Journey To Success Viaje Al Exito

This past summer, I attended multiple programs. One of those programs was for engineering here in the Bay Area. The program had people from all over California and the rest of the country. Throughout the program, I began to feel inferior. They all spoke of how many engineering classes they had taken and are being offered at their schools, how many AP Physics classes they had, and how easy the college process was for them. I felt a foreigner in my own city. It took some time to finally come to terms with myself. It was not about what we did not have, but what we did have. I am proud of who I am and where I come from, always.

Was there a teacher that inspired you in the classroom? How?

Ms. Chavez was my first teacher in high school ever, having her first period for Spanish Heritage. Growing up, I was embarrassed to speak Spanish in public. Taking her class allowed me to become one with who I am. Her ability to connect with students surpassed any teacher I had ever had before. She understood the mental struggles that students were undergoing, and did her best to try to reach out and provide as much help as she could. The following two years, I continued my Spanish career with Ms. Huerta.

Huerta.

Preparation

Prep: 15 Minutes Cook: 35 Minutes Ready In: 1 Hour

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

INGREDIENTS · 1/4 Cup Crumpled Feta · 1 Large Turkey Breast · 1/2 Teaspoon Dried Oregano Cheese · 1/2 Teaspoon Ground Cumin · 12 Slices Reduced Sodium Bacon · Salt and Ground Pepper to Taste · 1 Cup Fresh Spinach, or to taste

Recipe courtesy of AllRecipes.com

Slice turkey breast down the middle and lay it flat. Sprinkle oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper on the inside of turkey. Arrange spinach leaves in 1 layer on 1 of the pieces of turkey and top with a layer of feta cheese. Repeat layering with spinach and feta cheese. Fold the other turkey breast half over the feta layer so the filling is sealed. Wrap the entire turkey breast with bacon. Place wrapped turkey in a baking dish and season with salt and pepper. Cook turkey breast until no longer pink in the center and the juices run clear, about 30 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 165 degrees F (74 degrees C). Turn on oven's broiler and broil wrapped turkey until bacon is crisp on each side, about 2 minutes per side. Let turkey rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Is there an incident that happened in your life that you would like to share with readers? What made you decide to be a teacher? As I pursued my bio career in college, I continued to work with different programs that in some way connected with education. I worked with programs like Migrant Ed and California Mini-Corps, that helped aid students during their school day to be successful in their education. In my second year in college, I realized that I was not happy with my chosen major and felt like I was in quicksand. The more time that would pass by, I was digging myself in something that I truly did not want to do with my career path. It was then I realized that I needed to change. I remembered how much I enjoyed my Spanish classes while in high school and decided to switch my major to Spanish in order to pursue my new career of being a Spanish teacher.

What is that one thing all students can do to Succeed Like Brian? One thing that students can do to be successful is to be an agent of where they want to go in life. It is important to have agency and really push for what you want, even if it may not be the correct choice at first.

Anna Chavez

Teacher at James Lick High School

Anna Chavez is currently a teacher at James Lick High School. She initially wanted to pursue biology so she could practice dentistry but then realized her passion was in teaching Spanish.

What I learned through my experience is that even though I did not choose the correct major at first, I knew I wanted to do something with my life.

Who was the most influential person in your life besides your parents? The most influential person in my life besides my awesome teacher Tara Coburn, is my brother, because of all the things I’ve seen him go through.

What do you like to do when you are not in school? I’m not a great student to be completely honest. My normal routine is to eat food, do “some” of my homework, eat some more, go to my gym for a couple hours, go home, and eat more. I do enjoy trying new ideas like where I can try new food or music. Listening to music really pushes me to be better, but also helps me see into myself. Two of my favorite artists are Naz and Whitney Houston. I also enjoy Mozart. I’m not that social with people so I tend to hangout with family often or by myself. After high school I plan on taking a gap year, go to community college, or a four-year university. After all of that I plan on starting a business by myself and with my brother.

But even less touched on is the subject of how recreational cannabis use is affecting the lives of common people. Will there be more health-related issues in our community?

MARIJUANA Continued • Continuado

In Colorado where Marijuana has been legal for some time already, fatal traffic collisions and in school drug violations saw a sharp increase. The worst side effect we came across however was that young people under the age of 17 are thought to be likelier in developing learning disabilities with chronic Marijuana use. At Local Community Heroes our verdict is that in moderation, the substance can be used responsibly as with Alcohol. Conversely, Marijuana’s use in medicine undoubtedly has immense potential. However, we believe as with all controlled substances such as Tobacco and Alcohol, adolescents should avoid use all together to prevent issues related to the brain such as with cognitive development.
