A TOWN CALLED MULLUM

Mullumbimby, or Mullum as the locals fondly refer to it, is a picturesque Northern Rivers town, with its own distinct style. A place that oozes charm and attracts some of the most intriguing people and businesses, this side of Sydney.

FEATURE 8
Road into Mullumbimby

Follow the Mullumbimby sign off the Pacific Highway, then take a short 10-minute drive inland, along the tree-lined, character-filled streets, that open onto breathtaking mountain views in the distance.

A quintessential country town with an eclectic twist - like the plethora of independent shops that have popped up in the quaint, art deco buildings and, more recently, the town’s old bank which has been tastefully restored into a fabulous Russian Bathhouse, complete with bank vault interiors.

The Banya bathhouse opened with gusto late last year, and is a decadent wellness spa, with all the fine trimmings. A full bar and food menu is served in the impressive dining area, or order as you soak in the luxe magnesium pools, adjacent to the steam room and sauna. Stay awhile and sip a margarita on the elegant rooftop deck.

From local farmers, heading in from the valley (outfitted in their flannelette shirts and gumboots) to pick up their weekly supplies, to an array of colourfully dressed artists and designers ordering their favourite oat milk concoction - Mullum is home. Book a weekend away and stay at Blackbird Byron (in the hills above), boasting sweeping views across the valley back to Byron Bay. The perfect place to watch the sun set by the sublime magnesium pool and enjoy home-made pizzas by the outdoor fire as night is falling.

As the sun rises, head down the hill and grab a coffee at one of the many cafés the town has on offer, like the Rock & Roll Coffee Company, a favourite amongst the locals (you may even spot a celeb or two).

Book a two-hour soak at the ever popular Kiva Spa - a hidden gem down a laneway garden path. Kiva is a Balinese-style bathhouse, with sweat lodge, Turkish hammam steam room, outdoor spas, and plunge pool - both relaxing and affordable. Grab a local $15 counter meal at the Middle Pub - decked out in true vintage style, it’s the best place to eat a chicken schnitty and watch the world go by. There’s a selection of independent shops to browse, like The Silver Lining, a vintage haven jam-packed with reclaimed designer threads and real cowboy boots.

The Middle Pub
FEATURE 9 WINTER 2023
The Banya

Across the road is the elegantly styled Cactus Hill Project bursting with the latest interior trends and the most exquisite, modern furniture. That’s Mullumbimby in a nutshell - a Bali-style bathhouse, a recycled clothing shop and a designer furniture store.

For dinner we can’t go past a crowd favourite Milk & Honey offering tasty woodfired sourdough pizzas with a lively wine and cocktail bar. For authentic Japanese try Izakaya Yu, their crunchy karaage chicken pairs perfectly with a Japanese hot sake.

On our way back up the hill to Blackbird, we stock up at Santos Organics, a health food shop and café, operating since 1978 in arguably one of the best buildings in town. There’s an organic juice bar and naturopath on site, and the shelves are packed high with local goodness.

Sourcing and supporting local runs deep through the Mullumbimby community’s veins, the weekly farmers market, is the perfect place to meet and eat each Friday. Mullumbimby Farmers Market is like a mini festival, complete with street food, performers and an assortment of the freshest, local produce.

As we wave goodbye to Mullum and pass by the town’s art deco buildings like the Corner Hotel, Ex-Services Club, Civic Club and public pool, a sense of nostalgia washes over us. We vow to come back and explore the older side of town.

We pay homage to the renowned Mullum Music Festival, that helped put the town on the map for live music. For live music, head to one of the town’s pubs, or enjoy the array of local talent that pops up at the weekly farmers market. The Middle Pub has launched ‘Balcony Beats’ with live DJ beats on the balcony of the iconic pub - the place to be when the sun goes down over the majestic, Mount Chincogan.

As we venture out of town, we stop off at a funky pop-up café and market garden along the road, adorned with a sculptured ‘LOVE’ sign. The Paddock Project is a roadside stall and garden that employs and supports, local people with a disability - community is at the heart of the project.

Kiva Spa
FEATURE 10
Mukti

Further along we turn into the industrial estate, another hive of activity - from a local brewery to a day spa to a traditional udon eatery. TOMBO is a Japanese inspired pop-up that sources local ingredients to create the tastiest miso and udon dishes.

Wandana Brewing Co. is all about fermenting local flavours to the vibration of music (you read that right!) and is the place to gather and indulge in streets eats, craft beers and DJ beats right across the weekend.

Mukti Organics (circa 2000) is proudly female owned and operated. A Mullumbimby favourite, we indulge in a facial at their newly opened and opulent beauty rooms, also in the Industrial Estate. It’s a wellness sanctuary from the moment you walk in, starting with a soothing, copper bowl foot spa and ending with a Argiletz clay antioxidant masque. Grab a take-home pot of their best sellerMarigold Hydrating Crème, a Mukti staple.

Mullumbimby is a short drive to Brunswick Heads, with the pristine river and vast coastline to enjoy. A 15-minute drive to Byron Bay and 30-minute drive to Tweed, makes the town one of the most centrally located regions in the Northern Rivers.

Take a trip to Mullumbimby, one of Australia’s most eclectic and forward-thinking, regional towns. (So much so, it even got a mention in Ozark, and had Russell Brand pledging his allegiance to the town the last time he visited).

Abundant with the flavours of the Northern Rivers, Mullum is both worldly, and at the same time community-minded - think globally, act locally. A town that gently reminds you to slow down, yarn with a friendly local and take a magic bus trip down memory lane.

MANDY NOLAN

FEATURE 14

COMDEDIAN, AUTHOR FEMINIST AND POLITICIAN

Mandy Nolan, the irreverent funny girl, is a self-proclaimed feminist, prolific writer (with five published books in total) and a mother of five. Community has always been at Mandy’s heart; she’s a spark-carrier - igniting every place she inhabits, a freedom fighter, and as light-hearted as she may seem, she means business when it comes to changing the system - starting from the top.

We recently caught up with Mandy to chat about her life post-election, her love of the Northern Rivers and her latest, creative ventures. We posed the question, will she put her hat in the political ring again and is there room for comedy in politics?

Welcome Mandy Nolan - let’s get you to introduce yourself.

I’m a stand-up comedian, writer, feminist, mother of five, and changemaker. Heads up, I intend to be more disruptive, more dangerous and more intent on shaking things up. The greatest inheritance our kids will get from us is a future and I’m prepared to fight for that.

Let’s start with you as a performer, when did you begin performing and where?

I started in 1987, at Cement Box Theatre, Queensland Uni, in a feminist cabaret. I stood on a chair and did a poem about penis envy. Then I did a comedy routine about my first period, it was awful. But I had found this wonderful place where politics and performance intersected. The trick was to make it compelling, which came much later.

Let’s talk about you as an author and journalist, from your weekly column in the local newspaper to your books. I love to write and have published five books including, Home Truths, The Full Mandy, and Boyfriends We’ve All Had. I studied journalism at The University of Queensland, but I never finished as I dropped acid before my exam. At the end of my second year, I wrote my Hunter S. Thompson inspired deep dive into Qld politics, Bjelke was premier, you can imagine the rest.

Let’s talk about you as a politician, the Greens, and the influence behind your latest show - Mandy Nolan: The Candidate.

I never intended to run for politics, I guess I never saw myself as a politician and that’s the problem with our political system - entitlement and little representation. Climate change is the biggest issue we

face and both parties are addicted to coal and gas.

We came close, as one of the three seats held over for a week - losing by just 2%. I said if I won, I’d be an MP and if I lost, I’d have a show at Melbourne Comedy Festival. Along came ‘Mandy Nolan: The Candidate’ – oh, and eventually I will win.

What was it that made you go into politics, the mission behind the madness?

I have always been someone who pushed for change from the outside, but real systemic change happens when people like me get into Parliament. This country needs a wake up, we are in a climate crisis, a housing crisis, it’s an epic fail. I don’t believe major parties have the answers, they need strong independent voices to keep them on track.

What does it take to make people laugh and how do you teach someone to be funny?

Be authentic, be generous, show yourself and speak to the moment. I can’t teach people how to be funny, but I can teach you how to create a comedy routine. Funny is in the bones; if you are boring, I can’t really help you, but if you know you are boring then I can.

You’ve lived in the Northern Rivers for decades now, what is it that you love about this region?

The wild open spaces, the ocean, and the community - the freedom to be who you are. During the floods we saw people help each other in ways that made me cry, I am proud of who we are. We don’t get pushed around, we are a fiery mob and I like that. What do you do in your spare time, away from your incredibly productive schedule?

I clean the house, I do the washing, I cook, and I do all those things to assuage my mother guilt.

You’ve got four children and a stepdaughter, tell us about ‘Mandy the mum’.

I have made a lot of mistakes, like crap school lunches, I was often late to school pick up and I didn’t do canteen. I yelled when I should have listened, but I always loved and I strived to become a better person because of my kids.

Where to from here, is it comedy, politics, or maybe comedy in politics?

For me comedy is politics, and politics is comedy. I’m still committed to pushing for change, so if politics is the way to do that, then I guess that’s my answer.

FOR THE LOVE OF TEA

Passing through the gates of Madura Tea Estate, a feeling of calm and wellbeing washes over me. Neat rows of emerald coloured tea bushes glisten and gleam in the sunshine, surrounded by rolling hills dotted with banana plantations and pockets of verdant rainforest. Translating as ‘paradise’ in the Tamil language, Madura wears its name well.

Most tea cultivated in Australia, is grown in far north Queensland, but when third generation tea planters, Michael and Norma GrantCook, arrived in the Tweed Valley in 1978, they noted the fertile soil, and a climate similar to Assam – one of the world’s premier tea growing regions – and lay down the foundations for Australia’s first sustainable tea plantation. 45 years on Madura now has over 250,000 tea plants under cultivation, produces 20 teas and is wholly Australian owned by four local families.

“This is the only estate in the country where you can experience tea being grown, harvested, manufactured, blended and packed all in the one location,” says Business Development Manager, Natalie Loemker, as we stroll through orderly rows of Camelia sinensis tea bushes. The leaves are surprisingly robust, and although slightly fragrant don’t smell at all like tea. “Tea should be pure as nature intended, with no additional flavourings or sweetness,” explains Natalie. Sustainability is key at Madura – all tea is pesticide free, watered with naturally harvested rainwater and processed in a solar panelled factory.

We cross a bridge over a small creek, enjoying the gentle breeze

and the soothing views over the property, and I am reminded of visiting a winery – the friendly team here are certainly just as passionate and knowledgeable about tea cultivation as winemakers are about viniculture. I even get invited to a tea tasting by Managing Partner, Gary Davey. It seems that the art (and the science) of making Madura Tea is all in the blending. “It’s the only way to ensure a consistent flavour profile,” says Gary, adding that Madura collaborates with like-minded tea estates in Sri Lanka, India, and Southeast Asia to create their very own award-winning, full-bodied Premium Blend. As well as quality black teas, Madura produces Camomile, Peppermint, and blends such as Green Tea with Lemon Myrtle. I am lucky enough to try a limited release Madura Single Estate Tea – direct from plantation to cup which tastes wonderfully fresh and lively.

Heading into the factory, I watch the harvested leaves being withered, then crushed. They then go straight into the dryer to produce green tea or are left to oxidise first for black tea (Yes! black and green tea come from the same bush). It’s in the drying stage that the real fragrance is revealed, and it’s incredible; sweet, floral,

DISCOVER 16
Madura Tea Plantation

and lingering. The master blender then works his magic before feeding the tea into the impressive IMA machines that produce 450 tea bags a minute. Showing me a tea bag, Natalie explains that, “Covid threw us many challenges, but we were busy in the background and managed to transition to 100% natural plant-based tea bag paper made from Manila hemp, cellulose and biopolymer, and a paper overwrap that is biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable.”

Prior to Covid, Madura ran popular estate tours and plan to start up again, there is also talk of opening a café, so watch this space. In the meantime, drop by the shop to pick up a selection of delicious tea or an artisanal tea pot, and enjoy the ambience of the only sub-tropical tea plantation in Australia.

LOCALLYBLENDED TEAS TO WARM YOU UP THIS WINTER

Byron Bay Tea Company

Byron Bay Tea Company began as a market stall in 2004, and grew organically. Founder, Sarita Merlo explains that she was always interested in the healing powers of herbs, but dismayed by the limited selection of herbal teas available, so started making her own range of organic and blended teas. “Immunity Tea is definitely my pick for the cooler, wintery months,” says Sarita. “It’s jam-packed with immune boosting herbs such as echinacea, ginger, eucalyptus and lemon myrtle – grown organically in the Channon.” byronbayteacompany.com

Mayde Tea

Naturopath, Kate Dalton, incorporates traditional herbal medicine practices in her hand-blended batches at Mayde Tea. “I truly believe that organic loose-leaf tea is one of the most effective, yet gentle ways to utilise plant magic for common ailments, and the perfect ritual to break up our busy day,” says Kate. “We see the vibrant beauty of each herb dancing in the water as we pour it from the kettle, and as we await the steeping process, we are encouraged to stop, even for a moment and practise mindfulness while nature works its magic.” Try Restore, a sweet, citrusy blend loaded with botanicals high in Vitamin C, including lemon myrtle, hibiscus, and rosehip. maydetea.com

PREMIUM RUM PROVENANCE DRIVEN

The stunning HUSK Farm Distillery sits in the picturesque Tumbulgum Valley, within the lush caldera surrounding Mt Warning in Northern NSW. It’s the fertile volcanic soil of the land upon which the distillery grows its own sugarcane, making HUSK Australia’s premier farm to bottle distillery.

Once 150 acres of cattle and cane farmland, reimagined and lovingly transformed by owners Paul and Mandy Messenger, and their daughters Harriet, Edwina and Claudia - whose vision was to create a premium, farm to bottle agricole rum with a unique Australian expression.

The heart and soul of this family and their distillery is about provenance – the sense of place. And it’s this connection to the land, and commitment to sustainable land management (through minimal intervention farming practices, the use of solar energy and rainwater to process the sugarcane, and careful waste management) that has seen the team at HUSK become trailblazers when it comes to creating an eco-responsible product that truly reflects the rich terroir – land, climate, soil and people – where it’s made.

Understanding the increasing concern of consumers about where and how their favourite products are created, has seen HUSK fill a gap in the market for those wanting to support local growers that have a positive environmental impact. “Our farm to bottle method is all about ensuring, at every step, we’re treading lightly on the earth and not contributing extra waste”, says Paul.

And the result: Two widely renowned colour changing INK gins (born of a

risky botanical exploration whilst Paul waited for his cane crop to grow), and HUSK’s undoubted heroes - four stellar rum blends, masterfully reflecting the seasonal differences in each harvest, with flavours directly connected to the place and techniques of production. From the original, HUSK Pure Cane - distilled from 100% fresh cane juice, and crowd favourite, spiced Bam Bam - infused with roasted wattle seed, native ginger, dried orange, vanilla, cinnamon and golden berries and finished with a pinch of sea salt, to the newest member of the rum family – HUSK Rare Blend, a sublime combination of fresh cane juice and the rich smoothness of cane honey, sub tropically aged in small barrels that capture tasting notes of ripe fruit, honeysuckle, vanilla, oriental spices and toasted oak. “We want our rum to reflect a unique style characterised by our part of the world – our climate, geology, people, and sustainable processes. Similar to tequila or wine, the quality of the end product is reflective of our care for this land,” notes Head Distiller Quentin Brival.

To fully appreciate the magic and meaning of HUSK Rum, a distillery tour is a must. Open to the public seven days a week for lunch and cocktails, the team at HUSK are passionate about building people’s connection to the land and products they enjoy. With tours running

from Wednesday-Sunday, you can get a behind-the-scenes look – from farm to distillation – of how the spirits are produced before enjoying a tasting in the Barrel House. Afterwards, you’ll want to linger on in the lush surrounds and enjoy the sights, sounds and taste of sustainability against one of the country’s most beautiful backdrops.

LONG LIVE THE KOALA

A true Australian icon, koalas are one of five most globally recognised, and loved animals - up there with the elephant, the whale, and the lion. So how did Australia’s beloved mascot come to be endangered in NSW? And what role can we play in keeping the species alive?

We visit FRIENDS OF THE KOALA in Lismore to find out.

Millions of koalas once clung to treetops across eastern Australia, but human impact has taken a massive toll, and in 2022, the northern koala species which inhabits NSW, Queensland and the ACT was officially declared endangered. The problem started in the late 18th century, with a brutal fur trade that killed several million koalas, and reduced the population by at least 80%. Drought, disease, and bushfires have further decimated the species – more than 6000 koalas died in NSW alone during the 2019/20 bush fires. Habitat loss is now the gravest threat. As tree-dwellers, koalas rely on eucalyptus, melaleuca and allocasuarina for habitat and food, and constantly roam looking for the best leaf in the right tree. But with rapid urbanisation and the clearing of forests, their habitat is continually fragmented, carved up by roads and houses, making koalas vulnerable to cars and dogs.

At the frontline of koala conservation in the Northern Rivers is Friends of the Koala (FOK), a non-profit organisation

set up in 1986, with a mission to protect and preserve koalas and their habitat. Operating the largest koala hospital on the east coast, FOK runs a 24-hour rescue hotline, and rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured koalas across the region.

MYTH BUSTING

No, koalas do not get stoned or drunk from eating eucalyptus leaves. A diet of leaves provides little energy, so koalas need to sleep a lot.

Jennifer Ridolfi, formerly a National Park ranger, now Volunteer Coordinator at FOK, shows us around, starting with pointing out a wild koala in the fork of a nearby tree. Wild koalas are often seen in the soaring gum trees that surround the centre – I wonder if they sense that this is a safe space? There are 17 koalas in care when we visit; some have chlamydia, others have been attacked by dogs, or

orphaned. 42 koalas were hit by cars on our roads between July – December in 2022, which is quite shocking given the real danger of extinction. We learn that young Kookie, whose mother was run over in September 2022, was released just a few days before our visit, and two more koalas will be heading back to the bush soon. “I can never get enough of the releases,” says Jennifer with a smile. A true wildlife warrior, she has spent much of her life rescuing and rearing kangaroo joeys and describes how, “A kangaroo will flick its leg when its released, while a koala will bound up the tree.” Sadly though, there isn’t always a happy ending, and euthanasia is sometimes the only option. While small tours of six can be arranged at the facility, Jennifer is quick to point out, “This is a hospital not a sanctuary. Keeping koalas wild is the goal.”

Volunteers are the lifeline of FOK, and Jennifer coordinates a team of 250, who do everything from cleaning runs, to cutting leaf, operating phone lines and rescuing. I chat with Susan Monkley, a volunteer

supervisor and rescuer who tells me, “If we don’t start doing something the koalas won’t be around anymore. How awful would that be?” While a chlamydia vaccine is showing promising results in helping prevent the spread of this crippling disease which can lead to blindness and cystitis, there is no easy fix for habitat loss. But as Susan says, “Every little bit counts.” Her advice, “Slow down on the roads, drive wildlife aware and if you do hit a koala or see an injured koala, report it immediately so it has a chance of survival.” She adds, “Maintaining interconnected habitat is also crucial, if you regenerate, koalas will come back.” So, if you have property, reach out to FOK or Bangalow Koalas, for advice on planting koala food trees. You can also report sightings of healthy koalas on the FOK website. Healthy koalas are alert, move well, and have thick coats, clear eyes, and a dry bottom. A koala in distress may appear lethargic, disoriented, or unresponsive. It’s important, says Susan to call FOK. “Do not attempt to handle the koala yourself, as they can be dangerous if they feel threatened or stressed.”

A TASTE OF ASIA ON THE COAST

We’ve taste tested an impressive list of Asian inspired eateries from across the Northern Rivers, uncovering traditional favourites in the north, and an array of modern, Asian fusion in the south - from bustling Bang Bang in Byron Bay to the moody hues of Spice Den in Casuarina, to Brunswick Heads’ latest and tastiest Trouble San, just to name a few. We’ve also added a handy ‘Top 10’ takeaway guide that includes homemade gyoza, the freshest sushi, and the most authentic Nepalese we’ve tried outside of the subcontinent.

DINE 28
Trouble San

Follow along, on our journey of Asia in the Northern Rivers below - the region boasts an abundance of spicy eateries to warm the cockles this winter.

ASIAN BAR & DINER

Byron Bay is the original home to the ever-popular Light Years Asian Bar and Diner, with locations popping up in Burleigh, Newcastle and Noosa.

A recent move from the Bay Laneway precinct to the uber cool Jonson Lane, the brand new, reimagined venue is chic and modern in design, with a refined palette of peach and clay hues. The stunning fitout remains a side act to the venue’s star – the food. A lively bar, with the tastiest cocktails, like the Lola Paloma, Kiwi and Matcha Margarita and a traditional Piña Colada, to quench the Asian spices.

And the menu shows no subtlety. We taste test the Miso Corn, Firecracker Chicken and Prawn Toast Donuts, paired with an assortment of fresh dumplings and bao buns – the verdict, a punchy burst of flavours. lightyearsasiandiner.com.au

BY THE MOON

Moonlight is the newest foodie sensation on the Bay Lane block and is the funky little sister venue to Light Years. Tucked down the lane, the venue has a modern, monochromatic, and intimate aesthetic, and a spacious alfresco deck, with inside bench seat dining.

Billed as a Hibachi Grill and Wine Bar, Moonlight has raised the Asian fusion bar by reinterpreting flavours from classical Japanese cuisine into unexpected and punchy dishes. The wine bar has been stocked with a thoughtful selection to perfectly pair with each dish and has a daily Nomikai (Japanese Happy Hour).

We delight over the Spanner Crab Rolls, crispy Chicken Wings with Moonlight Togarashi, and simply can’t go past the Yuzu Basque Cheesecake with house-made salted caramel to finish. moonlightbar.com.au

ASIA BY THE RIVER

Trouble San is the talk of Brunswick town, recently popping up on the corner, next to the bridge that crosses the river.

Its Japanese fusion in the heart of Brunswick Heads, with a curated drink menu that includes Japanese Barrel Aged Boulevardier on tap, yuzu and lychee cocktails, and a tasty afternoon high tea sour. We pair our drinks with a Spicy Edamame, a platter of fresh Scallop, Tuna, Salmon, and Kingfish Sashimi, followed by a Fish Yukhoe (we can see the sea). troublesan.com

IZAKAYA ON THE COAST

Not just one, there’s two traditional Izakaya bars, and we’ve tried them both. Izakaya Potts in Pottsville and Izakaya Yu in Mullumbimby (same owners) are inspired by Japanese small bars (Izakaya), mixed with a cool, coastal vibe.

Izakaya Potts may be small and unassuming, but it packs a mighty punch in flavour. All about the charcoal hues, hot sake and teppanyaki-style menu, the friendly staff greet you through the soft, curtain entrance.

We order a steaming, tasty miso soup with spicy, fresh edamame beans and the most tender beef dish, washed down with a Japanese beer to finish.

Izakaya Yu in Mullumbimby has a neighbourhood feel, it’s a meeting place for the locals, with a full sake and yuzu bar. Complemented by traditional dishes like delicious Agedashi Tofu, and an assortment of tasty tempura to entice - we opt for the ‘special of the week’, Octopus Carpaccio - it delivers on all fronts.

A DEN OF SPICES

Further up the road in Casuarina, we try Spice Den, a bustling restaurant, located in the Oaks Santai Resort. The popular dining spot has been going strong for many a year and is a firm favourite with day trippers to the region.

Inspired by the moody lights and interiors of an Asian den, Spice Den is all about fresh local flavours fused with traditional spices.

Offering outdoor (by the pool) dining and an inside dining hall, with a menu designed to share. We share the Soft Duck Pancakes and Sashimi White Fish, a tantalising Hot Green Curry of Prawns and the most tender Salty, Crunchy, Sesame Squid, with a complementary Coconut Gelato palette cleanser to finish. spiceden.com.au

ALL THE BANG IN BYRON

Bang Bang is heralded as one of the Bay’s finest, bursting with authentic flavours, banging DJ beats and a wicked wine and cocktail list.

Taking pride of place on the corner of Fletcher and Byron Street, with its ambient lighting, warm mustard tones, timber fittings and luscious greenery. The openplan dining and interactive kitchen lead to an outdoor dining area, to suit the temperate climate.

We try the Chicken Larb, Sticky Braised Beef and Bangkok Fried Rice, as authentic as they are delicious - Bang, Bang is so popular they’ve opened another one in Noosa.

INDIA AT SALT

Darbaar Restaurant, located in Salt Village, Kingscliff, offers an array of traditional Indian dishes. There’s a coastal twist to the menu, and word on the street is the Goan Fish is a crowd favourite.

The dining space is alfresco style with clean white lines to suit the seaside vibe, and just enough Indian trinkets to finesse the space. It’s in the food where the colour sings and we opt for traditional dishes like

We top off the evening with a scoop of house-made Pistachio Kulfi - a creamy, traditional Indian ice-cream - and sip a locally infused cocktail to finish. darbaar.com.au

ORIENT IN THE BAY

A firm favourite of the Bay, Orient Express is Asian fusion by the beach. Local Chef Tippy is a renowned cook that’s been in and around Byron Bay for many years, his trusty following speaks for itself.

There’s a traditional Yum Cha on Sunday with all the authentic trimmings. For dinner we try the succulent, Peking Duck Pancakes, Laos Crispy Rice Salad and Bang, Bang Chicken - it’s all delicious.

A thoughtful wine, beer and cocktail list complements the spicy flavours - hot tip, request the mildest version of each dish. Located on the ocean end of Fletcher Street, the inside/ outside dining options capture the sea breeze and herald a dreamy waft of Asian spice.

NORTH BYRON VIBES

Surrounded by native bushland and infused with a relaxed and friendly coastal vibe, North Byron Hotel is one of the bay’s hidden gems, a tropical oasis serving up sensational food and drinks with plenty of local flavour.

DINE 32

In 2021, Licensee Jedd Rifai took over the old Sunrise Bistro, removed the ‘no dogs allowed sign,’ and renamed it the North Byron Hotel. His vision was to transform the venue into a community meeting space for friends and family to get together, a place that felt like home. The result? Contemporary coastal interiors accented with large potted palms and fiddleleaf figs, and a welcoming, laid-back vibe highly conducive to lingering.

We visit on a cool autumnal day and take a table in the sundrenched garden brimming with vibrant edible flowers, continental herbs, bright red chillies, and vine covered trellises dangling with ripening passionfruit. Byron Bay central is just a five-minute drive, but here in this lush sub-tropical bushland setting, it feels like a world away.

Featuring restaurant quality food at pub prices, the menu showcases sustainable Northern Rivers ingredients, with 90% of produce sourced from within a 350km radius. That means fresh off the boat seafood, fresh from the field vegetables and the region’s best artisanal produce. Share dishes – including enticing vegetarian options – are the focus, and the beautiful woodfired oven that takes pride of place in the gleaming kitchen produces sensational pizzas (gluten free available). The Woodfired Bread is also a must-try – served warm, drizzled in truffle oil, and accompanied by a tasty garlic dip finished with chilli-infused local honey. Whole BBQ Chicken is woodfired too, as are the big, juicy Local King Prawns served with nduja butter and lemon myrtle verde. Our favourite dish is the wonderfully fragrant Woodfired Eggplant, served with a memorable caramelised miso and tahini dressing and topped with herbs from the garden. More in the mood for a hearty burger, healthy salad, Market Fish or Chicken Parmigiana? You will find those too.

On the drinks side of things, we love the Coconut Margaritas made with 1800 Coconut Tequila. Local spirits and beers are plentiful, and Happy Hour is generous, including $10 Margaritas from 3-5 Monday to Friday. And with a courtesy shuttle bus from 6pm, you won’t need a designated driver. The wine list, curated by in-house sommelier Ellie Byers, features some great Italian wines, and thoughtful local biodynamic drops too. We share a bottle of Jilly Banana Girl from the Skin Contact selection. Bright, tangy, and delicious with food, it is also minimal intervention and made just up the road in Clunes. All wines, and many more besides, are available at the adjoining boutique North Byron Liquor Merchants, where Julz Recsei presides over in-store tastings and an extraordinary collection of craft beer, wine and spirits - including a staggering array of agavebased spirits.

Weekends At North Byron Hotel are lively and kick off with breakfast from 7am with dishes like Smashed Avo, Brookfarm Granola Bowls and perfectly executed Eggs Benny. For something a little different, sign up with Zephyr Horses for a Saturday Pub Lunch Tour or Sunday Brunch Tour and enjoy a scenic ride through the forest to the hotel. You will also find live music and DJ sets in the afternoons and evenings. Check the website for weekly events and more details.

SPLENDOUR TIME COME ONE, COME ALL!

The massive line-up for ‘Splendour in the Grass’ has just been announced and the Locale team are pumped to say the least. The Northern Rivers is home to one of the most epic, live music festivals in the land - and it’s a short trip down the road.

We made the journey last year, amongst the mud, we had an absolute ball. The musicians were on fire, the punters were fired up and the Splendour team pulled off the event, despite the odds being stacked against them.

A festival of the Splendour scale is all about engaging leading acts from across the globe, working with the local community and bringing hordes of music lovers together - it’s a vibe.

Just announced, the sensational Lizzo will make the pilgrimage across the globe for the 21st Splendour in the Grass. 4x Grammy Award-winning Lizzo is a talented songwriter, flautist, rapper, and singer. Her popular single ‘Truth Hurts’ was named by Rolling Stone as one of the ‘500 greatest songs of all time.’

The name on everyone’s lips across the planet, is Scottish singer and songwriter, Lewis Capaldi - awarded the critics’ choice in 2020 at the Brit Awards. With a voice that’s been here before and mesmerising lyrics, Lewis has a unique stage presence - and is sure to bring all the feels to Splendour this year.

Along with crowd favourites Mumford & Sons, who have just announced an exclusive show for Splendour in the Grass, to add to the stellar international line-up. Mumford & Sons live shows are electric, busting out all the hits, plus a whole lot more.

Splendour is all about supporting

Australian musicians and giving local artists a platform to perform. The national pool of talent this year delivers, with the likes of Flume, Hilltop Hoods, Pnau, Ball Park Music and Skeggs to name a few. Flume is bringing it home with an exclusive Australian show at Splendour, celebrating 10 years of Flume. Following the success of his debut album in 2012, a Grammy Award in 2017 and sell-out shows across the world, Flume will bring a collaboration of his finest to the festival. There’s plenty to explore in and around the Splendour parklands, from epic musicians on the Main Stage, to stand-up comedians and artists in the Splendour Forum and Science Tent.

A plethora of DJs bust out the beats in themed bars and eateries, along with some of the best local street food vendors from

across the region. Relax in the Bohemian Lounge, Rainbow Bar and Destination Bars. Fun for all the family, there’s a creative space for the kids (and parents) to unwind at ‘Little Splendour’ and there’s plenty of space for the family to camp out on the festival grounds.

For a more luxe camping experience book one of the latest ‘Wow Tents’ - an array of decked out bell tents to retreat to inbetween sets. For the DIYers amongst us there’s on-site camping options, or book the ‘Splendour Tent City’ with exclusive amenities like toilets and showersthat’s us.

AN INDEPENDENT LOVE

Possibly the only thing better than hunkering down on a cold winter’s day with a good book is the joy of seeking out your next great read. There’s nothing quite as magical as roaming the shelves of an independent book shop - the heady scent of paper, the wonder of an intriguing cover, the hook of a back page blurb - book lovers get it. It’s where magicians double as book sellers, creating illusion, conjuring intrigue, and uncovering the stories you least expect along the way…

Boardwalk Books KINGSCLIFF

What happens when a Brisbane-based businesswoman is widowed and decides that she doesn’t want to slip into a retirement of playing golf and Mah Jong? She moves to a pretty seaside town-filled with family holiday memories - and decides to lean into her passion for reading and words by buying a bookshop! With a personal story that could easily read as one of the very novels she sells, Maryann Kirk has owned and nurtured the beloved and iconic Boardwalk Books on Kingscliff’s main strip since 2017. “What better thing to do in life than share the things you love and are passionate about with others?” she says. It’s a beautiful ideal and Maryann’s generosity and love are evident - the shelves burst in glorious colour and the staff are all knowledgeable and on hand to help, even the greeting cards are quirky and quick to bring a smile. The shop also doubles as a space for author visits, book launches and book clubs, “Which are a wonderful way for those new to the area to become part of the community.” Indeed, Maryann clearly has her hands and heart full, and the local community is her beneficiary.

Bruns Books BRUNSWICK

If you’re looking for true bookshop appeal, you cannot go passed Bruns Books where charm is packed abundant. Books are piled high on antique chairs whilst rows of second-hand delights and new release wonders line fairy-lit shelves beckoning to be roamed. You’ll find a cosy adjoining room, brimming with the kids’ faves and, whilst they’re ensconced, you can fall into the comfy sofa for your own skim reading indulgence.

I come to see Bruns’ owner Lisa (the locals know her as Lou), and marvel at the steady stream of patrons, even on a rainy Wednesday. In between our stop/start chat it’s evident Lou’s heart and soul lay here. She’s generous of spirit, happy to chat, happy to help, and her clear wordy knowledge abounds. “I come from bookish people”, she laughs. After a stint in Canada with her family, Lou returned home and used her career in media and love of words as a segue to purchasing a bookshop in the heart of Brunswick – a quaint little store which began its life in town as the historic Commonwealth Bank. “We were due to open just as the covid lockdowns began in Sydney”, says Lou. “It was not ideal! But the balls were rolling so we had to press ahead.”

It may have taken awhile for the seeds to shoot but Lou is content. “I intend to be here for the long haul, so I don’t mind going slow and steady.” And isn’t that what reading is about - slowing down and being in the moment. At Bruns Books there’s always a spot on the green couch to sit a while.

Uncle Peter’s Books CLUNES

There could be none more worthy of occupying the quaint 100-year-old cottage on the Clunes Main Street than Uncle Peter’s Books, which brims, quite literally, with a treasure trove of over 25,000 second-hand books of all categories, ranging from Art to Architecture, Philosophy to Poetry, to the holy grail for every book enthusiast - first editions.

From its humble beginnings, Kath and Russell Barker’s small offering of second-hand books (sold at the back of Bangalow’s Country Village Crafts store) soon gained a reputation for excellence and amassed a local, interstate, and international following. ACTIVEWEAR WITH CONSCIENCE

We are an active nation, and we take our movement seriously. We exercise on pristine coastlines, in open fields, through national parks. We are a conscientious bunch and demand our active and leisurewear be ethical, sustainably produced and planet friendly. We want the highest quality, colourways that are mood lifting, and options that are versatile so we can transition seamlessly from the gym to a coffee date, to a zoom call as we work from home. Where better to look then, for fashion forward, planet conscious designs, than the nation’s sustainably spirited wellness capital - Byron Bay.

Divine Goddess SHOP 40

LOVE YOUR BODYLOVE THE PLANET

When BAY Active says their activewear is ‘sustainable, ethical, and made by the best in the business’ it’s not just lip service. With a motto of LOVE YOUR BODY –LOVE THE PLANET and an ethos that runs deep, this local Byron brand is purpose driven and committed to producing more than just stylish activewear. “Yes, we want to create comfortable, high performance and fashionable yoga and activewear, but we are also dedicated in our rebellion against fast fashion” says brand owner and Creative Director Helen O’Carroll. Ticking all the boxes when it comes to making a real difference, from the materials usedmerino wool from ‘happy Aussie sheep’, certified organic (GOTS) cotton thread from India and the highest standard sustainable bamboo - to the production methods, which are transparent, ethical in practice and 98% made in Australia. This is all-round excellence created on our doorstep, and one brand you will feel good wearing. bayactive.com.au

A DAILY PRACTICE

Based on the personal yoga practice of yogi Susi Plesser and husband Gil, the creation of Divine Goddess is a direct outworking of the beauty their lifestyle brings them. “We live our business as we live our yoga; a daily practice that supports and empowers ourselves, others, and the planet in every way.”

What began in 2002, as a small stall at the Byron Bay markets selling a handful of handmade yoga bags, eye pillows and yoga mats, has grown into range of stunning, eco-friendly yoga wear and yoga mats that are made from high quality recycled fabrics and materials, and designed for a high-performance practice combined with beauty. Now with three stores and over 100 staff members, Divine Goddess continues to work only with ethical manufacturers and designers - ensuring the practice of yoga is upheld.

When it comes to finding the most comfortable yoga clothes, choosing apparel that has been designed and tested by yogis just makes sense. With comfort, support, lightness, and breathability at the top of the listit’s also their stunning colours in earth, jewel and vibrant lolly tones that can’t help but lift your spirit. divinegoddess.net

FEEL THE DIFFERENCE

After working in Byron’s fashion industry for over 10 years, Ann Walsh had heard customers making the same comments time and again. They wanted comfortable clothing that fit all body shapes and sizes. Taking their feedback to heart Anna looked at creating her own versatile designs in keeping with the sustainable and ethical attitude commonplace in the Byron Bay community. “Bamboo became an obvious choice”, she said. “It is the most sustainable choice for slow fashion and is a miracle product in terms of comfort, breathability, drape, and versatility. It even supplies its own UV protection!” Bamboo is often referred to as the ‘smart fabric’ for its natural ability to keep warm in winter and cool in summer. Its moisture wicking, naturally antibacterial and fungal properties also make it the perfect fabric for working out in.

Bodypeace Bamboo has since expanded into six boutique stores and grown into a range of versatile pieces in classic staples and limited-edition designs – which include lounge and yoga wear – that are luxuriously soft, stylish, durable, and trans-seasonal. With separates that can be interchanged, reversed, and taken from the office to a yoga class or to an evening out. Perfect for the body, gorgeous for the planet. bodypeacebamboo.com

INDUSTRY DISRUPTORS

The opulent flagship store of cult activewear brand Nagnata, housed in the new Jonson Lane precinct of Byron Bay, is visually stunning in every way. This luxury brand, that elevates leisure and sportswear to a new level of sophistication, was started in 2017 when sisters Laura May and Hannah Gibbs launched their first ready-to-wear collection of functional activewear into the market.

Seeking to challenge the outdated approach of manufacturing synthetic sportswear, the sisters made it their mission to disrupt the industry. Their use of natural fibres and desire to ‘do better’ in a world of fast fashion and unethical practice, has seen Nagnata become pioneers of fabric innovation and social consciousness. Firmly rooted in sustainability, it’s their considered approach to design, and earnest care for people and the planet, that has birthed a celebration of inclusivity, diversity, and culture in a firework display of jewel toned knits and avant-garde designs. nagnata.com

We talk to Nicole Abbott from Coastal Abode Properties, our go-to local real estate expert and property styling maven, about her exciting boutique service and the stabilising of current market trends.

REGAINING CONFIDENCE

IN AN ADJUSTED MARKET

The property market in Northern NSW has been through some ups and downs over the past few years, but the current situation is looking positive. Despite 10 straight interest rate rises which have seen an official rate rise by 3.5%, property prices have not only  stopped falling but appear to have stabilised. The Reserve Bank of Australia paused its aggressive interest rate rises at the beginning of April, which could mean we may be moving into the next phase of the property cycle. We don’t expect a rapid recovery, as the next stage of the cycle is the stabilisation phase. However, we are seeing vendors gain confidence at the adjusted selling prices, and when homes are priced correctly and in line with the current market, they are gaining momentum and selling.

The market is back to a more normal pace, and interest rates have slowed, with the media hype surrounding them decreasing. This means those who have been ‘sitting and waiting’ are gaining confidence and may start moving. It’s essential to remember that regardless of the interest rates and the market adjusting, our area has seen huge growth. In fact, rentals have become more accessible, with the rental market having an adjustment, and it’s the first time we’ve seen rental signs out in a long time.

In this market, it’s vital to deal with an honest agent who will give you real facts and not feed you what you want to hear to win a listing. This means you will base your next move on realistic expectations and, in turn, get a positive result faster.

When it comes to choosing a real estate agent, it’s important to consider their approach to sales. A real estate agent who prioritises quality over quantity can offer several advantages. First and foremost, a quality-focused agent is more likely to provide personalised attention and guidance throughout the home buying or selling process. At Coastal Abode Properties we take the time to understand your unique needs and preferences and work diligently to find the right property or buyer for you. Additionally, we have a deep knowledge of the local market and a network of trusted professionals and are therefore able to provide valuable insights and recommendations to help you make informed decisions about your real estate transactions.

In conclusion, the property market in Northern NSW is showing positive signs of growth, and it’s a good time for vendors to consider listing their properties. With the right approach and an honest real estate agent who prioritises quality, both buyers and sellers can make informed decisions and achieve their desired outcomes.

A WORLD OF DISCOVERY ON OUR DOORSTEP

If you’re a Northern Rivers local you’d be forgiven for assuming that North Star Holiday Resort at Hastings Point was just another holiday park for the many tourists who vacation in this stunning seaside town. But appearances can be deceiving and there is so much more than meets the eye when it comes to ticking local boxes too. My family and I went to discover what’s hidden inside for us all.

Marine Discovery Centre

Did you know that North Star is home to one of Australia’s largest, privately funded marine museums? If you head up through the park, you’ll come across the wonder of The Marine Discovery Centre. Recently refurbished, this sophisticated display of world class marine and coastal exhibits, is as impressive as it is educational.

The legacy and life’s work of passionate environmentalist, marine biologist and teacher Ted Brambleby, whose vast specimen collections from our unique littoral shoreline provide the basis of this educational wonderland. Designed to inspire and help visitors understand how our vital eco systems work; state-of-the-art light and sound technology, digital interactive displays, and hold-in-your-hand opportunities (of some amazing salty sea creatures), serve to enhance the fun and learning experience for all ages. The Eco-Guide imparts a wealth of knowledge during this two-hour immersive experience, and we leave with minds blown and a deeper understanding of the fascinating ecological paradise we have right on our doorstep.

Ripples Licensed Café

After our morning of education, we’ve worked up an appetite. We make the most of the ‘Admission and Lunch’ offer North Star has available - a fabulous online deal which includes entry to The Marine Discovery Centre plus lunch afterwards - and head over to Ripples Café, tucked in behind the BP service station. Another element of discovery is the expansive licensed dining space with loads going on for everyone. The meals are generous, affordable, and family friendly (not to mention delicious), with a sure-to-please ‘Little Rippa’ menu, and plenty of outdoor seating options by the palm trees - giving true tropical vibes.

If you feel like lingering, grab a spot on one of the outdoor lounges and stay on for Happy Hour – you’ll be glad you did. From 2-4pm daily enjoy $5 Stone and Wood beers, $12 cocktails, and a tapas menu from just $10. Dishes are fresh, vibrant, and flavourful and the drinks generous and yummy!

As avid supporters of our local musicians, the team at Ripples also provide live music on their huge undercover deck. Surrounded by the fairy light-wrapped palms you can enjoy the beats between 6-8pm every Friday evening and from 2pm on Saturdays. If you’re popping in with mates, pull up a seat at the bar, where the bifold windows push back and you can perch and enjoy the entertainment. With the extensive à la carte menu and range of indulgent cocktails, it’s the perfect atmosphere for weekend unwinding. We’ve discovered at North Star, there’s something for everyone – locals included!

I had really bad teeth growing up and wore braces for five years – it transformed my life!” she explains. If your child needs treatment, it’s worth checking with reception to see if they may be eligible for the Child Dental Benefit Scheme (CDBS), which can offer a maximum benefit of $1,052 per child over a two-year period.

For those with dental phobias, Oasis has the option for sleep dentistry or twilight sedation, which makes for a relaxing, comfortable, and dream-like experience. While those looking

for a smile makeover may want to consider cosmetic dentistry combined with anti-wrinkle injections for an all-inclusive smile enhancing treatment.

Opening its doors in 2021, Dr Trevor explains, “We wanted to settle into a community that has lots of heart and soul and is a beautiful place to live.” Pottsville has proved to be the perfect choice, and when the pair aren’t serving the community at the studio, you will often find them out on the waves – both are avid kite surfers.

48 Gaia Retreat & Spa
ESCAPE
WRITTEN BY ALISON BONE

Some say it’s the magnetic volcanic rock that lies beneath the surface of the land, others say it’s the ancient songlines that runs across it. No matter what you attribute it to, there is a palpable energy to the Northern Rivers region – often referred to as the healing heartland of Australia. We soak up the spirit of this beautiful land with a restorative visit to Australia’s most awarded boutique retreat, Gaia Retreat & Spa.

When Olivia Newton John and Greg Cave stumbled across a run-down hinterland retreat in 2005, it was the energy of the land, particularly at the summit – the highest point of Ballina shire, that captured their hearts. Born from a vision and named for a dream, Gaia Retreat & Spa was a passion project from the outset and grew organically and authentically into a barefoot luxury escape with delicious food, deeply nurturing spa treatments and a dizzying array of wellness activities. Olivia may be gone but Gaia’s new custodians, Z1Z, are committed to enhancing the wellness experience for guests; and the essence and spirit of her “piece of paradise” remains unchanged.

Some wellness retreats feel like bootcamp, with rigorous schedules that start with 6am wake up calls, bland food that never fills you up, and no sign of coffee let alone wine. Not so at Gaia, where the ethos is ‘your life, your retreat, your choice.’ Sprawled over 20 acres, deep in Bundjalung country, it’s a place of remarkable beauty. Sun-dappled nature trails lead through lush rainforest and native bushland, sweeping panoramas are enjoyed from thoughtfully positioned daybeds, and pathways are lined with bright pink hibiscus and gloriously scented gardenia. Just being here is deeply restorative, I feel no choice but to slow down, breathe deeply and connect with nature. One morning I climb to the summit and watch, mesmerised, as the rising sun bathes the mist-drenched valleys in soft golden light. It’s a moment of magic and I am not surprised to learn that local elders claim this was traditionally ‘women’s land,’ and the summit a place of healing.

For those that want to go deeper into a wellness journey there’s much on offer –from yoga, fitness and meditation to Qi Gong, sound healing, human design, art therapy, pranayama, and energetic healing. And then there is the highly awarded Day Spa - a heavenly, Bali-inspired haven overlooking the most inviting swimming pool fringed in lush foliage. Rituals and treatments here are profound, harnessing timeless traditions, natural ingredients, and Retreatment Botanicals – the holistic spa/beauty range created by Olivia and

Trudi Jaye. Indulge in a volcanic rock and native wattle seed body polish, a royal kahuna massage, revitalising facial or a crystal journey. As with everything at Gaia, each spa session is personalised to what you need. I am booked for a relaxation massage but my therapist, Aurore announces that my back is locked up (all those desk hours) and treats me to a therapeutic massage instead. I float out, realigned, restored, and so relaxed that I lose track of time and miss the afternoon breath of bliss session, but it’s all about surrender here at Gaia, so I head into the sauna instead, then treat myself to a soothing hot bath in my villa.

While most of Gaia’s 22 retreat-style villas are nestled amidst fragrant tropical gardens, I am lucky enough to stay in Komala Luxe, a gorgeous two-bedroom villa with private saltwater pool, luxurious home-away-from home vibes and views to die for. Cocooned in soft linens and heavenly pillows I sleep deeply, and wake energised, ready for a fascinating foraging walk with Head Organic Gardener Campbell Rowe. We taste honey from the beehives, explore orchards of rosella, cherry guava, and cumquats, and visit organic gardens bursting with salad greens and herbs. The food at Gaia is exceptional – every dish served is creative, beautifully presented and features an exquisite blend of flavours – making the retreat a frequent winner in the World Luxury Restaurant Awards for Health and Wellness Cuisine. There’s a turmeric shot, green juice, quince, ginger, cinnamon porridge, and great coffee for breakfast; a Japanese bowl brimming with tempeh and garden greens for lunch. While my four-course dinner – accompanied by organic wine – includes a fabulous chickpea panisse with cashew cheese and figs, and a divine smoked sheep’s milk yoghurt sorbet with fluffy mixed berry crumble. I also make it to a fun cooking demo and learn to make laksa and the most extraordinary hot chocolate I have ever tasted.

Specialty packages at Gaia include, ‘Mother and Daughter,’ ‘Timeless Beauty,’ and ‘Romantic Love’ – because who says you can’t bring your partner on a retreat? You can also come as a day guest to get a taste of Gaia’s myriad delights. Simply book a 90-minute spa treatment, then stay for lunch and enjoy the sauna, the pool, the nature trails, the healing vibe and those breathtaking views.

CITY VACAY

Adelaide, the city of churches, has a burgeoning food scene and quite possibly the best wine in the country. For most, the month of March, (known as Mad March) is when people head to Adelaide - a month of festivals from Fringe to WOMADelaide.

We opt to visit in July, to experience four seasons in one daythere’s something for everyone. Starting off in the Adelaide Hills we visit the open farm gate LOT.100 in Hay Valley, serving local cider, brewing craft beer and authentic Italian food, set amongst rolling green hills.

Heading into town we take a brisk walk around the beautiful Botanic Gardens and wander around the Adelaide Market, an open air, fresh food splendour. We choose to stay at Hotel Indigo, just around the corner from the markets and bustling China Town, with a cool rooftop bar and Italian eatery.

Adelaide is a town you walk around; built on a grid system, we uncover hidden laneways and street art along the way. Like Peel

Alberta, Alberta, there’s a song in that… next stop over the seas is Canada. To put it into perspective, Canada is the second largest country in the world, so let’s narrow it down to Calgary, Banff, and Lake Louisethe tip of the iceberg.

A direct flight from Brisbane to Vancouver takes approximately 13 hours, with a connection to Calgary. Calgary is a delightful city, full of history, good times and the annual Stampede, where cowboy meets the city.

We wander the snow-lined avenues and uncover plenty of global eats, live music, and funky cafés along the way. We stay on 9th Avenue in the historical railway hotel Fairmont Palliser, a decadent hotel with the juiciest of Alberta steaks and tasty margaritas on offer.

A short two-hour drive and we are in Banff National Park, home to the Rocky Mountains and the most beautiful, frozen lakes we’ve ever seen. We arrive as snow is falling and take the Banff Gondola to the top of

FELICITY LAWLESS & MsELENEOUS DREAM OF LOVE

Bohemian rocker Felicity Lawless, and virtuosic clarinettist, and saxophonist, MsEleneous have joined forces to create a sublime maelstrom of dreamy ballads, full-band reggae, and punchy folk songs that speak to the heart of humanity. Their collaboration, titled ‘Dream of Love’, is a joyful celebration of diversity, and the power of music to bridge cultural divides. The duo’s contagious energy and deep sense of connection to their music resonate with audiences of all ages and backgrounds, whether they’re performing locally or on a global stage.

Felicity Lawless grew up in Brisbane. As a teenager, she discovered the guitar and began exploring the possibilities of blending different styles and genres. “I wanted to create something that was uniquely my own”. At the age of 20 she began touring (frequently around the Northern Rivers festival scene) where she was exposed to a wide range of musical styles. However, it wasn’t until she discovered world music that she found her true calling. “I felt like I could express myself in a way that was universal and transcended language barriers,” she says.

Elena Marcigot, aka MsEleneous, on the other hand, grew up in Italy where she was trained as a classical clarinettist from a very young age. Later moving to Ireland, Portugal, Argentina and finally Australia,

landing in the Northern Rivers seven years ago, she immersed herself in the music of all cultures. After quitting classical music, she developed a love of reggae and other world music, like tango and cumbia.

When Felicity and MsEleneous met in 2018, they knew they had found kindred spirits. Both were passionate about using music as a tool for healing and connection, and both were eager to explore new sounds and styles. Their collaboration began with jam sessions, where they experimented with different rhythms and melodies.

Discovering a shared love of reggae, they began to incorporate reggae rhythms into their songs, blending them with elements of world music and folk. The result was a sound that was both familiar

and new - one that spoke to the heart and had a powerful effect on their audience. People of all ages and backgrounds were drawn to their message and their unique undefined style.

Dream of Love, recorded on the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers at Lovestreet Studios and TK BassDread Studios, is an album that stimulates the senses and elevates the soul. It includes the recently released single ‘Hold Me’ - a showcase of joyful harmonies over fine acoustic guitar and clarinet beds - which is a dreamy ballad about letting go, love and presence in beauty and magic. “This album is universal and joyous, deep and fun, simple and virtuosic. It has been created with so much love and presence and we can’t wait to share it with the world,” explains Felicity.

WORDS BETWEEN FRIENDS

Winter is the season of words in the Northern Rivers with the annual Byron Writers Festival showcasing some of Australia’s most amazing writing talent. It’s the beautiful coming together of those who love to read, with those who write the words that capture our imaginations. So, what are the essential ingredients that make for success as an author? I chat with two of the region’s beloved authors – who happen to be great friends – to find out…

Jessie Cole’s work is imbued with a deep sense of place. Cocooned in her home within the lush Northern Rivers rainforest, her work is sensory, sensual, and familiar to all of us who know this place. Her books - four in total - have been released to critical acclaim, shortlisted, and longlisted for prestigious literary awards. Jessie’s most recent work – Desire, A Reckoning – a visceral narrative, exploring vulnerability and strength, loss, and reclamation, is as much about the mystery of our bodies as the environment we inhabit.

Bronwyn Birdsall also writes from her home on Bundjalung country. She may not have been raised here but she has found herself drawn back to the creative recentering energy of the Northern Rivers time and again. Bronwyn’s debut novel, Time and Tide in Sarajevo (released in 2022) was inspired by her experience living in the war-torn capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the questions that haunted her long after her return home. The result: A gentle, vivid story set in post-war Bosnia. Compelling, intricate, and woven together by an intimate sense of place.

THE ARTS 56

How did you become friends? And how important has been having a connection with your industry peers to your own the process of writing?

J: I first met Bronwyn, briefly, about a decade ago, but more recently (during the pandemic) we crossed paths in an online writers’ workshop. It felt serendipitous to see someone living locally in an international group, and we began to meet up regularly in Brunswick Heads. Writing a book is intensely personal, and I tend to do it alone, but having someone who understands the process can make it feel less lonely.

Both your books show a depth that comes with knowing a subject intimately. Is this an essential ingredient in the book writing process?

J: I’m not sure that you have to know about something in great depth before you start writing. I write to find things out; it’s an explorative process. You have both captured and harnessed the power of your surroundings in your words –how important is that sense of place in anchoring a story?

B: I’m always influenced by the place I’m in, so I can’t imagine writing something set in a generic location or space. I feel like it’s a crucial part of what I’m writing –like another character.

Elizabeth Gilbert talks of the ‘Big Magic’ – a mysterious universal drive and curiosity that inspires creativity. Do you agree with this? Was there a question you were asking in your work?

B: I love this idea. I felt that this story had a life of its own, way out of my control most of the time. The central question of the book is “how do you find your place in a world that feels beyond repair?” and interestingly, I felt like writing the novel answered that question for me. I’ve had messages from readers who felt very seen by the book, and I think that speaks to whatever driving force fuelled me through the process.

J: I have tended towards writing the books I wish I could read. With Desire, I was very curious about how little cultural understanding there seemed to be about how trauma affects the body. I longed to see this explored, and not just in fiction, but in reality. I made myself the subject of this exploration.

Jessie, in your memoir you lay yourself bare. Was your own willingness to be vulnerable an intentional way of writing?

J: It was terrifying and certainly not intentional. I had wanted the book to be something completely different – more detached, more analytical - but whenever

I sat down to write, all that came out were these incredibly intimate scenes. After a while (and some angst) I accepted that this intimate writing was the project. Having said that, I do think a willingness to be vulnerable is necessary in any project that is approached wholeheartedly. Bronwyn, your intimate knowledge, and experience in Sarajevo permeates through your pages. How did the idea for this story come about?

B: The idea for this story came to me by surprise in 2016, about five years after I’d moved back to Australia from Sarajevo. I was just writing in my journal, in a café before work one morning and found myself writing a scene with these two characters – a politician and his English teacher. By the time I was on the bus, I realised I was writing fiction, and from there the story emerged.

What is your process? Do you hunker down in isolation or are ideas something you throw around and give each other feedback on?

J: I try to talk as little as possible about any ideas. For me, ideas need to be gestated and protected. They are fragile! I also don’t usually ask for feedback until I have a full draft.

B: I agree! I prefer not to share anything with anyone until my first draft feels fully formed. I bounced a lot of ideas off Jessie on our walks around Brunswick Heads during the editorial stage though.

As an author, what brings you the most pride/career satisfaction?

J: I think the book, as an object, is very satisfying. Proof that something which was once only internal has become external. It is also a testament to the part of writing that is communal: the publishing process and creating something with a team. And it is always so special to connect with readers. That simple pleasure of someone telling you that the book was meaningful to them.

B: For me, the day the book went to print was enormously satisfying, like I’d solved a puzzle I’d been working on for years. Given this was my first novel, I had no idea what was waiting for me - the wonderful sense of satisfaction I’d get hearing from readers who had connected to the book. Are writers festivals a chance to celebrate each other and give a more in-depth view of your books to your audience, or would you prefer to be out of the limelight just writing the words?

J: Writers’ festivals are so special. As a writer you don’t get much opportunity to cross paths with your readers, so having this experience is heartening. I don’t love the limelight, but I do love knowing a reading and writing community exists!

B: I love writers’ festivals as both a

guest and as an audience member. I’ve absolutely loved meeting readers at events and hearing questions. I see those as a part of being an author, and just enjoy it. But then I go home, I put that away and return to being a writer: back at my desk, writing away.

Be part of Australia’s favourite regional literary event, Byron Writers Festival, taking place at its beautiful new Bangalow home, Bangalow Showground and A&I Hall on Bundjalung country this winter. LUSCIOUS LOCKS WITH LED

The Byron Bay Beauty Brush company believe in a natural, relaxed, and mindful approach to beauty and their range of hair products – a Palm Detangling Massage Brush, which fits in the palm of the hand, is detangling, waterproof, and perfect for scalp massage and hair growth stimulation, the Wooden Brush, made of natural wood which is lightweight, antistatic, and a wonderful allrounder for a root-to-tip brush-out, and the new, cutting edge LED Hair Growth Brush - have all been designed to complement each other and enhance a feeling of wellbeing from the inside out.

As a company looking to expand their range, it was their years of research into beauty trends and effective regimes that caused the Byron Bay Beauty Brush company to come up with the idea of producing a brush that incorporated LED light therapy and massage to stimulate scalp tissue, encourage hair growth and produce luscious, healthy hair.

After seeing remarkable results in the use of LED on the face, the Byron based beauty company began to question whether the same therapy could benefit the hair and scalp in the same way. Using science-based discoveries which show that LED light can penetrate the skin and aid in the natural healing process, stimulate the scalp and boost hair growth and quality, the company began developing an exciting new product – a signature LED beauty brush complete with light therapy and massage functions.

Cord free and rechargeable, the brush comes with its own recharging stand, and is designed for daily use. The light therapy begins to work immediately, and results improve over time - with benefits that include improved circulation in the scalp, stimulation of hair follicles, hair growth and an increase hair count and density, as well as improvement in long-term issues such as easing psoriasis & eczema, becoming noticeable with consistent use. The best part is that LED is completely non-invasive and do not contain UV rays. For best results use both functionsthe massage function first and then the LED function– to stimulate the scalp and hair follicles –before completing your daily routine with either the Palm Brush or Wooden Brush. And if you mention LOCALE Magazine on any purchase, you will receive a free palm detangler brush complimentary.

A

FOR COASTAL LOVERS

Introducing The South Beach Club by Northern NSW designer and photographer Shelley Micke. The bespoke range of handloomed towels, indoor and outdoor cushions, beach chairs and umbrellasoffering everything you need for life by the sea.

Whilst it’s not every day you hear of a wedding photographer launching a lifestyle brand, the multitalented creative director and owner is well experienced in the world of design - holding an Honours Degree in Visual Communication and honing her skills over many years as a designer for one of Australia’s leading surfwear brands, before eventually redirecting her career into a successful local and international photography business - Ivy Road Photography.

Like most creatives, Shelley’s photography work slowed down during the pandemic, and finding herself at home – on Casuarina’s South Beach – a new idea began to form. “It started with me trying to find outdoor cushions that coordinated with my indoor aesthetic. I found the market was flooded with hibiscus and palm tree prints or stripes, yet all I wanted

were simple, clean lines that could go with all styles”.

Drawing inspiration from her home and her travels abroad, particularly the Italian coast, Shelley began to conceive a range of stylish home and lifestyle products, and soon The South Beach Club was born. A thoughtfully curated collection of wares, perfect for those seeking modern designs and simple, clean lines in timeless colourways.

The South Beach Club’s first collection ‘Earth, Sand and Sea’ was officially launched this year - think Amalfi vibes in warm, neutral, and cool colour palette options to suit all aesthetics. Choose from sand free beach towels, luscious hand-loomed Turkish cotton towels, versatile lightweight folding chairs, stylish indoor and outdoor cushions, and umbrellas, to elevate your space at home or for the ultimate day at one of our beautiful local beaches.

With a shoot planned in Italy for

later this year, Shelley hopes to eventually take the range abroad. For now, though, she’s keeping her feet firmly on Casuarina sand, proudly launching the brand locally on our beautiful Northern Rivers coast. After all, a stunning collection, designed by a local, with our lifestyle in mind, couldn’t be a more perfect pairing. thesouthbeachclub.com.
