A LETTER FROM YOUR MAYOR FOGO IS A GO-GO!

Dear Fellow Residents,

It only feels like yesterday that we were celebrating Christmas and now we are already a quarter of the way through the year!

We have had a very strong start to the year with a $1billion investment by the Federal and State Governments to build Fifteenth Avenue, which was then matched by the Opposition. We also had a commitment by both sides of politics to purchase the land to connect Leppington train station to the new airport.

Whilst these commitments are not exactly what we want and need, they are a start. We will continue to fight for you to make sure you have the roads and public transport you need and deserve. It’s not fair we have the most congested roads in Sydney. Council has been fighting for both these things and it’s great to see we are finally being listened to. I want to personally thank everyone in the community who signed our petitions and spoke up, as well as our local MPs from both sides of politics who fought for this.

It shows what we can achieve when we work together. It also helps that we are finally a marginal area politically, so expect more announcements and more visits from political leaders during the election. My job as your Mayor is to get as much money out of them for you as we can. Council cannot fund population growth by itself, and the State and Federal governments have to do their share - it’s only fair! We need them to fund the billions of dollars needed to deal with the 20,000 people a year who are moving into South West Sydney. We need wider roads and more train lines.

On a local level, there are some really exciting improvements coming to your bin service. Check out the next page and find out how you will have more room in your red bins and now our rural communities will get a green bin for the first time.

Look forward to seeing you soon.

FOGO is a Food Organics and Garden Organics recycling service that turns the contents of your green bin into compost!

From 7 July 2025, Liverpool City Council residents with their own set of bins can put their food scraps in the green-lidded bin. All Councils in NSW are required by the State Government to provide a food recycling service by 2030.

Anything put into your red-lidded bin goes to landfill. FOGO allows us to divert organic material from landfill and decrease our greenhouse emissions – freeing up space in your red-lidded bin. It’s a win-win!

These organics are then turned into compost to be used on our parks and sporting fields.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

• You’ll get a kitchen caddy and a roll of compostable bin caddy liners

• You can put all your food scraps into the caddy

• Once the caddy is full, tie up the compostable bin caddy liner and put it into your greenlidded bin for its weekly collection

HOW OFTEN WILL MY BINS BE COLLECTED?

• Green-lidded bin: Weekly

• Red-lidded bin: Weekly

• Yellow-lidded bin: Fortnightly

WHERE WILL I GET MORE COMPOSTABLE BIN CADDY LINERS FROM?

• Council Customer Service Hubs

From 7 July, your green-lidded bin will be emptied weekly. All your kitchen caddy scraps will be going into your green-lidded bin.

To help out, we’re giving you a small caddy + compostable caddy liners to keep in your kitchen.

Shaping the Future of Liverpool

Liverpool City Council is reviewing its Community Strategic Plan (CSP), the highest-level planning document for our local government area. The CSP outlines the vision and priorities for shaping our city’s future, ensuring alignment with the community’s evolving needs.

What is the Community Strategic Plan?

The CSP provides a roadmap for achieving a longterm vision for Liverpool, addressing four key questions:

1. Where are we now?

2. Where do we want to be in 10 years?

3. How will we get there?

4. How will we know when we have arrived?

It includes strategic objectives that guide collaboration across the community, stakeholders, and Council to shape the way Liverpool is transformed over the next decade.

Aligning with Liverpool 2050

The CSP is being reviewed alongside Liverpool 2050, a long-term plan focusing on infrastructure, economy, environment, and community development, ensuring our short-term actions align with the city’s vision for the future.

Get the Kayak life hack

The Georges River at Liverpool now has a state-first fully accessible kayak launch ramp, opening the river to local kayakers for the first time.

There is also a kayak hire station – which means you don’t have to own a kayak to get on the river and explore its natural beauty.

“The hire station means anyone who wants to can go have a paddle. It’s an absolute life hack,” said Mayor Ned Mannoun, who is a keen kayaker himself.

“The river is beautiful and peaceful. Kayaking is a wonderful family activity where you get the chance to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the Georges River,” he said.

The joint operation is proudly funded by the NSW Government and Liverpool City Council, and part of a massive project to rejuvenate Light Horse Park.

“The accessible kayak launching ramp is vital because it promotes inclusivity, ensuring that

everyone, regardless of physical ability, can get out on the river,” Mayor Mannoun said.

“The Light Horse Park Redevelopment project is not just about upgrading a park; it’s about enhancing our community’s quality of life, promoting sustainability, and creating a space for shared memories and experiences,” he said.

Don’t be a trolley wally!

Liverpool City Council is continuing its shopping trolley blitz. More than 900 abandoned shopping trolleys have been taken off the streets.

Deputy Mayor Peter Harle said Council workers and rangers have so far targeted the Liverpool CBD and Casula Mall and more operations are planned.

“It’s time to stop being a trolley wally,” Councillor Harle said. “Liverpool City Council is acting on resident complaints and we are putting supermarket owners on notice that we will keep impounding trolleys that are left abandoned on our streets.

“Abandoned shopping trolleys are a blight: they are an eyesore, look ugly, create visual clutter, and often end up as an unwelcome home for vermin and pests.

“Our Council rangers and clean up teams are to be thanked for taking up the call to stop the trolley cluster catastrophe.

Impounded trolleys are stored at the Council Depot and supermarket operators are given the opportunity to collect them – at a cost. There is a collection fee of $46.30 per trolley which helps cover the operational cost of collecting them. Any left after 28 days are disposed of.

Shopping trolley owners that continue to show disregard for abandoned trolleys will receive fines. These can range from $660 to $1,320 a trolley with larger fines for clusters.

At this stage, Council is not imposing fines but will do so unless the problem of abandoned trolleys is resolved.

It’s a festive economic boost

Festivals are a significant economic boost for Liverpool, driving substantial growth in the region. They are also lots of fun. Events such as the multiaward winning “Experience the World” series play a pivotal role in enhancing Liverpool’s economy by attracting locals and visitors to the city. Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun says the events contributed an impressive $25 million to the regional economy.

“Not only do tens of thousands of people get out of their houses and enjoy a relatively affordable entertainment event, but the festivals are a catalyst for economic development.

“Liverpool’s festivals attract visitors, boost tourism, and increase demand for local goods and services, benefiting small businesses, restaurants, and hotels.

“By supporting events that cater to a wide range of interests and cultural groups, Council can help bridge divides and foster a more harmonious, connected community. “It also shows that Liverpool is a hub of cultural activity that can tourists, media attention, and potential investors.

“Local performers and artisans get gigs, small businesses get extra customers, and the tens of thousands of event-goers get a relatively cheap night out. Everybody wins. “By showcasing the City’s diverse multicultural groups, the festivals also enhance Liverpool’s reputation as a city that celebrates diversity and harmony.

“The positive feedback and growing attendance reflect the success of Council’s event strategy, ensuring ongoing economic benefits for the local area.”
