A quiet agricultural revolution is unfolding in the Northern Rivers, where farmers, innovators, and community leaders are embracing regenerative practices to transform the way food is grown, and ecosystems are restored. It’s a movement focused on sustainability and restoration, and it’s reshaping the future of farming. WRITTEN BY DONNA
Regenerative farming is more than a method; it’s a philosophy rooted in healing the land, fostering biodiversity, and reconnecting people with nature. In a region celebrated for its natural abundance, this movement offers a promising blueprint for the future of agriculture.
At its core, regenerative farming is about working with nature, not against it. Techniques like rotational grazing, no-till farming, and mixed-species planting build soil health, sequester carbon, and support biodiversity. Unlike conventional methods that deplete resources, this approach seeks to restore and enhance the land. In the Northern Rivers, a biodiverse hotspot with fertile soils and temperate climate, regenerative farming has profound significance.
Local pioneers such as Pam and Martin Brook of Brookfarm, along with regenerative farming advocate Andrew Cameron, are at the forefront of this movement. Their efforts exemplifying how commercial farming and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
“IT’S ABOUT BEING CUSTODIANS OF THE LAND AND MAKING DECISIONS THAT ENSURE IT’S BETTER FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS."
Today, the Brook name has become synonymous with regenerative farming in the Northern Rivers. In 1989, after relocating with their young sons Will and Eddie, from Melbourne to the Byron Bay hinterland, Pam and Martin were simply driven by a dream to reconnect with the land. They purchased a neglected dairy farm with plans to transform it into a thriving macadamia orchard. What they found was a landscape in disrepair.
“The property was severely eroded and overrun with weeds. It was a complete sad mess,” Martin recalls. Yet amidst the lantana, they discovered remnants of ancient subtropical rainforest—a glimpse of what the land once was.
Over the next three decades, the Brooks planted more than 35,000 rainforest trees, creating wildlife corridors and restoring native habitats. Their vision extended beyond the orchard itself—to the soil, water, and biodiversity that sustain it. Through composting, cover cropping, and eliminating synthetic chemicals, they cultivated an ecosystem where macadamias thrive alongside native species.
“It’s not just about farming,” says Will Brook, who now leads the family business. “It’s about being custodians of the land and making decisions that ensure it’s better for future generations. That’s always been central to our philosophy.” Today, Will’s children walk the same orchards he and
his brother Eddie explored as kids, a living testament to the Brooks’ multigenerational commitment to sustainability.
Today, Brookfarm is more than a premium muesli producer with a global reach—it’s also home to Cape Byron Distillery. The distillery crafts spirits infused with native botanicals, including Davidson plum and aniseed myrtle, sourced directly from their regenerated rainforest.
The Brooks are also staunch supporters of the Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy, with Martin serving as vice president. “It’s about showing what’s possible,” Martin says. “You can farm sustainably while restoring the environment.”
Regenerative farmer Andrew Cameron has also played a pivotal role in advancing sustainable farming practices across the region. As both a seasoned farmer and farm consultant, he has helped countless others transition their properties into thriving, regenerative ecosystems. His own work at Fig Rock Farm in Upper Burringbar stands as a prime example of his work. By managing invasive species, planting native bush foods, and improving flood resilience, Andrew has transformed the property into a harmonious landscape where avocado orchards, native rainforest, and lush pastures coexist.
Beyond his hands-on farming and consultancy work, Andrew also serves as the Agricultural Extension Officer for Byron Shire Council. His mentorship and educational initiatives have inspired many, including actress-turned-environmental advocate Rachel Ward, whose film Rachel’s Farm documents her journey into regenerative agriculture. Through his guidance, Andrew has helped shape a growing movement, demonstrating that one person’s vision can spark meaningful change across an entire region.
“Regeneration is about legacy,” says Cameron. “It’s about leaving the land better than we found it and empowering future generations to thrive.”
In Clothiers Creek, landowner Michelle Kuramochi and regenerative farmer Rachael Sanderson are among those influenced by Cameron’s work. Together, they run a micro regenerative farm called Raven Place Farm, creating a holistic sanctuary that integrates farming, education, and sustainability.
“IT’S ABOUT LEAVING THE LAND BETTER THAN WE FOUND IT AND EMPOWERING FUTURE GENERATIONS TO THRIVE.”
Michelle lives on the land with her husband Shinji and operates the Raven Place Cafe. Japanese-inspired street food is just the first surprise of this unassuming location. Their commitment to sustainability extending to every facet of the operation; ingredients are sourced directly from the farm (a few metres from the kitchen), food waste is composted, tallow waste is repurposed into soap, and coffee grounds are added to create a ‘tradie soap’—a clever and practical solution with a sustainable twist.
Meanwhile, Rachael transforms the land through her business, Life A Little Greener. She also runs workshops on chemical-free gardening and bush regeneration, inspiring the community to adopt small but impactful practices. “The Northern Rivers lends itself naturally to this way of life,” Rachael explains. “People are becoming more aware of the impacts of chemical use on our bodies and looking for healthier alternatives.”
The duo partner with local businesses to foster circular economies and employ innovative solutions like mycelium-based weed management. Pioneered by the nonprofit We Forest Earth, this technique replaces chemicals with edible mushrooms, offering a sustainable and groundbreaking approach to land care.
This blend of innovation, cooperation and education may be propelling the regenerative movement forward, but its principles aren’t limited to largescale farms or global environmental challenges. Every individual, from backyard gardeners to city dwellers, can contribute by composting food waste, planting diverse species, avoiding harmful chemicals, and supporting local farmers. Small, mindful actions like these add up to create a healthier planet—one garden at a time.
At its core, regeneration is simply a philosophy that places life, connection, and care at the heart of every decision. Central to this approach is the integration of First Nations knowledge, which emphasises harmony between people and the land. By honouring these time-honoured systems, the regenerative movement deepens our connection to the environment and cultivates a greater respect for its balance and vitality.
From the Brooks’ pioneering efforts to Cameron’s visionary leadership and the innovations at Raven Place Farm, regenerative farming is transforming the Northern Rivers. It’s a movement grounded in respect for the land and a commitment to future generations.
“How do we act as custodians rather than just taking from the land?” Will Brook reflects. “That’s the question we keep coming back to.”
In the Northern Rivers, the answer is already taking root, proving that regeneration is not just a method—it’s a way of life.
Some movies grab you by the heartstrings and pull you in. Some mesmerise with their epic cinematography. Some mirror real life in a profoundly moving way. Others educate and raise awareness. Take My Hand is all of these.
WRITTEN BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
When John Raftopoulos and Claire Jensz first met as teenagers, neither could have imagined how their paths would intertwine in the most extraordinary way. Their real-life journey—one of friendship, love, separation, and an eventual reunion in the face of adversity—forms the heart of Take My Hand, an evocative romantic drama, set in the Northern Rivers, now streaming. More than a love story, the film is a deeply personal testament to resilience and a powerful advocacy piece for Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a disease that radically changed Claire’s life.
Claire’s story is one of immense courage—a mother facing a life-altering diagnosis, the devastating loss of her husband, and the brave decision to return to Australia with her three young sons, leaving behind the life they knew. John’s is one of devotion—the unwavering certainty about the girl he fell in love with at 15, a quiet melody threading through the film.
His determination to share their story and shed light on a disease that affects millions worldwide became the driving force behind Take My Hand.
As a first-time writer and director, Raftopoulos faced immense challenges translating this deeply personal narrative into a feature film. With guidance from acclaimed filmmaker Wayne Blair (The Sapphires), he brought an honest and raw depth to the story. “I just couldn't let anyone else direct it,” he admits.
Closely mirroring real-life events, with Claire’s MS diagnosis at its heart, Take My Hand stars Radha Mitchell (Pitch Black, Man on Fire, Blueback) as Laura (inspired by Claire) and Adam Demos (Sex/Life, UnREAL) as Michael (John’s fictional counterpart). Their nuanced performances bring depth and authenticity to the story.
Laura’s journey takes her from a successful career in London to Australia, where she must rebuild her life following her husband’s sudden death. Amid grief and the challenges of her diagnosis, she finds solace in Michael—a childhood sweetheart who never stopped loving her.
Adding to the film’s emotional resonance is its breathtaking cinematography, which transforms the Northern Rivers into a character of its own. Shot accross Byron Bay, Bangalow, Lennox Head, and other stunning locations, the film captures the close-knit community and magical landscapes of a region Raftopoulos and Jensz call home.
Locals will recognise familiar landmarks, including Zephyr Horses (which John and Claire co-own), Harvest restaurant in Newrybar (sadly now closed but nostalgically captured on film), Victoria’s at Ewingsdale, Federal Hall, Bangalow’s main street, Baz & Shaz Fruit & Veg in Suffolk Park, and the beach at Lennox Head—all seamlessly woven into the narrative. “The area is second to none for landscape and community,” says Raftopoulos. “It’s my home, and I wanted the film to reflect that sense of belonging.”
Bronte Pictures, the production company behind Take My Hand, also has strong ties to the region. Founded by Bangalow-based producer Blake Northfield, the company has played a key role in elevating Australian cinema with its expanding portfolio of acclaimed films. It was Northfield’s immediate belief in the story that set the film in motion, describing it as, “a film about hope, resilience, and never giving up.” He also saw the value in filming locally, adding, “Using familiar locations to honour this moving story—collaborating with locals and involving as many as possible in the film—was an incredibly positive experience. While many of the crew were local, those who travelled from interstate quickly fell in love with the region.”
Beyond its love story, Take My Hand serves as an awarenessdriven film in partnership with MS Australia. The organisation’s CEO, Rohan Greenland, praised the film for its, “profound portrayal of MS and its potential to spark meaningful awareness within the community,” adding, “MS Australia is excited to partner with Claire Jensz, John Raftopoulos, and the creative team behind Take My Hand.” Through an honest and unsentimental depiction of Laura’s struggles, the film sheds light on the realities of MS, a disease that primarily affects young adults and is most prevalent in women. Audiences gain a deeper understanding of the everyday challenges faced by those living with MS, with the film’s authenticity rooted in the lived experiences of those who know the disease firsthand.
For Jensz, who also serves as a producer, the film’s ability to educate is just as important as its emotional impact. “It’s surreal to see your life on the big screen,” she shares. “But it’s humbling to know it can help raise awareness about MS and the realities of living with it.”
Raftopoulos, who co-wrote the screenplay with Dave Paterson, brings his own deeply personal perspective to the film. The portrayal of MS is a nuanced reflection of lived experience. “We feel the pain of those who live with MS and their carers and are privileged to give a new platform to the disease,” he says. “We hope this film educates and inspires those who have a passion for something or someone and refuse to let an illness define them.”
The disease, which affects over 33,000 Australians and three million people worldwide, remains without a cure.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system, disrupting communication between the brain and body. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibres, leading to inflammation and scarring. Symptoms vary widely and can include fatigue, vision problems, mobility challenges, cognitive impairment, and chronic pain. While MS is not directly fatal, its progression can significantly impact quality of life.
MS is most commonly diagnosed in young adults, with women three times more likely to be affected than men. The exact cause remains unknown, though a combination of genetic and environmental factors is believed to contribute. Despite advances in treatment, there is currently no cure.
MS Australia is the leading advocacy and research organisation dedicated to supporting Australians affected by MS. They provide essential services, fund research for better treatments, and work toward finding a cure. Through awareness campaigns, community support, and policy initiatives, MS Australia strives to improve the lives of those living with the disease.

While he may play tough guys on screen, Australian actor Jake Ryan is more of a softie at heart. Family man and self-confessed homebody, he’s found that Byron Bay offers the perfect balance between career and family life—it’s something he doesn’t take for granted.
“I GET TO WORK IN AN INDUSTRY I LOVE, BE PRESENT FOR MY KIDS, AND BE SURROUNDED BY NATURE. IT’S THE BEST OF ALL WORLDS,”
After years in the hustle and bustle of Sydney, Ryan and his partner, DJ Alice Quiddington, made the move north two years ago with their two young children. “The region was always a special place for us to holiday, and after one particular trip, we thought, ‘Why aren’t we living here?’” Longtime friend, collaborator and Northern Rivers local, Blake Northfield. Having worked on seven films together, he knew firsthand that Byron wasn’t just a great base for their careers but an incredible place to raise a family.”
It may be idyllic, but it’s not the life he originally imagined for himself. As a teenager, Ryan had no interest in drama, “You would have had to pay me to attend drama class back then,” he laughs. Instead, his passion was martial arts. A Taekwondo prodigy, he earned a black belt at just nine years old, the youngest in the country at the time. He went on to become a ten-time Australian champion, a key member of the national team, and was ranked fourth in the world on three occasions. His dream was to represent Australia at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but a devastating knee injury derailed those plans. Looking back, he calls it a blessing in disguise.
“In the moment, it was heartbreaking,” he reflects. “But that injury pushed me onto a path I might never have taken otherwise.”
That path began in an unlikely place—working in his father’s pub in Richmond, Victoria, where the late legendary Australian actor Bill Hunter was a regular. Hunter’s passion for the craft was contagious. Their conversations piquing Ryan’s curiosity and planting the seed for what would come next.
As fortune would have it, a chance encounter with another film industry professional at a wedding led to an audition for a role in Cate Shortland’s film Somersault. While he didn’t land the role, the experience sparked a newfound passion for acting. Determined to pursue it, he enrolled at the Actors Centre Australia in Sydney.
Small roles in television and film followed, with appearances in The Sapphires, Underbelly, Wentworth, and The Great Gatsby. His breakthrough came when he secured the long-running role of Robbo on Home and Away.
While the stability of the soap allowed him to refine his craft and gain widespread recognition, he sought to challenge himself. “I took time off Home and Away to do Savage in New Zealand, and that was a turning point,” he says. The critically acclaimed film, directed by Sam Kelly, showcased his ability to take on complex, gritty roles, cementing his reputation as a versatile performer. “I was so proud of that project.”
Since then, Ryan’s extensive TV credits include NCIS: Sydney, Last King of the Cross, Ten Pound Poms, Wolf Like Me, Nine Perfect Strangers, Wolf Creek, Wentworth, The Leftovers, Underbelly: Razor, and Fat Tony & Co. He recently wrapped filming on Patrick Hughes’s War Machine for Netflix alongside Allan Ritchson, Dennis Quaid, and Jai Courtney. He also stars in Netflix’s worldwide hit series Territory and has several films set for release this year, including Homeward and Primitive War. Ryan’s love for action roles stems from his martial arts background. He thrives on the choreography and physicality, bringing authenticity to fight scenes. “It’s like a dance, but with more bruises,” he jokes. Though years of action-packed roles have taken their toll. “I’ve popped ribs, torn my bicep—it’s not as easy as it used to be,” he laughs. “But I still love a good bit of biffo on screen.”
Despite his success, Ryan remains grounded, always appreciative of the opportunities that come his way. “It’s a tough industry. You need a bit of luck and the right connections,” he says. “You just have to be grateful for every gig.”
Looking ahead, Ryan is also expanding his role behind the camera, venturing in producing roles. “I co-produced Kain and Homeward,” he says. “It’s a whole new challenge, but I’m really enjoying it.”
With the Northern Rivers and Gold Coast booming as film hubs, Ryan is in an enviable position. “The landscape offers everything—rainforests, beaches, cityscapes, even desert-like settings. It’s no surprise big studios are setting up here. And with self-taped auditions, you don’t have to be in LA anymore—you can be anywhere.”
Amidst his career’s demands, Ryan loves the slower pace of life in Byron, where his children can grow up playing in the streets with their friends. “These days, when I’m not working, I’m happy to be pottering around at home.”
“I don’t take it for granted,” he says. “Friends nearby, the kids playing together, and the chance to work on great projects right here in Australia—it doesn’t get much better than that.”

Each year in the Northern Rivers, hundreds of cats and dogs find themselves lost, abandoned, or surrendered by their owners. In 2024 alone, Northern Rivers Animal Services (NRAS) took in 155 surrendered dogs and 139 surrendered cats—startling figures that highlight the ongoing need for animal welfare support in the region. Yet, thanks to the tireless efforts of this self-funded, notfor-profit charity, 136 dogs and 114 cats were rehomed, marking a new chapter for these animals.
Based in Ballina, NRAS has been transforming the lives of animals in need since 2001. What began as a modest operation run out of the back of their Op Shop on River Street has grown into a vital resource for the community. For years, the organisation relied solely on foster carers to house animals in need, but in 2013, NRAS took a bold step forward by purchasing Ballina Council’s old pound. By 2016, after extensive fundraising and renovations, the dream of a purpose-built shelter became a reality at 61 Piper Drive.
Today, this facility is a sanctuary for animals awaiting their forever homes. The shelter features seven operational kennels with outdoor exercise areas, as well as a purpose-built cat cottage with spacious ‘condo-style’ housing and outdoor exercise yards, which include gardens and play structures.
Beyond offering food, shelter and medical care, NRAS is committed to tackling the root causes of animal overpopulation. Their Subsidised Desexing Scheme (SDS) allocates $25,000 annually to assist low-income pet owners with desexing costs. In 2024, this program facilitated the desexing of 73 dogs and
126 cats, reducing the number of unwanted litters and ensuring healthier lives for countless animals.
The heart of NRAS success lies in its dedicated community of volunteers and foster carers. Volunteers support every aspect of the charity, from caring for animals to running the Op Shop, which serves as the main source of funding. Foster carers, meanwhile, provide temporary homes and personalised care to animals waiting for their forever families. Without these individuals, NRAS ability to help animals would be significantly limited.
But the organisation’s work extends beyond care and adoption. NRAS advocates for the value and well-being of cats and dogs in society, promoting education to improve attitudes toward pet ownership. Their goal? To achieve zero euthanasia rates for all healthy and treatable animals.
Every donation and act of support makes a difference. Funds raised go directly toward providing food, shelter and medical care for animals in need. For those looking to make an impact, there are many ways to help—whether by volunteering, fostering, donating, or sponsoring an animal in care. Even spreading the word about NRAS work creates ripples of change, inspiring others to contribute.
By raising the value of companion animals and ensuring they receive the care and respect they deserve, NRAS are building a compassionate community where every pet has the chance to live a happy life. Every contribution, no matter how small, helps create brighter futures for the animals of the Northern Rivers. To learn more or get involved, visit nras.org.au.
There’s something deeply satisfying about tearing into a fresh loaf of sourdough. The crunch of the crust, the soft bread, that slight tang. But behind every great loaf is a story, one that starts long before it reaches your plate.
WRITTEN BY KATE REYNOLDS
The Northern Rivers has long been home to passionate food makers, and the bread scene here is no exception. For Will from Sequel Bakery, breadmaking is more than a craft; it’s a connection. To the land, to the people who grow and mill the grain, and to the community that gathers each week to share in the final product. “Bread is such a simple thing. Just flour, water, and salt, but it’s also incredibly complex,” he says. “It takes patience, precision, and respect for the process.”
Sequel’s bread begins in the wheat fields of Australia, using organic grains that are stone-milled in Gunnedah. “Stoneground flour gives you a depth of flavour you just don’t get with modern milling,” Will explains. “It’s an ancient method, where the grain is passed between two stones seven or eight times, depending on how much of the bran and germ we want to keep. That’s what makes it special.”
But it’s not just about flavour. Structure is just as important. That’s where roller-milled flour comes in. “Stoneground flour can be unpredictable in a commercial setting,” Will says. “Roller-milled flour lets us create bread that’s consistent, with a beautiful rise and a texture people love. The key is finding the right balance between the two.”
That balance extends to every stage of the process. The dough is blended with Sequel’s sourdough starter and high-quality spring water, then left to ferment slowly, allowing the wild yeast and bacteria to develop flavour and strength. “We push the hydration in our dough. It’s wetter and harder to handle than what most commercial bakeries use,” Will says. “But that’s what gives it that caramelised crust and open crumb. It’s always on the edge, and we love that.”
Sourdough has seen a huge resurgence in recent years, something Will credits to both its flavour and its digestibility. “It’s just better for you,” he says. “More people are paying attention to what they eat, and sourdough naturally fits into that.”
For Nadia from Breadicine, the journey to breadmaking was a personal one. After leaving a 30-year career in the wholesale baking industry due to allergies and illness, she started experimenting with bread that fit within the limits of her guthealing journey. “I began baking for myself, then for friends, and one day someone suggested I take my loaves to market. The response was overwhelming. I realised there was a real need in the community,” she says.
Breadicine focuses on nutrient-dense, gut-friendly loaves made with organic, all-natural ingredients. Specialising in sprouted and activated breads, as well as gluten-free and grain-free options, Nadia’s goal was to challenge the perception of what glutenfree bread could be. “Most gluten-free breads rely on premixes, starches, gums, and eggs for structure,” she explains. “I wanted to create something that was not only wholesome and nutritious but also delicious.”
“MORE PEOPLE ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT THEY EAT, AND SOURDOUGH NATURALLY FITS INTO THAT.”
For both Sequel and Breadicine, fermentation is key. Not just for flavour, but for health too. “Sourdough is a living, breathing organism,” Nadia says. “Working with wild yeasts in a tropical climate is unpredictable at the best of times, but it’s taught me so much. It took me nearly 400 loaves before I sold my first one at market.”
“THERE’S SOMETHING FULFILLING ABOUT USING INGREDIENTS STRAIGHT FROM THE EARTH—PRESERVING THEIR INTEGRITY AND TURNING THEM INTO SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL.”
Farmers’ markets play a crucial role for these bakers, offering not just a place to sell loaves but a way to engage directly with the community. “It’s a real paddock-to-plate feel,” Will says. “They create connections. Not just between customers and businesses but between businesses themselves.”
For Nadia, bringing freshly baked bread to markets is a beautiful service, “Of course there are challenges, but the direct contact with people makes it worth it. You get to see firsthand how your bread impacts people’s lives.”

Meet Andre and Logan Howe, two adventurous brothers who grew up in the stunning landscapes of New Zealand and now call the vibrant border town of Tweed Heads, home. In 2021, they turned their dream into reality by founding Tahā Distillery, officially launching their exceptional spirits to the public in 2022.
Embracing their rich Māori and European heritage, these passionate distillers are on a mission to craft top-tier spirits infused with locally sourced botanicals from Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific region. Their goal? To create a ‘Pacific’ style of spirits that are light, approachable, and refreshingly unique, steering away from the heavy, traditional flavours of London dry or navy strength gins and plain vodkas. Each product is a celebration of one or two standout ingredients, allowing every sip to tell a story and tantalise the taste buds!
With a guiding philosophy of ‘less is more,’ the brothers have embraced a style perfectly suited to the Pacific’s sun-soaked summers and cool winters. But it’s not just about the spirits; it’s about honouring the vibrant culture, people, and ingredients that make the Pacific extraordinary. They treat their guests, clients, and customers like whānau (family and friends) and sprinkle in a dash of fun along the way!
Tahā Distillery is all about sustainability and locality. They are dedicated to sourcing ingredients from reputable local suppliers and continuously improving their practices for a better future.
After years of being gypsy distillers, an incredible opportunity arose just before Christmas—they purchased the distillery where they had been crafting their spirits, finally establishing a home and cellar door for everyone to enjoy.
"It’s thrilling to welcome visitors and share our story!"
The future is dazzling for Andre and Logan, with exciting projects brewing on the horizon. Keep an eye out for their first small-batch barrel-aged rum, set to enchant taste buds by June! Plus, they’re launching delicious premix RTDs that pair perfectly with their gin and vodka, and local collaborations that will soon be unveiled, all while continuing to bring unique twists to their lineup.
Join the boys on their thrilling journey, and let’s celebrate the flavours of the South Pacific together! tahadistillery.com.au

Imagine a region where rolling hills meet sparkling coastlines, where ancient rainforests give way to lush farmland, and where the autumn air is filled with the scent of flowering natives and freshly harvested produce. Welcome to the Northern Rivers, a haven of natural beauty and culinary delights.
For the ninth year, Northern Rivers Food proudly presents the Harvest Festival™, a month-long celebration of the region's unique food culture, stunning landscapes, and vibrant community spirit. This year's festival promises to be a truly memorable experience, with a fresh format that will take you on a journey through four distinct sub-regions, each boasting its own unique flavours and experiences.
Across four weekends in May, the Harvest Festival will showcase the very best of the Northern Rivers. Weekend one (May 3-4) highlights the Byron and Ballina Shires, with a curated Harvest Trail that winds through the picturesque hinterland, revealing hidden gems and artisan producers along the way. Enjoy a leisurely Sunday long-table lunch amidst the beautiful macadamia orchard of Summerland Farm, featuring produce harvested within 50km of the farm.
The following weekend (May 10-11), the festival shifts its focus to the Lismore, Kyogle and Richmond Valley region. Don't miss the return of Lismore's famous Eat the Street amongst the activities, offering an incredible array of food, drink and entertainment. Visit the Harvest Producers' Hub, located within the Eat the Street precinct and discover many of the region's finest artisan producers.
Weekend three (May 17-18) takes you to the stunning Tweed Shire, where you can indulge in a long-table dinner at Husk Distillery, featuring some of the region's top chefs and producers. Explore the Tweed's scenic landscapes and discover its thriving food and drink scene.
The final weekend (May 24-25) celebrates the Clarence, with more unforgettable experiences, extraordinary local produce and culinary delights in store. Enjoy freshly crushed sugar cane juice and learn about cane farming. Savour the region’s renowned seafood straight from local trawlers and indulge in the Clarence’s rich bounty.
Throughout the month-long Harvest Festival, enjoy a range of activities including farm tours, tastings, hands-on cooking demonstrations, workshops, and meet-the-maker sessions. Meet celebrity chef Paul West, of River Cottage TV fame at several events, and discover the region's best-kept secrets. In the fertile heartland of the Northern Rivers, farm-to-table dining is more than a culinary trend—it’s a philosophy rooted within our landscape and farming communities. it's where menus, shaped by the seasons, celebrate the profound connection between land, producer, and plate.
WRITTEN BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
Beyond the ethical and environmental benefits, the true highlight of the movement is the food itself. We’re spoilt here; our local markets brim with freshly harvested produce, seafood comes straight from the trawler, and chefs are on a first-name basis with the farmers who rear their livestock. Some restaurants are even built on the very farms they source from. But this ethos goes beyond reducing food miles. Simply put, when farm-fresh produce is in the hands of chefs who favour provenance over convenience, flavour reigns supreme.
LOCALE met six passionate chefs bringing the region’s freshest flavours straight to the table.
Tucked in the Bangalow hinterland, Frida’s Field is a 120-acre regenerative farm owned by visionary farmers Edward Rawlings and Jeanie Wylie. Their converted barn turned hatted restaurant, now a space where food, farming, and community intersect.
Leading the charge is multi award-winning Chef Ally Waddell, whose commitment to provenance and sustainability shapes every dish. His hyper-seasonal menu, changing every six weeks, is dictated by peakseason produce—much of it harvested mere hours before reaching the plate. Communal tables overlooking lush pastures set the stage for an unhurried three-course long lunch, where dishes like pasture-raised Angus-Wagyu beef, woodfired to perfection, and heirloom vegetables brightened with house-fermented vinegars, showcase the best of the season. The beverage list champions small-batch, minimal-intervention wines, and cocktails infused with foraged botanicals.
Beyond the plate, Frida’s Field is driven by a philosophy of working with the land, not against it. “Farm-to-table isn’t a marketing gimmick,” says Waddell. “It’s about developing strong connections with local farmers and supporting sustainable and organic practices.” He believes chefs have a responsibility to source ingredients thoughtfully, avoid endangered species, and reject mass-produced supermarket goods. “The freshness, the purity of flavour—you only get that when you’re doing it authentically.”
His passion is unmistakable, reflected in a produce-driven dining experience that is as intentional as it is flawless. fridasfield.com
True to its name, Forest restaurant in Byron Bay is immersed in nature— set within 45 acres of subtropical rainforest, where the land shapes both the setting and the plate. Here, more than 80% of ingredients are sourced from local farmers, fisheries, and artisans within a three-hour drive; celebrating provenance, seasonality, and sustainability. Every dish is an homage to the region’s rich food culture, where ethically farmed and foraged produce take centre stage.
Recently joining the Forest team, Executive Chef Tiffany Jones brings over 30 years of experience in hatted restaurants, luxury hotels, and world-class catering. Passionate about provenance, she works closely with local farmers, growers and artisans to craft ingredient-led menus, with the restaurant also cultivating its own herbs and harvesting honey from on-site beehives.
Signature dishes showcase line-caught seafood, whole-beast butchery, and native ingredients sourced in collaboration with Indigenous communities. From delicate crudos to slow-cooked mains infused with the essence of the Northern Rivers, Forest offers a refined yet relaxed take on modern Australian cuisine.
Sustainability extends beyond the plate—every ingredient is used to minimise waste, meats are ethically sourced, and all produce arrives in 100% recycled or bio-packaging. More than a meal, Forest is a conscious celebration of the land.
It’s hard to surpass the dining experience at Farm & Co. Restaurant, Cudgen. Set against 52 acres of picturesque farmscape—fields of golden sunflowers, rows of macadamia trees, and the setting sun—it’s the kind of place you take visitors you want to impress. Beyond the beauty, this is a true paddock-to-plate experience, where ingredients are harvested just metres away and every dish tells a story of time and place.
Helmed by the formidable pairing of Venue Manager, Amy Brown, and Head Chef Millie Ryrie (both formerly of Rick Shores), the mouthwatering menu is dictated by what’s fresh and abundant. Charred eggplant dip made from just-harvested produce, locally caught snapper in coconut sauce infused with kaffir lime and curry leaves, and smoked lamb shoulder with green olive tapenade burst with colour and flavour. Cocktails too, feature house-made syrups infused with citrus and herbs grown on-site. “Using whatever is in season forces you to think creatively,” says Millie. “It’s exciting and ever evolving.”
Sustainability is at the heart of it all—veggie scraps feed the worm farm and eggs come from the free-roaming hens. Anything not grown on-site is sourced from local suppliers like Tropical Fruit World, Cabarita Butcher, and Earth Beer who all align with Farm & Co.'s ethos of quality and freshness.
More than a meal, Farm & Co. Restaurant is both a wholesome and decadent sensory feast—an ode to the land and the flavours it yields.

For chef Francisco Smoje, food is a love letter to the land. His roving restaurant, Francisco’s Table, brings farm-to-plate dining to life in community halls, private residences, and countryside locations across the Northern Rivers and Gold Coast. Now focusing on bespoke catering, Francisco’s Table offers an unforgettable taste of the region at weddings and private events.
Having called the area home for over 30 years, Francisco has cultivated deep relationships with local farmers and fisheries. He also grows much of his own produce on his property in Stokers Siding, ensuring that every dish reflects the richness of the land. His menus are a feast of stories—each ingredient a tribute to the growers and artisans who shape the region’s vibrant food culture.
At the heart of Francisco’s philosophy is communal dining, where shared plates highlight the best seasonal produce. Handmade pasta infused with just-picked herbs, woodfired local meats paired with vibrant farmgrown sides, and delicate seafood dishes showcasing the freshest coastal offerings create a deeply immersive dining experience.
More than a meal, Francisco’s Table is about preserving its culinary heritage and fostering connections—between farmer and chef, and between the land and those who gather to enjoy it.

High in the Scenic Rim, The Paddock Restaurant at Beechmont Estate is a masterclass in modern Australian farm-to-table dining, where the connection between land and plate is woven into every element of the experience.
Led by Executive Chef duo Chris and Alex Norman, the kitchen champions hyper-local, sustainable, and ethically sourced produce, embracing nose-to-tail and root-to-stem cooking with an artistry that is both refined and unpretentious. Chef Chris, whose background spans Michelin-starred kitchens in the UK, curates a menu that shifts with the seasons, honouring the region’s bounty.
Expect dry-aged beef from nearby farms, ocean-fresh seafood from Southeast Queensland, house-cured charcuterie, and heirloom vegetables harvested just steps from the kitchen. Fermenting, curing, and smoking techniques speak to the restaurant’s a zero-waste ethos.
Pastry Chef Alex brings a creative finesse to desserts, transforming local produce into dishes like the Roasted Apricot Financier with apricot kernel ice cream, estate honey, and native thyme granita.
Set against a backdrop of misty valleys and rolling hills, vaulted ceilings and glass doors frame sweeping views to create a dining experience that is immersive, wholesome, and quietly luxurious. While each dish served is a masterclass in thoughtful, sustainable gastronomy and well worthy of the chef's hats they wear. beechmontestate.com.au
The crashing waves of Cabarita Beach serve as the soundtrack to Paper Daisy’s dining experience. Set within the acclaimed boutique hotel Halcyon House, this hatted restaurant by the sea is helmed by Executive Chef Andrew Milford, who brings both global experience and a deep reverence for local produce to his kitchen.
A long-standing advocate for farm-to-table dining, Milford’s menus celebrate seasonality, sustainability, and simplicity, where carefully sourced ingredients take centre stage. “The fresher the produce, the less we need to do to it to make it shine,” he explains.
The menu, inspired by its coastal surroundings, evolves with the seasons. A recent highlight includes sand whiting, caught in the mouth of the Tweed River the night before, grilled over a wood fire and served with ripe tomatoes, almonds, and Australian olive oil. Flame-kissed Glen Innes rump cap pairs with poblano chillies stuffed with confit Dutch cream potatoes. Stradbroke Island oysters shine in summer, while winter welcomes soft shell Bay Lobster, given a southern-fried twist with braised local greens and ranch dressing.
Milford’s deep connections with Northern Rivers producers define Paper Daisy’s ethos. Jumping Red Ant Farm provides a yearround bounty with produce grown in Bilambil, while Australian Bay Lobster in Chinderah ensures the finest and freshest seafood. “The proliferation of small, mindful producers in this region makes it an exciting time to be a chef,” he says.
With its elegant coastal setting, impeccable selection of minimalintervention wines, and a menu that speaks to both land and sea, Paper Daisy offers an immersive Northern Rivers dining experience.

As a dog owner, there are three little words guaranteed to spark joy: pet friendly cafe. And if the food and coffee is great too? Well, that’s a bit like winning the lottery.
WRITTEN BY CHRIS ASHTON
Thanks to the bounty of pet friendly cafes across this region, every weekend feels like an excuse to celebrate. But, more than a lonely water bowl in the corner, a true pet friendly cafe is somewhere you and your pooch feel at ease, particularly if they’re a bit anxious or excitable. Think tables away from foot traffic, room for a biiig stretch, and perhaps a dog chew or two on the menu.
Rather than leave it to you to uncover these diamonds on your own, these are some of our favourites.
Though dogs are typically after-thoughts for cafes, Pooches & Pastries is a welcome exception, with furry visitors clearly in mind from the outset. The name is a dead giveaway, while the menu of puppuccinos and dog treats alongside human friendly meals and coffee, plus an onsite grooming salon, really drive that message home. poochesandpastries.com.au
Taking your pup out for breakfast? You’ll be in fine company at BSKT, where dogs of all shapes and sizes can be seen peeking out between tables, wagging hello to passersby, or tucking into their very own ‘puppy board’: a puppuccino sprinkled with cookie crumble, with an organic bikkie on the side. bskt.com.au
All very good dogs are welcome at this Burleigh bar and cafe–open Wednesday to Sunday for pub classics, wines and cocktails. While there’s technically nothing for your pooch on the menu (though who’s to know if a chip slips off the table…), they’ll still enjoy the social vibe, with dogs allowed in both the beer garden and front terrace. localburleigh.com.au
Part fresh bread bakery, part cafe–Tucker is a hub for Casuarina locals. That includes the furry kind. From personal experience, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but the bacon butty, granola, and chorizo chilli scramble are must-tries.

True to its name, The Farm is a place to connect with nature. Poultry, pigs and cattle all call this expansive property home, alongside a trio of dining options: Three Blue Ducks restaurant, The Bread Social bakery and Baylato gelato. Naturally, dogs must be on leash at all times. thefarm.com.au
Sometimes the best finds are hidden in plain sight. That’s the case at Woods, tucked away from the main drag in Lumber Yard creative precinct on Station Street. Whether just for a quick coffee or settling in for a chinwag under the pergola, this leafy gem has all the makings of a new favourite. Don’t be surprised if staff come to pat your dog. woodsbangalow.com.au
Another notable nearby hangout is Folk – at the entrance of the pet-friendly Discovery Parks Byron Bay. Parking can be a bit scarce, but if you’re staying at the park or happen upon an empty space, it’s an ideal choice for nourishing smoothies, whole foods and coffee, with your best friend in tow, of course. folkbyronbay.com
Middle Eastern flavours are on show at this Ballina hotspot, which has fast become the go-to for a devoted pack of pooches (and their owners). Seating is admittedly a little exposed on the
footpath, but with flaky burekas filled with spinach and feta or spiced portobello mushrooms on your plate, not to mention the staff all lining up for pats, it's likely your dog won't even notice. cafebokerballina.com.au
Eclectic decor, generous portion sizes and a display cabinet overflowing with delicious pastries, cakes, salads and wraps make Dark Horse a cafe worth travelling for. Social dogs will be in their element in the outdoor dining area, while others may be happier at one of the tables lining Strand Arcade.

The Northern Rivers and Southern Gold Coast have long been havens for those seeking a relaxed lifestyle—where mornings start with a sunrise swim or a misty hinterland walk, and life moves to the rhythm of the tides. But with demand soaring and properties often selling before they hit the market, savvy buyers are looking beyond the usual hotspots to find the next big opportunities.
The southern end of the Gold Coast is evolving rapidly, and Coolangatta, Kirra, and Rainbow Bay have emerged as prime locations for those craving coastal charm without the high-rises of Broadbeach. With boutique cafes, world-class surf breaks, and an unmistakable small-town feel, these areas are highly sought after by Sydney and Melbourne buyers. Low stock levels and increasing demand for beachfront apartments and character homes make this a competitive market, with proximity to Gold Coast Airport adding extra appeal.
Banora
Just south of the border, Tweed Heads, Banora Point, and Terranora offer a compelling alternative to premium beachfront suburbs like Kingscliff and Casuarina. With larger blocks, strong infrastructure, and easy access to both the coast and hinterland, these suburbs are attracting families, downsizers, and investors alike. Properties with renovation potential are in high demand, with rental growth adding to their investment appeal.
Once hidden gems, Kingscliff, Casuarina, and Cabarita Beach have become some of the most in-demand markets on the Tweed Coast. Luxury developments like PAMA, KAI, and CABA are redefining coastal living, with limited land availability ensuring continued competition. With Brisbane and Sydney buyers driving demand, these areas are proving to be strongholds for both lifestyle seekers and investors.
Byron Bay & Ballina Shires: Buyers Returning in Force
Byron Bay remains the aspirational benchmark, but soaring prices are shifting attention to Lennox Head and East Ballina. These coastal towns offer the same laid-back charm and pristine beaches, but with more accessible price points. Meanwhile, hinterland villages like Newrybar and Bangalow are gaining popularity for their community feel and proximity to both the coast and Ballina Airport. Holiday homes and investment properties in these areas are being snapped up fast, with limited stock keeping competition fierce.
Murwillumbah & Tweed Hinterland: Space, Lifestyle & Community
For those seeking privacy and space without sacrificing convenience, Murwillumbah and the Tweed Valley offer an appealing alternative. Lush landscapes, a thriving food and arts scene, and a strong sense of community make this region ideal for families, creatives, and lifestyle buyers. With classic Queenslanders, acreage properties, and characterfilled homes still offering relative affordability, this market is one to watch.
With interstate migration fuelling demand and supply tightening, acting strategically is key to securing a property in these evolving coastal and hinterland markets.
If you're ready to find your dream home or investment property, the Compass Buyers Agency team is here to help you navigate the market and access pre-market and off-market opportunities.

In the relentless pace of modern life, home should be a sanctuary—a place to rest and recharge. Yet for many of us, clutter builds up faster than we can keep up with, turning our homes from havens into spaces of stress and endless to-do lists. This is where Sarah, founder of Zen Spaces by Sarah, steps in, transforming homes and lives with her philosophy of intentional decluttering.
Sarah’s journey began in January 2020 when she turned her lifelong passion for organisation into a business. “Yes, I was that kid who loved tidying my room and moving things around just for that fresh feeling,” she laughs. A mother of two, she had always found joy in creating order in her own spaces and helping friends and family do the same. What started as a leap of faith during maternity leave quickly grew into a thriving venture. Today, Sarah has worked with over 200 clients across northern NSW and the Gold Coast, offering a lifeline to those overwhelmed by their homes.
For Sarah, decluttering is more than just tidying up—it’s about creating a sanctuary where life feels supported, not suffocated. “A disorganised home often feels like an endless to-do list,” she explains. “There’s a mental ease that comes when your space supports you; it’s easier to focus on living, not just surviving.”
The benefits extend far beyond aesthetics. Studies show that clutter increases stress levels, reduces productivity, and even disrupts sleep. But despite this, getting started can be daunting. Emotional attachments, lack of time, and even guilt over “wasted money” often keep people stuck. Sarah’s approach? A compassionate, step-by-step process that makes decluttering feel manageable—even liberating.
Sarah’s work is about more than just organising—it’s about changing the way we interact with our spaces. “Organising means arranging what you already have,” she says. “In other words, it’s just moving the clutter around. Whereas decluttering is deciding what you truly need. It makes you more mindful of what you bring into your home.”
The final stage is where the transformation happens. Sarah cleans the space and plans its layout with care, ensuring every item has a place. Frequently used items are given “prime real estate,” while heavier or less-used belongings are stored thoughtfully. Clients often receive a mood board and product recommendations before Sarah returns to install and style, leaving the space not just functional but beautiful.
"I WAS THAT KID WHO LOVED TIDYING MY ROOM AND MOVING THINGS AROUND JUST FOR THAT FRESH FEELING."
Her work begins with a personalised consultation, assessing not just the space but how her clients want to feel in it. “It’s not just about getting rid of things—it’s about creating a home that works for you,” she says. Together with her client, Sarah starts by pulling everything out of the space, giving them a clear picture of what they own. Items are then categorised, making it easier to identify what’s essential, loved, or no longer needed.
One of the biggest challenges Sarah helps clients overcome is sentimentality. Whether it’s a box of old photos, a drawer of forgotten trinkets, or a wardrobe stuffed with clothes from another life, people hold onto things for all sorts of reasons. Sarah gently guides them through the process, helping them focus on what truly adds value to their present lives. “If you’re not using it, loving it, or needing it, its value is gone,” she says.
And perhaps the best part? “I take all the rubbish and donations with me,” she says. “No more charity bags sitting in the car for six months.” The relief is instant. “It’s like breathing fresh air,” one client shared. “I had no idea how much the clutter was weighing me down until it was gone.”
Sarah’s work is not only practical but deeply emotional. “Decluttering can be exhausting—it’s okay to ask for help,” she says. Normalising the idea of outsourcing home organisation is part of her mission. Her thorough approach takes away the mental load, allowing clients to experience an immediate sense of relief and clarity.
The momentum behind Zen Spaces by Sarah reflects a broader cultural shift. “We’re finally realising we can’t do it all,” Sarah says. “Both parents are working, life is busy, and women especially still feel the pressure to keep a perfect home. But the truth is, we don’t have to juggle everything alone.”
For those looking to regain control of their spaces, Zen Spaces by Sarah offers more than just a decluttering service—it’s a pathway to clarity, balance, and a home that truly feels like home. “Your space should support you,” Sarah believes. “Let’s create that together.”

Designing a space you truly love is about more than just aesthetics; it's about crafting an environment that feels uniquely yours. A home should reflect your personality, cater to your needs, and nurture your well-being. Thoughtful interior design blends beauty and functionality, making your space not only visually stunning but also a place of comfort and joy.
WRITTEN BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
Shantala Mack is an interior designer whose career has come full circle. Raised in Suffolk Park, her love for design was nurtured by her mother, a passionate renovator. After establishing a successful career in Melbourne and Sydney, Shantala has returned to her roots, living on the very street where she grew up. Shantala’s design ethos merges functionality with style, with a particular emphasis on creating spaces that feel personal, relaxed, and inviting.
Her recent project, The Shack at The Beach Hotel, showcases her ability to fuse local charm with modern design sensibilities. It's an extension of her love for creating spaces that feel like home, where every element has a story to tell.
Home is not just a physical space, but your personal sanctuary. A well-designed home should be a retreat, a place where you can relax and recharge, away from the chaos of daily life. Forget trends and what everyone else is doing; the best homes are those that make you feel welcome as soon as you step through the door. Spend some time thinking about what it is that make you feels cosy and grounded. Your home should be a space that nurtures your well-being and invites you to unwind, not another place filled with–tasks and endless chores. Keep your ideas simple and intentional.
Each piece of furniture and decor in your home tells a story—it could be an heirloom, a memento from your travels, or something that simply resonates with you. Beautiful, meaningful homes are places that have weaved your story together. It’s not about latest trends; it’s about looking at those important things, because it’s here your style lies. Whether it’s a hand-painted plate from a vacation or a vintage armchair passed down from your grandmother, these pieces create an emotional connection, making your home uniquely yours.
When designing a space, consider the bones of your home— the natural light, the flow of the rooms, and the surroundings. A welcoming atmosphere is often a fusion of both the house’s innate character and your personal story. These elements are the foundation that will guide your design decisions. I always start by understanding the layout of a space. Does the living room have a beautiful view of greenery? Is the kitchen bathed in natural light? These factors should directly influence how you position furniture, choose colours, and curate the overall feel of the room. Your home’s
surroundings offer invaluable clues on how to bring the space to life. For example, a beachside home naturally calls for light, airy interiors that reflect the relaxed, breezy vibe of the outdoors.
What feeling are you trying to create in your space? It’s essential to form a clear picture of what you want and choose pieces that resonate with you. Think about the items that bring you joy when you look at them, touch them, or are surrounded by them. Character comes from things that speak to you— whether it’s vintage furniture, natural textures, or a piece of art. I believe in creating spaces that are layered, comfortable, and full of warmth and authenticity. Bringing the outdoors in is also key—look at where your windows might get in the natural light or find ways to incorporate plants. Connecting with nature helps a space feel grounded and open. a retreat for both the body and mind.
Budgeting is crucial when designing a space. While it’s tempting to splurge or buy everything you like in the moment, looking at the space holistically and being strategic about where to allocate your resources, is really helpful. Invest in quality pieces that will last and make the most impact—like a high-quality sofa or custom lighting. Consider affordable items that can be swapped out seasonally for a fresh look. I always recommend creating interest with one standout piece, whether it’s a statement fabric for an armchair or a unique light fixture. The goal is to strike a balance between high-end investments and affordable choices, to create a cohesive, stylish result.
Editing is such an important part of design. It's about knowing when enough is enough and resisting the urge to overfill a space just because something is on trend. Like fashion, we can love trends, but we don’t need everything in our wardrobes— or homes. Pay attention to what you have and be intentional about why it’s there. It’s not about adding more; it’s about refining and curating your space thoughtfully. Refining your style is all about being in tune with the whole space, putting things in when there’s a reason to, and knowing when to pull back and sometimes, take away. It’s definitely a skill we can acquire. This is also where an outside perspective, or a fresh pair of eyes, can really make a difference in creating a balanced, meaningful design. shantalamack.com.au

The Gold Coast’s Flotsam Festival returns for its fourth iteration in 2025, lighting up the southern coastline with two weeks of surfinspired film and photography events from May 1–14. Set against a postcard-perfect backdrop, the festival’s pop-up film nights, photo trails, live music, and art projections celebrate the region’s deep surf culture roots. But beyond the visuals, Flotsam’s true purpose emerges—a mission to stir creative undercurrents, foster community, and bring people together through art.
Four years ago, when Flotsam first launched, the mood in Coolangatta was anything but festive. With prolonged border closures halting tourism, hospitality, and major events, local surfers, creatives, and businesses found themselves adrift. Named after a 16th-century term meaning ‘to float,’ Flotsam set out to lift the region by matching empty venues, cafes, hotels, and parklands with artists seeking space to explore their coastal connections.
Like a rolling groundswell of pixels and colour, the festival paid homage to the Southern Gold Coast’s world-class surf breaks and iconic coastline. The response was immediate—27,000 visitors across 22 event sites, with 82 filmmakers and photographers and 13 music acts featured.
Fast forward to 2025, and the region is thriving. The World Surf League’s Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro is back, international visitors have returned, and local venues are bustling. But for festival organisers, Flotsam’s mission is far from complete.
“From day one, Flotsam Festival was created to foster and spotlight artists, amplify the flourishing arts and cultural industry, and serve as a place of community connection,” says Festival Director Carolyn Emge. “In the era of social media and AI, in-person events are more relevant than ever, offering rare opportunities to truly connect and get inspired. And with cost-of-living pressures still affecting hospitality, we’re building experiences that make a beach holiday or surf comp trip even more enticing.”
Spanning Burleigh, Currumbin, Tugun, Kirra, and Coolangatta, Flotsam 2025 will feature a diverse lineup of free and low-cost events showcasing surf culture through the lens of local and international talent. Expect new and archival film screenings, photography showcases, live music, performances, thoughtprovoking forums, and technical workshops.
Festival highlights include the Flotsam Homegrown film and photography competitions, the Next Wave youth showcase spotlighting emerging talent, and Surf Girls on Film, a celebration
of women’s surf culture. Photobook launches—such as Defining Moments by Tony ‘Harro’ Harrington—will offer deeper dives into surf history, while the Focal Point outdoor photography exhibition will place iconic images back in their original vantage spots, with QR codes unlocking behind-the-scenes stories.
“For year four, the Flotsam lineup is set to deliver one of the largest ocean-inspired arts festivals of its kind,” says Emge. “The calibre of international talent from across the eras joining us will ensure this year’s exhibitions and film events are truly world-class.”
With an ever-growing calendar of events capturing the essence of surf culture through film and photography, Flotsam 2025 promises to be a must-see celebration—no matter what floats your boat. flotsamfestival.com.au

For Justin Schmith, real estate isn’t just about buying and selling homes—it’s about people, history, and a deep-rooted connection to the southern Gold Coast. His story begins long before he ever held a property listing. It started in 1946 when his grandfather secured a block of land on Miles Street, Kirra, for just 50 quid. Back then, there were only 200 families in town, and their home had the 72nd telephone line ever installed.
Growing up surrounded by the ocean, local businesses, and a tight-knit community, Justin developed an innate understanding of the place he calls home. Whether it was deep-sea fishing trips or watching his family craft custom cabinetry, every experience shaped his appreciation for the value of home—not just as a physical space, but as a feeling.
“IT’S ABOUT HELPING SOMEONE FIND THEIR PLACE, THEIR COMMUNITY, AND THAT SENSE OF BELONGING.”
At SCHMITH Estate Agents, Justin and his team bring that same personal touch to every client they work with. Specialising in residential sales, leasing, commercial properties, and off-the-plan developments, they combine cutting-edge technology with genuine, old-school service. Licensed in both Queensland and New South Wales, their goal is simple: to make finding or selling a home as seamless and rewarding as possible.
“Real estate is all about people,” says Justin. “It’s about helping someone find their place, their community, and that sense of belonging.”
Beyond transactions, SCHMITH Estate Agents is deeply involved in the local community, sponsoring schools and sporting clubs to give back to the region that has given them so much.
For Justin and his team, it’s not just business—it’s personal.
There’re quite a few quirky villages in the gorgeous Northern Rivers hinterland, but Uki ‘the village in the clouds’ is one of its most colourful. Ringed by rainforest and snuggled in the foothills of Wollumbin, it makes a popular day trip from Byron and the Gold Coast, as well as a wonderful weekend escape.
WRITTEN BY ALISON BONE
“BLINK AND YOU WILL MISS IT, UKI MAY BE A SMALL VILLAGE, BUT IT HAS A BIG HEART.”
Gary Wall, founder Bastion Lane Espresso
An iconic landmark across the Tweed and Byron Shires, Wollumbin (Mount Warning,) looms ever closer as you approach the village of Uki. Fluffy white clouds are often seen swirling around its summit, gives credence to its Bundjalung name, commonly translated as ‘cloud catcher.’ A sacred place for the Bundjalung people, some tribes say the name actually means ‘fighting chief of the mountain,’ as the thunder and lightning seen on the mountain top was believed to came from warring warriors. No matter the meaning, there is no denying that this mountain–the plug of what was one of the world’s largest shield
volcanos, active 20 million years ago–has mana.
In more recent times the tiny heritagelisted village of Uki, set in the shadow of the mountain, was born on the back of the timber and dairy trades in the early 1900s, and retains a lovely streetscape lined with charming historic buildings. Its proximity to Nimbin–site of the legendary Aquarius festival in 1973–brought a new wave of settlers and an alternative, more artistic way of life, which gives Uki much of its modernday flavour. Follow the waft of incense to Happy Herb Shop for health tonics and
tinctures, mood enhancers, elixirs and aphrodisiacs. And check out The Uki Fair Trade Shoppe with its handcrafted treasures, Illusive Wood Designs with its hand carved furniture and A Tinker’s Cuss, for hand forged knives.
The Buttery which operated until the 1960s, and still has the churner out front, sets the scene for the much-loved Uki Buttery Bazaar (3rd Sunday of the month) with live bands, local artisanal products and handicrafts. At the back of the Buttery you will find Uki Pies–reason enough to come to Uki, as the baker here has a way
with pastry that is tempting to describe as magical. Make sure to try the Spinach, Feta and Olive Quiche, Apple Turnovers and chocolate topped Anzac Slice.
Street buskers provide the soundtrack to Uki, intermingled with piano music–there’s two pianos, along with sofas in the open-sided hut in the Village Green, and everyone is welcome to play. There’s a ping pong table too, and always locals about to chat with. Uki is like that, it has an anything goes kind of vibe and a convivial atmosphere highly conducive to just hanging out.
“Blink and you will miss it, Uki may be a small village, but it has a big heart,” says Postmaster Gary Wall. Taking over the dilapidated post office in 2017, he had a vision to transform the 1909 building into a diverse space that enriched the local community. He has done so spectacularly, and the restored post office now doubles as a buzzing cafe, Bastion Lane Espresso, with its own brand of coffee roasted on site. It’s an art space too, with monthly exhibitions showcasing local artists.
Just out of town, Mount Warning Road climbs steadily up the side of the mountain passing lush, pristine scenery and ever denser rainforest. Stop for a swim at the water hole or continue to the Breakfast Creek Carpark on the edge of Wollumbin National Park. While the summit track was closed in 2022, you can still access the Lyrebird track, a short but exhilarating walk that winds through picturesque palm forest to a viewing platform.
Other nearby world heritage-listed national parks include Mebbin National Park, Nightcap National Park, Border Ranges National Park, and Mt. Jerusalem National Park, all with epic bush trails and sensational views.
Surrounded by soaring trees and sub-tropical rainforest at the foot of Wollumbin, Mount Warning Rainforest Park is a fantastic place to reconnect with nature. mtwarningrainforestpark.com

While you’re heading out to Uki, why not make a day of it and explore the surrounding tiny towns that dot the lush Tweed Valley. With winding roads, breathtaking vistas, and a generous dose of warm country hospitality, these picturesque spots invite exploration at an unhurried pace. Here’s how to make a day of it.
Nestled amidst rolling green hills, Burringbar is the perfect starting point for your tiny-town journey. The heart of the village, Broadway, offers an authentic taste of country life. Begin with a hearty brunch at Teakwood Cafe before browsing the village’s handful of shops. Highlights include The Barn, known for its homegrown produce and handcrafted goods, Heath’s Old Wares and Collectables, the largest vintage store in the area, and Burringbar Gallery offering a unique mix of traditional artifacts and global curiosities.
For foodies, Tweed Valley Whey Farmhouse Cheeses is a must–visit, offering artisan cheeses and local preserves that speak of the valley’s rich agricultural heritage. Pair your visit with a stop at the Natural Wine Shop and Bar, where boutique wines and gourmet hampers provide the perfect memento of your trip.
A scenic drive along Tweed Valley Way takes you through the charming hamlet of Stokers Siding, where you can make a note to return for a visit at Hosanna Farm Stay. Offering a classic farm experience and loads of family-friendly activities–like picnics, animal feeding, and a thrill inducing waterslide into the dam–there’s too much to do here not to make a day of it.
For now, continue onwards to Chillingham, a tiny town tucked at the base of the Caldera Range and bordered by the Rous River. Here, the historic Chillingham Store doubles as a cafe and pantry, where you can stock up on fresh produce and enjoy a leisurely meal in the garden.
Nearby, Buck’s Farm is a dream for bush tucker enthusiasts. Growing over 20 species of native edibles, including finger limes and Davidson plums, it’s the perfect place to sample relishes, jams, and unique ingredients to take home. For those seeking to connect with nature, Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat delivers with serene rainforest trails, rock pools and abundant flora and fauna.
The final leg of the journey weaves past paddocks of grazing dairy cows and along the Oxley River, leading to Tyalgum—a charming town bursting with creativity and community spirit. Ever popular on a visitor’s drawcard is the quaint Flutterbies Cottage Cafe, set in a restored heritage building. Visitors can indulge in a traditional high tea or relax in its expansive garden cafe. The space also features a gin bar, Friday night pizza spot, and boutique stores brimming with handmade treasures. Along the main street, an authentic gelato shop offers irresistible flavours made onsite, while the Tyalgum Hotel’s family-friendly beer garden and pool make it a popular gathering place. For nature lovers, the enchanting Garden of Light spans 25 acres of themed gardens, an animal menagerie, and a nursery, best experienced during seasonal tours in autumn and spring.
When it comes to the region’s tiny towns, these are just a few of the many gems in the Northern Rivers, where rolling hills and dramatic peaks meet farm-to-table delights and community charm. Each town holding its own unique appeal and inviting endless exploration.

The beauty of travel is there’s no right or wrong way to do it: as a couple, with the family, surrounded by friends or with a group of strangers you’ve only just met. There’s also great joy to be found in travelling solo, which delivers the freedom to see, do and explore exactly what you want. And, despite how it sounds, you’re not alone 100% of the time.
WRITTEN BY CHRIS ASHTON
From Byron Bay to beautiful Brunswick Heads, the Gold Coast to its emerald green hinterland, here are five exceptional bases for solo travellers.
Close enough to the big smoke yet far enough for a real escape, The Tamborine Boutique Hotel – an hour from Brisbane and 30 mins behind the Gold Coast – embodies the saying ‘everything old is new again’, after breathing new life into a 1980s motel late last year.
Thoroughly reinvented inside and out, it now sports 23 tasteful rooms with escarpment views, plus a heated mineral pool and spa, cosy nooks for reading books, and a communal lounge regularly seeing drop-ins throughout the day.
In addition to continental breakfast, travellers are given the keys to the neighbourhood thanks to a ‘Friends of The Tamborine’ card unlocking discounts and VIP treatment at local businesses. It’s a perfect icebreaker when travelling solo.
And when you’re feeling social, ‘Peacock O’Clock’ is worth setting your watch for, with the 5pm ritual inviting guests to stop for a drink, a chat or a few bites at The Tamborine’s bar. thetamborine.com.au
Carved wooden masks from South Africa, a three-panelled vignette of the Brazilian rainforest, and rugs swept up from the souks of Morocco. These curios and more adorn the walls and floors of Byron’s newest five-star escape: Basq House: a richly styled boutique hotel evoking the mood and intimacy of home, with a few elevated touches.
Each of its 32 rooms are exquisitely styled within, complemented by an outlook of the umbrella–lined pool. But it’s the offerings outside the rooms that deserve special mention.
The lobby is not just a lobby, but a living room, with lounges for meeting friends and varied games to test your skills, while the library –stocked with comfy lounges and towering bookshelves–is an inviting retreat for when your day’s explorations are done.
Flaky fresh pastries, teas and coffee are laid out complimentary for early risers, after which you can order a well-priced mix of beers, wines and cocktails as the day wears on. basqhouse.com.au
TRYP BY WYNDHAM SOUTHPORT GOLD COAST
The Gold Coast is Australia’s holiday playground: a mecca where you can eat, drink, sail, surf and shop till you drop. Towards its northern end lies Southport, a suburb which, though not typically known to tourists, is now firmly on the travel radar, following the debut of TRYP by Wyndham Gold Coast.
Open since October 2024, the sleek 4.5-star apartment hotel boasts 225 self-contained suites, alongside a rooftop pool with skyline views (best enjoyed at sunrise), fitness centre, and Italian restaurant and bar. There’s a day spa in the works too.
Another big plus is its location near Smith Street, an arterial road from the M1, meaning you can avoid most of the traffic while enjoying easy access to the likes of HOTA (Home of the Arts) and the Southport South light rail station, linking you to Surfers Paradise and beyond. trypsouthportgoldcoast.com.au
If it’s absolute beachfront you seek, you can’t go past Tweed Holiday Parks Fingal Head, nestled between the snaking Tweed River and rolling waves of the Pacific barely 15 minutes from Coolangatta.
Like all good holiday parks, a social vibe flows throughout this Tweed Coast hangout, with solos quickly finding their tribe, whether pitching a tent, pulling up the van at a powered ensuite site, or checking into a self-contained safari tent or cabin.
Though not a large town, Fingal boasts an exceptional gem putting it above many nearby rivals: the Giant’s Causeway. Like its Irish namesake, this natural rock formation is made of thousands of hexagonal basalt pillars–and you can reach it in under 10 minutes’ stroll from the park. tweedholidayparks.com.au/location/fingal-head
Towering pines lining the river, kids leaping into the water from a timber bridge, and a classic pub filled with the sound of cheers and conversation; Brunswick Heads is a quintessential family-friendly beach town, and it’s great for solos too.
Only 20 minutes north from Byron Bay, ‘Bruns’ has that small town feel where it’s easy to make friends, the river’s ideal for swimming and kayaking, and there are a myriad of boutiques and cafes in town, meaning plenty of options for exploring over a few days.
Reflections Brunswick Heads–set in a prime position alongside the tidal waters of Simpsons Creek–makes a perfect base to breathe it all in, with powered sites and deluxe cabins.

There are countless upsides to being a dog owner, from always having a loyal companion (read: shadow) at your side to a perfect excuse to get active and get outdoors. They're part of the family, which makes them a key consideration when travelling.

As a proud adoptive parent to Murphy the English staffy, he's always front of mind when I’m planning trips. Luckily, the prevalence and quality of pet friendly escapes continues to soar, meaning, more often than not, he gets to come along for the ear-flapping ride.
These are some of our local recommendations across the Northern Rivers and Gold Coast.
Novotel Surfers Paradise makes beach breaks with your pup effortless, offering Deluxe rooms with a comfy dog bed, food and water bowl and tennis ball. A dedicated lawn is also available for exercise and breaks.
In an appreciated move, pets can join you at mealtimes, with BLVD Café & Bar on the ground level home to a section for dining alongside your pet. There’s also a BBQ area that can be booked in advance.
Dogs are welcome on-leash at Appel and Lionel Perry Parks, around 5 minutes’ walk.
Things to note: dogs 20kg and under, $50 surcharge per day novotelsurfersparadise.com.au
Squirrelled away in the northern end of Surfers Paradise, QT Gold Coast goes the extra mile for very good dogs, offering a ‘Pup Yeah!’ package including a designer bed, welcome treat and a pet-approved room service menu.
That room service is a key point of difference, with steak tartare, chicken and veg, and beef and kidney a tease of what awaits your dog’s discerning palate. Though a smidge pricey (it is a five-star hotel, after all), it takes the hassle out of travelling with meals in tow.
Dogs are welcome on-leash along the Surfers Paradise Esplanade, as well as Mackintosh Island Park, just across the Nerang River.
Things to note: dogs 20kg and under, $150 cleaning fee applies qthotels.com/gold-coast
Part of the O’Reilly’s Retreat stable, Pat’s Farm is a gorgeous off-grid escape set on a working cattle farm, enveloped by the Lamington National Park. It’s a place to switch off and reconnect. And, one of its six cabins is dog friendly.
Each two-person cabin boasts a kitchenette, plunge pool and couple's hammock, plus a bottle of O’Reilly’s bubbles and even some marshmallows for toasting on your fire pit. Two bowls and a dog bed are supplied.
There’s also the option of a curated paddock-to-plate experience from O’Reilly’s, which comes with two prep-yourown breakfasts, two dinners and a fruit and cheese platter.
Things to note: dogs 20kg and under, $100 cleaning fee oreillys.com.au
A tranquil base to discover the Tweed Hinterland, Origin House Carool pulls double duty as both a place to unwind with the pup and a sensorial journey into the wonderful world of coffee.
Only a short drive from Murwillumbah, the two-bedroom villa shares the grounds of Wirui Estate coffee plantation, with owner Zeta inviting guests for a behind the scenes tour of the awardwinning property, which grows primarily for Campos’ single origin range.
Basics for a leisurely breakfast are included for your first morning, together with a bag of Wirui Estate coffee to enjoy overlooking the very plants from which it came.
Things to note: no size restrictions, pets must sleep inside at night to protect wildlife zetascoffee.com.au
The classic road trip is a holiday staple for Aussie families, with humble, small-town motels often playing a key role in that nostalgic experience. Blue Water Motel in Kingscliff is no exception–and your fur baby is welcome to join in on the fun.
Delivering vintage vibes in all the right places, the renovated escape boasts 17 light and bright queen, twin and family rooms, alongside a four-bedroom beach house, all just metres from the rolling waves of the Pacific.
An off-leash dog beach is accessible at the far end of Murphy’s Road, only 5 minutes’ walk at the opposite end of the sports fields, directly across the road from the motel.
Things to note: direct bookings only, one small pet per room, oneoff $50 fee thebluewatermotel.com.au
There’s pet friendly, and there’s Hillcrest Mountain View Retreat: an adults only B&B on 165 acres near Murwillumbah. Not only does it welcome well behaved dogs in its cottage, but there’s a gang of resident pooches offering wet-nosed affection on tap.
The cottage is designed for self-catering stays, with a full kitchen and barbeque setup, though gourmet breakfasts, produce-driven evening meals and even a private gazebo dining experience can also be arranged.
When you’re not relaxing in the pool, getting lost in a book or breathing in views of Mount Warning from the spa, Hillcrest is a great sightseeing base, with Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre a definite must-visit.
Things to note: pet friendly on request only hillcrestbb.com.au
Downtown Byron Bay can be rather dizzying in school holidays, but Ingenia Holidays Byron Bay–just five minutes out of town and located opposite the Byron Bay Golf Club–always feels like a slice of paradise. The accommodation options are diverse too.
Pets are welcomed on ensuite, powered and unpowered camping sites, as well as in Studio Cabins and the 2 Bedroom Standard Villa. There’s also a dog wash and agility park.
When in need of a bit of exercise, the dog friendly Tallow Beach is conveniently just a short walk alongside Tallow Creek and across the dunes.
Things to note: pet friendly subject to availability, blackout dates apply ingeniaholidays.com.au/byron-bay
Draped along the shores of Lake Ainsworth, a popular swimming spot infused with dark tannins from the surrounding Melaleuca trees, Reflections Lennox Head welcomes dogs in Deluxe and Economy cabins, as well as all powered and unpowered sites.
A bit like Byron Bay without the crowds, Lennox is known for its relaxed vibe, beautiful beach and fantastic surfing, with its small array of restaurants and cafes all worth biting into (nearby Shelter is a great dog-friendly option).
Reflections features a dog wash and enclosed run. Though dogs aren’t allowed in the lake or along its foreshore, there is an off-leash beach accessible via Pacific Parade.
Things to note: up to 2 dogs when booking direct reflectionsholidays.com.au
The first time I encountered Jo Armstrong’s sculptures, I was mesmerised. Among a sea of artworks at a local exhibition, her whimsical busts drew me in—women, rendered in clay, of all sizes, shapes, and expressions, sparking conversations and eliciting smiles. But beyond the charm, there was something deeper at play—a sense of levity. Don’t take it all so seriously, they seemed to say. A message hard-won from Jo’s own life.
WRITTEN BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
Jo’s world is one where swimmers pose with oversized fish, canaries perch atop the heads of elegant ladies, and blooms sprout, Medusa-like, from others. It’s whimsy and joy entwined. And it is captivating, if not hopeful. With her oversized glasses, signature headscarf and spill of wild curls, Jo is the picture of an artist. Albeit her creative journey has been anything but conventional. Before she was sculpting in clay, she was shaping spaces in a very different way—designing and constructing one of Queensland’s first straw bale homes.
Featured on the ABC and programs like Burke’s Backyard, Jo and her then-husband were pioneers in sustainable architecture, hosting workshops to share their knowledge. A highly regarded landscape designer, she created a property so stunning it was included in the Australian Open Garden Scheme. Her approach to design—building, refining, and transforming raw materials—would later influence her sculpture.
Then, life took a devastating turn. A fire destroyed her family home, prompting a move to Murwillumbah to be closer to one of her four sons. In the midst of rebuilding her life, Jo stumbled upon a new creative outlet.
“I’d always been a gardener,” she reflects, “and I wanted to make something for my new garden.” She joined a local class where participants were encouraged to create freely. Drawn to portraiture, Jo decided to craft a face in clay. “I didn’t think I was particularly artistic,” she admits, “but as I bumbled along, an excitement grew.”
That first sculpture was a revelation. Her piece was so good that friends asked her to make them one too. Then people wanted to buy her work. “I just kept making them!” she laughs.
That initial spark of joy she found, has evolved into a thriving career. Jo’s sculptures are now featured in galleries across the North Coast, and her striking works have gained a loyal following. “Sculpture elicits imagination,” she says. “Faces, especially—they draw you in, even if you don’t realise why.”
Later, Jo would face another devastating battle—cancer. But her story is anything but defined by loss. Her home in Murwillumbah reflects her vibrant and resilient spirit. The small urban block, not only transformed by Jo’s garden expertise and creative endeavours, is also a space where Jo has cultivated a thriving artistic community.
Twice a year she hosts a private exhibition from her home studio, showcasing her latest works. And here, in this creative space, she also runs monthly workshops, that are a joyful mix of camaraderie and creativity. I had the privilege of sitting in on one of her sessions, where she was demonstrating how to sculpt a nose. “The difference between a man’s and a woman’s nose is all about proportion,” she explains, prompting laughter as students examine their own creations.
“This is a happy class,” Jo says with a smile, as the group chatters and collaborates. The studio walls are lined with life drawings and paintings of the female form, while Jo’s serene-faced sculptures keep watch. Bach, her miniature poodle, yaps for someone to throw his ball. All are too engrossed for Bach today.
Anne, a student from nearby Tumbulgum, sums it up perfectly: “The dreamlike and quirky nature of Jo’s work just appeals. And Jo herself is so patient and encouraging—it’s the perfect environment to learn.”
Harking back to her straw bale workshops, Jo is a natural teacher.
“Inclusivity is key,” she says. “No one should feel left out or embarrassed if mistakes are made—I make them every single time; it’s all part of the process.”
Through it all, Jo remains steadfast in her philosophy: life is serious enough. Art, she believes, should bring joy. “I want my pieces to make people smile, to bring an element of light-heartedness,” she says. Whether it’s a swimmer with a fish or a room full of women laughing as they sculpt, Jo’s work is a testament to resilience, rediscovery, and finding joy in unexpected places.

From heartfelt diary entries to viral anthems, Lyric has captured the essence of growing up, love, and longing with her deeply personal music. With a loyal fanbase, a self-produced sound, and a knack for turning unspoken emotions into unforgettable melodies, she’s carving out a space all her own in the Australian music scene.
Described as a blend of Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish, this 21-year-old singersongwriter and self-taught producer, is captivating listeners with her raw emotion and innovative production. Her TikTok viral hit ‘Gravity’ surpassed 450K streams and sold out her first Queensland headline shows, cementing her place as one of Australia’s rising stars. Following up with singles like 'Wildfire (Make You Mine)' and 'Isabella,' her sophomore EP Nostalgia delves into the complexities of youth and fleeting moments of time.
Fresh off the success of her latest single Friends and a whirlwind year of performances, LOCALE caught up with Lyric to chat about songwriting, social media, and what’s next in her musical journey.
On your music's deeply personal themes of nostalgia and unspoken emotions, what draws you to write about these topics?
My songs are like a diary for me, which is why they’re so vulnerable and relatable. Nostalgia has been a recurring theme because it’s something I’ve always felt deeply. It’s not easy to put into words, but I try to capture that emotion whenever I can. I write about things I struggle to express in everyday life, and the songs become a way to explain what’s hard to articulate.
You’ve been writing songs for years. Do you remember the first song you ever wrote, and how does it compare to your current music?
The first song I wrote was when I was about six or seven—it was called ‘Flower Girl,’ and honestly, it was terrible! So, it’s very different from the music I’m making now, but hey, we all have to start somewhere.
‘Gravity’ went viral on TikTok. How did that moment feel, and how has social media shaped your journey as an artist?
When ‘Gravity’ took off, it was a whirlwind. It happened so fast, and suddenly, I had so many more people listening to my music. I was so grateful for the connection. Social media has been an incredible tool, especially as an independent artist—it’s helped me reach fans worldwide, and I wouldn’t be where I am without it.
You’re a self-taught producer. What was the biggest challenge in learning production, and how has it shaped your sound?
The biggest challenge is overcoming obstacles in every song. There’s always something that goes wrong, and it feels like I’ll never finish, but those moments are often when my favourite tracks come to life. I wouldn’t trade being hands-on in production—it makes the songs feel like my babies, especially with all the time, blood, sweat, and tears I put into them!
Your latest single, ‘Friends,’ touches on falling for someone close to you. Was it inspired by personal experience? What was the songwriting process like?
All of my songs are inspired by personal experience one way or another. I think we’ve all been in that situation where you like someone who doesn’t feel the same, so I wanted to write a song that captures how hard that feeling can be. The songwriting process was smooth—this song fell into place in a day or two, which doesn’t always happen!
You’ve supported artists like Griff, Mallrat, and BENEE, and played BIGSOUND 2024. What’s been your most surreal moment on stage so far?
The most surreal moment was at my Sydney headline show on the Nostalgia Tour. It was the biggest room of the tour, and the wave of screams when I stepped on stage was overwhelming. Hearing everyone sing my songs back to me for the first time was incredibly surreal.
Your EP Nostalgia dives deep into the fleeting moments of youth. If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self not to worry so much! I struggled with a lot of anxiety growing up, and I’d reassure myself that everything is going to be okay. This past year has been one of my favourites, so I’d remind myself that the future is something to look forward to, not fear.
Being based on the Gold Coast, how has it influenced your artistry and your connection to the local creative community?
I love being an artist here. The Gold Coast has such a great community of musicians, and it’s awesome being able to create music
with my best friends. The local scene is so supportive, and it’s an amazing place to be. Your fanbase is fiercely loyal. What’s the most memorable fan interaction you’ve had?
On my recent tour, a bunch of fans made me scrapbooks filled with messages and photos from other fans worldwide. I read every single message, and it made me cry. That was definitely one of my favourite memories.
What can fans expect next, now that ‘Friends’ marks the start of a new era for you?
Fans can expect more songs to dance-cry to, new visuals I’ve been working hard on, and of course, more oversharing from me on the internet!
Any exciting collaborations, tours, or shifts in your sound on the horizon?
I’ve got some exciting shows and touring plans coming up, but I can’t reveal too much just yet. I’m excited to play more shows this year, especially in places I’ve never been to before.
Favourite beach: Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise, and Burleigh Beach.
Favourite place to unwind: I love taking my dog for a walk at The Spit—dog-friendly beaches are the best!
Favourite local restaurant: Gemelli, great Italian food!
Favourite spot for fun with friends: Escape rooms! There are some great ones on the Gold Coast like Padlockd, Fox in a Box, and Lost Locks.

Over the past 18 months, Sharni Montgomery has made a remarkable impact on the Australian art scene with her evocative, nostalgic pieces. A self-taught artist and entrepreneur, Sharni’s work reflects her deep-rooted connection to the stunning coastal landscapes of New Brighton in Byron Shire, where she spent her childhood. These coastal memories shape her work, which explores the idea of rose-coloured memories and the fleeting nature of time, capturing the essence of moments we hold close to our hearts.
Sharni’s journey into the art world began humbly. While travelling and refining her craft, she initially sold cards featuring her unique designs. The path to recognition was gradual, but each brushstroke allowed her to build confidence and refine her style. As her artistic identity solidified, Sharni began showcasing her work at local markets. It was here that she began to gain traction, resonating with art lovers who connected deeply with the emotion and nostalgia in her pieces.
Sharni’s entrepreneurial spirit soon led her to offer Paint & Sip classes, which allowed her to further connect with the community. Over the past few years, she has taught more than 280 people, sharing her passion for art and creating meaningful connections with others.
Her artwork, especially her coastal seascapes, strikes a deep chord with those who feel a strong connection to Australia’s beaches. Through intricate detail, Sharni captures the shimmering waters, sweeping dunes, and lush native trees, evoking feelings of serenity and nostalgia. Each piece invites viewers to reconnect with places that hold special memories in their hearts.
With the recent opening of her pop-up shop and art gallery on Fingal Street in Brunswick Heads, Sharni has not only found a personal space to showcase her original works, limited edition prints, and beautifully crafted calendars but also created a hub for art lovers to connect.
Looking ahead, there’s no doubt this artist’s career is on the rise. Her original works are highly sought after, with collectors eagerly awaiting her limited releases, which are available only a few times a year. The next opportunity to see her work will be in May, when she presents an exclusive collection at The Affordable Art Fair in Brisbane, inspired by the coastal headlands from Noosa to the Northern Rivers.
Already capturing the hearts of many, Sharni Montgomery is undeniably one local artist to watch. artbysharni.com.au
