Happo-One
Happo-One (pronounced “Oh Nay”) is the largest and most central resort in the Hakuba Valley, spanning 220 hectares.
Happo-One features a steep pitch with a vertical drop of 1,700 meters, making it a favorite for more experienced skiers. The resort has a rich sporting and events record having hosted the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, the Freeride World Tour, and the music festival, Snow Machine.
OLYMPIC HERITAGE
Happo-One gained international recognition during the 1998 Nagano Olympics as host of the ski jumping, downhill, and super-G events. This was Japan’s most successful Winter Olympics to date with five gold medals awarded. Of these, two were earned in ski jumping at Happo-One. The Olympic legacy remains prevalent in Hakuba
today, with many visitors flocking to the venues to relive the excitement and enjoy the infrastructure that was developed for the games.
TERRAIN FOR EVERY SKIER
For thrill-seekers, HAPPO PARKS Terrain Park is the ultimate spot to catch some airtime. On powder days, the tree runs on Skyline are highly recommended, offering a fun ride comparable to those in Cortina, though slightly shorter.
On clear days, make your way to Riesen Grat, the resort’s highest peak. From there enjoy a run that takes you down through Alpen, Usagidaira, and Panorama, eventually leading onto the former Women’s Slalom Course and finishing at the bottom of the Kokusai area.

Iwatake
Iwatake
On a clear day, there is no other mountain you’ll want to be on. Standing at over 1,200 meters, Iwatake offers some of the most stunning views of the valley. Visitors can expect a mix of shorter runs as well as those spanning the entire vertical drop, providing an incredibly satisfying descent. Besides beautiful runs, Iwatake boasts incredible facilities making it a top destination for international skiers and snowboarders.
WORLD CLASS FACILITIES
Visitors to Iwatake can experience the fastest, quietest, and most comfortable ride in the Hakuba Valley on the new state-of-the-art gondola opening December 2024. With enhanced wind resistance and the ability to carry skis and snowboards inside, the new lifts significantly increase capacity, reducing wait times for visitors.
Iwatake has made significant investments in non-skiing attractions for both the winter and green seasons. Visitors can launch themselves over the slopes on
the Yoo-Hoo! Swing, enjoy breathtaking views and sweet treats at Mountain Harbor’s The City Bakery, and indulge in the elevated experience of private lounges with the S Class VIP Ticket.
IWATAKE
IS FOR DOG LOVERS
Iwatake is one of the few resorts where you can ride the gondola without skis and with your dog by your side. Head to the pet zone, let your furry friend stretch their legs at the dog run, and enjoy some R&R afterwards at the indoor SkyArk.
Many people flock to Cortina on powder days, leaving Iwatake‘s tree lines comparably quiet for more peaceful runs.

HAKUBA HEROES
The Shiojimas
The vibrant Hakuba Valley you see today is a testament to the dedication of countless contributors. Yet few have left a legacy as profound as long-time locals, Shinichi Shiojima-san, and his wife, Madame Kazuko Shiojima.
The story begins in 1968, when 23-year-old Shiojima-san decided to break from his family’s farming tradition and open a lodge named La Neige, catering to young Japanese skiers. The property was located in Tsugaike, Hakuba’s premier ski destination in the 70s and 80s.
Shiojima-san proudly reflects on the Tsugaike of that period, recalling the village even had its own disco bar. To draw the trendsetting Japanese youth to his accommodation, Shiojima-san designed a new, futuristic annex that resembled a spaceship. During the time of disco and space exploration, Shiojima-san met his now wife, Madame Shiojima.
The two would go on to build one of the most iconic resort hotels and experiences in the Hakuba Valley, combining their visions to create a destination beloved by both local visitors and those from across the globe.
His respect for nature guided his vision.
“Some trees in the forest are over 100 years old, so we designed and produced the hotel with the concept of a ‘hotel nestled in the forest,’ ensuring that the building would not surpass the height of these trees.”
Before construction began, Shiojima-san personally walked the land, cataloging each tree based on size, age, and health. With this ranking system, he ensured that only necessary trees were removed, allowing the buildings to blend harmoniously into the forest.
“We also made use of the natural slope of the land, which resulted in several elevation changes within the building. The layout emphasizes a fusion with nature, featuring large windows and a bath with views of the surrounding forest. Unlike life in the city, which centers around people, this space may feel a little inconvenient for some. However, it is designed with the hope that you will sense the coexistence of nature, animals, and people.”
The west wing of the La Neige Hotel, a Tudor-style manor house, was completed in 1983. The east wing followed in 1990.
DESIGNING A HOTEL: THE SHIOJIMAS, CIRCA 1980
DESIGN IS IN THE DETAIL
It wasn’t just nature that piqued Shiojimasan’s creativity as he built and designed La Neige. He drew significant inspiration from the works of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, even visiting the United States several times to experience Wright’s architecture in person.
The Shiojimas spent time traveling and researching the finest boutique hotels in France, England, and Germany which ultimately shaped the hotel’s unique concept.
Rather than offering a cookie-cutter experience, each room at La Neige is thoughtfully designed around a unique piece of furniture handpicked by Shiojimasan, ensuring a one-of-a-kind visit for every guest. The confluence of Western design inspiration, Shiojima-san’s discerning eye, and the Japanese omotenashi style of service form the incredible character and charm La Neige has today.
FOUNDING HAKUBA TOURISM
In the face of these challenges, Shiojima-san, ever the entrepreneur, joined forces with local hotel and ryokan owners to establish Hakuba Tourism—the first organized effort to promote Hakuba beyond Japan’s borders.
THE POWER OF THE HAKUBA VALLEY
Rather than focus on a single resort, Shiojima-san saw the power of the Hakuba community and harnessing the collective strength of the entire region. He coined the term “the Hakuba Valley” and began preparing marketing materials in English around this new destination. The team took to the skies, embarking on their first international trip to Australia to promote Hakuba to a global audience.
THE 1998 OLYMPICS AND SHIOJIMA-SAN’S VISION
Hakuba had the honor of hosting the 1998 Winter Olympics, and yet again, Shiojima-san saw an opportunity; he designed a special Olympic monument to welcome the event to the region. Next was the challenge of funding this ambitious project.
Shiojima-san reached out to Hakuba business owners, local citizens, and corporations in Tokyo, including Coca-Cola, Kirin, and Epson, offering rooms at his hotel during the Olympic games in exchange for their support. His efforts paid off; he successfully raised 10 million yen, and the monument was built. To this day, the sign stands proudly at the base of Wadano Forest, a lasting symbol of his determination and love for Hakuba.
POST-OLYMPIC CHALLENGES
The lead-up to the Olympics saw a boom in domestic tourism, particularly in skiing. However, once the games concluded, that boom quickly fizzled. By 2004, the slopes were near-empty, and Hakuba’s economy was in dire straits.
BEFORE THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET ARRIVED
Despite their hard work and dedication, it took another 15 years before the inbound market developed into the behemoth we see today. During this time, Madame Shiojima shifted her focus to promoting the green season. A central element of her strategy was hosting events, including musical performances, parties with high-profile guests, and cultural experiences like tea ceremonies. Weddings, in particular, became a major business. La Neige grew into one of the region’s most popular wedding destinations, with Madame Shiojima planning bespoke ceremonies on the Hakuba mountains, by riversides, and in local chapels, but always culminating with a reception at La Neige.
Though La Neige caters to the international market during the snow season, it now remarkably generates more revenue in the green season—a rare achievement in Hakuba and testament to its unique appeal.
Personally overseeing hundreds of weddings and events, Madame Shiojima earned the loyalty and trust of guests who returned to La Neige year after year, drawn to her warmth and flawless execution.
THE FUTURE OF HAKUBA RESORT HOTEL LA NEIGE
Earlier this year, the Shiojimas made the thoughtful decision to pass their cherished hotel into new hands, entrusting its future to new owners who have partnered with Hakuba Hospitality Group (HHG) for its management. Both the new owners and HHG envision an exciting path forward—one that honors the hotel’s rich history while introducing thoughtful updates and enhancements. The Shiojimas will continue as esteemed advisors, supporting this new chapter to ensure that every improvement balances modernization with the warmth and excellence that guests have come to expect.
MADAME SHIOJIMA RECEIVED THE CHEVALIER OF THE FRENCH AGRICULTURAL ORDER AWARD FOR HER SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO FRENCH FOOD AND CULTURE
Behind the Scenes at Hakuba Goryu
Hakuba Goryu is one of Hakuba’s most popular resorts with a diverse range of offerings in both green and snow seasons alike. Behind the beauty and wonder of Hakuba Goryu is a team of dedicated individuals ensuring your time at the resort runs flawlessly. We’ve found two of Goryu’s “Hakuba Heroes” to share their stories. We invite you to meet Kazuo Iimori, a veteran lift operator with over 30 years of experience, and Arisa Koriyama, a member of the Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden team. Enjoy these fresh perspectives on resort life.
KAZUO IIMORI: A LIFELONG DEDICATION TO HAKUBA GORYU
For Kazuo Iimori, working at Hakuba Goryu is more than just a job—it’s his life’s commitment. For over 30 years, Kazuo has been a member of the operations department, ensuring the lifts run safely and smoothly for the hundreds of thousands of guests who visit each year. His day-to-day responsibilities include maintaining the lifts, training part-time staff, and overseeing operations during both winter and summer seasons.
LABOR OF LOVE
When asked about the challenges of the job, Kazuo modestly stated that the hardest part isn’t the mechanical work, but maintaining high safety standards while providing a smooth guest experience. For Kazuo, it’s a labor of love.
Kazuo, a lifelong resident of the Hakuba Valley, has witnessed the evolution of the region over the decades. From a mostly domestic clientele to an influx of international visitors, he sees the future of
“Lift operators do more than just help people on and off safely—we ensure the lifts are well-maintained and ready for safe operation. For people who like working with machines and want to learn about them, I think it’s a pretty attractive job.”
Hakuba becoming more global, but is proud to see Hakuba still cherishing its local roots.
When he’s not helping you up the lift this season, you can catch Kazuo driving his new car and practicing kendama, a traditional Japanese skill toy, which led him to participate in the Kendama World Cup this year.
ARISA KORIYAMA: HELPING HAKUBA BLOOM
Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden is home to 300 species and around two million individual alpine plants, thanks to the green thumb of many, including Arisa Koriyama. Together with her teammates, she carefully maintains the botanical garden, ensuring that rare species, such as the Himalayan Blue Poppy and the Dicentra Peregrina, thrive.
For Arisa, her joy comes from transforming small, daily tasks into a beautifully cultivated space for visitors to enjoy. Originally from Osaka, Arisa moved to Hakuba searching for work that combined her love for snowboarding and nature.
In winter, Arisa works as a lift attendant, guiding guests onto chairlifts and ensuring their safety. Her enthusiasm and positive energy make even brief interactions with guests memorable. She finds joy in watching people, especially beginners, gain confidence in snowboarding over the course of a day.
After 17 years in Hakuba, Arisa remains dedicated to preserving Hakuba Goryu’s nature while creating memorable experiences for visitors. She believes Hakuba’s future is bright, as more people discover its year-round beauty, just as she once did.
“Since this isn’t a national park, we can plant rare species from all over Japan and the world. There are things you can only see here, which is a big difference compared to other gardens.“
A TEAM DRIVEN BY PASSION
Our local Hakuba Heroes remind us that the alpine resort experience is shaped by the hard work and dedication of those behind the scenes.

10“Unwritten” Rules for Enjoying a Japanese Onsen
Ah, the Japanese onsen! It’s more than just a bath; it’s a ritual steeped in tradition. But before you jump in, there are a few rules you’ll want to know to avoid any unintentional faux pas. Don’t worry, though! We’ve got you covered with this light-hearted guide to onsen etiquette.
1
Leave your swimsuit at home—onsen are all about getting back to basics. Yes, that means you’ll be in your birthday suit! Embrace it. Everyone else is doing the same, and after the first few minutes, it’ll feel as natural as, well, nature itself.
2
Scrub-a-Dub-Dub Before the Tub
Cleanliness is next to onsen-ness! Before stepping into the communal bath, you’ll need to scrub yourself down so you’re squeaky clean before your soak. Most onsen provide stools, showers, and all the soap and shampoo you could need. So, go ahead and give yourself a good wash from head to toe.
3 Birthday Suit Required!
Towel Talk
You’ll receive two towels: one large and one small. The large towel is for drying off afterward—keep it in the changing room. The small towel is your modesty shield while you walk around. But once you’re in the bath, this little towel shouldn’t join you in the water. Perch it on your head or leave it on the side of the tub. But whatever you do, don’t let it soak!
4
In many onsen, tattoos are a no-go. Historically, tattoos in Japan have been associated with the Yakuza (Japanese mafia), and operators still maintain the no-tattoo rule. But don’t despair! Times are changing, and all Hakuba onsen are tattoo friendly.
The water in an onsen is for soaking, not swimming, and definitely not diving. Besides, the water is only waist-deep, so diving is out of the question unless you enjoy bumping your head. Enter and exit the bath slowly and gracefully—think Zen, not cannonball.
9 10 8 5 Tattoo Taboo?
If you’ve got long hair, tie it up! The last thing you want is to leave a trail of hair floating around the onsen like an aquatic ghost. A bun or ponytail works wonders, and if you’ve got short hair, just make sure it’s out of the water.
6 7
An onsen is a place for peace and relaxation, not a rowdy pool party. Keep your voice down, and resist the urge to splash or swim. This is the time to soak, relax, and reflect—not to practice your freestyle.
While a glass of sake might sound like the perfect addition to your relaxing soak, it’s best to keep the drinks for after your bath. The hot water can amplify the effects of alcohol, making you dizzy or lightheaded—definitely not the kind of relaxation you’re aiming for!
Onsen are communal spaces, and it’s important to be mindful of those around you. Don’t hog the best spot in the bath, and if it’s crowded, make space for others. And whatever you do, don’t bring your phone in. Onsen time is tech-free.
Once you’ve had your fill of soaking, give yourself a quick rinse before drying off. This helps keep the changing area clean and ensures you’re not leaving a trail of onsen water in your wake.
Japanese onsen are a beautiful blend of culture, relaxation, and tradition. By following these simple rules, you’ll not only respect the customs but also
enhance your own experience. So go ahead—take a deep breath, soak and let the onsen work its magic. Happy bathing!

Craft Beer and Community
A TRULY LOCAL BEER
Hakuba Craft, a local brewing company, pairs local talent with the crisp flavours of the Japanese Alps to create an experience your taste buds won’t soon forget.
Founded in 2021 by Hakuba locals and long-time friends Azuma Tanaka and Yu Taguchi, Hakuba Craft has a simple mission: to create a deliciously memorable Hakuba souvenir. In its short lifetime, the brewery has grown into one of the most popular in the area, cemented by the recent opening of Hakuba Beer Garage, a brewpub in Tsugaike.
Hakuba Craft combines local appreciation (five out of seven employees were born and raised in the Hakuba Valley) and exceptional Japanese brewing techniques to create beers perfectly suited to the alpine lifestyle.
“Tsugaike is home to pure, mineral-free water, known for its softness and neutrality —key to the brewery’s crisp, clean flavors.”
A BEER CRAFTED FOR THE SPORTY SPIRIT
With light, refreshing flavors and a low alcohol level, Hakuba Craft beer is the perfect companion for active adventurers —whether you’re hiking, snowboarding, or enjoying any outdoor sports.
The secret of Hakuba Craft beer lies in the water. Tsugaike is home to pure, mineral-free water, known for its softness and neutrality—key to the brewery’s crisp, clean flavors. Hakuba Craft prioritizes a balanced taste that reflects the pristine, natural environment of Hakuba.
HAKUBA AND BEYOND
While current production is relatively small and caters to the Hakuba community, Hakuba Craft has set an ambitious target to increase capacity tenfold over the next five years. With an eye on international markets across Asia and Australia, Hakuba Craft is excited to spread the taste of Hakuba and Japanese beer beyond our valley.
“Hakuba Craft’s journey represents a meaningful blend of community, craftsmanship, and creativity.”
Looking outward, the team is equally committed to preserving Hakuba’s local culture, and to ensuring their brewery is an accessible and welcoming place for both Japanese and international visitors. As the Hakuba Valley continues to evolve, Hakuba Craft is a shining example of local pride and innovation.
A CommunityCentered Tradition
Take the taste of Hakuba home with you this season with a bottle of sake, crafted by skilled local brewers with rice planted and harvested by Hakuba’s vibrant community.
No other initiative provides a blend of tradition, community and local sustainability like the Hakuba Sake Brewing Project. The project launched eight years ago and is powered by the people of Hakuba. The community gathers in May, volunteering their time to plant rice using traditional methods.
Once planted, local Hakuba farmers tend to the crops until the community gathers again in September for a celebratory harvest, complete with a barbecue and a local sake or two. Tourists are welcome to join both the planting and the harvest.
Next, the rice is delivered to the local brewer who transforms it into delicious sake for everyone to enjoy.
Inspired by France’s Beaujolais Nouveau, this project began in 2017 as a collaboration between Hakuba Happo-One and the esteemed local sake brewery, Hakuba Nishiki. Together, they set out
to create a seasonal sake that reflects the rich heritage and quality of Japanese brewing. Each year, the team produces a limited-edition sake and provides locals
“Hakuba Happo-One has a deep history as a ski resort, surrounded by stunning natural beauty. But it’s not just the landscape that makes it special—the people and the vibrant atmosphere are equally captivating.”
and visitors with a hands-on experience in traditional sake-making, celebrating each season’s bountiful rice harvest.
“We began this project in part to show just how extraordinary Hakuba Happo-One truly is.”

Located in Omachi City at an altitude of over 700 meters, the brewery produces sake using locally grown rice and pure mountain water sourced from the Japanese Northern Alps. Koya Snowcraft
In the heart of Hakuba, Koya Snowcraft builds high-performance snowboards by hand, embodying both the rugged spirit of the Japanese Alps and the tradition of local craftsmanship.
Founded by Andrew Kelly, a Hakuba resident heading into his twentieth winter here, and local partner Ian Miller, Koya is more than just a snowboard brand—it’s a unique experience celebrating the natural beauty of Hakuba. Koya, meaning “hut” or “shed” in Japanese, draws inspiration from Hakuba’s small craft makers whose creative ideas and local innovations often take shape in humble workshops and sheds around the valley.
Every Koya snowboard is designed with Hakuba’s unique terrain in mind. The cores are made by hand—mixing the flex, strength and weight of locally sourced hinoki (Japanese cypress) with hand-selected custom stringers of karamatsu (Japanese larch) and tamo
MADE
(Japanese ash), ensuring Koya boards have a fine-tuned response perfect for a day on the Japanese Alps. With clear topsheets revealing the wood core, each Koya board is truly a piece of functional art.
“The dream started in 2016, fueled by a desire to craft snowboards shaped by Hakuba’s environment and local materials.”
Visitors can experience the crafting process firsthand at Koya’s workshop hut—just 400 meters from Hakuba Goryu resort—where each model is tested and refined before it’s ready for the slopes.
Grab a beer in their cozy in-house bar, trade stories of the day’s rides, and even test ride each of Koya’s three signature models:
The K-Truck: A compact, all-mountain powder board built for responsive carving and effortless float.
The Angler: A super-wide fish-tail board ideal for deep powder and dynamic edge control.
The Lantern: Created for youth and smaller riders, offering agile, responsive handling.
Interested in your own Koya Snowboard? Only a limited number of boards will be available to purchase this winter. Follow their journey on Instagram @koyasnowcraft to keep up with new releases and claim your perfect piece of Hakuba craftsmanship.

Large Developments Propel Hakuba to New Heights
As the Hakuba real estate market continues to evolve, more landmark developments are being announced which will improve the quality of accommodation offerings in the Hakuba Valley and assist in propelling the local real estate market to a whole new stratosphere.
Over the past 5 years, a large number of chalets and condominiums have been constructed in the Happo/Wadano and Echoland/Misorano areas. The construction of new chalets and refurbishment of older ones is expected to continue at a similar pace, with a focus on these two central areas in Hakuba.
Recent developments, Mountainside and ROKA, both offer ski-in, ski-out access in the Happo/Wadano area with eight units in each property. The newer of the two, ROKA, completed the sale of its last unit in early 2024. La Vigne Hakuba, from Yokohamabased List Development, is the latest 38-unit development at the bottom of Echoland. This high-end property will open its doors in December 2024 and over 80% of units are already sold. The majority of the buyers are from Japan and the balance of the units are expected to be sold this winter.
Over the past year, the market has been particularly active for larger transactions and projects, all of which are expected to be significant “dial turners” for the Hakuba Valley.
EXPLORE THE CHANGES COMING TO THE HAKUBA VALLEY
BANYAN TREE, WADANO The Banyan Tree project in Wadano broke ground this year. Upon completion in 2028, the property will have 108 hotel rooms and 48 condominiums. Banyan Tree is developed by a Tokyo-based real estate firm.

evo HOTEL HAKUBA, HAPPO The outdoor sporting goods company evo, owner of Rhythm Japan, will open the doors of their third evo Hotel (first in Japan) in Happo in December 2024.
The development boom of Hakuba is expected to drive the valley to new heights in the coming years!
Onshore and offshore developers continue to look for suitable sites for larger development projects. Projects already in the pipeline and future projects are expected to drive the market to new heights—from a pricing and product perspective—over the coming years. There is certainly plenty to look forward to as the market evolves from a real estate perspective.

Bryce’s Vision for evo Hotel Hakuba and Rhythm Japan
In 2006 evo Founder, Bryce Phillips, journeyed to Hakuba, lured by the promise of untouched powder and majestic mountains. Filming for a U.S. TV show, he discovered a slice of Japan that blended exhilarating terrain with rich Japanese culture and warm hospitality.
The Hakuba experience stayed with Bryce, fostering his deep connection with Japan that ultimately led him back to the valley––this time as an investor. Almost 20 years later Bryce has acquired and expanded Rhythm Japan, a premier rental and retail shop, and is soon to open evo Hotel Hakuba. Bryce is dedicated to Hakuba’s next chapter as a premier mountain destination while respecting the traditions that make the valley so unique. Here, Bryce reflects on his journey, his love for the Japanese Alps, and his future vision for evo and Rhythm Japan.
HOW DID YOU FIRST EXPERIENCE HAKUBA?
BRYCE My first trip to Hakuba was in 2006 filming for a U.S. TV show, searching out the “big mountains of Japan”. I was blown away by the terrain, getting my first opportunity to ski all of the areas including a fair bit of back and side country. The pinnacle was a “happy north face day” with new snow, stable conditions, and blue skies. It was surreal, especially having no idea what to expect prior to arriving in Japan.
“While the skiing was amazing, I loved the entire experience—the people, the culture, the food, all of it.”
HOW HAS HAKUBA CHANGED SINCE THEN?
BRYCE More people are here, of course, but I love the fact that more people are getting the opportunity to experience something so special.
TELL US ABOUT THE evo BRAND AND ITS STORY.
BRYCE evo started from my passion for the outdoors and a need to fund that passion. My uncle introduced me to skiing at a young age, and by my teens, I was buying and selling gear. In the late 90s, eBay helped me turn that side-hustle into something bigger, and I launched evogear.com in 2001 out of my garage. Since then, evo has evolved, but certain elements have remained constant: our dedication to community, culture, and sharing a love for the outdoors around the world.
“Hakuba is an extraordinary place. I love the terrain, the deep friendships built over the years, and the Japanese mountain culture that is thriving in new ways as time moves forward.”
BRYCE IN HAKUBA IN 2006
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN: THE HUMBLE GARAGE THAT LAUNCHED A STARTUP DREAM
HOW DID THIS INFLUENCE YOUR DECISION TO INVEST IN JAPAN WITH RHYTHM JAPAN AND evo HOTEL HAKUBA?
BRYCE It was all very organic. Rhythm and evo joined forces a couple of years back, and when the evo Hotel opportunity presented itself, it was an easy call to make. Connecting the dots between our travel business, evoTrip, and Rhythm, while creating relationships with new adventurers from around the world, is a bullseye.
WHERE DO YOU SEE HAKUBA IN 5–10 YEARS?
BRYCE It’s clear to me that Hakuba will be on the short-list of global, mountain town icons. This is exciting, but some of the change will also create growing pains. It’s critical that we all respect the Japanese culture and look to have a positive impact on the community. We always look to build lasting relationships over the long-term, and this is especially important as we establish the evo brand in Hakuba during this time of change.
WHAT ROLE DO YOU ENVISION evo AND RHYTHM
JAPAN PLAYING IN HAKUBA’S FUTURE?
BRYCE We want to create a place where all feel welcome, where all are respected, and the experience we deliver makes clear our intent to have a positive impact on this community.
CREATING COMMUNITY FOR ADVENTURE SEEKERS
As Bryce and the evo team embark on this new chapter in Hakuba, they remain focused on creating a positive impact in the community through amazing outdoor experiences. With evo Hotel Hakuba soon opening its doors and Rhythm Japan thriving, Bryce’s vision for Hakuba is clear: to foster a place where adventurers from around the world can experience the beauty of the Japanese Alps, all while preserving the rich culture and heritage of this unique region.

In 2023, the resort moved to 100% renewal energy for all operations including lifts, gondolas, shops, restaurants, and snow machines. Night skiing has been powered by renewable energy since 2020, and from this season energy-efficient LED lighting will debut on all night slopes.
Hakuba Goryu’s commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated by joining the Sustainable Resort Alliance (SRA), led by Protect Our Winters Japan (POW JAPAN), helping to reduce the carbon footprint of skiing.
A TRUE FRIENDSHIP OVER THE YEARS
Much like Hakuba, the charming alpine village of Lech Zürs in Austria, renowned for its fantastic slopes and royal luxury, seamlessly blends tradition with modernity. This year, Lech Zürs of the Austrian Alps, and Hakuba Happo-One of the Japanese Alps, celebrate 35 years of partnership as sister slopes.

Despite the geographic distance across continents, the partnership was natural. Both Lech Zürs and Hakuba HappoOne share a set of values and traditions deeply rooted in their mountain cultures. While each thrives on tourism, both regions are dedicated to preserving the natural beauty as evident in their dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism projects.
To mark the 35th anniversary of partnership between the two resorts, a series of cultural treasures were exchanged and symbolic gestures made. Earlier this year, a group of musicians performed on the traditional Austrian Alphorn in Tokyo, while in Hakuba, locals celebrated their friendship with Lech by enjoying Vorarlberg Käsknöpfle—Austria’s version of mac and cheese—paired with traditional Lech festival wine.
The friendship between Lech Zürs and Hakuba Happo-One reaffirms that love of the mountains knows no boundaries. The ties between Austria and Japan stand strong as both regions exchange ideas, learn from, and ultimately benefit from each other.
While Hakuba Happo-One shines through its Olympic history, Lech Zürs stands for exclusive European winter sports experiences and world-class hospitality. Whether visiting the Austrian or the Japanese Alps, visitors will experience nature in an unparalleled way––through thrilling sporting challenges and peaceful moments amidst snowy landscapes.

LOVE WE WHY HAKUBA 47 SKI RESORT
Nadine Robb, owner and director of Hakuba Ski Concierge, shares her personal favorite highlights and hidden gems, offering a unique perspective on what makes Hakuba 47 a must-visit resort.
Hakuba is a heavenly escape. Its pristine slopes promise both thrill and tranquility. Escape from the bustling metropolis of Tokyo and experience the beauty of the Japanese Alps.
Careful, though. You may fall in love with the place and never leave, just like we did. The Hakuba Valley has over ten resorts, 200 runs, and enough snow for the most discerning powder lover. We can’t get enough. Hakuba Ski Concierge has called Hakuba 47 our home resort for the past eight years. We have taught thousands of lessons on its slopes. With all the options, you may wonder why we love Hakuba 47 Winter Sports Park so much. Read on to find out why we choose to teach here and why it should be at the top of the list for your next ski vacation.
THE LONG SEASON
Hakuba 47 consistently has one of the longest ski seasons in the valley. The resort works diligently every year to be the first and last to have runs open from top to bottom. As a ski school, we love that we can depend on the resort to provide the best snow quality and conditions—even during the early and late seasons.
BEGINNER RUNS AT MID-MOUNTAIN
Unlike most other resorts in the valley, Hakuba 47’s beginner terrain is midmountain. All of our beginner lessons start from the top gondola station, which provides our students with an authentic mountain experience and better snow conditions.
BEST TERRAIN PARK IN THE VALLEY
Ben, one of our senior snowboard instructors, says, “The 47 freestyle park is built early in the season and usually maintained until the end. It has a wide range of jumps, boxes, and rails from beginner to advanced.” The park is home to Olympic hopefuls and weekend warriors alike.
KIDS LOVE THE CAT TRACK
Time on snow is the key to teaching little ones to ski. The more time they spend sliding, the better they get. The 1,500 meter long cat track is one of the best teaching runs in the valley.
We have taught hundreds of kids, from two years old and up, to ski on this run. Watching them progress from tentative gliding to stopping and turning in a single run is magic.
ONE PASS, 3 RESORTS
Hakuba 47 is connected to Hakuba Goryu and Iimori. One lift pass allows access to all three resorts. This means you can explore a wide range of terrain and easily switch between resorts depending on snow conditions.
TERRAIN OPTIONS
Variety is the spice of life, and skiing is no different. Hakuba 47 offers terrain for all levels—from gentle beginner runs to steep and challenging advanced runs. As a ski school, it’s essential to be able to teach guests of all ability levels.
Great Beginner Terrain: The midmountain is an excellent training ground for beginner skiers and snowboarders.
Long Intermediate Trails: The resort has long groomed trails that take you from the top to the bottom. These trails are excellent for intermediate skiers.
Tree Runs and Off-Piste: If you want to take your skiing up a notch, Hakuba 47 has the best lift-accessible tree skiing in the valley.
Moguls: If you’re like me and a bit of a glutton for self-punishment, the top lift gives you access to some of the longest zipper-line moguls in the valley.
This is where our instructors go to train spring moguls.
Terrain Park: If you’re ready to get inverted, Hakuba 47 has the best freestyle park. It has a half-pipe, three jump lines from small to large, and various boxes.
EXCELLENT DINING
After a day on the slopes, enjoy a pint at The Beer Bar or a slice at the gourmet pizza restaurant at the resort’s base. The mid-mountain cafeteria serves excellent Japanese and Western options, while Hakuba Goryu and Iimori have several on-mountain dining options to choose from.
