Director’s Notes

1 Corinthians 12:14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. Creating this year’s stage production has brought twists, humor and a huge dollop of humility. Every year I pray, “Lord, how in the world am I going to pull off this show?” And louder than ever this year His answer was, “YOU are not. WE are.” I am humbled by the people that have eagerly joined Lakeside Theatre’s forces to bring you this show. Off the bat, Mr. Caleb Kasper and his Industrial Arts classes built our set and carriage. Pictured to my right below, Mrs. Leckwee is our backbone as our faculty advisor, and student teacher Mr. Josh Aden just so happens to be an extremely skilled, observant and patient actor. Mr. Gut has been running our mics along with the tech crew. As we were just about to paint our set, Renata Waack, who beautifully paints the sets at Luther Prep, says, “Hey, would you like a set painter?” Rhetorical question, that. By the way, if you are in need of a tree being built like we were, Mr. Allen Strawn and Rena know how! Nancy and Gary Fischer helped with costumes, but when a family emergency struck, what a blessing it is to have “theatre friends” in Deanne McLain and Dom Wrobel to help dig us out of a hole. I also want to mention the generosity of Renee Hundley at The Good Stuff Resale Shop in Lake Mills who helped with some ball gowns, and our wonderful friends of Twice is Nice Resale helped again this year too!

Mr. Springborn and Juan Gulrud continue to provide their musical and vocal talents to the shows, and I cannot emphasize enough how many years I have relied on Brian Braatz to serenade audiences with a live pit orchestra. We cannot forget to appreciate the Lakeside Band, Glen Pufahl and Brett Duwe, for letting us use their space and instruments. The show Cinderella is known for its iconic waltz ... I don’t know how to waltz ... but Al and Rachel Henriquez, the owners of Ready 2 Dance studio in Watertown, graciously offered their decades of dance expertise—and patience—to our cast.

I have heavily relied on student efforts—of Nadia Henriquez for choreography, Clara Grow, who organized ALL the costumes among SO many other things, and Kaelynn Gulczynski and Katie Abel, who tackled props and stage management. Senior John Loest made all the spears and worked on the clock.

The fingerprints of every person who has added to this show are countless, and the generosity has been SO great. Please know that I notice and appreciate the help from all who has given their time, talents, food, patience and donations. THANK YOU for helping us put on this show.

God truly does provide. He even uses trivial things like musicals to prove His grace over and over again. We all face mountains in our lives that seem too much to handle, but every mountain points up. Turn your thoughts and prayers up to Jesus because He cares for you and whatever mountain you are trying to tackle. Kristina

Plot Synopsis

Cinderella is a kind and hopeful young woman who lives with her mean stepmother and two stepsisters. They treat her like a servant and don’t believe she deserves happiness. Even though her life is hard, Cinderella stays gentle and dreams of a better future. Meanwhile, Prince Topher (short for Christopher) is about to become king, but he feels unsure about how to lead and wants to make good decisions for his people. To help him find a bride, the royal court hosts a grand ball and invites all the eligible young women in the kingdom.

Ella wants to go to the ball, but her stepmother refuses to let her attend. After showing kindness to a poor old woman, Cinderella is surprised when the woman reveals herself as her Fairy Godmother. With a wave of magic, she gives Cinderella a beautiful gown, glass slippers, and a sparkling carriage to take her to the ball. Cinderella goes, dances with the Prince, and makes a big impression. But at midnight, the magic fades, and she runs away, accidentally leaving behind one of her glass slippers.

In Act 2, Prince Topher is determined to find the mysterious girl he danced with. He searches the kingdom with the lost slipper. Cinderella, meanwhile, begins to believe she can not only change her own life, but help improve the kingdom as well. She’s inspired by Jean-Michel, a kind young man who wants justice and fairness for the people. When Cinderella and the Prince meet again, she helps him see what’s really happening in the kingdom and encourages him to become a thoughtful and caring ruler. The slipper fits her perfectly, and they realize they’re meant to be together. In the end, Cinderella and the Prince fall in love and plan to rule the kingdom with kindness and justice. Even her stepsister changes her ways, and everyone gets a chance at a better life.

Jeremiah Borgwardt

grade 12

St. Luke, Watertown

Lord Pinkleton

This will be my second show. During sophomore year I performed in Newsies. I was in the chorus and I also had the roles of the mayor and a police officer too. The show has been a blast to put together, but aside from the musical I also played varsity soccer last fall and participated in intramural basketball. In my free time (which hasn’t been existent since musical rehearsals started) I enjoy listening to music, playing video games, and improving my photography skills! After graduating this year I will be attending WCTC and going into their Interior Design program.

Caroline Braatz

grade 9

Holy Cross, Madison horse, villager, ball guest

I have been dreaming of being in a Lakeside production since 6th grade. I was so excited to hear I actually made it in the show this year because it had been a dream for so long. The last time I was in a show it was in the second grade. Through this show I have met some of the nicest people and the funniest people. I am involved in color guard and am really looking forward to going on the summer band trip with all of my friends. I love theater so much and there are so many great experiences that I will never forget

Nico Caminata

grade 10

St.Matthew, Janesville knight, villager, ball guest

This will be my third performance here. I enjoy a wide range of activities like playing piano, inventing, experimenting, tree climbing, acting, reading, playing games, speaking, training (fighting), debating, and many outdoor activities. I love storms and horrible/epic weather and I enjoy classical music (but not limited to only classical). My favorite performance here was Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures.

Maya Damm

grade 9

Door Creek, DeForest Fox puppeteer, villager, ball guest

I have always loved performing and being a part of community theater productions with Sun Prairie Civic Theatre, some of my favorite roles being Spider in James and the Giant Peach Jr., Cinderella in Cinderella: Youth Edition, and Rusty in Footloose: Youth Edition! I have really enjoyed the opportunity to do theater in a new setting with so many amazing people! Outside of school, I enjoy reading, writing, and spending time with friends. I also love being a part of Forensics, Student Council, and other activities here. I would like to thank Clara for letting me wear a pretty ball gown, my parents for always supporting me, and my friends for driving all this way to see me!

grade 12

St. John, Jefferson townsperson, ball guest

I am excited to say I’m part of this incredible show. I have been in three previous shows: Newsies, HighSchool Musical, and Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventure. I’ve had so much fun being a part of theater and watching others grow along the way! I have made some amazing friends and memories throughout the years. Some I never would have met if I hadn’t joined. Theater isn’t the only thing I do, I like to hang out with friends, go thrifting, watch rom-coms, and be around family. Next year I plan to attend MLC to study elementary education and plan to participate in theater there.

Royce Florczak

grade 9

Divine Redeemer, Hartland knight, villager, ball guest

I am blessed to be performing in my ninth show. Previous theater credits include Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures, Peter Pan Jr., A Mother Goose Fairy Tale, Junie B. Jones Jr.,TheSoundofMusic,ChannelingGrimm, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer Jr. and The Wizard of Oz. I am a bit shy, but have a giant imagination. Being involved in theater has really helped me come out of my shell. I have made some really great friends and memories along the way. I have learned so much from the directors and cast. Outside of theater, I swim year-round on a club swim team, go WAT. I also enjoy art, music, the outdoors, hiking, travel, and hanging out with my friends. I want to thank Kristina and Mr. Springborn for all their support and this opportunity.

grade 10

Bethany, Fort Atkinson knight, villager, ball guest

This is the second theater production I have been in, and I think it is even better than the last. I like theater because of all the singing and dancing and really cool music. I also like being able to hang out with my friends everyday and sitting on the gym floor and watching Gilmore Girls. Some things I like to do are playing music (I play guitar, bass, flute, piano, and the air drums) , running, weightlifting, working at Culver’s, eating Culver’s. I hope to be a teacher and do something with music. I may not be the best at the things that I do, but I love the things I do.

Jackson Gleesing

grade 10

St. Paul, Lake Mills Jean-Michel

Hello everyone! This is my fourth show, including Rainbow Fish, HighSchoolMusical, and Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures. I have also been in about 14 shows outside of Lakeside, including Frozen, LionKing,Annie,TheLittleMermaid, Shrek, and Suessical. My life is mostly centered around music and acting as I’m also in Summer Marching Band, Jazz Band, Cantate Choir, and Forensics. This cast was amazing and it’s sad to see so many of them go after this year, but the memories I will have will never go away. Cheer loud and have fun!

grade 12

St. Andrew, Middleton ensemble, dance cocaptain, choreography

This is my sixth show; I have previously been in School of Rock, Newsies, Rainbow Fish, HighSchoolMusical, and Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures. My favorite part about working on this show was learning how to Viennese waltz. Some of my hobbies include dancing, painting, reading, and baking. Next year I will be attending UW-Stevens Point majoring in Theatre Design and Technology. Watch out for flying footwear and enjoy the show!

grade 10

St. Paul, Lake Mills townsperson, horse, ball guest

This is my fourth play/musical. I have been in Rainbow Fish, HighSchoolMusical, and Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures. I am a lifeguard at River Bend in Watertown and am very good at dealing with injuries. When people get hurt, I’m right there to help them. I also am a barrel racer, and, if some people are wondering, the horse’s name is Rio. I don’t compete competitively yet, but I still love riding my horses anywhere. Theater is probably the best place to be when you’re going through a really hard time. The people are very supportive, and just fun in general. Your cast members can become like family to you. I’d recommend theater 100%. Plus Kristina is so amazing and makes it so amazing. For those who want to do theater, do it. It’s worth it.

grade 12

St. Paul, Lake Mills Charlotte

This is my second show, my first being HighSchoolMusical last year. Playing Charlotte has been such an amazing experience, and has taught me more than I can imagine—and I have no imagination! Participating in theater was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Not only am I involved with theater, but also with the A Cappella Choir and Swing Choir. As cliche as it sounds, I am my happiest self when performing and participating in these things brings me so much joy. Although I have no idea what I want to do next year, I know theater will be part of it.

Skyler Holz

grade 9

St. Luke, Watertown knight, villager, partygoer

There are a lot of hobbies, and I certainly have a lot of them. I have some that shine out as favorites, like reading, storytelling, and cooking. Of course, the one that shines out to me as the best of the best is theater. There are so many different parts and pieces in the world of theater, and one of the best parts is the people. I’ve been in two other shows, but I’m new to this cast. They are the best people I’ve worked with yet. I greatly appreciate the rest of the cast, the tech people, the set painters, the set movers, the choreographers, and our director. Everyone involved really shines and I am glad to spread God’s glory with them.

grade 11

Immanuel, Farmington old lady, raccoon

Hola! This is my third spring show, and I couldn’t be happier to be in a show with these amazing people. I love to perform, act, and do silly dances with my friends for everyone willing to watch. I love watching movies, sewing, drawing, working out, and all that jazz. I don’t plan on pursuing theater as a career, but I wouldn’t have done anything else with my time. Theater has taught me so much about my creativity, confidence, and all the talents I was too afraid to show. I am excited, but also sad that I only have one more year to perform with these people, and I can’t wait to see what next year brings. I’m not here to show you the best show you’ve ever seen, but I am here to show you the talents of me, my friends, and our version of Cinderella.

Nadia Henriquez

grade 12

St. Luke, Watertown

duchess, dance cocaptain, choreography

This show has been such an incredible way to finish off senior year! I’ve performed in School of Rock, Newsies, and High School Musical. Alongside theater, I’ve been active in Cross Country, track, band, A Cappella, Swing Choir, Dance, and Color Guard. I have also served as a Student Council member, officer for Teens for Christ, choreographer for dances and shows, and captain of both Dance and Color Guard. Outside of school, I like baking, playing board games, or hanging out with friends. Being involved in Lakeside’s

theater department has been such an amazing experience and helped me grow in confidence, build lifelong friendships, and find new ways to express myself. I’ll truly miss this amazing group of people who have become some of my closest friends! A special thank you to Kristina and everyone who made this show possible. I’m beyond grateful for this experience!

Isabel Kuchta grade 12

Eastside, Madison Cinderella

This is my fourth and final high school production. I was in School of Rock, Newsies, HighSchoolMusical, and this year, I am Cinderella! I have been involved in many school activities. I run cross country, sing in A Cappella and Swing Choir, write articles for the newspaper, play the flute in band, and am the editor of this year’s yearbook. I loved rehearsing and preparing for this musical! This is my first year with a lead role, and it has been challenging but also extremely rewarding and fun. I have made so many wonderful, lifelong friends because of theater. Next year, I will attend Martin Luther College, majoring in elementary education, and I plan to be involved in their musical productions. I am so thankful for this experience, and I will always keep the memories close to me.

Lucy Kuchta

grade 10

Eastside, Madison Swing for Cinderella and Gabrielle, ensemble

Hey guys! This is my first year in the musical, and it has been an amazing experience. I love singing and the musical has been a great way to be able to use my talents to glorify God. However, I have so many other talents and hobbies such as track and field, color guard, wrestling, and making jewelry. I am so glad I was able to make the necklaces for the stepmother and sisters because I think that jewelry making is a skill that can be overlooked. The opportunities I have been given have made me a better person, and have allowed me to get closer with all of my new and old friends. I am so proud of how we are all able to work together to perform. I am going to miss all of our seniors, especially my sister Isabel, but I am so glad to be in their last performance with them.

Last year my sister pushed me to try out for the musical since I couldn’t play volleyball due to knee surgery. Ever since then it’s become one of my favorite things. The people, music, and Kristina of course have made some of my best memories. Because of doing the musical last year I got involved in A Cappella and Forensics. Outside of theater I love playing volleyball, weightlifting, cooking, and painting. I am going to Wisconsin Lutheran College next year to play volleyball and study Biology.

I am incredibly proud of this year’s cast–they’ve truly made my final show something unforgettable. In the past, I’ve had the joy of playing Specs in Newsies, Pufferfish in The Rainbow Fish, various ensemble characters in High School Musical, and Moley in Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures. I’m forever grateful to Kristina and my amazing castmates for their endless support and love. Lakeside theater will always hold a special place in my heart and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of this production.

Hey everyone! I am so blessed to have been part of theater for as long as I have, the atmosphere is so amazing and I love to perform. You might notice me from A Cappella Choir visiting your church or from the Lakeside Loop, be sure to tune in next year. As this is my senior year this is my last show, however, I plan on using the skills Kristina has taught me and the others I’ve picked up to shine at Bethany Lutheran College in their theater program, speech team, and mock trial team. Thank you for all the support you’ve given to the Lakeside Theater Department. It means the world to us!

Eli McCrary grade 11

This is the fourth show I have been a part of. Last year I started my high school drama career by doing tech in Rainbow Fish, I then tried out for High School Musical and got in! This year I have already acted in our fall play, and am looking forward to being part of theater next year. I am also in jazz, concert, and summer band as well as A Cappella Choir! After next year I plan on going to MLC on pastor track and later the seminary.

Elizabeth Mellon grade 11 | Our Redeemer, Madison | Swing for Cinderella and Gabrielle, ensemble

I am so glad I had the opportunity to connect with all of the people in this musical. The reason I continue to do theater is because of the friends I have made throughout the productions. During my free time, I enjoy playing the piano, sleeping, and spending time with my family. One of my other passions is playing soccer. I’m very thankful for everyone who has supported me throughout my theater career!

Hello, theater-goers! I am blessed to be performing in my sixth and final high school theater production. You may recognize me from other musicals (School of Rock, Newsies,HighSchoolMusical) or children’s productions (Rainbow Fish, Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures). I am also involved in other musical endeavors, such as A Cappella Choir, Swing Choir, Concert Band, Jazz Band and Marching Band. I promise, I do sleep on occasion. After this year, I plan to attend the University of Alabama to study Psychology, hoping to get my Master’s degree in 5 years. This year has provided a lot of new learning opportunities! I learned to ballroom dance and, more impressively, survived doing a show in ballroom dancing shoes. This cast, crew, and pit is amazing to work with, and deserve all the credit in the world. Special thanks to Mr. Aden for helping us out during his student teaching! Thanks for coming—and Roll Tide!

grade 11

Zion, Columbus villager girl

Hi there :) This is my third year participating in theater. I have previously been in Newsies, Rainbow Fish, and High School Musical. Theater has been my life throughout the past three years and it is where most of my closest friends are (and also Kristina, love her). I absolutely love everything music. I am in A Cappella Choir and plan to be in Swing Choir next year. Some of my hobbies include singing, dancing, snowboarding, playing piano and guitar, and hanging out with my friends any time I can. I would encourage people to give theater a try because even if you figure out it’s not for you, the memories you make and the friendships you create are some of the best.

grade 10

Holy Cross, Madison smaller girl, villager, ball guest

Being in theater has brought me so many more blessings than I could’ve imagined. I was in HighSchool Musical and Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures. In those shows I have met so many of my best friends. Being a part of these productions has given me the confidence that I lacked before. I really feel like I am in an environment where I can fully show up as myself and be accepted. Outside of theater I still love to surround myself with music. I am in Cantate Choir and I spend most of my free time listening to music. The memories I have from performing are ones I will love forever, thanks to Kristina and my castmates!

Haylie Reese

grade 11

St. Peter, Helenville villager, ball guest, horse

Hey, y’all! Since performing in my first musical last year, I’ve fallen in love with theater and could not be more excited for this show. Not only did I appear in the play this past fall, but I am also a first soprano in A Cappella Choir. On a typical day, I can be seen with copious amounts of glitter on my face and a Celsius in my hand. I spend my free time listening to music (mainly punk rock and theater soundtracks), watching Criminal Minds, and practicing my drawing every now and again. While my everyday wardrobe consists of black, flannels, eyeliner, and combat boots, to be honest, the thing I’m most excited to do in this show is spin around in a pretty dress and sing my heart out. I mean, come on, who doesn’t LOVE a masquerade ball?!?!

Jack Rupnow

grade 11

St. Paul’s, Ixonia knight, townsperson, ball guest

When I started this semester I had no intentions of being in theater, but the day before auditions I decided to try out—and it was definitely a good choice. If future plays are as much fun as this one it will definitely be a hard decision to choose between sports or theater next year. In my free time, I enjoy playing video games and reading. Have fun and enjoy the show!

Noah Schneider

grade 9

St. John, Milton knight, villager, ball guest, banquet guest

I am involved in choir, math track, student council, and soccer, but most of all I love to play piano and bike.

So what about theatre? I got into theatre because I have always loved all things music and have always liked the idea of acting. Although I came into tryouts not expecting too much since it was my first formal production and I am a freshman, the casting directors saw my potential and I was brought into my first high school production. Although it’s been a long three months of rehearsals, we’re excited to show you the results! I’d also encourage anyone who has been thinking about getting involved in theatre to come try it out! It’s a ball!

Anna Schwalenberg

grade 9

St. Paul, Ixonia townsperson, ball guest

Theatre is not something I thought I would ever do, but I’m really glad I decided to get involved! I was in grade school productions, but this is my first actual big show! I think theatre is a great thing to be in, whether you want to be part of the cast or work behind the scenes. Some of my other hobbies are playing piano and flute, writing, and spending time outside with my dog. Thank you to everyone who helped make this show a success!

grade 11

St. Paul, Lake Mills knight, peasant, ball guest, official

This is my second spring show that I have done with the other being HighSchoolMusical. I was born and raised in Janesville but recently moved closer to Jefferson. I absolutely love acting, and theater is a great way for me to do that. My other likes include music, I am involved with A Cappella Choir and Swing Choir, which is a blast. I would not be in the position I am today if it weren’t for theater. Everyone that has worked on this means so much to me and it is amazing to say that I am a part of it all. It means a lot to me.

Katelyn Starkenburg

Grade 10

Holy Cross, Madison townsperson, ball and banquet guest, peasant

I love theatre, and I’ve been in many community shows over the past few years. This is my third show here, following HighSchoolMusical and Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures. Being in theatre has been a huge blessing! I’ve met some of my best friends and it’s been my favorite part of high school by far. The cast has really become a family. This show has come with some new experiences, from puppetry to ballroom dancing with Mrs. Henriquez, which has been really fun. Some of my other hobbies include reading, dancing, listening to music, playing piano, and sleeping.

grade 9

Calvary Lutheran Chapel, Madison horse, young girl

Born and raised for 14 years in Nebraska, I never expected to ever move to any other place, especially not Wisconsin; however, despite my apprehension, it turned out to be a blessing from God. I’ve been in many amateur shows in my life, and I’ve enjoyed every single one of them; my first actual show, and my first show at Lakeside, was Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures, and my experience with the cast and crew was the best. My life has been forever changed, in the best way possible, and I’m extremely grateful for the amazing opportunities that I have been given at Lakeside.

This is my sixth show, and my second one here. The other four were at my previous school. I very much enjoy acting, no matter how good at it I am. I partake in A Cappella Choir and play clarinet in band, and very much enjoy making music. I always have fun making people happy and making people laugh with my terrible dad jokes. I enjoy being outside when it is nice and enjoying God’s creation, along with helping my friends and family. Theater is one of my favorite things and I have made some very great memories while on stage.

grade 12

Trinity, Watertown Gabrielle

This is my 13th musical. My favorite show is School of Rock my freshman year. My character this year is very different from the usual role that I play and I am having so much fun with it. I love that this year I have funny lines built into my character! I also had a lot of fun creating costumes for Heidi. It took a lot of hard work and extra time, but I think it was totally worth it!

In addition to theater I am involved in A Cappella, Swing Choir, and Dance. Next year I will study Early Childhood Education and Special Education at UW-Oshkosh. I plan to tryout for dance at Oshkosh and possibly theater. I can’t believe I have to say goodbye to theater and these people. I will miss it so much but I am so thankful to be a part of it. Thank you so much, Kristina, for everything! We love you so much.

grade 10

Zion, Columbus villager, ball guest

This is my first-ever show and it has been great working with all these amazing people. I have made so many new friends, including some seniors that will be missed greatly next year. I absolutely love to sing and dance, so I thought theatre would obviously be the next step! I am also involved in other artistic programs such as Choir and the Dance Team.

grade 12

St. Paul, Lake Mills Sebastian

My senior show and, man, has it been a wild ride. I’m involved in A Cappella and Swing Choir, I have previously participated in both football and track, and I have been in every production since sophomore year when I did my first show, Newsies. Newsies got me to fall in love, not just with the activities of theater, but with the family I have here. I will always be thankful to the friends I’ve made, the graduates who’ve helped me grow, and my director, Kristina. I’m having a difficult time describing it to you now, but that’s probably because I’m writing this bio at 4 a.m. the day it’s due. I’ll miss this, but I’m off to new adventures in UW-Stevens Point! Thank you all, and I’ll see you later!

grade 11

St. Paul, Fort Atkinson Stage manager

Stage-managing is harder than I thought. Just move a few props and it’ll be fine, right? Wrong. It takes so much to put on a show, giving me new appreciation for behind the scenes. After High School Musical last year, I’ve taken a backstage role as I did for Newsies, Rainbow Fish, and Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures. I love singing in A Cappella Choir, watching movies, studying Italian, and spending time with family & those close to me. Walks with my dog, Thor, always brightens my day. I’ve had so much fun watching the cast grow and learn, especially with dancing. Thanks to Kristina, Mr. and Mrs. Henriquez, and all stage helpers because there’d be no show without them!

grade 10

Trinity, Watertown Footman, raccoon, knight, Swing for Topher

It all started with the three little pigs and the big bad wolf. The first time I fell in love with acting—a Kindergarten theatre performance. Since then, I have been in 6+ shows, and I love acting. I love the thrill and excitement. This show has been a lot of fun, and it has been an awesome past couple months. Besides my love for theatre, I also share a strong passion for sports! I am in soccer and intramural basketball. In this musical, I get to show off some of my athletic side with some fun tricks! Some of my closest friends are in this cast. So, kids out there, do theatre; it is so so so worth it!!

Kaelynn Gulczynski

grade 12

St. Paul, Lake Mills Stage Manager, ensemble

My seventh show! School of Rock, Newsies, RainbowFish,High School Musical, and I stage managed Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures. I’m in A Cappella, Swing Choir, concert and summer band. This year I helped lead Girl’s Wrestling Club, preparing girls for a team next year! Next fall I plan to study at Edgewood College to become a child life specialist. Theater has been a huge part of my life and has taught me so many valuable lessons like leadership and teamwork. I encourage everyone to try theater because there are so many talents and abilities needed to put on amazing shows.
