Story of a champion Leilani who found her way out of a dark place in her life

The story of Leilani Good is an inspiring one in that it is not only a story of recovery, but also a story about how reaching out to others and letting them in to your heart can bring out the best in people.

Here at Local Community Heroes, we want to focus on the positive aspects of things. While Leilani has endured a great deal of hardships, including a trip to the hospital, we want everyone who might feel or might have felt the same at some point to realize that they are not alone. In Leilani’s case, she found herself in a dark place, enduring feelings of sorrow and isolation, but the unique part about this story is that she trusted those closest to her and allowed them to encourage her, as well as realizing that her situation needed to change given that her depression had transcended beyond that which she had ever endured. In her interview (which you can view by scanning the QR code), Leilani also encourages those in a similar predicament to seek help; it is one of the most value steps one can take on their journey to attain happiness.

Furthermore, we asked Leilani about her accomplishments, and aspirations. She noted that her artistic skill had been noticed by the ROTC organization at her school. Particularly one of Leilani’s instructors at ROTC has asked her personally to create illustrations for some of his children’s stories.

Interestingly, Leilani also aspires to join the marines, as well as engage in criminal investigation work such as becoming a detective. In addition, Leilani also wanted to recognize the support of her girlfriend, who has been the most inspirational and encouraging person to her in her journey of achievements and wellness.

After interviewing Leilani, we also wanted to interview Breenu Sra, a warm-hearted woman who oversaw Leilani’s recovery process. She remarks that in addition to the importance of surrounding yourself with supportive individuals, Leilani did so but at the same time her recovery was largely due to her incredible amount of determination. Breenu in her interview (watch her interview with the QR code) also inquires that you are not alone, and that schools have a plethora of resources where students can reach out for help.

Breenu also talks about her inspiration that she learned from those around her. One can retain qualities that they perceive to be noble from others. In particular, she was raised by an Italian family as an exchange student that taught Breenu many of her values. Breenu also takes her passion for the wellness of students to other schools in the city of San Jose including Branham High School. In addition, Breenu is also pursuing a degree in Law as a supplement to her previous career experience. She believes in a passion for education, and that she can further expand her role in the wellness of children.

Local Community Recipe Chicken and Asparagus Risotto

Preparation Total Time: 30 Minutes 1) Remove the meat from the chicken, discarding the skin and bones. Chop the chicken into bite-size pieces and set aside (you should have about 3 cups). In a medium saucepan, bring water and broth to boiling; reduce heat to low and cover to keep warm.

2) Meanwhile, in a 4- to 6-quart Dutch oven, cook shallots in hot oil over medium heat for 4 to 5 minutes or until just tender, stirring occasionally. Add rice. Cook and stir over medium heat 2 to 3 minutes or until rice begins to brown.

INGREDIENTS 1 deli-roasted chicken 3 1/2 cups water 1 14 - ounce can reduced sodium chicken broth 2 medium shallots, cut thinly 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 1/2 cups arborio rice 1 pound fresh asparagus, trimmed and cut

1/2 cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese 2 cups coarsely chopped fresh arugula or spinach 2 teaspoons snipped fresh tarragon or 2 tablespoons snipped fresh chives 1 teaspoon lemon zest, plus additional as optional garnish

3) Slowly add 1 cup of the warm water mixture to the rice mixture, stirring constantly, until liquid is absorbed. Add another 1/2 cup of the liquid, stirring constantly until liquid is absorbed. Repeat two more times, using 1/2 cup liquid each time. Stir in asparagus. Add remaining water mixture, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring constantly and allowing the liquid to absorb before adding more liquid. (This should take 15 to 20 minutes total.)

4) Reduce heat to low. Add the shredded Parmesan cheese; stir until melted and smooth. Add chopped chicken; cook, uncovered, for 1 to 2 minutes or until heated through. Remove from the heat.

Stir in arugula, tarragon and lemon zest. If you like, top with additional lemon zest and/or shaved Parmesan before serving.
