2018 Scholarship Ceremony by the Heroes Content Team

Thank you for tuning into our continuation Issue of Local Community Heroes. It’s been a long stretch of work preparing for our first official Scholarship Award Ceremony for our 2018 recipients! For those who were not able to attend the event, we highlighted an outstanding number of new recipients in our 2nd Anniversary Issue last month. Since then, because of this amazing generosity from our donors, we decided that we should begin to organize an event on June 28, 2018 to formalize our scholarship program for graduating high school students. Shockingly, after that issue we received 2 new inquiries into our scholarship program and thus we selected two new students who would attend the ceremony. Congratulations Zitlaly Martinez and Juan Jose Velazquez! We truly wish you the best in your academic endeavors. As you might expect, we called each student to the stage with their donors and provided them with a framed certificate to keep as a memory forever. The funny thing about this is that the idea hadn’t even occurred to us until we had finished creating the invitations to send out to our recipients and other guests. So, we put our design team up to the task of creating a certificate for each student, and eventually each donor. We hope we made this event memorable for all of you and hope this to be the case for all our future recipients. We owe a special thanks to all the caterers, donors, and the Friendship Hall in east San Jose for making this event possible. We also want to thank Ingrid Holguin and Luisiana Beltran representing Vice Mayor Magdalena Carrasco, for attending and speaking on stage. Scan the QR code to see some footage from the event and keep reading for stories about our donors.

Andrea Lam

Huy Khanh Nguyen

Doctor Andrew and Doctor Tracy Tran Toothfairy cottage has been a partner of Local Community Heroes for a long time. Because of this existing partnership, Dr. Andrew and Dr. Tracy were eager to choose students that they could aid on their Journey through college. We applaud them for their generous contributions on behalf of Andrea Lam (Independence High School) and Huy Khanh Nguyen (Yerba Buena High School). Huy wants to become a mathematician hoping that he can one day teach the subject. Andrea on the other hand wants to become a sociology major hoping to provide for her family in the future. We have high hopes that they will fulfill their dreams because our partners at Toothfairy Cottage saw something special in these young scholars.

Elizabeth Morales

Mohinder Mann Mohinder Mann read 30 some Scholarship applications and it was Elizabeth Morales that he ended up choosing. So, what influenced his decision? In Mr. Mann’s own words: “Elizabeth is determined to succeed. She will overcome life’s challenges. I am certain she will succeed in college. I see her developing as a leader and caring person in our community. She will make us all proud. My younger brother graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School long ago. I am Yerba Buena graduate class of 74’. We grew up on Ocala Ave and Cunningham Street near the High School. I will be happy to guide and mentor Elizabeth.”

Local Community Recipe Watermelon Lemonade Slushie

If you have a recipe you want to share with readers, why not send it to info@LocalCommunityHeroes.com?

Total Time: 10 Minutes Prep Time: 5 minutes

Servings: 4

Place the watermelon in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet, and freeze until completely frozen, like ice cubes, about 2 hours.

路 2 pounds cubed watermelon (about 4 cups) 路 1/2 cup sugar 路 1 large bunch basil, stems and leaves roughly chopped (about 2 cups), plus 4 whole leaves for garnish

Meanwhile, cook the sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is completely melted, about 5 minutes. Turn off the heat, add the chopped basil and stir until completely wilted. Cool completely at room temperature, at least 1 hour.

路 Juice of 3 lemons (about 1/2 cup)

Recipe courtesy of FoodNetwork.com

When the watermelon is completely frozen, put half in a blender. Strain the basil syrup into the blender, use the back of a wooden spoon or spatula to press down on the basil to extract as much flavor as possible, and discard the basil. Add the lemon juice, and blend until the mixture is mostly smooth, pushing it down with a wooden spoon or spatula if needed. Add the remaining watermelon, and continue to blend until the mixture is completely smooth. Spoon the mixture into 4 short glasses (or wineglasses, if you want to be fancy), and garnish each with a basil leaf.

Tyler Gordon

A talented young artist recalls Local Community Heroes

Among our invited guests was a young man called Tyler Gordon. Some of you may remember him from our 19th issue and some of you may have heard about him in mainstream media rising to prominence as a young talented artist who specializes in creating paintings for celebrities and other prominent figures. In the latest news about Tyler, Kevin Hart, a prominent comedian and actor recognized Tyler’s talents and requested that he make a piece for him. Tyler was also featured on Steve Harvey’s Little Big Shots showing off his talent for Mr. Harvey. We were very happy to see this talented young man and his mother showing their support for our gradually growing organization. Our CEO Hemant Desai invited Tyler to the stage and to his surprise, Tyler composed a very skillfully made portrait of him to commemorate the role that Local Community Heroes has had on his early career. Liliana Medel We would like to appreciate Liliana Medel, owner of Lili’s Sweet Memories for her generous donation to Juan Jose Velasquez from William C. Overfelt High School. We would also like to thank Manuel Luna, Lili’s son, for representing his mother on stage and giving words of inspiration to Juan. Juan is aspiring to major in Kinesiology with the goal of becoming a physical therapist. We also asked Juan why he applied for the scholarship in the first place and to our surprise, Juan met our CEO Hemant Desai when he visited his classroom to talk about our scholarship program. Juan also seems very intent on giving back to the community and we believe that Liliana chose very well with Juan and that he will be very successful.

Vanessa Flores Gonzales

Cesar Pascal and Connie Alvarez We would like to recognize Cesar Pascal and Connie Alvarez for not only generously donating to Vanessa Flores Gonzalez for her academic endeavors, but also for providing the beautiful Friendship Hall on the evening of June 28, 2018. Without the trust that they have developed in Local Community Heroes, the scholarship ceremony could not have been more beautiful. With regards to Vanessa, she is a recent graduate from William C. Overfelt High School aspiring to major in Biology and move on to medical school to practice pediatrics. Vanessa also seemed very happy that she would relieve some of the burden on her parents. Overall she is very selfless, and we believe that Cesar and Connie Chose well.

A Message from CEO Hemant Desai Why, Why, And Why Are There Students on the Cover Page?

I’ve had the idea of representing students and their mentors in local publications for a very long time. For three and a half years, I tried to tell other publications that this would be a new and interesting idea and was simply told that it wouldn’t sell as well as gossip and celebrity magazines. My motive however was not the profit. Rather, it was that there seemed to be no interest in recognizing the good deeds of citizens in local publications. This is exactly why I decided to start Local Community Heroes. Local Community Heroes or Héroes de la Comunidad is a bilingual publication which aims to shed light on the achievements of Students and their Teachers within the local and Latino community. We want to motivate good deeds and to share success stories to inspire others to rid themselves of their barriers. We also want to emphasize the effects that teachers have on the community and how they can inspire students in such a way that their lives are changed. It is easy to consume media made only of controversy and sensationalism but here at Local Community Heroes, we insist that good content should be about the positive things in life. Anyone can do great things and be on our cover. To do this, we prioritize including students who are not as financially privileged. No matter what circumstances you are born into, you can be successful. This was the reason why we started our scholarship program. Finances should not be a barrier to dreams. You don’t have to be perusing a law, medical, or engineering degree either. So long as you are passionate about your desired career, we are happy to consider you as a recipient. I would like to personally thank those businesses and individuals that donated their hard-earned money on behalf of Students for both 2017 and 2018. I would like to invite parents, businesses, and our local government to keep supporting the positive upbringing of children and their futures by continuing to support students with Scholarships in 2019.

Breenu Sra and Rita Singh We would like to thank Breenu Sra, and Rita Singh for their generosity on behalf of Christian John Cruz Ventura, a recent graduate from Yerba Buena High School, and of course we want to thank Saihaj Sra for supporting his mother on stage. Christian wants to pursue science and hopes to finish his career in four years which is very ambitious for a STEM major. In addition to Christian’s academics, he is very community driven and has served his local church for a very long time. We are very confident that our donors have made the right choice.

Zitlaly Martinez

Claudio Jennifer

Servando Sandoval We would like to thank Mr. Servando Sandoval and his family for his generous donation towards the academic endeavors of Zitlaly Martinez from Oak Grove High School. She is very appreciative of her donor and she seems to be of the mind that her goals can only be achieved by working very hard whereas money is only part of that journey. Zitlaly will also be perusing a degree in psychology and we know that Servando made the right choice with someone that is inclined to help others.

Luis Muñoz Luis has also been a long-time friend of Local Community Heroes and we are happy about the results that this relationship has brought us both. We must appreciate Mr. Muñoz’s generosity for his generous donation on behalf of Lesly Anguiano Urías from Andrew P. Hill High School. Lesly wants to peruse a degree in Spanish and teach the subject in the future. She is clearly very community driven and we believe that Mr. Muñoz will be proud of his decision to donate in the long term as well.
