of your family time. Even 15–20 minutes of daily daylight exposure can help reset circadian rhythms and lift low moods.

7. Model wellness, not perfection

Children absorb what they see more than what they’re told. Show them how you nourish your own health—not through restriction or guilt, but balance and consistency. Celebrate small wins, stay flexible, and remember: wellness is a journey, not a destination.

The return to school doesn’t have to signal overwhelm. Think of it as an opportunity to clear out what no longer serves and reintroduce rhythms that support energy, focus, and balance. With a few intentional tweaks, you can set the tone for a happier, more resilient school year for every member of your household.

TEACHERS

The Silent Guiding Light

Every year on 5th October, the world honours one of the most important forces in society: teachers. They are more than just people who stand at the front of a classroom - they are mentors, guides, and sometimes even life-changers.

Parents give children their first words, their first steps, their first lessons in love. Then, the world opens wider, and teachers become part of the journey.

In classrooms, they guide eager minds and uncertain hearts. They show that mistakes are not failures, but stepping stones. They spark curiosity, nurture confidence, and plant seeds of kindness that may grow for a lifetime.

So much of their care is unseenpapers marked late into the night, quiet encouragement given to a shy voice, patience offered to restless hands. They hold each child’s potential as gently as if it were their own.

Side by side with parents, they help shape the people our children will become. Knowledge is their gift, but their greatest lesson is showing what it means to believe in someone.

For this, parents carry a gratitude that words can barely hold. And on World Teachers’ Day, that appreciation is spoken aloud. It is a reminder to honour the dedication that too often goes unspoken, and to celebrate those who help guide the next generation.

We speak with Stuart Byrne, an experienced teacher at Strand on the Green Infant and Nursery School, to learn what motivated his journey into education and how he meets the emotional demands of the profession.

What inspired you to become a teacher, especially working with such young children?

When I was about 19, my older siblings started having children. I felt very much at ease playing with them and looking after them. A few years later, I went back to University to train as a teacher, focusing on early years and key stage 1. I have been a reception teacher for the last 4 years and previously a year 2 teacher for 8 years. Being a reception teacher allows you to be part of the children's important early development, helping them with communication, social interactions and learning through play. It gives me the opportunity to share my guitar playing, love of music and creativity. It is a fascinating and very rewarding environment to be a part of.

Can you share a memorable moment or a funny story from your classroom?

There have been so many moments in my teaching career and each one is so special. One memorable moment that comes to mind is when we perform our Cultural Dance every year at Strand Infants. I think I must have danced at least 14 or 15 different dances from different countries. One year, we retold a medley of Danish stories based on Hans Christian Anderson stories, and for some reason, the children had paper mache seagull heads. But I think my favourite so far was this year, where my reception class performed an amazing Rock n Roll dance inspired by Elvis Presley. The children were amazing and had so much fun doing it.

What's one toy or activity you secretly love as much as the kids?

Not really that much of a secret, as toys are great and I haven't really grown up enough to stop, but I grew up loving Star Wars and Lego…and I still do! My job gives me the opportunity to share my love of toys and stories.

Which storybook character do you relate to the most and why?

There are so many to choose from, but one character that has always been a favourite is the dad character in 'Funny Bones' by Allan Ahlberg. They are such great books and funny stories of the skeleton family having fun and looking after each other and always managing to make it home safe and sound.

How do you stay inspired and motivated in a role that demands so much emotionally and physically?

I work in an amazing school and with so many exceptionally skilled and experienced people. Every day is so demanding for us all in so many different ways, and in return, gives us so many rewarding moments. It is this environment that keeps me motivated. Every day is literally a school day, the colleagues in every single role I work with in the school help keep me inspired and motivated.

Sometimes the quick chats in the staffroom whilst having tea are the most important… it helps you stay connected with each other and get through the day and onto the next.

What do you hope children remember about you when they grow up?

I hope the children remember the happy and fun time they had when in my class. They'll most likely remember my guitar playing and all the songs we sing.

ROOTED IN COMMUNITY, DRIVEN BY EXCELLENCE

Tucked away in the heart of Chiswick, Orchard House School is quietly rewriting the rulebook on what a modern preparatory education should feel like. At its helm is Henrietta Adams, a headteacher whose warmth, clarity, and unshakable belief in children shape every corner of school life. Now in her second year leading the school and over a decade as part of the education community in Chiswick, Henrietta brings a powerful blend of tradition, innovation, and heart to this thriving school.

An Orchard House education: inclusive, ambitious, joyful

Spend a day at Orchard House and you’ll feel it immediately: the school is alive with energy, music, and purpose. From the first notes of a Year 1 soloist performing in front of an audience of 400 people at assembly, to the lively lunchtime debates in philosophy club, Orchard House pulses with confidence and joy. For Henrietta, this isn’t a happy accident - it’s a deliberate culture, built on strong relationships, high expectations, and boundless opportunity.

“We believe in children being seen, heard, and celebrated, ” she explains. “Orchard House is inclusive, non-selective and deeply ambitious. We have a diverse, international community that enriches every part of our school. Our teachers are passionate about finding each child’s strengths whether it’s music, running, maths or drama, and helping them flourish.”

From the youngest pupils to the oldest, there is a sense that every child matters, and that they are being known and nurtured by a team of staff who are both experts and enthusiasts.

Structure, support, and a no-phone policy

Orchard House is a school where traditional values and forward-thinking methods meet. Henrietta is a firm believer in structured learning, clear boundaries, and the importance of presence both physical and emotional.

The Learning Orchard, the school’s bespoke curriculum, takes the best of traditional British education and preparation for 11+ exams, and supercharges it with STEM, the arts, oracy and philosophy to create confident, thoughtful and articulate pupils. Every subject, lesson, and activity is rooted in the guiding principles of world readiness, powerful knowledge, holistic learning and leadership.

The Learning Orchard curriculum is now supplemented with the High Performance Learning (HPL) framework. HPL empowers teachers to foster deeper thinking, resilience, and teamwork, enabling

every child to achieve their full potential, supported by regular assessments and responsive teaching strategies like ‘purple pen’ feedback time.

Pastoral care that listens and responds

Pastoral care is personal and proactive at Orchard House. Every child completes a well-being questionnaire each term that forms the basis of an individual pastoral plan, helping staff identify and address issues early. Each child has an individual pastoral plan, and mental health support is available not just for pupils, but for staff too.

“Kindness is one of our core values,” Henrietta says. “It starts with how we treat each other - as colleagues, as teachers and as role models for the children.”

Looking ahead

There are challenges, of course - the never-ending juggle of managing a large staff, hundreds of families and the various enthusiasms of young children. But Henrietta is undaunted. “You can see how effective an Orchard House School education is by the way our children come to school each day - happy, smiling and ready to learn - and of course, through the quality of our exam results and the number and wide range of scholarships our pupils receive.”

How My Daughter’s Start in School Marked a Whole New Chapter for Me Too

As the new school year approaches, I find myself reflecting on the past 12 months with a heart full of gratitude, memories, and a healthy dose of exhaustion. The last school year has been one of many firsts - my daughter's first day at school, her first school trip, her first sports day, and many more. These were not just her firsts, but mine as well, as a first-time school mum navigating this exciting new world.

Reception was a big deal. It's when children begin their journey into education, friendships, and independence. My daughter walked through those school gates, eyes wide open with curiosity and excitement, and maybe a little fear and a "funny feeling in the tummy". And I, too, stepped into something new - this journey of being a "school mum." As it turns out, she handled her transition better than I did more than once, and I couldn't be prouder of her or more humbled myself.

The reception year has been full of recitals, assemblies, sports days, and school trips. Each event was a milestone, not just for the children performing, but for the parents cheering them on from the sidelines, with cameras ready to capture these precious moments, hearts full of pride and sometimes tears in the eyes. It wasn't always easy, with juggling work and emotions, but it was always worth it.

cardigans and hair clips, misplaced notebooks and water bottles, and stories of pen-covered uniforms. We find reassurance in each other's confessions about hard mornings, tantrums, and bedtime chaos.

The school provides an excellent structure and support, but behind all those firsts, there was an incredible network of parents quietly making everything run smoothly for everyone. So, dear parents, I thank you.

Thank you to the mums who sent those timely WhatsApp reminders. To the parents with older children who always explained the logistics of school performances and dress-up days. To the ones who organised teacher gifts and donations. To the ones who stepped in on trips and volunteered without hesitation. To the parents who showed up again and again, for their kids and for others.

I've come to see that parenting through the school years is definitely a communal experience. We all bring our own stories and ways of doing things, and yet, we find common ground. We bond over missing

The year also brought moments just for us parents. I went out with other mums for the first time, no children. It felt nice to connect beyond the school gates. We spoke mostly about our little ones, and it was comforting to learn that behind every front door was the same chaos: mess, meltdowns, cuddles, doubts, and love. Another time, we went to a brilliant bingo night, where we all got so competitive, and to a school gala, where we dressed up, danced, and remembered who we were beyond our parenting roles.

And perhaps the most beautiful part? It was watching our children grow and learn beyond the schoolwork. Seeing them build friendships, learn to negotiate and share, hearing them giggle over things we no longer understand, or hearing my daughter talk about a boy in her class (yes, already!). It reminded me how quickly time passes and how much they (and we) are growing. This journey isn't perfect. It's actually very messy, noisy, and full of emotion. It is

overwhelming, but also filled with magic, connection, and joy. We've all had our share of tough days, but it's these challenges that make the victories even sweeter.

So, to every parent reading this: Whether this was your first year or your fifth, whether you were part of the PTA or simply showing up, you’ve made a difference. You’ve supported, juggled a million things, and loved fiercely.

Here’s to a new school year filled with growth, laughter, and just the right amount of organised chaos. May we continue to show up for our children and for each other. May we celebrate the little wins, support one another through the tough days, and

SCHOOL OPEN DAYS: WHAT TO LOOK FOR

As a parent, one of the most significant decisions you face is selecting the right school or nursery for your child. And while prospectuses and websites can tell you a lot, nothing compares to visiting in person.

Open days give you the chance to see the classrooms in action, explore facilities, and get a real feel for the atmosphere. You’ll quickly pick up on things that a brochure can’t capture, like how happy and engaged the children seem, or how warmly the staff welcome you.

Before attending, it’s worth having a clear idea of your priorities, for example, location, curriculum, class sizes, extracurricular options, and teaching style, so you can focus on what matters most to your family.

When visiting on an open day, ask how the school supports different learning styles, manages behaviour, and keeps parents informed. Discover the outdoor time, facilities for sports, arts, and technology, as well as how they facilitate key transitions between stages. These insights will help you see how well the school fits your child’s needs.

Don’t forget the deadlines. Many schools and nurseries have strict application cut-off dates, often months before the start of the academic year. Some also require you to register your interest early to secure a place. Check these dates well in advance and set reminders - you don’t want to find the perfect spot only to miss the deadline.

THE POWER OF MUSIC IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT

And Why Piano is Leading the Way

In this issue, we turn our attention to another powerful developmental force that supports children's growth: music. Backed by growing research, music education has been shown to enhance brain development, emotional intelligence, coordination, and confidence. It's a fullspectrum activity that nurtures children in ways that are as deep as they are delightful.

Music Builds Smarter Brains

Engaging with music, especially learning to play an instrument or sing, activates nearly every area of the brain at once. This neural workout boosts critical thinking, memory, and language skills.

A long-term study by the University of Southern California's Brain and Creativity Institute has demonstrated that music training has a significant impact on brain development in children. Now in its fourth year, the research reveals that children who receive regular music instruction demonstrate stronger auditory processing abilities, including better pitch perception and production, as well as more advanced development of the brain's auditory pathways.

Additionally, these children show improvements in cognitive functions, including working memory and self-control, which is supported by increased activity in the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for executive functions such as attention and decision-making.

And it's not just about hearing and rhythm. Learning music strengthens the brain's executive function. That means better attention control, impulse regulation, and problem-solving, all of which are key to academic success.

The Magic of Piano

Among all instruments, the piano stands out as one of the most developmentally rich choices for children. Its layout

and technique require both hands to move independently yet in harmony, strengthening bilateral coordination and stimulating activity across both hemispheres of the brain.

From a physical point of view, learning the piano is a gentle but effective workout for the hands and arms. It builds finger strength, dexterity, and flexibility, which support not only fine motor skills but also the endurance needed for writing, drawing, and other manual activities. The controlled pressure required to produce different dynamics, from soft, flowing melodies to bold, powerful chords, helps children develop refined muscular control and a sense of physical nuance.

Emotionally, the piano offers a uniquely expressive outlet. Because it can convey such a wide range of tones and dynamics, children can channel their feelings into sound — from joy and excitement to reflection and calm. This form of selfexpression can be deeply therapeutic, helping children process emotions they might not yet be able to verbalise. Over time, the process of learning, practising, and performing pieces fosters resilience and perseverance, as they experience the satisfaction of overcoming challenges and the pride of sharing their music with others.

The piano's versatility also supports creative confidence. Children can explore classical pieces, pop songs, improvisation, and even compose their own melodies, making it a lifelong companion in both structured learning and free play. Combined with its visual layout — which helps beginners

quickly connect what they hear with what they see and play — the piano becomes not just an instrument, but a bridge between mind, body, and heart.

Why Music Matters

Music education is a gateway to cognitive, emotional, and physical development. Whether it's learning to play the guitar or singing silly songs at home, encouraging your child's musical journey could be one of the most impactful decisions you make for their future.
