THE CURRUMBIN SWELL
A dream-weaved surf break and dazzling creek-to-coast scenery keep Currumbin littered with long boarders and naturalists. But as the wider region’s hospitality heroes descend and the town’s Hinterland begins to thrive, visitors of all sorts are clamouring for a taste of the action. Here, we celebrate Currumbin’s meteoric rise.
WRITTEN BY KRISTIE LAU-ADAMS

HISTORY
A family-friendly Gold Coast hot spot, Currumbin hums with a cosy village ambiance enhanced by natural wonders. The coastal town stretches to the city’s southern Hinterland, encompassing Currumbin Waters’ burgeoning industrial precinct and Currumbin Valley’s subtropical landscape.
The suburb grew significantly in the 1920s when fibro beach houses first hit the shoreline and by the 1940s, Australia’s entire east coast could hear the buzz. The 1947 opening of Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary soon secured the town’s place on every Queensland holiday maker’s wish list.
In 1949, Elephant Rock, an ancient volcanic rock formation rising through the sand at the southern end of Currumbin

Beach, became host to a now-famed Anzac Day Dawn Service, cementing Currumbin as a true coastal gem rippled with a deep sense of community. A lack of high-rises and the measured arrival of chic eateries, wellness retreats and retail boutiques has helped Currumbin remain chilled despite serious visitor growth.
“A TRUE COASTAL GEM RIPPLED WITH A DEEP SENSE OF COMMUNITY.”
PLAY
Hot on the heels of the Gold Coast’s riproaring theme parks, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is the city’s fifth-largest tourism attraction. Home to an array of native animals, including baby koalas and joeys as the team’s conservation efforts prosper,
plus a miniature train network and a children’s play and splash area, the park is a must no matter your age.
Once you’re done, duck into Honeyworld across the road where the delicate art of collecting honey is explored in full and homemade blends prove irresistible.
Attractions to fill your cup are found around every corner of Currumbin — literally. Follow the bend from Tomewin Street to Pacific Parade to spy the mesmerising Currumbin Beach flanked by rocky outcrops. Climb Elephant Rock’s 60-odd stairs to reach a fenced lookout where views extend to Surfers Paradise. The beach also makes waves for its annual Swell Sculpture Festival, which transforms the sand into a gallery space every September.
Hear rosellas squawking and the patter of waterfalls? The hills are alive. On your
way to Currumbin Valley, drop into RE/Wind, an outstanding medispa on Currumbin Creek Road. You’ll be soothed via yoga, Pilates and sound healing, however a restorative salt therapy room is arguably the star of the show. Once everything turns 50 shades of green and dewy, you’ve reached the Hinterland. Extend your self-care journey at Ground Currumbin’s The Bathhouse where hydrotherapy spas, cold plunges and a wood fired hot stone sauna await. Journey deeper into the valley to discover the Currumbin Rock Pools, where youngsters swing off ropes and picnics spread across grassy banks. Prefer to soak up Mother Nature’s handiwork on a horse? Currumbin Valley Scenic Horse Trail Rides offer 90-minute group expeditions. Finally, don’t miss Cougal Cascades at the end of Currumbin Creek Road. A short track will lead you to its photo-perfect downpour, streaming right into a sublime swimming hole.
EAT AND DRINK
Currumbin is enriched with stellar foodie experiences for every meal of the day, however rumbling bellies are especially spoiled at breakfast. You’ll rarely swing and miss in this neck of the woods as locals take their morning coffee and baked goods very seriously.
“CURRUMBIN IS ENRICHED WITH STELLAR FOODIE EXPERIENCES FOR EVERY MEAL OF THE DAY.”
The Bread Social is a standout, recently expanding its southern Gold Coast hole-in-the-wall outpost to a colossal factory headquarters complete with a homely cafe and flaky triumphs including killer pork, sage and apple sausage rolls. You should also drop into the original Fuel Bakehouse on Currumbin Creek Road for breakfast burritos and Nutella donuts, as well as Stones Throw for this LOCALE writer’s favourite homemade choc-banana muffins and beloved Saag Aloo Hash.

Tarte Beach House is the go-to for Parisian hot chocolates and loaded bagels while Pasture & Co. in Currumbin Valley is a fabulous morning out as generous meals are enjoyed amid lush rainforest.
Once beer o’clock strikes, it’s time to hit Balter Brewing Company’s Taproom. Sensational ales, live music, wood fire pizzas and food trucks keep the good times in top gear. Around the corner on Traders Way, Currumbin Valley Brewing Co nail comfort food alongside a range of smooth beers.
Embrace waterfront vistas on the Currumbin RSL deck, off Currumbin Creek, where pub classics are devoured in relaxed style. There’s also Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Club, right next to Elephant Rock, although you can kiss your evening goodbye because the club’s astonishing over-the-water location is downright magnetic.
Crank up the party at Tommy’s Italian, where authentic dishes come with beach views and the vibe is always dialled up. Its little sister venue, Little Tommy’s, is also superb for curbside pizza and Aperol Spritz’. Refined wine slurping is best experienced at Little Vine Room, while Bruce on Pacific Parade attracts an after-dark crowd ever-keen for cocktails.
SHOP
Take a piece of Currumbin’s signature sleepy lifestyle home with you thanks to a collection of charming boutiques. Tarte Market, adjoined to Tarte Beach House, is the latest to open its doors, offering beachy and boho-inspired homewares alongside scoops of gelato. Drift Trading Co. is another goodie, best-known for its soy candles.
Along Pacific Parade, you’ll find Will & Bear for universally flattering, top-quality hats, Beach n Beyond for eye-catching swimwear as well as kids’ clothing and accessories, and Designs with Love for trendy Aussie and New Zealand-born labels.
Currumbin Valley is also sprinkled with retail pit stops. Head to Sea HQ at Pasture & Co. for quirky homewares and garden accessories, while a visit up to Freeman’s Organic Farm offers fresh seasonal produce and a beautiful spot for a cuppa overlooking the extraordinary region in its entirety.

BIG FISH SMALL POND

Energised and hypnotically fun-fuelled, music producer Fisher embodies the essence of the Gold Coast. But as the local’s star rapidly rises, so too does the lure of a glitzy international lifestyle. Here to reaffirm his adoration for the Gold Coast, in the wake of launching a local music festival and welcoming his first child, Fisher tells us why this city will always be home.
WRITTEN BY KRISTIE LAU-ADAMS
A Grammy nomination. Playing to 250,000 people at the Carnival of Brazil. Securing residencies in Las Vegas and Ibiza. The global music community has enthusiastically embraced Paul Fisher, the Gold Coast-based DJ who’s better known as Fisher or The Fish.
But as far as career achievements go, it was the unveiling of his very own music festival — Out 2 Lunch, staged on the sand at Coolangatta in May — that left the ultimate mark. Serving as the event’s headliner, delighting 30,000 local dance fans, Fisher, 37, rolled out an initiative that pumped $50 million into the local economy. It engaged more than 200 local businesses and created more than 2,000 jobs. And then there’s the impact it had on the man himself.
“It was insane,” he says. “Growing up on the Gold Coast, and surfing Snapper [Rocks] and Greeny [Greenmount Beach] as a grom, this was a dream come true for me to be playing on my home beach. I’m proud to have been able to put something like that on for my hometown. We had nothing like that when we were kids and just seeing so many smiles, it totally made it worth it.”
Out 2 Lunch, which took four years to logistically nail, sold out the southern beaches’ vast accommodation offerings. Furthermore, it donated $1 from every ticket sold to the Starlight Children’s Foundation. For every complimentary and guest list ticket issued, a $20 donation to the Pink Elephants Support Network was made. An impressive $35,320 went to philanthropic causes.

The festival’s extraordinary footprint was not lost on Fisher, a former pro surfer who grew up chasing waves alongside local legends like Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson before turning his attention to music in 2005. Despite regularly playing to crowd numbers that eclipse those of Out 2 Lunch, he recalls how surreal the Gold Coast experience felt.
“I remember looking up at different stages on the night, and seeing those 30,000 people and just thinking, ‘Wow, what the hell is going on? I honestly can’t believe this’,” he says. “The crazy part was that a couple of my mates were playing Kirra Beach House the next night and I tagged along for a bit of fun, and as soon as I walked in, everyone just turned and started chanting my name. I thought, ‘F—k it, let’s put on another show,’ and it was just wild in there. I even crowd surfed for old times’ sake. That’s what it’s all about.”
“THIS WAS A DREAM COME TRUE FOR ME TO BE PLAYING ON MY HOME BEACH.”
Coolangatta and Kirra aren’t the only Gold Coast suburbs to have felt the Fish factor. Pouring fresh out of Burleigh Heads is Fisher’s other local triumph, a seltzer brand named Hard FIZZ. The company was launched in 2020 by Fisher and a collective of savvy entrepreneurs including Fisher’s wife, Chloe, who gave birth to the couple’s first child, Bobbi Maree, in June. Hard FIZZ is now the biggest independent alcoholic soda in Australia by value, and third altogether after White Claw and Smirnoff.
The brand was born out of Fisher’s 2018 tour through the United States, when he spotted “all these American college kids drinking seltzers.” He intuitively realised he should launch a range back on home soil. “I just thought, this is going to go nuts back in Australia,” he says. He was spot on. Global data analyst, IWSR, reviewed the drinks economy and estimated that the Australian seltzer market is set to grow 24 per cent by 2025. The prediction was attributed to an expanding consumer demand for healthy yet flavour-packed drinks.
“[It’s] the little engine that could, and it just keeps chugging on,” Fisher says. “We were at a golf tournament in Adelaide recently, and everyone’s doing FIZZ shoeys, including Greg Norman. I’m proud it’s so Gold Coast. Our original motto was, ‘A crew from the coast,’ and it’s definitely that.”
So, what’s next for the Gold Coast’s double, triple, infinite threat? Nailing a little old thing called parenthood. Like any new dad, Fisher is head over heels for his bundle of joy, taking to Instagram on various occasions to share the love. “Hello world, meet our baby girl,” the father wrote to mark Bobbi’s earthside arrival on the Gold Coast. “The happiest day of the year.”

Family First
Fisher and his wife Chloe, who married four years ago in Bali, welcomed daughter Bobbi Maree after enduring years of IVF heartache.
“I dreamt about you my whole life, I can’t believe I have a little baby girl,” Chloe, a successful model, wrote via Instagram at the time. “Still pinching myself every day that you’re mine, it literally brings tears to my eyes daily. I love you so much Bobbi.”
Fisher also reflected on meeting his newborn.
“My little angel… three hours old and the cutest hiccups I have ever heard. Love you Bobbi,” he wrote via Instagram.
The proud father later detailed how special it was for Chloe (who performed a 15-hour labour to ensure the safe arrival of Bobbi) to fall pregnant after the pair had yearned for a child.
Speaking on Chloe’s podcast, Darling, Shine! on LiSTNR, Fisher said, “I think that these nine months have just been so special for us because there's just been so many downs, this is the biggest up ever and I think we've just been enjoying this nine months together just… loving every second. It's been so special."

GROUNDED IN COMMUNITY

Nine years ago, Peter Aubort stood on a piece of land in Currumbin Valley, a place he had passed daily since childhood. It was home to a derelict machinery shed and a 100-year-old farmhouse earmarked as the commercial centre for the Eco Village at Currumbin but sadly in the hands of receivers for the developer. Yet, there was something about this land that spoke to him, an ancient energy that called out for revival. This wasn’t just a dream of Peter’s; it felt like the land itself was inviting him to create something special for the community. Peter accepted the challenge, embracing a mission that would go on to redefine Currumbin Valley's heart.
Today, that mission is known as Ground Currumbin—a unique community hub that blends the charm of yesteryear with contemporary flair. Ground is more than a place to visit; it’s a place to belong. From the moment you step onto the property, there’s an energy that makes you feel at home. The air buzzes with the hum of community life.
Ground is a space designed for connection, where everyone is welcome, and where every visit leaves you with something unexpected—a new idea, a sense of inspiration, or simply a moment of peace. Peter, a true Currumbin local, knew from the start that this land had to be preserved in its essence. The old machinery shed was stripped, repainted and galvanized, despite the builder advising to knock it down. Peter saw it instead, as preserving the energy and history of the place. “It had to be that way,” he says, “to honour the past while building something new.”
Ground is now a vibrant community hub, home to various businesses, each contributing to the area’s unique character. The Ground Grocer, for instance, started in the old shed as a community co-op and has grown into a family-run enterprise by Paul and Kylie Cook brimming with fresh, local produce. The shelves are stocked with everything from Australian-grown fruits to artisanal pasta, all sourced from nearby farms and artisans. This dedication to supporting local producers not only strengthens the community’s living economy but also offers a sustainable alternative to big corporate chains.
Also onsite is an urban micro farm, where vegetable gardens provide food for the grocer, high value greens and herbs for the cafe, and medicinal herbs for the wellness clinic. Kids can run around the open spaces and classes are held for the public, teaching how to create your own food supplies and gardens in the suburbs.

Pasture & Co, Ground’s family-friendly cafe, is another cornerstone of the community run by Tallebudgera local Dani Riley –a specialist pastry chef, cherished locally for her signature lemon meringue pie. Here, you can enjoy a menu crafted from fresh, organic ingredients that cater to a variety of dietary needs and offers delicious, guilt-free options in a peaceful setting surrounded by greenery.
"WELLNESS IS FOR EVERYONE, IT’S GOT TO BE AN AFFORDABLE OPTION.”
For Peter, creating something for the community had to include wellness. In this, he feels he has a duty of care. Whether seeking respite from the stresses of daily life or chronic illness, Ground is a sanctuary devoted to healing and wholeness. The Bathhouse offers relaxation and rejuvenation, from its magnesium plunge pool—with salts brought in from the Dead Sea —to its traditional cedar hot tub and sauna heated by log fired volcanic rock. The Bathhouse provides a serene escape where phones are not allowed – Instagram comes second to wellness – and the cost is kept accessible to all, not just the affluent. “Wellness is for everyone,” Peter says. “It’s got to be an affordable option.”
Upstairs, the Mind & Gut Clinic, led by Dr Sarah McKenzie (Acupuncturist and Naturopath), provides a holistic approach to health, blending Traditional Chinese Medicine with modern practices. Whether you’re seeking acupuncture, naturopathy or nutrition advice, the clinic offers a comprehensive path to wellness, rooted in simplicity and empowerment. Dr Sarah loves herbal medicine, and the clinic has seen wonderful results for a wide range of common conditions.
Ground is also a place of celebration and creativity. Signature events like the annual Masquerade Ball bring the community together for a night of elegance and festivity under the stars. With live performances, fine food, and a touch of magic, these events are about more than just entertainment; they’re about doing

life with purpose. As Peter puts it, “As a community, we have to celebrate with intention, collaborate with our local creatives and get dressed to the nines —it’s called living.”
Part of being intentional is creating a platform to raise awareness and crucial funding for various charities and organisations within the community. Charities like The Sanctuary (supporting women and children fleeing domestic and family violence), and Fight 4 Youth, a Currumbin based youth program where some of the Ground crew volunteer in a unique Rite of Passage boxing program for young men (originally developed by local legend and ex professional boxer Gavin Topp).
Education and engagement are integral to Ground’s mission. The Movies That Matter series, for example, invites the community to explore thought-provoking films that spark important conversations. These events aren’t just about watching a movie, they’re about broadening perspectives and inspiring change.
For those looking to host their own events, Ground offers stunning spaces for hire, including the Pavilion, Glasshouse and Spiral Garden. Whether it’s a wedding, corporate function, or intimate gathering, these venues provide the perfect backdrop, blending the natural beauty of the valley with the warmth and hospitality that Ground is known for.
At Ground, every visit is an immersive experience, a chance to reconnect with nature, yourself and the community. Peter’s vision for Ground was always about more than just building a business; it was about creating a space where the community could come together, find inspiration and feel at home. And that’s exactly what Ground has become—the heartbeat of Currumbin Valley, a place where everyone is welcome, and where every visit leaves you feeling a little more connected, a little more grounded and a lot more inspired.

A DAY OF WINE AND WONDER

I've always dreamed of indulging in a winery tour at Mt Tamborine, and on a crisp day, I finally set off to fulfill that desire. What followed was a delightful journey through some of the region's finest wineries, each offering a unique blend of breathtaking landscapes, exquisite wines, and unforgettable experiences. Join me as I recount a day filled with laughter, learning, and, of course, plenty of delicious wine.
WRITTEN BY KAREN KINNERSLY
Witches Falls Winery: A Serene Start
Our first stop was Witches Falls Winery, located just minutes from the town centre. As we walked up the canopied brick lane leading to the cellar door, we were greeted by the sight of lush gardens and the inviting ambiance of the charming estate. This family-owned winery is dedicated to producing exceptional wines and creating a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for visitors. Seated outside in the winter sun, overlooking the tranquil vineyard, we felt like we were miles away in a hidden paradise. Although the grapevines were bare, the serene surroundings made the experience special. We opted for the wine tasting, a bargain at $20, allowing us to sample six distinct wines from their portfolio. Eden, our knowledgeable guide, expertly explained each wine and the intricacies of the winemaking process.
To complement our tasting, we indulged in a delicious cheese board featuring locally produced cheeses, pâtés, relishes and other nibbles. It was the perfect accompaniment to our wine selection. Our experience at Witches Falls lasted a wonderful hour and a half, setting the tone for the rest of our day.
@witchesfallswiner
Wine Choice: 2023 Provenance Albariño | Tasting: $20 pp
Hampton Estate Wines:
A Historic Haven
Our next destination was Hampton Estate Wines, where history and beauty seamlessly blend. The estate's striking building was once the Infant Saviour Catholic Church at Burleigh Heads, saved from demolition and relocated to its current breathtaking location. The stunning views of the Gold Coast and Hinterland are the perfect backdrop for enjoying their exquisite wines.
We chose to sit on the veranda, soaking up the sun and the magnificent scenery. Our personal wine tasting included two sparkling wines, with the sparkling rosé being my favourite, and a classic white wine designed for easy, casual drinking. For lunch, I savoured the braised beef cheek - a hearty dish that warmed me up on the chilly day.
@hamptonestatewines
Wine Choice: Hampton Lane Rosé | Tasting: POA

Mason Wines: Afternoon Bliss
Mason Wines was our next stop, and its picture-perfect outlook over the vineyards was truly captivating. We spent a relaxing afternoon on the deck, enjoying a tasting of five of their signature wines. The staff’s expertise and passion for winemaking were evident as they explained each wine and its unique characteristics.
Mason Wines also boasts a restaurant with an extensive menu that celebrates local produce from the Scenic Rim. Before leaving, we couldn't resist purchasing a selection of wines to take home and enjoy later. Mason Wines is situated on Hartley Road at the original Tamborine Mountain vineyard site, now maintained by Robert Mason, who also oversees a 70-acre vineyard in the Granite Belt.
@masonwines
Wine Choice: 2021 Verdelho | Tasting: $10 pp
The
Cauldron Distillery:
A Spirited Finale
Our final stop of the day was The Cauldron Distillery, a place more renowned for its gins than its wines, yet still an experience not to be missed. The bustling atmosphere of live music and food trucks greeted us, creating a festive vibe. Our Stay: Pethers Rainforest Retreat
For those planning a tour or a weekend getaway, we highly recommend staying at Pethers Rainforest Retreat. Our group of five enjoyed the Pethers House, while couples might prefer one of the ten private treehouses for a more romantic stay. Each accommodation option includes a cosy fireplace, perfect for warming up after a day of wine tasting. We chose to create our own tour itinerary and enlisted Mount Tamborine Tours to drive us around for the day. Paul, our friendly and accommodating driver, ensured we were on time for each stop, making the entire experience smooth and enjoyable.
Mt Tamborine’s winery tour is a delightful escape into a world of fine wines, picturesque landscapes, and warm hospitality. Each winery offers something unique, and together they create a tapestry of experiences that any wine lover will cherish. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this tour is a must-do, promising memories that will linger long after the last sip of wine.

THE JEWEL IN CURRUMBIN’S CROWN A SUSTAINABLE LIVING DREAM
Nestled between the iconic Currumbin Alley and the serene Mt Cougal Springbrook National Park, The Eco Village Currumbin offers a unique opportunity for sustainable living. This exceptional estate spans 272 acres of certified Land for Wildlife, serving as both a nature sanctuary and a place to call home. Here, the beauty of the beach and bush converge, offering residents an unparalleled sustainable lifestyle in nature.
A Sustainable Oasis Amid Rising Costs
In a world where the cost of living continues to escalate, The Eco Village Currumbin stands out as a beacon of hope and sustainability. This community of 144 homes is more than just another suburb; it’s a place where kangaroos really do hop down the streets, and residents grow their own food. Imagine living with some of the lowest utility bills on the planet—no homeowner here pays for water or electricity. Instead, the body corporate covers the upkeep of roads, the resort, and the estate’s many assets, including a co-working space and a youth centre. It’s a place where you can truly live, work and play in harmony with nature.
A Global Leader in Eco-Friendly Living
Since being named the World’s Best Eco Development in 2008, The Eco Village Currumbin has received 32 additional awards, solidifying its reputation as the world’s most awarded eco-village. The community was founded by visionaries Chris Walton and Kerry Shepherd, who dreamed of creating a living space with a minimal ecological footprint. Their dream materialised into beautifully designed homes and business dwellings, all built with eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems.
But this village is more than just a collection of houses; it’s a thriving community designed to enhance the wellbeing of its residents. At the heart of the village is a repurposed dairy shed, transformed into a $7 million resort-style community facility. Set amidst flourishing natives, this peaceful hub features a 25-meter non-
chlorinated swimming pool, a library, meditation and yoga spaces, a community hall with a commercial kitchen, a play and BBQ area, and a gym and tennis courts. This is where the community gathers for various events, from mothers’ groups to weddings under the ancient fig tree.
Community and Connection
The village’s thoughtful design fosters a strong sense of community. Homes are arranged in ‘hamlets,’ with 6-8 houses of varying sizes grouped together. This layout encourages a mix of age groups— from young families to elderly residents—to live side by side, creating a vibrant, supportive environment.
Affordable, Eco-Friendly Living in Harmony with Nature
While The Eco Village Currumbin is committed to reducing its ecological footprint, it’s also a leader in providing affordable, sustainable living. The homes are designed to capture the seasons, ensuring comfort and energy efficiency year-round. The village’s fully recycled water system is a testament to its dedication to environmental sustainability, ensuring minimal impact on the surrounding landscape. And, with 80% of the land dedicated to the environment and only 20% used for housing, residents enjoy a lifestyle that is both luxurious and in harmony with nature.
Meet Kym O’Connell: Your Guide to
The
Eco Village
Kym O’Connell, an independent real estate agent with a deep passion for sustainable living, is your guide to The Eco Village Currumbin. Known for her honesty, integrity and commitment to the community, Kym is dedicated to upholding the village’s values and helping prospective owners find their perfect home or block of land. She understands the unique appeal of this eco-friendly haven and is eager to share the vision of Chris and Kerry with future residents.
Pioneers of Off-Grid Living
Among the village’s most notable residents are Rod Mould and Rod McLeod—long-term members and pioneers in off-grid living. Their dedication to sustainability and energy conservation has made them invaluable contributors to The Eco Village Currumbin community. Now, both families are looking to downsize, making their homes available for new families to enjoy.
Rod and Desiree Mould, early adopters of the village’s eco-friendly lifestyle, were spurred on by their interest in passive home design and living an eco-friendly lifestyle within a community setting. Rod’s engineering background, combined with his fascination for harnessing solar energy, quickly made him the village’s go-to expert in passive housing, thermal mass and energy ratings.
The Mould’s stunning dual living home, situated on a 1214 m² block, is designed for two families to thrive in a health retreat-like environment. This home generates no utility bills, offering ample space, luxury and economy in an eco-friendly setting.
Rod and Noela McLeod joined the village after a health crisis led them to seek a healthier, more holistic, less stressful lifestyle for their family. Their home, designed by architect Travis Quinell, is an idyllic country-style oasis just 10 minutes from the beach and town, and is off grid in power, sewage and water, with only internet connectivity. Rod’s previous occupation in home automation also led him to design an ingenious system that puts the house into hibernation at night - showcasing the possibilities of energy saving.
Homeowners in the village for 8.5 years, the McLeods have become role models for true off-grid living in the suburbs, with their award-winning home being one of only two in the Eco Village that is completely off-grid. For Rod McLeod, healthier living means a deeper dive into our lifestyles and being willing to do things differently.
A Unique Opportunity Awaits
The Eco Village Currumbin is more than just a place to live; it’s a community and a way of life. Whether you’re seeking a family home, a commercial space, or an eco-conscious studio, this unique village has something for everyone.
Now is the time to secure your spot with the limited Villas on Village Eco Village—only 8 home studios available. Don’t miss your chance! Join our free buyer tours every Wednesday and weekend to explore the area, experience the amenities, and envision your future in this exceptional community.

SWEET ESCAPE
Fluffy, flaky, glossy, gooey — our love affair with desserts rarely discriminates. But while sugar-laced temptations appear sweet and innocent, the Gold Coast’s treat scene is one lucrative market. From crafty TikTok sensations and celebrity-inspired stunts to local, seasonal ingredients and the unapologetic exploitation of Dulce de Leche, the city’s savviest businesses know how to lure you in.
WRITTEN BY KRISTIE LAU-ADAMS

“THE CALIBRE OF SWEETS ON THE GOLD COAST CHALLENGES THE CAPITAL CITIES.”
Gone are the days when 30-cent soft serves satisfied sweet tooths. Even the colossal croquembouche has no place in today’s merciless quest for crowd-pleasing indulgence.
As an appetite for new flavour profiles swells, and Picasso-level presentation often reigns supreme, the Gold Coast’s dessert connoisseurs have stepped up.
Rivalling the artistry once reserved for Australia’s largest cities, exceptional bakeries and eateries are dishing up world-class treats.
Jenna Muhor, co-owner of Paddock Bakery in Burleigh Heads, believes our local pastry chef talent is unrivalled.
“The scene has evolved and the calibre of sweets on the Gold Coast challenges the capital cities,” Jenna says.
“We all collectively continue to push the bar. I think having such a great place to live helps draw top-tier creative talent.”
Brilliant minds converge
Creativity runs rife on the Gold Coast, where you can find niche treats to suit every tastebud. Love the top of a muffin but lukewarm about the base? Tarte Bakery and Cafe in Burleigh Heads and Tarte Beach House in Currumbin bake strawberry and raspberry muffin tops loaded with Lindt white chocolate daily. How about something a little more risqué? Check out Cheeky Waffles in Surfers Paradise, whose fried goods come [ahem] genitalia shaped.
Chris Cherry, co-owner of Bam Bam Bakehouse in Mermaid Beach, even directs his team to create sweet odes to A-list stars. Asked by a Gold Coast tourism body to craft a Margot Robbie-inspired dish while she was in town for February’s AACTA Awards, Cherry’s crew whipped up the “Golden Girl” croissant, nailed with macadamias, sea salt meringue and mango.
“It got people talking about us,” Chris says, adding that being agile and tapping into the local community has helped Bam Bam attract a cult following.
The role of social media
An influx of Like-worthy content has also helped the Gold Coast cement its status in the global desserts game. Uploading artfully presented treats to TikTok and Instagram can send exposure soaring, often resulting in increased sales.
Michelle van der Hoven, co-owner of Well Bread & Pastry in Palm Beach and Miami, has figured out what keeps her customers scrolling. “With TikTok in particular, the Gold Coast is craving the biggest and gooiest cookies, and filled croissants, far from the traditional kind,” Michelle says. “Full of colour and sweet toppings [work] too. We have seen an explosion in sales of our mini tarts.”
Custard Canteen on Tallebudgera Creek — owned by the team behind Cubby Bakehouse in the Northern Rivers’ Chinderah — are privy to the winning social media formula. A recent post featuring their Biscoff twice-baked croissant, stuffed with gloopy almond frangipane custard, attracted more than 12,000 Likes.

But as shiny as social media presents, Gold Coast businesses know there’s more to success than pretty posts. Sam Saulwick, co-owner of The Bread Social which began in Tweed Heads six years ago and since expanded to the Gold Coast’s Currumbin and Isle of Capri, has always shied away from investing too much time in uploading. “We understand the importance of social media as a marketing tool, but we like to let the products speak for themselves,” Sam says.
The Bread Social, which recently broadened its Currumbin takeaway window into a full-blown cafe, throws its energy into sourcing peak local ingredients. “We follow seasonality,” he explains. “We’ve always thought, ‘Let’s be quite innovative with what’s around us. It’s all around the fruit. If there’s beautiful Davidson’s plums, we might make it into a jam. The following week, we may be poaching pears.”
“THE GOLD COAST IS CRAVING THE BIGGEST AND GOOIEST COOKIES, AND FILLED CROISSANTS.”
Taste sensations
Despite the industry’s thirst for newness, sweet staples like Dulce de Leche remain an immovable stalwart. Tarte’s take on the simmered milk and sugar ooze is a French ‘crueller’ doughnut, glazed and stuffed with the good stuff. Meanwhile, Paddock’s Jenna says customers also love being transported back in time. “Flavours people remember from their childhood – like our Coco Pops milkshake – that spark a little nostalgia are always a draw card.”

LOCALE’s Sweetest Escapes
It’s an impossible choice but our favourite treats never disappoint.
The Bread Social’s Custard Tart
Originally made to split between two, the harmonious clash of pillowy soft goo and blistered pastry is far better for one.
Tarte Bakery and Cafe’s Strawberry Muffin Top
Every bite delights, but when you stumble across a burst of Lindt, you may just shed a tear — it’s that good.
Well Bread & Pastry’s Twice Baked Almond Croissant
Slivered almonds dusted with icing sugar and a silky soft almond cream filling is the perfect coupling.
Custard Canteen’s Portuguese Custard Tart
Sweet yolk custard and a buttery shell merge into a fun-size burst of ecstasy. The closest you’ll come to the streets of Lisbon.
Paddock Bakery’s Creme Brulle Doughnut
One crunch of that sticky, glossy crackling and you’ll understand why it’s their bestseller.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Eight-time World Surfing Champion Stephanie Gilmore frees herself from competition for a year of wave-searching and adventure, with the Gold Coast forever in her heart.

Stephanie Gilmore sends LOCALE Magazine a text message before heading to Indonesia for a Mentawais surf trip with some of her closest friends.
“I don’t know what the next phase is yet, but I’m open to all opportunities,” Gilmore writes in response to our question about her plans for the remainder of 2024. “Currently, I have no plan other than to surf, surf, surf and capture it on film.”
In January, the eight-time World Surfing Champion announced on social media that she was taking a break from competing on the World Championship Tour.
“I am planning to take this season off as a refresh for myself physically, mentally, and to enjoy following swells and free surfing in new places. I am still passionate and dedicated to competing, and I have goals and dreams that I am still chasing.”
The surfing community sighed in disappointment at the thought of a year without watching Gilmore grace the World Surf League stage. But it wasn’t unexpected. If you looked hard enough, the writing was in the sand.
In 2022, Gilmore achieved arguably one of the greatest moments in sport – a recordsmashing eighth world title won by surfing five heats against four individual surfers in one day in the recently devised ‘finals day’ format. Plus, her main rival, five-time World Champion Hawaiian Carissa Moore,
announced her indefinite hiatus from the Tour in January 2024. Gilmore pondered what it all meant – the trophies, titles, and accolades.
“I NEED TO STAY CURIOUS TO WHAT ELSE CAN BE ACHIEVED, ESPECIALLY THE MOMENTS THAT AREN’T DEFINED BY TROPHIES."
“I always think about those things,” Gilmore told our writer in a 2022 interview. “[Wondering] how you can evolve as a human being.”
It’s often tricky to answer those existential questions while tangled in the weeds of routines and responsibilities. Gilmore’s decision to take a year off made even more sense in March 2024 when she revealed on Instagram she was leaving major sponsor Roxy to reunite with Rip Curl, a company that had supported her through her grommet years and four world titles before she left them in 2011.
“I need to stay curious to what else can be achieved, especially the moments that aren’t defined by trophies… Those places, those trips, the people you meet, the waves you find… and I feel like the luckiest person in the world for the opportunity to continue my search with @Ripcurl.”
Her new eight-year, multi-million-dollar partnership with Rip Curl orchestrated the perfect ‘year off’ platform for Gilmore, travelling the world to surf remote waves in idyllic locations as part of their iconic ‘The Search’ initiative. For Gilmore, this opportunity, combined with the option to return to the Tour as a wildcard (without the need to requalify), completes the hybrid she views herself as.
“I’ve never really felt like an athlete,” Gilmore said in that earlier interview.
“But I've never really felt like just a free surfer. [I’ve] always wanted to dance the line where I can show my love for both of these worlds.”
It’s not lost on Gilmore that her beloved home surf town is where it all began and that she’s among the many champions it’s produced.
“This area has all the ingredients to build a genuine surf career,” Gilmore tells LOCALE shortly before her Mentawais getaway.
“I feel a connection [to the Gold Coast].
When I was a grom, I got to surf alongside many surf champions and world-class surfers who I could watch and learn from.
That played a huge role in my success.”
Gilmore’s most iconic hometown moment was in 2005 when she entered the Gold Coast Roxy Pro as a 17-year-old wildcard who famously had to skip school to compete. She exited as the event winner,

taking down two world champions. The locals couldn’t contain their excitement. Screams from the Rainbow Bay Surf Club deck collided with those from the sandy shore each time Gilmore jumped to her feet and secured a highscoring ride.
After that, she was unstoppable. Gilmore’s subsequent successes allowed her to enter the real estate market, and naturally, she chose the Coolangatta area. She remembers the pinch-me moment when receiving the keys to her first home.
“It was an exciting time because surfing was a legitimate career path, and as a young athlete, I had enough support from my sponsors to allow me to make this decision. [It was] a dream to have my own pad for my friends and me to hang out in,” she says.
“[The location] was motivated by the surf in the beginning. Snapper Rocks is one of the world’s best waves, and from Stradbroke Island to Northern NSW, it is incredibly productive for improving your surf skills,” she says. “Now, I love how close it is to the airport as I travel so much. It really is a beautiful part of the world that I get to call home.”
While Gilmore has an obvious affection for the waves at Snapper, she also enjoys the beach-breaks of Tugun and Currumbin and the world-class barrels of South Stradbroke. Greenmount is her go-to for being incredibly beautiful, but for Gilmore, Kirra’s high quality makes it her favourite.
There’s just one elephant in the room: the crowds.
“Some days, it’s easy to get waves, and other days it’s very frustrating. The more assertive you are, the more waves you’ll get. But, sometimes, you get into a rhythm, and surprisingly, the waves come to you amongst the hundreds of people,” she says before adding. “I’d put this down to lowering expectations and being positive.”
“THERE’S A FRESH, YOUNG, CREATIVE ENERGY FLOWING ON THE GOLD COAST. IT’S BEEN MISSING FOR A WHILE, SO IT’S RAD TO SEE LOTS OF COOL PROJECTS HAPPENING AROUND MUSIC AND CULTURE AND PEOPLE BEING PASSIONATE ENOUGH TO POUR THEIR ENERGY INTO BUILDING IT UP."
Gilmore’s other love and main creative expression is playing the guitar. Witnessing the Gold Coast transform from some of its less flattering, outdated stereotypes to hold space for a booming artsy scene inspires her.
“There’s a fresh, young, creative energy flowing on the Gold Coast. It’s been
missing for a while, so it’s rad to see lots of cool projects happening around music and culture and people being passionate enough to pour their energy into building it up,” she says.
As Gilmore revels in the unpredictability of her ‘search’ for waves and adventure, each time her return flight glides onto the OOL tarmac, she’s filled with enormous gratitude for where she gets to call home.
“I’m happy to breathe in the quality fresh air we have on the coast of Australia and enjoy our clean beaches. But, most importantly, I want to see my family and friends.”

Amazonia
The Açaí bowl may have become a cult breakfast go-to for many, but there was once a time no one knew how to pronounce it, let alone order a bowl of it in a cafe. Founded in 2008 by Dwayne Martens, Amazonia has revolutionised the health industry in Australia and beyond with its introduction of açaí berries. Initially unfamiliar to many, these superfoods from the Amazon rainforest quickly gained popularity for their rich antioxidants and health benefits, including cell protection and immune system support. Martens, inspired by his own transformation from sluggishness to vitality through açaí, began selling the berries
at a local market stall, sparking a movement towards organic, sustainable wholefoods.
Today, Amazonia operates from its global headquarters in Arundel, Queensland, producing over 70 certified organic products. Their range includes supplements and plant-based foods, all free from synthetics, GMOs, dairy and artificial ingredients. Beyond product innovation, Amazonia remains committed to environmental sustainability, preserving tens of thousands of acres of rainforest through their hand-harvested and agroforestry practices. This approach not only ensures the authenticity of their offerings but also supports sustainable economies in the Amazon region. As a leader in the plant-based food revolution, Amazonia continues to advocate for a thriving ecosystem and healthy lifestyle choices, promoting wellness through nature's purest ingredients. @amazoniaco

MooGoo
For Gold Coast skincare company MooGoo, it was his mum’s skin irritation that prompted founder Craig Jones to create a natural solution. The Burleigh Heads-based factory now makes more than 40 different products to cater to sensitive skin – from body care to a baby range – as well as products for those who just want natural, effective and sustainable options. While Craig made the first moisturisers, today MooGoo works alongside cosmetic chemists on complex products to make sure they use the latest advances in skin care. The true stand-out however, is that all ingredients used are 100% healthy, natural, non-irritating and effective – so much so, most are even edible. @moogooskincare

Adorn Aromatherapy Jewellery
As a former paediatric nurse, Tash Friedman knows a thing or two about health. With zero idea about business and little about jewellery making, she made the leap to launch Adorn Aromatherapy Jewellery. Tash now handmakes bespoke pieces so people can take the power of essential oils with them throughout their day. Although it looks like a normal piece of jewellery, it is designed to combat stress and anxiety – a few drops of essential oils are applied to the pad concealed within a pendant, a bangle or a ring to diffuse the aroma on the go. From peppermint, for pain or stress relief, to lavender for relaxation or anxiety, all you need to do is take a few deep breaths of your chosen oil from the piece for instant relief.

CULT BRAND BEGINNINGS
Hand-painted mermaids frolic on floaty linen silhouettes, and cowboys buck on wild broncos, while upbeat slogans like ‘You Deserve Joy’ and ‘The World Needs Your Magic’ capture the modern zeitgeist. This is how a cult label is born.
WRITTEN BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
Sabbi caught my attention through my stylish bestie, a connoisseur of enviable outfits. Intrigued, I explored this new brand for its funky linen sets, playful tees, and refreshingly authentic online presence. In a world of curated perfection, Sabbi’s candid, real-life escapades captivated me instantly.
Founded just over a year ago by Ash Tardrew and Jase McDonnell - Sabbi embodies a journey of passion and persistence. Starting in their Gold Coast living room amidst boxes of stock and a DIY website, Ash and Jase navigated the complexities of a brand launch fuelled by their shared backgrounds in fashion and design. Ash hails from Perth, while Jase's fashion-immersed upbringing set the stage for their serendipitous collaboration on the sun-drenched coast.
Their early days were marked by trials –using their savings for initial samples that were "terrible!" admits Ash. "We sold our belongings for a second run." Desperate, Jase even sought tradie jobs from friends, met with laughter—"He looks like a tradie," quips Ash, "but he hasn’t got a handy bone in his body.” A turning point came when comedian Celeste Barber sported their linen set, sparking a viral sensation that catapulted Sabbi into the spotlight overnight.
Today, Sabbi thrives with a dedicated warehouse and nationwide acclaim, a testament to Jase's artistic flair and Ash's intuitive design sensibilities. Jase’s creative chaos - painted cherubs, decks of cards and Vegas slot machines - mirrors Sabbi’s eclectic ethos, while Ash infuses collections with uplifting slogans and a keen audience pulse. From cheeky 'This Senorita Needs a Margarita' to empowering 'Self Love Club' pieces, each garment brims with authenticity and joy.
Beyond their aesthetic prowess, Ash and Jase embody a refreshing honesty.
“People crave authenticity,” Ash asserts. “I'm tired of flawless lifestyle brands.
Life's messy, chaotic and imperfectwe’ve got dogs (that’s ‘Allen from Packing’ and ‘Merv from accounts’) and kids and house renos - a juggle but fun. And we just want to share relatable stories.” Their approach resonates in an era of unattainable perfection. For them, Sabbi isn't just clothes; it’s a community built on positivity.
“WE
LOVE OUR DESIGNS; THESE ARE CLOTHES WE WANT TO WEAR, WE JUST HOPED OTHER PEOPLE WOULD FEEL THE SAME WAY.”
Still, it would all be for naught if the clothes didn’t hold up. Quality is nonnegotiable and Jase's commitment to premium materials and meticulous craftsmanship ensures each piece meets his exacting standards, while Ash's innate style sense guarantees every design is as fashionable as it is functional. From the initial hand-painted linens to their expanding repertoire of streetwear, Sabbi continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.
“We really just make what we like to wear” says Ash. “You’ll find our clothes are [mostly] unisex. I was always a tomboy and Jase can rock a pink sarong better than anyone I know. And we are big on positivity. This label was always about putting something out there that made people feel good.”
Sabbi's meteoric rise is a testament to Ash and Jase's unwavering dedication and infectious optimism. Their success story isn't just about building a brand; it's about creating a movement—one that invites everyone to embrace their unique style, celebrate life's quirks, and, of course, enjoy a margarita with friends without taking themselves too seriously.

Amanda journey in the beauty industry reads like a Hollywood script. “Over the last 20 years, I have had extraordinary experiences in the beauty industry. I became spa manager at the Langham Hotel at the age of 18, and at 21 I became the Leisure Director for Marriott Dubai. There, it was my responsibility to manage the leisure and wellness of the Royal Family of UAE. I would start the day managing over 100 staff, changing the sand on the private beach to be ‘just the right texture’ for the King, and finish my day massaging Mariah Carey’s feet after she sang Happy Birthday to the princess.
Coming back to Australia as the spa manager for Park Hyatt, I was part of Lady Gaga’s personal wellness team. I did everything from pouring ice baths for Cristiano Ronaldo to Justin Bieber’s post-concert massages and manicures for Cyndi Lauper.”
Today, Amanda’s weeks are filled with running her business, delving into skin education and servicing local clients, as well as those who travel from Brisbane and Sydney to experience the Higher Self difference. “At Higher Self Skin, my mission is simply to empower my clients with the skin (and confidence) they deserve,” she says.

GLOBAL GROOVES AND LOCAL VIBES
AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH TIJUANA CARTEL
Tijuana Cartel, a powerhouse on the international music scene, mesmerises with their fusion of Middle Eastern, Indian and Spanish influences set to contemporary electronic beats. Locale spoke with the band about their unique sound, global festival experiences and their latest album, 'Alectura.'
Tijuana Cartel has a distinctive blend of musical influences, including Middle Eastern, Indian and Spanish sounds. How did these diverse elements come together to shape your unique musical style?
Our unique musical style is a product of our diverse interests and influences. Over the years, we've been fascinated by different musical traditions from around the world. The Middle Eastern scales, Indian rhythms and Spanish flamenco guitar have always resonated deeply with us. We've incorporated these elements into our music to create a sound that is both familiar and exotic, blending them seamlessly with electronic beats to give our music a contemporary edge.
You've been a staple on the international festival circuit. Can you share some standout moments from your performances abroad that have left a lasting impact on the band?
Performing at the Fusion Festival in Germany was a standout moment for us. The energy and openness of the crowd were incredible and it felt like a true cultural exchange. Another memorable experience was playing at the Ozora Festival in Hungary, where the psychedelic atmosphere and the unity of the attendees made for an unforgettable performance. These moments abroad have not only expanded our fan base but also enriched our musical journey by exposing us to new sounds and cultures.
Your latest album, 'Alectura,' blends organic house and melodic elements with global rhythms and sounds. Could you share the inspirations behind this record and how it reflects the evolution of Tijuana Cartel's musical style?
'Alectura' is inspired by our travels and the various musical traditions we've encountered. We wanted to create an album that reflects our growth as musicians and our deepening understanding of global rhythms. The organic house elements add a danceable quality, while the melodic aspects ensure that our music remains emotive and engaging. This record represents the culmination of our experiences and the evolution of our sound, blending electronic music with live instrumentation in a way that feels both fresh and authentic.
As residents of the Gold Coast, how has the local environment influenced your music and creative process over the years?
The Gold Coast's vibrant and laid-back atmosphere has been a huge influence on our music. The natural beauty of the beaches and hinterlands provides endless inspiration, and the local music scene is

incredibly supportive and dynamic. Being surrounded by such a creative community has encouraged us to experiment and push the boundaries of our sound. The relaxed lifestyle here also allows us to recharge and find balance, which is crucial for our creative process.
Looking ahead, what can fans expect from Tijuana Cartel in terms of new music or collaborations for the rest of the year?
We're excited to be working on some new tracks that explore even more diverse sounds and rhythms. Fans can expect collaborations with artists from different genres and backgrounds, bringing fresh perspectives to our music. We're also planning to release a series of remixes of our previous tracks, giving them a new life and reaching new audiences. Stay tuned for some exciting announcements!
Your live shows are known for their energy and connection with the audience. How do you maintain that dynamic experience night after night?
Maintaining that dynamic experience comes from our genuine love for performing and connecting with our audience. Each show is a unique experience, and we feed off the energy of the crowd. We also keep our setlists fresh and incorporate improvisation, which keeps things exciting for both us and our fans. Regular rehearsals and staying physically fit help us deliver high-energy performances consistently.
Could you tell us about any upcoming tours or special performances that you're particularly excited about?
We're thrilled to be headlining some major festivals later this year, we're also planning a special hometown show on the Gold Coast, which will be an incredible experience for us and our local fans. Additionally, we have some intimate acoustic sets lined up that will showcase a different side of our music.
Winning awards like Live Act of the Year multiple times at the Gold Coast Music Awards, speaks volumes about your live performances. What do these accolades mean to you?
These accolades are incredibly meaningful to us because they reflect the hard work and passion we put into our live shows. It's an honour to be recognised by our peers and the local community, and it motivates us to keep pushing ourselves to deliver unforgettable performances. These awards also validate the connection we have with our audience and remind us of the impact our music can have.
Beyond music, what do you love most about being part of the Gold Coast community, and how does the region continue to inspire and support Tijuana Cartel's journey?
Being part of the Gold Coast community is a privilege. We love the sense of camaraderie and support among local artists and businesses. Elvis – Burleigh Heads
Heading north on the Gold Coast Highway through Burleigh Heads and you can’t miss the 12-metre mural of the king of Rock ‘n’ Roll… Well not Elvis per se, more precisely, actor Austin Butler as the legendary icon. Inspired by the production of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis movie, this mural was born from a conversation about revitalising the Gold Coast arts scene postpandemic. Recognising the film’s impact – shot on the Gold Coast and creating 900 local jobs and spotlighting the area in the process – the artist, Matty Tapae, saw a mural as the perfect tribute to Luhrmann. Working 12-15 hour days, even braving a night of rain under a makeshift tarp, the mural was completed in time for the premiere. This project reflects the vision of the Gold Coast as Australia’s arts capital, enriched by public art for all to enjoy. @mattybro_art

This mural perfectly complements the shop's eclectic interior, with lush greenery and floral motifs that create a vibrant welcome to the dreamy space inside. Lest We Forget – Currumbin
At Currumbin RSL, Mike Shankster’s "Lest We Forget" mural is a poignant tribute to the soldiers who have served and sacrificed. The mural features red poppies and a veteran’s hand holding them, symbolising respect and remembrance. This powerful piece honours the emotional toll of war and the gratitude we owe to those who have fought for our freedom. It’s a moving reminder of the bravery and resilience of our veterans.

The Pink Hotel – Coolangatta
The Pink Hotel in Coolangatta is the complete package of retro cool and features a stop-you-in-your-tracks mural inspired by - wait for it - TECHNICOLOUR COSMIC JUNGLE TEQUILA DISCO. This psychedelic marvel was created in collaboration with Tequila Herradura and artist Kiel Tillman and brought to life by The Zoo Republic. A team who nailed the brief and captured the charm and vibrant energy of the iconic hotel. Tillman’s artwork - where bright neons sparkle against warm tones - is a playful blend of nostalgia and modernity, making it a standout landmark in Coolangatta’s bustling scene. @kieltillman

A Dream for Every Night
Camille Manley, an artist and muralist based in Burleigh Heads, is renowned for her vibrant works displayed on buildings throughout the Northern Rivers and Gold Coast. Her joyful and energetic style brings life to public spaces, making her art hard to miss. Beyond her murals, Camille is an accomplished illustrator of children's books, exploring themes of human interaction with our surroundings and the natural environment.
Camille's magical illustrations take children on delightful journeys where imagination intertwines with everyday life. Her whimsical and emotive work encourages children to believe in themselves and cherish their unique qualities, providing a space for young minds to dream and explore.
In the enchanting children's book A Dream for Every Night, Camille's illustrations capture the essence of bedtime magic. Her talent for merging abstract visuals with narrative elements creates a dreamscape that guides young readers into a world of wonder. This unique bedtime treasury, featuring over 160 short stories and a dream glossary, gently takes children by the hand, leading them on a journey into dreamland.

The Sea in Me
From multitalented athlete, musician and writer Cody Simpson comes The Sea in Me, a breathtaking story about finding calm amid the bustle of everyday life. In his new children's book, Cody promotes mindfulness and the importance of finding inner peace by quieting the world's noise and swimming underwater with nature.
The Sea in Me invites readers to dive deep and explore a world where the heartbeat slows and the only sounds are those of the sea. Cody's narrative encourages them to embrace the ocean's tranquillity, blocking out life's distractions to hear their inner voice. As a beloved Australian swimmer, Cody's lifelong connection to the sea is evident in every word. Growing up by the beach, his love for the ocean has been a constant, guiding force through his journey from a global recording artist to Broadway performer.
The book is a testament to Cody’s belief that swimming and the ocean are profound art forms, offering a serene escape and a source of inspiration. When your heart beats faster and the noises close in, it’s time to make a break for it and find the sea within. Dive deep, look, listen and feel all the creatures as they block out the distractions, allowing you to listen only to the voice inside you.
Inspired by the peace Cody has found in the ocean since he was a little boy, The Sea in Me is a story about finding calm amidst the hustle of everyday life. It’s a beautiful introduction into mindfulness, making it a perfect read for children and adults alike. @codysimpson

The Bravest Word
Kate Foster, a children's author based on the Gold Coast, captures hearts with her stunning collection of children’s books. Originally from a quaint town in southeastern England, Kate now lives with her family and beloved rescue dogs. Her writing beautifully explores themes of friendship, family dynamics, and the special bond between children and their pets, creating narratives that resonate deeply with young readers.
Amongst her works is the poignant heartfelt story, The Bravest Word, about the bond between a boy called Matty a rescue dog named Cliff who helps him find the courage to face his struggles. And Kate’s most recent work, Small Acts, co-authored with Kate Gordon, is another touching story about helping others, by beginning with one small act of kindness. Kate’s ability to weave touching and sometimes humorous moments into her narratives makes them compelling to read, while providing a powerful exploration of mental health, offering insights and fostering empathy in readers of all ages.
Beyond her storytelling, Kate is a passionate advocate for autism and mental illness awareness. Through her books and engaging presentations, she aims to promote a deeper understanding and positive representation of these issues. Kate’s talks are known for their authenticity, sensitivity and positivity. She uses interactive presentations to help children recognise and understand the invisible struggles others may face, encouraging them to be better friends and allies.
