As we move into autumn, there’s something about the shift in season that makes us all want to slow down a little, layer up and look for comfort in the familiar. The mornings are fresher, the evenings arrive earlier and the promise of cosy nights in or crisp walks out feels just around the corner.
But autumn in Preston and the Fylde never means quiet – and this issue is brimming with proof. We begin at the coast, where Olly Murs swapped the stage for the seafront as he took on the honour of switching on the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations. Lighting up an entire coastline is no small task and the magic of that moment set the tone for a season of sparkle.
Back inland, there’s a very different kind of buzz around a much-loved northern brand. Ant and Dec, the UK’s favourite presenting duo, have joined forces with Preston-based Northern Dough Co., bringing their star power and creative energy to a family business that’s already making waves across the country.
We also shine a light on a footballer who’s taken an unusual step away from the pitch. Connor Ripley and his best friend Sam Thompson have opened Mini Dunes in Preston city centre – a coffee shop with a twist. Think delicious brews for parents alongside a giant indoor sandpit for little ones. It’s innovative, fun and the perfect indoor family destination as the days grow cooler.
On the community front, we celebrate The Hall Players, still going strong into their 65th season of amateur theatre and we take a look at the newly restored Cottam memorial, honouring a young pilot with a story that deserves to be remembered.
Of course, it wouldn’t be autumn without fashion that feels like a warm embrace – our style pages this issue are filled with earthy tones, rich textures and effortless layers to inspire your seasonal wardrobe.
So, pour yourself a coffee, find your cosiest corner and join us in exploring the very best of what our community – and this new season – has to offer.
Warm wishes,
Ali Gudgeon Editor

SETTING BLACKPOOL ALIGHT!
Olly Murs is no stranger to lighting up a stage, but illuminating an entire coastline with the flick of a switch was a whole new experience, writes Mary Lee-Slade
Sending a wave of colour and excitement rippling along the promenade, singer-songwriter and all-round showman Olly Murs was this year’s specially selected celebrity in charge of setting the legendary Blackpool Illuminations ablaze. And, as expected from the chart-topping charmer, he did it with dazzling style, bringing a touch of pop royalty to the iconic seaside spectacle.
Taking to the stage with rock stars Toploader and fellow The X Factor superstar Louisa Johnson, Olly Murs performed an hour-long set of hits before officially pressing the all-important button live, in front of a crowd of more than 20,000 fans.
Sitting down for an exclusive interview with Live Preston & Fylde ahead of the big event, Olly discusses just how much this moment means to him, his career to date, his new music and family life with a new baby on the way.
THE BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS HAVE A GREAT HISTORY AND I’M BUZZING TO BE UP THERE
Hi Olly! Thank you so much for joining us today. How does it feel to be turning on the legendary Blackpool Illuminations? It feels so good, you know! When you see the people who have done it in the past – some of the biggest actors, music stars and TV personalities – it makes me proud to be a part of it. The Blackpool Illuminations have a great history and I’m buzzing to be up there. Blackpool has been lit up since 1879 and is one of the UK’s most-loved destinations. What does the Great British seaside resort mean to you?
Blackpool’s been a big part of my career. I’ve been lucky enough for Madame Tussauds to do a waxwork of me and it’s lived in Blackpool all this time. I’ve visited in the past while touring with Robbie Williams and as a kid, too. I think at one point in your life, everyone travels to Blackpool to go on The Big One and take part in all the iconic things associated with it.
You’re set to share the stage with Louisa Johnson, who you’ve performed with previously. Which other artist have you thrived on collaborating with in the past?
Obviously, aside from Louisa, I would say Rizzle Kicks are up there. They were my first collaboration for my single Heart Skips a Beat and they were brilliant. It’s 14 years since that song was released, which is absolutely crazy.
Time flies when you’re having fun! With an audience of more than 20,000 due to watch you perform, how do you find the northern crowds?
Up north it’s so lively! It’s so different, but it’s hard to explain. You get different energies from different places. London is always special for me because it’s home and

my friends and family are there. But up north and especially Blackpool, people are definitely more up for it. I’m looking forward to the craziness!
Speaking of craziness, your new single Save Me is about a night out that descends into chaos. Tell me about your new music. Save Me is about having an argument with your partner, going out and then regretting it. I’ve always had a passion for ska and a love for cheeky, fun music and that shaped a lot of the early music in my career. My new song is about doing more of what I want to do, rather than what I think other people want me to do. The new album feels really exciting and Save Me is almost like ‘Olly Murs 2.0’. It’s a new version of me.
You’ve just completed your latest arena tour and you have your second baby on the way. How are you going to balance big events like this and touring with family life?
I don’t know! I’m just going to go with it. It’s all new, so we’re going to go into it with eyes wide open. We were so happy to have our daughter Madison and to have another baby feels even more amazing. Amelia, my wife, asked me this same question a few days
ago and I just said that we’ll make it work. We’ve got great family and great friends around us. We’re great together and solid in our relationship, so we can combat anything. Any gigs or big shows in the future, I’ll just do what Robbie Williams does and take my family with me!
MY NEW SONG IS ABOUT DOING MORE OF WHAT I WANT TO DO, RATHER THAN WHAT I THINK OTHER PEOPLE WANT ME TO DO
It’s time to get these questions ‘Wrapped Up’, so finally, as you’re switching on the Illuminations, what’s the most illuminating piece of advice you’ve ever been given? When it comes to this event, the advice would be – just don’t mess up pressing the button! Honestly, the amount of craftsmanship that goes into making these lights and the work involved – it’s a really special thing for the town. I just hope they’ve paid their energy bills and that when I switch it on there are no issues. Everyone’s been so supportive and I just know it’s going to be a great night.
Blackpool’s annual big Illuminations switch-on was a sparkling success, just as Olly predicted. His show-stopping set concluded with an upbeat rendition of his new single Save Me and climaxed with the pressing of the all-important button amid the roar of the crowd and streams of confetti. n
Blackpool Illuminations are free to visit and run from now until 4th January 2026.

EverythingPlants.co.uk is a new, sleek, online destination that has sparked a new era in garden inspiration
In the age of online convenience, it was perhaps only a matter of time before gardening caught up. For years, the world of plants remained stubbornly rooted in garden centres, local nurseries and the occasional RHS show. But with the launch of EverythingPlants.co.uk, the digital and horticultural worlds have been elegantly woven together, offering homeowners across the UK a direct line to the nation’s best hedging, shrubs, trees and perennials. This isn’t just another e-commerce site. EverythingPlants.co.uk is the retail arm of Bannister Hall Landscaping Supplies, a name synonymous with quality, design and horticultural expertise for over 25 years.
Based in Higher Walton, Preston, Bannister Hall has grown from a respected regional supplier into a national powerhouse of landscaping and plant cultivation. Today, it combines the pedigree of its privately owned nurseries with a cutting-edge digital platform – a blend that’s proving irresistible to garden enthusiasts, landscape

NURSERY LEGACY
NOW ONLINE
“From our very own nurseries, we grow, source and deliver more than 40,000 species of plants nationwide,” explains Alan Lovell, founder of Bannister Hall. “Our customers include everyone from homeowners to trade landscapers, property developers, local authorities and designers at the very top of the industry. The ambition behind EverythingPlants.co.uk was simple – to make the quality we’ve nurtured here in Lancashire available to anyone, anywhere in the UK.”
It’s a mission that resonates. For many households, choosing plants has long meant a weekend trip to a local garden centre, often limited by stock, season and convenience.
EverythingPlants.co.uk brings the same tactile excitement of plant shopping into a sleek digital space. Its product range is encyclopaedic from hedging for privacy, flowering shrubs, elegant pleached trees, colourful perennials, fruit and ornamental trees, decorative aggregates, composts, bark and professional-grade plant care products. All are DEFRA-compliant, grown to the highest horticultural standards and certified by the UK Plant Health Scheme –a reassurance in a market where plant quality can vary widely.
DELIVERING GREENERY NATIONWIDE
EverythingPlants.co.uk has also solved one of the great logistical headaches of gardening –delivery. Moving mature shrubs, pleached trees or bulk bags of compost is no small feat. The website offers specialist nationwide delivery direct to the customer’s door, making it possible to order anything from a single fruit tree to a full landscaping project with just a few clicks.
“Customers can also choose to collect from our nurseries, but the real game-changer is delivery,” says Jon Carlyle-Hollywood LLB (Hons), Chief Executive Officer of Bannister Hall. “Whether you’re in the Scottish Highlands, the Welsh Valleys or central London, we can deliver high-quality plants
directly to your home or site. For the first time, the scale and variety of a professional nursery are accessible nationwide.”
MORE THAN A SHOP: A PARTNER IN DESIGN
The story of EverythingPlants.co.uk is also the story of Bannister Hall itself. For more than two decades, the company has been at the forefront of landscaping supply. Its Higher Walton headquarters is more than a nursery, it’s a landscaping design centre, an inspirational creativity hub where ideas, products and expertise converge.
PLANTS BRING JOY, PRIVACY, STRUCTURE AND LIFE TO ANY OUTDOOR SPACE. OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE THAT JOY ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE
Visitors to Bannister Hall can browse its nurseries, speak to designers and explore everything from porcelain paving to pergolas, plants and sculptures.
PEDIGREE YOU CAN TRUST
What sets EverythingPlants.co.uk apart is pedigree. Behind the glossy website is a team of growers, designers and horticultural specialists with decades of practical experience. Bannister Hall Landscaping
Supplies has supplied projects ranging from private estates to public parks, from intimate gardens to large property developments with a level of trust few online retailers could claim.
GARDENING FOR THE MODERN AGE
The rise of EverythingPlants.co.uk also reflects a wider cultural shift. Gardening is no longer reserved for the retired or the green-fingered elite. The pandemic sparked a surge of interest in outdoor spaces and younger homeowners are embracing gardening as a lifestyle choice, a way to blend wellness, sustainability and creativity. With its easy-to-navigate categories, informative product descriptions and aspirational imagery, EverythingPlants. co.uk makes plant buying intuitive and exciting for a new generation. The website speaks as much to someone creating a balcony oasis with beautiful topiary, as it does to a seasoned landscaper designing a country estate with ornamental trees and vast metres of hedging.
For homeowners, the message is clear –the garden of your dreams is no longer confined to what’s in stock at the nearest centre. With EverythingPlants.co.uk thousands of options are at your fingertips, backed by the expertise of one of the UK’s most respected horticultural names.
In the words of founder and director Alan Lovell: “Plants bring joy, privacy, structure and life to any outdoor space. Our goal is to make that joy accessible to everyone, everywhere.” n

TIDY-UP TIME
October heralds the start of the big garden tidy-up getting plants and containers ready for winter
As autumn progresses, October is the best month to plant trees, shrubs and perennials as the soil still has some warmth, which will help to get them established. If it’s autumn colour you are after, conifers can provide fabulous splashes of orange, blue or purple at this time of year. They are cone-bearing seed plants and include cedars, cypresses, firs, junipers, larches, pines, spruces and yews. Whilst being practical and useful, conifers are also visually stunning and can transform a garden into something quite magnificent. They are easy to look after and although they need good drainage and water to get them established, after that they need little attention as they are pretty disease resistant and maintenance free. With several hundred varieties of conifers available in the UK, there is one to suit every type of garden and they look just as good in a container on a patio or balcony as they do in a more spacious setting.
Dormant bare root roses are now available as well and can provide a cost-effective way of creating a mini rose garden for the coming year. Before planting, soak the roots in water and then mix some good quality compost into the soil and make sure the plants are watered well once planted.
An added bonus of growing roses is that they produce amazing rosehips around this time of year – providing a food source for wildlife and some autumn interest in the garden. From the wild dog roses of the hedgerow to ornamental hybrid teas in the garden, hips contain rose seeds and their

bright colours attract the birds to eat and distribute them. But some roses develop far more colourful hips, in larger numbers, that last much longer than others such as R rugosa with its fragrant flowers that are followed by red hips looking like cherry tomatoes.
Roses with exceptional hips are also found among the older, classic shrub roses like R Penelope which is a long-flowering hybrid musk with richly scented, creamy-pink flowers and uniquely coral pink hips and R Scharlachglut that has huge numbers of pear-shaped red hips following scarlet flowers. Rosehips can also be used as a herbal tea – they are a great source of vitamin C and can also have anti-inflammatory properties. n
OCTOBER: TOP TIPS FROM THE RHS
• Move tender plants into a greenhouse or indoors
• Move or plant trees and shrubs
• Cut back perennials that have died down
• Divide herbaceous perennials such as hosta and iris
• Divide established rhubarb crowns to create new plants
• Plant out spring cabbages
• Harvest apples, pears, grapes and nuts
• Prune climbing roses
• Finish collecting seeds from the garden to sow next year
• Last chance to mow lawns and trim hedges in mild areas

Celebrate the season with kitchen accessories that bring warmth and charm
From ceramics to textiles, autumn tones and textures create a homely atmosphere perfect for cooking, hosting and gathering together.
Autumn is a season defined by comfort and character and the kitchen becomes a natural hub. Accessories inspired by the shifting landscape make cooking and dining more inviting. Mugs are an ideal place to start as they mark the daily pause for tea or coffee. In autumn they become more than just vessels. Stoneware mugs in autumnal colours add depth to the kitchen while reactive glazes and hand thrown shapes create individuality. The tactile quality of a solid mug enhances the ritual of holding something warm on cool mornings.
Plates bowls and serving dishes follow suit with earthy palettes that echo seasonal produce. Think deep ochre paired with soft creams or smoky greys alongside muted greens. Matte finishes have a contemporary
feel while glossy glazes bring vibrancy to the table. Serving platters in natural ceramic or glassware with subtle amber tones make everyday meals feel abundant. Layering tableware in mixed textures is an easy way to bring richness without needing a full set.
Textiles are essential for an autumn kitchen
as they soften and warm hard surfaces. Linen napkins in warm neutrals or checked cotton tea towels in rich shades bring seasonal accents into daily use. Table runners in woven wool or soft brushed cotton add a welcoming note while also being practical for family dining. Aprons in natural fabrics such as canvas or washed linen not only protect clothing but also contribute to the aesthetic of a kitchen rooted in craft.
Small accessories have a big impact in creating a seasonal mood. Wooden chopping boards left on display add rustic charm while also being functional. Ceramic storage jars in earthy tones keep ingredients organised while enhancing the visual appeal of open shelving. Candles in simple holders introduce a sense of ritual to evening meals while lantern style lighting evokes the soft glow of autumn evenings. Even glassware can shift with the season by incorporating amber hues or thicker shapes that feel more grounded. Together these pieces celebrate the textures and tones of autumn. By choosing accessories that combine function with warmth the kitchen becomes more than a working space. It becomes a place to gather reflect and enjoy the season at home. n
CREATE COSY
From rustic panelling to layered lighting, discover how easy it is to refresh your interiors with the latest autumn DIY trends
As the evenings draw in and the air turns crisp, our homes naturally become sanctuaries of comfort. Autumn is the season to embrace rich textures, warm palettes and small but impactful DIY updates that transform a space from summer fresh to autumn cosy. This year, interior trends are all about creating calm, characterful rooms with easy, affordable projects you can tackle yourself.
Earthy tones and natureinspired palettes
Say goodbye to the bright whites of summer –autumn calls for earthy neutrals, russet reds, forest greens and deep ochres. A simple way to update your space is with paint. Accent
walls in clay or terracotta shades instantly warm up a room, while muted greens bring in a sense of calm. For those not ready to commit to a full paint job, accessories such as throws, cushions and lampshades in autumn hues can refresh your space with minimal effort.
Textured walls and panelling
DIY wall panelling continues to trend and autumn is the perfect time to try it. From sleek half-wall panelling in a hallway to full feature walls in the living room, it adds depth and character. Painted in darker shades –think midnight blue or deep olive – it creates a cocooning effect ideal for the season. For a softer touch, limewash paints and textured finishes are having a moment, offering a rustic, handmade look that works beautifully in bedrooms and cosy corners.
Layered lighting
As natural light fades earlier in the day, layered lighting becomes essential. This autumn, the focus is on creating warmth with soft-glow bulbs, statement lampshades and even DIY lanterns made from frosted glass or rattan. Fairy lights and LED candles are simple
projects to weave into shelves, jars, or around mirrors for an inviting glow.
Natural materials and sustainable touches
DIY projects using reclaimed wood, stone and rattan are trending, reflecting the growing demand for sustainable interiors. Coffee tables made from upcycled pallets, shelving with raw wooden brackets, or even dried floral arrangements are easy weekend projects that add personality and eco-friendly style.
Seasonal styling
Finally, autumn interiors wouldn’t be complete without seasonal décor. Create your own rustic centrepiece with pumpkins, pinecones and candles, or craft an autumn wreath for your front door. These small DIY touches not only look beautiful but also bring a sense of ritual and celebration into the home.
This autumn, interiors are about slowing down, getting creative and adding warmth where it matters most. With just a few DIY tweaks, your home can feel like the cosiest place to be. n

CONTEMPORARY COMFORT
For nearly two decades, style, comfort and individuality have been at the heart of this interiors success story, writes Emma Brereton. Photography: Michael Porter
Pad Contemporary Living, based in Poulton-le-Fylde, has been a destination for customers who value originality, hand-picked quality, personal service and products that stand the test of time. Owned by Paula Baxter, the longevity of the business has been down to repeat clients and personal recommendations, testament to Paula’s commitment to treating people with care and respect.
“I believe in excellent customer service and treat people how they want to be treated,” says Paula. “That has been at the heart since day one.”
FOR ME, IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT SELLING FURNITURE –IT’S ABOUT THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE
Unlike large retail chains, Pad offers a truly personal approach. Paula curates every collection herself, while a dedicated delivery and installation team ensures that items are delivered, assembled and perfectly placed –all included in the price. Customers don’t just leave with a piece of furniture; they leave with peace of mind.
Paula explained: “For me, it’s not just about selling furniture – it’s about the whole experience. I want customers to feel
confident that every piece is handled with care, so they can simply enjoy their home.”
One of Pad’s greatest strengths lies in its ability to offer customers something distinctive. Paula chooses pieces that are contemporary yet timeless, ensuring that every item feels one-of-a-kind.
“Customers want their home to reflect their personality,” she adds. “That means choosing furniture and accessories that are not only functional but have character and style.”
Over the years, she has built strong relationships with designers and manufacturers across the UK and Europe, bringing world-class quality to the Fylde coast. Brands stocked include Calligaris, Nicoletti, Calia Italia, Torelli Furniture, Shankar and Furniture Link –names renowned for craftsmanship, style and comfort.
As autumn arrives, Paula highlights a shift in trends. “We’re seeing people move away from grey tones and towards colour.”
“Sage green is one of the most in-demand shades this season – soft, versatile and perfect for creating warm, inviting spaces,” she adds.
Pad Contemporary Living are always ready to guide customers through the latest trends, ensuring choices remain stylish for years to come.
“It’s about balance,” explains Paula. “People want fresh ideas, but they also want to know their furniture won’t feel dated a year later. That’s where our passion for what we sell makes a difference.”
Style is only part of the story at Pad –comfort and wellbeing are equally important. The store works with a specialist mattress supplier in Yorkshire, producing mattresses with around 4,000 pocket springs for exceptional support. Many also feature silver fibres, known for their healing qualities, ensuring customers can enjoy the ultimate night’s sleep.
Paula adds: “People often underestimate the difference a high-quality mattress makes to daily life. Investing in a quality, supportive mattress is actually a long-term investment in your wellbeing, offering
benefits that extend to better mood, concentration and physical health – it can even reduce snoring!”
Pad also offers fitted bedroom options and bespoke solutions that make the most of every home, including a new display in store from German bedroom manufacturer, Disselkamp.
WE’RE SEEING PEOPLE MOVE AWAY FROM GREY TONES AND TOWARDS COLOUR
For other areas of the home, Pad offers bespoke media walls, available in any size or colour crafted in partnership with renowned Italian supplier Battistella. Once designed, Pad’s expert joiners take care of the installation, delivering a flawless, seamless finish.
To complete the look, the store also offers carefully curated lighting from leading brands such as Searchlight and Illuminati, providing the perfect ambience, adding both style and atmosphere.
This level of customisation means customers can design their spaces around how they live, whether it’s a bold centrepiece in the living room or a fitted bedroom that maximises every inch of storage.
The strength of Pad Contemporary Living lies not only in its products but in its relationships. Customers return again and again because they know they’ll be listened to, guided and supported. From a single piece of furniture to a whole-room, or even home transformation, Paula and her team ensure every project feels personal.
“We’re not just selling furniture,” Paula says. “We’re helping people realise their vision and create homes where they feel comfortable, relaxed and proud to welcome others.”
With new autumn collections now in store, there’s no better time to explore what Pad has to offer. From bold Italian sofas and contemporary dining sets to bespoke fitted solutions, Pad Contemporary Living is ready to help you find something special. n

Halloween is the perfect excuse to give your home a seasonal makeover
Whether you prefer a playful approach or something with a touch of gothic drama Halloween is a chance to get creative and embrace the magic of autumn. Decorating for Halloween does not mean you need to transform your home into a haunted house - a few thoughtful touches can set the mood!
Start with lighting since it can completely change the atmosphere. Fairy lights in warm tones look wonderful draped along shelves
STYLE
and mirrors while candles in glass jars cast a flickering glow that feels both cosy and mysterious. If you want something more dramatic swap out your usual lampshades for darker colours or add a few battery operated lanterns. Light is one of the simplest ways to bring in that Halloween charm without spending much.
Pumpkins are a classic choice and they never go out of style. Carving them can be fun but if you would rather avoid the mess, there are endless other options. Paint them in black white or metallic shades or simply leave them natural for a rustic look. A few grouped together on a mantelpiece or doorstep make a bold statement. Mini pumpkins and gourds also work beautifully on tables or windowsills.
Textiles are another easy way to set the scene. Swap out cushions or throws for ones in deep autumnal shades like burnt orange, forest green or burgundy. A blanket with a subtle plaid pattern can feel seasonal without being too obvious. If you enjoy a more whimsical touch look for cushions with bats, cats or moon motifs. It is all about layering textures to create a sense of warmth.
Decorating your walls and doors can add a little extra fun. A wreath made from dried leaves twigs or black feathers is a lovely way to welcome guests. Paper bats cut out and arranged to look like they are flying across a wall make a big impact for very little effort. Even small details like swapping your usual artwork for Halloween themed prints or postcards can shift the mood.
MINI PUMPKINS AND GOURDS ALSO WORK BEAUTIFULLY ON TABLES OR WINDOWSILLS
Finally, do not forget scent which is often overlooked but makes a huge difference. A candle with notes of pumpkin, spice, apple or vanilla can make the whole house smell like autumn. Incense or essential oil diffusers can also add an extra layer of atmosphere. When your home looks and smells like the season it becomes a place where everyone wants to linger.
Decorating for Halloween is not about perfection it is about enjoying the fun. Mix novelty pieces with cosy touches and you will have a home that feels a little bit spooky but also warm and welcoming. n

EAR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW
Untreated hearing loss can cause fatigue, withdrawal and cognitive decline, but Preston Hearing Care Centre offers trusted, expert care to restore clarity, confidence and connection
There’s a peculiar human tendency to treat hearing loss like that odd kitchen drawer we all have – the one filled with broken gadgets and mystery keys we’ll “get around to sorting one day.” We smile and nod through muffled conversations, bluff our way through social gatherings and tell ourselves it’s not that bad. Until one day, we realise we’ve been missing more than just words – we’ve been missing life’s rich soundtrack.
The consequences of this delay game are more serious than most realise. Like a slowly leaking pipe, untreated hearing loss causes unseen damage long before the effects become obvious. Our brains exhaust themselves compensating for unclear signals. Listening effort is incredibly tiring. The mental fatigue after social events isn’t just tiredness – it’s your neural pathways working overtime. Social withdrawal often follows, not from lack of interest, but from the sheer effort required to participate.
FREE HEARING HEALTH CHECK
The latest invisible hearing aid technology. Up to 40% less expensive than other high street hearing care providers.
Yet the solution is simple. Modern hearing technology has quietly undergone a revolution while we weren’t paying attention. Today’s devices are miracles of smart technology that adapt seamlessly to different environments from quiet cafés to bustling family gatherings.
The truth is there’s never been a better time to address hearing concerns. With discreet designs and intuitive functionality, today’s hearing solutions don’t just restore sound –they restore connection.

TODAY’S DEVICES ARE MIRACLES OF SMART TECHNOLOGY THAT ADAPT SEAMLESSLY TO DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS FROM QUIET CAFÉS TO BUSTLING FAMILY GATHERINGS

The technology adapts to your life, whether you’re enjoying quiet reading time or navigating a busy restaurant.

can drive partners away, unintentionally reinforcing the fear of rejection.
AVOIDANT: These people value independence to the point of emotional distance. Often raised by care-givers who were emotionally unavailable or dismissive, they learned to rely on themselves and suppress emotional needs. In relationships they may struggle to express feelings or needs, have a fear of being controlled or smothered, keep partners at arm’s length and withdraw during conflict. They may appear confident and self-reliant but often avoid vulnerability, which can create barriers to deep emotional connection.
MIND MATTERS
From clingy to cold – therapeutic coach Lynn Scholes explains what your attachment style says about you
So often when working with clients, I explain attachment styles and everything seems to fall into place. Your attachment style offers an explanation as to why you behave the way you do in relationships, which may be personal or business. Understanding attachment styles and what drives them, gives you the opportunity for change. They are adaptive behaviours rather than character flaws. Human beings are wired for connection. From the moment we’re born, we rely on others – first for survival, then for emotional development. How those early needs are met forms the basis of something psychologists call attachment styles. These patterns shape the way we relate to others throughout our lives, especially in close relationships.
Understanding attachment styles can offer powerful insights into our behaviour and help us build healthier, more fulfilling relationships. Attachment theory was first developed by
psychologist John Bowlby and later expanded by Mary Ainsworth. It suggests that the quality of the bond between a child and their primary care-giver forms the blueprint for how the child will engage in relationships later in life.
In adulthood, attachment styles influence how we perceive intimacy, express needs, handle conflict and cope with emotional distress. While attachment tendencies can be deeply ingrained, they are not fixed. With awareness and effort, they can evolve. There are four primary attachment styles:
SECURE: Securely attached individuals tend to have a healthy balance between intimacy and independence. They are comfortable giving and receiving affection, expressing needs and supporting their partners. In relationships they are typically trusting and trustworthy, good communicators and comfortable with vulnerability. They are capable of resolving conflict constructively and can help create a stable and nurturing emotional climate.
ANXIOUS: These individuals crave closeness and reassurance but often fear abandonment. Their early care-givers may have been inconsistent, loving at times but neglectful or unavailable at others. As a result, these individuals may grow up unsure if their emotional needs will be met. In adult relationships, anxious individuals might seek constant validation and attention, over-analyse interactions or struggle with jealousy or insecurity. They can become overly dependent on their partner which
FEARFUL AVOIDANT (ALSO CALLED DISORGANISED):
Those with a fearfulavoidant attachment style display a confusing mix of behaviours. They desire closeness but are simultaneously afraid of it. This style often develops in response to trauma or chaotic care-giving where the care-giver was a source of both comfort and fear. Adults with this attachment style often experience intense emotional highs and lows, push partners away while yearning for connection, struggle with trust and intimacy and have difficulty regulating emotions. They can be unpredictable and turbulent and may inadvertently repeat cycles of trauma without realising it.
Attachment styles often determine how we handle conflict, communicate and deal with emotional needs. Can attachment styles change? Yes – attachment styles are not destiny. They are adaptive strategies formed in early life, but they can shift with self-awareness, therapy and healthy relationship experiences.
Whether you’re navigating your own pattern or trying to understand a partner’s, developing insight into attachment can transform the way you relate to others. Healthy relationships don’t require perfect attachment, but they do require awareness, empathy and a willingness to grow. When we understand where we come from, we are better equipped to build the connections we truly want and deserve. n

Gut health is key in the colder months as around 70 per cent of our immune system lives in the gut. Warming dishes like miso soup, hearty stews or a spoonful of sauerkraut make meals feel intentional while supporting a balanced microbiome. On Sundays, I like to make a big pot of vegetable and bean curry, it fills the kitchen with warmth and smells amazing and I can enjoy it all week as a base for a few recipes.
NUTRITION WITH KELI
Keli Thompson explains how you can nourish your body through the autumn switch-over
As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, my food changes too. Autumn isn’t about clinging to summer, it’s about meals that warm, nourish and make the season feel alive. That crisp, light salad that felt perfect in July suddenly doesn’t hit the same spot in October. It’s not just a mood change, it’s my body showing it’s adapting to the season. Leaning into this change and choosing foods that feel comforting keeps me fuelled and supports my health and I’ve started noticing how much more satisfying meals feel when they match the season.
Healthy eating in autumn is about embracing the season with more colour, more comfort and more nutrients. Nature’s already done the hard work – we just need to fill our plates with what’s in season. I love roasting root vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes and parsnips. They give slow-release energy and even help with serotonin production, which feels especially good as the days get shorter.
Citrus fruits, which I usually associate with summer, actually peak in winter. Oranges, grapefruits and satsumas deliver vitamin C when our bodies need it most. I like keeping a bowl of satsumas on the kitchen side, it’s always an easy way to remind myself what to snack on, whilst adding autumnal colours to the room.
Shorter days mean less sunlight, which can affect vitamin D levels. Including foods like oily fish, eggs or fortified milks helps support mood, immunity and bone health, even when the sky is grey. I also love using the cold, wet days as a chance to practise a bit more mindful eating by sitting down, savouring each bite and tuning in to how my body feels.
Spices add both flavour and warmth. Cinnamon, ginger and turmeric help with circulation and have anti-inflammatory properties. I often sprinkle cinnamon on baked apples, stir turmeric into soups or sip ginger tea for a little lift.
A few practical habits help me stay on track during autumn:
• Batch-roast seasonal vegetables at the start of the week (parsnip, sweet potato, butternut squash)
• Add nuts or seeds to soups and salads
• Keep jars of warming spices handy
• Make a big pot of curry or stew and freeze portions
• Experiment with seasonal grains like barley, farro or spelt for variety
• Adding fresh herbs or trying a new vegetable each week, make meals feel exciting and seasonal
Healthy eating in autumn is about welcoming the season, nourishing your body and enjoying all the warmth, colour and comfort it brings. Taking a few moments to create meals I truly enjoy makes the season feel cosier, more mindful and memorable. n

MOUTH-BODY CONNECTION
Dental specialists Renovo reveal that oral health is not just connected to your body health – it is your body health
When you think about inflammation, you might imagine sore joints or aching muscles. But what if the real source was hiding in your mouth – quietly fuelling disease throughout your body?
Revolutionising dentistry, leading private practice Renovo has always been at the forefront of the industry. They reveal that your mouth could be the hidden source of inflammation and is the key to total overall health.
Here’s what most people don’t realise:
• 90 per cent of people have gum disease, often without obvious symptoms.
• Oral bacteria can trigger up to 50 per cent
of heart attacks and strokes.
• Gum disease makes you 70 per cent more likely to develop Alzheimer’s.
• 95 per cent of diabetics also suffer from gum disease.
• Even cancer, infertility, autoimmune diseases and high blood pressure have been linked to oral bacteria and chronic inflammation.
Dr Usman Riaz, who heads up the Renovo team, explains: “Inflammation is at the root of almost every major disease and your mouth is one of the most overlooked sources.”
WE’RE NOT JUST FIXING TEETH. WE’RE SUPPORTING YOUR WHOLE BODY HEALTH
THE SCIENCE: FROM MOUTH TO BODY
Research shows that porphyromonas gingivalis, the bacteria behind gum disease, has been found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. In animal studies, these bacteria caused:
• Brain inflammation
• Neuron damage
• Alzheimer’s-like symptoms When scientists blocked these bacterial
toxins, inflammation reduced and neurons began to heal. But the mouth doesn’t just connect to your heart and brain, it connects to – and directly shapes – your entire body health.
“Every swallow of saliva carries bacteria from your mouth throughout your system,” says Dr Riaz. “Your oral microbiome influences your immune system, metabolic health and inflammation pathways. If your mouth harbours harmful bacteria, they disrupt immune balance and fuel chronic inflammation.”
WHY THIS MATTERS
When your gums are inflamed, bacteria and toxins enter your bloodstream every day. This causes chronic low-grade inflammation.
“It’s like having a leaking toxic tap in your mouth, fuelling inflammation throughout your body 24/7,” adds Dr Riaz. “If you want to heal your body, you must start with your mouth. Oral health is body health.”
RENOVO DENTAL: BEYOND TRADITIONAL DENTISTRY
At Renovo Dental, they don’t guess – they test. Using advanced non-invasive saliva testing, the team identifies specific bacterial burdens causing hidden inflammation, with a focus on restoring full body health through oral health optimisation.
Dr Riaz says: “We focus on uncovering the root causes of disease and many of those causes begin in the mouth, impacting the entire body and immune system.”
THE SILENT THREAT OF OUTDATED DENTAL WORK
Beyond gum disease, old dental restorations can silently fuel inflammation. Fillings, crowns and implants degrade over time, leaking metals and toxins into gums and bone, triggering immune reactions and systemic inflammation.
REVISION DENTISTRY: HEALING THE MOUTH TO HEAL THE BODY
Dr Riaz specialises in revision dentistry, removing old, toxic restorations and replacing them with biocompatible materials that protect immune health, reduce inflammation and support overall body integrity.
“We’re not just fixing teeth. We’re supporting your whole body health,” he says. “Your mouth is the gateway to your entire
body health. Stop treating symptoms –start fixing the root causes. Your health deserves that.”
YOUR MOUTH IS THE GATEWAY TO YOUR ENTIRE BODY HEALTH. STOP TREATING SYMPTOMS –START FIXING THE ROOT CAUSES. YOUR HEALTH DESERVES THAT
WHY THIS MATTERS
• Oral health = body health = systemic health
• Oral bacteria = body inflammation
• Gum inflammation = chronic body inflammation
• Healthy mouth = healthier heart, brain, immune system and body
Renovo is one of the very few practices in the UK to introduce biomimetic techniques and materials. Fractured or damaged teeth can be restored by using biomimetic materials to build them up – the materials and techniques ensure the restorative work can last for decades.
“This is micro-invasive dentistry that preserves as much of the tooth structure as possible by using scientifically developed, bio-compatible, metal-free materials,” says Dr Riaz. “These latest advances in dental technology have changed the way we view restorative dentistry.”
For nervous patients the biomimetic approach will revolutionise the way they view a visit to their dental practice. For the generation that are now experiencing failing teeth and receding gums, where in the past removal of teeth was the only answer, bonding technology and new bio-materials along with gum restoration, has given damaged teeth a new lease of life.
By adopting these latest biomimetic philosophies and having all the specialist techniques and materials available makes Renovo pioneers in their approach to dentistry. Sustaining the longevity of teeth is the primary aim of Dr Usman Riaz and his specialist in-house team at Renovo Dental.
“In very few visits patients can be transformed and because of the unique technology available to us, they leave with a bespoke smile that has longevity.
“It really is transformative dentistry. Your mouth is the gateway to your entire body health. Stop treating symptoms – start fixing the root causes. Your health deserves that.’’ n

In 2019, a simple idea shared among a group of friends blossomed into something truly special – Saree Spree, an event born out of love for sarees, stories and shared heritage. The intention was humble: “Let’s all wear our sarees and come together.” In a world where traditional attire is often tucked away in wardrobes, this was a call to celebrate the grace, beauty and history of the saree.
The first gathering was hosted in a small hall generously offered by the Xaverian Missionaries, with Father Cosmito’s kind support. Around 55 women attended that inaugural event, each draped in a saree that carried a personal story. Some wore their wedding sarees, others the ones passed down by mothers or tied to meaningful milestones. The room was not just full of colours – it was filled with memories, emotions and narratives that transcended

generations. That day, as we left the hall, it felt like we had planted a seed.
2020 was a year of silence, lockdowns and longing. Like much of the world,
Saree Spree was placed on pause as the pandemic reshaped our lives. But the spirit never left us.
In 2021, still under the cloud of restrictions, Saree Spree returned in a smaller, socially distanced format with just over 50 attendees. The theme was ‘Bride of India,’ and it became one of the most beautiful moments in our journey.
AROUND 55 WOMEN ATTENDED THAT INAUGURAL EVENT, EACH DRAPED IN A SAREE THAT CARRIED A PERSONAL STORY
Our young girls took centre stage dressed as brides from all corners of India – Bengal, Maharashtra, Bihar, Kerala and beyond –showcasing both Hindu and Christian wedding traditions, as well as Muslim bridal grace.
Each costume was a tribute to regional identity and womanhood.
Anchored by Anitha Rangaswamy and Nisha Kaura, the evening featured performances, games and communitypowered joy. It reminded us that even in challenging times, culture and creativity find a way.
In 2022, uncertainty still loomed – but so did determination. Inspired by the Royal Ascot’s saree movement, Saree Spree adopted the theme ‘Headgear,’ encouraging women to experiment with stylish pairings of sarees and fascinators, turbans and headpieces.
Held in a local village hall, this edition drew over 125 women, many travelling from Manchester, Birmingham and London. The creativity was dazzling, but even more heartwarming was the sense of connection.
Saree Spree was no longer just a get-together –it was evolving into a platform. A cultural thread that wove women together in identity and pride.
In 2023, Saree Spree moved to the grand Park Hall Hotel. With over 180 participants, the energy was electrifying. The theme was ‘Retro’ and women showed up in vintage styles, classic drapes and Bollywoodinspired looks.
All entertainment was delivered by the women attending – making them not just guests, but contributors. This strengthened our bond as a community.
That year, Magic Motion Media captured the event with cinematic brilliance. Their
trailer felt like a Netflix feature – stylish, emotive, unforgettable.
At the heart of this movement stood a team of passionate women: Barkha Rani, Upasana Chopra (from the US), Anitha Rangaswamy, Nisha Kaura, Rinku Patel, Priyanka Mathur, Swati Sonwalkar and Shradha Rungta – each juggling careers and families while pouring love into Saree Spree.
The year 2025 marked our fifth
SAREE SPREE HAS BECOME A MOVEMENT –BRINGING TOGETHER CULTURE, FASHION, HEALTH AND COMMUNITY IN THE NORTH WEST
anniversary – five incredible years of Saree Spree. Held in July, with over 200 attendees, the event celebrated the theme of ‘Fusion’. It was a blend of draping styles, fabrics and global fashion influences.
From sneakers paired with silk to denim blouses and Western accessories with sarees, the creativity was awe-inspiring. Even the most traditionally dressed women explored new styles with joy.
Participants came from all backgrounds, including many non-Asian women who embraced the saree spirit. Saree Spree was now a memory-making tradition – spoken of in homes across the UK and India, featured in magazines and celebrated on BBC Radio.
More than just an event, Saree Spree has become a movement bringing together culture, fashion, health and community in the North West whilst honouring the elegance of tradition and promoting conversations around wellbeing and empowerment.

A tragic crash in 1952 claimed the life of Canberra Bomber test pilot Tommy Evans, but his bravery lives on in Cottam. Now, thanks to a painstaking restoration, the memorial in his honour has been given a new lease of life, as John Coward explores
When the Cottam Hall housing development was first planned by the Central Lancashire New Town Development Corporation, public art was seen as an important part of the community’s identity. Local artists were commissioned to create pieces reflecting the area’s heritage, with several sculptures installed across Cottam.
Over the years, many of these artworks have sadly been lost or damaged through theft, vandalism and decades of exposure to the elements. One memorial in particular has a poignant backstory, marking the site of a Canberra Bomber crash in 1952, which claimed the life of test pilot Thomas
Benjamin Oswyn Evans, known as Tommy. In the years since, a housing development now covers the original crash site – yet Canberra Lane, nearby, was named in his honour and stands as a poignant tribute.
The memorial originally featured two groups of three statues, carved from reclaimed sandstone farm gateposts, representing a pilot, jet engine and aircraft controls. This was the work of local
sculptor David Cudworth. Weathering and vandalism took their toll, one pilot’s head was removed and other details became worn beyond recognition over the next 30 years.
The day of the crash
On 25th March 1952, Tommy, an experienced test pilot for English Electric, took off from Samlesbury Aerodrome to deliver a brand-new Mk.2 Canberra Bomber (call sign WD991) to Warton Aerodrome on its maiden test flight. Witnesses reported the aircraft flying “low and fast” over Fulwood before suddenly diving steeply and crashing into farmland near Valentines Lane, Cottam, at 400mph. The sudden impact completely destroyed the aircraft.
OVER THE YEARS, MANY OF THESE ARTWORKS HAVE SADLY BEEN LOST OR DAMAGED THROUGH THEFT, VANDALISM AND DECADES OF EXPOSURE TO THE ELEMENTS
Tommy’s flying career was distinguished. Serving in the RAF from 1937 to 1950, he rose to Flight Lieutenant before joining English Electric, logging more than 57 hours on the Canberra Bomber. Despite an extensive investigation, the cause of the crash was never confirmed, although a possible jammed elevator was considered.
Born in Wales, Tommy married Lorna Franz in India in 1945, where he had been stationed during the war. They returned to the UK in 1946 but later separated. He was buried in Lytham St Annes Park Cemetery with full military honours, attended by leading figures from the aviation world
and government. Surprisingly, his grave remained unmarked for decades, until in 1992 his son Bryan, visiting from Australia, commissioned a headstone.
DESPITE AN EXTENSIVE INVESTIGATION, THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH WAS NEVER CONFIRMED, ALTHOUGH A POSSIBLE JAMMED ELEVATOR WAS CONSIDERED
Restoring the memorial
In 2019 Lea & Cottam Parish Councillors, David Lambert and myself, looked at the feasibility of restoring the statues and moving them to a safer and more prominent position. Community Infrastructure Levy funding was made available to complete the project. Local sculptor Shawn Williamson was commissioned to replace the missing pilot’s head and restore the weatherworn features.
On 4th August 2025, the refurbished memorial was officially reopened by the Mayor of Preston, Councillor Susan Whittam, complete with new notice boards telling its story.
Although Bryan Evans could not attend from Australia, he sent heartfelt thanks to the Parish Council for preserving the memory of his father’s service and sacrifice. Today, the memorial stands not just as a piece of public art, but as a lasting tribute to a skilled pilot whose life was cut short in the service of British aviation – and to a community’s commitment to remembering its history. n

Early Life & Aviation Career
Thomas Benjamin Oswyn Evans, affectionately known as “Tommy”, was a seasoned pilot with the RAF. He accrued nearly 2,480 flying hours, 57 of which were logged on the Canberra bomber since his first flight in February 1951. As a display pilot for English Electric, he gained renown for his skill and composure – most notably during the Farnborough Air Show in 1951, where he artfully managed a burst tyre caused by brake failure.

CHARITY BALL TO HELP UNPAID CARERS ACROSS BLACKPOOL
Inspired by a local DIY SOS project eight years ago at Beaverbrooks House, Gillian Booth felt compelled to help and that’s how she got involved with the Blackpool Carers Centre. Gillian helps organise the annual fundraising Charity Ball and is now on her fourth one, personally naming this year’s Cinderella Ball. Gillian explained: “All the money goes to Beaverbrooks House so that these children can enjoy respite and just be children again.
“I have had a lot of help from my friends and colleagues where I work. Hopefully the ball will be a sell out as we need to raise as much money as possible. There are now 2,587 children registered at Beaverbrooks House and some are as young as five so it really is a worthwhile cause.”
The Cinderella Ball takes place on Saturday 25th October at the Clifton Arms Hotel in Lytham and tickets are priced at £70pp. Guests will be treated to a fairytale fizz reception, a delectable dinner and entertainment from Tony Benedict, Flip and The Versions. All proceeds will go to Blackpool Carers Centre.

SHAPING FUTURES
A new government-backed initiative is encouraging residents across the Ribble Valley and the wider region to ‘share their home to shape a child’s future’ by stepping forward as foster carers
Run by five local North West councils, Foster With Us is part of a new initiative being delivered through a regional network of fostering hubs, with one of the latest opening at the Livesey Family Hub in Blackburn in 2024. These hubs were created in response to findings from the Independent Review of Children’s Social Care in England, which revealed that some children were waiting over a year for a foster placement.
The review highlighted a critical shortfall in the number of foster carers and called for an urgent streamlining of the fostering recruitment process. It concluded that without major recruitment efforts, the
fostering system would struggle to meet rising demand. In response, the first foster hub was established in 2023, with more following – including the Foster With Us hub, which has already made an impact.
Pam Price the service lead at the Foster With Us hub, explains the scale of the issue:
“Each year, around 38,000 children come into care in the UK, and to meet this demand we need 9,000 more foster carers by 2026. The review highlighted that foster care had been overlooked and underfunded and this needed to see change.
The recruitment hubs are where potential carers can get advice and support. From initial enquiries to training and matching,
the new approach aims to simplify the process and ensure foster carers are given the training and skills much earlier in their fostering journey and are better prepared to support children in the care system.
Pam adds: “We want to dispel a number of myths that surround foster care that sometimes put people off taking the first step.”
To become a foster parent:
• You DON’T have to own your own home
• You CAN be a single parent
• You DON’T have to be financially ‘well off’
You DO get financial support from the local authority
• You CAN have a job AND become a foster carer
“To date in the past 12 months we have recruited 100 new foster carers so we are very much on target,” adds Pam.
“We are also reaching a much younger audience. You have to be over 21 to foster and we have seen a surge in enquiries from people in their 20s and 30s.
“Our main message is that foster carers are giving a child a stable home and a stable future.”
The scheme is about building strong, local networks of carers who are fully supported and trained, making fostering a more viable and sustainable choice for more families.
FOSTERING CAN BE CHALLENGING AT TIMES BUT IT IS ALSO EXTREMELY REWARDING
Training is a key aspect of the revised scheme and to help speed up the process training begins at the beginning of the process: “Potential carers are teamed up with foster care buddies who are ambassadors –they can discuss and talk about the realities of fostering.”
With lives waiting to be changed, the message from the North West’s Foster With Us hub is clear – now is the time to come forward.
Pam concludes: “Fostering can be challenging at times but it is also extremely rewarding.” n

HELPING PRESTON’S ROUGH SLEEPERS
Homelessness is on the rise in Preston, echoing a national trend that shows no signs of slowing. We look into how health inequalities are being tackled locally
The causes of homelessness are complex – ranging from the deepening housing crisis to mental health issues and substance misuse – but the consequences are stark. More people than ever are sleeping rough, without access to basic necessities like shelter, nutritious food, or healthcare.
In response, the Rough Sleeper Health Initiative, spearheaded by the Greater Preston Primary Care Network (a collaboration of local GPs), is taking a practical and compassionate approach to addressing the needs of some of the city’s most vulnerable residents. Supporting around 100 individuals, the initiative brings together health and social care.
Launched as a pilot and funded by Preston City Council, the service is based at the Foxton Day Centre – a welcoming, safe space for those experiencing homelessness. The initiative operates alongside the centre’s breakfast programme, allowing service users
MALNUTRITION, DIABETES, HEART DISEASE AND OTHER DIET-RELATED ILLNESSES ARE COMMON AMONG THE HOMELESS POPULATION AND POOR DIET CAN WORSEN PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH
to enjoy a hot meal while receiving support in a friendly, non-judgemental setting.
Healthcare is provided on site by a dedicated GP and practice nurse who offer consultations, health checks, treatments and referrals – right where people already feel safe and supported. This direct access removes some of the biggest barriers rough sleepers face when engaging with mainstream health services, such as stigma, inflexible appointment systems and transportation issues.
Since its inception, the team has delivered over 700 consultations, helping individuals manage chronic conditions, address mental health challenges and access wider support networks.
For people sleeping rough or living in temporary accommodation, consistent access to nutritious meals can be life-changing. Malnutrition, diabetes, heart disease and other diet-related illnesses are common among the homeless population and poor diet can worsen physical and mental health. The initiative understands that food is part of the care package. Currently, the Foxton breakfast programme serves dozens of people each week, with an average food cost of £300. But demand is growing and food supplies are stretched thin.
That’s why two modern apprentices working within the Primary Care Network have launched a fundraising campaign, encouraging local businesses to donate food, money, or services to help keep the food service running. Their efforts are helping to forge a stronger link between local organisations and community health and proving that small, local actions can have a big impact.
Whether it’s a financial donation, regular food supply, or helping to spread the word, your support to Preston’s rough sleepers is vital.
How you can help:
Donate: £300 would provide enough food for the rough sleeper project for one week or any offer of goods, services or financial support.
Raise Awareness: Share this initiative with friends, family and on social media. n

Kate Smith, senior associate, Contentious Trusts & Probate at Forbes
Solicitors, explains what beneficiaries deserve to know
Grief doesn’t come with a manual. But neither, it seems, does being a beneficiary of someone’s Will. You’ve been told you’re due to inherit. And then…nothing.
No updates. No timeline. Just radio silence or vague responses that leave you feeling more confused than reassured.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. As a Contentious Probate solicitor, I often speak to people who feel completely in the dark. Some are just looking for answers. Others are worried something more serious is going on. And sadly, sometimes they’re right.
Executors have a job to do and a duty to you
Being an executor isn’t easy. It’s an unpaid job with legal duties, paperwork and often
LEFT IN THE DARK
emotional baggage. But it’s also a position of trust. Executors are responsible for collecting in the estate, settling debts and ensuring that everything is distributed according to the Will.
That means beneficiaries are entitled to be kept informed not left wondering what’s happening for months (or years) on end.
Delays can happen. But so can mistakes, poor communication, or worse: misuse of funds, conflict of interest, or a breakdown between co-executors.
YOU’VE BEEN TOLD YOU’RE DUE TO INHERIT. AND THEN…NOTHING. NO UPDATES. NO TIMELINE
Warning signs something’s wrong
Not every delay is suspicious, but these red flags are worth noting:
• You haven’t received a copy of the Will (or even seen it).
• The executor won’t give you a timeline or avoids your questions.
• There are signs of assets being sold or money being spent, but no accounts.
• The process seems to be dragging with no explanation.
• You’re told you’ll ‘get something eventually’ but nothing materialises. Sometimes, it’s a case of poor administration. Other times, there are deeper problems at play and if concerns are ignored too long, it becomes harder to untangle.
What can you do?
If you’re worried as a beneficiary, don’t wait for the worst-case scenario.
You have the right to:
Request information and accounts from the executor.
• Seek legal advice if things don’t add up or progress stalls.
• Challenge actions that appear to go against the terms of the Will.
• Apply to remove an executor in serious cases of maladministration.
Not every concern leads to a courtroom. In many cases, a polite but firm letter or clear explanation from a legal professional is enough to bring the process back on track.
Final thought
When someone dies, it’s natural to feel powerless. But being a beneficiary doesn’t mean being a bystander. If you’ve been left in the dark, ask questions. Clarity isn’t just your right, it’s how we protect the legacy your loved one intended. n
For advice on executor disputes or support with probate problems, visit: www.forbessolicitors.co.uk or call 0800 689 3607 to speak with a member of our team.
For many people, the need for legal advice often comes at a time of significant change and upheaval. That’s why we go out of our way to help you feel at ease and make the legal process as simple as possible.
SAND, SIP AND PLAY
It all started with a dream and a vision shared by two best friends and now it’s coming to life, writes Ali Gudgeon
It began, as so many great ideas do, with two best friends chatting over coffee. From those conversations grew a vision unlike anything else in the UK – a place where children can play freely and parents can enjoy top-quality coffee in comfort.
Fast-forward to July and that vision has come to life on Lancaster Road in Preston city centre with the opening of Mini Dunes, the UK’s first coffee shop with an indoor sandpit.
The brainchild of former Preston North End goalkeeper Connor Ripley and his lifelong friend Sam Thompson, Mini Dunes is already creating a buzz in the city and beyond. “We spotted a gap in the market,” says Connor. “Soft plays rarely offer decent coffee and most cafés aren’t designed with children in mind. Mini Dunes brings the best of both together.”
Walking through the doors of Mini Dunes, it’s immediately clear that this is no ordinary café. At the heart of the light-filled, stylishly designed space is a giant indoor sandpit, complete with toys and plenty of space for children to let their imaginations run wild. Parents can settle into cosy
seating nearby, enjoying barista-quality coffee and pastries while still keeping a watchful eye on their little ones.
Connor and Sam’s aim was simple, create a welcoming, family-friendly space that treats parents as much as children. “We wanted to design somewhere kids could love but where adults wouldn’t feel like they were compromising,” says Connor. “That’s why we’ve gone high-end with the café side of things. Visitors can expect quality coffee, iced drinks, matcha, pastries, cakes, even vegan and gluten-free options.”
WE WANTED TO DESIGN SOMEWHERE KIDS COULD LOVE BUT WHERE ADULTS WOULDN’T FEEL LIKE THEY WERE COMPROMISING
For Connor, now playing for Swindon Town, the leap from football to hospitality might seem unusual but he insists it’s been a natural transition. “Football’s been my whole adult life and I’ll always be grateful
for that, but it doesn’t last forever,” he reflects. “I wanted something meaningful beyond football. I’ve brought qualities with me –leadership, teamwork, staying calm under pressure – and I’ve loved every second of building Mini Dunes with Sam.”
Though training and matches keep him busy, Connor is keen to stay hands-on at Mini Dunes. “I try to be there as much as possible. When I have a day off or can get back before five, you’ll find me helping out in the café.”
Choosing the city centre location was a deliberate decision. “We both know Preston well. Sam has lived here all his life and even runs a barber shop just 100 yards away,” says Connor. “We wanted to create something special that adds to the heart of the city.”
That sense of connection with the local community has been central to Mini Dunes’ early success. “The reaction has been incredible,” Connor smiles. “Everyone who visits seems to love it. We’ve even had food vloggers and influencers in and their videos have gone viral. It’s blown our minds.”
While walk-in visits are the heartbeat of Mini Dunes, Sundays are reserved for private hire – perfect for birthday parties, christenings or special celebrations. The team also hosts Bloom Baby sensory classes
and are planning more community-led events in the future.
Those booking a private hire enjoy exclusive use of the café and sandpit for two hours, with staff on hand and the full café menu available. Optional extras include themed party boxes, goodie bags and even a balloon
WHEN I HAVE A DAY OFF OR CAN GET BACK BEFORE FIVE, YOU’LL FIND ME HELPING OUT IN THE CAFÉ
arch to make the day truly memorable. “We want people to leave with special memories,” says Connor.
Mini Dunes may be the UK’s first café of its kind, but at its heart is a simple philosophy – quality coffee, family time and a space designed with both adults and children in mind. Connor and Sam have poured passion, energy and vision into their new venture – and in doing so, they’ve created something Preston can be proud of.
As word spreads, the pair remain committed to their original dream.
“Working with your best mate makes it all worthwhile,” Connor says. “We set out to make a place where families could relax and enjoy time together. Seeing that come to life and the smiles on people’s faces, makes it all worth it.”
So, whether you’re in need of a caffeine fix, a playdate destination, or somewhere to celebrate a special occasion, Mini Dunes offers something genuinely new – and right here in the heart of Preston. n

HERITAGE CHARM WITH A MODERN TOUCH
In the heart of the Ribble Valley, the family-run Greendale Teahouse & Rooms offers refined food, homely hospitality and countryside views that soothe the soul. Photography: Kirsten Platt
There are few places that manage to combine the technical cookery often found in fine dining with the embrace of genuine homeliness, but Greendale Teahouse & Rooms achieves just that. Tucked away between the Bowland villages of Chatburn and Downham, with Pendle Hill watching over from a distance, this family-run gem is the sort of place that makes you feel part of its story from the moment you step inside.
Greendale Teahouse & Rooms is run by Michael and Zoe, a couple whose pedigree includes experience in Michelin-starred kitchens. Their expertise is evident in every plate, yet it’s tempered by a warmth that only comes from running a business with family at its heart. Zoe’s parents, Caroline and Neil, play a vital role in the background, adding to that sense of home.
The setting is pure Ribble Valley charm. A grand bay window frames sweeping views across the valley towards the Yorkshire Dales, while a wood burner glows in the corner
during the chillier days of the year. Heritage colours and timeless décor give the dining room character without pretence. It is at once elegant and welcoming, the kind of place where walkers and cyclists happily swap stories over coffee while locals and visitors alike tuck into brunch or cake.
FOOD IS THE SOUL OF GREENDALE AND NOTHING HERE IS BOUGHT IN. BREAD, SAUCES, CAKES AND CHOCOLATES ARE ALL MADE BY HAND IN THEIR TINY KITCHEN
Food is the soul of Greendale, and nothing here is bought in. Bread, sauces, cake and chocolates, are all made by hand in their tiny kitchen. The menu flows easily from breakfast through to lunch, punctuated by exquisite baking. I tried one of Zoe’s delicate pastries alongside coffee from the Heavenly Coffee Company – and the pairing was faultless.
Michael’s cooking is rooted in simplicity and seasonality, with meats from Anne at Roy Porter Butchers and produce from the Downham Estate among the local treasures that appear on the plate.
Upstairs, four stylish bedrooms extend the Greendale welcome. Thoughtful touches, from Bath House toiletries to homemade chocolates and cafetière coffee, elevate the experience without ever straying from the homely ethos. The beds, complete with organic bamboo mattress toppers, promise a restful night after a day spent exploring.
And exploring is irresistible here. Clitheroe is only a short drive away, brimming with independent eateries, while La Locanda in Gisburn, a celebrated Italian restaurant, works in close partnership with Michael and Zoe. The Forest of Bowland lies ready to be discovered, making Greendale Teahouse & Rooms the ideal base for a short break.
Greendale is not about fuss or formality, but about sharing good food, warm hospitality and a sense of place. It is a reminder that simplicity, when executed with care, is often the most rewarding luxury of all. n

FAMILY TIME MEETS LAKESIDE LUXURY
Sometimes it’s not just about getting away. It’s about coming together. That was the thought in my mind as we packed up the car for a three-generational weekend at Ribby Hall Village, writes Tedd Walmsley
This wasn’t just a holiday. It was an opportunity to pause, reconnect and make memories. Joining me and my wife, now affectionately renamed Nonna and Poppi, were our son Robert, his wife Jenni and our lively grandson Charlie, aged 43 /4 . The promise of fresh air, family time and a little luxury had us buzzing before we’d even set off. The moment we arrived at the Lakeside View Apartments in the exclusive Reeds Bay complex, we knew we were in for something special. Driving into Reeds Bay feels like entering another world entirely. It’s peaceful and private, framed by water and wide skies and there’s an immediate sense of calm. Our apartment sat right on the lake, and as we stepped through the door, the stress of the week melted away.
Floor-to-ceiling windows flooded the space with light and offered uninterrupted views
over the still water, reeds swaying gently on the breeze. The apartment was beautifully designed and finished, with every detail carefully considered. Modern yet homely, understated yet undeniably luxurious. From the plush soft furnishings to the fully equipped kitchen, it felt effortless.
“You walk in and instantly relax,” Robert said, tossing the car keys onto the sideboard with a grin. And he was right.
Out on the deck, our very own private hot tub overlooked the lake, a quiet corner where mornings began with steaming coffee and evenings ended under a canopy of stars. Charlie, meanwhile, declared it “the biggest bath ever” and we didn’t have the heart to correct him.
The lake itself is the centrepiece of Reeds Bay and staying here comes with exclusive
access to a thoughtfully curated selection of watersports. There were rowing boats, kayaks and paddleboards to choose from, just enough to keep everyone entertained without ever feeling crowded. What impressed me most was the attention to safety. There was a full collection of lifejackets in every size, properly fitted for adults and children alike, giving us total confidence to relax and enjoy our time on the water.
Charlie was quick to claim a pedal spot on the rowboat, grinning from ear to ear.
“I’m driving, Nonna!” he shouted proudly. And at that moment, three generations were united by simple shared joy.
THREE GENERATIONS, ONE PLACE, NO RUSH. JUST TIME TO TALK, LAUGH AND BUILD MEMORIES
Of course, Ribby Hall offers far more than just water adventures. Charlie’s face lit up at every turn, from the soft play zones and adventure playgrounds to the brilliant swimming pools complete with twisting slides. Meanwhile, Jenni and Robert enjoyed a little luxury of their own.
This time, they treated themselves to dinner at The Orangery, a truly elegant grown-up dining experience with refined dishes and a calm kid-free atmosphere.
“It was such a treat,” Jenni told me later. “To have an evening just for us, knowing Charlie was happy and safe with you two, it made the weekend feel extra special.”
Meanwhile, we kept Charlie entertained back at the apartment. After an evening splash in the hot tub (which he insists is “better than any swimming pool”) and a Disney movie marathon, he was fast asleep. That left Nonna and I to enjoy a quiet glass of wine on the deck as the lake reflected the soft glow of the lights around us.
Dining at Ribby Hall is a joy with something for every mood and occasion. From indulgent afternoon teas to fresh hand-made pizzas, the options are plentiful. Nonna fell in love with the coffee shop while I quickly became partial to an evening cocktail watching the sunset.
And as beautiful as the apartment was, Ribby Hall’s greatest luxury is space. The freedom for everyone to find their own rhythm. For Charlie, it was endless play. For Robert and Jenni, a little grown-up time. And for us, the simple pleasure of being together, catching up over lazy breakfasts and lingering suppers.
We were also deeply impressed by the incredible staff throughout our stay. From the warm welcome at check-in to the friendly goodbyes at checkout, every team member went out of their way to make us feel at home. Whether it was sharing tips on local walks or delivering extra towels with a smile, their attentiveness made all the difference. It’s this kind of thoughtful hospitality that sets Ribby Hall apart.
As the weekend unfolded, I found myself reflecting on how rare these moments are. Three generations, one place, no rush. Just time to talk, laugh and build memories.
On our final morning, coffee in hand, I sat on the deck watching mist rise off the lake when Charlie appeared beside me, hair sticking up at improbable angles.
“I don’t want to go home,” he said softly. Truthfully, neither did I.
Before we packed up the car, we made one last stop by the water’s edge, promising each other we’d be back. Ribby Hall has always been a favourite of ours but the Lakeside

View Apartments elevate it to something extraordinary. It’s a chance to step into a world where luxury meets family, where
time slows down and where every detail, from the hot tub to the hidden play areas, is designed to bring people together.

RACE ACROSS LANCASHIRE
Armed with thirty quid, no mobiles and an alarming amount of optimism, Liz Walmsley signed up for Lancashire Women’s fundraiser based on the TV hit Race Across the World. What could possibly go wrong?
I’ve always loved a physical challenge and if it involves raising money for a good cause you can always count me in. When Lancashire Women announced their own version of Race Across the World I didn’t hesitate. Fifteen teams, two days, no personal phones, no credit cards and just £30 in cash. It was irresistible. Belinda, my long-suffering friend and now official wing woman, didn’t take much persuading either.
The first clue
At dawn, the Lancashire Women hub in
Accrington buzzed with nervous energy. Our first clue directed us to Silverdale, the northernmost point of the county, a cool 50 miles away.
Some teams nobly queued for train tickets to Preston. We, on the other hand, decided £14 was a luxury we couldn’t afford and boarded without. Fare-dodging might not have been in the spirit of the event but we told ourselves the £14 would stretch further on chips. In Preston, fortune favoured the shameless. Richard, Arthur and Joseph picked us up
after a pleading roadside performance and drove us to the A6. There we struck gold. One of our contacts immediately dropped his tools, grabbed his car keys and delivered us directly to Silverdale. Checkpoint one in the bag.
Morecambe or bust
The next clue was a sculpture we recognised in Morecambe. Local heroes Ash and Tracey shut the pharmacy, donated a tenner and drove us there themselves. We still hadn’t touched the budget.
Leaving Morecambe was trickier. Gizmo’s Pizza came to the rescue when Belinda remembered her old neighbour owned it. On the way we met Luke, polishing his car, who kindly detoured for us. Paulo from Gizmo’s then handed us over to Gary, who whisked us towards Blackpool, passing on invaluable tips about free bus rides along the way.
POOR PHIL IN HIS MINI BARELY HAD TIME TO REGISTER WHAT WAS HAPPENING BEFORE BELINDA WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT SHOWING HIM THE PHOTO
By now we were seasoned hitchhikers. Lee and Emma, who had set out for a quiet day at the garden centre, were next. We hijacked their plans and ended up with a lift straight to the Lancashire Women hub in Blackpool. Not only did they change their shopping trip but later tracked Belinda down on Facebook to donate. Incredible.
Checkpoint two came with a challenge: clean windows while drinking tea. Piece of
cake. Then we were handed a photo clue for our overnight stop. I thought I recognised the building, so we ran in that direction. Poor Phil in his MINI barely had time to register what was happening before Belinda was in the passenger seat showing him the photo. He delivered us straight to the door, making us the third team to check in. That night we celebrated with fish and chips and the best night’s sleep of the year.
Day Two: Pedal to the metal
Sunday morning, we set off in our arrival order. Our clue led to the Windmill at Lytham. Ian, who’d heard about the race on Radio Lancashire, drove us straight there. A bit of gardening at Hardwick and Thompson Opticians and we were off again. Destination: Clitheroe.
Trains from Lytham are unreliable at the best of times, let alone on a Sunday. Salvation came when I knocked up my neighbour, who didn’t hesitate to play chauffeur. Kindness seemed to be waiting around every corner.
In Clitheroe the real test arrived. We could
either visit both remaining checkpoints or tackle Pendle Hill instead. Naturally we chose the hill. George, who only meant to nip out for a tin of paint, ended up chauffeuring us to the Nick o’ Pendle. From there it was a slog to the summit, a windswept selfie and a slippery descent into Barley, just as the heavens opened.
GEORGE, WHO ONLY MEANT TO NIP OUT FOR A TIN OF PAINT, ENDED UP CHAUFFEURING US TO THE NICK O’ PENDLE
At the Pendle Witch pub, we scanned the room for potential chauffeurs. Most customers buried their heads in menus but Dave from Nelson stepped up. He polished off his Sunday lunch then drove us all the way to Blackburn Cathedral, our final checkpoint. From there it was a taxi share with another team back to Accrington and a glorious finish.
The kindness of strangers
Looking back, the race was one of the most
memorable and worthwhile experiences of my life. The sheer generosity we encountered was overwhelming. From people who drove us miles out of their way, to those who shut shops, made donations or simply cheered us on, it felt like the whole county wanted us to succeed.
So, to Richard, Arthur, Joseph, David, Tracey, Paulo and Mia, Gary the HGV man, Lee and Emma, Phil in the MINI, Ian, George and finally Dave – thank you. Whether you were being kind or simply too terrified to refuse us, you made the adventure unforgettable.
If this tale of lifts, luck and Lancashire spirit has inspired you, please consider donating. As the saying goes, every little helps. n
VISION TO REALITY
It’s an exciting time for Goosnargh Park Lodges where the community is growing and visitors are invited to view this unique lifestyle opportunity
Ihad the pleasure of sitting down recently with Stephen, the Sales Manager at Goosnargh Park Lodges and the excitement in his voice was unmistakable. As we talked, it quickly became clear that this is a moment of real significance for the park, not just for the team behind it, but for the growing community of new lodge owners who are now beginning to call it home.
“It’s been an incredible journey to get to this point,” Stephen told me. “To see the first of our lodge owners moving in and settling down here is something really special. The vision we had is now becoming a reality, and there’s a real sense of momentum about what’s happening.”
That momentum is evident in the latest additions to the site. With three brand-new show lodges now ready to view, Stephen was quick to highlight the unique opportunity they represent.
“These are show-stopping lodges in every sense,” he said enthusiastically. “Each one is designed to demonstrate not only the craftsmanship and quality that we insist upon, but also the different ways people can adapt a lodge to suit their lifestyle. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, a downsizing solution or even a base for exploring the stunning Ribble Valley, these lodges tick every box.”
COME AND SEE US. SPEND SOME TIME HERE, TAKE A WALK THROUGH THE SHOW LODGES AND CHAT WITH THE TEAM
Stephen was equally keen to underline the importance of flexibility for buyers. With a range of plots and layouts available, plus the option to purchase existing show lodges, the park offers a variety of choices to suit different needs and budgets.
“The great thing is that people can come and see for themselves,” he added. “We encourage visitors to walk through the lodges, picture themselves living here and get a real feel for what the Goosnargh lifestyle is all about. Once they do, they quickly see the value, it’s about quality of life, not just bricks and mortar.”
As he spoke, I could sense the pride that
Stephen and his team take in the park. The infrastructure has been carefully thought through, the location is second to none and every detail has been designed with owners in mind.
“We’re building more than lodges,” he said with conviction. “We’re building a community. Already, our first residents are forming those all-important neighbourly bonds and that’s something money can’t buy. It’s what turns a development into a home.”
Looking ahead, Stephen was keen to stress that now is the perfect time to get involved. With the first owners settling in, the buzz around the park is growing fast.
“There’s a real window of opportunity right now,” he said. “People who act quickly will not only get the best choice of lodges and plots, but they’ll also be part of shaping the early community here. That’s something very exciting to be part of.”
For anyone still considering a visit, Stephen left me with one final thought: “Come and see us. Spend some time here, take a walk through the show lodges and chat with the team. We’re confident that once you experience the park in person, you’ll see why Goosnargh Park Lodges is such a special place.” n

REDEFINING THE LIFE OF A LAWYER
In an industry often synonymous with long hours and relentless pressure, Farleys Solicitors is quietly rewriting the narrative
With offices rooted in communities across Lancashire and Greater Manchester, Farleys’ full-service law firm is proving that legal excellence and personal wellbeing can, and should, go hand in hand.
At Farleys, the ethos is refreshingly simple –legal expertise delivered with a down-toearth approach. But behind this simplicity lies a bold ambition, not just to grow, but to grow well.
Farleys has been established since 1958 and is a well-known name in the region. Back in 2022, the firm joined Lawfront, a private equity backed group of regional law firms. Despite becoming part of a wider group, Farleys has continued to embrace a model that prioritises people, culture and community. The firm’s recent acquisition of Wigan-based Alker Ball Healds Solicitors (ABH) is a testament to this vision. With all 32 ABH staff retained and the brand continuing under the Farleys name, the move expands Farleys’ reach while preserving the trusted relationships built over generations.
What sets Farleys apart is its commitment to creating a workplace where lawyers thrive not just professionally, but personally.
“It’s about building a professional family,” says Ian Liddle, Managing Partner. “We want our team to grow in a way that supports their lives, not just their careers.”
WE CARE ABOUT OUR CLIENTS AND GETTING THE BEST POSSIBLE OUTCOMES FOR THEM, BUT WE ALSO CARE ABOUT OUR COLLEAGUES
This philosophy is more than just words. Farleys has invested in their office space, including a brand new flagship office in Padiham, as well as a comprehensive benefits package for employees at all levels of the business and a culture that promotes the values of being bold, being authentic and to truly care.
“We’re proud of the reputation we’ve built as a law firm,” adds Managing Partner Daniel Draper. “But what’s at the heart of it is that
we care. We care about our clients and getting the best possible outcomes for them, but we also care about our colleagues and know that when they feel happy and supported at work, everyone benefits.”
The firm’s growth strategy is equally people centric. With Lawfront’s backing, Farleys is expanding through targeted acquisitions and local recruitment, ensuring that each new chapter strengthens its community roots.
“We’re keen to recruit the best legal talent the region has to offer,” says Ian. “In return, we’ll provide a working environment that supports career progression without compromising on a work/life balance.”
For aspiring lawyers and seasoned professionals alike, Farleys offers a compelling alternative to the traditional legal grind. It’s a place where ambition meets authenticity and where the life of a lawyer is no longer defined by sacrifice, but by balance, purpose and pride.
In a world that’s finally waking up to the importance of wellbeing, Farleys Solicitors is leading the way – one thoughtful acquisition, one happy lawyer and one satisfied client at a time. n

ULTIMATE WEDDING TIMELINE
From the moment you say yes to the blissful post-honeymoon glow, this guide walks you through the perfect UK wedding timeline without the stress
Getting engaged is one of those magical moments you’ll remember forever. But after the champagne glasses are washed, reality sets in. Planning a wedding can feel like juggling flaming torches while riding a unicycle. The trick to staying sane is to break it all down into a simple timeline so you know exactly what needs doing and when.
The journey starts as soon as you’ve shared the happy news. Celebrate with friends and family, then start thinking about the practical bits. Setting a budget early is vital. It will guide every decision you make, from the size of your guest list to the venue you choose. Top spots can book up well over a year in advance, so it’s wise to lock in your date as soon as you can. If the idea of managing every detail yourself feels daunting, you could bring a wedding planner on board to help steer the ship.
About nine to 12 months before the big day is the time to secure your key suppliers.
Photographers, caterers and entertainment providers can get snapped up quickly, so book them early. This is also when the fun of dress shopping begins. Make it an experience to share with close friends or family, and don’t forget to research the legal requirements for your ceremony, especially if it’s religious or abroad. Sending out save-the-dates now gives your guests the best chance of keeping the date free.
A GOOD WEDDING TIMELINE TURNS PLANNING FROM STRESSFUL CHAOS INTO A JOYFUL COUNTDOWN
As you move into the six-to-nine-month window, it’s time to finalise the rest of your suppliers, like florists, cake makers and stationers. Hair and makeup trials should be booked so you can see how you’ll look on the
day. Outfits for bridesmaids and groomsmen can be chosen now too. Invitations should be ordered so you’re ready for the next stage.
With three to six months to go, the legal side needs attention. In the UK you must give notice at your local registry office, please be mindful that there’s a set timeframe for doing this. Menu tastings can help you fine-tune your reception meal and it’s the perfect time to choose readings and music for your ceremony.
One to two months before, send out your invitations, schedule final fittings and put pen to paper on vows or speeches. A detailed timeline for the wedding day itself can help everyone know where they need to be. Organising a hen or stag do around this time keeps the celebrations rolling.
In the final fortnight, confirm guest numbers, break in your wedding shoes and pack for your honeymoon. A rehearsal, while not essential, can calm nerves.
Then the day arrives. The best advice? Breathe, be present and enjoy every moment. After all, you’ve earned it. Once the confetti has settled, send out thank-you cards, update your name if you’re changing it and leave reviews for your suppliers. n
UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE DAY
Like many excited couples before them, Sophie and Oli Whitehead were determined to find the perfect venue to say ‘I do’ – and Barton Manor Hotel & Spa provided the perfect backdrop for the wedding of their dreams
Originally built as a manor house in 1900 and now a renowned 4-star hotel and spa, it had the ultimate ‘wow’ factor for the couple, and as soon as they saw the blend of historic red-brick charm with contemporary touches, they knew they had found the exact feel they were looking for.
Sophie explains: “From the outset, we really wanted our wedding to feel cosy, intimate and informal. We had viewed a couple of beautiful venues, but the minute we arrived at Barton Manor, we knew we had found ‘the one’.
“As a couple, we’re not at all big on formalities and didn’t want to feel like we were in the spotlight. We just wanted our guests to feel completely comfortable and relaxed so that it would feel like a big celebration of our marriage, rather than it
just be about a more formal wedding day.”
Nestled in the heart of the Lancashire countryside, just outside Preston and minutes from the M6, Barton Manor offers exceptionally accessible yet picturesque countryside surroundings – ideal for guests convening from near and far.
FROM THE MINUTE WE CHOSE BARTON MANOR AND MET WITH THEIR AMAZING WEDDING PLANNERS, WE FELT LIKE THE WHOLE THING WAS IMMEDIATELY TAKEN CARE OF
Central to its appeal is the Barton Suite, a bright and airy space soaked with natural daylight, mood lighting and its own private
entrance and bar area – accommodating up to 150 guests for a wedding breakfast and up to 250 for the evening reception.
Sophie continues: “We had originally had our hearts set on getting married outside, but as the weather took a turn, we resigned ourselves to the fact that we would have to move the ceremony inside.
“We were a little deflated, but we accidentally came across the new setting in the Barton Suite the night before and we were completely blown away with how amazing the space looked. We instantly forgot our disappointment and knew this was almost better than the original outdoor plan. It was just perfect.”
Family-run and personally managed, Barton Manor takes pride in crafting bespoke wedding experiences, with the dedicated events team working closely with couples from the early planning stages through to the big day, to lovingly bring each vision to life.
The on- site spa and leisure facilities are home to a pool, sauna, steam room, gym and an array of treatments offering indulgent relaxation, both before and after the wedding.
The hotel’s grounds include a secret walled garden, trellis-covered walkway and flower-arched paths – perfect for romantic couple portraits or group shots, come rain or shine.
Sophie continues: “From the minute we chose Barton Manor and met with their amazing wedding planners, we felt like the whole thing was immediately taken care of. They were so lovely and down to earth and never made us feel like we were asking a silly question – they are so versatile and experienced in what they do.
EVERYTHING ABOUT BARTON MANOR, FROM THE DELICIOUS FOOD WE CHOSE FOR OUR GUESTS, TO THE ENTERTAINMENT, AMBIENCE AND INTIMATE FEEL, WAS EVERYTHING WE HAD HOPED FOR
“On our honeymoon, we had time to relax and reflect and we both agreed we couldn’t have wished for a more perfect day –everything about Barton Manor, from the delicious food we chose for our guests, to the entertainment, ambience and intimate feel, was everything we had hoped for. Our only thought is that we would love to do it all again and simply wouldn’t change a single second of it.” n

MINI MOON PERFECTION
Checking into Bailey Hut for our five-day Mini Moon, we discovered a handcrafted slice of luxury nestled in the Ribble Valley, offering cosy comfort, countryside charm and thoughtful touches galore, writes Kate Hughes
If you’re dreaming of romance, seclusion and a touch of magic, Bailey Hut is the perfect mini moon hideaway. Tucked into the lush folds of the Ribble Valley, this little gem is more than just a shepherd’s hut –it’s a retreat, a delight and quite possibly the most lovingly designed space I’ve ever stayed in.
After our wedding, my husband Thomas and I couldn’t have wished for a more enchanting escape. From the moment we stepped inside, it felt like the world slowed down. Think warm wood, twinkling lights and handcrafted details. Every element feels deeply personal, from the soft linen bedding to the hand-thrown pottery. Zoe, the owner, has poured love into every corner and it shows.
The bed? A dream. Deep mattress, heavenly pillows and underfloor heating that kept us cosy even when the valley mist rolled in. We’d spend lazy mornings with coffee and books from Zoe’s little library, music playing from the Roberts bluetooth speaker, feeling like the only two people in the world. The kitchen has everything needed for romantic meals in or a simple champagne breakfast, which Zoe organised so beautifully for us. Farm-fresh eggs, homemade jam and sourdough to die for. And the gin? Also homemade. Also fabulous!
The en-suite bathroom is unexpectedly spacious, with a walk-in shower, plush towels and robes and divine-smelling eco toiletries from Bright Earth. A daily ritual of hot showers, soft robes and coffee in the garden became our routine.
Outside, the private garden offers delightful views, we toasted marshmallows by the firepit, sipped wine under the stars and wandered across fields to the pub. Every evening felt like a scene from a love story.
Zoe’s honesty shop deserves its own mention, part rustic pantry, part boutique. Stocked with local goodies, wine, chutney and handmade treats – it’s also a drying room for wet boots after long country strolls.
One of our wedding guests had arranged a surprise wedding gift with Zoe. Two handthrown mugs, just like the ones in the hut, wrapped to perfection and waiting for us with a note. It was an unforgettable touch. If there’s anything you’d like to arrange, gifts, romantic extras, or a surprise for your partner, Zoe will go above and beyond to make it happen.
IT’S
A RETREAT, A DELIGHT AND QUITE POSSIBLY THE MOST LOVINGLY DESIGNED SPACE I’VE EVER STAYED IN
Perfectly located to enjoy all the Ribble Valley has to offer, Bailey Hut is built for lovers, walkers and anyone in search of stillness. For us, it was a romantic, luxurious retreat with thoughtful touches at every turn. Five nights flew by in a haze of peace, laughter and countryside magic.
For newlyweds, it’s a dream mini moon. For anyone else, it’s still a slice of heaven you won’t want to leave.
Thank you, Zoe and Bailey Hut, for the perfect start to our married life! n

‘I do’ abroad can be the ultimate way to combine a dream wedding with a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon
I’m back after a couple of months off, and as this issue has a feature on weddings, I thought it would be a great opportunity to tell you about destination weddings and honeymoons.
Getting married abroad is becoming increasingly popular and it’s easy to see why. One of the biggest benefits is the chance to combine your wedding with a once-ina-lifetime travel experience. Exchanging vows in a breathtaking location whether it’s a sun-soaked beach, a charming European village, or a dramatic mountain landscape, creates unforgettable memories and stunning backdrops for your special day.
A destination wedding can also be more intimate. Many couples find that inviting a smaller group of close family and friends allows for a more meaningful celebration. It’s a chance to spend quality time together,
rather than being overwhelmed by a large guest list and tight schedules.
Financially, marrying abroad can sometimes be more affordable than a traditional wedding at home. Resorts and venues often offer packages that include accommodation, catering and even coordination services, making planning simpler and often more cost-effective.
MARRYING ABROAD
BLENDS SEAMLESSLY INTO YOUR HONEYMOON, ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR ADDITIONAL TRAVEL
There’s also the added cultural experience –incorporating local traditions, cuisine and customs can make your ceremony unique and memorable. You must, however, be mindful of legalities in the country you would like to marry in and make sure you consult a professional before investing in time and money on a venue.
Finally, marrying abroad blends seamlessly into your honeymoon, eliminating the need for additional travel. Which leads me perfectly to your honeymoon.
Often overlooked, your honeymoon (for a lot of couples), is one of the most expensive
holidays you will take. This could be because of the location, experiences you might want to have while you’re away, maybe you want to upgrade your flights, or simply because you’re ‘pushing the boat out’. A lot of couples will consider their honeymoon after a lot of the other wedding related items, but that can often leave you with a smaller budget and therefore having to compromise on what you originally wanted to do. I always advise couples to start thinking early and get something booked in before favours and ‘other’ things eat up the budget.
Looking forward into 2026/27, the most popular destinations are tropical paradises like the Maldives and Thailand, European classics such as Italy and Greece, adventurous locations like Iceland and South Africa and luxury destinations like Dubai. I have recently organised an American road trip, taking in a stay on a ranch for two nights as a honeymoon. It’s a bucket-list holiday and the bride and groom couldn’t be more excited. If you’d like any advice on getting married abroad or help with creating your dream honeymoon, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch. n

EDUCATION NEWS
CELEBRATIONS ON RESULTS DAY
There was a buzz at Bolton School as Year 13 students collected their A Level Results this summer. This year’s results are even better than the last: more than two thirds of the cohort have achieved A*-B grades, which are the entryway to the very best universities. More than 40 per cent of grades awarded were A*-As and 12.6 per cent of grades awarded were A*s. Philip Britton, Bolton School’s Head of Foundation, said: “It is about reflecting on years of hard work that pupils have committed to and the work of my teaching colleagues in nurturing them to get the very best results they are capable of.”
EXCEPTIONAL RESULTS
Westholme is thrilled to report that a third of all entries were awarded the top A* and A grades. Particularly impressive results were seen in Further Maths, Computer Science, Criminology, Latin, Fine Art, Music and Photography. Drama results were outstanding this year, no surprise given Westholme recently being nominated for an Independent Schools of the Year Award in Performing Arts. Principal, Paul Taylor, commented on the results: “The pursuit of academic excellence is at the core of our existence and this group of students certainly rose to that challenge. It is a testament to their hard work in the classroom that we are seeing the best set of A Level results for many years.”
VET SUMMER SCHOOL
A group of wannabe vets were the first youngsters to take part in a Vet Summer School at the University of Lancashire. The residential programme, funded by Medivet, was aimed at strengthening the aspirations of young people from underrepresented backgrounds who want to study veterinary medicine and progress into a veterinary career. Practical activities, clinical skills and animal handling was provided from experienced academics and industry leaders including interview support. Team sessions deepened the students’ understanding of the veterinary industry and the opportunities available.
A LEVEL SUCCESS
Stonyhurst’s Sixth Form is celebrating another year of exceptional A Level results, with 19 per cent of pupils achieving A*, 81 per cent achieving grades A* - B, including 54 per cent at A* - A. These outstanding results have secured places at leading UK and international universities, including Oxford (with an Organ Scholarship), Durham, York, CUNEF and the University of St Gallen in Switzerland, to name just a few. Pupils are going on to study diverse courses such as Medicine, Law, Economics, Music, Architecture and Computer Science. We are hugely proud of our young people, who leave ready to embrace the world beyond school as ‘men and women for others’.
T LEVEL SUCCESS
While A Levels remain the traditional route to university or high-paying careers, students at Blackpool and The Fylde College are showing that alternative qualifications can be just as – if not more – effective. T Levels at B&FC have seen a 66 per cent increase in uptake this year, alongside a higher pass rate and more students achieving top grades, rising from 59 per cent to 63 per cent. Graduates from both T Levels and BTEC Level 3 extended diplomas – which carry the same UCAS points as A Levels – are moving on to degrees, apprenticeships and full-time jobs, underlining the strength of these career-focused pathways.
NEW CURRICULUM
From September 2025, pupils in Figures, Rudiments and Lower Grammar (Years 7–9) will embark on Stonyhurst’s new STEAM curriculum. Combining science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, this exciting interdisciplinary programme encourages creativity, curiosity and collaboration. Pupils will explore real-world challenges through hands-on projects such as raft building, rocket crafting and greenhouse design, while also engaging in competitions, enrichment activities and careers exploration. Rooted in our Jesuit values of Quant Je Puis, Men and Women for Others and Academic Excellence, the curriculum aims to inspire the next generation of innovators.
HISTORY IN THEIR HANDS
At Stonyhurst, the rare, historic collections can be touched, examined and brought vividly to life during lessons, giving even the youngest pupils the opportunity to learn from the past
Nestled impressively within the historic halls of Stonyhurst College, lies a museum and archive like no other. It spans centuries, crosses continents and holds within it not just rare and priceless objects, but the power to educate and inspire. The Stonyhurst Collections, now one of the most significant educational collections in the UK, began humbly in 1609 with a single golden cope.
That first object marked the beginning of a story shaped by upheaval, devotion and resilience.
“During the Reformation, the school, which was then in the Spanish Netherlands, received precious objects through the parents of English boys who were sent there,” explains Dr. Jan Graffius, the curator of the Stonyhurst Collections. “These objects were connected to the Catholic faith and were being destroyed in England along with the abbeys and monasteries.”
Now, more than 400 years later, the collection has grown into an extraordinary archive of around 100,000 books, 40,000
manuscripts and 70,000 artefacts. Each piece tells a story, whether it’s a 4,000-yearold flint spearhead or a fossilised tooth of a woolly mammoth.
“The Jesuits have always recognised that objects have the power to illuminate and inspire. Many objects are of symbolic value,” explains Jan who firmly believes in making history come alive for pupils – not as untouchable artefacts behind glass, but as part of their daily learning.
PUPILS LOOK AT AND HANDLE THESE OBJECTS AND SEE THERE IS REASON FOR EVERYTHING – THEY ARE CAREFULLY DESIGNED AND ENGINEERED
To that end, Jan created the Junior Curators Scheme. Aimed at pupils aged nine and 10, it introduces them to the fundamentals of curating – from object handling to interpretation.
“These are all transferable skills that encourage communication,” she says.
Children may find themselves holding a Greek drinking cup from the first century AD, discovered in the ashes of Pompeii.
“The whole point of a Jesuit education is to observe, absorb and learn.”
And learn they do – be it through books, ancient manuscripts, fossils, flint and even taxidermy. Stonyhurst houses part of the Waterton Collection, a notable array of preserved animals collected by Victorian explorer Charles Waterton.
“Pupils get a bit freaked out by them sometimes!” Jan laughs. “But they learn about methods of preservation, how they come to be in the collection and how explorers back then travelled the world to learn about them. They went to the jungles of India and the forests of the Amazon – so this teaches pupils about the natural world.”
In a typical lesson, Jan may present a 50-million-year-old fossilised tooth from a megalodon shark: “What do you think that is?” she asks pupils. The answer is rarely guessed but always sparks curiosity. “The tooth opens a door to palaeontology – just one of many subjects woven into the lessons.”
She also shows them a Neolithic flint spearhead, pointing out the slightly curved shape. “Cavemen were far from stupid,” she says. “The curve makes the spearhead spin, giving it torque – so it does more damage when hunting.
“Pupils look at and handle these objects and see there is reason for everything – they are carefully designed and engineered.”
Stonyhurst’s Shakespeare First Folio sits proudly in a sturdy glass cabinet along a busy thoroughfare within the College, allowing
daily viewing of this rare treasure. Housed in the Do Room’s permanent exhibition, it’s joined by rotating displays curated by pupils -like Womanuscripts, showcasing women’s roles in history, through letters, recipes and theological manuscripts.
The display has been put together by 17-year-old girls in Poetry (Year 12): “I think they have found it quite liberating,” says Jan. “I am so proud of them!”
As pupils grow older, the scope of learning widens. Sixth Form pupils use the collections to explore historical and societal changes. International Baccalaureate (IB) pupils are required to present displays using museum artefacts, while A level biology and art pupils also draw inspiration from the collection, particularly the natural specimens of the Waterton Collection.
STONYHURST’S SHAKESPEARE FIRST FOLIO SITS PROUDLY IN A STURDY GLASS CABINET ALONG A BUSY THOROUGHFARE WITHIN THE COLLEGE, ALLOWING DAILY VIEWING OF THIS RARE TREASURE
Supporting Jan in this vital work is Esther Rollinson, the Museum Education Officer. Together, they have developed hundreds of ‘banked’ lessons based on the museum’s contents for Stonyhurst pupils, as young as three years old – their efforts also extend beyond Stonyhurst, with local schools encouraged to visit and engage with the collection.
Stonyhurst’s educational mission is grounded not just in preserving the past, but in helping pupils understand it – and their place within it. The legacy is reflected not only in objects but also in the names etched into the very furniture of the school. One such name is Arthur Conan Doyle,
the creator of Sherlock Holmes. His name is carved into a heavy oak desk, a tangible link to the school’s illustrious past. Inside a museum glass case sits one of his school reports, describing him rather unflatteringly, as a ‘quarrelsome buffoon with dirty habits’.
But behind the quirks and curiosities lies a deeper purpose. “It’s about understanding the world through the things left behind,” says Jan who adds that many of the objects give pupils access to people’s thoughts, values and experiences – allowing them to walk in someone else’s shoes – whether that’s a Roman soldier, a Victorian explorer or a Neolithic hunter.
At Stonyhurst, young minds are given the rare and unique opportunity to hold the past in their hands and carry its lessons into the future. n

NEW PRESTON THEATRE SCHOOL
A new part-time theatre school has opened in Preston, following an appearance on TV’s Dragon’s Den. When founder and director of Razzamataz Denise Hutton-Gosney appeared on the show, Duncan Bannatyne was quick to spot the potential of the business and offered the full investment. This has helped rapidly grow the company and turn Razzamataz into one of the top five part-time theatre schools in the UK, according to The Stage newspaper. Opening at Ashton Community Science College, classes are three hours of dance, drama and singing and the curriculum covers everything, from classic West End musical theatre to commercial street dance and hip hop.

Due to open in late 2025, the facility will provide a dedicated space for young people aged eight to 19 with access to sports, arts, skills, mentoring, community and much more. Councillor Valerie Wise, Preston City Council, explained: “Vault Youth Zone is being delivered by our talents of today for our talents of tomorrow to use, enjoy and prosper through countless opportunities.”
TRANSFORMING TRAVEL IN BLACKPOOL
A new team of customer assistants has transformed tram and bus trips in Blackpool, offering quicker boarding and face-to-face travel advice. A fresh focus on customer service has seen them posted at key locations on the tram and bus network. The 16-strong team are also on hand to help manage crowds and queues when necessary, which is helpful during special events and busy periods.
£30K DONATED TO LANCASHIRE PROJECTS
Eleven Lancashire causes have been awarded over £30,000 in grants from the Marsden Building Society Charitable Foundation. The Foundation was set up to provide financial support to community groups or projects supporting one of the Marsden’s three key themes – financial wellbeing and education, social inclusion and the environment. Kelly Court, Programmes Manager at the Community Foundation for Lancashire, said: “We’re delighted that our relationship with the Marsden Building Society Charitable Foundation continues to grow and strengthen, to reach a wide range of organisations across Lancashire that are delivering vital work to improve our communities and the lives of local people.”
Giving back has always been second nature to Amy: “It’s never about titles, it’s about showing up, doing your bit and helping the community thrive. That mindset runs through everything I do at Bowker too, from creating partnerships that support the arts and local charities to championing causes that bring people together.”
One project especially close to Amy’s heart was helping reintroduce a symphony orchestra to Preston, the first in over 50 years. She spotted the opportunity, brought Porsche Centre Preston on board as a founding partner and helped get the word out through their marketing channels.
Amy Lancaster-Hall is an award-winning Chartered Marketer celebrating 20 years of experience in the automotive industry this year. After starting her career at Liquid Plastics Limited post-A Levels in 1997, Amy quickly progressed from Export Administration Assistant to PA to the Managing Director, who mentored her to become the marketing professional she is today. She gained her CIM qualifications while working full-time and, in 2005, joined Bowker Motor Group as their first Marketing Executive.
Now Group Marketing Manager, Amy leads strategy across premium franchises including BMW, MINI, Porsche and BMW Motorrad. Under her leadership, Bowker has delivered standout campaigns that have earned national and international recognition.
She also became the first marketing professional to be invited join the MINI UK Sales Forum in 2024, a role traditionally held by senior sales leaders, offering a fresh, creative voice on national retail strategy.
HER CAREER HAS INCLUDED EVERYTHING FROM LAUNCHING A PORSCHE CENTRE FROM THE GROUND UP, TO LEADING GLOBAL AWARD-WINNING CAMPAIGNS WITH A TEAM OF JUST A FEW
Although she didn’t take the traditional university route, Amy worked hard, learned on the job and earned her qualifications while navigating the real world. Her career has included everything from launching a Porsche Centre from the ground up, to leading global award-winning campaigns with a team of just a few.
Amy adds: “This has taught me that you don’t need to tick every box to make a difference. Trust your instincts. Be good. Be kind. Work hard and be curious. And don’t be afraid to lead in your own way, especially if that looks different to what’s gone before.
“And if you’re in a position to lift someone else, do it. Mentoring and empowering others is one of the best things you can do, for them and for the industry.”
As a member of the MINI UK Sales & Marketing Forum, Amy has had a front-row seat and an active voice in one of the most significant changes to hit automotive retail in years: the shift to the Agency model and the rollout of the TNR platform.
Amy explains: “This wasn’t just a new system, it was a total transformation in how we price, market and sell vehicles. It’s changed the customer journey, redefined the role of the retailer and brought new digital tools and ways of working into play. My role has been to help guide that transition, both within Bowker and at the national level – shaping comms strategies, raising retailer concerns and supporting our internal team through what has been a huge cultural shift.
Celebrating two decades of experience in the automotive industry, Amy Lancaster-Hall is living proof that there is a place for women in a male-dominated trade, writes Ali Gudgeon BowkerMotorGroup.co.uk
“I also make a point of building local pride into our everyday campaigns, from featuring Lancashire businesses to supporting grassroots sports clubs and charities,” she adds. “It’s important to me to use whatever platform I have to support others, especially women making their mark in industries like automotive where they’re still underrepresented.”
IT’S IMPORTANT TO ME TO USE WHATEVER PLATFORM I HAVE TO SUPPORT OTHERS, ESPECIALLY WOMEN MAKING THEIR MARK IN INDUSTRIES LIKE AUTOMOTIVE WHERE THEY’RE STILL UNDERREPRESENTED
After 20 years in the business, what is Amy’s advice on having a successful career?
“Looking back, I’d tell myself not to try so hard to fit in,” says Amy. “You do your best work when you bring your full self to the table. I’d also remind myself that success isn’t measured in job titles or trophies (although I’m proud of those too), it’s in the team you build, the culture you create and the people who grow because you back them.
In an industry which has long been male-dominated, Amy explains: “Don’t underestimate the value of your voice in this industry. Change is happening and there’s a real need for more women to be part of that shift. Whether you’re analytical, creative, technical, or people-focused, there’s a space for you here and it’s growing.”
“At Bowker, we rethought how we promote MINI under this new model, retrained the team and built customer confidence during a period of big change. It’s been a challenge, no doubt, but one that’s helped future-proof the business and reshape how customers engage with the brand. Being part of that has been a real privilege.”
“The traditional values I was raised with: hard work, kindness, resilience, still guide me now. Treat everyone you meet with respect, whatever their job title. Surround yourself with people who make you better. And never stop learning, especially from the younger generation. The marketing industry is moving fast and staying humble enough to keep learning has been one of the best decisions of my career.” n
FAMILY INVESTMENT COMPANIES
In previous articles of Live Preston & Fylde, the team at Raymond James, Ribble Valley has described the challenges and opportunities arising from succession planning
Passing on generational wealth is the subject that has most aroused interest from readers, so we caught up with Connor Almond, Chartered Financial Planner at Raymond James to explore one method of achieving this. There are many ways to pass on your wealth to the next generation. Is there one particular method you think worth pursuing?
CA: It is important to set financial goals and discuss those with your family members. Succession and financial planning are essentially personal and different methods have relative advantages and disadvantages. One of the tools proving popular is Family Investment Companies, which can be used as a method to manage family wealth, tax efficiently, whilst keeping control of assets.
What is a Family Investment Company?
CA: A privately owned company which holds investments rather than doing any
kind of trading business. It is called a Family Investment Company (FIC), as usually all the shares are owned by members of a family, allowing profits to be distributed across the family.
Who should own shares in the FIC?
CA: Where set up with multiple share classes, often individual family members will own a different class of share. One advantage of using multiple classes of shares is that the directors may pay different amounts of dividends to the various family members to suit their individual requirements and needs.
The people setting up the FIC will usually hold the voting shares so that they retain control over what is invested in and when the other ‘family’ shareholders can benefit via dividends, with the other family members (such as children) holding the shares with economic (income and capital) rights.
How do you fund the FIC initially and what does it invest in?
CA: Funding the FIC by way of cash (either by way of a share subscription or a loan) is the most straightforward. Properties or investments can be transferred to the FIC, though this will usually give rise to capital gains tax implications and stamp duty land tax in the case of properties. There is no restriction on what FICs can invest in, but they most commonly invest in stocks and shares. This is because dividend income from stocks and shares will not generally be subject to corporation tax within the FIC itself. This means if such dividends are paid out to nontax-paying family members, wealth from the FIC can be distributed tax efficiently.
At Raymond James, Ribble Valley we work with our clients’ lawyers and accountants to establish the FIC and manage the investments thereafter.
Who is an FIC most appropriate for?
CA: There is no minimum value for setting up a FIC, though consideration should be given to the cost of setting it up as well as the annual administration costs involved in company compliance and reporting. Given the scope for a couple to put up to £650,000 into a discretionary trust or trusts, FICs do not generally tend to be used if the value is below £1 million. We find that business owners either contemplating or just completing an exit are particularly appropriate for the establishment of an FIC.
Can an FIC shield you from Inheritance Tax?
CA: Shares in FICs can be gifted to family members so that should the donor survive seven years after the gift, the value of their estate would be reduced for IHT purposes.
If you think a Family Investment Company may be appropriate for your circumstances, please do not hesitate to book an initial consultation with our team. n

Paul Agnew takes the iconic MINI Cooper Convertible S Exclusive on a fun-filled test drive to re-discover the car’s global appeal.
Photography: Peter Austin
Before pushing the start button on this review of possibly the most famous car on the planet, I’ve got a confession to make. For, let it be known, loud and clear, that I am a staunch fan of the subject matter.
The reason? A personal association going back through the driving decades – my very first car was a member of this iconic motoring brand.
Of course much has changed since the late-1970s (ouch, is it really so long ago!) not least in size and stature.
I can actually remember the MINI before it grew so big they had to spell it in capital letters!
But fear not, the change is all good –very, very good indeed. Easy to see why the mighty MINI retains global appeal across all age groups.
This is a car that exudes style and practicality with a fair dollop of fun thrown into the mix.
And, as if that isn’t exciting enough, I was invited to try out the convertible member of the range. Or, to give it its full name – the MINI Cooper Convertible S Exclusive.
EACH OF THE MINI ‘EXPERIENCE MODES’, TRANSFORMS THE CABIN’S COLOUR SCHEME, LIGHTING, STYLE AND SOUNDSCAPE
It sits at the higher end of the MINI Convertible range from which there are seven to choose, ranging from the MINI Cooper Convertible C Classic right up to the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible Sport.
In distinctive Ocean Wave Green, it
certainly looked the business. A real headturner in every sense.
You immediately know you’ll like everything about it and, after an hour or so getting fully acquainted, you find that you liked it even more than your thought you would.
Great looks on the outside are matched by a super internal layout and a truly wonderful drive.
The lively 2-litre petrol engine provides 204 bhp, making it possible to go from 0-62 mph in 6.9 seconds while offering excellent economy at 43.5 mpg.
It’s responsive, light on steering, holds the road beautifully and feels super sporty but perfectly safe.
Despite a few drizzle showers I managed to enjoy the bulk of the test with the top down. What a treat!
The electrically powered, 3-in-1 roof is so smooth and quiet with an intelligent Z-folding mechanism, which fully opens in under 20 seconds, even when driving at speeds of up to 18mph. It also comes with sunroof mode, which can open up to 40cm to let the sun shine in.
A wonderful experience that can be shared quite comfortably by four people as the back-seat passengers have plenty of legroom to enjoy, while experiencing the rush of open-air motoring.
The first most striking feature as you nestle into the driver’s seat is, of course, the ground-breaking circular display –so associated with MINI and these days the size of a pizza dish. All touchy and feely and clever – and yet another nod to fun.
Talking of clever, you’ll also find the first-ever Intelligent Personal Assistant in the MINI Cooper Convertible and progressive in-car technology that makes every journey more convenient and connected than ever before.
You can turn every drive into an unforgettable digital experience. Choose from up to seven different MINI ‘Experience Modes’, each one transforming the cabin’s colour scheme, lighting, style and soundscape.
My test model fell into Level 2 in terms of the specification and features, with a comprehensive range including adaptive LED headlights, comfort access, folding wing mirrors with auto-dimming, front heated seats, Harman/Kardon surround sound audio system, high-beam assistant, MINI head-up display, rear-view mirror with auto dimming and storage for wireless charging. Not to mention front and rear sensors,
reversing camera, heated steering wheel, Apple carplay and Android Auto.
I touched earlier on safety and amid all the thrills and spills of this fun motor, rest assured that nothing is left to chance.
THE ELECTRICALLY POWERED, 3-IN-1 ROOF IS SO SMOOTH AND QUIET WITH AN INTELLIGENT Z-FOLDING MECHANISM, WHICH FULLY OPENS IN UNDER 20 SECONDS
The MINI Cooper Convertible is designed to keep you as safe as possible, allowing you to enjoy the thrill of the road with total peace of mind.
Advanced safety features means that it is always looking out for potential hazards, whether you’re changing lanes, reversing or
simply opening a door, visual and audible alerts are there to help.
If like me you are familiar with MINI over the years, none of the above will come as a surprise. If you’re not, then please go and try it out. Within minutes you’ll be a convert! n

FIELD OF DREAMS
Freddie’s supersizing his cricket project across the North West of England and welcomes Kate Cross, current England Women’s international player to help coach his first ever girls’ team
The critically acclaimed, Bafta nominated and RTS award-winning Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams is back for a third series with sporting legend Freddie Flintoff taking on an even tougher challenge.
Determined to prove that his previous success wasn’t a one off, having created a cricket team like no other in his hometown of Preston and taken them on a life changing tour to India, he’s now set his sights on a much more ambitious plan.
Freddie wants to supersize the project right across the North West of England. He’ll attempt to form boys’ teams in Manchester and Liverpool while also attempting to create his first ever girls’ team in Blackpool at a club without any youth teams. Can he prove his blueprint for a league of dreams can work against a backdrop of a lack of funding, uninspired teens and derelict cricket clubs?
Joining Freddie in an extended coaching team is former Lancashire fast bowler Kyle Hogg and new recruit, current England Women’s international player Kate Cross. We caught up with Kate ahead of the new series.
How did you feel about joining the coaching team this series?
“I was really excited when Fred called me to ask if I’d be willing to help. I had seen the first series and loved how much attention the series had gathered. Growing up playing
cricket I know how vital the sport was in changing my life so to see the Preston lads getting that chance was great to watch. Initially I wasn’t too sure what to expect with the Southshore girls but I was excited to try and encourage some young girls to give cricket a go.”
ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES WE FACED WAS GETTING THE GIRLS TO UNDERSTAND THAT IT WAS OKAY TO FAIL AT SOMETHING THAT THEY WERE NEW TO
Why is it important for Freddie to form a girls’ cricket team?
“I think because it shows that the sport is for any gender. As professional cricketers we know how important visibility is and you can’t be what you can’t see. So for Fred to put women’s cricket on our televisions is so important for the next generation to see that it’s something they could look to go into, if they wanted to.”
What was your first impression of the girls’ team?
“My first thought was that Fred had bitten off more than he could chew! When we first arrived it was raining and a bit miserable and I couldn’t work out if we’d be able to make the session fun enough to get the girls to come back the following week. The girls were so reserved at first and it was quite
difficult to get their attention focused on what we wanted them to do. But what stood out so quickly for me was how much they became a group of friends. They were making videos for social media and having fun straight away which was a good sign!”
I ALWAYS CONSIDERED CRICKET WAS A SPORT FOR OLDER AND WEALTHIER PEOPLE
What was the most rewarding aspect of being involved in the programme and what where some of the challenges you faced?
“One of the biggest challenges we faced was getting the girls to understand that it was okay to fail at something that they were new to. It felt like they put so much pressure and expectation on themselves. Our job as coaches was to try and alleviate that pressure and make sure the girls had some fun. But when you broke through those moments and started to see the improvements it was amazing to see their faces when they did achieve something. From the first session we did to the last game we played, the difference in their confidence was unrecognisable. And you could tell they all wanted to help each other get better which was great to see.”
One of the girls who make up the Blackpool team, Madison, shared her thoughts too:
What did you think about cricket before joining the team? Had you ever played before?
“Before joining the Blackpool Team, I had never played cricket before and wouldn’t have thought of it either! I always considered cricket was a sport for older and wealthier people. But I really enjoyed being part of the girls’ team.”
What did you enjoy most about joining the team? Was there anything that surprised you?
“What I enjoyed most was the opportunity to meet new people and form new friendships. I have struggled with female friendships for many years and I was surprised at how welcoming each girl was to me and they never judged me.”
What was the biggest challenge you faced?
“The biggest challenge I faced when playing cricket was learning to believe in myself and understand that not everybody is perfect at everything!” n

STARS TAKE A SLICE
From Saturday night stars to pizza night partners – Ant and Dec have teamed up with Preston’s Northern Dough Co. to cook up something special
The UK’s biggest presenting duo, Ant and Dec, have become shareholders in The Northern Dough Co. As huge fans of their products, this deal will see them create and develop new products, work on marketing campaigns and produce innovative content for social media through their creative company, Mitre Studios.
The duo wanted to partner with a Northern family business for some time and when they heard about Northern Dough Co. they approached the Preston-based business to suggest a partnership.
To launch the partnership, Ant and Dec have filmed a tongue-in-cheek video in their boxer shorts, to show how The Northern Dough Co. offers restaurant quality food at affordable prices, all in the comfort of your own home with no need to get dressed up!
ANT AND DEC APPROACHED THE NORTHERN DOUGH CO. BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO SUPPORT A SMALL BUSINESS FROM THE NORTH THAT WAS AT AN EARLY STAGE IN ITS JOURNEY
Ant and Dec approached The Northern Dough Co. because they wanted to support a small business from the North that was at an early stage in its journey. The deal will see the duo and the brand join forces as the business continues to grow and reach a
wider consumer base. The partnership also has great synergy with their brilliant social series ‘Taste Mates’, where Ant and Dec cook a wide variety of dishes whilst having lots of fun in the process.
The Northern Dough Co. also shares many of Ant and Dec’s own values of bringing people together and sharing special moments with friends and family. Founded by married couple Amy and Chris Cheadle, The Northern Dough Co. offers a range of high quality, innovative, frozen bakery products that promote the idea of restaurant quality food that’s easy to cook and share together, making eating at home more than just a meal.
The Northern Dough Co. is already in the freezer sections of major supermarket retailers across the UK, sells direct from its website and continues to go from strength to strength. Their products include pizza dough that makes creating pizzeria standard food simple and easy at home. Now, with Ant
and Dec on board, they can realise their even bigger ambitions and even more exciting plans for the company.
Speaking about the unique collaboration, Ant says: “I love making pizzas at home with my family and was already using Northern Dough Co. when we started conversations with Amy and Chris about working with them. FROM THE VERY FIRST MEETING IT WAS CLEAR JUST HOW WELL THEIR PERSONAL VALUES ALIGNED WITH OURS AND HOW EASY IT WOULD BE TO PARTNER AND GROW OUR BUSINESS TOGETHER
Northern Dough Co. founders, Amy and Chris Cheadle said: “It’s not every day Ant and Dec’s team drop you a line to ask if you’d be interested in exploring working together, but from the very first meeting it was clear just how well their personal values aligned with ours and how easy it would be to partner and grow our business together.”
Adding: “As viewers, we’ve been entertained by Ant and Dec’s TV shows from Byker Grove as teens, to watching Takeaway and I’m a Celeb with our own children and it’s that ethos of getting everyone together to enjoy a relaxing, feel-good experience that’s at the heart of The Northern Dough Co.

PLATES WITH PURPOSE
The Rum Fox in Grindleton continues to blend comfort and creativity under chef patron Bob Geldeard and partner Kiaja Monk, with new menus, collaborations and celebrations ahead
Spend any time at The Rum Fox in Grindleton and you’ll quickly understand why it has become one of Lancashire’s most talked about dining spots. It isn’t just about what comes to the table but about the consistency and care behind every plate. Chef patron Bob Geldeard is a permanent fixture in the kitchen, working alongside his partner Kiaja
Monk to make sure that the experience remains as fresh as it is familiar. For them the restaurant is more than a business. It’s a living project that changes with the seasons while holding tight to a philosophy of quality and hospitality.
IT’S A LIVING PROJECT THAT CHANGES WITH THE SEASONS WHILE HOLDING TIGHT TO A PHILOSOPHY OF QUALITY AND HOSPITALITY
The kitchen is currently on the cusp of change as the new autumn menus prepare to make their debut. Right now diners can still enjoy dishes from the summer season. Lobster katsu curry, featuring lobster tail, lobster roll, Japanese milk bread, puffed wild rice and katsu curry sauce has been a firm favourite. As has the Eaves Hall Farm lamb rump, roasted courgette with
pomegranate, coriander and juniper, ricotta, sticky lamb belly cous cous and lavender lamb jus. Both showcase Bob’s ability to coax depth of flavour out of classic pairings while presenting them in a way that feels modern. With the autumn shift, guests can expect bolder flavours, richer sauces and a few surprises. Bob is known for balancing comfort food with moments of invention and the team hint at local game and Grindleton lamb, squashes and late season greens taking centre stage.
The Rum Fox is not only about a midweek meal or a Sunday roast. It has quietly become a place where life’s celebrations take place.
Weddings and private dining are part of the story here, with the building’s characterful spaces providing an inviting backdrop. Very soon the Christmas programme will be unveiled, available to book from mid-September. It promises festive classics handled with the same care as the regular menus, where turkey might share the table with unexpected seasonal flavours and desserts lean into indulgence. For many in the Ribble Valley the festive season at The Rum Fox is fast becoming a tradition. Don’t miss out – get your table booked now. Another strand of the story is Fox Fusions, a series of collaborations with restaurants around the country. These evenings are about more than guest chefs taking over the stove. They are conversations between kitchens, opportunities to share ideas and
showcase how different regions approach food. The very first, held with The Shibden Mill Inn, sold out almost as soon as it was announced. Diners were treated to a menu that combined signatures from both restaurants, highlighting just how energising these exchanges can be. For those who want to be in the loop, signing up to The Skulk through the Rum Fox website is the best way to stay informed about future collaborations.
Midweek visitors are particularly well served by the set lunches, offered Wednesday to Saturday between 12 noon and 2pm. At £30 for two courses or £36 for three, they offer excellent value without ever cutting corners. The weekly changing
menu means there is always something new and exciting to try, the likes of which have included Grindleton lamb kebab and a chicken and tarragon pie. The same menus are also available Wednesday and Thursday evenings, making them an appealing option for a relaxed but satisfying supper. And if you are looking to go all out there is also their sensational tasting menu.
FOR MANY IN THE RIBBLE VALLEY THE FESTIVE SEASON AT THE RUM FOX IS FAST BECOMING A TRADITION
Sunday lunch, however, remains the beating heart of The Rum Fox. Three sittings every week mean more than 100 guests are served and the atmosphere is one of warmth and conviviality. It’s hard not to be drawn in by the sight of a plate of roast sirloin of beef, Yorkshire pudding standing tall and glossy red wine gravy poured at the table. Equally tempting is the slow roasted pork belly with its crisp crackling and apple compote. At £40 for two courses or £45 for three, it feels like a generous offering, particularly given the quality of the produce.
Over the course of an average week the restaurant now serves around 400 covers, a figure that speaks volumes about its popularity.
Beyond the food, The Rum Fox has gained recognition from the industry. The Michelin Guide 2025 praises the inn saying: “Well sourced produce and textbook execution.”
A concise description that captures what makes the place tick. The Good Food Guide 2024 calls The Rum Fox: “One of Britain’s cosiest pubs” - a nod to the balance of fine dining and familiar comfort. Meanwhile,
the Top 50 Gastropubs 2025 has named it a finalist in the “One to Watch” category. These accolades are not just about polish but about a restaurant that feels both ambitious and grounded.
What ties it all together is the steady presence of Bob in the kitchen. Unlike many chefs who lend their name but not their time, Bob is permanently at the pass, keeping a close eye on execution. The result is a consistency that guests have come to trust. Regulars return for the reassurance that the food will deliver every time, while newcomers are struck by the precision and creativity that sits behind what first looks like a cosy country pub.
The Rum Fox is a place where the consistency of craft meets the spark of creativity and that is what keeps people returning again and again. n

LAYERS OF FLAVOUR, TAILORED FOR YOUR OCCASION
The team at Northcote has always been ambitious about growing the business and offering its award-winning food to a wider audience. Today, that ambition is greater than ever with the new ownership of the 26-bedroom luxury hotel and Michelin starred restaurant, enabling Northcote to launch an exciting new venture. Blooming Onion is an outside catering concept that is providing the exceptional quality food for which Northcote is highly renowned. All catering for Blooming Onion is undertaken by Lisa and her kitchen brigade.
Northcote’s outside catering had previously been known as ‘Northcote at Home’. “With Blooming Onion, we will do anything from a barbecue to a canapé event, or something more elaborate - whether it is in the home, a corporate location, or at another venue,” explains Lisa. The inspiration behind the Blooming Onion name reflects Lisa’s love of onions, one of her favourite ingredients, and the fact that it is a nod to the northern roots of Northcote.
At this stage, nothing is off the menu: “We’re very ambitious and will deliver parties to the highest expectations, whether it is a style of food of your liking or something highly creative. We love a challenge and would be happy to prepare any type of cuisine, and we would do it with a Lisa Goodwin-Allen twist,” Lisa said. The creation of Blooming Onion has been made possible by the support and encouragement of long-standing guests of the hotel, Alf and Clare Ellis, whose acquisition of Northcote in April marks their first foray into the hospitality sector.
“They are very passionate about the industry and have had great success as entrepreneurs in building up their own businesses, Ultima Furniture Systems and DIY Kitchens, based in Yorkshire, and want to grow the business here,” says Lisa. “It’s a massively exciting time for Northcote. There are endless possibilities and opportunities. Who knows how big you can grow an onion? If you leave it in the ground long enough, it can grow blooming big!”

BEHIND THE CURTAIN
For over 60 years, The Hall Players have been at the heart of Preston’s theatre scene – uniting generations of performers, volunteers and audiences with a shared love of the stage, writes Ali Gudgeon
The story of The Hall Players begins with a small stage, a shared dream and a community eager to come together. In 1960, a group of parishioners from St John Baptist Church in Preston staged a handful of plays at Broughton School Hall. Their aim was simple, to raise funds for a new parish hall. But what grew from those early productions was something far bigger – a society that has become one of Preston’s most cherished cultural institutions. By March 1961, enthusiasm was running high and the decision to establish an amateur dramatic society was taken. One month later, the first committee gathered and with that, The Hall Players were born. Their debut performance, Quiet Weekend by Esther McCraken, took place that November, marking
the beginning of a tradition that has spanned more than six decades.
Today, The Hall Players are still thriving, producing three plays every season and winning accolades along the way. Their 2024 production of The Three Musketeers scooped the NODA award for Best Drama, cementing their reputation as one of the region’s finest amateur groups.
MOVING TO THE PLAYHOUSE IN 2019 WAS A BIG STEP FOR US, BUT THE SPIRIT OF THE HALL PLAYERS HAS NEVER CHANGED
They are kicking off their 65th season with the premiere of ‘Short Sharp Shocks’ by Andy Bennison this October. Since 2019, they’ve called Preston’s historic Playhouse Theatre home – the city’s last remaining working theatre and a hub for six resident drama groups.
The enduring success of The Hall Players isn’t just about great scripts or standing ovations. It’s about people – generations of front and backstage volunteers, who give their time, creativity and energy to make each production a reality.
From lighting and sound to tickets and costumes, everything is handled by members.
“There’s such a wealth of talent in the city,” says long-standing member Maureen Nickson. “It’s the people that keep the theatre alive.”
Few embody that dedication more than Cliff and Bette Bell, the group’s presidents. Bette managed the box office for an extraordinary 45 years, while Cliff – a former journalist –joined in 1975 and has served in almost every role imaginable.
Now 87, Cliff reflects fondly: “Back then, there were just a dozen or so founding members. Moving to the Playhouse in 2019 was a big step for us, but the spirit of The Hall Players has never changed. It’s always been about friendship, hard work and putting on theatre we can be proud of.”
That sense of family is more than metaphorical. For many members, involvement spans generations. Bridget Sanderson, now 35, made her first appearance aged just three, playing a woodland bird in Babes in the Wood.
Since then, Bridget has acted, choreographed pantomimes and even scooped a NODA award for her performance in The Three Musketeers. Her children are already showing signs of carrying on the tradition –
her eight-year-old son recently helped sell ice cream at a show.
“To me, The Hall Players aren’t just a drama group,” Bridget explains. “I see them as my extended family because I grew up with them. Some of my closest friendships started on that stage and now my kids are beginning to get involved too.”
But it isn’t only about long-standing members – The Hall Players also attract newcomers who bring fresh energy and ideas. Among them is Suzie Evans, who joined after years away from the stage.
“Getting back on stage for the first time since my A Level Theatre Studies exam was daunting,” Suzie admits. “But the wonderful people in The Hall Players welcomed me with open arms. What struck me most is just how professional the productions are, even though everyone is a volunteer. Performing and volunteering here feels like being part of something really special. In a world dominated by digital screens, it feels like a little haven where you feel part of the local community and can express your creativity.”
WHAT STRUCK ME MOST IS JUST HOW PROFESSIONAL THE PRODUCTIONS ARE, EVEN THOUGH EVERYONE IS A VOLUNTEER
The Playhouse Theatre, where the group now performs, is itself a living piece of Preston’s cultural history. Established in 1949 by Preston Drama Club with the help of local patrons, it remains a volunteer-run venue and registered charity. Today it hosts everything from pantomimes to musicals, operas to dramas – ensuring Preston retains a vibrant stage scene.
From Cliff and Bette’s decades of service, to Bridget’s lifelong journey with the group, to Suzie’s rediscovery of her love for acting, the company is a true blend of generations –proof that theatre thrives when people come together.
As Cliff sums up: “It’s a lovely bunch of people, always welcoming and the standard now is so high. I’m really proud of what we’ve built.” n
