Terracotta TONES

Terracotta, a warm earthy hue reminiscent of baked clay, is a versatile and inviting colour that pairs well with a variety of shades, creating harmonious and visually appealing combinations. When considering colours that complement terracotta, it’s essential to balance the warmth of the earthy tone with contrasting or coordinating colors to achieve a well-rounded and aesthetically pleasing palette. To enhance the richness of terracotta, one can opt for neutral tones such as beige, cream, or soft whites. These subdued hues provide a subtle backdrop that allows the terracotta to stand out while maintaining a sense of sophistication and warmth. Additionally, neutrals create a timeless and calming atmosphere, making them ideal for larger surfaces like walls or furniture.

For a more dynamic and modern look, pairing terracotta with shades of blue can be an excellent choice. Deep navy or serene teal can create a striking contrast against the warm undertones of terracotta, evoking a sense of balance and depth. These combinations are particularly effective in interiors, where the juxtaposition of warm and cool tones can make a space feel vibrant and inviting.

Earth-inspired tones like olive green or mustard yellow also complement terracotta, creating a cohesive and nature-inspired colour scheme. These muted

6 WINDSOR LOCAL • EASTER 2024

yet bold colors harmonise with terracotta, creating a connection to the outdoors and infusing spaces with a touch of organic warmth. This combination is well-suited for various design styles, from bohemian to rustic, and can be applied to both interiors and exteriors. Incorporating metallic accents, such as copper or brass, can add a touch of luxury to terracotta-inspired palettes. These metallic tones introduce a level of sophistication and refinement, creating an elegant and balanced look. Consider using metallic elements in decor items, lighting fixtures, or accessories to bring a touch of glamour to a room.

Terracotta serves as a versatile and grounding base colour that pairs well with neutrals, blues, earthy greens, yellows, and metallics. The key is to strike a balance between warm and cool tones, allowing for a diverse range of design possibilities that cater to personal preferences and the overall aesthetic of the space. Whether used in interiors or exteriors, terracotta provides a timeless and inviting backdrop that can be easily customised to suit different styles and moods.

Bathroom REVOLUTION!

Cutting-edge bathroom design is a dynamic and evolving field that seamlessly combines functionality, technology, and aesthetic appeal to create spaces that go beyond mere utility. In recent years, designers have been pushing boundaries, exploring innovative materials, integrating smart technologies, and embracing sustainable practices to redefine the concept of a modern bathroom.

One key trend in cutting-edge bathroom design is the incorporation of smart technologies. From smart mirrors that display weather updates and news to voice-activated fixtures that adjust water temperature and lighting, technology is seamlessly woven into the fabric of contemporary bathrooms. Smart showers with customisable water settings, automated faucets with touchless controls, and intelligent toilets with features like seat warmers and built-in bidets contribute to a futuristic and convenient bathroom experience. In terms of materials, designers are increasingly experimenting with unconventional and sustainable options. Engineered stone, such as quartz, is a popular choice for countertops and surfaces due to its durability and low maintenance. Recycled and eco-friendly materials, including

8 WINDSOR LOCAL • EASTER 2024
reclaimed wood and bamboo, are being utilized for flooring and accent pieces, promoting both style and environmental responsibility. Open-concept

designs are gaining traction in cutting-edge bathroom layouts. Removing traditional barriers and partitions, designers are creating fluid, interconnected spaces that enhance the sense of openness and visual appeal. Walk-in showers with frameless glass enclosures and freestanding bathtubs positioned as focal points contribute to an uncluttered and sophisticated atmosphere. Innovative lighting plays a pivotal role in modern bathroom design. LED strips integrated into mirrors or recessed into ceilings provide customisable and energy-efficient illumination.

Designers are also exploring the use of natural light, incorporating skylights and expansive windows to create a bright and airy ambiance. Smart lighting systems that can adjust colour temperature and intensity according to the time of day contribute to a personalised and wellnessoriented bathroom environment.

Storage solutions are evolving to meet the demands of contemporary lifestyles, with hidden cabinets, floating shelves, and built-in niches providing discreet yet ample storage space. This minimalist approach enhances the overall aesthetic while maintaining functionality. Additionally, multifunctional furniture, such as vanity units with integrated sinks and storage compartments, adds a layer of efficiency to cutting-edge bathroom designs. The integration of biophilic design principles is another notable trend. Bringing elements of nature into the bathroom through the use of live plants, natural materials, and earthy colour palettes creates a soothing and rejuvenating atmosphere. Living walls, which incorporate vertical gardens into bathroom spaces, not only contribute to aesthetics but also promote a sense of well-being.

The modern bathroom is no longer just a functional space but a sanctuary that embraces the latest advancements in design and technology while prioritising aesthetics and environmental consciousness. As designers continue to explore new frontiers, the future promises even more exciting and revolutionary developments in the world of bathroom design.

WINDSOR MUSEUM

The Windsor and Royal Borough Museum is a cultural gem that offers visitors a captivating journey through the rich history and heritage of our Royal Borough. With its diverse exhibits, engaging displays, and interactive presentations, the museum provides an immersive experience for history enthusiasts, locals, and tourists alike.

The museum’s location within the Guildhall, a Grade I listed building which holds particular significance, is surrounded by the historic landmarks of Windsor Castle. This proximity allows visitors to explore the interconnected stories of the region, weaving a tapestry of royal heritage, local traditions, and the evolution of the community through the centuries. The museum is considered to be the jewel in our Royal Borough’s crown. The Collection, which started in 1951 for an exhibition for the Festival of Britain in the Guildhall, was opened

by Her Majesty the Queen in its now permanent home in 2011.

One of the museum’s standout features is its extensive collection of artifacts dating back to various periods, ranging from medieval relics to artifacts from the Victorian era, the museum meticulously preserves and showcases the tangible remnants of the past. Visitors can marvel at intricate tapestries, ancient manuscripts, and period costumes that provide a glimpse into the daily lives of those who once called Windsor home.

10 WINDSOR LOCAL • EASTER 2024

The museum also dedicates space to the illustrious history of Windsor Castle, offering a comprehensive look into the lives of the British royals. Interactive exhibits allow visitors to virtually explore the opulent rooms of the castle, learn about the monarchs who resided within its walls, and understand the castle’s role in shaping the course of British history. This immersive experience is enhanced by multimedia presentations, bringing the stories to life in a dynamic and engaging manner. The museum strives to foster a sense of connection between past and present, encouraging visitors to appreciate the historical roots that have shaped the community they see today.

The Windsor and Royal Borough Museum goes beyond traditional exhibits, incorporating technology to enhance the visitor experience. Virtual reality installations and interactive touchscreens provide a modern twist to historical narratives, appealing to a wide audience, including younger visitors eager to engage with history in innovative ways. In a typical year there are over 65,000 visits to the museum, with 100 events organised for over 2,000 residents including school group visits to the museum. In addition to its permanent exhibits, the museum hosts temporary displays and events, ensuring that each visit offers something new and exciting. Educational programs, guided tours, and workshops cater to various age groups, making the museum an ideal destination for both school outings and family visits.

Indeed the Windsor and Royal Borough Museum remains standing as a beacon of cultural preservation, inviting visitors to embark on a captivating journey through the region’s past. Its diverse exhibits, interactive presentations, and commitment to education make it a must-visit destination for those seeking to uncover the layers of history that have shaped the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead into the charming and historically significant locale it is today.

And, not to be missed, is the The Crooked House of Windsor, which is next door to the Museum and is also known as the Market Cross House, and which dates back to the 16th century. As its name suggests, this building is bent at a rather awkward angle that

seems to defy gravity. Still, this building had not always been tilted, and only became so when it was rebuilt. Amazingly, in spite of its posture, the Crooked House of Windsor has remained standing. Apart from the building’s crookedness, another interesting feature about the Crooked House of Windsor is the secret passageway (now blocked) that connected it to Windsor Castle, and we will delve more into the history (and intrigue) of that story in the next issue! by Jacqui Priestley.

Dubrovnik

A Croation Gem

Dubrovnik, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” is a captivating destination that leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of its visitors.

Steeped in history, adorned with stunning architecture, and surrounded by the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea, this Croatian gem beckons tourists with its timeless charm and rich cultural tapestry. As one approaches Dubrovnik, the first glimpse of the city is nothing short of magical. The imposing medieval walls rise proudly, encircling the old town like a protective embrace. These walls, a UNESCO World Heritage site, not only provide a formidable shield but also offer panoramic views of the cityscape and the shimmering sea beyond. Standing atop these ancient fortifications, one can’t help but feel a sense of awe at the centuries of history that have unfolded within the city’s confines. Entering the Pile Gate, the main entrance to the old town, is akin to stepping back in time. Cobbled streets wind through a labyrinth of limestone buildings, each telling a story of Dubrovnik’s past. The Stradun, the city’s main thoroughfare, stretches from the Pile Gate to the Ploče Gate, lined with charming shops, cafes, and Baroque-

style buildings that showcase the city’s architectural prowess. Strolling along this bustling street, one can’t escape the feeling of being transported to a bygone era.

Dubrovnik’s crown jewel is undoubtedly the Rector’s Palace, a harmonious blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The palace, with its intricate facade and elegant interior, served as the seat of the Republic of Ragusa’s government. Exploring its chambers, filled with historical artifacts and opulent decor, provides a glimpse into the opulence and sophistication of Dubrovnik’s golden age. The city is not just a testament to its historical grandeur but also a living museum where the past seamlessly intertwines with the present. The Franciscan Monastery, with its tranquil cloister and a pharmacy that dates back to 1317, exemplifies this coexistence. The monastery stands as a haven of peace amid the city’s vibrant energy, inviting visitors to reflect on the passage of time.

For those seeking spiritual nourishment, the Dubrovnik Cathedral is a sanctuary of divine beauty. The Baroque-style cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, houses a treasury of

religious art and relics. The glistening silver and gold artifacts, along with the serene atmosphere, create a spiritual experience that transcends denominational boundaries. The city’s cultural richness is not confined to its buildings but extends to its vibrant festivals. Dubrovnik Summer Festival, an annual celebration of the arts, transforms the city into a stage for music, theatre, and dance. The ancient walls become a backdrop for Shakespearean plays, and the Stradun turns into an open-air concert hall, enveloping the city in a kaleidoscope of artistic expression.

Dubrovnik’s allure is not limited to its architectural wonders and cultural events; the Adriatic Sea serves as both a scenic backdrop and a playground for water enthusiasts. A boat ride to the nearby Lokrum Island offers respite from the bustling city. The island, adorned with lush gardens and historic ruins, invites visitors to bask in nature’s tranquility while enjoying breathtaking views of Dubrovnik’s skyline.

A tourist’s perception of Dubrovnik is likely to be a multifaceted tapestry woven with threads of history, culture, natural beauty, and culinary delights. The city’s ability to transport visitors to a different era while embracing the present is what makes Dubrovnik a timeless destination. Whether exploring its medieval streets, attending a summer festival, or savouring the flavors of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik leaves an indelible mark that transcends the boundaries of time and space.

Making Memories

My wife and I have lived in Windsor for 23 years. You know what it’s like – you stop looking at the beauty around because you see it everyday.

We seem to have everything we need and instead we’re looking to make memories - so when we saw “Excalibur on the Thames” moored on the Brocas we got chatting to the owners, Steve and Andrew, who told us that she was available for events and holidays! We were so enthralled that we booked a two-day trip on Excalibur – to treat ourselves.

Steve and Andrew picked us up in Eton, and we were shown on to the 65ft Dutch Barge – which is even bigger on the inside than it looks! – all for our exclusive use, as they take only two guests at a time for residential breaks. It is tastefully decorated in wood and navy blue - with a burgeoning drinks

trolley and two huge wine racks – she was our “home” while we were onboard. Having opened the complimentary champagne thoughtfully left in our cabin, there was a blast on the horn and we were off – cruising gently away from Windsor, with the Castle glistening behind us (we made a mental note to book one of Excalibur’s “Dinner in Windsor” experiences, so we could treat our family, with the town as our backdrop – they take up to 10 guests for these).

It was a warm day, and we soon got the hang of waving at passing boats and dog-walkers as we

gently sailed “up stream” (we learned all the jargon!), through locks and seeing “our patch” with totally new eyes – passing “The Waterside Inn” at Bray and seeing the homes of the millionaires which back onto the river – amused by ducks and enchanted by swans – stunned by how beautiful Cliveden Reach was in the summer sunshine – all from our own private sundeck at the front … sorry Steve, I mean “at the Bow”!

In the early evening we moored in a leafy nook on the Cliveden Reach and took a romantic stroll along the tow-path as Andrew prepared a beautiful dinner for the two of us to enjoy in the wheelhouse.

We ate like Kings as the sun faded (Braised lamb shanks with creamy mash and honey-roasted carrots, followed by Basque Cheesecake) until, after coffee and cognac in the dark on the sundeck, we were ready to retire. No noise, no pressure, no waves –just peace and a fabulous night’s sleep.

In the morning Andrew and Steve (in their natty blue polo-shirts) greeted us with fresh coffee and orange-juice, and we helped ourselves to a Continental breakfast buffet in our private living room, before Steve took the wheel again. It was lovely to just sit and talk and laugh, without a care in the world. We fell in love with the River again.

We sailed, quietly and contentedly, (with a plentiful platter of charcuterie for lunch – and bottomless soft drinks) to Henley, where we welcomed friends on board for cocktails and dinner.

The following morning we had another leisurely breakfast overlooking Leander Club before leaving Excalibur, giving us plenty of time to explore the town before going home.

What an experience – what memories!

Excalibur on the Thames is a truly wonderful venture and we wish the boys well. They have thought of everything, and go all-out to ensure their guests are happy. They are fun and attentive, but not imposing. They clearly love their work and our River, and really deserve their 26 5* ratings. We will definitely be back – if they will have us!

Gratitude has many benefits. Research has shown that gratitude, when practiced regularly over an extended period of time, can: help diminish depressive symptoms, lower anxiety, and form resilience; increase empathy, self-esteem, and happiness; reduce restlessness, increase energy, and improve overall functioning; support better and longer sleep and improve relationships by increasing key elements to deeper bonds such as appreciation and vulnerability.

So, how can you practice gratitude to cope with negativity and challenges?

1. Reframe and challenge your automatic thoughts

Be aware of your negativity bias. We all tend to have a thought pattern of weighing negativity more than positivity. To combat the negative go-to thoughts, intentionally seek out the positive. Try taking a step back. Pause. Then, switch your perspective to identify what you can be grateful for in each situation, no matter how big or small. (Feeling stressed about work? You can intentionally acknowledge that you are lucky to have a job that keeps you financially stable. Missing someone? How about thinking, “I am so lucky to have someone I care about?”)

2. Give yourself time and space to worry and be grateful

Practicing gratitude does not mean ignoring the bad in your life. Bad things happen, but providing a more accurate depiction of the scenario can help reduce the spiraling of negative emotions. Give yourself time to think and worry - it’s OK to feel worried, or angry, or frustrated about a particular situation. If you

WINDSOR LOCAL • EASTER 2024 28

find yourself dwelling too much on what’s worrying you, try setting aside “Worry Time.” Notice how long you’re spending worrying about a particular situation. Then, spend the same amount of time noting things you can be grateful for to counteract the negativity.

3. Make gratitude part of your daily routine

Being authentically grateful is hard. To build a sustainable gratitude practice, make it a part of your daily routine. There are several ways you can do so, but here are some suggestions:

Start your day by spending five minutes (or more) setting daily intentions centered around gratitude. Have gratitude check-ins during the tough times of your day. You can set alarms throughout the day to reflect back on your intentions and to acknowledge the positive parts of your day so far.

Keep a memory jar to note things that went well, things you’re grateful for, and happy moments from the past. Choose a memory from the jar to read anytime you’re having a tough time.

Reflect on the positives at the end of the day. Journaling or mentally noting what went well before bed can help promote better sleep.

4. Send gratitude outwards for greater results

Expressing appreciation for others reaps greater benefits and can help build stronger relationships than practicing gratitude internally. Get creative in the ways you show meaningful appreciation to others. Write a letter to someone you’re thankful for, plan a surprise, or even just verbally express your appreciation to someone.

5. Practice forward-thinking gratitude

Some days, practicing gratitude in the present can be hard. During those times, try creating moments to look forward to that you know you will be grateful for, such as scheduling a movie night for yourself, playing a game you’ve been wanting to, hanging out with a friend, and so on. Reflect on what excites you about that moment.

What can we conclude?

The positive effects of gratitude are far-reaching, encompassing mental, physical, and social aspects of well-being. Cultivating a grateful mindset can lead to improved mental health, enhanced physical well-being, better sleep, stronger social connections, effective stress management, and increased selfesteem. By acknowledging and appreciating the positive aspects of life, individuals can unlock a myriad of benefits that contribute to a more fulfilling and satisfying existence. Embracing gratitude as a daily practice is a simple yet powerful step toward creating a happier and more meaningful life.

RAYNOR MASSAGE THE POWER OF

Not many people have heard of Raynor Massage. Yet it is one of the most advanced massage therapy styles in the world. The goal of Raynor Massage is to relieve a person of residual tension, or muscle tightness in an area of the body when the body is at rest.

So, if you are lying on a massage table and you can feel that your muscles are tight or aching, or muscles are sore when firmly touched, you likely have tension in your body. As we get older, particularly after our 30s, tension tends to build up in our bodies. This increases the probability of sustaining sprain and strain injuries.

Raynor Massage is a holistic system of bodywork developed by Naturopath Brandon Raynor. Brandon spent many years studying Eastern modalities such as Ayurvedic Massage, Chinese Medicine, Thai Massage, Reflexology, Shiatsu and Yoga breath work. From an understanding of these, the techniques that form Raynor Massage evolved.

Raynor Massage has the concept of bands interconnecting the whole body, known as Raynor Bands. The bands are composed of muscles, tendons, ligaments and other body tissues. Underlying these physical bands are subtle energy systems (chi or prana) similar to Meridians in Chinese Medicine, Sen lines in Thai Massage, or Nadis in Ayurvedic Massage. When the flow of chi or prana is disrupted in the bands, muscles can tighten, bones can shift out of place, or tension can be created in the body. Note that the disruption can be caused physically (e.g. an injury) or emotionally (e.g. mental stress).

30 WINDSOR LOCAL • EASTER 2024

It has been found that the main anchor points for tension are the fingers, toes and head. These are key areas where chi or prana can become stagnated. Raynor Bands run right to the tips of the fingers and toes, and to the top of the head.

When diagnosing a person’s tension the areas looked at include the toes (e.g. are they straight or pulled over, are they loose or do they spring back when pushed?), fingers (e.g. do the joints have any lateral movement or are they stiff?), head (e.g. is the scalp tight?), and the muscles of the limbs and back (e.g. when pressed, are they sore?).

So, unlike most other types of massages, Raynor Massage places emphasis on fingers, toes, and head. For example, if a person has a tight hamstring the toes are massaged first (where tension is anchored), then the foot and ankle. Once tension has been reduced in these, Raynor Bands running up the back of the leg are massaged, the calf first and then the hamstring area. Once tension is reduced at the anchor points, tension further along the bands can typically be reduced relatively easily. Deep tissue massage, acupressure techniques and massage tools are used.

For deep-rooted tension there is a ‘partnership model’ between therapist and client meaning that they work together to achieve successful results. In brief, the therapist gently presses a tool into the toe or finger to bring awareness of the tension to the client (the pressure is never more than the client can handle). At the same time, the client uses deep breathing to “breathe out” the tension. The result is that the toe

or finger is loosened up and feels much looser. It doesn’t sound credible, but it works!

Raynor Massage has proved to be a very effective way of reducing tension in the body and alleviating ailments such as back pain, headaches, stress, tight muscles and so on. Many of us tend to live with tension, but when removed it’s like having a new body! Further information: www.raynormassage.com

Does Getting Older Really Have to Be Like This?

In our relentless, interconnected 21st century world that never powers down, operating 24/7, every day of the year, our bodies are subjected to extraordinary physical demands.

There is the ancient and famous riddle of the Sphinx: “What is it that has one voice, and yet becomes four-footed, and two-footed and threefooted?”. In Greek mythology, Oedipus provided the correct answer: the human being, who crawls on all fours in infancy, walks on two legs in adult hood, and leans on a cane in old age.

But does getting older really have to be like this? Why does it happen in the first place? And what can we do to retain our ability to walk upright and with ease?

Despite 21st century scientific breakthroughs in treating numerous diseases, and the widespread availability of pain relief medications, more than a third of the world’s population are in some type of pain, most or all the time. In the 2017 Health Survey

for England the survey highlighted the prevalence of chronic pain increasing with age, ranging from 18% among those aged 16-34 years, to 53% among those 75 years and over. Women (38%) reported a higher prevalence of chronic pain than men (30%). Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists or recurs for longer than 3 months. For people living in pain for an extended period of time it can significantly impact emotional wellbeing, concentration, and daily activities often necessitating lifestyle adjustments.

So, what’s the solution?

The answer lies in the practice of Clinical Somatics a core practice at Bodymanoeuvres, where Jane Basley, uses this profoundly effective therapeutic technique to alleviate clients’ pain, and restore their mobility and enjoyment of life.

Clinical Somatics focuses on the sensory-motor system, and clients learn how to regain control of

32 WINDSOR LOCAL • EASTER 2024

their muscles through movement and awareness. Grounded in the principles of neuromuscular education it addresses the root cause of most musculoskeletal pain - chronic muscular contraction. This happens when we repeat unhelpful movements, such as excessive mobile phone use or prolonged desk sitting. By retraining the nervous system to release involuntary muscle tension, Clinical Somatics not only eases pain but also improves mobility, flexibility, and overall bodily function.

Unlike treatments that offer temporary relief, Clinical Somatics empowers individuals to make lasting changes to their physical and mental health. It teaches clients to become active participants in their healing journey, fostering a deep connection with their bodies that transcends the physical aspects of health.

The technique utilises pandiculation to relieve chronic pain. As human beings we pandiculate when we stretch or yawn, especially when waking up. If you’ve ever seen a dog or cat arch their back when they get up from a nap, or watched a baby stretch their arms and legs as they wake up, you’ve witnessed the pandicular response.

Clinical Somatics engages the nervous system in an active learning process that consists of very slow, focused, conscious movements. The exercises used teach the nervous system how to release chronic muscle tension so that we can learn to stand and move in a more natural and efficient way.

It’s effective because it addresses the underlying cause of most muscle and joint pain: the way the nervous system functions.

Clinical Somatics has proven effective in treating a wide array of conditions such as back pain, breathing issues, disc problems, forward head posture, hip and knee pain, neck and shoulder tension and pain, plantar fasciitis, and sciatica, among others. Importantly, once learned, the exercises can be continued at home, eliminating the need for frequent, costly, visits to practitioners.

If a medical practitioner has ruled out disease, infection or structural damage as being the cause of chronic pain in the body it’s fairly safe to say that the pain, is a result of the way the body is being used.

Thomas Hanna, the movement theorist, that developed our modern-day somatic exercises believed that as we age, our bodies, and our lives, should continue to improve right up until our final moments. This philosophy underpins Clinical Somatics, offering a hopeful perspective for those seeking to reclaim their mobility and quality of life no matter what their age.

WHY WE CAN’T HELP GETTING INTO CONFLICT

Nobody enjoys being in an argument. No, not even your ex! Conflict is distressing and uncomfortable. It’s bad enough at home, but conflict at work is a leading cause of stress and anxiety for employees.

So why do we argue?

I’m a workplace investigator and mediator, and I specialise in managing conflict within businesses. In this article, I’m going to give you a quick introduction to the four cognitive biases that predispose us to conflict.

An introduction to cognitive bias

Every one of us is susceptible to cognitive biases. These arise from the beliefs and assumptions that influence how we interpret the world around us. We all have them. It doesn’t matter how reasonable or rational you think you are, nobody is immune. There’s nothing inherently wrong with cognitive biases. In fact, many of them help our brains find mental shortcuts to simplify and reduce the amount of conscious decision making we need to do in daily life. However, a side effect of this is that they can sometimes cause us to misinterpret things, or make irrational judgements.

The four cognitive biases of conflict

There are many cognitive biases that affect us, but I’m going to concentrate on the four that are especially relevant to how conflicts arise and escalate.

1 - First person perspective bias

We all grow up and experience the world differently. We build up a picture of what the world is like based on our experiences and observations, our interactions

with parents, teachers, friends, and so on. Our views on society, politics, economics, whether other people are fundamentally good or bad, are all founded upon how our view of the world has formed.

This leads us to believe that our view of the world is the correct view. This is what causes first-person perspective bias: “the world is how I see it”.

2 - Illusory superiority bias (the ‘Dunning-Kruger’ effect)

In order to thrive in the world and not collapse into depression, we need to believe that we can do things. The confidence to adapt to circumstances, overcome problems, learn and apply new skills, and so on. Unfortunately, we can sometimes be a bit overconfident in our abilities.

You can demonstrate this effect with an experiment. Put a hundred people in a room, each with a remote control that allows them to vote in secret (no raised hands). Ask them some questions:

38 WINDSOR LOCAL • EASTER 2024

• “Do you have above average intelligence?”

• “Are you a better than average driver?”

• “Do you feel you are more reasonable and rational than most other people?”

• “Do you believe you are above average at your job?” Guess what? Most people respond “YES”. We like to believe that we’re good at what we do. Nobody thinks they do a bad job at work, yet we can all think of someone else who’s not doing well. Also, how often have you muttered to yourself about how irrational or stupid other people are on social media?

This is our illusory superiority bias: “I have above average intelligence, rationality & reasoning”.

3 - Confirmation bias

You’ve probably heard of this one. Confirmation bias is our tendency to pay more attention to observations that align with our beliefs, and to disregard or distrust observations that contradict our beliefs. Or to put it another way: “all my observations confirm that what I believe is true”.

4

- False consensus bias

This bias is interesting because it is supported by the other three. False consensus bias is the believe that all ‘right thinking’ people agree with you, on the assumption that you’re point of view is correct.

Now let’s put these together… The world is how I see it and...

I have above average intelligence, rationality & reasoning abilities plus...

My observations conform my views - time & time again so surely...

All right-thinking people agree with me therefore...

IF YOU DISAGREE WITH ME, YOU MUST BE WRONG!

Imagine two people with different points of view, but with this same psychology. Conflict is almost inevitable! Okay, but what can we do about it? That’s a topic for another article. Let me know if you want me to write it!

Meanwhile, if you’re an employer and need help with conflict or grievances at work, get in touch for a no obligation conversation about how I can help.

KEEP COOL ON THE HOTTEST OF SUMMER DAYS

Practical and stylish, retractable sun awnings create a striking roof over your terrace to provide the ultimate alfresco living space.

Blocking the sun’s heat, sun awnings keep you, your family and friends cool on even the hottest of summer days. Water-repellent, our patio awnings also offer shelter from those unexpected and often persistent rain showers. Damaging UV rays are blocked whilst bright light is filtered to eliminate glare.

Plus with optional LED under awning lighting and instant infra-red heating, you will create a pleasant atmosphere on your terrace to enjoy all year round. Whether you live in a house, bungalow or apartment, on a two-storey or single storey façade, in the

countryside, inner-city or coast, outdoor retractable sun awnings are designed for every application, requirement and budget extending your living space outside with full protection from the elements.

And with the availability of design and build bespoke brackets, there are virtually no applications in the UK where a retractable sun awning cannot be installed. Retractable sun awnings are usually fixed externally to the ground floor wall of a home, or commercial building, full width above the window and or/entrance door. When retracted to the fully

40 WINDSOR LOCAL • EASTER 2024

closed position, sun awnings take up only a small amount of space as the awning arms and fabric retract into a full width cassette for long-term protection of the sun awning against the elements and a neat trim finish when not in use.

The awning arms and cassette are available in a number of ‘on-trend’ colours, with anthracite grey being a popular choice along with-ever popular white. Most sizes of areas can be covered by a retractable sun awning, with a size maximum of a single awning generally being 6.5M maximum width and a 3.5M maximum projection. For areas wider than 6.5M it is usual to install more than one awning alongside each other.

Installation is completed usually by two technicians with the help of an electrically operated awning lift that moves the awning safely into the install position ready to be attached to the wall. A normal 24v, 13 amp electrical supply is all that is required to power the awning’ tubular motor within the cassette.

Control of a sun awning is by a simple hand-held remote controller that quietly extends the awning

out to the required position and retracts it back into its cassette. Further automatic control options can be added by way of a wind sensor that retracts the awning back into the closed position should the wind rise to an unacceptable level and a sun sensor can also be included to open the awning automatically when the sun is at its fullest. Integral LED lighting and overhead heaters can also be added to ensure the awning can be enjoyed well into late autumn and early winter.

There are many challenges when it comes to textiles for awnings. They must, of course, serve well as sun protection, but without foregoing quality or colour. The fabrics are, of course, flame-retardant too, and the quality guarantees that the awning lasts well, even when used frequently. Made for a long, safe and beautiful awning life. fabrics for sun protection are well thought-through and are efficient, with over 200 designs to choose from.

Retractable sun awnings are a stylish and purposeful addition to our living space that help protect us from the harmful effects of the sun and extend our lifestyle to the outdoors with the minimum of intrusion.

SPECIES SPOTLIGHT THE SLOTH

Our brand new feature! In each issue we will be shining a light on a different species of animal, in conjunction with London Zoo. In this issue we give you fun facts all about sloths.

5 Fun Facts about Sloths, the most quirky and lovable of mammals...

1. Slow and Steady Wins the Race

One of the most well-known and amusing facts about sloths is their incredibly slow movement. Sloths are considered the slowest mammals on Earth, with an average speed of about 0.03 miles per hour. This slow pace is primarily due to their low metabolic rate and specialised anatomy. Sloths have a unique musculoskeletal system that allows them to conserve energy by moving slowly. While their sluggishness might seem like a disadvantage, it is a clever adaptation to their arboreal lifestyle.

2. Upside-Down Lifestyle

Sloths spend the majority of their lives hanging upside-down in trees. Their unique anatomy, including a specialised hip joint that allows for

easy rotation of their hind legs, makes this upsidedown lifestyle comfortable and efficient. In fact, sloths are so well-adapted to hanging from branches that they can even sleep, eat, and give birth in this position. This hanging lifestyle not only provides them with safety from ground predators but also allows them to blend in with the foliage, making it harder for predators to spot them.

3. Algae-Powered Camouflage

Sloths have a greenish tint to their fur, which is not due to their own pigmentation but rather the presence of algae. The slow-moving lifestyle of sloths makes them a perfect host for algae to grow on their fur. The algae not only provide a source of nutrients for certain insects but also act as a form of camouflage for the sloths. This greenish hue helps sloths blend in with the trees and foliage, offering them an added layer of protection against predators.

4. Three-Toed and Two-Toed Distinction

Sloths come in two main types: two-toed sloths and three-toed sloths. Despite the names, both types have three toes on their hind limbs, but they differ in the number of fingers on their front limbs. Two-toed sloths have two fingers, while three-toed sloths have three fingers. Interestingly, the distinction between two-toed and three-toed sloths goes beyond their digits. Two-toed sloths are generally larger and more active than their three-toed counterparts. While both types share the same laid-back lifestyle, the differences in behavior and size contribute to their unique charm.

5. Surprising Swimmers

While sloths are renowned for their slow and deliberate movements in trees, they surprisingly demonstrate an impressive ability when it comes to swimming. Sloths are capable swimmers and can move through water with surprising agility. They use a doggy paddle-style motion, and their long arms aid them in gliding through the water. Swimming allows sloths to cover greater distances, especially when trees are scarce or when they need to cross rivers in their natural habitats.

Sloths are fascinating creatures with a combination of unique features, from their slow-motion lifestyle and upside-down existence to their algae-covered fur and efficient digestive systems. Their distinct characteristics make them a subject of both scientific interest and popular fascination, adding to the charm of these quirky and lovable mammals.
