A message from Steve Lauber, Admissions Director

More than typical

We are your typical high school.

One of Lakeside’s main goals is to educate our students, getting them ready for their next chapter in life. We like to think we do a pretty good job of doing that—whether students continue on to a 4-year university, 2-year tech school, the workforce, an apprenticeship or the military.

But we are not just your typical high school. We have a much more important task that sets us apart: encouraging and equipping our students’ faith in Jesus during their four years. On a daily basis our students get

• a better understanding of God’s Word and how it relates directly to their lives.

• Christian counseling and encouragement from teachers that focuses on the assurance that God is the one who brings us true peace.

• the opportunity to bond with friends and teachers who share a common faith.

• teachers as models of Christian living.

As our students face the typical challenges that come along with these high school years, we get to share these hope-filled words from God, “fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).

Pray for our teachers, pray for our students, pray for this ministry at Lakeside. It is your typical high school, and yet it’s anything but—and we like it that way.

The Lakeside Federation includes 33 congregations in southcentral Wisconsin extending north to south from Beaver Dam to Janesville and east to west from Okauchee to Middleton. The Lakeside Lutheran Advantage is published 3x year, distributed free of charge to students, families, future families and friends.

A Fresh Advantage ...focus on freshman teacher advice

When you start high school, it’s easy to have a bunch of worries and think you’re the only one who might have a hard time fitting in or finding your way around school. These friendly faces teach many freshmen classes and have lots of experience helping freshies settle in. Get to know them now so you’ll see a familiar face when you step into the classroom, and check out their tips for navigating your first year.

Jake Ziel (Science, Varsity Baseball, JV Boys Basketball)

☺ Be organized! Keep track of papers, write assignments in your planner, and keep a clean locker. This not only benefits you in high school, but in life after high school.

☺ Get involved! Whether that is through music, sports, clubs, or drama, there are plenty of options. As a freshman, getting involved in something at school right away helps you get to know your classmates and make new friends outside of the normal school setting.

☺ Read a book or two over the summer and you’ll get a jump start on your outside reading requirement.

☺ Put more than one class in a binder so you are not carrying so many around.

☺ Don't be afraid to ask a question or ask for clarification. If you need to know, there are 5 others who are afraid to ask.

☺ Participate in class! You learn more than if you just sit there—plus, you remember material better.

Nate Sievert (PhyEd, JV Girls Bball, Track, Strength & Conditioning)

☺ Get involved in as much as possible. The more you are involved the better high school experience you will have, whether its music, drama, clubs, or sports.

☺ Life "outside the box" is really quite amazing if you are willing to take the first step.

☺ Smile all the time! ☺ Say hi to people in the hallway because you might just make their day.

☺ It's okay to be nervous, and it's okay to ask teachers for help.

☺ Remember that you will have failures and successes, hard times and fun times—but neither define you. You are beautifully created, important and loved. You are a redeemed child of God and nothing that happens in high school will ever change that. God—and your teachers—still love you, even if you can't open your locker!

Spring Break "Dream Vacation"

This time of year, we dream of spring break. Whether it's a trip or a "staycation," almost everyone likes some time away from school or work. For this issue's contest, we'd love to hear about your dream vacation. If you share your dream with us, you could win prizes!

�� Would you fly away for a week, or find fun things to do right around home?

�� Who would go with you? Would you visit someone special at your vacation destination?

�� Are there animals in your dream? Beaches, snow or campfires? What would you do on this dream vacation?

Your dream vacation does not have to be something that your family will actually do during spring break, but it sure could be!

Here's how to enter:

1. In no more than 100 words, describe your dream vacation for spring break. (If you're in K, 1st, or 2nd grade, you can OPT to draw a vacation instead of write.)

2. Send it to us, along with your name, grade, school/city and parent info.

What's in it for you?

We think a little bit of dream journaling is a reward in itself, but Mr. Lauber also wants to give away some goodies! He will choose at least 3 winners, at least one each from K-2, 3-5 and 6-8. One student from each age category with entries will win $200 toward their first semester at LLHS. All winners score gift cards and/or some fun new Warrior Wear.

Open to K–8 students in 2022-23. One entry per student. Submissions must be in by April 1, 2023. Winners will be chosen from among qualifying entries, i.e., a written story of less than 100 words, or, optionally for grades K-2, a drawing. Parents can coach, but it should be the child's idea and writing (or dictating). Warrior gear and/or other prizes worth approx. $10. Grand prize for each age category will be $200 tuition credit for first semester at LLHS, selected for age-appropriate quality of writing and creativity. Winners’ parents will be notified by phone or email before student recognition in the next edition of the magazine. Lakeside is not responsible for misdirected or lost entries. Acceptability of entries will be at the sole discretion of judges. Children of LLHS employees ineligible for prizes. Prizes are not transferable.

We love FAMILY, which is why it’s one of our core values. We want Lakeside to not only be your school, but another home—a place where you find your family. Sometimes we even bring your actual family to you. Take Grandparents Day, or GPD, for short. Every fall we invite grandparents of freshmen and juniors to campus and every spring it’s the soph and senior grands’ turn.
