It’s no secret, Aussies love a good beach, and we have more than our fair share of charming seaside towns. But here in the Northern Rivers, the meandering creeks and rivers add a whole new dimension to the coastal experience, and Kingscliff’s sparkling, aqua hued Cudgen Creek is certainly one of the most picturesque. Throw in surf breaks, leafy cycle tracks, and a flourishing food scene – not to mention proximity to the Gold Coast and lush Tweed hinterland - and Kingscliff is a great place to be this summer.

Watersports Guru

History Drawn to the abundant sea life, vibrant creek, and verdant volcanic earth of Cudgen (which means red), the Coodjingburra clan arrived in the region more than 10,000 years ago. Cultivating a deep connection to the land and sea, the community thrived, and Cudgen Headland – which straddles the creek and the sea – became an important meeting place, with numerous middens providing testament to fine fishing grounds and frequent corroborees.

By the 1800s, the fertile soil had drawn colonial settlers, and was colourfully described in an article in the Brisbane Courier in 1882, as resembling “well roasted and ground coffee, in which almost all semi tropical vegetation may be seen luxuriating.” Cane sugar was the crop of choice, but it was the 20th century discovery of rutile and zircon in the fine white sand and the advent of sand mining that changed the face of Cudgen Headland (renamed Kingscliff in 1927) forever. By the 1950s the foundations of the modern-day town had been laid, catering to both mine workers and to the increasing numbers of holiday makers who set up camp along the foreshore. Building restrictions kept things low key and low rise, and to this day Marine Parade flanked in pandanus and coastal banksia maintains its independent spirit and provides a laidback alternative to the hustle and bustle of the Gold Coast, for visitors and inhabitants alike.

Play At high tide on a sunny day, the shimmering, crystal clear water of Cudgen Creek is a veritable paradise - described as ‘the lifeblood of Kingscliff,’ by longtime local, Tim Jack Adams, founder of Watersports Guru. “I would say that many in our community will rotate their working day or days off around getting a high tide swim or paddle in the creek. If you’re a water person, you can paddle up the nine-kilometre creek, go for a surf and then free dive all in one day. To me that’s phenomenal,” he adds. For a memorable morning on the water, sign up for Tim’s much-loved ‘Snorkel with the Turtles’ tour to nearby Cook Island. Traditionally named Jungarra Ngarrian, which translates as ceremonial place of pelicans/birds, the rocky island is popular with nesting birds; while the nutrient-dense water that laps its craggy shore is a marine reserve, home to a permanent colony of Green, Hawksbill & Loggerhead Turtles. Besides getting up close and personal with curious turtles, you will also spot wobbegongs, the occasional leopard shark, playful dolphins, and if you are lucky, migrating whales from June to October.

Prefer to keep your feet on terra firma?

Take a stroll northward to Dreamtime Beach, then follow the track through the

pandanus groves to the historic lighthouse and spectacular volcanic headland with its distinctive hexagonal basalt columns.

Or wander south to Salt Village with its collection of relaxed cafés, outdoor restaurants, and day spas. Cruising along the extensive cycle tracks is another fabulous way to explore and you can hire bicycles (including beach cruisers) from Kingscliff Cycle Centre.

Eat and Drink A focal part of the community, Cudgen Headland SLSC was established in 1922.

Right on the beach, and surrounded by leafy recreation and picnic areas, Zinc Café is a great spot to grab a coffee and a fresh baked muffin after a morning swim. Or head upstairs to the restaurant for a more substantial meal and live music on Sundays.

Café culture is flourishing in Kingscliff. Get your refreshing iced brews and a gourmet toastie or house made treat from the friendly team at The Brew & Bake Co. (they even have doggie treats for your pooch while you’re waiting), or head to Choux Box for beautifully decorated cakes, friands and decadent caramel slices, with mini versions available, so you don’t feel too naughty.

Mockingbird Café, with its sunny garden fringed in marigolds is a long-time fave with the locals, perfect for a casual breakfast or

lunch. There’s also plenty of international flavours to discover, from Zanzibar’s Moroccan fare served in atmospheric surrounds, to spicy Indian curries at Kahani Indian Restaurant, fragrant Nepalese dishes at Kathmandu Kitchen, and great veggie fare at Govindas.

New to town this year, Worst Burgers was an instant hit from the day it opened, with a huge range of fully loaded burgers with all the trimmings. While long standing Finns at Salt Village, is the best bet for delicious local seafood. For live music and a drink, head to the Kingscliff Tavern or Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club. But for something more intimate, try Pot and Pint, or stock up on fine wines and gourmet deli-style treats at Emmanuel’s Wineshop.

Shop Kingscliff Lions Club Beach Market (second and fourth Saturday of each month) is a much-loved community event with a buzzing vibe, fresh local produce, silver and gemstone jewellery, clothing and arts and crafts. Marine Parade is also home to interesting independent retailers and boutiques. Check out Paradise Living Co., Shambhala and Oxley and Moss – for unique homeware and gifts. And get your summer beachwear essentials at Kingscliff Surf Shop or Breathe.

From Neighbours to the Bay - that’s Byron Bay - life is looking a little sunnier these days for actor, author, podcaster, and activist Madeleine West.

Based in the Northern Rivers, on Bundjalung Arakwal country, since 2016, West has cemented herself as a beloved and respected part of the community here. “If you want to be part of a community you have to be in the community. You can’t buy, razzle dazzle or demand your way in. That’s not what the Northern Rivers is all about.”

It’s a full house and full schedule for this single mum of six, who is known less for her acting roles around these parts and more for her social and environmental advocacy. West moved here with her family already well versed in regional living; she was raised in Woodend, country Victoria, at the foot of the famed Hanging Rock - although her heart for civic engagement and deep sense of justice eventually called her to Melbourne to pursue a law degree. She may have side-stepped into an acting career along the way, but it’s clear her blood runs thick with altruism.

“I worked for a year in an asylum seeker resource centre. I’ve worked with kids on the street, with the homeless, in refuges, and I know that kindness is priceless. People have value no matter who they are and are deserving of respect, understanding and empathy. If we can give generously and strive to each play a small part in rethreading the fabric of society, it lifts the vibration and makes the world a better place”.

No stranger to trauma and challenge, West has come through her own personal hardships with the fierce determination to use her voice for the benefit of others. A gifted and articulate storyteller, podcasting has become a natural complement to her acting career and a wonderful vehicle for awareness and change making. From Nova’s Invisible Heroes to Restart – on Mamamia’s ever-popular women’s media platform – which talks on topics from divorce to health to making friends in your 40’s, West’s ability to home in on themes that resonate, whilst being open and vulnerable about her own experiences, has earnt her a loyal following.

But it’s her latest eight-part podcast, Predatory, with former detective Gary Jubelin, that sees West at her most raw and powerful yet.

Bringing attention to child sexual abuse, she is using her own lived experience to campaign for other victims. “I want to raise awareness by stepping forward as a victim” she says. “I want to remove the stigma from victims and demonstrate that we aren’t broken people.

The shame doesn’t belong to us, it belongs to the predator. We can use our stories to reclaim our power.”

A passionate advocate for the safety and protection of children, women and abuse survivors, West is heavily involved in several agencies pushing for national reform: Project Paradigm – working towards ending child exploitation; Safe on Social – which works directly with youth and parents to empower a safer online experience; and Got Your Back Sista – a charity which aims to empower women who have escaped the trauma of family violence.

Whether taking part in a fun-run for awareness, speaking in schools and to parenting groups across the region, or lobbying Parliament, West wants to be part of the solution when it comes to the exploitation and abuse of our most vulnerable.

And, when she’s not busy doing all that, West is also agitating for change as an environmentalist. Proud spokesman and co-ordinator for ReForest Now – a non-profit organisation working to rewild Australia through conservation, the planting of native trees and bush regeneration - you’ll often find West, in her ‘spare time’, out planting trees in the Northern Rivers rainforest. “I realised at a very young age 11

that our wilderness is a living, breathing being” she says. “We need to change our relationship with the earth. The planet is not under our dictatorship, it is like a space we rent and if we don’t treat it right, we don’t get to stay.”

She may be the wearer of many hats, but as the mum of a large brood, multi-tasking comes with the territory – and I’d say there’s none more capable of the juggle. “I do know when to switch off and say no!” she laughs. Refilling her tank usually involves time in Mother Nature – spending the day at Bruns river with her kids or taking a hike to one of the glorious Northern Rivers’ waterfalls and rockpools.

“I WORKED FOR A YEAR IN AN ASYLUM SEEKER RESOURCE CENTRE. I’VE WORKED WITH KIDS ON THE STREET, WITH THE HOMELESS, IN REFUGES, AND I KNOW THAT KINDNESS IS PRICELESS." So, what’s next for Madeleine West? She’s off to do a movie of course. “I still love acting” she smiles. “As parents we give up a lot of ourselves for our kids, it’s natural when they are young, but at this point, it’s also good for them to see mum doing what she loves.

They may grumble about me not being on the canteen, but in the long run I hope they take away a bigger message. You can still forge time for yourself, chase your passions and pursue the things that light you up”.

It seems, in finding the right balance in it all, West has also found happiness. “I felt called to this region. I came here to invest in something more holistic. Not to ‘be someone’, and not with the perception of changing things. Home is where you visualise the best version of yourself. Here, I am surrounded by people I adore, I’m healthier than I’ve ever been, and I’m content to be perfectly imperfect - like all of us.”

While women have been riding waves for generations, the number of women surfers has soared in recent years and they aren’t just hanging ten, they are hanging tenaciously, carving up the surf scene with style, skill, and grace.

Surfing has always been a quintessential part of Australian coastal culture, but the days when the line-up was just a sea of blokes in board shorts are long gone.

The growth of women's surfing in recent years has been phenomenal, with more and more women taking up the sport, according to Surfing Australia. Women are also pushing the boundaries of what was once thought possible for female surfers, redefining the sport by proving that style and grace can coexist with power and skill.

Take the Northern Rivers’ own, two-times World Champion, Tyler Wright, and record holding eight-times World Champion Stephanie Gilmore, both of whom have used their voices to push for surfing to be more inclusive and progressive. A passionate advocate for empowering women through surfing, Gilmore helped lead the way to the WSL’s announcement of equal prize money on the professional circuit in 2018.

“Top female surfers have made it fairer and more commonplace for women on the surfing scene, especially for young girls who look up to those pro female surfers,” says Kirsten Tremlett, who hosts Women’s Surf and Yoga retreats in Byron Bay. “I think it’s great that there's a lot more females feeling confident about being out there with the guys, as it is still a very maledominated domain.”

Describing the showcase of women’s surfing as “light years away from the era” she grew up in, Sally Miller, team manager for Byron Bay Boardriders at the event says, “When I was growing up in Kiama, I would have loved to have so many girls to surf with. Girls were always accepted by the local surfing community but not celebrated, and it was amazing to have the opportunity to share the experience and supportive space within the community.”

“Women are finally finding a place in the line-up they feel comfortable with,” adds Belén Alvarez Kimble, Director of Salty Girls Surf School who believes that surfing has become much more accessible for women, with everything from wax to

The surf industry has also opened its doors wider, with more female focused brands, sponsors, competitions, and opportunities than ever before. In June 2023, Kingscliff hosted Surfing Australia’s inaugural Seas the Day Festival, the world’s biggest female participation surf festival, which saw 200 women and girls competing in a tag team contest. Taking place over two days, a crowd of 12,000 gathered to join in free

wetsuits and surfboards, now catered for the female surfer. Belén, who started the Cabarita-based surf school in 2008, is just as passionate about creating opportunities for women as she is about surfing. “I love seeing women jumping in a lesson because they have always wanted to, but never felt comfortable – or it was just never the right time in their lives; so they get to tick something from their bucket list.” Her thoughts on the local women’s surf scene? “We are water people in the Northern Rivers, and women surfers here have a very gentle soft way about them; a lot of women love surfing Cabarita because it’s a gentle wave and very conducive to that style.” She adds, “Because we're a smaller coastal community, everyone kind of knows everybody and we’re just having fun, and not having to deal with the bigger crowds at some of the point breaks up and down the coast. I think too, in general, when women are in the water together there’s always a beautiful energy. We’re not quiet and grumpy, we bring out the fun and the giggling and the joy, rather than the seriousness of it.”

HELP AT HAND Regional living is infused, naturally, with a resilient community spirit. Alert to the impact the elements have on our natural surrounds, we are a people who rise in times of difficulty and crisis. But it’s easy not to think about it until the emergency is on our doorstep. A time when our emergency services (often run by volunteers and donations) are stretched by lack of funds or available help. Prevention is better than a cure they say, so how can we become part of the solution as El Niño arrives for a long, hot summer? Here’s a little refresher on who we can turn to, where we can donate, and how we can get involved now, to help prepare for times of emergency.

NSW RURAL FIRE SERVICE (NSW RFS) The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is the lead combat agency for bush fires in NSW. The service aims to reduce the likelihood and consequence of fires occurring. This involves risk management programs to reduce bush fire hazards and fire ignitions, as well as the development of regulations for bush fire prone areas. In addition to firefighting, prevention, and rescue, the NSW RFS works closely with other agencies to respond to a range of emergencies - including motor vehicle accidents, and storms that occur within rural fire districts. The NSW RFS is the world’s largest volunteer fire service, with over 72,000 members who provide fire and emergency services to more than 95% of the state.

The NSW RFS and Brigade Donations Fund support volunteer brigades and all proceeds assist in community activities, training and education – which is provided free to all members. Many rural brigades also hold fundraising activities and community events – like open days, BBQs and coin collection – and are worthy events to support.

NSW STATE EMERGENCY SERVICE (SES) The ‘SES’ is a volunteer-based, emergency and rescue service dedicated to assisting the community and proving support in times of need. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, the organisation's trained rescuers support the full-time emergency services during major disasters and assist when they are performing major operations. Although mostly responsible for flood and storm emergencies, the SES also provide the majority of general rescue effort in rural areas – including, road accident rescue, vertical rescue and bush search and rescue. GPS: MacGregor Street, Suffolk Park Amenities: On street parking; no public toilets/showers; no bins For the adventurous family, pack a picnic and head off to explore the dark waters of the Tea Tree Lake, nestled behind Byron’s Tallows Beach. Park on MacGregor Street in Suffolk Park and head onto the beach. From there, walk south towards Broken Head for about 500m until you find a small river. Follow that river inland and you will discover the Tea Tree Lakes, with their distinctive dark water similar to its more famous cousin, Lake Ainsworth in Lennox Head. There is plenty of sand to settle on and the water is calm.

The tea trees that leach tannins into the water and turn it the colour of cola crowd the lake’s edge and it’s truly serene – there is not a building in sight. Tea tree is known for its antiseptic quality and is used to treat skin conditions like acne and eczema so a dip here is like a free beauty treatment for the whole family.

The walk down to Killen starts on an open, flat path and quickly turns into a steep scramble – but it is only 330m which is manageable for even the littlest of legs. Emerging from the forest, the waterfalls and the pool below appear like something from a fairytale. Depending on the time of year, the falls can be a powerful tumble or a whispering trickle. Behind them is something truly special - a cave, hidden behind the waterfall to explore. Ancient fig trees crowd the pool’s edge, making it refreshingly cool even on the hottest summer days. To keep the adventure going, a little further downstream is another swimming pool to venture into.

Don’t forget: footwear like sandals/thongs to walk easily on rocks; boards/rings for the kids to float on to avoid awkwardly navigating over large submerged rocks in shallow water; thick towels/ cushions to sit comfortably on the rocks (there isn’t any grass/soft sitting option); wetsuits as the water can be chilly

Cudgera Creek GPS: Hastings Point Foreshore (on Tweed Coast Rd) Amenities: Public carpark, public toilets (but they are a trek from the playground); bins With the beach to the east and a national park to the west, the mouth of Cudgera Creek at Hastings Point is a pretty spot that offers calm waters for little ones (including a lot of fun shallow pools at low tide) but with the promise of adventure for older kids.

A swim across the creek on the eastern side of the bridge offers sand dunes to roll down. Water can be fast moving when the tides are changing, so a body board for older ones offers some low-level water rafting style adrenaline, and, for the truly brave, a jump off the bridge is a rite of passage (just make sure the tide is high and there are adult spotters in the water).

Torakina Beach GPS: Torakina Beach, Brunswick Heads Amenities: Public parking; public toilets; showers While Simpsons Creek is a summer favourite in Bruns, with older kids jumping off Brunswick Heads Bridge, the real gem is Torakina Beach. Just east of the bridge, this is where Simpsons Creek meets the Brunswick River as it flows into the sea. The gentle waves that lap the sand are perfect for tiny groms just starting out on their first body boards. The crystal-clear water and sea walls on both sides offer great snorkelling for beginners but be mindful of fast flowing tides. There is plenty of shade at the back of the beach too, but spots are snapped up fast as Torkina is only about 150m long.

Currumbin Rock Pools (and Cougal Cascade) GPS: Currumbin Creek Rock Pools; Cougal Cascade Car Park Amenities: Public parking; public toilets; Currumbin Rock Pools also has a public BBQ, picnic tables and shelters and showers Nestled in the lush Currumbin Valley, just a short hop across the border into Queensland, is the Currumbin Rock Pools. There are gentle falls and pools to play in, rocks to jump off and plenty of shallow water for paddling. A large grassy area, bordered by figs and camphor laurels, offers shade and sun options, to lay out a picnic blanket around the main pool’s edge. Beware of the eels that can become territorial and, although harmless, they are known to nip. To escape the summer crowds and for a bit more nature and adventure, continue west along Currumbin Creek Road to Cougal Cascades. Here, a paved walkway follows the creek, with plenty of pools to choose from, logs to clamber over and falls to slide down.

Whether you are sober curious, a non-drinker, temporarily abstaining or embracing the mindful drinking trend, there are more ways to satiate your thirst than sipping sugary soft drinks and garish mocktails. We peek at what’s being handcrafted, infused, and distilled sans alcohol on the Northern Rivers, so you can enjoy a premium drinking experience minus the hangover.

Once upon a time in Australia, not ‘drinking’ meant sipping calorie laden soft drinks and getting a whole lot of stick from your mates. But recent years have seen a seismic shift in our drinking habits, with low and no alcohol drinks soaring in popularity, and expected to grow 31% in volume in the period 2020 – 2024. Here in the creative hotbed that is the Northern Rivers, savvy brewers, distillers, and beverage makers are heeding the call of health-conscious consumers.

“With the rising consumption of non-alcoholic beverages, naturally people are going to start searching for some sort of effect to elevate their drinking experience,” says Tom Wooley, CEO of Byron-based Organica Beverage Co. Their newly launched brand, Dayse, co-founded by surfers Jack Freestone and Alana Blanchard, is on a mission to shape the future of social drinking, by replacing the need for alcohol without losing the good times. Take their Functional Spritzer range, tailored to have a positive effect on the mind and body by creating what’s called a functional buzz. Drinks with names like Awaken and Easing are infused with mood enhancing adaptogens – like gingko, passionflower and turmeric root, and nootropics (cognitive enhancers) which create an elevating effect, restore balance, and encourage calmness.

As well as being a great product, Tom Wooley attributes the start-up brand’s success to, "The Northern Rivers community really backing small local businesses, plus, a lot of people here are really passionate about health & wellness, and this is a community that understands the benefits of not drinking alcohol too often."

Unable to find a drink that she could mix, with a great taste that was shelf-stable and had no artificial preservatives, she set out to create her own. Sourcing natural ingredients from Australian suppliers, it’s handcrafted from 15 fruits, spices and herbs and can be drunk alone, or mixed into healthy mocktails, or lower ABV cocktails. “Research shows that more Australians are shifting towards mindful drinking,” says Kate. “People who buy and drink non-alcoholic drinks, are also drinking alcohol, so we are creating a family of products for drinkers, non-drinkers and people who want to drink less."

How about no alcohol beers some of you may ask. Bridging the gap between drinking and not drinking, NAPA (Non Alc Pacific Ale) from Gold Coast based Hiatus Beers, is all the flavour – think refreshing citrus and tropical fruit bursts – minus the hangover.

“Hiatus Beers is for anyone who currently drinks non-alcoholic beer or is looking to take a break from alcohol—for a day, a week, a month, or just the next round,” explain co-founders and longstanding insiders, Jules Ryan, Nic Sandery and Nick Detmold.

“Cracking open a crisp, light lager at the beach is part of the trip for many people. But as more folks are reducing or abstaining from alcohol, the beverage space has opened opportunities for low and no-ABV alternatives to provide a tasty stand-in for traditional, boozy libations,” they add.

With so much interest in not drinking you would almost think someone would open a booze-free bottle-o. Oh, hang on, someone has. Sunnyboy Cellars in Byron Bay opened earlier this year, with wives, Ella Bryant and Bella Mayne, jumping in to fill the gap, with a carefully curated selection of alcohol-free wines, bubbles, aperitifs, beers and spirits, including all the brands above.

I have walked, cycled, driven, and been driven to the pub, but arriving on horseback via a trail through the lush tea tree forest must go down as my most memorable entrance. “We refer pretty loosely to the pub,” says founder of Zephyr Horses, Kate Noller, on their pub tours, “but the North Byron Hotel is so much more than that. The venue and the vibe is amazing, then there’s the food; I think a lot of people are really surprised by how good it is.”

My Sunday Brunch Tour starts at the atmospheric Zephyr Horses ranch, on the edge of a tea tree lake in North Byron. I am paired with Bobby, a gorgeous chestnut mare who is thankfully quite chilled, as I haven’t been on a horse for years, and I soon settle into that distinctive bouncy rhythm that comes with riding a four-legged creature. It’s quiet in the forest, but for the crunch of leaves under hooved feet, the wind whipping through the tree tops, and the sound of crashing waves in the distance. The trail leads through patches of littoral rainforest and dense sub-tropical tea tree forest carpeted with bright green bracken and native grasses, before suddenly emerging in bright sunlight just behind the hotel. We cause a bit of a stir as we tether our horses to the rails and take a seat in the tropical garden that brims with vibrant edible flowers, continental herbs, chilli bushes and passionfruit vines.

“A pub tour is a great way to connect with nature in Byron Bay – it makes you understand why people are so passionate about the land,” says Jedd Rifai, Licensee of North Byron Hotel. It’s also a perfect fit with the creative menu that focusses on locally sourced ingredients. Café style brunch dishes include a Brookfarm Granola Bowl, Bacon & Egg Burger (with free range eggs from up the road), and Ricotta Hotcakes with whipped honey ricotta, seasonal fruit and agave syrup. I opt for a tasty and nutritious Barefoot Bowl, packed with broccolini, greens (freshly plucked from the garden), seeds and nuts, topped with perfectly poached local eggs and zaatar.

Sipping my coffee, I look around to see families, young couples with their dogs, a group of women celebrating a birthday, and our horses munching contently on hay. Kate is right, it’s much more than a pub.

Since taking over North Byron Hotel two years ago, Jedd has been on a mission to transform the venue into a communal meeting place; and there’s something for everyone, including Kids Club during summer holidays, generous happy hours, and live DJs on Friday and Saturday nights for a more up for it crowd. The fire pit in the centre of the flourishing garden also sets the scene for monthly Open Sky Barbecues in collaboration with a local brewery or distillery, with offerings like wood roasted kingfish, local king prawns and porchetta.

Brunch over, we ride back into the sun dappled forest, our departure from the pub as memorable as our arrival. The Locale Dine & Vine group is a small collective of local food enthusiasts dedicated to exploring the hidden culinary treasures nestled within the picturesque Northern Rivers region. This time we dined at the ever-socharming Taverna restaurant in the small beachside town of Kingscliff.

Taverna is a boutique Greek-inspired restaurant on Kingscliff's Marine Parade. Its whitewashed cottage, adorned with peppermint awnings, and lush overhanging bougainvillea exude coastal ‘Greek Island’ charm. With just 60 seats, Taverna offers an intimate setting for leisurely lunches, romantic dinners, or beachside cocktails.

During our visit, Dine & Vine members enjoyed Taverna's generous banquet menu while soaking in the unique views of Kingscliff Beach. What truly distinguishes Taverna is its commitment to fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Their menu artfully combines Greek flavours with regional produce, resulting in a comforting yet innovative culinary experience. We indulged in the daily 5-course feasting banquet over a delightful 2-hour dining period. Each dish showcased the best of the season and Greek cuisine. The table favourite was the Market-fresh Whitefish with Eggplant Puree, Confit Tomatoes, and Baby Capers. A selection of wines, including the Papaginnakos 'Old Vines' Savatiano from Greece, enhanced our dining experience.

Undoubtedly, the Slow-Roasted Lamb Shoulder, bathed in red wine jus and infused with rosemary, was the evening's showstopper. It paid homage to Greek culinary traditions and was served with fried potatoes adorned with fresh herbs and feta.

Taverna crafts an experience that beautifully blends Greek culinary heritage with regional flavours. Our recent dining experience was an absolute delight, leaving us eager to return to this alluring beachfront haven for another unforgettable gastronomic journey..

Following a rough period of grief and Covid border hopping, Skye stopped in at a coffee cart and fell in love. “I honestly took a photo of it, stuck it on my wall and I just thought, ‘I don’t know how, but this has to happen in my life’,” Skye says. “A few weeks later, a girlfriend of mine had been talking to this fella at a barbeque and he was looking for someone to run a cart. It was actually crazy magic.” Now single-handedly serving CWA-inspired sweet treats (including the mandatory scones, of course), topped toast and smoothies, along with coffees, Skye has plans to host regular music and market nights and expand the al fresco garden.

The Gin Experience, Murwillumbah “It’s hard to get people into a brick-and-mortar bar,” says Seth Baker, director of the Gin Experience. “If they aren’t going to come to us, we’ll go to them.” The idea of the Gin Experience came from his uncle, Kent Williams, who was looking for a post-Army career. “He thought, ‘How nice would it be to just have a lovely gin by the ocean – why isn’t that happening?’” The spark was there, and Seth, who had always loved working in hospitality, signed up. Originally born in Newcastle, the converted horse float migrated north about a year ago, and now travels to parties and festivals shaking up bespoke gin cocktails. “When you can get people together with food and drink it’s a beautiful thing,” Seth says.

But… why gin? “Gin is getting huge, there are so many more distilleries going on, it really is the talk of the town,” says Seth. “We try to utilise local small-batch distillers – including cordials, liqueurs and gins – to make delicious, fun drinks and bring a light-hearted experience.” The Gin Experience have now teamed up with a chef to offer a food option, from street eats to open-flame feasts.

With an ever-growing community of talented makers drawn to the Northern Rivers, there’s no shortage of locally designed jewellery to lust after. From the raw magnificence of semiprecious gems to the precision of solid gold metal work and the ethereal shimmer of Pāua shell, these local jewellers imbue their craft with diverse and distinct beauty.

Working only with ethically produced Pāua from New Zealand, Libby Pool’s (libbypool.com) pieces have a shimmering beauty akin to peering deeply into a sunlit rockpool. They feel entirely otherworldly, which is perhaps why Libby’s designs have caught the eye of filmmaker James Cameron for his fantastical, off-planet realm in Avatar. Libby translates the beauty of nature into her jewellery. It may be a cluster of water droplets or the stem of a wattle tree, but she imagines each adornment as a cascade of shells resting on the wearer’s collarbone.

New Zealand-born and self-taught in her craft, Libby found herself in New Brighton with her backpack and rescue dog 25 years ago and has remained there ever since. “There’s definitely a strong correlation between living so close to the beach and working with sea shell,” says Libby. She prefers to let the shells guide her hand, rather than have a specific customer in mind when she creates, which ultimately leads to a wearer finding the piece that speaks just to them.

In a life spent living abroad and travelling the world, one of my most memorable journeys was a six- month road trip in a Poptop Campervan in 2000. Until then, I had never been that interested in travelling in Australia, but on that trip, I fell deeply in love with my country of birth. Incredible scenery aside, I was humbled by the extraordinary sense of space and absolute freedom of being truly ‘out there,’ and treading on earth that perhaps no person had ever trod on before. After the crowded, heavily cultivated landscapes of Europe, and the seething mass of humanity that is Asia, it was an utterly unique experience.

Naturally we gravitated to the Northern Rivers. There were lazy days lounging under the pandanus at Wategos, and fun nights at Main Beach car park in Byron, with drum circles, and plenty of camaraderie – sharing tips on where to sleep so the ranger wouldn’t find us. We discovered the Tweed Coast, and I have vivid memories of surfing the gentle waves off the headland at Cabarita, and a magical night watching the full moon rise over Hastings Point, lying in the back of the van with the door up. We camped in the rainforest in the shadow of Wollumbin and spent many an evening by a campfire under the stars at Rummery Park, near Minyon Falls.

Travelling with no fixed agenda, we explored the mighty wonders of the Great Ocean Road, drove through the unworldly landscapes of the opal fields, headed north through fiery red desert to Uluru, and onto the sweltering tip of Australia before making our way down the east coast. Following random dirt roads brought us to pristine beaches, while forays inland brought us to state forests and wildlife filled camping grounds. We met families in buses doing their round-the-country trips, backpackers from the UK in their Wicked Vans, Aussie surfers in clapped out Combis, and encountered many a grey nomad – they always knew the best places to camp. We were welcomed everywhere we went, and were never far from a shower block, public barbecue, or shady spot

Things are a little different these days of course, and free camping is banned in many places now, but there’s more people on the road than ever, and the spirit of van life is still strong – perhaps more so here in the Northern Rivers than anywhere else in Oz. Travelling with your own bed and kitchen isn’t just convenient and comfortable, it’s budget friendly and a chance to really connect with the landscape. Whether you want to wake to the sound of crashing waves and dive straight in the surf, or step out of bed and into a creek or rainforest, here’s some places to enjoy van life in our neck of the woods.

THE BEAUTY OF

IMPERFECTION “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished ” - Laozi / Lao Tzu 老子

Every morning the artist Hiromi Tango wakes early and spends that precious time as the sun is rising, in meditation. It is a practice she began documenting with intention during covid and, every day, her ‘dawn prayer’ is posted on her website - words to reach out into the hearts of her community - ‘Gently …’ always her signature greeting.

Tango is a petite woman of 47 years. She greets me, makeup free; her dark hair, woven with the odd strand of silver, is pulled into a simple ponytail – all intentional, she tells me later. She comes as she is. Only her Fingernails, painted in individual rainbow colours, hint at the kaleidoscope of creativity that pours from her. They are a remnant of her recent work - the delightful, and thought-provoking sculpture installation “YU KA 夢花 (Dream Flower)” - for the Festival of Brisbane. A vibrant interactive display of rainbow-coloured peonies, stemming from a circular rainbow bed. Representing ‘HOPE’, Tango’s intention was to “provide some sense of safe space - comfort, mindfulness, relaxation, joy, curiosity, and wonder … It is my sincere dream” she says, “that our society become safe, harmonious, peaceful, kind, and respectful place… where we are all able to express our authentic self without fear of judgment, to feel accepted, and that we belong.”

Significantly involved in the effort of Lismore’s communal recovery, she feels deeply about helping others and her front door is always open.

Her home - aptly named HIROMI HOTEL - is also her studio space and a place where she hosts open workshops and community engagement projects; everyone is welcome.

Despite her giving nature and idealism, Tango impresses on me that she is still learning that things don’t have to be perfect right now. Her daily mantra, taken from the Chinese philosopher – Laozi/ Lao Tzu 老子, “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished” – inspires her to look to nature, to slow down, be mindful, and to find beauty, growth, and abundance in imperfection.

“I am an idealist” she laughs. Be that as it may, Tango’s work resonates and has earnt her both national and international acclaim. An established, multi-awarded, multidisciplinary artist, she may reside here in the Northern Rivers, but her striking pieces, adorn the walls and spaces of cities, buildings, and galleries from Belgium, The Unites States and Dubai to South Korea, Singapore and Japan.

Japanese born, Tango has lived in Australia since 1998 when, at the age of 22, she followed her heart – in the form of renowned artist Craig Walsh – back to his home country. These days, Craig, Hiromi and their two children, reside on Bundjalung country, on an idyllic stretch of the Tweed River, close to where Craig grew up. “We moved here 10 years ago because we wanted to raise our children in a regional area.” Says Tango. “It reminds me of where I grew up… regional living is about community, generosity, sustainability and resilience.”

This sense of community and ‘giving’ is woven deeply in Tango.

Raised on Shikoku Island, Japan, within a very traditional community, she explains, “Culturally, where I come from, and particularly within my family, women were expected not to speak in the presence of men; instead, I watched my mother and grandmother and aunts grow food, cook, sew, and work together in a practice of communal living. Everything was shared and

Upfront about her own reality of living with anxiety and depression, Tango has spent over two decades exploring the intersection between art and mental health. Using her observations of nature to fuel her curiosity, she has, over the years, collaborated with numerous scientists, health professionals and research institutions, exploring how both nature and art can contribute to a positive mental wellbeing.

With many of her works centring around the theme of the ‘Healing Garden’, one could say that nature is intrinsic to the artist’s way of being and expressing herself. “Our connection with nature is key to connecting with ourselves” she observes. “Through my garden I learn about life. There is love and compassion, nurturing, and resilience in the soil. Each plant, each petal is different. The beauty is in the imperfection.”

Wabi Sabi philosophy – ‘to see the beauty in imperfection, appreciate simplicity, and accept that change is inevitable’- is in fact, an ideal Tango lives by and it plays a role in all her work. As does sustainability – whereby nothing is wasted, and everything is upcycled in some way. Tango’s method of creating often involves the meticulous process of weaving and wrapping using donated items of clothing, fabric, Perspex, wool, and wire. Even an old bicycle is taken apart and its pieces reused. Her neighbour, an electrician, has given her a tangled mess of frayed electrical wires, “look at this, it’s so pretty” she says. Although, her practice is multifarious and, as well as sculpture, also spans painting, drawing, photography, installation, poetry and performance.

Tango’s current commission is the stunning sculpture centrepiece - GARDEN (Healing Together) - at the new Tweed Valley Hospital in Northern New South Wales. Sitting pride of place at the hospital’s entrance, this vibrant installation of ocean and nature tones feels the perfect choice by an artist whose ethos centres around nature, healing, and hope.

Raised to communicate with non-verbal language, one gets the sense that Hiromi Tango has become the walking embodiment of her message, and the artwork she creates are her voice. The words she speaks to us are loud and clear and simple – “Gently...”

Kyle, how did you first become involved in the music scene, where did your journey begin?

I was 21, depressed, my partner had just given birth to our son Izaiah & we were living in our friend’s garage. The only thing I really knew how to do was work hard & write songs. I vowed to my newly born son that I would a. change my life around so I could be a better father and be someone worth looking up to, and b. get us out of the shitty living situation we’d found ourselves in. When you make a promise to someone you love more than life, you commit - so I bought a busking amp and started playing my music on the streets of Byron Bay. This is where it began and it’s what has brought me just about everything else good that came to my music career.

Your latest single, “Everything We Wanted” has been receiving great feedback. Can you tell us the story behind the song and what inspired you to create it?

I think we spend too much time focusing on the negative parts of ourselves and forget to really thank ourselves for the work we’ve done to be where and who we are now, so I wrote this song to remind myself (and others) to really appreciate what you’ve gone through to get to where you are now!

The collaboration with Kim Churchill on the track “Go Try Fall” is fantastic.

How did that partnership come

about, and what was it like working with him?

Kim and I have been fans of each other’s work for years and after a little surf together when he was up visiting the Northern Rivers, we decided we should make something together, the rest just fell into place.

Living in the Northern Rivers must have its perks. What do you love most about the area, and how does it fuel your creative energy?

Most definitely the surfing. I don’t really get creative ideas whilst surfing but the headspace after my surf always brings a lot of clarity.

How has the local music scene supported your growth as an artist?

Back when I first started busking, I was hitting the streets with other similar artist (Ziggy Alberts, Tay Oskee, Garrett Kato) and we pushed each other - a bit of healthy competition in a way, like who could sell the most CD’s or how many followers did you get tonight, ha!

Your participation in the We Are Alive Series must have been an incredible experience. How did it feel to be part of such a renowned music series in Australia?

It’s always a real pleasure to have a team put so much time and care into capturing your art, I was honoured to be asked to come and share.

What would you say was the highlight of the We Are Alive Event in Byron Bay, alongside Ottway the Label?

This would have to go down as one of my favourite Byron shows. To share music in a space where people really care about music is a special feeling.

Can you give us a sneak peek into what exciting things Kyle Lionhart has in store for 2024?

I’m currently working on a new album; I’ve got some more overseas shows to announce very soon and I’m working on a special series that I’ll be running through my Instagram involving lots of collaborations with touring artists from around the world.
