FEATURE 8 WRITTEN BY: ALISON BONE THE TASTE OF TROPICSTHE

As his passion for fruits grew, Bob sourced the globe for rare and exotic new additions and in 1983 the farm opened its gates as ‘Avocadoland.’ When Bob’s daughter Judy Brinsmead, took over in the early 1990’s it was renamed Tropical Fruit World in homage to what had grown into the largest collection of tropical fruits in the world.

SUSTAINABILITY

THE TASTE OF THE TROPICS Flamboyant, fleshy, and deliciously sweet, tropical fruit transports us into the realms of the exotic – evoking thoughts of palm fringed beaches, steamy jungles and farflung islands. While some varieties, like banana, papaya and watermelon have successfully transitioned into mainstream food culture, many tropical fruits are too fragile to transport and rarely encountered, which makes a trip to Tropical Fruit World such a treat.

FEATURE 9 SPRING 2022

From the sweeping views of the caldera and the coast, to the heady citrus fragrance of fresh pomelo and pineapple and the melodic screech of glossy black cockatoos as they soar across the valley, the Tropical Fruit World experience is a sensory one. Entrance is free to the rainforest-inspired cafe, vibrant produce market, nursery, and cactus gardens. But for a full immersion, sign up for the Plantation Tour (half price for locals,) which starts with a tasting session brimming with juicy fresh fruit and fascinating facts. Located high on the rim of the largest extinct volcano in the Southern Hemisphere, Tropical Fruit World is blessed with panoramic views and rich red volcanic soils that host more than 500 varieties of tropical fruit. Offering fascinating plantation tours, fun tasting sessions and fabulous produce, a day at the farm is a feast for the senses.

Biological sustainable horticulture is practiced here, which essentially preserves the integrity of the land by using natural farming methods, including integrated pest management to protect crops. Biodiversity is key, with more than 85 species of birds and an abundance of wildlife living alongside the commercial production. Well established wildlife corridors allowing native animals to move freely across multiple habitat zones, which helps control erosion and stops degradation of farming and forested land. Solar power is used across the property and the farm partners with Tweed Shire Council to use composted green waste as mulch and fertiliser.

Forget any notions you may have of Tropical Fruit World as a theme park, this family-owned heritage business is a celebration of nature. “More than a tourist attraction, more than a commercial farm, this is a botanical garden of irreplaceable value,” says Tropical Fruit World founder Bob Brinsmead. The story begins back in 1972, when Bob and his wife Valorie bought a 200-acre, run-down crop farm. Together with their young children they planted orchards of bananas, mangoes, lychees, papaya, macadamia, and avocado. Ever mindful of preserving the integrity of the land, the fruit trees flourished amidst swathes of rainforest.

Depending on the season you may discover the divinely creamy texture of custard apple, the wonderful black sapote or chocolate pudding fruit, which really does taste like chocolate pudding, and the little red miracle berry which makes everything, even bitter, sour things taste sweet. And did you know that pineapple is the only edible bromeliad? Or that chewing gum was originally made from the thick juice of the Mexican sapodilla tree aka, the chewing gum tree? Armed with fresh insights and piqued interest into the weird, wonderful, and sometimes wacky world of tropical fruit, step aboard the tractor train to explore the plantation, starting with 3000 surprisingly large avocado trees.

Winding down the steep slopes you will see moringa – the tree of life, Mexican casimiroa (its leaves were used by the Aztecs to promote sleep), Brazilian cherry trees, all manner of guava, lychees and mangoes, and enormous jackfruit which can weigh up to 40kg. Neat rows of climbing cactus brim with luscious pink dragon fruit, coffee trees sport vivacious red coffee berries, while the bush tucker garden features Davidson’s plum, lemon myrtle and macadamias. A pitstop deep in the banana plantation allows you to pluck Blue Java bananas fresh off the vine and crack open Australia’s only native nut, the macadamia. Reaching the valley floor there is a small fauna park which is a huge hit with kids thanks to the friendly family of small Eastern grey kangaroos, a trio of neck-rub loving Ethiopian dwarf goats and some lively sheep. The tour also includes a wildlife boat cruise at the head of Cudgen Creek, where you can spot ducks, geese, and water dragons as you travel along the water way fringed in soaring palm trees, bamboo and ornamental ginger.

FEATURE 10

Wind up the tour with a coffee or meal in Plantation Cafe and browse the great selection of in-house products which include the Tropical Passion food range and Tropicology – a luxe range of organic skin care that harnesses the nutrients of avocados. The farm also hosts the weekly Duranbah Farmer’s Market, and if you are looking for a scenic picnic spot, it’s hard to beat the shady gardens with views straight out to Wollumbin.

Jason integrates his own storytelling into his artworks, which are inspired by nature and through personal life events and experiences. It is the appreciation of the storytelling, and his passion for Aboriginal and Islander culture, that Jason hopes will resonate with those viewing his artworks.

SPOTLIGHT 19 SPRING 2022

Notably Jason’s work was exhibited at the Murwillumbah Arts Trail with a body of work specifically curated for NAIDOC week on display at the dreamy Belle River House in Tumbulgum. Along with an aweinspiring art mural at the Murwillumbah Public Hospital. Jason is a passionate creative, who shares his knowledge of first nations people of the Bundjalung Nation through his unique artworks. A talented storyteller and educator he is a wonderful asset to the region and beyond. AN ARTIST AT ONE WITH COUNTRY

This beautiful connection is evident in Jason’s work. Inspired by the ochre artists in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, the artist respectfully gathers, blends and paints with the rich collection of colours found in natural ochres unearthed across the Bundjalung land around Byron, Springbrook, Mount Tamborine, and Cudgen, paying respect to the spiritual connection of Indigenous art, body painting, ceremonies, dance, languages, stories, and songs of the various clan groups within the Bundjalung nation.

For Jason King, local Aboriginal artist, who was born, raised, and has lived on Bundjalung Country in the Tweed Valley his whole life, a deep connection to his ancestral land is innate. Coming from a large culturally diverse family - fourth generation Aboriginal and third generation South Sea Islander on his mother’s side - and being a proud descendant of Bundjalung (Tweed Valley) and Gumbaynggirr (Coffs Coast) peoples, Jason has always been inspired by the original storytellers of Australia.

JASON KING

Jason has original artworks in and around Tropical Fruit World and is integral to the Naidoc celebrations each year, he connects people to place through his knowledge of his culture and the sacred land that he grew up on.

As well as his works on canvas, Jason’s stunning public art murals grace the walls of local schools including St Joseph’s Primary school in Banora and Lennox Primary, ‘Community Spirit’ at South Tweed Primary, and ‘Ceremony’- the

Jason has been the Indigenous tour guide at Tropical Fruit World for the past 20 years and is a dedicated nature lover and valued member of their team. His infectious smile and welcoming spirit guides visitors around the farm, whilst he educates and offers tastings of the exotic fruits grown on the lush valley property.

“It is how connection to country is developed,” he explains, “through the learning and sharing of language and culture. In culture, we speak to the land, and the land speaks back to us. We have a relationship with the land.”

My house - I have a nice little creek down the bottom. No one can find me down there!

You are Byron Bay based now, originally from Melbourne, how long have you been here and what was it that drew you to the area? I’ve been here for seventeen years. I grew up in country Victoria, then moved to Melbourne at fifteen and started playing at pubs. I was burnt out by time I was twenty - I had one kid at the time, a second on the way and I was living the rock ‘n’ roll Iife.

You have a new album coming later this year, what can we expect to hear? Is this solo or with the band?

Favourite beach to visit? Broken Head Place to grab a coffee? Barrio in Habitat Industrial Estate Any secret locations to unwind?

I have always been really affected by music - it was musical theatre that first grew my love of music. My oldest brother was obsessed with it, and we would have these stacks of cd’s and I’d just get lost in the stories. I loved the way time stopped when I was listening.

Ok, tell us more about MT Warning, how did you come to take on that name?

SPOTLIGHT 20

We wanted to get away and to live somewhere beautiful where we could be poor young parents and the kids wouldn’t notice - that’s old Byron for you. We couldn’t afford holidays so we thought we might as well move to a Lookholiday destination.wherewelive, coming home to Byron is the greatest feeling. It’s an amazing place, as is the whole of the Northern Rivers. What made you get into music and want a career in the industry?

I am currently writing a musical theatre piece with some of the people from Rent, that will come out in October this year. It is called “New Blood” and will be performed at The Newrybar Hall. Keeping it local. This is what the show will be all about, a local story and how the town is changing.

I know Mt Warning is very prevalent in our community! It all came about from my original collaborator, Taylor Steal, who is a surf filmmaker. We’d sit out in the surf and look up at Wollumbin and have conversations about the music we wanted to make. We wanted something iconic, I’m Mikey, he is Taylor. So, we took the ‘M’ and the ‘T’ and added Warning. It is actually pronounced M. T. Warning, but yeah, it looks suspiciously like Mount Warning. Our publisher Karen recently caught up with one of our most talented locals, Mikey Bryant - aka, MT Warning. Chatting about living in the Northern Rivers, musical theatre and getting back into music after a long hiatus from the industry… and of course, finding out what’s behind the name.

HEY, BRYANTMIKEYHI,

Living like a local in Byron Bay, can you let us in on some of your faves?

Shoutout to your restaurant?favourite Doma café in Federal Where to a grab drink? Eltham Hotel

Last year the Bangalow Theatre Company started the production of Rent and asked if I would send a video in for the role, as they were looking for a rock ‘n’ roll singer to play ‘Roger’. I knew straight away I had to take the part – my life is based on this guy! I still said no at first though – it felt too scary, too confronting. They were very persuasive, so I did it, and it was the most fun I’ve had in years!

Are theatre productions something we will see more from you in the future?

I have a friend Sally; we haven’t seen each other in 10 years and hadn’t spoken in a long time. She was in lockdown in London, so through covid we just started sending voice messages to each other. These were 10-20 minute-long voice messages. Sally is a visual artist, so we would just talk about the muse and where it comes from and how much we admire each other’s work. When it came to writing songs again these messages really inspired me. Sally has been instrumental in the record and my support.

Yes, there are fifteen new songs that were written and recorded in three weeks. I’d get up in the morning, and just sit and write a song. I also built a studio at home, so every instrument you hear is played by me. I would write, then play through it a couple times on acoustic guitar, then record it. Then did the same with the piano. I also did this process playing the drums, the bass, and the cello - which I taught myself last year. I was a five-piece band all on my own! I do have a six-piece band when I play live, which includes my 15-year-old daughter who sings and plays violin.

Right now, I’m back into performing. Music has always been my driving force, my passion, but I just needed to step away for a while. I took a few years off to recalibrate. I’ve literally just played my first shows back and it’s beautiful. I was sent your brand-new track “Hey Hi” to listen to. I really loved the sound; it is upbeat and cruisey and just makes you feel good listening to it. Can you tell me a little about the track, what is the story behind it and who is Sally?

How are you, and what is happening in the world of Mikey Bryant?

I recently discovered that you also performed in the Bangalow theatre production of Rent as ‘Roger’! How did this come about?

If you’ve still got energy at the end of the day, there is an easy (according to Ed) 9km return coastal walk behind the dunes to South Golden Beach that starts on the old coast road at Wooyung. A flat, singletrack walk with spectacular views south to Byron headland and a chance to discover nesting seabirds along a remote stretch of pristine sand. Refuel at Mrs Birdy’s, the magical local corner store at South Golden Beach before the return walk and a wellearned rest.

Grab a recovery coffee and breaky at one of Byron’s many brilliant cafés, then head 45 minutes north to the Fingal Lighthouse Track just south of Tweed Heads. One of the shortest walks in the region at just over 1km, it’s also one of the most rewarding. From the carpark head along one of the small paths crisscrossing the coastal forest to the lighthouse where rich history lessons and views to Cook Island - the aquatic reserve famous for its colony of sea turtles - awaits. Just below are amazing coastal basalt ‘giants causeway’ rock formations, the result of cooling lava flows from 23 million years ago. A wonderful place to explore or have a cooling post-walk swim at the aptly named Dreamtime Beach.

A fabulous and yes, famous place to start, we begin our coastal exploration with the simply breathtaking sunrise walk on the Byron Bay Lighthouse Walk. Kick off from the stunning Wategos beach and ascend the many steps to the glorious lighthouse atop the headland. There’s nothing quite so magical on a sunny spring day as exploring the area in search of some luscious greenery to fill our homes and boost our moods after a long cold winter. And here in the Northern Rivers we are spoilt for choice with some of the most unique and beautiful nurseries this region has to offer. Just make sure to have an empty boot and your pockets full as you come along with me for an enchanted weekend journey to discover the best - from Cudgen to Byron, with the sweetest pit stops in between.

ENCHANTEDWEEKENDJOURNEYS

A true fave to visit. Set amongst the stunning vista of Mount Warning to the west and palm-lined fields leading the eye across to the southern beaches, the famous red volcanic soil underfoot will grow anything I’m told. It’s here I’ve poked around with the indoor plants and bothered the poor gardeners with more than my fair share of questions (sorry Tania). What soil? What light? What sized pot? It’s all a delicate balance but they are truly happy to indulge my, ahem, clear ineptitude. “Our aim is to provide all customers with a happy face and happy plants, so please feel free to ask any of us about your garden, or any tips you need,” says Tania, as she scoots me off in the golf buggy to view a luscious patch of fiddle leafed figs. Phew! And, as if to reinforce their happy face policy, Sally the resident golden retriever holds up her paw for a shake. “Yes Sally, I’ll be back soon, there are some pretty pots I have my eye on.”

BACKYARD PLANT CO. Further down the highway a detour to Sunrise near the exit to Byron, sees me at the private home and shop front for the Backyard Plant Co. Oh.my.goodness! I’ve long been intrigued by cactus but as someone who is notorious for killing succulents, I’m not sure if I’ve got the chops for a majestic prickly armed Cowboy. I circle them all. The Golden Barrels, the sublime Mexican Fence Posts, but it’s most definitely the cowboy calling my name. The gorgeous Este and partner Olly know their stuff and generously take this newby for a wander through their stunning garden oasis. I could live here in this Mexican paradise and just marvel at their expertise, but they’ve convinced me I’m up for the adoption and we manoeuvre ‘Wayne’ in between the front and back seats of my car. His top spines not far off grazing the car roof. I’m chuffed and head onwards on my journey to find the perfect partner for Wayne. And this I do, just down the road in Eden.

And then from the corner of my eye I see her, a buxom prickly pear, the perfect partner for Wayne I’ll affectionately (and perhaps obviously) name Dolly. With a full boot and empty pockets, I return home happy and content. Eden at Byron | Byron Bay edenatbyron.com.au

ENCHANTED WOOD NURSERY Ok here’s where things get serious and I’m clearing space in my car boot. Tucked away in the tranquil surrounds of Ocean Shores, is the Enchanted Wood Nursery. Just like its name, this nursery takes you on a magical journey through its array of beautiful and unique plants. A family owned and run business that stocks a huge range of natives, ornamentals, water plants, indoor plants, and fruit trees - in short, everything you need to create your own enchanted paradise. This nursery sources local products with an eye for the most lush and unusual plants – it’s the metre long, fleshy-leafed, hanging plant - which looks like the Jurassic Park version of a bird’s nest fern - that captures my eye (an Epiphyllum Oxypetalum, for the more learned amongst us). A word of warning though, time stands still, and hours are sucked away in this lustful wonderland which mesmerises avid gardeners just as much as those whose thumbs are not so green.

@thebackyardplantco / by appointment only EDEN AT BYRON

BURRINGBAR RAINFOREST NURSERY Just a little way down the coast in Burringbar, is an Australian native plant specialist, home to one of the largest ranges of native nursery plants available in Australia – particularly to species found in Southeast Queensland and Northern NSW. Here, plants are displayed with their common and Latin names as well as informative species descriptions for all the plant nerds and native purists amongst us. There is also an acre of botanical gardens to stroll through where you can see the plants in a garden-type setting and imagine them in situ. With an already extensive plant list, the nursery has extended its range to include a wide variety of fruit trees, vines, and berries. But coolest of all, in my inexperienced opinion, are the Australian Bush Tucker plants – Davidson’s Plum, Aniseed Myrtle, Black Apple and Lemon Myrtle – that have me dreaming of luscious meals and outdoor living.

The perfect place to end our adventure, aptly named Eden is all that - a tropical paradise. With lush greenery and a huge array of plants, ornaments, pretty pots, and friendly faces I’m confident I’ll find one more plant baby to take home with me. With over 100 years of gardening experience between them, the qualified team at Eden are ready for the questions of ‘green’ gardeners like me. Happy to chat and amply experienced, they can assist in plant identification, pest and disease treatment, and even planting suggestions and garden design concepts. Super tempting also is the home service for those who prefer watering and chatting to their plant families over installing them in the actual ground.

As we woke on Saturday in a haze of WTF just happened, the rain stopped and darkness turned to light as buses began to pick up die-hard revellers. There was mud, mud, and more mud but nothing was going to stop the energy rising to bring back this year’s Splendour in the Grass.

A showcase of Indigenous artists like Baker Boy and popular local lads Budjerah and JK47 completed the impressive program. The stage was set and with an increased 50,000 strong crowd, the organisers hoped to recoup some losses and re-employ a community along the way.

As the creative industries slowly but surely woke from an imposed hiatus, and the fatigue of a global pandemic began to fade away - live music made its comeback one festival at a time.

relocated to local pubs and venues up and down the coast. The kids were happy, live music and good times is what they came for as Bernard Fanning joined Baker Boy on stage at the Beach Hotel. Down the road at Kingscliff Beach Hotel Yungblud performed a ‘Stuck in the Mud’ concert to great applaud.

Saturday highlights included an electrifying set by Jungle Giants, Glass Animals and the Strokes. Yes, there was an enormous bus debacle, with hundreds of festival goers not getting home until the sun came up, but for those of us who have live music and festivals running through our souls, the overall response was one of joy, as all the creatives and free thinkers rose in support and connection and danced until the world seemed right once again. The sun shone down on the final day as lakes of mud turned to swamps of clay and, with a dry amphitheatre, the festival was back and the energy high.

Hats off to all who endured the mud, the relocations and cancellations, and while there will be learnings, the organisers should feel proud and resilient as they got knocked out and got back up again.

A community fundraising effort has brought Fletcher Street Cottage, Byron Bay, back to life as a hub for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness, providing breakfasts, hot showers, and support services in a safe and welcoming space.

Describing Fletcher Street Cottage as a “First port of call, offering basic, simple needs from nourishing breakfasts to showers and laundry, in a welcoming and respectful environment,” Jenny explains direct support is also available. This includes provision of information, referrals, advocacy, and appointments with community workers, all of which can help combat the stress and mental health impacts of homelessness. Office support includes phones, charging, printing and mail collection, and the peaceful garden is a place to relax, have a coffee and make connections that help counter the isolation that comes with homelessness. While access to basic needs is crucial, homelessness has greater complexities than many people realise. “If you’re sleeping in the dunes or a car, having a shower or being able to wash your clothes and have a healthy breakfast can make a huge difference,” says Katie. But more than that, “Fletcher Street Cottage provides a safe space, and the opportunity to feel like you are supported, that you are a part of the community and the community cares about you.” The cottage is entirely self-funded and relies on community support to keep going. As Katie points out, “A sign of a strong community is in the way we maintain a sense of connection and support our most vulnerable.” So, if you are keen to help, donations can be made directly through the website at fletcherstreetcottage.com.au. Anyone interested in volunteering can fill in the volunteer form online. Collaborations are also welcome, so if you have a skill to share get in touch.

“A SIGN OF A STRONG COMMUNITY IS IN THE WAY WE MAINTAIN A SENSE OF CONNECTION AND SUPPORT OUR MOST VULNERABLE.”

While Byron Shire is best known for its beautiful beaches and scenic hinterland, it also has the highest population of people sleeping rough in NSW outside of Sydney. An escalating housing crisis, the impact of COVID, and the effect of Airbnbs on limited rentals had already left many unable to secure housing. Then the floods happened and the housing crisis turned into a housing catastrophe.

“Now, we not only have those who have been sleeping rough for a long time or impacted by housing prices, we also have flood-affected people, and we’re just getting completely inundated by people

After months of hard work, Fletcher Street Cottage was scheduled to reopen on 30 March 2022 – the day of the Byron floods. “Water lapped at the front door but thankfully didn’t make it inside,” says Katie Love, Communications Manager.

Jennyseeking help.”adds,“What people forget, is that those who were already sleeping rough have been affected by the floods too - they may have lost all of their camp stuff, their identification, and just basic sort of things - but they haven’t been eligible for some of the wider flood relief supports because they didn’t lose a house.”

After being closed for six years due to lack of funding, Fletcher Street Cottage reopened its doors as a service hub for the homeless in April, following an impressive fund-raising campaign in 2021. Providing a heartening community response to a critical issue, the campaign – spearheaded by Byron Community Centre and Creative Capital, raised over $400,000 for the renovation and rebuild of the cottage. Local architects, designers and landscapers contributed their services, while businesses donated furniture, kitchen supplies and washing machines. Jenny Ryan, Fletcher Street Cottage’s Homelessness Projects Manager admits to being astonished by the generosity of the local community, “I have been working in human services for thirty years and have never seen a model where even the wages have been paid by donors.”

The coffee is great too, but why not try the Hazy Hemp Hot Cacao with hemp protein, hazelnut paste, Indian ginseng and coconut sugar? Eating with little ones? Take a seat under the fairy lights on the tropical terrace, settle into the stylish banquette seating inside or perch at the bar to watch all the action. On the menu? Fun, flavourful dishes designed to be shared, with a focus on the freshest local ingredients. The restaurant is perhaps best known for its plantbased meat substitutes in dishes like Crispy Chick’n with yuzu caramel and chili miso aioli which tastes just like – you guessed it – chicken. You will also find Fysh Tacos made with tasty tempurastyle banana blossoms, a hearty, herb crumbed Tempe Parmigiana too, smothered in a rich Napoli sauce and vegan mozzarella, served with a crispy fresh Brussels slaw of fennel and cabbage with fragrant lemon myrtle dressing. Finish off with a fluffy, light Chocolate Mousse Cake, or do the liquid dessert thing with a Salted Coconut Espresso Martini. Speaking of cocktails, local spirits are the star here and blended into creative concoctions like the Bush Sherbet featuring Brookies Mac, the herbaceous Floral Fairy, and a Coconut Kaffir Margy. Beers are local too, while wine is natural, and a generous happy hour runs from 5 – 6 daily. A new venue will be opening in Ocean Shores soon, so watch this space! At close to being a three trillion-dollar industry, there is no doubt that global fashion is critical to the world’s economy.

The choice not to wholesale and sell exclusively online via their website or local warehouse boutique, also means less waste and more control over their ecofootprint.

It may seem a David and Goliath battle but if we’ve learnt anything from stories of old, it’s that a single person holds the greatest power to create change. So, what does conscious consumerism look like, and how can the practice of sustainability and slow fashion have a global impact?

We’ve spoken to some key local designers who’ve taken a stance in the war against fast fashion and are urging us to join the revolution.

“It is an honour to see our team work together in an empowering environment that supports their livelihoods and families. Supporting slow fashion contributes to a greater future in so many ways and encourages a ripple effect of love for generations to come.”

But when our love of fashion comes at the cost of the planet we live on, and at the expense of the worker who made our clothes, it’s time to review our perspective.

There’s no doubt that Australians love fashion. In fact, each year we purchase an average of 27kgs of new clothing per person and discard an average of 23kgs of clothing into landfill, making us one of the highest consumers of fashion and greatest contributors of textile waste in the world.

“It has become our moral duty to live a life in which we can save our traditions, produce quality products that last longer, waste less, and create livelihoods based on a fair living wage,” summarises Kopal of her ethos. “We have chosen and will continue to choose people and the planet over profits. That’s the bottom line.” kopalshop.com / @kopalshop

Clothing is the no. 3 polluter on planet earth, labels must take responsibility and begin to have a social conscience.”

Kopal’s move to expand her own label in Byron Bay came in 2013.

From the Kopal brand you will find a considered approach to clothing with small batches of unique, long-lasting, comfortable designs created with quality fabrics and natural dyes by a small team of artisans in India, where meaningful employment is created, and antique traditions are preserved. Creating in a manner that is conscious of both the environment and the people who make the garments, is the heart of sustainability for this brand and their highest priority.

“I wanted to be around artists and designers who were earthy, grounded and producing less” she said, adding, “It’s not enough to use the words ‘sustainable’ and ‘ethical’ as a marketing technique.

KopalKopal

KOPAL Passionate advocate for sustainability in fashion, Creative Director Kopal was born and raised in India, before finding herself in New York where she studied and spent 25 years working for some of the most impressive names in fashion. However, the designer was forced to re-examine the industry she loved after witnessing some of the biggest labels pushing down the prices of garments whilst on buying trips to her home country.

Formed in 2017 and based in a 100% solar-powered, off-grid studio in rural Northern NSW, fashion label Genkstasy is a fiercely inclusive multi-gendered brand with sustainability at its core. “My parents were social activists who were careful about waste, and I was home-schooled and raised in a conscious way,” says founder Evie Willsteed. “My mother was an Indigenous rights activist, so caring for country was part of my being from an early age.”

6. Don’t just believe a swing tag –natural fibres don’t necessarily equal sustainable (did you know it takes 2,700 litres of water to grow enough cotton to make one t-shirt!)

2. Commit to buying less and invest in clothing that lasts 3. Wear vintage or thrift – or purchase only items you know to be sustainable

ECHORA

“People can no longer deny or be ignorant of their responsibility to the earth,” says Donna. “We all have the ability to create change.” echora.com.au | @echora.life

Stepping into Echora – Murwillumbah’s newest sustainable fashion hub – is akin to having a spiritual experience. And it’s more than the luxe design, earthy tones and raw fittings and textures. Perhaps it is the welcoming calm of owner Donna, who pours cups of herbal tea and settles in to chat with every person who steps inside. “That feeling you get,” says Donna, “was created intentionally. Sustainability is all about connection. Connection to the earth, connection to people. I invest my time in developing a relationship with each of my suppliers, ensuring we are like-minded and sharing of one sustainable vision. I spend time listening to each of my customers. This is a space that’s all about slowing down and appreciating the beauty of the moment.”

Looking at country and culture from a different lens may have been their second nature but Evie, who had studied fashion, realised they couldn’t be part of the industry as it was. “I was used to living in a more connected way. Capitalism and having more things for the sake of having more things isn’t my motivation so I knew I had to find a different approach for my label. Sustainability requires an element of self-awareness. Asking yourself why you’re wanting to buy something. It’s about honesty on every level including what’s motivating your choices as a consumer. As a creator I aim to be transparent in all aspects of my business. I create with intention, knowing where each piece of fabric came from and knowing where each piece will end up after its life cycle.”

SMALL STEPS TO BECOMING A MORE SUSTAINABLE CONSUMER:

5. Ask questions – understand the social and ethical impact of the brands you’re purchasing from

4. Be curious – look at where, how and by whom your clothes are made

So passionate is Donna about sustainable and ethical practice that you will not find a single product in her store that has not been made naturally and in a way that benefits the earth and the people who make them. “Even our sunglasses are made from recycled sunglasses” she says. “All of our products are carefully selected, and all were designed and manufactured as locally as possible, with the utmost respect for the natural environment.”

As for its forward approach to non-binary fashion, “I see being non-gendered as an intrinsic part of the sustainable movement,” says Evie “because it provides a wider element of connectedness to each other that is unrestricted by societal boxes. Genkstasy is our aspiration for what the future can be, as we build each other up, and use our shared knowledges to create the world we want to live in. With more joy, more equality, and more connectivity to the earth, to ourselves, and to one another.” genkstasy.com |

THAT DOESN’T COST THE EARTH Beauty

When Anita Bauer and Marley Hammond opened Craft Hair and Beauty – a coastal boutique salon in Pottsville – they committed to sourcing ethical, low impact and sustainable products to create a low toxic environment for themselves and their clients. Taking their eco-conscious creed to the next level, they have now joined Sustainable Salons - a resource recovery service tailored to the hair and beauty business, which diverts 95% of resources from landfill. How? All aluminium is recycled into foil, ponytails are donated for medical wigs, plastics are recycled into outdoor furniture, sunglasses and combs, while hair clippings are used in oil spill boons. And all proceeds from recycled goods go to Oz Harvest and Kiwi Harvest to provide meals for disadvantaged families, so it’s a win-win.

We all love the look of freshly varnished nails, but did you know that traditional-style nail polish is loaded with chemicals, including what is known as the “toxic trio” - dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene and formaldehyde? Providing an eco-friendly alternative, Danielle Egan launched Sienna at the Byron Bay Community markets in 2013, and now supplies 20 countries around the globe. Her latest formula – made with raw ingredients like sugar cane, cassava, cotton, and corn – is the first microplastic free, aluminium free and nano-particle free nail polish in the world. Signature timber caps are made from non-native weed wood and all packaging is 100% recyclable. You can forget the acetone too, as Sienna nail polish remover is soy-based. The Sienna range comes in an array of on trend colours inspired by nature and applies beautifully. Drop by the showroom in Byron Bay or order online. Sienna | Byron Bay | sienna.co

SHOP 46 CREATING Paradise Willow and Jason Bolt - Image credit: Sal Singh Photography @salsingphotography AT HOME

“I wanted a home that reflected the glorious, relaxed feeling of being on holidays,” said Willow. Adding, “We’d already been looking for opportunities to open a second store in town and we realised we wanted to share all the amazing furniture we’d found for our own home, with others.”

Handmade indeed, apart from their iconic terrazzo stone baths, every piece of furniture sourced is one off and original. This includes a stunning range of teak dining tables made from reclaimed timbers to mind-blowing basins hand-crafted out of stone and petrified wood. Paradise Living Co. has also become the largest supplier of rattan products in NSW, all of which are sourced and created from sustainably managed forests in Indonesia.

“We also salvage original doors from old buildings or houses set for demolition in India,” says Willow. “Many of the shops now want roller doors to prevent crime, so they have no purpose for these amazing pieces. Giving these historical and beautiful designs a new lease on life brings so much joy.”

followed, with an introduction to their Javanese buying agent and local translator, as well as the green light to purchase the magnificent Prospero Street emporium – a grand 120-year-old building with 15-foot ceilings, which began its life as an iron monger and was destined for restoration under Willow and Jason’s care.

For Willow and Jason, working sustainably means that everyone benefits - the skilled artisans and designers of their products are cared for and paid accordingly, jobs and education opportunities are created, and their loyal customers can purchase products that are unique, beautiful, and not harming the earth in their production. “We can all play a part in doing good in the world,” smiles Willow. “That’s how it should be.”

Ain 2017.littlesynchronicity

For Paradise Living Co. founders Willow and Jason Bolt (who were already valued members of the Murwillumbah community and owners of Chozen Surf on the main street since 2007), it was the combination of a trip to Bali around the same time as renovating their family home, that made them both discover how much they loved the process of designing homes.

“I guess what started as an opportunity to help our own family create a second income, opened our eyes to how we could help others and better the planet in the process,” muses Willow, whose deep love of the island and its people is evident and firmly at the heart of the Paradise Living Co. ethos. “Beyond just sourcing furniture for our store in Australia, we wanted to support these amazing small family businesses through employment and education,” she said. “We’ve had the opportunity to expand to bigger factories with cheaper labour, but we want to remain loyal to our suppliers and makers, because this is their livelihoods. It also ensures our furniture is not mass-produced but retains its unique, raw, hand-made quality.”

Bali had always been a beloved holiday destination for the couple, and before long, the sweet spot between tropical vacations and their love of design, resulted in the birth of Paradise Living Co.

Leather Goods

As a Pottsville resident and boutique agency owner, I value honesty and open communication with buyers and sellers, and I feel honoured to play a role in connecting people to our slice of paradise.

With that in mind, property presentation is crucial. You only get one chance at a first impression, so it needs to count. Following an appraisal, vendors should complete repairs, declutter each space and reduce personal items to a minimum. Beyond that, consider professional property styling. A well-staged property will give buyers a sense of how their life might look and feel in your home and our unrivalled seaside community.

We talk to Nicole Abbott from Coastal Abode Properties, our go-to local real estate expert and property styling maven, about her exciting boutique service and the stabilising of current market trends.

Riding the wave of the biggest real estate boom in 50 years, the Northern Rivers property market saw unprecedented growth last year.

Of course, finding the right real estate agent can affect the outcome and sale price. In these transitional times, it’s vital to partner with a market-savvy local agent who can provide sound advice, set realistic expectations and guide you through the process of showcasing your home in the best light.

REAL ESTATE 50

Despite falling house prices, further interest rate rises and consumer uncertainty, we expect the Northern Rivers region to remain resilient through this unseasonal market correction. Our coastal location and coveted lifestyle will continue to drive demand, and we’re unlikely to feel the full effects of the downturn compared to big cities like Melbourne and Sydney.

In-house styling services, like Coastal Abode’s Style & Stage, will boost your listing appeal by incorporating rooms and elements on must-have buyer lists—like a second living space, study nook or outdoor entertaining area. Helping buyers visualise where they’ll relax, play, sleep and enjoy time with loved ones removes obstacles and objections to buying.

THE TIDE SHIFTEDHAS

Last Spring, limited local listings forced buyers to act quickly, stretch their budget, and enter bidding wars. This year things will look different. With more stock on the market, buyers tend to take it slow, weigh up their options and scrutinise every listing.

As expected, the tide has shifted, and the market has settled back to a more familiar rhythm. While the pace of buying and selling has slowed across the country, regional New South Wales experienced an average sales growth of 51.7% from March 2020 into early 2022. House prices have trended downward in recent months but analysts are hopeful this will plateau around twenty percent.

As we head into the Spring selling season, new properties will hit the market, and competition will inevitably heat up. Locals will buy and sell, investors will keep watch, and families will continue to relocate North, hoping to settle before the start of the 2023 school year.

ESCAPE 52

Enticing 3-night Relax and Retreat wellness packages are on offer, but you can also create your own retreat experience, starting with a pampering treatment at Eléme Spa to steer you straight into relax mode. Try the deeply soothing Autograph of Eléme massage which includes a heavenly scalp massage, or opt for a Muscle Melt, Chakra Healing or an indulgent facial. All treatments include use of the steam room and spa lounge but if a traditional sauna is more your style, there is one right by the pool. You can also start your day with a complimentary yoga session and follow up with a chia nourish bowl or green smoothie at Veranda, then take a contemplative wander through the forest on the meditation trail. But if your idea of wellness is more about lounging by a gorgeous swimming pool with a book or a cocktail (or both) in hand, stylish sun loungers and poolside cabanas await.

The moment you step foot in Crystalbrook Byron, (formerly Byron at Byron) and catch your first glimpse of lush forest, a feeling of calm washes over you. It is said that green is soothing for the soul, and with a laidback approach to luxury and 45 acres of subtropical rainforest to immerse yourself in, the resort provides idyllic conditions to turn off, tune in and chill out.

It’s all about the rainforest here – whether gazing up at the canopy from the 25-metre infinity pool, admiring the views from the aptly-named ‘Forest’ restaurant, or hiding away in your luxury suite nestled amidst the trees. Set deep within the forest, the resort’s 92 one- and two-bedroom suites are arranged in clusters with names like Everglades, Acacia, Bangalow, and Rivergum. Each spacious suite deliciously peaceful and remarkably private - more like a beautifully appointed coastal apartment than hotel roomwith separate bedroom, lounge, kitchenette, expansive bathroom, covered veranda, and gorgeous views in every direction. Dedicated to responsible luxury, Crystalbrook favours environmentally friendly, upcycled, recycled, and locally sourced materials wherever possible. It’s also the first hospitality group in Australia to have 100% waste-free bathroom amenities, which includes the divinely scented rosella body wash, exotic bath brews and even a toothbrush and comb made from sugarcane and corn starch. The resort is also plastic bottle free; the coffee pods are zero waste and the wooden room cards are recycled. And forget the bulky guest folder - everything you need to know is conveniently loaded onto your in-room iPad. A series of boardwalks crisscross the resort, winding through lush groves of Bangalow palms, dense paperbark forest, coastal cypress pines and lotus gardens. 90 varieties of bird make their home here, including brightly hued kingfishers and whip birds - you will hear their distinctive whip-crack call. Swamp wallabies live here too and if you’re lucky you will catch sight of a koala in the paperbark trees. Follow the trail to the beach to see giant strangler figs, blue lilly pillys, king ferns and some mighty staghorns, before emerging high on the dunes of Tallow Beach. Turn right for Broken Head and a refreshing swim in the tea tree lakes or left for Cape Byron and the lighthouse. But don’t be surprised if you find yourself turning back the way you came - Crystalbrook Byron is a hard place to leave.

ESCAPE 53 SPRING 2022

With spotlights illuminating the canopy, the rainforest is particularly entrancing in the evenings, and Veranda - with its wicker sofas, chill out soundtrack and views over the shimmering sapphire blue pool - is an idyllic setting for a predinner cocktail. Try a signature Paradiso made with Byron’s own Brookie’s dry gin, fresh lemon, lemon myrtle syrup, mint, and passionfruit. Veranda also serves up tasty bites during the day, but for dinner make your way over to Forest for an inspired menu described as ‘passionately local’, with 80% of fresh ingredients sourced within a three-hour radius of the resort. Protein is freerange while seafood is sustainably sourced, take the Market-fresh fish or Hiramasa kingfish ceviche served with Davidson’s plum, ruby grapefruit, and pandanus pickled karkalla. The Basque cheesecake is another must try - the accompanying honey ice cream is house made and comes direct from the resort’s four thriving honeybee colonies. 5-star resorts are by their nature places to switch off from it all, and when you add a large swathe of pristine wilderness to the equation, the relaxation experience is next level. The good news is that Eléme Spa and both restaurants are open to non-guests, so you don’t need to be staying here to get a taste of Crystalbrook Byron magic. Crystalbrook. Forest Bathing

ESCAPE 54

A popular wellness trend in Japan known as shinrin-yoku, forest bathing is about consciously connecting with the forest. In the Aboriginal language the concept is known as dadirri, meaning deep listening or listening to the land as a way of maintaining presence in the moment. It may be a far cry from every-day life, but it will make total sense when you find yourself immersed in the rainforest at Crystalbrook. How to forest bathe? Switch your phone off, take a few deep breaths and walk slowly and mindfully through the forest. The Meditation loop is a perfect place to start, with inspirational quotes lining the trail, and benches to sit and contemplate. There is even a hugging tree – an ancient paperbark tree said to have healing energy after being blessed by an Aboriginal elder, a Buddhist monk and an Anglican priest. Tuning into the sounds of the forest – the breeze rustling through the leaves, the sound of birds flittering between the trees and the distant crash of waves on the shore will still your mind and shift you into a peaceful state of ‘being’ rather than ‘doing.’

This is the story of a group of six friends who share a passion for cooking (and eating) food that is ethical, authentic and delicious. Located at The Farm, Three Blue Ducks incorporates a sprawling restaurant, cafe and produce store with sweeping views over the fields and hinterland, and an ethos of creating honest, seasonal dishes packed with nutrients and flavour. Dine in, grab some fresh produce, enjoy something from the Argentinian grill or woodfire pizza oven, and enjoy live music on Friday and Saturday nights. You can also explore the 80-acre working farm with a house-made picnic hamper packed full of tasty goodies. Embracing a paddock to plate philosophy, much of the produce served is organic, sustainably farmed and sourced direct from the surrounding fields. Ever mindful about the environment, Three Blue Ducks also has 56 craft beers, ciders and wines on tap! While kids will love the playground and Ducklings menu.
