Rory loves sharing what he knows—whether it’s through social media videos or chatting with young people who are curious about tech and running their own business. Down-to-earth and full of drive, Rory has made Pratts Pods a real part of the Wokingham community and continues to grow it with heart, skill, and a lot of local love.

Pratts Pods offers a brilliant range of preloved, refurbished devices, giving customers access to topquality tech without the premium price tag. Each device is tested and restored by their in-house experts, ensuring it’s in excellent working condition

Rory opened his second shop in Henley-on-Thames last year which continues to go from strength to strength and as a proud family man who somehow manages to juggle running his busy tech repair business, with being a hands-on dad and husband to his wife, Mell.
Rory’s the kind of guy who’s just as likely to be fixing a tricky iPhone as he is helping with homework or heading off on a muddy walk with the kids.
Family means everything to him, and it shows—in the way he runs his business with care, honesty, and a real community vibe. Whether it’s at home or at work, Rory brings a big heart and a lot of laughs.

For Rory, his business is rooted in family values, and built on genuine connections. He treats every customer with care and respect, creating a welcoming space where service comes with a smile

Cascais; It’s Where I’m

The real transformation of Cascais began in the late 19th century when King Luís I chose it as his summer retreat. His presence attracted the Portuguese nobility, turning the town into a fashionable resort. Opulent villas, elegant promenades, and cultural institutions followed, many of which still stand today, reflecting the grandeur of that era. This royal endorsement helped cement Cascais’s reputation as an elite destination, a legacy that continues with its blend of tradition

Culturally, Cascais has long been a haven for artists, writers, and intellectuals, particularly during the early 20th century and the Second World War, when it offered refuge to exiled royals and European aristocrats. This cosmopolitan influx enriched the local cultural scene, fostering a spirit of openness and creativity that remains evident in its galleries, museums, and festivals.
The town’s maritime heritage remains central to its identity. Its bustling marina, traditional fishing boats, and annual sailing events underline the enduring connection to the sea. Local cuisine reflects this heritage, with fresh seafood playing a starring role in many traditional dishes.

Today, Cascais is a dynamic blend of old and new. Cobblestone streets and historic buildings sit alongside modern art centres, luxury hotels, and chic boutiques. Institutions like the Paula Rego House of Stories and the Cascais Cultural Centre highlight the town’s commitment to the arts, while festivals such as the Cascais Music Festival and the Lumina light show celebrate both local and international talent.
For me, there are places that capture the heart once—and others that call you back time after time. Cascais is undoubtedly one of the latter. Nestled along the sun-drenched Portuguese Riviera, this seaside town offers more than just picturesque views and pleasant weather; it offers an atmosphere, a feeling, a rhythm that lingers long after you’ve left.
Perhaps it begins with the beauty. The Atlantic Ocean sparkles against golden beaches like Praia da Rainha or Praia do Guincho, where the sound of waves and salty breeze instantly soothe the soul. The dramatic coastal scenery of Boca do Inferno and the gentle charm of the palm-lined promenade never fail to mesmerise. Even the daily light in Cascais seems special—golden in the morning, rosy at dusk— casting everything in a warm, cinematic glow.

But there’s more than just scenery. Cascais is where history whispers from every corner. Strolling the cobbled streets, past 19th-century mansions and ancient fortresses, you can sense the town’s royal past and aristocratic elegance.
Each visit reveals another layer, a quiet chapel tucked away in a side street, a new gallery exhibiting Portuguese art, or a fresh take on a traditional dish at a tucked-away local restaurant.

Then there’s the pace of life. Cascais manages to strike a rare balance: it’s lively without being chaotic, sophisticated without being pretentious. Mornings can be spent sipping coffee by the harbour as fishing boats return with their catch.
Afternoons invite leisurely bike rides along the scenic coastal paths to Estoril, or simply relaxing on the beach with a good book. Evenings offer fine dining, sunset cocktails, or live music in a leafy square.

People, too, play their part. Friendly, welcoming, and deeply proud of their town, the locals lend an authentic charm to every experience. There’s a sense of familiarity and belonging that grows stronger with each visit—Cascais becomes less of a destination and more of a retreat, a second home.
Above all, Cascais is a place that never feels finished. It has its traditions, but it’s always evolving. Each return visit brings new discoveries and deeper connections. Whether it’s the art, the food, the sea, or simply the feeling of peace it evokes, Cascais has a way of drawing you back. Time after time, it feels like exactly where you’re meant to be.
Portuguese Baked Bream with Roasted New Potatoes and a Fresh Salad
This recipe offers a delicious twist on the classic Portuguese Baked Bream (Dourada Assada), incorporating white wine for an aromatic depth that elevates the dish. Perfect for a special dinner or a weekend treat, the tender, oven-baked sea bream is infused with garlic, herbs, and citrus, then roasted alongside golden new potatoes. To complete the meal, it’s served with a crisp, fresh salad that balances the richness of the fish. With its simple preparation and bold flavours, this dish brings a taste of coastal Portugal straight to your table.
Ingredients (serves 2)
1 whole sea bream (cleaned and scaled)
3 cloves garlic (sliced)
1 onion (sliced)
1 lemon (half sliced, half juiced)
150 ml dry white wine
Olive oil
Salt and black pepper
Fresh parsley
For the Roasted New Potatoes:
500g new potatoes (halved)
Olive oil
Salt, pepper, and rosemary or thyme
For the Salad:
Mixed greens
Cherry tomatoes (halved)
Cucumber (sliced)
Red onion (thinly sliced)
Olive oil, vinegar, salt
Method Fish:
Preheat oven to 200°C (390°F).
Season the fish inside and out with salt, pepper, garlic slices, and lemon juice. Stuff the cavity with lemon slices and some parsley.
Layer onion slices on a baking dish. Place the fish on top. Pour white wine and a generous drizzle of olive oil over the fish.
Roast fish for about 30 minutes, basting once or twice with pan juices.
Roasted Potatoes:
Toss new potatoes with olive oil, salt, pepper, and herbs.
Roast in a separate tray for about 35–40 minutes, shaking halfway through.
Salad:
Toss salad ingredients together. Dress with olive oil, vinegar, and a pinch of salt just before serving.
Wine
For Portuguese Baked Bream in white wine sauce, a crisp, dry white wine is the perfect match.
Here are a few excellent Portuguese wine pairing options:
Vinho Verde (e.g., Alvarinho or Loureiro)
Light, zesty, with a hint of effervescence.
Pairs beautifully with the citrus and herb notes in the dish.
Encruzado (from Dão region)
Structured and aromatic, with floral and mineral notes.
Great if you want a fuller-bodied white.
Arinto
Crisp acidity and citrus-driven, with a saline edge.
Enhances the fish and cuts through olive oil.

Budapest
Rooftops, River Views & a Touch of Grandeur
by Francesca Wharton, Cruise & Luxury Travel Specialist - CLIA Member
Following a recent River Cruise Conference, I decided to extend my stay in Budapest for a few extra days to explore this captivating city. As a travel consultant, there’s no better way to advise clients than by experiencing a destination first-hand, and Budapest more than lived up to expectations. A perfect blend of history, culture, grand architecture and modern vibrancy, the city offers something for everyone.
Day One
Golden Rails & Thermal Elegance
My Budapest adventure began in truly memorable style, with a private train journey courtesy of Golden Eagle Luxury Trains. Greeted with a glass of champagne and a red carpet welcome, I stepped aboard into a world of lavish comfort and first class service.

The elegant surroundings were immaculate, with polished wood, and gleaming tableware. We enjoyed a beautifully prepared brunch that felt like something out of a bygone era of glamour, a very special treat.
Later that afternoon, a friend flew out to join me, and we headed straight for one of Budapest’s most iconic experiences: the Széchenyi Thermal Baths. The stunning neo-baroque complex is one of the largest spas in Europe. With over 80 geothermal
springs, it’s no surprise that Budapest is affectionately known as the ‘City of Spas’.
To round off the day, we visited the legendary New York Café, frequently described as the most beautiful café in the world. The moment we walked in, we were blown away by the sheer grandeur. Ornate ceilings, glittering chandeliers and elegant marble columns made it feel like we’d stepped into a palace (Genuinely, you need to see it for yourself!!).
Soaking up the jaw-dropping architecture, we treated ourselves to a delicious afternoon tea, whilst the string quartet played softly in the background.
Day Two
Exploring the Castle District and River Views
We spent the next day exploring the Castle District on the Buda side of the city. After crossing the iconic Chain Bridge, we wandered the cobbled streets, enjoyed an ice cream and visited Buda Castle. The views across the Danube to the beautiful Hungarian Parliament were utterly spectacular.
Later, we hopped on a local ferry along the river,
a wonderfully relaxed and scenic way to take in the city’s landmarks. Drifting past the Parliament building, one of the largest in the world, was a definite highlight. Seeing it from the water, lit up along the riverbank, was a truly magical experience.
Day Three
Rooftop Cocktails, Culture & Cathedral
On our final day, after exploring the many shops, we paid a visit to St. Stephen’s Basilica, a magnificent Baroque cathedral in the heart of the city. Its soaring dome and ornate interior were awe-inspiring, with amazing views from the rooftop of the city below.

For lunch, we tucked into a hearty bowl of traditional Hungarian goulash at a nearby restaurant. Rich,
warming and full of flavour, it was just what we needed.
That evening, we headed to the striking High Note SkyBar atop the Aria Hotel. With panoramic views across the city’s rooftops and spires, it was the perfect setting for a farewell cocktail. As the sun set over the Danube, we planned to return in the autumn.

The heart of Budapest along the Danube is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rich in classical architecture and cultural landmarks, it’s no wonder the city welcomes over 12 million visitors a year.

If you’re thinking about a city break or a river cruise, Budapest has it all: history, elegance, and a lovely laid-back charm. If you’d like help planning your own trip, I’d be delighted to assist.
Make Your Money Work for Your Goals
by Andrew Hollins, Economist
Whether you’re running a household or a business, the principles of sound financial management remain remarkably similar. At the heart of it lies the need to understand income, control spending, plan for the future, and stay prepared for the unexpected. Budgeting is not just about cutting back—it’s about knowing where your money goes and ensuring it works for you. Here’s what every business owner and family should know.

1 Know Your Income
The first step in any budget is knowing exactly how much money is coming in. For families, this typically means salaries, benefits, pensions, or any passive income such as rental returns or dividends. For business owners, income might be more variable, revenue from sales, contracts, or services.
In either case, it’s crucial to work with your net income (what you receive after taxes), not your gross. Overestimating income is a common mistake that can lead to overspending.
2 Track Your Spending
Once income is clear, the next step is to track your expenses. For at least one month, write down every single expenditure. This applies to both households and businesses. Use bank statements, receipts, apps, or accounting software.
Break your spending into categories:
Fixed expenses: Rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, debt repayments.
Variable expenses: Food, entertainment, travel, marketing, inventory.
Irregular expenses: Annual subscriptions, holidays, maintenance.
Tracking provides clarity on where your money actually goes, not just where you think it does.

3 Create a Realistic Budget
Budgeting means creating a plan that matches your income to your expenses, with room for saving and investing. A realistic budget is one you can stick to, avoid overly optimistic or restrictive plans. Review and adjust regularly.
For families: This could mean setting monthly limits on groceries, transport, and leisure, while setting aside money for future goals (holidays, education, home improvements).
For businesses: This involves projecting cash flow, allocating money to operations, staff, taxes, and growth activities. Always include a buffer for unexpected costs or seasonal fluctuations.

4 Build an Emergency Fund
One of the most important aspects of financial stability is having a safety net. Keep emergency funds separate from regular accounts and only dip into them when absolutely necessary.
For families: Experts often recommend an emergency fund of 3 to 6 months’ worth of living expenses. This provides protection against job loss, health issues, or major home repairs.
For business owners: A reserve fund can help you weather slow sales periods, equipment failure, or unpaid invoices. It also provides confidence to take calculated risks when opportunities arise.

Goals

Debt is not inherently bad, but it must be managed responsibly. Families should aim to minimise high-interest debt (like credit cards) and focus on paying off loans that don’t contribute to long-term wealth. Mortgage debt may be necessary, but it should be affordable in the long run.
Businesses often rely on loans or credit lines for start-up costs, inventory, or expansion. The key is to ensure any borrowed money is used productively— generating more income than the cost of the debt. Always know the terms of your debts: interest rates, payment schedules, and penalties. Prioritise paying off high-interest obligations first.

Without goals, budgeting can feel restrictive and aimless. Setting clear, measurable goals gives you purpose.
For families: Goals might include saving for a child’s education, buying a home, going on holiday, or retiring early. Assign amounts and timeframes to these goals.
For business owners: Goals may include hitting revenue targets, expanding your team, investing in equipment, or launching a new product. Break larger goals into smaller, manageable milestones. Review progress regularly and celebrate small wins to stay motivated.
7 Set Financial Goals
This point is crucial for sole traders or small business owners. Mixing personal and business finances leads to confusion, missed deductions, and poor financial visibility. Set up separate bank accounts and accounting systems for your business.

Pay yourself a fixed salary if possible, and avoid dipping into business funds for personal use unless planned and recorded. This separation makes tax time simpler, improves budgeting accuracy, and gives a clearer picture of how the business is performing.
8 Review Regularly and Adjust as Needed
Life and business are constantly changing. What worked six months ago may no longer suit your circumstances. That’s why regular budget reviews are essential. Set a monthly reminder to assess your budget: what went well, what didn’t, and what adjustments need to be made.
Look for patterns and opportunities to cut waste or boost income. Annual reviews are a good time to check progress on long-term goals, renew insurance policies, and assess the need for major financial decisions.
9 Invest in Financial Education
Understanding money isn’t something we’re all taught—but it’s never too late to learn. Make it a priority to improve your financial literacy.
Read reputable finance books, attend workshops, follow trusted experts, or even speak with a financial adviser. For business owners, understanding key financial statements (like profit and loss, balance sheets, and cash flow) is invaluable.
The more you understand, the more confident and in control you’ll feel—whether managing your household or steering your business.

Budgeting isn’t about depriving yourself; it’s about making your money work for your goals. Whether you’re managing a family household or running a business, the principles are universal: spend less than you earn, plan ahead, and make informed decisions.
With discipline, knowledge, and regular review, both families and businesses can achieve greater stability, resilience, and financial peace of mind.

Employers Liable for Worker Conduct
by Jim Moore, HR and Employment Law Expert
Did you know that, as an employer, you can be held responsible for how your employees behave, even outside the workplace?
Employers are expected to take all necessary ‘reasonable steps’ to ensure that their workers are not harassed. This means that, if harassment does occur, an employer may need to demonstrate that they did everything reasonably within their power to prevent it from happening. We call this ‘vicarious liability’, and must be taken very seriously.
What is Harassment?
Under the Equality Act 2010, harassment is defined as “unwanted conduct related to a relevant protected characteristic, which has the purpose or effect of violating an individual’s dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for that individual.”
A form of bullying on the basis of race, sex, age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy or maternity, marriage or civil partnership, sexual orientation, religion or philosophical belief.

Jim Moore, Managing Partner of HNIS, has worked with large corporate clients and local SMEs specialising as a workplace investigator

Sexual harassment, however, is unwanted conduct of sexual nature, which can include both physical and non-physical behaviour; unwelcome advances, flirting, touching, leering, inappropriately intimate gifts, etc.
Employers also have a duty to protect staff from sexual harassment by third parties, e.g. customers and visitors to your premises. There are also proposals to extend this to all forms of harassment, and to introduce protection against bullying generally.

How Accountants Help Small Businesses Plan for the Future
by Mel Curtis, of Melanie Curtis Accountants

Running a small business is incredibly rewarding—but let’s be honest, it can also be pretty stressful. One minute you’re focused on winning work, the next you’re chasing invoices, managing team issues or trying to understand if you can afford to buy that new van. It’s no wonder so many business owners tell me they feel like they’re “winging it” when it comes to the finances. That’s where a good accountant makes all the difference.
At Melanie Curtis Accountants, we don’t just tick boxes at year-end. We work side-by-side with our clients throughout the year, helping them make better financial decisions with confidence. One of the ways we do this is through budgeting and forecasting, and no, it’s not just for big corporations!
Why budgeting matters
A budget is essentially a roadmap for your money. It shows what’s coming in, what’s going out, and whether there’s enough left to do the things you want to do, whether that’s hiring someone new, upgrading equipment, or simply taking a proper holiday.
We help our clients create clear, practical budgets that give them control. No more nasty surprises when the VAT bill lands or the rent goes up.
The power of forecasting
Forecasting takes things a step further. It helps you look ahead and plan for what might be coming— whether that’s seasonal dips in income, rising costs, or exciting growth opportunities.
We use real data from your business to create tailored
forecasts. It’s like giving your business a financial crystal ball—and it’s one of the most empowering tools a business owner can have.
It’s not about spreadsheets, it’s about peace of mind.
One of the most common things I hear from clients is, “I wish I’d done this sooner.” Having regular visibility over your numbers changes everything. It gives you clarity, confidence and ultimately more freedom.
At the end of the day, we all want to enjoy our businesses more and stress about them less. That starts with understanding the numbers—and having the right support to make them work for you.

A Wild Day Out
Meet the Majestic Residents of Gauntlet Birds of Prey
by Jacqui Priestley, accompanied by Abrianna

Gauntlet Birds of Prey in Knutsford - Where a trip to the park is a noisy, thrilling affair where you’ll rub shoulders (sometimes literally) with their much loved feathered family. When you enter the park, you will be instantly transported around the world with birds from every continent; well, except Antarctica!
Meet Owls, Eagles, Vultures, Falcons, Hawks and more unusual species like the Marabou Stork or Red-legged Seriema. Spend the day, enjoying their magnificent flying demonstrations, vulture talk and the meet and greet session. Whether you’re young, old or just crazy about wildlife, as we are! At Gauntlet Birds of Prey, there’s something for everyone!
Established in 1996, the park is home to over 180 birds from 50 different species – it’s the largest collection in the North West of England. It is also one of only a handful of birds of prey parks in the UK to be a member of BIAZA (The British & Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums).

Their main goal is to raise awareness of birds of prey, how they live, hunt and feed. At Gauntlet, you will meet a wide range of birds from Eagles,
Hawks and Falcons, to Vultures, Kites and Owls. The park is also home to more unusual species like Caracaras, Seriemas, Storks and Pelicans. We inform visitors of the plight of some of the species here at the park through our Flying Demonstrations (where you get to see and hear all about the birds), the ‘Vulture Restaurant Talk’ and ‘Meet and Greet’ sessions.

The Gauntlet team say: “Conservation and education is extremely important to us, it’s why we started the park in the first place. Since we opened our doors we have educated 1000s of children on the importance of these birds, their habitats and conservation.
We do this through educational presentations to schools visiting the park, and also through the work of our educational team. The team visit schools and youth groups across Cheshire and Manchester, taking some of Gauntlet’s residents with them. Throughout the year Gauntlet also works hard to raise funds for its charity partner ‘Gauntlet Conservation Trust’ which supports conservation projects in the UK and abroad.”
Let’s meet the birds - here are the Eagles. There are around 60 species of eagle on the planet. Most of them can be found in Africa, Europe and Asia. Only 14 species can be found elsewhere, two in North America, nine in Central and South America and three in Australia. Gauntlet Birds of Prey is home to nine species of eagles, from the Bald Eagle of North America to the African Tawny Eagle from sub-Saharan Africa and India. Our eagles all have their own individual personalities and keep us entertained with their funny ways.

↑ Bald Eagle
↑ White-Tailed Sea Eagle
↑ African Fish Eagle

↑ Black-Chested Buzzard Eagle

Here are the Owls - Across the world there are over 200 different species of owls, from the tiny Pygmy Owl to the statuesque European Eagle Owl. They are generally considered to be nocturnal hunters, however they are actually quite capable diurnal hunters, with some species even preferring to hunt during the day. Gauntlet is home to 13 different species of Owl, plus a very special hybrid owl (a cross between a Malaysian Wood Owl and a Great Grey Owl). These silent hunters can be seen during daily demonstrations.

In the next issue we meet the vultures, falcons and kites of Gauntlet, and in the meantime have a look at their website: gauntletbirdsofprey.co.uk

Thinking of Caring for Something a Little Different?
by Jacqui Priestley
Exotic pets are capturing the imaginations of animal lovers across the UK, offering a glimpse into the wild from the comfort of our homes. Whether it’s the vibrant feathers of a parrot, the graceful movements of a gecko, or the curious eyes of a sugar glider, these animals offer a unique and enriching experience unlike any other. But while they are undeniably captivating, exotic pets also come with a set of responsibilities that make their care both challenging and deeply rewarding.

The term ‘exotic pet’ typically refers to animals not traditionally domesticated in the UK—such as reptiles, amphibians, birds like macaws or cockatoos, and even small mammals like fennec foxes or kinkajous. What they all have in common is their ability to bring something extraordinary into our daily lives.

Caring for an exotic pet means going beyond the basics. Many of these animals require specific environmental conditions that mimic their natural habitats. Reptiles, for example, need carefully controlled lighting, temperature, and humidity to stay healthy.
Fortunately, with advances in pet care technology, it’s easier than ever to create custom enclosures that support their well-being. Many owners take pride in designing habitats that are not only functional but also beautiful and enriching for the animal.
Feeding exotic pets can also be a fascinating process. Each species has its own unique dietary requirements, which can open the door to learning about nutrition and wildlife behaviour. Whether you’re preparing a nutrient-rich salad for a tortoise or offering live insects to a tree frog, feeding becomes more than a routine—it becomes a window into the

VETERINARY CENTRE
Kelperland Vets is a family owned and run vet practice that has been in the Windsor and Maidenhead area since the 1950s. Simon and Camilla have owned the practice since 2014 and it has grown steadily whilst staying true to their community and traditional values.

Now offering SURGICAL & DERMATOLOGY referrals to clients from other practices

Another highlight of owning exotic pets is the strong bond that can form through understanding and interaction. Parrots, for instance, are incredibly intelligent and social, and with patience and attention, they can develop rich personalities and even learn to talk or mimic sounds.
Many exotic animals respond well to routine and gentle handling, and seeing them thrive under your care is incredibly fulfilling.
While exotic pets do require access to specialist veterinary care, the community of exotic pet owners and professionals in the UK is growing. Forums, local clubs, and social media groups provide a wealth of knowledge, and more veterinary practices now offer exotic animal services. With some research and networking, owners can find reliable support to keep their pets in top condition.
↓ Bright, beautiful, and full of personality, parrots can make wonderful companions, but they need proper care, attention, and a lot of love to thrive

↑ Quiet and fascinating, turtles can be rewarding pets, but they require the right environment, a balanced diet, and long-term commitment to keep them healthy and happy
Education is key to responsible exotic pet ownership, and for those willing to put in the effort, the rewards are plentiful. The journey is filled with opportunities to learn—not just about your pet, but about broader topics like conservation, biodiversity, and global ecosystems. Many owners find themselves becoming ambassadors for their species, sharing what they’ve learned and helping to raise awareness about ethical pet keeping and wildlife protection.
Keeping an exotic pet isn’t just a hobby—it’s a lifestyle that invites curiosity, compassion, and lifelong learning. While these animals may not suit everyone, for the right person they offer a deeply meaningful connection to nature and the wild.
So, if you’re drawn to the idea of caring for something a little different, take the time to do your research, speak to specialists, and consider visiting a rescue or sanctuary. With the right preparation, owning an exotic pet can be one of the most enriching experiences an animal lover can have.

Staying Sharp
by Jacqui Priestley
As we age, maintaining mental sharpness becomes just as important as looking after our physical health. For those living alone, staying mentally active can also help combat loneliness and boost overall well-being. Fortunately, there are many practical and enjoyable ways to keep your mind engaged, stimulated, and agile well into later life. Here are some tips to help you stay mentally fit while enjoying the independence of living solo.

Keep Learning
The brain thrives on new information. Learning something new—whether it’s a skill, a language, or a hobby—challenges the mind and keeps neural pathways strong. Consider joining an online course, reading up on a subject you’ve always been curious about, or even learning to play a musical instrument.
Many local libraries and community centres offer free or low-cost classes, and online platforms like FutureLearn or the Open University make it easy to study from home.

Stay Socially Connected
While living alone might mean fewer day-to-day interactions, staying socially engaged is crucial for mental stimulation. Phone calls, video chats, or even letters to family and friends can go a long way. Try joining local clubs, book groups, or volunteering schemes to meet people with shared interests. If mobility is a challenge, virtual meet-ups and online forums can offer a sense of community.
Exercise Your Brain
Just like muscles, the brain benefits from regular workouts. Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, and brain-training apps can all help improve memory and problem-solving skills. Even traditional card games like bridge or solitaire, or newer online games, can offer a fun mental challenge. Aim to make brain games a regular part of your daily routine.
Read Widely and Often
Reading is one of the most effective ways to stimulate the mind. Whether it’s novels, newspapers, magazines or non-fiction, reading encourages focus, imagination, and learning.
Mix it up with different genres to challenge yourself and expand your perspective. Audiobooks are a great alternative if your eyesight is changing, and many are available for free through local libraries.
Create a Daily Routine
Having structure to your day helps maintain purpose and motivation. Plan time for meals, exercise, hobbies, and social connection.
Incorporating variety within the routine, such as trying a new recipe on Tuesdays or taking a walk in a different park on Fridays, keeps things interesting and mentally engaging.
Stay Physically Active
Physical activity doesn’t just benefit the body—it also supports brain health. Exercise boosts blood flow to the brain and can improve memory, concentration, and mood. Walking, swimming, yoga, or even gentle stretching at home can all contribute to better mental functioning. Try to move a little each day, and if you can, do it outdoors—nature has its own mental health benefits.

Try Creative Activities
Art, writing, music, and crafts are excellent ways to keep the brain active. Creative expression encourages problem-solving, fine motor skills, and emotional processing. Whether it’s knitting, painting, writing poetry, or gardening, creative hobbies can bring a sense of fulfilment and mental stimulation.
Keep a Journal
Writing regularly in a journal helps process emotions, reflect on experiences, and sharpen memory. You don’t have to write long essays—a few sentences about your day, thoughts, or things you’re grateful for can make a big difference. Journalling can also help create a sense of routine and mindfulness.
Eat for Brain Health
What you eat affects how your brain functions. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, healthy fats

(like those in olive oil and fish), and lean proteins can support memory and mental clarity. Staying hydrated is also essential. Herbal teas and water throughout the day can help keep your brain at its best.
Seek Support When Needed
Don’t hesitate to seek support for mental or emotional health. Feelings of isolation, anxiety, or depression can affect anyone, especially those living alone. Talking to a GP, counsellor, or joining a support group can make a significant difference. Taking care of your mental health is a vital part of staying mentally active.
Living alone as you age doesn’t mean facing mental decline—it can be a time of personal growth, exploration, and joy. By engaging your brain, staying connected, and embracing new experiences, you can keep your mind sharp and your spirits high. It’s never too late to try something new, and your mind will thank you for it.

Let Your Food do the Thinking
by Samantha Priestley
Can the right foods actually make me sharper, more focused, even more creative? The short answer: yes. What we feed our bodies has a direct impact on our brains, and the good news is, boosting brain power doesn’t require bland salads or expensive supplements. In fact, some of the best brain foods are things you probably already love. From juicy blueberries to rich dark chocolate, I’ve rounded up ten delicious options that not only taste amazing but also help fuel mental clarity, memory, and mood.
1 Fatty Fish – The Brain’s Best Friend
Salmon, sardines, mackerel – oily fish are swimming in omega-3s, the good fats that keep your brain cells happy and your memory sharp. Think of them as brain food royalty. Grilled salmon for dinner? Your brain says yes, please.
2 Blueberries – Tiny but Mighty
These little berries pack a serious punch. Full of antioxidants, blueberries help protect your brain from ageing and may even boost memory. They’re basically nature’s sweet, juicy brain shield.
3 Broccoli – Little Trees of Brain Power
Okay, maybe not everyone’s favourite veg, but broccoli is bursting with antioxidants and vitamin K – both great for keeping your mind in top shape. Roast it with a little olive oil, and suddenly it’s a snack your brain (and tastebuds) will thank you for.
4 Pumpkin Seeds – Small but Super
Don’t underestimate these crunchy little gems. They’re full of magnesium, iron, zinc and copper –a dream team of minerals your brain needs to stay alert, balanced, and fog-free. Perfect sprinkled over yoghurt or salads.

5 Dark Chocolate – Sweet and Smart
Yes, chocolate made the list! Just stick to the dark kind (70% cocoa or more). It’s full of flavonoids and a bit of caffeine – a combo that can lift your mood and help you concentrate. Who knew being brainy could taste so good?
6 Walnuts – Brain-Shaped for a Reason
Nature’s hint is in the shape – walnuts actually look like mini brains, and they’re fantastic for yours. Packed with healthy fats and vitamin E, they’re linked to better memory and slower mental decline. Handy as a snack or mixed into porridge.
7 Eggs – Breakfast for the Brain
Eggs are a cracking source of choline – a nutrient that helps make acetylcholine, a chemical your brain uses for memory and mood. Plus, they’re full of B vitamins, which keep your brain ticking nicely. Scrambled, poached or boiled – take your pick.

8 Oranges – Zesty Brain Fuel
One orange a day gives you all the vitamin C you need. This immune-boosting vitamin also helps protect your brain against age-related damage. Plus, they’re juicy, refreshing, and super easy to snack on.

9 Green Tea – Sip Your Way to Smarter
Green tea offers a double whammy: caffeine to wake you up, and L-theanine to help you stay calm and focused. Add in some brain-protecting antioxidants, and you’ve got a perfect pick-me-up for busy minds.
10 Turmeric – Golden Spice, Golden Brain
This vibrant yellow spice doesn’t just add colour to curry – it’s loaded with curcumin, which can cross into the brain and reduce inflammation. It may even help lift your mood and support memory. Try it in tea or smoothies for a warm, spicy kick.
Feeding your brain doesn’t mean living off kale and supplements. A colourful, tasty diet can do wonders for your focus, memory and mood. So go ahead, snack smart, sip wisely, and let your food do the thinking.
Let the Sunshine In
by Jojo Cooke Fun
Ways to Fill Your Home With Fresh Air and Light
Who doesn’t love that golden afternoon glow dancing across the walls, or the crisp scent of morning air breezing through the curtains? Our homes are our sanctuaries, and let’s be honest—nobody’s thriving in a dark, stuffy cave. Bringing more fresh air and natural light into your space doesn’t have to mean a full-blown renovation. In fact, it can be as delightful as throwing open a window and twirling in the breeze like you’re in a shampoo commercial. Here’s your not-so-serious (but totally effective) guide to making your home a sun-kissed, air-filled haven.
Become BFFs With Your Windows
Step one: open the windows! Yes, even the ones you haven’t touched since 2019. Let the outside in, and give your home a good gust of Mother Nature’s finest. Cross-ventilation is your new secret weapon— crack open windows on opposite sides of the house and let the air do its thing.
Bonus points: add a cute wind chime or sheer curtain that flutters dramatically when the breeze rolls in. It’s about vibes.

Lighten Up—Literally
Dark curtains? Heavy blinds? Let them go and swap them for something breezy and bright. Linen, voile, or even no window coverings at all (depending on how cosy you are with the neighbours).
No sunlight streaming in? Cheat a little. Hang a big mirror opposite the window and watch the light bounce like it’s having a disco party. Shiny surfaces, pale walls, and glass accessories all help keep the energy light and luminous.

Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall (and Maybe the Shelf and Table Too)
Mirrors are basically sunlight’s besties. They reflect, amplify, and make even the gloomiest corners feel like they’re in a Nancy Meyers movie. Round, rectangular, vintage, modern—whatever your style, mirrors are a no-brainer.
And don’t stop there—shiny metallics, glass vases, and glossy tiles can all boost the brightness without lifting a hammer.
Adopt
a Plant or Two (or Ten)
Plants are the unicorns of interior design. They clean your air, lift your spirits, and make any room feel like a jungle-chic paradise. Go for low-maintenance
superstars like pothos, snake plants, or a peace lily that says, “I’m thriving, darling.”
Group them in corners, dangle them from the ceiling, or plop one on every available surface. Bonus: they make your air fresher and your Instagram feed prettier.

Declutter Like You’re on a Reality Show
Imagine a fresh breeze trying to weave its way through towers of laundry, piles of unopened mail, and last week’s mystery-smelling gym bag. Doesn’t work, right?
Decluttering doesn’t have to mean minimalism (unless that’s your thing). Just give your home space to breathe—literally. Clear the window sills, free the floor, and donate anything you haven’t used since dial-up internet was a thing.

Style Your Way to a Breeze
No AC? No problem. Get strategic. Place a fan by the window to pull in the outdoor air, or position two fans across the room to create your own DIY wind tunnel. It’s like a wind spa, but cheaper.
And if you’re feeling extra, invest in a portable air purifier with a fancy light feature. Clean air and ambient mood lighting? We love a multitasker.

Skylights and Sun Tunnels: Fancy But Fabulous
Okay, we’re getting a little luxe now—but if you’re renovating or dreaming big, skylights and sun tunnels are the ultimate light-bringers. They turn boring ceilings into sunshine highways and give even windowless bathrooms that “I’m bathing in golden light” feeling.
It’s a splurge, sure, but it’s also instant drama. And who doesn’t love drama—in the ceiling, at least?
Bring the Outside In (and Vice Versa)
Open up your space by blending indoors with outdoors. Throw open those French doors, roll out a rug onto the patio, or line your windows with herb boxes that smell amazing every time you crack one open.
Got a balcony? Turn it into a mini garden lounge. Even a tiny space can be an urban oasis with a folding chair, a plant, and maybe a cold drink (or two).
The Final Breeze
At the end of the day, filling your home with fresh air and natural light is less about grand gestures and more about daily rituals. Open those windows. Let the sunshine in. Toss those heavy curtains. Add a plant. Or seven.
Make it fun, make it yours—and remember, nothing says “I have my life together” quite like a light-filled, airy space with a thriving fiddle-leaf fig in the corner.
Bournemouth
Is it Still Riding the Cool Wave in 2025?
by Jessie Bowles

Once the sleepy stomping ground of pensioners and postcard holidays, Bournemouth has pulled off one of the most unexpected glow-ups in recent memory. The question is—has it still got the edge in 2025, or is it slipping back into seaside snooze territory?
Seaside Chic, Not Shabby
Forget faded deckchairs and soggy chips— Bournemouth is buzzing. Southbourne, now dubbed the “Notting Hill of the South Coast,” has become a magnet for London escapees and digital nomads craving sea air with a side of artisan coffee.
Meanwhile, Boscombe—once written off as a bit rough around the edges—is in the throes of a proper renaissance, with indie shops, street art, and community markets giving the place a grittycool vibe. Even Pokesdown’s getting in on the action, with vintage shops and boho cafés cropping up like mushrooms after a rainstorm.

Culture with a Kick
The town’s not just riding on aesthetics, either. Bournemouth’s events calendar is stacked—from the jaw-dropping Air Festival to the unapologetically loud and proud Bourne Free Pride. And when it comes to nightlife, the town’s no slouch.
Clubs and bars are buzzing year-round, and live music’s making a strong comeback in venues that once felt forgotten. It’s not Camden, sure—but it’s trying, and people are noticing.
The Silicon Beach Effect
Behind the scenes, Bournemouth’s digital and creative economy is quietly flexing. Dubbed “Silicon Beach,” the town’s become a surprising tech hotspot.
Start-ups are sprouting, fuelled by a stream of talent from Bournemouth Uni and beyond. That means more co-working hubs, more sustainable businesses, and more people under 40 actually considering staying put after graduation. Who’d have thought?
Green and Growing
And let’s not forget the town’s serious green credentials. Bournemouth’s been rated one of the greenest urban areas in the UK, and it shows. From leafy parks to beach cleans and rewilding schemes, there’s a definite eco-conscious pulse. Whether it’s performative or genuine is up for debate—but it looks good, and that counts for something.

Still Trendy, or Trying Too Hard?
So, is Bournemouth still trendy in 2025? In a word— yes. It’s found a sweet spot between beach town chill and urban ambition. But it’s also teetering on the edge: overdevelopment and rising house prices threaten to turn it into another gentrified ghost town.
Still, for now, Bournemouth’s riding high. Cool, confident, and just a little bit chaotic—exactly how we like our coastal towns.

How to Rewild a Garden
Turn your Outdoor Space into a Sanctuary for Nature
Rewilding isn’t just for sprawling country estates or neglected woodlands – your own back garden, no matter how big or small, can play a crucial role in restoring nature. With pollinators in decline, native species under pressure, and climate extremes becoming more frequent, rewilding your garden is not only a beautiful way to connect with the wild, it’s a practical step towards ecological recovery.
Let Nature Take the Lead
At its heart, rewilding is about giving nature space to do what it does best – thrive. That means resisting the urge to control every inch. Start by designating a portion of your garden to go a little wild. Leave the lawn unmown in patches to allow grasses and wildflowers to bloom. You might be surprised at what appears: clover, daisies, self-heal and even orchids can emerge when the mower’s silenced.
Even small changes make a difference. Dandelions, often dismissed as weeds, are a crucial early food source for bees.

Plant Native
One of the most effective ways to support local wildlife is to plant species that naturally grow in your area. Native wildflowers such as foxgloves, knapweed, cowslips and bird’s-foot trefoil attract a host of butterflies, bees and beetles. Hedgerow species like hawthorn, dog rose, blackthorn and elder can provide food and shelter for birds and mammals.
Avoid overly bred cultivars that may look striking but offer little in terms of nectar or habitat. The more ‘natural’ your planting scheme, the more beneficial it will be.

Build a Habitat Mosaic
Diversity is key to successful rewilding. Try to include a mix of features – long grass, flowering plants, hedges, shrubs, and a bit of bare ground for insects to burrow. A woodpile in a shady corner becomes a haven for beetles and fungi. If you can, dig a small pond – even a buried washing-up bowl will attract frogs, dragonflies, and birds looking to bathe.
Leave gaps under fences, so hedgehogs can travel between gardens. They can roam over a mile a night, and your patch could be a vital link in their journey.
Ditch the Chemicals
Pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers can do real harm to the very creatures you’re trying to support.
Embrace imperfections: nibbled leaves mean caterpillars, which mean butterflies and food for birds. Compost your kitchen and garden waste instead of using synthetic fertilisers – healthy soil teeming with worms, fungi and microbes is the bedrock of a thriving ecosystem.
Be Patient – and Observant
Rewilding is a process, not a makeover. It might look a bit untidy at times, but that’s nature at work. You’ll learn to appreciate the quiet hum of life that builds with time – from the return of bees and butterflies to birdsong you haven’t heard in years.
Keep a journal or take photos through the seasons. Not only will you notice changes, but you’ll also find a deeper sense of connection with the natural world around you.
Join the Movement
Rewilding is more than a trend – it’s part of a larger movement to restore biodiversity and rebalance our relationship with nature. In the UK, initiatives like the RHS Wild About Gardens and Rewilding Britain offer guidance and support. Some councils even provide wildflower seeds or advice for naturefriendly gardening.
By rewilding your garden, you’re becoming part of a much-needed shift towards sustainability. You don’t need acres – just a little willingness to let things grow.

Rewilding isn’t about doing nothing – it’s about doing less, but with more thought. With just a few simple changes, you can turn your garden into a haven, not only for wildlife, but for your own wellbeing too.
