Rob Macfie catches up with Brad Pitt for Lloyd’s ‘Living the Dream’

Numbers don’t lie.

Brad Pitt has a Golden Globe. He’s been nominated for two Oscars. Been voted the Sexiest Man Alive – twice. He’s got six kids. Earns $30 million a movie. And is one half of the world’s most famous celebrity couple.

He’s also unfailingly gracious, good humoured and game for all questions.

Including those about life with Angelina Jolie.

In his latest movie, the spell-check defying Inglourious Basterds, Pitt plays a redneck Jewish-American soldier operating in occupied France - whose self-proclaimed mission is “to kill as many Nazis as possible”. It’s gloriously silly, blood-spattered and thoroughly entertaining.

When Quentin Tarantino finished writing the movie (which took him 10 years), he flew directly to France to convince Pitt to play the lead role. He didn’t need much convincing.

“I’m a huge Tarantino fan. We talked about movies deep into the night.

I got up the next morning and saw five empty wine bottles lying on the floor. Five! Apparently, I’d agreed to do the movie, because six weeks later I was in uniform. I was Lieutenant Aldo Raine.”

Unlike most of Tarantino’s leading men, Pitt wasn’t a Tinsel Town has-been looking to boost a flagging career when Quentin knocked on his door.

He’d just received an Oscar nomination for his part in the multi-award winning, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

One of the most influential people in Hollywood and, according to Time, listed as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, Brad Pitt is more than an actor. He’s a global icon. Even Barack Obama takes his calls.

Which is a far cry from his humble beginnings - playing bit parts in the TV soap, Dallas.

The love scene with Geena Davis in the road movie, Thelma & Louise launched Pitt’s career. Stripped to the waist and shot in soft focus, the sight of him, all abs, pecs and chiselled good looks, turned him (overnight) from a soap extra into a sex symbol.

A series of varied and high profile movies followed. But, as he’s keen to explain, he didn’t always pick roles that compliment him.

“I got lost in the wilderness of fame a bit,” he says. “There are all these opportunities you’re supposed to be taking and I got all discombobulated.”

More often, though, instinct pulled him in the direction of eccentric, less commercial roles. Like his scene-stealing turn in 12 Monkeys, which earned him his first Oscar nomination. He was also perfectly cast as Tyler Durden in the cult classic, Fight Club. And in Snatch, he cemented himself as an icon in the eyes of British moviegoers when he played Mickey, the one-punch pikey.

He’s had huge box office success too. As Rusty Ryan in the Ocean series (11, 12 and 13) he plays alongside his close friend and fellow heartthrob George Clooney. The movie Troy is his biggest grossing film to date – partly because he gets his kit off. And his on-screen chemistry with Angelina Jolie made Mr & Mrs Smith a box office smash.

Last year he successfully spun the crass commercial potential of his family’s notoriety into public goodwill, selling baby pictures of his twins (which the paparazzi would get over time) for $14 million. All of which was funnelled into charities around the world.

Mr & Mrs Smith was a turning point in Pitt’s life. From the day he walked on to the set, rumour, speculation and a legion of paparazzi have shadowed his every move. And he’s been single-handedly keeping the tabloids in business ever since.

Pitt spends a lot of his time (and his money) on charitable projects. The Jolie-Pitt Foundation donates tens of millions to humanitarian causes around the world each year. And in the US, Pitt, who’s a keen student of architecture, used his money and knowledge to help rebuild areas of New Orleans devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

The question that ignited the media machine (was he still married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston when he fell in love with Angelina Jolie) won’t go away. But he’s keen to put that one to bed.

“For areas like this that suffered such injustice to suddenly become the greenest, most advanced neighbourhoods in the US is an incredible achievement,” he explains.

“What people don’t realise is that we filmed [Mr & Mrs Smith] for a year,” he explains. “We were still filming after Jen and I split up. Even then it doesn’t mean that there was some kind of dastardly affair. There wasn’t.

I’m very proud of the way it was handled. It was respectful.”

He’s so passionate about it that, in a recent meeting with President Obama, he promoted his concept of green housing as a national model – and even discussed the possibility of federal funding for more housing projects.

With six children (that he hates being apart from) and the importance of his charity work, Pitt now only picks movies that are interesting and quirky.

Four years on and six children later, the world’s media still feed voraciously off Pitt and Jolie’s relationship. Brangelina gossip is a global business. Instead of getting upset about the media hoopla that surrounds him, Pitt’s learned to use his celebrity status to promote causes close to his heart.

“If I’m going to go to work, it must be something of value,” he explains.

“Because one day my kids are going to see it and I want them to be proud.”

The Tree of Life and Lost City of Z, are due out next year. He’s not giving too much away, but he believes he’s chosen very well.

D

avid Brabham took another prestigious place in the annals of motorsport history in June this year when he added the Le Mans 24 Hours mantle to his illustrious racing CV. Aged 43, and armed with Team Peugeot Total’s 908 HDi FAP racer, the former Formula One driver and internationally renowned sports car star took victory in the 77th running of the world’s most prestigious motorsport endurance event after 16 years of trying.

“It doesn’t matter what category you are racing in, it’s a race - the pressures are equal and you have only one goal in mind. You still have to do the same preparation. It really made no difference to my feelings, winning in the Aston Martin to winning with Team Peugeot Total. It’s only when you pick up the papers or receive hundreds of emails of good wishes that you realise what it all means. Everyone’s support has been amazing and that has meant so much to me.”

In the process of fulfilling a life-long dream, Brabham’s efforts helped Peugeot to end Audi’s domination at the historic event and take the French manufacturer’s first Le Mans win since 1993. Coincidentally, it was another Brabham - David’s older brother Geoff - who last took Peugeot to victory lane, 16 years ago.

The youngest son of triple F1 world champion Sir Jack Brabham, David’s Le Mans victory could not have come at a more appropriate time as the family celebrates the 50th anniversary of Jack’s first F1 title in 1959.

But David is no stranger to winning ways at Le Mans, having taken back-to-back GT1 class wins with Aston Martin Racing in 2007 and 2008, meaning his outright victory in 2009 grants him membership of an elite club of drivers that can claim multiple class wins at Le Mans.

“Winning outright at Le Mans has been on my wish list for some time, so it feels really good,” the Australian admitted, “But what I found really interesting afterwards is that, although the victory was special, looking back it was actually the entire journey to achieve that dream that meant the most.

“For me personally, it makes no difference winning the GT1 class, as I have for the last two years, to winning overall. I guess the only difference is other people’s reactions and the way the win is viewed. When you win Le Mans outright, everyone talks about it. Yet, having won in both the GT1 and LMP1 classes, what I felt during the race and on the podium was actually the same.

“This is a very special year for the entire family and a chance to celebrate my father’s remarkable racing achievements. Not only did he win the F1 world title three times, but he remains to this day the only driver to win in a car of his own construction,” continued David.

"We’ve been doing lots to celebrate the occasion. I was lucky enough to drive my father’s 1959 championship-winning Cooper Climax T51 at Sebring in the USA earlier this year, the track where he took the title by pushing his car over half a mile to the finishing line.

“We also recently launched the first-ever merchandise collection to be released by the family, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. American racing legend Dan Gurney and my good friend and fellow Australian Mark Webber joined me especially for the occasion, which meant a lot.”

Although Sir Jack never won outright at Le Mans, the motor racing legend can proudly claim that two of his sons have. But David explains that, despite the 16-year gap in the siblings’ victories, the advances in technology, the cars, and changes in rules and conditions, the respective race wins demand equal respect.

“I don’t think you can say one was tougher than the other. Winning the Le Mans 24 Hours is a tough experience. It’s a long haul leading up to the race, with all the testing and development that Peugeot did with the 905 in 1993 and with the 908 HDi FAP in 2009. I feel that there’s no real difference, there was a lot of hard work and the pressures were still the same.”

Aside from the moonlighting role with Peugeot Sport for Le Mans, David races full time with the Patrón Highcroft Racing team in the American Le Mans Series. Since his ALMS debut in 1999, David has become one of the series’ most accomplished drivers, with 16 race wins and nine pole positions from 81 starts to his credit before the onslaught of the 2009 season. He is also the only driver to boast pole positions and race wins in each of the four ALMS classes, creating his own powerful legacy fitting of the Brabham name.

After narrowly missing out on the ALMS LMP2 class championship title in 2008, 2009 marks David’s 11th year racing in the ALMS, where he returns to the LMP1 category with Patrón Highcroft Racing’s Acura ARX-02a. With the team and the manufacturer’s first LMP1 victory coming in round two at St Petersburg, back-to-back wins at Road America and Mosport and a consistent run of podium finishes in the bag, David leads the championship with just two rounds remaining.

I don’t think you can say one was tougher than the other. Winning the Le Mans 24 Hours is a tough experience Consequently, he explains that there’s little time for sitting back on his laurels.

“Le Mans was a fantastic achievement, but that is over now. We’ve ticked that box, but there’s another box to be ticked, which is winning the American Le Mans Series with Patrón Highcroft and Acura. There’s no time to sit back and get too mixed up in your memories of Le Mans. You have to move forward quickly in this business and we are already focused on how we are going to take the ALMS championship spoils.”

As an Australian living in Henley-on-Thames, England, competing in the ALMS and across world class endurance racing events, David has collected more passport stamps than many. Although motorsport has not been the standard flag bearer for the ‘save the planet brigade’, the father of three is keen to ensure there is plenty of beauty left on this planet for his children and future generations to enjoy.

David is better positioned than most to have a unique insight into the environmental challenges facing earth. It was his email to ALMS founder Don Panoz that helped to bring about the Michelin Green X Challenge, a scheme unique to the ALMS that rewards one prototype and one GT team each race for overall performance, fuel efficiency and the least impact on the environment.

An ambassador for Energy Efficiency in Motorsport (EEMS), David proudly sports the image of the earth on the back of his helmet and on the belt strap of his race suit.

“It is nice to be part of a country and feel like you are part of something, but I feel we should be bigger than that,” he offered, “We are all part of a global community that is far more important than pushing one country against another.

“We are all here, living together, breathing the same air, enjoying the same sunshine – we are all part of one race and that is why I have the globe on my suit instead of, or alongside, the Australian flag.”

David recently joined the likes of South African Nobel Peace laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu and activist artist-musician and John Lennon widow Yoko Ono in supporting the Humanity’s Team movement by signing a global grassroots petition appealing to the United Nations to declare an annual Oneness Day. The non-profit Humanity’s Team is a

global grassroots spiritual movement focusing on awakening the world to ‘Oneness’. Dubbed a ‘Civil Rights Movement for the Soul’, Humanity’s Team work at the level of belief to reconnect people to the principle that all of life is part of one essence, which is whole, sacred and divine.

Despite his gruelling schedule, David also clearly has a passion for putting plenty back into the sport he loves. He has led the Motor Sports Association’s (MSA) British Race Elite driver training programme since its inception in 2007, helping to groom the next generation of British racing drivers. he glitzy and glamorous have once again graced the beach community of Sandbanks in Poole, as the British Beach Polo Championships returned to Dorset earlier this summer.

More than six-thousand attended the 2009 Championships, and among those who turned up, chilled out and played some ‘chukkas’ were famous names from the worlds of sport, music and fashion. Alongside international polo stars such as England captain, Chris Hyde, and Arena Gold Cup Winner, Jamie Le Hardy, were boxing legend, Joe Calzaghe, DJ Phil Faversham from leading house music label, Hed Kandi and international supermodel, Jodie Kidd.

Six teams of the most talented international and national polo players competed in this world-class sporting event with Lloyds Property Group team, comprising three international players – Spencer McCarthy, a close friend of Tom Doyle, and the two talented arena players Maurice and Eden Ormerod - making the finals but narrowly beaten by the winning team 8-6 on penalties.

Covering a smaller area than conventional polo, the beach polo was fast paced and exciting which gave spectators the advantage of watching the action at close quarters. The matches followed arena polo rules, with each team made up of three players.

In addition to the Championship match schedule and the international game between England and South America, a charity ‘horse power’ race in aid of the Heaton-Ellis Trust took place on both days. Crowds witnessed

an Audi Q7 go head-to-head with a polo pony in the ultimate display of horse power and the winner, on both occasions, was the pony.

The British Beach Polo Championships concluded on each day with ‘Party at the Beach Polo’. On the Friday, HedKandi, record label, radio show as well as international club sensation, delivered the chic evening beach party - HedKandi’s only UK beach party and on the Saturday evening the Priva Polo finale party finished the event in style with sounds provided by special guest DJs, Sam Young, who has played at parties for the likes of Naomi Campbell, Justin Timberlake, Donatella Versace and Elton John, and DJ Charles, who at only 18 has played amongst some of the greats including Erick Morillo and Mark Ronson.

Event organiser, Johnny Wheeler, said: “The two-day event was designed to entertain everyone from polo supporters through to families who just wanted to watch the action from the beach. The event also has to attract the world’s finest polo players who insist on great playing conditions, good competition and a large crowd. It was a huge success all-round”.

DESIGN A new interpretation of one of the great 20th-century classics – the Eames Lounge Chair in white Charles and Ray Eames were pioneers, constantly looking for new materials for their innovative designs. In the mid 1950s, they designed the Lounge Chair and Ottoman as a modern interpretation of the traditional English club armchair. Featuring black leather cushions, a dark palisander veneer and black painted aluminium, this classic version of the Lounge Chair went on to become a modern design icon.

This design was the culmination of the designers’ efforts to create comfortable and stylish lounge seating by using production techniques that combine technology and handcraftmanship. Its heritage goes back to the moulded plywood chairs they pioneered in the 1940s, and forms part of the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

The IS 250C is the third model in the IS Range, joining the petrol and diesel IS saloons and the ultra-high performance IS F. The two full-size rear seats are set 30mm further inboard than those of the IS saloon to optimise headroom and are separated by a centre console. Ample legroom is provided thanks to the more slender profile of the front seats and a class-leading 542mm between the rear H-point to the front seatback. Access to the rear seats is made easier by an increase of 300mm in the length of the front doors, compared to the saloon.

The front seats have a one-touch walk-in button, which automatically folds and slides the seat forwards. Generous luggage space has been achieved by lengthening the rear overhang by 50mm and exceptionally compact packaging of the folding roof structure.
