The Brothers Who Lost Everything
The Hidden Dangers of DIY Wills
Mark and David were lifelong brothers, best friends as well as family. They worked hard and bought their dream home for £600,000. But for reasons lost in time, the house was registered in Mark’s name alone. They trusted each other completely, and when it came to writing wills, they did what many people still do — they downloaded a template and did it themselves. Their wishes were simple: if one died, everything should go to the other.
As a back-up, they named a reserve beneficiary, an old university friend they hadn’t seen in 25 years. To keep it simple, they signed the wills and witnessed each other’s signatures, not realising they had made a fatal error.
When Mark died suddenly, David was devastated — but at least he believed he could stay in their home. But then came the shock: because David had acted as a witness on Mark’s will, he was legally barred from inheriting under it. Under the Wills Act, witnesses cannot benefit.
That meant the will defaulted to the reserve beneficiary: the long-forgotten university friend, who now inherited the entire estate. David begged him to share it, but there was no obligation — legally, it was all his. David lost his home and the inheritance
he had helped build, with no legal recourse.
At Peaceful Heritage Wills & Trusts, we’ve seen too many stories like David’s, only coming to light when it’s too late. That’s why we believe in a professional, caring, and affordable approach to getting these critical documents right. If you or someone you care about has a will written without proper advice, or hasn’t reviewed it in years, now is the time. A simple, no-obligation discussion can give you peace of mind that everything is truly in order.

Let the Fun Bloom!
by Graham, the Golden Triangle Gardener
When the sun graces Cheshire’s Golden Triangle with its golden glow, there’s no better place to be than your own back garden – Pimms in hand, bees buzzing, and blooms bursting with colour. Whether you’ve got a sprawling countryside plot or a bijou town garden, summer is your time to shine. Here’s how to turn your outdoor space into the most fabulous spot in Cheshire!
Plan Your Garden Party Stage
Start with how you want to use your garden. Is it for lazy Sunday lounging, kids’ playtime, or cocktail o’clock with friends? Think zones: a sunny corner for loungers, a shady nook for a bench, a patch for herbs or veg (because nothing says “summer in Cheshire” like fresh mint for your mojito).
Bring in the Buzz
The best gardens are alive with sound and movement. Plant pollinator-friendly flowers and let nature do its thing. Bees love borage and butterflies go mad for buddleia. A small wildlife pond or even a birdbath adds instant charm (and makes you feel like you’re on Springwatch).
Add Colour with Confidence
Summer is not the time to be shy – go bold with bright geraniums, dahlias, petunias and sunflowers. Layer your plants for maximum impact: think tall foxgloves at the back, bushy lavender in the middle, and trailing lobelia at the front. Pop them in borders, pots, hanging baskets – anywhere that needs a bit of va-va-voom!
Fun and Furniture
Deck out your garden with seating that makes people want to linger. Cushions in bright prints, a parasol with fringe, fairy lights strung from tree to tree – go full garden party chic. Upcycle an old pallet into a drinks station or paint a fence in a bold colour to add cheer.
A Touch of Cheshire Quirk
This is the time to show your personality. Gnome in sunglasses? Go for it. Flamingo in a flower bed? Why not! Add mirrors to reflect the greenery and garden signs with cheeky sayings – it’s your space, so make it smile.
Keep It Glorious
A little upkeep goes a long way. Deadhead flowers to keep them blooming, water pots daily in hot weather, and keep the lawn neat (even if you’re mowing in flip-flops). Mulch borders with bark or compost to lock in moisture and cut down on weeding – nobody wants to spend summer bent over a trowel!
So go on – pour a drink, kick off your shoes, and enjoy every sunny, flower-filled, joy-packed moment. Your Golden Triangle garden is your summer stage. Make it fun, fabulous and uniquely yours.
Mochi
Gentle Yet Rich
Here’s a delightful visual snapshot of Little Greene’s “Mochi™ (No. 344)”, their Colour of the Year 2025—a warm, creamy, coffee-cake-inspired neutral with soft peachy-pink undertones. It’s elegant, versatile and rather more interesting than plain beige.
What’s the Yarn on Mochi?
Little Greene has crowned Mochi™ as its Colour of the Year for 2025. It’s been inspired by the 18th-century neoclassical decor of Calke Abbey’s dining room—a soothing shade designed to bridge heritage charm and contemporary calm.
Mochi isn’t just another neutral—think “quiet luxury”
Pairing Suggestions: It Plays Well With Others
Little Greene specifically recommends pairing Mochi with richer tones like their darker brown Scullery on skirting and doors, and a crisp white like Shirting on ceilings for fresh contrast.
For a more organic, earthy mood, blushy greens and cool greys bring out its grounded side, or go bold with darker chocolate browns to elevate the drama.
in a paint tin. It’s cosy and cocooning, perfect for creating a warm hug of a room without tipping into saccharine taupe territory.
↓ Red Ochre
↓ China Clay
↓ Juniper
Where to Use It?
Think of Mochi as your go-to for spaces where warmth meets calm:
Bedrooms & Living Rooms
It cocoons you gently, without overwhelming senses.
Home Offices & Studies
It’s plaster-like and focused, offering calm concentration that still feels inviting.
Kitchens
Drenched kitchen walls, woodwork, and tiles in Mochi bring an inviting, homely quality—pair with deeper cabinet tones for depth..
Tone & Style, With a Dash of Humour
It’s not beige. It’s not brown. It’s Mochi—revealing peachpink glamour in daylight and cosy caramel depths by lamplight. It walks the tightrope between neutral and notable, whispering inclusivity rather than shouting. Perfect for those who love their décor just a tad mysterious and a bit mischievous—like that friend who appears mild-mannered but dresses in statement socks.
So… In a world overrun by clashing muted neutrals, Mochi stands tall—calm yet characterful, gentle yet rich. Whether you’re after a restful sanctuary or a modern-classic scheme, it’s versatile enough to dress up or tone down.

The Future is Warm and Wise
by Jacqui Priestley
Summer is the perfect time to take a look at the art of smart living, with home automation, underfloor heating and intelligent boilers. In a world increasingly governed by technology, the concept of “home” has evolved from a place of shelter to a finely tuned symphony of convenience, efficiency and comfort.
Home automation, once the realm of science fiction and the fortunate few, is now making its way into elegant townhouses, countryside retreats, and contemporary family homes across Cheshire’s Golden Triangle. This quiet revolution is redefining how we interact with our living spaces—turning on lights with a whisper, warming a room before we even step through the door, and keeping our homes secure with discreet precision. At the heart of this smart evolution are two essential elements: underfloor heating and intelligent boiler systems.
The Rise of the Smart Home
Home automation, in its essence, is about control. From lighting and security to audio systems and appliances, smart homes are tailored to respond to our needs with the tap of a finger or the sound of a voice. The goal is not only to impress but to enhance our everyday lives—quietly, stylishly, and efficiently.
With sophisticated control systems such as Loxone, Control4, or Google Nest, homeowners can schedule routines, manage energy consumption, and even monitor their property remotely. Picture this: as you head home on a frosty evening, your house has already begun to prepare itself for your arrival. The hallway lights glow softly, the blinds adjust to the falling dusk, and the floors radiate warmth thanks to an automated underfloor heating system synced to your routine.
Subtle Luxury Beneath Your Feet
Underfloor heating is the unsung hero of the modern smart home—hidden from view but offering supreme comfort and energy efficiency. Unlike traditional radiators, which can be clunky and visually intrusive, underfloor systems distribute heat evenly and invisibly across a room. It’s a luxurious experience that feels natural and indulgent, particularly during colder months.
Smart controls take underfloor heating to another level. Systems can be programmed room by room, ensuring energy is only used where and when it’s needed. In the guest bathroom, the tiles are gently warm each morning. The kitchen floor cools down during the day but warms up in time for dinner preparation. Such intelligent heating not only enhances comfort but significantly reduces energy waste—an elegant solution in both form and function.
The Intelligent Boiler
Behind the scenes, a modern boiler system plays an equally crucial role in smart living. Today’s condensing boilers are marvels of efficiency, designed to work in harmony with underfloor heating, radiators, and hot water systems. When integrated with home automation, these boilers become even more intelligent.
Smart thermostats like Hive, Tado, and Nest allow you to fine-tune your home’s temperature from anywhere in the world. Forgot to turn the heating off before leaving for the weekend? No problem— simply adjust it from your phone. Heading back early from a winter break? Have your boiler prepare a welcoming warmth before you walk in.
Some systems even learn your patterns over time, anticipating when you’re likely to be home or away and adjusting accordingly. They monitor outdoor temperatures and modulate boiler activity to maintain comfort while maximising efficiency. This means lower bills, a reduced carbon footprint, and a home that always feels “just right.”
Aesthetic Meets Practicality
For the design-conscious homeowner, one of the key appeals of smart heating systems is their seamless integration. There are no bulky thermostats or cluttered panels—just discreet, often touchscreen controls, or apps on your smartphone. These interfaces can blend beautifully with your interior design, offering both form and function in perfect harmony.
Underfloor heating also frees up wall space, giving interior designers and homeowners alike more freedom to express style and elegance without being tethered to radiator positioning. Whether you’re creating a minimalist open-plan kitchen or a cosy reading nook, comfort need not compromise aesthetics.
As we lean further into sustainable, connected lifestyles, home automation will continue to evolve—bringing with it smarter, greener, and more responsive ways to live. What once seemed futuristic is now well within reach, and increasingly standard in new builds and renovations alike.
By investing in smart heating systems, underfloor solutions, and automated boilers, we’re not only elevating our comfort—we’re also embracing a lifestyle that is energy-efficient, environmentally aware, and quietly luxurious.
In this era of elegance and intelligence, home is no longer just where the heart is—it’s where the smart is.
Jacqui Priestley spends five minutes with Pete Marshall, technical consultant for IT and Communications company Lumic, about business tech, cyber threats, and keeping all businesses connected
Pete, who exactly is Lumic, how long have they been around, and are you a kind of outsourced IT department for businesses?
We are essentially an IT and Communications team for all sizes of businesses. Lumic has been around for over 15 years. While I’m based in Cheshire, we support clients across the whole of the UK.
At our core, we provide IT support, cybersecurity, and connectivity. But that’s only part of the story. We’re all about helping businesses run smoothly with the right tech—fast broadband, secure networks, and communications tools that work. Whether it’s standard broadband or dedicated leased fibre lines, connectivity is key. Without a strong, stable connection, businesses can’t get the most from their systems.
We also offer hosted telephony that integrates seamlessly with tools like Microsoft Teams, email,
mobiles, and CRM systems. Add-in robust Wi-Fi networks and business mobile SIMs, and you’ve got a fully joined-up solution from one provider.
In such a competitive and fast-moving industry, what makes your IT support different?
We tailor everything. Every business is unique, so we don’t offer one-size-fits-all packages. We take the time to understand our clients’ challenges, then build solutions that are a perfect fit.
Our approach is proactive—we’re always monitoring systems in the background to catch issues before they cause disruption. That means fewer headaches and less downtime for our clients.
Our team is experienced, straight-talking, and genuinely invested in helping businesses thrive. We’re not just here to fix things—we educate our clients too. When people understand their systems
better, they feel more in control and confident about the decisions they make.
Another big one is scalability. Some of our clients might start small, but we help them grow—and our services grow with them. Scalability is an important factor.
Cybersecurity is a real concern. How do you keep your clients protected in such an evolving threat landscape?
Security is a top priority for us. Our approach is multi-layered and always customised to suit each client’s risk profile and needs.
We start with a thorough risk assessment to pinpoint any weak spots. From there, we build protections like firewalls, antivirus, and advanced system monitoring, so threats are caught and contained fast. Regular software updates and patching are key, and we handle that too.
But tech alone isn’t enough—staff awareness is crucial. Human error is one of the biggest threats, so we also train clients and their teams in best practices. We back this up with solid data backup and recovery plans, so if anything does go wrong, clients can bounce back quickly. And we help businesses stay compliant with industry standards and regulations along the way.
How has remote working changed your clients’ needs, and how have you responded?
Remote and hybrid working are here to stay, and we’ve adapted accordingly. Flexibility is now a must for our clients—they need to access systems securely from anywhere without missing a beat.
To support that, we’ve enhanced our cloud solutions, making sure clients can get to their files and tools no matter where they are. Our remote support services mean we can resolve issues quickly, without needing to be on-site.
Cybersecurity is even more important now, so we’ve strengthened protections like VPNs and secure login protocols. We’ve also helped many clients integrate better collaboration tools—video conferencing, remote teamwork should be smooth and effective. Plus, we offer training so teams can use all this tech confidently. It’s not just about having the tool’s; it’s about using them well.
Can you share a recent success story where your support really made a difference?
One that comes to mind is our work with TMC, a marketing company that came to us looking to overhaul their tech setup. They needed faster internet, a better phone system, and more reliable connectivity.
We assessed everything and delivered a high-speed 1Gb/1Gb leased fibre line. We also replaced their ageing on-premises phone system with a flexible, cloud-based hosted solution that is integrated with all their existing tools.
We worked closely with the team to ensure everything aligned with their long-term goals. The transition was smooth, and they were delighted with the result—it’s made a real difference to their dayto-day operations and set them up for future growth.
What advice would you give to businesses looking to future-proof their IT and communications infrastructure?
Start with a good IT & Communications support partner who takes a proactive approach. Fixing problems as they arise isn’t enough—monitoring, prevention, and strategic planning are essential.
Cybersecurity should be front and centre. Multi-
layered protection, regular updates, and staff training are key. Don’t wait for a breach to take it seriously. Embrace the cloud and collaboration tools— especially those that integrate with existing systems like Microsoft Teams. They make life easier and more productive when used properly.
And think about scalability. Tech should support your growth, not limit it. Regular reviews and a clear roadmap help you stay ahead of the curve.
Lastly, stay curious! The tech world moves fast, so keep an eye on emerging trends like AI and automation and be open to exploring what could benefit your business.
Guardian Warm Roof
by Craig Pratt of Style Windows and Doors of Cheshire
If you’ve ever found your conservatory too cold in the winter and far too hot in the summer, you’re not alone. That’s exactly the problem the Guardian Warm Roof was designed to solve. It’s a fully insulated, solid roof system that replaces your existing glass or polycarbonate conservatory roof—and transforms the whole space into a comfortable, usable room all year round.
The clever thing about the Guardian system is that it’s not just a bit of extra insulation slapped on top. It’s a fully engineered solution, designed with layers of insulation, a lightweight yet strong aluminium frame, breathable membranes, and a choice of stylish roof finishes—like natural-looking slate or tiled shingles.
Inside, you can opt for a clean plastered ceiling, add spotlights, or even include roof windows to bring in natural light. It looks and feels just like a proper extension.
One of the standout features of the Guardian Warm Roof is its impressive thermal performance. It keeps the space warm in winter, cool in summer, and much quieter too—no more deafening rain on the roof! Homeowners often report reduced heating bills after installation and a noticeable difference in how often they actually use the space.
Installation is surprisingly quick and hasslefree. The whole thing is made to measure off-site and can usually be fitted in just three to five days. The old roof comes off, the new frame and layers go on, and before you know it, your conservatory is ready to enjoy again.
What’s more, the Guardian system is fully approved by the Local Authority Building Control (LABC), so it meets all the necessary building regulations.
People love the transformation. What was once a neglected space becomes a warm lounge, a quiet home office, a guest room, or a bright dining area. And it’s not just about comfort—it really boosts the overall look and feel of the house too.
With hundreds of thousands of Guardian roofs already installed across the UK, it’s a tried and trusted system that comes with a solid 10-year guarantee.
So, if you’ve been thinking about getting more from your conservatory, a Guardian Warm Roof might just be the answer. It’s practical, it’s stylish, and it genuinely makes a big difference. Warm in winter, cool in summer—and perfect every day in between.
Buying and Planting Bulbs
Autumn Planting for Spring Colour
by Margaret Turner of Wilmslow Garden Centre
Choosing and buying a selection of bulbs in late summer and autumn brings us the enormous pleasure of planning your garden for the forthcoming spring season ahead. These underground storage organs can withstand the winter frosts and are supplied dried, either loose or in bags.
Our garden centre will soon be stocked with a variety of fabulous late winter/spring flowering bulbs, so why not take a look, get some ideas and start stocking up to add that fabulous addition to your garden that will give you pleasure year on year.
We can use bulbs to brighten up our boarders, naturalize into lawns or woodland floor, or simply plant up in pots, containers and hanging baskets as an extra little surprise when planting up our autumn/ winter seasonal arrangements. (choose dwarf varieties for this) look out for indoor varieties too!
Most bulbs, corms, rhizomes and tubers have a rounded bottom from which the old roots grow. They have a pointed top from where shoots emerge. The general rule of planting is that the pointed top sits upwards.
The planting depth depends on the size of the bulb, usually 3 times the depth of the size of bulb, but have a look at the planting guide on packs or ask for advise from our team of experts in our plant area.
↑ Eranthis hyemalis (winter aconite)
↑ Muscari armeniacum (garden grape hyacinth)
Why not get prepared for your bulb planting project. You can use a spade, trowel or a special bulb planting tool to help with your task, with special bulb fibre compost and feed, this will really give your bulbs a great start and boost their productivity.
We are sure you will enjoy spending time planting your new bulbs and celebrate the spectacular displays when the cold winter months are behind us and spring is on its way.
↑ Planting bulbs is important for adding vibrant, seasonal color to gardens, providing early sources of nectar for pollinators, and offering a lowmaintenance way to enjoy beautiful blooms
Galanthus (common snowdrop), Eranthis hyemalis (winter aconite) and Crocus are all hardy reliable bulbs, which give prolific flowering from January onwards. They are usually the first signs of the winter season coming out of dormancy and we are excited in anticipation for the warmth of the spring season ahead.
In a matter of weeks, we can then enjoy the emerging colours of Narsissus (February Gold) being one of the earliest. Muscari ameniacum, Scilla Sibrica, Early Tulipa, cyclamen and Chionodoxa forbesii are just a few of our favourites, not forgetting the faithful hyacinth with its fabulous fragrance and range of colours.
Chester Local
It is just the beginning!
by Jacqui Priestley
I walk up Grosvenor Street, the hum of the city gently rising around me—an inviting blend of buskers playing soulful tunes, the chatter of shoppers weaving through boutiques, and the steady rhythm of life in Chester city centre. There’s a certain magic in this part of the world.
Historic charm mingles with a modern vibrancy, and today I feel a deep sense of pride as I make my way to Chester Cathedral to mark a rather special occasion: the launch of Chester Local, the newest edition in our series of Local magazines is in the planning stages, and I am here to talk with contributors, advertisers and the local community.
This will be the 4th title to be published with each magazine celebrating the unique character of the towns and cities we serve; and I begin to realise that Chester is something else entirely. There’s an elegance to the red-brick architecture, a charm to the cobbled streets, and a strong sense of community that runs right through its Roman foundations.
This city doesn’t just welcome you—it embraces you. And as I pass under the iconic Eastgate Clock and glance up at its ornate face, I can’t help but feel that everything is coming together at exactly the right time.
Turning into the cathedral grounds, I’m struck once again by the grandeur of the building. Chester Cathedral is both a place of worship and a place of welcome, standing proudly at the heart of the city.
Its warm sandstone walls glow in the afternoon light, and there’s a stillness in the air that immediately centres you. Inside, the vaulted ceilings stretch like arms raised in praise, and the stained-glass windows cast vibrant patterns on the stone floor beneath my feet.
It’s here, in this magnificent setting, that we will be launching Chester Local—a magazine dedicated to showcasing the best of this beautiful city: its people, its independent businesses, its events, creativity, and community spirit. The magazine will be a labour of love, carefully curated to reflect the stories that make Chester special. From artisan coffee shops tucked down side streets, to local entrepreneurs breathing new life into centuries-old buildings, this city is full of surprises—and we want to celebrate them all.
I’m joined by a lively mix of business owners, creatives, residents, and contributors—many of whom will feature in our very first edition. There’s a real buzz in the room, a sense that this magazine will be more than pages—it’ll be a platform, a voice, and a source of pride
for those who call Chester home. As we raise a glass to mark the imminent launch, I look around and see familiar faces alongside new connections being made.
That’s what Chester Local is really all about: building bridges, sparking conversations, and shining a light on the incredible talent, heritage, and warmth that makes this city so vibrant.
Later, I step out into the cloisters for a moment of quiet. The peaceful garden is in full bloom, birdsong echoing softly above the medieval stonework. I feel grateful. Not just for the chance to launch this magazine in such a treasured space, but for the city itself—for its history, its heart, and its unshakable sense of identity.
Walking back down Grosvenor Street, imagining in just a few weeks that I will have copies of Chester Local tucked proudly under my arm, I smile at the day’s success and the promise of what’s to come.
This is just the beginning!

Yes, you heard right, and yes, I am probably mad. Amy and Friends is a charity that supports children, young adults and families affected by rare DNA repair disorders like Cockayne Syndrome and Trichothiodystrophy.
They provide practical, emotional and medical support, host family events, offer respite breaks and connect families who would otherwise feel isolated. I have met some of the strongest, most inspiring people through this charity.
That is why I am doing a skydive on 31 August to raise money for them. It will be the second time I have jumped out of a plane. Clearly I did not learn the first time. To donate, visit: https://www.justgiving. com/page/amyandfriends-rewiredformen

Yes. I have an eight year old son who keeps me grounded and reminds me what really matters. Everything I do is rooted in wanting to be a better dad and build something meaningful for him.
He is full of energy, asks endless questions and keeps me on my toes.
It is not about getting it right all the time, but getting it right most of the time.
Being a dad is the most important role I have.
What do you do in your spare time?
I spend time with my son walking, exploring and making memories. I also walk a lot on my own to clear my head. I go to Andy’s Man Club on Monday nights at Old Trafford.
When I get the chance, I do some salsa dancing, yoga, reflexology and reiki to stay balanced.

This apricot bellini uses peach schnapps for the ultimate retro vibe. Perfect for serving to a crowd as a speedy summer drink, you can even make the apricot purée a few hours ahead and store in the fridge.

411g tin apricot halves in juice, drained
1 tbsp lemon juice
Ice cubes
100ml peach schnapps
37.5cl bottle prosecco
Method
Cut 2 of the drained apricot halves into 8 pieces each and thread onto 8 cocktail sticks; set aside.

The Art of Balance
by Colin Bucknor Embracing Menopause with Grace
In the heart of Cheshire, where wellness and sophistication go hand in hand, more women are beginning to reframe menopause—not as an ending, but as a powerful new chapter. For the modern woman, wellbeing isn’t just a goal—it’s a lifelong investment. And as life’s rhythms shift, so too should the way we care for ourselves.
Menopause is a natural transition, yet it often arrives with unexpected turbulence: hot flushes, restless nights, mood swings, and a sense of imbalance that can feel at odds with the calm confidence we’ve cultivated over the years. But this stage of life doesn’t have to be endured—it can be embraced.
For centuries, nature has offered gentle yet effective support. Today, that wisdom is being rediscovered through carefully curated, plant-based formulations designed to support hormonal harmony. These modern supplements draw on botanical precision to help recalibrate the body’s internal rhythms—without harsh chemicals or synthetic shortcuts.
The key lies in supporting the endocrine system with integrity. When our hormones are in balance, everything else follows: energy returns, sleep improves, and emotional clarity is restored. It’s not about turning back the clock—it’s about moving forward with strength, grace, and vitality.
More women are now choosing natural solutions that align with their values— clean, transparent, and crafted with care.
These aren’t quick fixes, but thoughtful tools that help us feel as exceptional as we look.
Because menopause isn’t a pause—it’s a powerful progression. And with the right support, it can be one of the most liberating, life-affirming seasons yet.
How I Became the Glyco Guru
Two decades ago, I sustained muscular damage that proved particularly challenging. It wasn’t until a friend recommended some glycan wellness sport products that I finally found something that truly worked.
That breakthrough ignited my passion for understanding glycans and their vital role in cellto-cell communication. My research since then has only reinforced my conviction: if we hold information that can improve someone’s health and wellness journey, it’s our moral duty to share that knowledge.
My interests now extend beyond physical well-being to encompass the crucial areas of female hormonal health and men’s mental health. I believe a holistic approach to health is essential, and understanding these aspects can significantly contribute to overall wellness. View more information at www.glycoguru.com
Summer on a Plate: Grilled Salmon with Mango & Avocado Salsa
There’s nothing quite like a vibrant, fresh dish to celebrate the best of summer. This grilled salmon with mango and avocado salsa is bursting with colour, flavour, and goodness. Packed with omega-3 fats, antioxidants, and fresh produce, it’s a nutritious option that’s as good for your body as it is for your taste buds.
Whether you’re entertaining in the garden or enjoying a light al fresco supper, this easy recipe is quick to prepare and full of feel-good ingredients.
Ingredients
Serves 2
For the salmon:
2 salmon fillets (skin on)
1 tbsp olive oil
Juice of ½ lemon
Salt and black pepper
1 tsp smoked paprika
For the salsa:
1 ripe mango, diced
1 ripe avocado, diced
½ red onion, finely chopped
Juice of 1 lime
Small bunch of fresh coriander, chopped
1 red chilli (optional), finely chopped
Pinch of salt
To serve:
Mixed salad leaves
Cooked quinoa or wholegrain rice (optional)
Method
Marinate the salmon:
In a bowl, mix olive oil, lemon juice, paprika, salt and pepper. Rub over the salmon fillets and let them marinate for 15 minutes.
Prepare the salsa:
In a separate bowl, gently combine mango, avocado, red onion, lime juice, coriander, and chilli (if using). Season lightly with salt and set aside to let the flavours mingle.
Grill the salmon:
Heat a grill pan or barbecue over medium-high heat. Place the salmon fillets skin-side down and cook for around 4 minutes, then flip and cook for a further 3–4 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and flakes easily.
Serve:
Place the salmon on a bed of quinoa or rice, spoon the salsa generously on top, and serve with a super Summer salad of tomatoes, radish, cucumber, lettuce and red pepper..
Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which support heart health and reduce inflammation. Mango and avocado provide a wealth of vitamins, fibre and healthy fats. The salsa is raw, fresh, and hydrating—ideal for warm days when lighter meals are more appealing. Enjoy!

Step 3

Travelling the World by Train, One Magical Journey at a Time
by Simon Bollington, Local Travel Expert
There are many famous and popular train journeys around the world which offer complete luxury and some last for days so the comfort is needed! From alpine peaks to tropical rainforests, few experiences rival the nostalgic romance and scenic immersion of a great train journey.
With windows framing the landscapes like moving postcards and carriages echoing stories of distant lands, these iconic rail routes take travellers far beyond the destination. Whether you’re craving luxury, adventure, or simply a slice of the world slipping by, these are some of the top train journeys to add to your travel bucket list.
The Glacier Express — Switzerland
Nicknamed the slowest express train in the world, the Glacier Express (pictured bottom left) is not about speed, but spectacle. Connecting the alpine resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz, this 8-hour journey takes passengers through 91 tunnels and across 291 bridges.
Floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows reveal snowcapped peaks, deep valleys, and charming villages in what is arguably Europe’s most picturesque country. First-class service and fine Swiss cuisine only enhance the journey.
The Rocky Mountaineer — Canada
Winding through the dramatic landscapes of British Columbia and Alberta, the Rocky Mountaineer offers a luxury experience matched only by the scenery outside. Travelers glide past glacial lakes, dense forests, and the towering Canadian Rockies.
With gourmet meals served onboard and overnight stops in top-tier hotels, this train is as much about indulgence as it is about nature.
The Ghan — Australia
Spanning the continent from Darwin to Adelaide, The Ghan is a 2,979-kilometer adventure through Australia’s outback. Named after Afghan camel drivers who once traversed this route, the train offers a fascinating mix of comfort and exploration.
From red desert plains to tropical savannahs, and excursions to ancient gorges and Aboriginal cultural sites, The Ghan delivers a deep dive into the heart of Australia. Travelling on The Ghan there are two options; from Adelaide to Darwin it’s a three day rail trip, or from Darwin to Adelaide it’s The Ghan Expedition and is four days, and this is the one you want if you’d like some in-depth exploring of the stops along the way including Katherine, Alice Springs, Manguri and Coober Pedy.
Orient Express
Today, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (VSOE)—a lovingly restored version of the original— offers travellers the chance to step into a 1920s time capsule. Operated by Belmond, the train runs routes across Europe, including the famed Paris-to-Venice
journey and seasonal voyages to cities like Vienna, Prague, Istanbul, and Amsterdam. Each carriage, a meticulously restored antique, tells a story.
From Lalique glass panels to Art Deco marquetry, every detail is faithful to the train’s heyday. The cabins—some of which convert into plush suites by night—feature vintage furnishings and modern touches, blending nostalgia with comfort.
And then there’s the dining. Gourmet meals, prepared by French chefs onboard, are served in artful dining cars with crisp linen and silver service. Whether it’s lobster from Brittany or truffle-laced risotto, each dish is a culinary journey unto itself.
The Blue Train
In a world obsessed with speed, The Blue Train invites travellers to slow down and indulge. This iconic South African rail journey, often described as a “moving five-star hotel,” glides elegantly between Pretoria and Cape Town, offering a blend of opulence, history, and scenery unlike any other.
Since its inception in the 1920s, The Blue Train has carried royalty, presidents, and celebrities across 1,600 kilometres of breathtaking terrain. Think rolling vineyards, craggy mountains, golden savannahs— and all viewed from the comfort of your private
suite, complete with a marble-tiled bathroom, plush bedding, and butler service. Onboard, the experience is as rich as the landscape outside.
Fine dining with award-winning South African wines, mahogany-panelled lounges, and cigar bars transport passengers back to a golden age of travel. Stops include a guided excursion to the historic diamond mines of Kimberley, offering a glimpse into the country’s glittering past. Whether you’re a luxury lover or a romantic at heart, The Blue Train is more than a mode of travel—it’s a destination in itself.
All Aboard Adventure
Whether you’re sipping champagne in a leather seat or leaning out the window of a vintage carriage, these rail journeys remind us that sometimes the journey is the destination. In an age of rush and routine, trains invite us to pause, look out the window, and rediscover the joy of getting there.
So next time you plan a trip, consider trading security lines and rental cars for the gentle rhythm of the rails. You might just find that the best views of the world are only a train ride away.
The Perfect Little Walk
by Jacqui Priestley
There’s something a little fabulous about Wilmslow when the sun is shining — like it’s auditioning for a rom-com set in Cheshire. I live in Wilmslow, and have done so for several years now, so I feel like I am entitled to look at its eccentricities and foibles with a fond compassion for ‘my’ people and places, so off I go, one sunny mid-week afternoon...
Well, the pavements positively twinkle, the locals glide by in oversized sunglasses, and even the dogs look well-groomed enough to have their own Instagram accounts. I decided it was the perfect day for a gentle wander — no agenda, just a whimsical walk through the stylish streets, stopping wherever my curiosity (and appetite) took me.
First port of call? The ever-charming Buzzy Bee Bakery. Tucked away just enough to feel like a secret, it’s a sugary little haven where the pastries are as cheerful as the staff. Inside, the counter groans under the weight of buttery croissants, pastel-iced buns, and enough glittering cupcakes to make a unicorn weep.
I settle on a honey-glazed Danish (a nod to the bee theme) and a flat white that’s so good it makes me contemplate a second. I sit by the window, nibbling and sipping while
watching the fashion parade stroll past — gym gear, poodles, the occasional sequinned handbag — it’s all part of the show.
Onwards, I meander into Edinburgh Woollen Mill for a touch of tactile therapy. Step into summer at the new Edinburgh Woollen Mill on Grove Street in Wilmslow, where colour and comfort take centre stage—without a woolly jumper in sight. This fresh seasonal range is full of vibrant florals, soft linens, and breezy cottons, perfect for sunny days and warm evenings.
There’s nothing quite like Water Lane when the sun is out in full cheer. The light bounces off the glass shopfronts and the polished café tables spill onto the pavement, inviting you to linger. As you stroll down this charming street, the scent of fresh coffee mingles with hints of artisan pastries drifting from hidden bakeries and stylish cafés. Shoppers flit between independent boutiques, luxury beauty counters and designer stores, their arms swinging with glossy bags. Laughter drifts from open-air tables where locals sip Aperols and discuss weekend plans, while the well-groomed dogs trot proudly alongside their owners, tails wagging.
Women’s wear features cheerful prints, lightweight dresses, and relaxed trousers in uplifting hues, while easy-care fabrics make looking stylish effortless. From floaty blouses to bold tunics and cropped trousers, it’s all about keeping cool and feeling good.
There’s a gentle nod to the British countryside in some designs, with nature-inspired patterns and soft embroidery adding charm and personality. Whether you’re updating your wardrobe or just browsing for inspiration, this collection brings a breath of fresh air to Wilmslow’s Town Centre.
You might pause at a florist bursting with colour, or duck into one of the art galleries that line the street, discovering a piece of local creativity. The trees rustle gently in the breeze, and there’s a hum of happiness in the air. Whether you’re browsing, people-watching or simply soaking up the rays, Water Lane on a sunny day is pure Wilmslow magic — elegant, effortlessly stylish, and full of warm, laidback charm. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and stay a little longer.
The sun is now high and hunger strikes in that deeply emotional way only pizza can fix. Enter Wood Fire Smoke, a rustic, effortlessly cool haven of blistered dough and heavenly aromas. Inside, it’s buzzing with families, couples, and
solo diners like me, all united in reverence for melted cheese. I order a Verdure — classic, dependable, glorious and brimming with cheese, olives, peppers, artichoke, onion. pesto and basil — and it arrives like a warm, slightly charred love letter from Naples. I eat slowly, with the smugness of someone who knows they’ve peaked too soon.
After lunch, I take a little detour. Just around the corner on Alderley Road, there’s a fresh buzz in town: Plant Boost, a bright new acai and superfood café, has opened. This lively addition brings smoothie bowls, cold-pressed juices, avocado toast, and that essential feel-good vibe to Wilmslow.. Think lush, greenery-filled interiors, sunny colours, and friendly chatter—ideal for a health-conscious pit-stop or brunch hangout. Hop inside post-walk for an acai bowl that’s as Instagram-worthy as it is nutritious.
A small but vibrant step into wellness on my happily eccentric stroll!, then onwards to the final indulgence of the day: Casa Italia. Oh, Casa Italia! It’s less a shop, more a portal to sun-drenched Tuscan villages and slow Sunday lunches. Inside, shelves overflow with olive oils, cured meats, truffle salts, and biscotti so crunchy you could break up with someone just by biting into one.
The owners are charmingly eccentric — all flowing scarves, expressive hand gestures and Italianaccented enthusiasm. “This vinegar!” one exclaims, holding up a bottle like it’s a priceless jewel. “You drizzle it on strawberries. Trust me!” And I do. I leave with a bottle of that very vinegar, a lemon-infused olive oil, and a small wheel of cheese I couldn’t pronounce but definitely needed.
By the end of my walk, I’m sun-kissed, slightly overloaded with shopping bags, and feeling delightfully like I’ve stepped out of my own Nancy Meyers movie. Wilmslow, with all its elegance, charm and quirky characters, has a way of turning an ordinary afternoon into something quietly magical. And really — isn’t that the whole point of a perfect little walk?
Jacqui Priestley spends five minutes with Dave Skeels, CEO of Cheshire based company, Energised Earth
Can you tell me about Energised Earth?
Energised Earth is a director lead business supported by a hand-picked portfolio of market proven supply partners that lead the way in their respective sectors.
Energised Earth brings together two decades of cross-industry knowledge into one central location enabling a holistic approach to both energy and the environment. We focus on four key areas, energy procurement, usage reduction, renewable energy and energy strategy.
Do you mainly work in the commercial sector, or can you benefit the residential market also?
Most of the work Energised Earth completes is in the commercial and industrial sectors, this said with specific regards to renewable energy projects in the Northwest we are very happy to work with and do work with the residential sector. Often you will find us
in shops, hotels, restaurants, factories, farms, offices and even warehouses, basically if it has an energy demand we will be there to support.
What is an environmental consultant, and what can you do to save us money on our everincreasing energy costs?
An interesting question! We are professionally nosey inside existing buildings and ask questions of buildings before they are built and still at drawing stage. The better question to ask is “How does/is
this building going to live/operate?” We want to know how it will use energy, what is using it, can it be optimised, and can we generate on-site energy?
It is our job to ask those questions that may not have been asked, perhaps due to no experience in this sector or that no one in post has that as a job. I once found a site with a £400 per month gas bill that didn’t even have a gas supply to the site. Simply no one had asked “Why are we being billed for gas?” It is the fresh set of focused eyes that can transform a business.
It is not always about money. Nowadays, it is often about the environment too, how does a business improve its environmental credentials, and we can very much help with this too.
Let’s talk about a subject we hear about continually; renewable energy. Have solar panels had their day, or are they as popular as ever, and more importantly, do they really save us money?
There are multiple types of renewable energy, however they produce either electricity or heat in some cases both. Solar pv is by far the most wellknown and deployed for the generation of electricity. Has solar pv had its day? Absolutely not. I would argue strongly it is now more important than ever, and the industry is in a very strong position.
Saving money? Again absolutely, though the deployment strategy has changed a little. When we used to have associated tariffs where you were paid handsomely for the generated energy regardless of if you used it onsite or exported it, we would fill every available bit of roof space. Now Government tariffs have been removed the sale price to grid is sizably smaller as such a solar system would be matched to your energy demand. This all said for everything generated you are not buying that from grid and there is the saving.
Your website showcases energy efficient modular housing, but that’s a pipe dream for the future, isn’t it, rather than a realistic option for today?
Modular housing is very much available today and here to stay too. It may not be mainstream yet, however the commercial sector, specifically hotels and fast-food restaurants use them regularly.
Early adopters in the residential sector are now sharing the benefits of factory built, controlled construction that provided premium quality superefficient buildings. Why would you not want to live in a hassle-free, low running cost, environmentally friendly building?
Do you feel that Energised Earth can really make a difference?
We can all make a difference no matter how small, will we cure all the planet’s challenges overnight? Sadly no. This said we can and should all leave our own legacy.
We have a friend, Lars in Sweden. He chose to leave corporate life to plant some trees in the Amazon. Once he had reached his initial target of 1 million trees planted his passion was fuelled to go out and plant 100 million trees and that is what he is doing now. This is a real legacy, what will YOUR legacy look like?
What is your future ambition?
A self-build eco home for the family.
What do you do to relax?
You will likely find me out on the water in the Lake District in my happy place looking at the mountains.
As a successful business owner and entrepreneur, what advice would you give to someone setting up their own business today?
Find your passion, listen to others to learn every day, have a solid moral compass and absolutely look after those that look after you, for without them, you wouldn’t be you.
