PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

HI WHITNEY KEY CLUB! I hope you are all doing well, especially amidst all the stress, cramming, and brain-frying during AP season. While some of the AP Exams may have been challenging or unexpectedly difficult, don’t sweat it; you tried your best, and that is what matters. For those of you who still have AP Exams coming up, I wish you all the best of luck and sanity! Comps are also coming up pretty soon, so I hope you are all taking care of yourselves and hanging in there (remember, we only have a couple more weeks until summer). In terms of Key Club events, in April, we’ve been hard at work as we get ready to send off our seniors and close off the school year strong with our Service Month (as always) and fundraisers, including our Chipotle Fundraiser. Not only that, but we held a successful joint clothing drive with Threaded and a self-watering planter activity with Eco Club in honor of Earth Week. Because of YOUR bee-utiful efforts, we were able to serve a total of 922.5 hours and raise $100 for MNT, which is absolutely incredible, given the ongoing virtual setting. Thank you all so much for pushing yourself every month to serve more and more; you are all such superstars! I would also like to give a HUGE shoutout to our wonderful Whitney Key Clubbers who made it onto DLT: Division News Editor Michelle Kim, Fundraising Coordinator Anika Kasula, Spirit Coordinator Jasmine Tai, Publicity Coordinator Itzel Huerta, Executive Assistant Sania Usmani, Service Projects Coordinator Ashlyn Wong, and Spirit Gear Coordinator Saadhvi Narayanan. I am so proud of each and every one of you, and I know for certain that you are all more than capable of taking our division to even higher heights! In the meantime, stay on the lookout for more exciting events (including a New Member Orientation in the works) and BEE sure to participate in our Service Month and Sun Plushie Fundraiser! If you know any incoming freshmen (current 8th graders/class of 2025) who are interested in getting involved in Key Club to make a tangible difference in our communities, don’t be afraid to reach shining with service, out! Incoming freshmen are more than welcome to start volunteering during the summer!

May DCM, one unlike all others. Usually filled with fun and joy, but this one especially filled with stress. In the midst of the AP and final exam season, our minds were all filled with unlimited amounts of vocab, events, and new languages. However, this DCM gave us an opportunity to unwind and to de-stress for 2 hours.

general session

The start of the DCM was like all others, introducing a new service week ending on May 29rd (make sure to check out the D30S Instagram for more details), upcoming fundraisers, and ultimately introducing D30S’s new Youtube channel where they will be uploading DCM recaps and other exciting videos and announcements. With the old and new business out of the way, it was time for the monthly recognition. As for Gretchen Whitney, a huge shout out to Itzel Heurta for receiving the DLT officer of the month with her outstanding graphics and publicity skills. Along with this, our club, Whitney Key Club, received 2nd shining club of the month with our continual service input and fundraising success. As a result, we wanted to say a huge congratulations to all the Whitney key clubbers because without your dedication, this would not have come into fruition.

breakout rooms

With the end of the general session, it was now time for break out rooms. There were rooms for everyone, a quiet room for those still with finals and AP exams, a karaoke room for our singers, a game room for all our gamers, and lastly a service and movie room for all those who love Barry the Bee. However, all these rooms were filled with the spirit of hopes for the upcoming summer.

With less than a week of school left, hang in there and we will get through this school year strong. I wish you all the best on any finals or AP exams that are to come. See you all at June DCM!

Jerrick Wu | ’21-’22 Secretary

It’s almost summer! So in preparation, May DCM: De-Stress into Summer happened on May 22nd from 3-5PM. This DCM was all about finishing off the school year, socializing with others, and service! The DCM started with everybody joining the meeting to music and a summer-y themed presentation, along with similar, bright backgrounds. Christina, our LTG, opened the meeting with the new DLT, many being from our club. We did the usual Pledge of Allegiance and Key Club Pledge, followed by old business! We went over the past DCM (and the Kiwanis one) and our new Youtube (which you should subscribe to!). Key Clubbers shared their experiences for everyone to listen to. As for new business, there was much to find out about! The service project coordinators are looking for new service ideas, and we are having a service week from May 23-29. Some other things that were mentioned was information about the May Kiwanis DCM, our upcoming social with a few other divisions, and Officer Training Conference! All are such big events, so hopefully many of you can attend as well! Along with these, there are also many fundraisers that were being publicized from different schools. One of them was our sun plushie fundraiser, which you should definitely support if you’re interested! After news about old and new business were discussed, we went into recognition. Itzel Huerta from our home club was recognized as DLT officer of the month, which is amazing! Our club was also recognized as 2nd Shining Club of the Month, YAY US! Sania, one of the executive assistants, took roll from each school, and it felt like when we were at in-person meetings. It was nice to hear something that we are used to, and I hope we can all be together soon. Once the DCM ended, we all went into breakout rooms. There was one for service/ watching a movie, karaoke, social/game room, and a quiet (study) room. For me, I went into the quiet room since I do have a few tests coming up. Many people went in there to prepare for their upcoming AP exams. It was a nice and chill environment, along with Lofi music playing in the background (courtesy of Michelle). I am sure the other rooms were lots of fun as well, as who wouldn’t want to bond with other members, perform service, or sing catchy songs? I had a great time at this DCM, and I know many others did too! If you have not been to a DCM before, this was just a description of what happened, and hopefully it will convince you to want to go to the next one. DCMs are a huge part of Key Club, and going to them to find out what is going on is important. So, with that being said, see you at June DCM!

Alanna Chan | ’21-’22 Director of Kiwanis and Member Relations

LOOKING FORWARD

What’s up Whitney Key Club! I hope you are staying safe and healthy as the school year comes to an end! As we continue into this brand new Key Club term over the summer, here’s a few things you can look forward to, especially those who were unable to experience in-person Key Club events previously!

1 2 3 4

international summer leadership conference

ICON, or SLC, is happening virtually this year and is the first event coming up! I was able to attend this event virtually last year and it was a really cool experience to be able to see Key Clubbers not only from our district, but also from all over the world! This is a great experience for anyone interested, because you can learn from a variety of different workshops and find out how other Key Clubs from different areas work in comparison.

region training conference

Next on the list is RTC, which usually occurs with October DCM. Our region, also known as “Rainbow Region 3” is made up of seven different divisions in our area. At the Region Training Conference, fellow members and officers speak on their experiences in Key Club, giving a range of advice and information in several workshops that you choose to attend! Mostly incoming and returning Key Clubbers are encouraged to attend because they are able to learn more about our club as soon as they join after Club Rush.

fall rally south and spirit nights

Personally, I haven’t been to FRS or any of our spirit nights but it is an infamous experience for Key Clubbers in Southern California! On this special day, members and officers gather from across Socal to meet at Six Flags and have fun! The spirit nights are also planned for the entire division to prepare for the spirit competition at Fall Rally to win a spirit stick! Our very own Division 30 South has held the spirit stick for the two terms before the last, where it had been cancelled due to the pandemic. This is an important event in Key Club because it serves as a reminder that there are more benefits to joining our club than just service!

rose float decorating

Rose Float Decorating is an annual event that I was personally able to attend during my freshman year! It was a really interesting and fun experience because we had to wake up early to go to the warehouse and help decorate the floats for 8 hours. Here, we were also able to meet other Key Clubbers and volunteers who were separated into doing a variety of jobs, including preparing and cutting the flowers or placing the flowers on the floats!

Ashlyn Wong | ’21-’22 Historian/Tech Editor

conclave

lock-in

Conclave occurs with December DCM and is one of the most important DCMs of the term. This is where the Lieutenant Governors for each division in our region come together to meet their new LTGs for the upcoming term! Those who are running for the position of Lieutenant Governor give their speeches and hold caucus for the delegates to vote and choose their new LTG!

As a lot of you know already, Whitney Key Club is also known for our Lock-in event every year! We hold 12 consecutive hours worth of service and bonding, which helps bring our members together, and we are able to raise money for the Pediatric Trauma Program at the same time! Although it can sound exhausting, the delightful spirit of Key Club and serving gives you more than enough reason to attend.

7

OPERATiON CHRiSTMAS

8

DISTRICT CONVENTION

Operation Christmas is an event exclusive to Whitney Key Club, where we spread the holiday giving cheer all around campus! Our goal is to raise money in our homerooms as well as food donations, in order to adopt families via the Salvation Army to help give them a comfortable and enjoyable holiday! Students are elected as homeroom representatives to collect donations and help out with buying hand-picked gifts for each assigned family.

Lastly, the California-Nevada-Hawaii Key Club District usually hosts its DCON during April, which is one of our biggest events! Key Clubbers from all over these three states come together to attend workshops and meet new people! Though it was postponed and held online last year, DCON occurs over a span of three days and either occurs in Reno, Nevada or Ontario, California, which makes for an exciting trip! This planning happens starting from the very beginning of the term, as many awards are given to members, officers, clubs themselves, and even divisions for recognition in several departments. Last year, Whitney received the Single Service and Major Emphasis awards, as well as Diamond Distinguished Club and many more!

MAY

general meeting

Steven Cao has two soulmates, Ashlyn Wong and Lizzy Hoang switched bodies, and Whitney Key Club has a kink for Ed Sheeran…? Yup, you heard that right! On May 11, Whitney Key Club held our monthly May General Meeting during lunch over Zoom, featuring a wide variety of announcements and exciting activities. If you were unable to make it, no worries; here is a recap of everything that went down:

iCEBREAKER In this classic game of Soulmate (led by Spirit Chair Leia Ogawa), two lucky contestants were able to discover their soulmate! By asking a series of this-orthat questions, Steven Cao found that his fated soulmate was Jay Parikh Patel, while Charvi Irava was paired with Steven Cao—but wait, if Steven has two soulmates, wouldn’t that mean Charvi and Jay are soulmates too by the transitive property? You’re right. Shh…

TEAM SLIDES

OLD, NEW, & ONGOiNG BUSiNESS

During the meeting, we covered the details of past, present, and upcoming events ranging from April DCM to the Sun Plushie Fundraiser to the April Newsletter (if you haven’t seen it yet, drop everything and READ IT NOW)! For more information regarding these events, check out the Whitney Key Club Google Group (emails), where you can read in detail about each project.

Following the announcements section of our general meeting, we moved onto creating “team slides” aka decorated Google Slides that were representative of our respective teams. These team slides were quite interesting; while some people pledged their eternal love for Sania Usmani, others opted for potatoes, Elmo from Sesame Street, embarrassing pictures of people, or fiery Avatar: The Last Airbender characters. What a blast!

GAME TiME

Soon after the lovely slides were implemented into our virtual backgrounds, it was time for our competition amongst the teams to see who would bring home the winning title. We played “Guess That Song!” and “Key Club Trivia,” all of which was very fun and engaging. Shoutout to everyone who participated and to the winning team “The Usmanis”!

To those of you who came to our May General Meeting, we hope you enjoyed it! Can’t wait to see you all again at our next one, where we will have even greater things in store. Keep up the great work Whitney Key Club and never let anyone or anything dull your sparkle!

what is the

This year, due to the pandemic, it is even harder to help fundraise for those in need, especially young children suffering pediatric trauma. So what is the Pediatric Trauma Program, and how can we help?

what is pediatric trauma Pediatric trauma, the leading cause of death in children and young infants, occurs when a child or infant experiences a severe injury. Depending on the injury, a child may be forced to endure mental and physical disabilities. After experiencing this children are said to only have a 25% chance of survival after experiencing trauma. Doctors fear to confront Pediatric Trauma, for it may not even be able to be cured. Within the past year, over 175,000 children have experienced pediatric trauma from injuries and over 9,000 were killed. This balances to the rate of 1 child taken for every hour.

what is the problem Recent graphs and studies show that the fight to stop pediatric trauma is poorly supported. Within just the United States, only 39 pediatric trauma hospitals exist. Adding to this, pediatric trauma research receives 18 cents from the federal government. This, once again, is small compared to the 17 dollars cancer research receives. Without the financial support, there is no way to provide the medical support needed for the young children to recover, such as scans, treatment, and more.

how can you help We may not be able to physically save lives in a hospital, but we can help aid in research by donating. Donating to organizations that support the Pediatric Trauma, such as the Pediatric Trauma Program, can assist the children. This money goes toward building hospitals and funding research. One can also prevent accidents by practicing general safety rules, such as wearing helmets during bike rides, walking on the crosswalks and keeping off the road, and even alerting others when their safety is jeopardized.

QUESTIONS for our GRADUATES

As the 2020-2021 school year comes to a close, our 2021 seniors will be moving onto new chapters in their lives and we will miss them immensely. With that being said, let’s ask some of our bee-utiful seniors about some of their own takeaways from their time as Key Clubbers! WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE KEY CLUB EXPERIENCE?

WHAT DID YOU TAKE AWAY FROM KEY CLUB?

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SEE FOR THE FUTURE OF KEY CLUB?

maya alvarez - harmon My favorite key club experience was Fall Rally South 2019! Everyone really showed up and showed out and of course WE GOT THAT SPIRIT STICK for a second year in a row!! I truly learned that there is a world outside of ourselves. Whether that be through being there for our community or integrating ourselves into the Key Club family, we all have a purpose. I want to see more individuals gain a true passion for community involvement. There is no better time investment than in one’s community.

ayaan ekram My favorite Key Club experience was my first District Convention where I learned the true expanse of the club and met some of the most dedicated and passionate people. Key Club taught me about leadership, responsibility, service, kindness, and corporation. It also taught me about the importance of friendship. I hope to see Whitney Key Club grow in the future. It is already an amazing and successful club but I know it can become even more influential and impactful along with being a place for all to fit in.

anastacia estrella My favorite Key Club experience would be Fall Rally because i was able to meet so many new people and connect with other members from our division and like all of our hard work paid off because we were able to win the spirit stick! Key Club taught me to go out there and try new things, if i never went out to key club events i would’ve never made the friends i did! I hope to see in person events and that everyone gets to experience the real key club!

ethan hong My favorite Key Club experience is attending District Convention! There is something very special about meeting Key Clubbers from faraway places, and discovering that you both share the same love for service and leadership. One takeaway I have is that helping others goes a long way. One good deed may be a small part of your day, but can mean everything to someone else. I hope to see more student interest in community service, so I hope Key Club can gain more members in the future!

elu loquias My favorite Key Club experience was planning and leading Fall Rally South with the other spirit coordinators! After involving myself in Key Club, I’ve learned to become a better leader, speaker, and overall making new connections with people all across the district. I would love to see Key Club continue to make impactful changes, involve themselves in charities that need immediate attention, and continue to create passionate and caring leaders!

Leia Ogawa | ’21-’22 Spirit Coordinator

ENDING THE SCHOOL YEAR

on a HIGH NOTE

What’s poppin’ Whitney Key Club! This school year is about to come to its wraps, and that means there will be so much more time to become even more involved within Key Club. As AP tests are concluding and finals starting very soon, homework and schoolwork will be the furthest thing from your mind. This means that there will be so much more time for you all to immerse yourself in the wonders of Key Club and volunteering.

Although in-person volunteering activities haven’t started yet, we are planning a variety of activities that you all will enjoy. As well as our monthly service months, there will be new club and division socials where you will meet new people, division service weeks, new and interactive fundraisers, and so much more! The DOA’s are also working on new projects where you all will be able to participate in new kinds of service with different clubs a part of Whitney. We know online service events can get repetitive, so new interactive activities with different clubs would allow us to meet new people on campus and participate in service in a new way. Even though we are all still stuck in our bedrooms, Key Club will allow us to make an impact on not only those at our school but the people that are a part of our community.

As this month is coming to its end, I would love to inspire you all to start making a difference over this summer. For those of you who want to make a difference and don’t know how, just start small and slowly. Key Club can be overwhelming at first with the variety of activities, but once you get a hang of it, you’ll develop an amazing passion for helping people. These online service events can truly make a difference to so many people on a community and even national level, and you can be the reason for someone’s smile. Bringing joy to the others around us truly brings us happiness, and I strongly recommend you all to start volunteering this summer. For any of you who are hesitant, I urge you to try just by starting off with a few service events with your friends or attending your first general meeting since there will be something that you will find a liking for. Doing this type of community work out of the purity of your heart gains you a much greater sense of your community, and I hope to see you all active within Key Club in the upcoming months.

Ayush Shah | ’21-’22 Treasurer

SHINE SERVICE? WiTH

what does it mean to

Hello hello fellow BEE-Utiful Key-clubbers!! Even with all this craze and stress, I just wanted to share the importance of just a bit of service. It starts with defining “service”...but let me tell you, even the dictionary is vague! From the “act of serving” to “being of use” or “contributing to the welfare of others,” there are multiple ones, but how powerful can this one word be? What is your definition? It isn’t just about doing service months in Key Club but LITERALLY following our motto: Caring - our way of life! So…small hidden service like helping around the house is service to your family. Self-care is service to yourself. And simple acts like saying thank you or smiling to a stranger or just picking up trash is service for others! That’s what we love here at Whitney Key Club! “Be someone’s sunshine when their skies are grey.” What a beautiful mission to follow everyday! Sure, service can lead to hours and recognition, but that’s not the main point! It’s beyond so much more than within Key Club’s boundaries and we encourage you to bring that mindset with you wherever you go! We are service’s swimming pool, while there’s so much more waiting to be explored in the deep end! Even an internship, starting a club, participating in a movement is a kind of service! Following your passions and just one action, one life changed, is a BIG deal! That can ALSO be a service! Service is doing something you love, and being a helpful happy bee. It shouldn’t be a burden or something to rush at the last minute, but something you enjoy doing because you love it and you know what a wonderful impact it will have on other people's (and animal’s) lives! The service activities we suggest are meant to be fun and relaxing, and that’s why we’re always open to new ideas!

We’d appreciate it so much if you busy bees could take out some time to fill out this form and let us know what you love or would like to change! New suggestions are ALWAYS welcome, so what would you like to see? Just remember, stay SAFE-KEY! Thank you!

FILL OUT OUR FORM

https://forms.gle/ugcxqB83UDQkrmjj9

Signing off with some questions to think about: What is shining with service? What does it mean to you? What makes you enjoy serving? (remember: service comes in all kinds of forms!) These may seem simple, but just thinking about them can go a long way! Have a BEE-UTIFUL Day!

Alyssa Truong | ’21-’22 Director of Activities

how to stay

INVOLVED?

Virtual school has made staying active in clubs much more challenging. It’s harder to feel involved when a screen separates you from everyone else. However, Key Club has adapted to this new online format and here are several things you can do to continue our community service and spirit!

Be sure to follow Key Club on Facebook and Instagram! Social media is the main channel cabby uses to communicate with you. Remaining informed about all of the club’s upcoming meetings, activities, and fundraisers is a crucial aspect of being an active member.

Although in-person volunteering isn’t possible at the moment, stay active with our monthly service activities sent out by email! Key Club has a variety of service activities each month totaling over 30 hours, with focuses on food security, children, and the environment.

STAY UPDATED

SERVE ONLINE

Key Club general meetings are the perfect opportunity to bond with members every month during quarantine! In addition to entertaining games and trivia challenges, you also have the opportunity to hear directly from our cabby on future events.

The easiest way to support Key Club is through our fundraisers! Whether it be ordering from a favorite restaurant on Food Night or donating old clothes during Clothing Drive, it doesn’t take much to support our community.

GOALS TO SET

4 THE NEW TERM

Hey KEYuties! Although it is nearing the end of the school year, we are still pretty fresh into our new ‘21 - ‘22 term for Key Club. With this new term, it is important for all members, new and returning, to set goals for themselves as Key Clubbers, which will help in staying motivated and dedicated throughout the year!

1 2 3

staying active

Maintaining an active status in Key Club is extremely beneficial. By coming to various events, you are often able to meet new people, which is one of the most fun aspects of Key Club! Additionally, by constantly making an effort to be present, you are able to show your priority towards Key Club, which is highly looked upon and will help you in continuing to demonstrate this same kind of dedication throughout the year!

staying updated

Whether it be through our Instagram, Facebook Group, or even just Email, keeping yourself updated on all things Key Club will help you immensely during the term. There are so many ways to keep up with all of our information, as mentioned previously. However, we also have an outstanding Club Cabinet that works so incredibly hard. So, please do not hesitate to use us as a recourse and reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns, whenever need be!

staying passionate

Developing a passion for Key Club is crucial! Making sure there is purpose behind the actions you take in Key Club is a tremendous factor in building motivation within yourself. By researching about our preferred charities, learning the background behind a service project, or even just taking the steps listed above, staying active and updated, you will definitely be able to have a strong relationship with Key Club, setting you up for nothing but success!

There are infinite goals that one can set for themselves, and it can truly be at anytime throughout the term. However, I hope I was able to help with a few of my tips! I deeply encourage all of you to do your best in staying driven and inspired, not just during this term, but throughout the entirety of your Key Club journey! With that being said, I can’t wait to have a BEEutiful term, Whitney Key Club!

Sania Usmani | ’21-’22 Director of Fundraising

BEEING INVOLVED OVER THE SUMMER

The feeling of excitement in the air as the “bell” rings for our last day of class will be unmatched after this weird school year. I don’t know about you but I can wait for my computer to go back to just being used to binge Netflix or do the occasional online assignment before 11:59PM. BUT, this summer you can use your time to do something for your community by staying involved with Key Club! We’re still at a fresh start for the new term so here are some things YOU can do to be a busy bee this summer!

1

2

Starting off with our very own Whitney Key Club, attend the general meetings! We have general meetings every month where we talk about upcoming fundraisers, service months, and play games to stay connected with our friends in this virtual space. So come out to our next one, and bring a friend! We love having you all and seeing your smiling faces!

Next, our service months! Each month, we hold a virtual service month where you can participate in activities related to our themes. Last month, April, we had an environmental theme, as we celebrated Earth day, and this month, it’s all about the kids! BEE on the lookout for our upcoming June Service Month email to see how you can spend your summer volunteering!

3

4

DCMs! Held every month, Division Council Meetings are the best way to connect with new people, and meet together as a division for announcements. Come out to recognize outstanding individuals, hear the new business for the month, and even participate in division service weeks held by our Service Project Chairs! Follow @d30ssuns on Instagram to always BEE updated with our division!

Finally, the KEY to staying involved this summer is following our socials. We publicize all our fundraisers, movie nights, and general meetings!

Vedika Kothari | ’21-’22 Director of Activities

INHALE, EXHALE inhale, exhale

What’s buzzin’ Key Club? Congratulations on finishing all of your AP Exams, and if you still have some, I wish you the best of luck! With only finals and a couple of more weeks of school left, it’s important we keep pushing and finish the year strong! Regardless if we are stressed or not, it is super important to take care of our mental health and take breaks every now and then. In order to stay grounded and prevent burnout, here are 5 ideas on how you can destress and practice self care!

sleep

One of the best ways to relax and take care of your body is to catch up on sleep! Especially since it’s study season with AP’s and finals, sleeping in and/or sleeping early can be a good reset and way to recharge. Some benefits of sleep include a better mood, clear mind, lowered risk for health issues, an improved memory, and reduced stress. Make sure to get the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep!

hobbies

Whether you’re trying something new or doing something you genuinely enjoy, hobbies can clear your mind of any stress and problems you overthink about. Reading a book, watching a movie/TV show, meditating, and listening to music are just some examples of ways you can destress. In essence, do anything that brings you joy and NOT stress!

nature

After being cooped up in our rooms and staring at a screen all day, we all need to go out and get a whiff of fresh air. The stillness and calmness of nature is also a stark contrast to our stress-filled and busy lives. When we seek peace, nature can be just what we’re looking for. You can walk around a park, watch the waves at the beach, or go on a hike!

social life

People are different! Some of us are social butterflies while others prefer staying at home cocooned in our rooms. For our extroverts, seeing friends through a social-distanced get together or a video call can be a great way to clear your mind (or complain about the stress). Getting away from social media is another fantastic way to practice self care. It can get pretty toxic, and it is beneficial to disconnect every now and then!

treat yourself

Go buy that boba! Splurge on a new pair of jeans! Do skincare or have a spa day! It is absolutely okay to reward yourself for all of your hard work in any way, shape, or form. Celebrate!! You’ve put in so much effort, so why not?
