The Making of

Clive Christian Every elegant home interior created by exclusive global brand Clive Christian is the result of an in-depth design, manufacture and installation process. The manufacturing combines the use of state-of-the-art machinery with the skills of numerous artisans, so behind the undeniable wow factor lies a great deal of painstaking attention to detail.

The luxury design house makes all of their own furniture at the company workshops in Farnworth, and the quality is second to none in the industry. They are so confident of this that they provide a lifetime guarantee on the furniture. Every single cabinet in a room of Clive Christian furniture is made to order, the doors and drawers are individually sized, and the furniture is assembled by hand.

The company have recently released images from their workshops demonstrating various aspects of their manufacturing, offering a rare glimpse into the production side of high end bespoke furniture.

The Victorian dining chairs are all finished by hand, and the company coat of arms is painted by a fine artist onto each one.

The dining tables are also decorated with marquetry depicting the Clive Christian Empire flame. As shown here, the inlay is meticulously hand cut and put together.

Clive Christian also offers a personalised service and you can see below that the back of this chair is being prepared for having a specially designed marquetry inlay applied. The inlay is in a different wood than the chair back so that part of the chair has to be masked before applying any stain.

Clive Christian glazed doors have their glass panes individually fitted by hand. Traditional rope bead is fitted to hold the glass in place, which is a more superior method than putty or bead.

Clive Christian has a state-of-the-art finishing department. The spraying booth is self-contained and air is passed through filters fitted to the outside of the booth to remove particles from the air. All furniture finishes are matched to in-house samples for consistency (the sprayer is holding a sample in his hand). Following a coat of lacquer being applied, the furniture is placed into a curing oven that hardens the lacquer finish as it reacts to the infra-red rays that are transmitted inside the oven, providing a beautiful and hard wearing finish.

A fresh approach to Parisian dining Enter a restaurant where decadence meets simplicity – Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athenee. Set in the sumptuous, romantic city of Paris, the back-to-basics nature of its menu is offset beautifully with breathtaking décor and meticulous waiting staff.

Alain Ducasse approached the restaurant with a clear ethos: “We have to get back to basics. Start all over again. Begin with real taste and original aromas. Allow them to fully express their vibrancy and subtlety. Give technique back its real role, its single purpose – revealing the flavours of nature. This is the simple, honest belief that I have been working so hard to promote since my earliest days in the profession, and now I want to bring this quintessence to the Plaza Athenee.” That’s exactly what you’ll find on the menu – good, freshly sourced food that needs little more than a helping hand from experts such as head chef Christophe Saintagne and head pastry chef Nicolas Berger. The team believe in letting the ingredients speak for themselves, without being overpowered or over-embellished by too many cooks. The flavours of the ocean are reflected in dishes such as its Langoustine Tartare, freshly prepared and simply seasoned with lime juice, salt and pepper. In an industry where flamboyance can all too easily

overrule simplicity, the Plaza Athenee has bravely decided to adopt a ‘less is more’ approach, allowing natural flavours to shine through.

To ensure that organic flavour is the order of the day, the bountiful harvests of the changing seasons play an important part at the Plaza Athenee. Late summer sees bass replaced by turbot until winter sets in once more, while French cuisine is respected with three classically national dishes each season, such as poultry from Bresse with Albufera sauce and Alba truffles. An emphasis on natural produce means that the restaurant maintains close relations with local farmers, vegetable growers and fishmongers. Ingredients are sourced from close regions, ensuring that food is as fresh as can be. Scallops are brought ashore from the Seine estuary, to be eaten on the same day. A dessert known as ‘Citrus Lovers’ Delight’ features a number of different citrus fruits, collected by fruit farmers Benedicte and Michel Baches at the foot of Mont Canigou in the Pyrenees. Every dish, it would seem, has a local story to tell, with farmers and chefs working in harmony to create the perfect dining experience. To help complement such fresh and uncomplicated flavours the finest wine is then selected, introduced by head sommeliers Gerard Margeon and Laurent Roucayrol. Guests can also expect ‘mini dishes’ at selected interludes during the meal; whether it be a palette-cleansing soup, flavoured prawns or a mouthful of steamed cereal, it’s little treats like this that make the service extra special.

As you’ll notice as soon as you walk through its doors, attention to detail at the Plaza Athenee doesn’t just end with the menu. At this sophisticated venue, tableware and décor are treated with as much love and care as the dishes. A place where art and style come together, diners are presented with carefully selected tableware to set the scene perfectly. Well-respected

Inspired by the swirls of the Baroque period, unique ‘Volute’ plates have been painstakingly designed by Pierre and made by porcelain manufacturer JL Coquet. These eye-catching pieces are placed on crisp, ivory tablecloths, accompanied by MD Crystal glasses, 19th-century ‘Monthelie’ cutlery and crystal-sundae dishes by Saint-Louis. Every piece of tableware has been deliberately selected and designed to enhance a guest’s dining experience.

Patrick has been making some changes to its décor – the most dramatic change being the covering of four large screens in unique pieces of embroidery. With large graphics depicting garlic, mushroom and artichoke, the screens are a deliberate nod to the establishment’s emphasis on fresh produce. At the back of the restaurant, the fireplace resembles that of an art installation. Also designed by Patrick Jouin, three sculptural delftware logs (created by Jean-Philippe Hazard) are lit by a number of coloured lights, their reflections a subtle suggestion of fire.

As well as its simple yet sublime cuisine and stunning décor, the Plaza Athenee prides itself on a meticulous waiting service. With an emphasis on creating a unique and memorable experience for each and every diner, the team demonstrate an effortless fluidity in its service. Guests can expect to be greeted by finely presented waiting staff, dressed in designer uniforms that are as smart and immaculate as the tables they serve.

DEPP Johnny Depp hadn’t always wanted to be an actor, however, fate, hard work and some inspired film choices have ensured that he is now perceived as one of an elite group of top Hollywood stars. His first and primary love was rock and roll and he dropped out of school at the age of sixteen to pursue a career in music. Depp fronted numerous garage bands – the most famous – The Kids, opened a gig for Iggy Pop. However, more importantly, the success of The Kids gave him a rising sense of popularity and accomplishment, following a traumatic adolescence.

It was his first wife, Lori Anne Allison, whom he married in 1983 that introduced him to Nicholas Cage who advised Depp to pursue acting as a career. As an actor, he is best known for his portrayals of offbeat, eccentric characters such as Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow, Edward D. Wood, Jr. in Ed Wood, and Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. It was, however, the television series 21 Jump Street in 1987 that gave him his big break and first brought Depp to the public’s attention, giving him the tag of teen idol. Feeling unused to this type of intense attention and uncomfortable with the direction his career was going, he turned his focus to film roles.

In seven of his films, he has collaborated with director and close friend Tim Burton, most recently in Alice in Wonderland and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Depp has referred to working with Burton as “coming home”, and he wrote the introduction to Burton on Burton, a book of interviews with the director, in which he called Burton “...a brother, a friend,.. …and [a] brave soul”.

Depp has achieved critical acclaim for his work, particularly his portrayals of real life figures and has become one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood with his films grossing over $2.6 billion at the United States box office and over $6 billion worldwide. He has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor three times, Screen Actors Guild Awards four times and Golden Globe Awards eight times. Depp won the Best Actor Awards from the Golden Globes for his role in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and from the Screen Actors Guild for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Depp’s film characters have been defined as “iconic loners,” and Depp has often stated that he has chosen to appear in films that he found personally interesting, rather than those he thought would succeed at the box office.

Depp’s status as a major star was assured with the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean series of films for which his lead performance as the enigmatic pirate Captain Jack Sparrow has been highly praised. The film’s director, Gore Verbinski, has said that Depp’s character closely resembles Depp’s own personality, although Depp himself said that he modelled the character after Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, who played Depp’s father in At World’s End. Depp himself has said that Sparrow is “definitely a big part of me”.

Since 1998, Depp has had a relationship with Vanessa Paradis, a French actress and singer whom he met while filming The Ninth Gate and the couple have two children. He has stated that having children has given him

“real foundation, a real strong place to stand in life, in work, in everything”.

“You can’t plan the kind of deep love that results in children. Fatherhood was not a conscious decision. It was part of the wonderful ride I was on.

It was destiny; kismet. All the math finally worked.” Depp and his family split their time between Paris, Los Angeles, The Bahamas, and their villa in Le Plan-de-la-Tour, in the south of France. Depp also acquired a vineyard estate in the area in 2007.

However, he hasn’t left his musical side behind. As a guitar player, Depp has recorded a solo album, played slide guitar on the Oasis song “Fade In-Out”, and “Fade Away (Warchild Version)”. He also played acoustic guitar in the movie Chocolat and on the soundtrack to Once Upon a Time in Mexico. He is friends with The Pogues’ Shane MacGowan, and performed on MacGowan’s first solo album. He was also a member of P, a group featuring Butthole Surfers singer Gibby Haynes and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea and has appeared in Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ music video “Into the Great Wide Open”.

It is a rivalry that started in 1877 and has grown to become the ultimate cricketing battle between England and Australia.

The Ashes are contested every two years and hosted alternately between the two nations.

England’s epic win and historic defence of the Ashes trophy has capped a number of spectacular records for the team including the first time they have won a Test series in Australia in 24-years. The visitors concluded their victory in Sydney, winning the fifth and final Test of the series by an innings and 83 runs after accumulating 644 runs – the highest single-innings score ever by an English team in a Test match in Australia.

England’s victory was emphatic, having overwhelmed their opponents in three Tests, winning each by an innings, Australia won one Test, and the other was drawn.

“It feels pretty special,” said Strauss. “Now we have done it, I think we can give a big sigh of relief and be very proud of what we have achieved, because not many sides have come out here and won.”

Historically, the Ashes date back to 1882, when following a first Australian win in England a British newspaper ran a comedic “obituary” proclaiming the death of cricket - with the body being cremated and the ashes sent to Australia.

The original urn is now displayed in the museum at Lord’s cricket ground in London.

This has been achieved using a new traction control system that is said to be the fastest reacting in the industry and can automatically adapt to different road conditions and driving styles as well as having several manual settings.

The Koenigsegg Agera is as wide at the front as in the rear of the car. This gives very good balance in corners and minimises body roll.

The electronically adjustable rear wing comes with auto setting or manual control, in order to have as little compromise as possible between low drag and down force, depending on situation and mood.

Also the car weighs in at only 1290kg, largely thanks to the carbon fibre/aluminium honeycomb chassis. Koenigsegg have also focused on

integrating the fuel tanks into the chassis for optimal weight distribution and safety.

Driving style E-type Jaguar Nobody could have predicted that nearly 50-years after the birth of the E-Type Jaguar it would still be considered an icon and design classic. When the E-Type Jaguar was first unveiled in Geneva, Switzerland, in March 1961, it was seen as simply the launch of an excellent car, however, almost immediately the car zoomed into history.

On its release Enzo Ferrari called it “The most beautiful car ever made”.

It was heralded as a design sensation by the motoring press of the day even claiming that it outshone every other auto being introduced at the auto show. With its stylish two-seat driving compartment and exaggerated bonnet, it had just the right amount of style to set it apart from the pack.

This was only further enhanced by its beautiful radial wheels that would become a trademark of all subsequent E-Types.

In the “swinging sixties”, the Jaguar E-Type became the must-have driving accessory and joined the elite list of truly sexy cars of the era, a list which included the Aston Martin and Mini Cooper.

By 1974, the last year of production for the E-Type Jaguar, more than 70,000 E-Types had been sold, mainly to the world’s elite. However, despite its worldwide appeal it remained a distinctly British car. The Jaguar was not a sports car just anyone could afford, and even today it still retains its upper class status.

The car remains iconic, elite, and incredibly desirable, even today. In March 2008, the Jaguar E-Type ranked first in Daily Telegraph list of the “100 most beautiful cars” of all time. In 2004, Sports Car International magazine placed the E-Type at number one on their list of Top Sports Cars of the 1960s.

The model was made in three distinct versions – “Series 1”, “Series 2” and “Series 3”. All E-Types featured independent coil spring rear suspension with torsion bar front ends, and four wheel disc brakes, in-board at the rear, all were power-assisted. Jaguar was one of the first auto manufacturers to equip cars with disc brakes as standard from the XK150 in 1958.

This sculpture inspired lamp uses a hand-polished Inconel exhaust system as its feature with gearbox rings as lamp holders.

The gearbox from which the parts of the lamp shown on the right come from, are elements which spin at 18,000rpm and form an integral part of the car’s structure. The main base section which is mounted onto Corian© is part of the final drive unit which supports the remaining shafts and gears.

The coat stand shown on the left, expands on the story of the most important part of a Formula One Car – its wheel.

The base is a partly polished magnesium wheel surrounding a mounted carbon brake disc assembly cradled by a polished calliper with brake pads. Moving up the oiled hardwood shaft there is a matching wheel nut and a hefty polished wheel gun socket used to support the coat pegs. The story is completed with an aluminium wheel nut safety plunger as the top detail.

At only twenty-three, no one can deny the meteoric rise of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. From English school girl to super model and actress, it’s hard to believe that this stunning beauty from Plymouth, Devon has taken both the fashion world and Hollywood by storm.

The effect can be stunning as evening approaches and the cellar is illuminated as lights pinprick the stair treads. More indulgent touches can be added with a step tread inlay, which can include tan or dark brown leather, grey or Chinese slate, wood plank effect, various Amtico colours, rubber or sisal.

Access to the Original Spiral Cellar and the Mini Spiral Cellar is traditionally through a four panel wooden trap door with a flat handle fitted with a gas strut to support the door when it is open. However the Original Spiral Cellar also comes with the option of the rectangular glass door. The traditional door can be made to blend in with the flooring in the room, whether it’s wooden boards or carpet. The natural sisal flooring used on the staircase of the Original Spiral Cellar enhances its elegance and reduces the risk of breakages if any bottles are dropped. The Mini Spiral Cellar has a simple wooden ladder leading from the double trap door.

Pension changes and the Lewis unique solution From 1 October 2012, the government is introducing new legislation, making it compulsory for employers to enrol eligible workers into a Qualifying Workplace Pension Scheme (QWPS) and make contributions to that scheme.

Employers can choose which scheme to use, provided it meets certain criteria. It could be their own scheme, another arrangement or they may choose to enrol their staff into NEST (the National Employment Savings Trust). Employers who do not have a pension scheme in place will need to select one.

Not many billionaires set out with the aim to see themselves drop down the list of the richest people in the world, or to give away 95% of their fortune whilst they are still alive. However, Bill and Melinda Gates are not your average billionaires and they are leading the way in philanthropy through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In developing countries, it focuses on improving people’s health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In America, it seeks to ensure that all people have access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life. Based in Seattle, it’s led by CEO Jeff Raikes and Co-chair William H. Gates Sr., under the direction of Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett.

In 1994, the foundation was formed as the William H. Gates Foundation with an initial stock gift of US$94 million. In 1999, the foundation was renamed the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. After a merger with the Gates Learning Foundation in 2000, Gates gave an additional US$126 million and subsequently, funding grew to US$2 billion.

Bill and Melinda Gates, along with Bono, were named by Time as Persons of the Year 2005 for their charitable work. In 2006, the Foundation won the Prince of Asturias Award for International Co-operation and in 2009, the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development was presented to the Foundation.

As Bill Gates has said; “Melinda and I see our foundation’s key role as investing in innovations that would not otherwise be funded… Warren Buffett put it well in 2006 when he told us, “Don’t just go for safe projects.

2009 was the first year of Bill Gates full-time work as co-chair of the foundation. We can all tell the difference in quality between cheaper and more expensive clothes. We partly depend on the brand label, and we expect more expensive garments to be properly finished inside. Fit for a King Remy Martin’s Louis VIII While a life is counted in years, Louis XIII is enjoyed over centuries. One hundred and fifty years went by between the foundation of the House of Remy Martin in 1724 and the birth of Louis XIII. From 1821, Remy Martin III blended the first reserves of old eaux-de-vie to prepare for the future. His son, Paul-Emile Remy Martin, inherited this know-how and this passion. As the culminating point of a life dedicated to cognac, he created Louis XIII and officially registered the brand name in 1874.

The sensations reveal themselves progressively, from the highest degree of finesse to the perception of supreme opulence, an alchemy which is scrupulously sought in every single eau-de-vie awarded and retained for the blending of Louis XIII.

As the result of four generations of Cellar Masters, Louis XIII is a unique blend of 1,200 eaux-de-vie, all from Grande Champagne, and aged in tiercons, century-old casks made from Limousin oak. Its name pays homage to the King of France, during whose reign the Remy Martin Family settled in the Cognac region. Its iconic decanter is a replica of a metal flask found on the battlefield of Jarnac. Just another reason to believe that Louis XIII is the King of Cognacs.

Touches of roses and iris are dancing with elements of fig, prunes, in turn being sustained harmoniously by layers of sandalwood and honey. Four generations of cell master have succeeded each other to produce these intense aromas that linger on the palate an hour after tasting.

Colour The multiple glints and tones that dance in the light shift between sustained and brilliant golden-yellow to marvellous mahogany highlights that can reveal fiery red notes. The tears that slide slowly down the side of the glass are a sign of the supreme opulence of this nectar.

Bouquet The first nose reveals an incredible richness and intensity delivered by the ‘tiercons’, the extremely rare and historic barrels of Louis XIII. The second impression is made of delicate and floral notes, such as immortelle, provided by the best of the Grande Champagne. The third nose is full, covered by spicy tones, thanks to the century ageing process in 100-year-old Limousin oak barrels.

Aromas A dense celebration of floral notes and candied fruits with hints of spices emerges first. The second sip sees notes of jasmine twirled with nuances of passion fruit, themselves flirting with ginger and nutmeg.

Crystal Decanter Like a piece of jewellery, each decanter is unique. A genuine work of art in crystal, it requires the perfect synchronisation of eleven craftsmen who first blow the crystal, place by hand the characteristic ornaments, and decorate the neck with 24-carat gold. Each decanter is then numbered and is ready to enhance the precious elixir.
