Welcome to the summer issue of Live Ribble Valley! As the sun comes out and the valley bursts into life, we’re thrilled to bring you a season full of fresh inspiration and stories of transformation.
In this issue, we’re shining a light on some extraordinary individuals making waves right here in our beautiful corner of the county.
We talk to biohacking expert Davinia Taylor, whose dynamic energy and cutting-edge approach to health and wellbeing are taking the Ribble Valley by storm. With the move of her UK headquarters to Clitheroe, Davinia is setting the tone for a new era of wellness innovation: “I want it to be a space where our team feels energised and where ideas flow,” she says.
We fire up the grill with Doug Imber, whose Australian roots and love of barbecuing have developed into a full-blown passion project since settling in the UK. Doug’s story takes us from the beach-lined suburbs of Sydney to the rolling hills of the Ribble Valley.
And, we meet Carly and Jordan Young, the creative minds behind Bottle Wicks, a luxury sustainable candle business borne from an unexpected stopover in Milan. Their story proves that sometimes the best ideas come when you least expect them.
We also talk to Stephen Atkinson, who was elected to represent Reform UK and is now the new leader of Lancashire County Council. He shares his vision for the future of the region and how he plans to bring meaningful change for the people of Lancashire.
Wherever you’re reading this, from a pretty, sun-drenched garden or your favourite local café, we hope you enjoy this summer issue of Live Ribble Valley.

WELLNESS WARRIOR
Busy mum of four and ‘accidental CEO’ Davinia Taylor is a leading authority in the world of biohacking and now she’s brought her global wellness brand to Clitheroe
Davinia Taylor shows no signs of slowing down. Fresh from launching another Number One Sunday Times bestseller, she’s on a mission to help people feel as good as she does – and her story proves that reinvention isn’t just possible – it’s powerful.
WE NEED TO STOP FEARING AGEING AND START PREPARING FOR IT WITH REAL KNOWLEDGE. IT’S NOT ABOUT PERFECTION, IT’S ABOUT VITALITY
The founder and CEO of WillPowders, Davinia has brought her international wellness brand to the Ribble Valley and is set to transform a three-storey office block in Clitheroe into WillPowders’ UK headquarters. Designed to reflect everything Davinia stands for, the space will feature a ground-floor wellness zone for the WillPowders’ team, with ice baths, a gym and an infra-red sauna. Upstairs, light-filled offices with standing desks and air-filtering tech will support employee wellbeing from the inside out.

“Think Silicon Valley – but biohacked! That’s what we’re bringing to Clitheroe,” says Davinia. “I want it to be a space where our team feels energised, where ideas flow and where we can continue helping people take charge of their health.”
It’s a bold move, but boldness is something Davinia has never shied away from. Born and raised in Lancashire, she found fame in the 1990s playing wild child and party girl Jude Cunningham on Hollyoaks.
Eventually the bright lights called and at 21 Davinia moved to London, where she lived for 25 years: “I loved it – the energy, the buzz,” she says. “But after my fourth child, I hit a wall. I had no energy, no enthusiasm. I just felt flat. I’d lost that spark.”
THINK SILICON VALLEYBUT BIOHACKED! THAT’S WHAT WE’RE BRINGING TO CLITHEROE. I WANT IT TO BE A SPACE WHERE OUR TEAM FEELS ENERGISED, WHERE IDEAS FLOW
It was her husband Matthew who first introduced her to the idea of biohacking –optimising your biology with simple, science-backed strategies: “He was following an American biohacker on social media who was putting MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil in his coffee. I tried it and suddenly, I felt better. I wasn’t crashing all the time after eating too many carbs. I had energy again,” adds Davinia, who discovered MCT is readily metabolised into ketones –while carbs, if eaten in excess, are metabolised into glucose and in turn, stored as body fat. Her new-found spark and energy turned into a passion and Davinia took a deep dive into the science, studying nutrition, metabolic health and the gut-brain connection.
She biohacked her way back to optimum physical health, lost three stone and dramatically lowered her biological age. What started as a personal mission became a professional calling, culminating in the launch of WillPowders in 2022.
“I realised we didn’t have anything like this in the UK so I thought, ‘Why not do it better here?’”
WillPowders was built on Davinia’s belief that people need practical, effective tools to keep healthy and strong. The WillPowders range includes bestsellers like Bovine Collagen Peptides, Keto Protein Powder and Scandinavian Vanilla Protein. Everything is obsessively sourced personally by Davinia, who only uses the purest ingredients for

maximum effect: “I meet with farmers in Switzerland to source our collagen. Their cows are grass-fed by law, with no pesticides.”
Unlike many protein products, WillPowders’ are based on bone broth: “Bone broth is full of natural protein and fats. It’s so pure, you can give it to the kids. It’s like convenience superfood.
“You only need to look at the comments on social media to see that biohacking and eating well changes people’s lives. It’s not about counting calories, it about mindset and feeling in control – and everything starts with the gut-brain axis. What you eat affects your decisions,” adds Davinia, who
runs daily on Longridge Fell and completed her first marathon in 2020.
Her first book, It’s Not a Diet, chronicled her transformation from party girl to wellness entrepreneur, using biohacking to get her brain and body working again. Her latest release, Futureproof, builds on that foundation, showing readers how to hack their biological age and build real resilience. The book tackles inflammation, muscle mass, protein intake, mobility and stress. “We need to stop fearing ageing and start preparing for it with real knowledge,” says Davinia. “It’s not about perfection, it’s about vitality.”

Her northern sense of humour and honesty is part of what sets her apart. On social media, she’s refreshingly open about everything from hormone shifts to parenting dramas. No filters, just genuine advice backed by science and experience. “You can’t meditate your way out of a magnesium deficiency,” she laughs.
THE RIBBLE VALLEY IS THE BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD! WE’RE SURROUNDED BY NATURE, THE KIDS THRIVE HERE AND THE LOCAL PRODUCE IS AMAZING
Despite her success, Davinia is firmly rooted in her northern identity – she’s down-to-earth, direct and driven. Her loyal following trusts her not just because she’s done the research, but because she’s lived it. Her brand isn’t selling unattainable lifestyles it’s offering achievable tools to drive change.
WillPowders is now hugely successful with a growing retail presence and a fiercely

loyal customer base. But for Davinia, it’s not about the numbers, it’s about the mission.
“We live in a world that can drain us –emotionally, physically and nutritionally. WillPowders is about giving people the tools and the determination to fight back. Whether it’s a supplement to boost focus, or greens to support your gut, we want to demystify wellness and make it do-able.”
With Clitheroe as the nerve centre of that mission, Davinia is turning her hometown into a beacon for wellbeing innovation: “The Ribble Valley is the best place in the world!” she says enthusiastically. “We’re surrounded by nature, the kids thrive here and the local produce is amazing. We have fantastic farmers and artisan producers so we have no excuse not to eat well. I love living here.” n

A Stunning Walnut Kitchen Designed for Living, Relaxing & Entertaining
Andrew and Wendy had often admired the Kitchen Design Centre showroom in Blackburn, regularly passing by and taking note of the beautiful displays in the windows. So, when it came time to transform their home with a large rear extension, they knew exactly where to start.
Stepping into the Blackburn showroom, they were struck by the sheer breadth of design possibilities. From timeless traditional to sleek and modern, the displays offered inspiration at every turn. Unsure of the direction they wanted to take, they found themselves equally drawn to both the classic and more contemporary styles.
What made the difference, though, was working with Blackburn designer Lou Roberts. From the very first meeting, Andrew and Wendy felt Lou really listened, guiding them through each stage of the design process with clarity, creativity, and patience.
Though they initially leaned towards a classic shaker design, they found themselves repeatedly drawn to the striking walnut kitchen display. Inspired by the warmth and sophistication of the walnut tones, Lou designed a bespoke kitchen that perfectly suited their new open-plan space.
The layout is cleverly zoned, with a generous breakfast bar, a media wall, and a dedicated bar area that brings a sense of flow and purpose to each part of the room. It’s a space designed not just for cooking, but for relaxing, entertaining, and everyday living.
The end result is a kitchen that’s both visually stunning and highly functional bringing warmth, elegance, and a true sense of purpose to their extended home.
To read more about how we designed this kitchen and to view the video tour of it visit: www.kitchendesigncentre.com

Designer Lou Roberts says,
“It was a real pleasure working with Andrew and Wendy on this project. With the extension providing a blank canvas, I had the freedom to create a layout that really flowed and brought purpose to every part of the space. They were drawn to our walnut display in the showroom, so it was exciting to adapt that look to suit their home. The end result has real impact and definitely.

SOAK UP THE SUMMER SUN
July is the month for you to get out and enjoy your garden whether it’s an open area in the country or a more compact urban space
The lazy, hazy days of summer are best spent enjoying the plants that you have lovingly nurtured and cared for over the past months that are now in full flower.
You do need to keep an eye on watering this month to make sure your garden doesn’t suffer from dehydration, but make sure you are water-wise. You can conserve water and help plants in the summer by moving pots out of full sun into the shade where possible. Some tips for good watering include using water-retaining gel in containers, water the area directly above the roots of plants, use grey water from washing up and a good watering less frequently is better than watering little and often.
Another way to conserve water and moisture is to ensure that there is good ground cover planting in beds and borders – it acts like a mulch helping to suppress weeds and lock in soil moisture and nutrients. Hardy geraniums, campanula and creeping herbs such as thyme are easy growing ground cover plants as are strawberries.
Using strawberries offers a variety of benefits to both plants and gardeners. In addition to providing delicious fruit, their shallow root system helps prevent soil compaction and also improves soil structure whilst their white and
pink flowers attract beneficial pollinators. Strawberries like well-draining and fertile soil and thrive in full sun but can also do well in partial shade. They require consistent moisture, especially during flowering and fruiting so need to be watered regularly.

IF I HAD MY WAY, I’D REMOVE JANUARY FROM THE CALENDAR ALTOGETHER AND HAVE AN EXTRA JULY INSTEAD
Roald Dahl
There are several different types of strawberry plants – early, mid and late summer varieties, perpetual strawberries and alpines – with popular varieties including Cambridge Favourite – best known and most reliable, producing medium-sized, orange-
thousands of years to calm anxiety and settle stomachs. People in ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt used dried chamomile flowers and their essential oils as a medicinal herb. There is some evidence that chamomile can ease anxiety and maybe even help you sleep better. n
TOP TIPS FOR JULY FROM THE RHS:
• Deadhead, feed and water for a long-lasting show of flowers
• Clear algae, blanket weed and debris from ponds and keep topped up
• Don’t worry if the lawn goes brown, it will bounce back once it rains
• Water tubs and new plants if dry, but be water-wise
• Organise care for houseplants while on holiday
• Check for pests – especially aphids
• Pick courgettes before they become marrows
• Start picking tomatoes as they ripen and continue to feed and water
• Plant out leeks and brassicas for a winter harvest
• Give regular liquid feed to fruit or veg growing in containers

NEXT GENERATION
It’s time to embrace the great British summer and all that entails –whether it’s enjoying homemade pizza in the bright sunshine or cosying up on cool evenings around the fire
Master British stove maker ESSE has unveiled this summer’s most versatile must-have –a stunning, next-generation, outdoor garden stove complete with pizza oven.
Along with welcome warmth and a clear view of the flames, al fresco diners can enjoy mouth-watering pizzas in just two minutes, with authentic wood-fired flavour. The rectangular cooking chamber above the firebox measures 410mm wide x 395mm depth – ideal for a 10-slice 14-inch sharing pizza.
As the UK’s oldest stove manufacturer, established in 1854, ESSE understands the British stove market and the changeable British seasons. This practical garden stove comes complete with wheels to move positions and escape the wetter weather, as well as being easily stored away if required.
Unlike stone-built pizza ovens, this portable model means you can pick the perfect spot for it depending on your mood or the position of the sun – you might opt for pizzas on the patio or long leisurely lunches on the lawn.
It comes with a 1000mm length flue pipe to take smoke up away from garden gatherings and has a built-in rear air slide to conveniently control the burn rate.
The wood-fired pizza oven provides a sustainable and traditional way of cooking, without hassle. The steel plate’s heat retention and distribution means you can achieve restaurant-quality pizzas with an authentic wood-fired flavour and deliciously charred crust, while the high temperatures also burn off residue to leave a clean cooking surface for each use.

ESSE Director Peter Ashby explains: “We’re very proud of our new garden stove with pizza oven because it packs so many practical benefits into an outdoor stove that’s incredibly stylish in its own right. It’s a great focal point for any garden or terrace and is already proving equally popular with food lovers and garden enthusiasts. I don’t think outdoor cooking has ever looked this good!”

THIS PORTABLE MODEL MEANS YOU CAN PICK THE PERFECT SPOT –YOU MIGHT OPT FOR PIZZAS ON THE PATIO OR LONG LEISURELY LUNCHES ON THE LAWN
Even when the nights begin to draw in again, this stove allows you to enjoy more of the great outdoors with its flickering flame pattern, welcome warmth and plenty of surface space for hot drinks. The traditional stove-style door means it can be enjoyed all year round.

The British-built Esse garden stove features a grate log bed with ash pan, an optional retrofit BBQ grill and is supplied complete with 1000mm length flue pipe and heat-proof leather mitt. n homes

CARVING OUT THE FUTURE
The rise of eco-consciousness means clients demand more than beautiful design – they want their furniture to come with sustainability credentials
The cabinetmaking process, by its very nature, uses precious resources and energy throughout, so demonstrating a measurable commitment to sustainability can be tricky, but not impossible. For those looking for a more eco-friendly approach here are a few things to look out for when choosing your bespoke furniture.
A key benefit of good craftsmanship is its longevity – well-made pieces can last decades, withstanding repainting and even relocation. Choosing quality also means prioritising sustainability so look for FSC-certified, UK-sourced materials where possible.
Clients increasingly want reassurance that environmental responsibility is a priority. At The Secret Drawer, it is. Their workshop is partly powered by 176 solar panels, electric vehicles are part of their fleet and waste is minimised by turning sawdust –a by-product of the crafting process – into briquettes used to heat the workshop.

Calculating carbon footprint can be complex, but one clear way to reduce it is by sourcing locally. At The Secret Drawer, this has long been a priority – well before it became a trend. Using local artisans for the finishing touches such as upholstery is central to their sustainable approach.
But what about the sustainability of the skill itself? Without new people entering the craft, centuries-old traditions would

A
KEY BENEFIT OF GOOD CRAFTSMANSHIP IS ITS LONGEVITY
The Secret Drawer has an ongoing apprenticeship scheme and our apprentice Tom says: “I enjoyed woodwork at school but didn’t realise I could make cabinetmaking my career. It is a great career choice and I would recommend it.”
When choosing bespoke furniture consider the following low impact checklist: Wood
• The wood used is readily available, naturally renewable and FSC certified.
• Waste is minimised and reused Local
• Furniture is handcrafted locally and other materials (like handles) are sourced locally where possible Durability
• A sustainable approach to design of high quality furniture that is made to last a lifetime. n
soon be lost. A healthy apprentice scheme not only provides a pathway for talented young people but also keeps the skills alive. Rooted in the traditional techniques of British cabinetmaking and shaped by decades of experience, The Secret Drawer is built on a foundation of well proportioned and practical design and the highest standards of craftsmanship, using quality materials. Making bespoke interiors requires patience, precision and passion at every stage of the process, as well as a wealth of experience. secret-drawer.co.uk

AUTHENTICITY & GRANDEUR
This sophisticated apartment has been designed with simplicity in mind presenting the ultimate in understated elegance
Located in one of the most famous design capitals, in the heart of Lombardy, Italy, this contemporary sophisticated apartment has been transformed by Ashley Gadeova, for Caffe Latte and Covet House.
Sublime yet cosy, it is divided into three fundamental areas in an open plan regime, to provide the greatest comfort and wellbeing, based on straight and elegant lines.
As soon as you enter there is a majestic kitchen in white and marble tones, a kitchen island and a Liberty small pendant for sophisticated lighting.
Large and spacious, the dining room is the ideal example of minimalism and functionality with an Ezra dining table chosen for its soft mid-century inspiration and Moka dining chairs, from Caffe Latte.
The nature-inspired lighting in the centre, with its trendy biophilic design that enhances the ambience, adds a touch of
luxury to the mix.
As for the main area of the apartment, the living room is more conventional, presenting itself in a typical modern classic style, without ever failing to comply with the principle of functionality and wellbeing that guides all interiors.
Through a curvilinear design, the Odette sofa delivers elegance and relaxation, along with a Demitasse armchair, in a minimalist, unique design.
SIMPLICITY, CARRIED TO AN EXTREME, BECOMES ELEGANCE
The simplicity offers great contrast to the grandeur of this apartment which has been designed by Gadeova in collaboration with Caffe Latte and Covet House, who are expanding horizons, giving us a privileged view of Milan’s modern sophistication and authenticity.
Caffe Latte’s designs bring ergonomics and functionality to any room, with a modern minimalist approach that complements other aesthetics with the use of a neutral colour palette, ultimately presenting a design that appeals to all. n

STYLE YOUR HOME FROM THE FLOOR UP
What started as a small family business has stayed true to its original values and evolved over the years to become Lancashire’s leading independent flooring specialist, writes Katie Hammond
Photography: Michael Porter
When husband and wife team
Steven and Susan Morton first opened the doors to The Flooring Centre NW Ltd. back in 2008, along with son Michael, they could not have foreseen that they would build a business which would eventually serve the needs of both residential and commercial customers across Lancashire and the whole of the North West.
Latterly joined by daughter Michelle, the family now head up a large team of sales advisors, specialist fitters and flooring experts and their business is all about personal and exceptional service, with varied options for all budgets being a priority.

Michelle explains: “It’s a cliché, but we genuinely are like one big, happy family. Our reputation has been built on providing exactly what our customers need, with our friendly team tailoring solutions specifically to fit their requirements and always doing our best to accommodate their price points.
IT’S A CLICHÉ, BUT WE GENUINELY ARE LIKE ONE BIG, HAPPY FAMILY. OUR REPUTATION HAS BEEN BUILT ON PROVIDING EXACTLY WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS NEED
“We have 500 square metres of showroom space across four units which allows us to showcase a massive range of products to give customers an insight into the full range of options available to them. Our in-store design tables are perfect for chatting projects through with one of our flooring specialists – with
your ideas and our expertise combined, we will create something unique which will fit all your requirements perfectly.”
The Flooring Centre are justifiably proud of their status as an Amtico One Exclusive Retail Partner supplying the full Amtico range including Amtico Spacia and Amtico Signature – recently joined by the more budget friendly Amtico First.
Michelle continues: “Amtico is renowned as luxury flooring, but they have recognised the need to cater to customers such as firsttime home buyers, who might not have been able to previously consider it as their brand of choice as per the price point.
“The Amtico First range is designed to offer more affordable luxury with all the benefits that the brand is known for – hardwearing but stylish durability and the freedom to create your own individual designer floor.”
With every type of flooring available, from high end carpet brands to hard wood,

laminates, vinyl or alternative natural options and bargain roll ends, the friendly team are always on hand to advise and guide customers to the perfect end-result to suit their individual lifestyle and home.
A popular evening and weekend measuring service is available completely free of charge and the team are equipped to deliver all manner of projects, with the most experienced local fitters expertly managing each installation.
The Flooring Centre work with leading manufacturers including Burmatex, Forbo, Polyflor and Danflor, to ensure commercial customers can also enjoy a tailored and bespoke service. After an initial consultation, a complementary survey is conducted to determine which flooring is best suited to

the customer’s needs, based on footfall and other impacts, always working towards agreed budgets and timescales to fit around the business and ensure minimum impact and disruption.
IT’S ALWAYS SUCH A PLEASURE TO HEAR FROM OUR SATISFIED CUSTOMERS THAT OUR THOROUGH APPROACH AND ATTENTION TO EVERY DETAIL HAS EXCEEDED THEIR EXPECTATIONS
Back to projects for the home and reflecting on how her family’s business has built its enviable and hard-earned reputation, Michelle

concludes: “We manage every project from start to finish, from clearing furniture and removing existing floors through to vacuuming up and removing all product waste. It’s always such a pleasure to hear from our satisfied customers that our thorough approach and attention to every detail has exceeded their expectations – they can then enjoy their new, beautiful floor for years to come.” n

CLASSIC COMBINATION
Freestanding furniture is a growing kitchen trend, but fitted cabinets are still essential. Homeowners are blending both, adding portable storage or prep solutions, like this versatile, moveable, bespoke island, designed to complement the walnut cabinetry and maximize space.
THE RISE OF FREESTANDING
How to combine the freestanding trend with fitted classics for a stylish revamp of your home.
Balancing the relaxed charm of freestanding furniture with the sleek efficiency of fitted design is key when creating a functional, stylish home. The bespoke furniture of fitted rooms offer a cohesive look, while freestanding spaces bring flexibility and character. Driven by sustainability and the rise of the ‘granny aesthetic,’ freestanding design is appealing—but can it last?
In practical spaces like kitchens and bathrooms, where plumbing and electrics limit layout, success lies in smart planning and mixing old and new thoughtfully. Choose reclaimed furniture carefully, ensuring it can handle a potentially punishing round of upcycling. But what if the freestanding pieces were designed along with the fitted furniture? An approach that provides a cohesive, yet flexible alternative.

“Practical design considers both present and future needs,” says Richard Mason, Furniture Designer and owner of The Secret Drawer.
“Clients increasingly see our furniture as a lifetime investment—practical, bespoke, designs that reflect their personality and offer flexibility,” Pieces from The Secret Drawer Freestanding range like chairs and tables, can be made to any height, finished in any fabric or wood, and easily moved to suit changing spaces or homes.

What about pieces that appear fitted? The bespoke boot room furniture (8) and glass cabinet (3) were designed as part of complete room schemes and complement the handcrafted fitted elements. While secured to the wall for safety, they can be easily relocated, reinstalled and even repainted if needed.
The rise of freestanding furniture offers a perfect complement to fitted designs. Designed in combination these elements can provide an extra means to express individuality and additional versatility in terms of aesthetics and function.
Done well, freestanding pieces are timeless, practical, and easy to adapt as needs evolve.

CLICK, SHIP, PLANT: THE FUTURE OF GARDENING HAS ARRIVED
Bannister Hall launches EverythingPlants.co.uk sparking a new era in garden inspiration
This July, the world of British gardening takes an elegant leap forward with the launch of EverythingPlants.co.uk, a breathtakingly beautiful new online destination for anyone with a passion for exquisite outdoor spaces. Brought to you by Bannister Hall Landscaping Design, Materials and Plants Centre, the new site is more than just a shop – it’s a digital gardening repository of planting information, curated by a business with over 30 years of horticultural expertise.
Coinciding with the opening of their new state-of-the-art Landscaping Design Centre at Potter Lane, Higher Walton, just outside

Preston, the launch marks a significant milestone in Bannister Hall’s 30-year journey of greening the nation. Known for its exceptional plants, professional-grade materials and thoughtful, tailored service, Bannister Hall has long been a trusted supplier to everyone from award-winning Chelsea Flower Show designers to local authorities, national housebuilders and, of course, discerning private homeowners.
Now, with EverythingPlants.co.uk, their horticultural magic is available to all –delivered straight to your door nationwide, with specialist vehicles and handled with the care only a nursery-grown product deserves.

A VISUAL FEAST FOR THE MODERN GARDENER
Designed with aesthetics and ease in mind, the website is nothing short of a garden designer’s dream. The online experience is driven by rich, quality photography, allowing users to browse thousands of plants and materials with stunning visual detail. You can see exactly what you’re buying – whether it’s the height and shape of a pleached hornbeam, the delicate silvered foliage of a 100-year-old olive tree or the sculptural perfection of spiral bay topiary. Perhaps you need 50 metres of a fully grown hedgerow, or luscious fruit trees – no problem at all!
Searching for something specific? The site offers simple filters to browse by colour palette, height, growth rate, sun or shade tolerance, flowering season and more. Want

a pollinator-friendly palette for a southfacing terrace, or a formal evergreen screen for a city garden? It’s all there curated and categorised with clarity and care. Moreover, the site provides instant access to trained online horticulturalists, ready to impart their green-fingered wisdom to help you make the right choice for your outdoor sanctuary.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR A BEAUTIFUL GARDEN
True to its name, EverythingPlants.co.uk provides not only an exceptional selection of trees, shrubs, perennials and topiary, but also a full range of landscaping materials –from fertilisers, topsoil and compost, to decorative aggregates and bark mulches. Bannister Hall’s commitment to quality is not just skin-deep. The plants themselves are either grown at one of the company’s three privately owned nurseries in Lancashire, or carefully sourced via a trusted European network. That means if you’re dreaming of something more architectural like a mature specimen acer, a cloud-pruned ilex, or a grand wisteria in full bloom, Bannister Hall can have it sourced and delivered within a matter of days.
Whether your style leans toward lush Mediterranean planting, romantic English herbaceous borders, or clean-lined

contemporary minimalism, you’ll find both inspiration and substance here.
SEASONALITY MEETS SMART SHOPPING
As the height of summer arrives, the garden is at its most abundant. July and August bring with them clouds of lavender, towering hydrangeas, echinacea, salvia, crocosmia, and agapanthus in full bloom. These are the months of fragrance, form and pollinators. EverythingPlants.co.uk offers detailed growing guides for each, covering pruning tips, soil preferences and seasonal care advice – a digital horticultural masterclass, freely accessible to all.
And for those thinking ahead, the site even includes a forward-planning feature so you can pre-order bare root and root ball hedging, often at a preferential price, for autumn delivery. The bare root season begins in November and it’s one of the best times to invest in longer hedging runs, large-scale planting projects or cost-effective multibuys, all of which are seamlessly handled via the site.
The platform also allows customers to select plant root types – whether pot-grown, root ball or bare root, ensuring buyers have full visibility on price points and what’s best for their garden and the season.

BUILT FOR DESIGNERS –LOVED BY HOMEOWNERS
While the site is undoubtedly a joy for enthusiastic amateurs, it’s also been meticulously designed to also meet the needs of professional garden designers and landscapers. Trade login accounts, volume discounts and fast site delivery ensure that Bannister Hall’s longstanding relationship with the trade community is preserved and enhanced in this new digital format.
It’s this balance between high-end retail elegance and professional-grade substance, that sets EverythingPlants.co.uk apart. The website doesn’t just sell plants, it brings confidence, clarity and a level of designfocused usability that makes it a powerful tool for anyone serious about creating beautiful outdoor environments.
A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE
With over 30 years of horticultural heritage, Bannister Hall’s new chapter is a celebration of everything it has stood for – quality, service and a deep knowledge of plants. It’s no surprise their client list includes the NHS, major property developers, public bodies and some of the UK’s most celebrated garden designers.
Whether you’re dreaming of a sculptural centrepiece, a privacy screen of shimmering Portuguese laurel or a soft palette of seasonal perennials to border a modern patio, EverythingPlants.co.uk is where that journey now begins.
Elegant and effortless with expertise. Visit everythingplants.co.uk and let your gardening inspiration begin from your armchair. n

Chesneys: Design and Performance
Chesneys are one of the UK’s leading luxury heating products brands. Much sought after, their wood burning stoves are outstanding in their design, performance and efficiency. Split into two collections - the Heritage Range and the new Contemporary Collection - the wood burning stoves are at the forefront of innovation.
Chesneys research and development team have designed a brand-new combustion system in line with BS16510 which greatly exceeds all current regulatory requirements in both efficiency and emissions. Here we feature just two fires from the new collection: Solstice and Sanctuary.

Solstice
With an elegant cylindrical design, the Solstice features a convenient wood store and an unusually large glass window. This contemporary stove delivers low emissions and high efficiency.
The Solstice is available raised on a pedestal, log store or low base.
Sanctuary
Sleek and contemporary, the Sanctuary is designed to be minimalist. The ‘less is more’ ethos is carried through design and into performance (less emissions / more efficient output).
The Sanctuary also features a ‘no handle’ hidden soft touch opening and closing mechanism.

Chesneys at Burning Desire
As an approved stockist, we have designed a purpose built Chesneys room here at Burning Desire. One of six fully furbished showrooms, the Chesneys room features industry leading stoves including the new contemporary collection that are available for live demonstration (if you ask, we light!). NOSE KNOW HOW
Rhinophyma, a severe form of rosacea, can impact confidence and quality of life. Discover Laser in Burnley offers UltraPulse CO2 laser treatment to restore natural contours and self-assurance
Characterised by thickened, uneven skin on the nose, rhinophyma often develops from untreated or severe rosacea. Commonly affecting men over 40, it can leave anyone feeling self-conscious and unsure where to turn.
Dr Miguel Montero at Discover Laser in Burnley offers life-changing treatments for rhinophyma using the UltraPulse CO2 laser, a powerful tool in dermatology.
Rhinophyma typically presents as a bulbous, enlarged nose with thickened skin and visible pores. In advanced cases, the excess tissue can obstruct nasal airflow, causing functional and aesthetic concerns.
Linked to advanced or untreated rosacea, it develops gradually and, like rosacea, can be triggered by sun exposure, alcohol, spicy foods or stress. While early medication intervention can help control rosacea, rhinophyma often requires a more targeted approach to address the thickened tissue and restore the nose’s natural shape.
Dr Montero explains how the UltraPulse CO2 laser has revolutionised the treatment of rhinophyma at his clinic: “UltraPulse is ideal for rhinophyma because it allows us to target thickened areas of the skin with incredible accuracy. The results are not just aesthetic – treatment can relieve discomfort and even improve breathing in severe cases.
“Precise and safe, the advanced laser technology removes excess tissue layer by layer, smoothing and reshaping the skin while preserving healthy underlying structures.
“Unlike surgery, laser treatment is minimally invasive with less downtime,
allowing our patients to return to normal routines within a week.”
Patients treated at Discover Laser often describe their journey as nothing short of transformative:
“The shape of my nose changed over 10 years, becoming lumpy and wider. I had seen a dermatologist who prescribed topical treatments for the redness, but they didn’t improve the lumpiness. I was concerned when I looked further into what rhinophyma can do to people. I didn’t want my nose to become an embarrassment.
“When I spoke to Dr Montero about treatment, I told him I wanted a smooth, narrower nose. He talked me through the treatment and answered my questions.
“My biggest fear was how much pain I’d have during treatment and after, but I followed the post-care instructions to the letter and had none. The whole experience was terrific from beginning to end and I’m 100% happy with the results. My confidence has come back and my fears of what might happen have gone.
“If you’re considering having treatment for rhinophyma, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dr Montero and UltraPulse.”
Discover Laser is a trusted destination for advanced dermatological skin care in the North West. If you or someone you know is living with rhinophyma, there’s no need to feel resigned to the condition. With expert care and advanced laser treatments, Discover Laser can help restore both appearance and confidence.
To book your ROSACEA CONSULTATION with Dr Montero, call Discover Laser’s team on 01282 420886

TEN YEARS YOUNGER

What if you could turn back the clock on your skin naturally, safely and without surgery?
For Barbara, this became reality through a personalised six-month skin rejuvenation journey at EMA, led by Emma Pearce, an advanced aesthetic practitioner with over 20 years of clinical experience.
Seeking a natural-looking solution to visible ageing, Barbara entrusted Emma with her skin. With deep expertise in skin science and the best aesthetic technologies available, Emma designed a bespoke, noninvasive treatment plan tailored specifically to Barbara’s concerns and skin profile. The results were long-lasting, clinically proven and achieved entirely without surgery.
Over six months, Barbara underwent a combination of cutting-edge treatments including Plasma Pen, EMA UL

Therapy, Hyapen, Morpheus8, EMA Em Face (electro magnetic facelift) and the Hydra CO 2 facial. This integrative approach improved skin firmness, dramatically softened fine lines and wrinkles, enhanced hydration and refined facial contours.
I’M ABSOLUTELY THRILLED WITH MY RESULTS, IT’S TAKEN YEARS OFF ME! I CAN’T RECOMMEND EMA HIGHLY ENOUGH
The transformation was striking. Barbara’s skin looked visibly firmer, brighter and more youthful. Fine lines were softened, her jawline regained definition and her overall complexion appeared at least 10 years younger.
EMA founder, Emma Pearce, explains: “Our longer-lasting, non-invasive treatments deliver
incredible results. Clients are often amazed by how refreshed and youthful they can look without injectables or surgery. Helping people feel confident in their own skin again is the most rewarding part of what I do.”
EMA is trusted by clients who want natural-looking, safe and effective results. Every journey begins with a thorough consultation, where your skin is assessed, your goals are understood and a personalised treatment plan is crafted –backed by science and years’ of experience.
Barbara’s story is just one of many. At EMA, transformation isn’t about changing how you look – it’s about revealing the best version of yourself.
Want to look as refreshed as you feel? Book your complimentary consultation with EMA today and take the first step toward younger, healthier-looking skin – no surgery required. n

BANISH VARICOSE VEINS
There’s no need to undergo expensive and risky surgery under general anaesthesia if you wish to say goodbye to
your varicose veins, thanks to RejuvaMed’s vein centre
Delivered by consultant vascular surgeon Mr Vittorio Perricone, RejuvaMed offers the only i ndependent varicose vein treatment centre in Lancashire. With a nationwide reputation for quality care and exceptional results, the centre is now established as the leading provider of varicose vein treatment in the North West at prices way below Lancashire’s private hospitals.
Mr Perricone has worked within the NHS and privately for more than 25 years, and now consults privately solely at RejuvaMed.
As Dr Grant McKeating, RejuvaMed’s Medical Director explains, the centre offers
a real alternative to the NHS: “Funding for treatment for varicose veins has been rationed by the NHS, meaning patients often have to pay for their procedure. Where NHS treatment is available, waiting lists are incredibly long. We offer consultation appointments within a couple of weeks, which include a duplex ultrasound scan of your veins. We can then proceed with your treatment plan.”
Our most frequently performed treatment is radiofrequency ablation under local anaesthetic, priced from just £1950. You are in and out of the clinic in less than two hours! Other options include the innovative VenaSealTM procedure, which uses medical adhesive rather than a heat source to seal the diseased vein. n

For more information on pricing, or to book a consultation with Mr Perricone, email: info@rejuvamed.co.uk or call the clinic on: 01200 538668
PRIVATE DERMATOLOGY NOW IN CLITHEROE!
Dr Grant McKeating explains RejuvaMed’s dermatology service, which now offers mole mapping
RejuvaMed now offers private dermatology services with Dr Ahsan Raza. Many of you may know Dr Raza, as he is a GP partner in a local practice and is also a GPwSI (GP with special interest) in dermatology. He now leads the community dermatology team and is an expert on all things ‘skin’!
The NHS is under severe pressure at the moment, and it can take considerable time to be seen by a dermatologist. Many issues are considered to be ‘cosmetic’ and will not qualify for NHS treatment.
If you have a skin lesion, mole, lump or bump that you’d like to have evaluated by an expert, Dr Raza can see you quickly, look at

Start small. One of the most effective tools for overcoming shame is self-compassion. Developed by researcher Dr Kristin Neff, self-compassion involves three main components:
Self-kindness: Treating yourself with care and understanding rather than harsh criticism.
Common humanity: Recognising that suffering and imperfection are part of the shared human experience.
Mindfulness: Noticing and allowing emotions without suppressing or exaggerating them. Admit that mistakes are part of learning. Developing this kind inner voice can change how you relate to your shame. Shame often
MIND MATTERS
Therapeutic coach Lynn Scholes explains how, with support and advice, we can heal the wounds of shame

Shame is a deeply uncomfortable and powerful emotion. Unlike guilt, which is tied to specific actions, shame affects how we see ourselves. It whispers: ‘You are bad,’ rather than: ‘You did something bad’. Left unaddressed, shame can lead to anxiety, depression, low self-worth and disconnection from others.
But the good news is, shame is not permanent –it can be understood, confronted and transformed. The first step to dealing with shame is understanding what it is and where it comes from. Shame often originates in childhood, stemming from experiences where we were criticised, rejected or made to feel unworthy. Traumas, social comparison, cultural expectations and even seemingly small moments of embarrassment can all contribute to a lasting sense of shame.
Shame thrives in secrecy. It makes us feel isolated, as if we’re uniquely flawed. But in reality, everyone experiences shame. Recognising its universality can begin to loosen its grip. One of the most important steps in addressing shame is learning to recognise your personal shame triggers. These might include:
• Feeling left out or excluded
• Making a mistake at work or in relationships
• Failing to meet your or others’ expectations
• Body image or appearance concerns
• Financial struggles or perceived inadequacies Pay attention to the physical sensations (tight chest, flushed face), thoughts (feeling worthless) and behaviours (withdrawing, apologising excessively) that accompany your shame responses. Journaling about these can help uncover patterns and contexts. As shame grows in silence, speaking about it can be incredibly healing. Sharing your experiences with someone you trust can help release the burden. Empathy is shame’s antidote. When someone responds to your vulnerability with compassion rather than judgment, it challenges the belief that you are unworthy. Working with a therapeutic coach with whom you have formed a trusting relationship can be the support you need to open up and share the shame. Whether with a friend or a professional you don’t need to overshare or disclose everything at once.
rests on the distorted belief that you’re not loveable or you always mess things up. These thoughts may feel true, but that doesn’t make them accurate. Your shame does not define you. Start by identifying your core shame beliefs. Where did they come from? Are they really yours, or were they imposed by others? Then, gently challenge them.
Shame can also stem from environments or relationships that reinforce it. If certain people consistently belittle you, it’s okay to set boundaries or even distance yourself. You deserve to be around people who see your worth and treat you with respect. Healing from shame often involves creating safer emotional spaces for yourself.
In her research, Dr. Brené Brown found that people who live with a strong sense of worthiness are those who embrace vulnerability. They are willing to be seen, imperfections and all. Each time you risk vulnerability –a heartfelt conversation, sharing your art, asking for help – you reclaim a bit of yourself from the grip of shame. Many people struggle with shame because they hold themselves to impossible standards. Perfectionism isn’t a sign of excellence, it’s a shield against the fear of not being good enough. Instead of striving for perfection, aim for growth. Allow yourself to be a work in progress. Celebrate small wins. Learn from mistakes without condemning yourself. n

And this is where eating seasonally really matters. Seasonal fruits and vegetables aren’t just tastier, they’re often more nutrient-dense as they’re fresher and haven’t been stored. Nutrients break down over time, so eating foods in season can benefit your body the most. And yes, this absolutely can show in your skin, energy and how your gut feels.
MY TOP FIVE SEASONAL
FRUIT & VEG FOR JULY & AUGUST:
Watermelon – Super hydrating and rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that supports skin health.
Cucumber – Cooling, anti-inflammatory and great raw or infused in water.
Tomatoes – Packed with vitamin C and perfect for collagen support and skin repair.
NUTRITION WITH KELI
Raspberries – High in fibre and antioxidants plus they are amazing for digestion and supporting a healthy gut microbiome.

Let’s be honest, when a holiday comes up, it’s not just about sorting flights and planning outfits (though I won’t lie that part is fun). It can also kick off that little internal dialogue: ‘Okay, it’s time to feel good in my skin’. And I totally get it. So many of us jump straight to restriction or last-minute crash eating plans. But here’s the thing – the real results that last and actually make you feel good, start with what you’re eating.
I’ve just come back from a girls’ trip to Ibiza, and as always, there was that bit of pre-holiday pressure to get in shape. But now that I understand how to support my
body properly with food, I did the opposite of what I used to. I increased my protein, mainly from fish and plants for easier digestion, added more complex carbs and upped my fibre. This, combined with training, helped me train harder, recover faster, build lean muscle and feel more energised in my workouts. But it wasn’t just about the gym results; I could see the difference in my skin and feel it in my digestion. That’s the joy of working with your body instead of against it.

Courgettes – Light, versatile and easy to digest. Ideal for grilling.
Water-rich foods like these, plus celery and herbal teas, not only hydrate you but help keep digestion smooth and reduce puffiness or bloating. I always think of them as internal skincare.
The bonus? Confidence. What I love most about eating this way is how it makes you feel. When your gut is thriving, everything upgrades. Your mood lifts, energy flows and inner confidence starts to shine. It’s not just about clearer skin or stronger training sessions, it’s how you carry yourself and show up. You don’t need restriction, you need nourishment. So, this summer, fuel yourself with intention and let your glow speak loud. n

SPARK OF INSPIRATION
An unexpected stayover in Milan, sparked a sustainable, luxury candle business based in the heart of the Ribble Valley
Acancelled flight from Milan unexpectedly led to the creation of a unique business for Carly and Jordan Young, a couple from Clitheroe. What began as an extended stayover turned into the inspiration for Bottle Wicks, a company specialising in luxury candles made from recycled bottles and cans. While the couple made the most of their extra time abroad, an unplanned detour sparked their life-changing venture.
WE FEEL VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE CREATED A BUSINESS THAT BRINGS TOGETHER OUR SKILLS, REFLECTS OUR VALUES AND HAS ALLOWED US TO CONNECT MORE DEEPLY WITH OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY
During their extended stay in Milan, Carly and Jordan took a day trip to Lake Como. There, they encountered a street vendor selling candles housed in upcycled bottles. Carly recalls: “We bought one of the candles and it really planted a seed of an idea.”
The scent, the presentation and the sustainable concept all left a lasting impression on the couple. Back in the UK, they began researching candle-making, focusing on high-quality, sustainable materials and techniques that aligned with their values.
The Youngs are passionate about the quality of their products as Carly explains: “You have to understand what’s in a candle –
the quality of the ingredients is extremely important. Paraffin-based wax can be quite toxic, so we only use 100 per cent natural soy wax. Our essential oils and fragrance oils are also of the highest quality.”
Both Jordan and Carly currently run Bottle Wicks alongside their full-time jobs and a busy family life. Carly, who works for a children’s charity, adds: “Although life can get hectic at times, from the start, Bottle Wicks has been a fantastic experience. We both feel very fortunate to have created a business that brings together our skills, reflects our values and has allowed us to connect more deeply with our local community.”
WE HAVE MET SOME AMAZING PEOPLE AND WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR ALL OF THEIR SUPPORT. THIS PARTNERSHIP HELPS TO REDUCE WASTE, WHILE ALSO SUPPORTING THE LOCAL ECONOMY
Jordan handles the technical aspects, cutting and sanding the bottles, while Carly is responsible for the scenting and pouring of the wax. Together, they create candles in a variety of vessels, from wine, gin and Champagne bottles, each with its own story and character. In addition to their traditional offerings, Bottle Wicks has introduced beer can ‘can-dles’ – durable and safe for outdoor use, making them ideal for summer gatherings.
The couple also collaborate with Ribble Valley-based hospitality businesses to collect empty bottles for repurposing. “Working with local businesses has been such a positive experience for us. We have met some truly amazing people and we are so grateful for all of their support. This partnership helps to reduce waste, while also supporting the local economy.”
Bottle Wicks offers a range of signature scents, including Lemongrass & Ginger, Plum & Rhubarb and Amber & Sandalwood, alongside a selection of seasonal fragrances.
Carly adds: “We also offer a bespoke service, where customers can bring their own bottles and create a personalised scented candle.”
This thoughtful, customisable option has become especially popular for those celebrating significant events or cherishing sentimental memories.
Operating Bottle Wicks is truly a family endeavour. Carly and Jordan’s two teenage

sons assist with various tasks, helping to keep the business running smoothly.
“We’re a very busy family and Bottle Wicks just wouldn’t work without the support of our friends and family,” says Carly. “Everyone helps out. My dad chips in, the boys lend a hand – it’s a real family affair.”
As Bottle Wicks continues to grow, the Youngs are expanding their product line to include a Wellbeing Essential Oil collection. Designed to enhance mood and overall wellbeing, the range focuses on three key elements: sleep, calm and mental clarity.

In addition to attending local fairs and farmers’ markets, the couple has also introduced candle-making workshops, where they share their passion for sustainable craftsmanship with the community. These interactive sessions give attendees the opportunity to develop hands-on skills while learning about the process of creating their own bespoke candle. n

RIBBLE RIDE
The 10th anniversary edition of the Ribble Valley Ride has taken the total the event has raised for local charities to more than £70,000 over the last decade.
Almost 300 cyclists from across the North West took part in the 2025 ride raising more than £7,500 which will be shared between Rosemere Cancer Foundation and Rotary Great Britain & Ireland.
Thanks to sponsors Ribble Cycles and Heidelberg Materials, this year’s event included a prize fund of £3,000.
The ride is organised almost entirely by volunteers from the Rotary Clubs of Clitheroe and Hyndburn.
Ride co-founder Bill Honeywell, said: “I’d like to say a huge thank-you to everyone who has taken part in the ride over the last decade and to our sponsors, supporters and volunteers who made it all possible.”

APPEAL FOR SUPPORT
Blackburn-based youth homeless charity, Nightsafe, is appealing for more local businesses to sign up to its patron scheme and has launched a new initiative to attract more cash donations.
A standing order option gives businesses the opportunity to donate £100 plus a month – a move that would help transform the lives of the young people that Nightsafe supports.
Prestige Beds became involved with Nightsafe when it answered an appeal for beds back in 2012. Their support continued with the company becoming the charity’s first financial patron, which along with other

SOAP BOX DERBY
Berry Lane in Longridge will be transformed once again on Sunday 14th September for the fourth running of the town’s annual Soap Box Derby.
Since it was founded, the fun-filled, family-oriented event has raised £57,000 for local charities from corporate sponsorship, kart fees and pitch fees.
Event organiser Gary Ward notes: “Local businesses have supported this initiative since day one. In the last three years thousands of pounds have been raised for many good causes.”
This year Raymond James, Ribble Valley and SPAR through its association with James Hall & Co. Ltd will be joint headline sponsors.
Raymond James’ Branch Principal Wayne Hayhurst said: “The Soap Box Derby gives Longridge the opportunity to demonstrate that it’s not just a great place to live but has a real sense of community and purpose.”
patrons, now ensures Nightsafe has the essential items needed to provide critical support to young people aged 16 to 25.
Along with Prestige Beds, Nightsafe has also welcomed other valued patrons, including Dunscar Farm, Dunbia Group, Ronset, WEPA Professional UK Ltd and Crown Paints to the scheme.
But cash donations are also needed as Nicola Roscoe, Operations Manager at Nightsafe, explains: “We are incredibly thankful to all our patrons for their support. The contributions and gifts in kind from these businesses will have a lasting impact on the lives of young people facing homelessness. Their generosity enables us to provide vital services such as emergency accommodation and mental health support.”
By becoming a patron, businesses can play an active role in ensuring that vulnerable young people are given the opportunities and resources to rebuild their lives.

LEGAL CHANGES FOR DONOR ANONYMITY
Current laws are no longer seen as adequate in reflecting the realities of modern-day fertility practices. Among the most notable proposals is the ending of anonymity for egg and sperm donors, explains family law solicitor Adrienne Baker of Forbes Solicitors

Fertility treatment and research in the UK are governed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), which has recently called for significant changes to the law surrounding donor anonymity.
Donor-conceived individuals are entitled to request information about their biological donors once they reach the age of 18. Since DNA testing, genetic matching services and social media have made it easier to obtain information, more people can track their biological roots outside of the official channels. The HFEA has been prompted to re-examine the law and consider proposals that allow
donor-conceived individuals to access identifying information from the moment of their birth, rather than waiting until they reach 18.
THE CURRENT LAW DOES NOT REFLECT THE RANGE OF FERTILITY TREATMENT ON OFFER TODAY. WE THINK THERE SHOULD BE CHANGES
“The current law does not reflect the range of fertility treatment on offer today. We think there should be changes that will ensure the law can continue to effectively protect individuals. Nowhere in this field has the pace and social technological change been more rapid than in the growing popularity of direct-to-consumer DNA testing,” comments Julia Chain, chair of the HFEA, who recognises that this is a significant departure from what the current regulation provides and admits that a gradual approach may be best. “We need to balance the new law with what is taking place in reality.”
A significant milestone was reached in April 2025 for the first cohort of donor-conceived individuals born after 1st April, 2005, who turned 18. These individuals are eligible to access identifying information about their biological donors. This policy change has led the HFEA to launch its #WhoIsMyDonor
campaign to raise awareness and encourage donors to ensure their contact information is up to date in the national registry.
While this is a significant shift in the rights of donor-conceived individuals, it also highlights the growing divide in the law. Individuals conceived before 2005 will still face restrictions on accessing donor information, creating an inconsistency between those born before and after the change.
The shift away from donor anonymity means that individuals who conceive via donation will have more clarity and access to information about their biological origins. However, it is crucial to understand that these changes might also bring legal and emotional complexities. As the law continues to evolve, it is strongly advised that anyone considering fertility treatment with donor gametes consult with a legal professional to better understand the full implications of these changes. Ensuring you are fully informed about the rights of donor-conceived children, the responsibilities of donors and any potential emotional or ethical concerns, is essential as you navigate this evolving field. n

for a period of a year. The successful applicant will work together with the abbey community in developing its story and interpreting this for new audiences. They will also support opportunities for abbey guests to engage with creative expression through quiet days, workshops and a retreat.
As well as providing space for the writer to develop their own work in a peaceful and inspiring setting, it is envisaged that the residency will lead to the production of a published work relating to the historic abbey, which today is a Centre for Christian Discipleship and Prayer and a retreat house, belonging to the Diocese of Blackburn in the Church of England. It is a place of spiritual refreshment and growth with regular daily prayers open to the general public.
VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME

Historic Whalley Abbey, which started out as a Cistercian monastery in the late 13th century, has recently launched a new volunteer programme along with other opportunities within the abbey community
Whalley Abbey is excited to announce the launch of a new programme for volunteers. With a variety of roles on offer, there will be something for all, who feel drawn towards spending some time at the abbey to serve in different ways.
Reverend Anna Walker, Director of Whalley Abbey, explains: “In the medieval times, lay brothers joined the monastery to work alongside the brothers to help in practical ways – following in that spirit, we would like to offer the possibility to engage in a
volunteer programme to make the vision of Whalley Abbey a reality in our day.”
Recruitment for volunteers will be ongoing with opportunities for:
• Event assistants
• Garden and grounds workers
• Handypersons
• Marketing assistants
Volunteers are an important part of Whalley Abbey and provide an invaluable contribution towards the community’s work and vision. The wider community will also benefit by the ongoing maintenance of the historic site. The abbey grounds draw a regular stream of visitors who are interested in the monastic history or come to enjoy the gardens.
If you have skills to offer that are not listed above, please do get in touch. Volunteers must be over 18 years.
As part of a valued group, volunteers can enjoy:
• Social gatherings
• Volunteers’ celebration dinner
• Annual residential working retreat
• Free quiet day every year
• Daily prayers in the chapel
• Meeting new friends
• Investing in their physical, spiritual and mental wellbeing
• Sharing skills or learning new ones
WRITER IN RESIDENCE
Whalley Abbey has also created a new opportunity for a writer in residence, living as a member of the resident community

RESIDENT COMMUNITY
In addition, there are a few opportunities for people to join the resident community at Whalley Abbey. This is a small group of people who live and work at the abbey and sustain the pattern of daily prayers in the chapel, which is open to all visitors. Members of the community work in various roles, making sure that there is a warm and hospitable welcome for guests, as well as in administrative tasks. They live in shared accommodation and get together regularly for meals, Bible study and social evenings.
A successful applicant would have a trial period leading up to a year’s stay and this could be extended upon mutual agreement. n

IN THE SADDLE
It’s officially summer and Chipping Pony Club members have certainly been busy, writes Megan Conlon
Firstly, Chipping Pony Club’s brilliant novice and junior mounted games teams recently represented the club at the Area Mounted Games competition. This is one of the biggest events in our mounted games calendar as it gives members the opportunity to show off their skills in furious races against other local Pony Club teams.
The end results reflected the time and effort put into training and the junior team managed to bring home second place rosettes, securing them a place at the prestigious Zones competition! Training, therefore, is continuing in the run up to this event and the team are sure to do us proud. We also did well in the Tack & Turnout competition wherein teams are judged on their presentation and appearance. Learning how to dress appropriately and to a high standard is very important to Chipping Pony Club and members again did us proud at the Area competition.

This was one of several key points discussed at our parents’ information evening. This was particularly useful for any parents or guardians new to Pony Club as they were taken through all the values, activities and expectations of the club.

This could then be put into practice at our all-day rally at Charity Farm. Brand new members got to meet some older ones and everyone had a go at a range of disciplines, including showjumping, flatwork and cross country. It was a lovely, positive day and really reflected what Pony Club is all about, having fun with your ponies and friends. There was expert instruction and every member went away having learned something to work on to be the best rider they can be. Outside the club’s events, some of our members have had major successes elsewhere. Amy Fishwick, for example,
competed at Bramham International Horse Trials’ Arena Eventing Competition and came first out of over 50 competitors. This was particularly impressive given a highly difficult course of showjumps and cross country fences which meant very few people went clear.

Amy has grown up through Chipping Pony Club and we were so excited to hear of this success. In addition to Amy’s win, Emma Simpson also had a great success at the Pony Club Search for a Star Your Horse Live qualifier, winning against some tough competition. We are so proud of our members and it is brilliant to see all the training and rallies pay off, even beyond Pony Club.
Looking ahead, we have lots more Area competitions coming up, including the Area Eventing and Area Showjumping. Members will be training hard in preparation for these, with the goal of qualifying for the National Championships. In addition to competitions, we also have our brilliant Pony Club camp coming up which is always a week packed full of fun. We do have some spaces open for members from other Pony Club branches, so get in touch if you want to come along! n

If you’d like to know more about Pony Club, in particular Chipping Branch, please contact the District Commissioner Joanne Conlon 01200 445143 or email: chipping@pcuk.org

FOUR FILLIES
Jason Fildes explains a groundbreaking idea for a new racing syndicate – Four Fillies
With the dust having settled on this year’s Royal Ascot, it’s given us an idea of what is required to have runners at the Royal meeting in 2026 and 2027.
It’s a fabulous meeting, the top of the sport –and the place where it is our ultimate aim to be successful. As such, we have chosen fillies because there are specific races for two-yearold and three-year-old fillies at Royal Ascot –and they are a better long-term investment than colts!
Having worked in racing for 12 years (five years as Managing Director at Haydock Park Racecourse and seven years running syndicates for Highclere) I can honestly say that I haven’t seen a proposal as exciting as this.
For £16k you can own a share in four beautifully bred racehorses – and we’re aiming for the top as the budget to buy each filly is £100k.
So, we’re spending £400k on four fillies and sending them to four of the top trainers in the country.
What’s more is that each of the trainers has agreed to invest their own money to own 25 per cent of the filly they are going to train. It gives them a vested interest, which can only be a bonus when it comes to buying and training their respective filly!
The plan is to race the four fillies for two years and then sell them all at the end of 2027 with all prize money won and sales proceeds divided up and paid to the Four Fillies syndicate share owners.
HERE ARE THE DETAILS:
It’s a partnership with four of the top flat trainers in the country:
• Karl Burke, Leyburn
• William Haggas, Newmarket
• Richard Hannon, Marlborough
• Charlie Johnston, Middleham
We are asking each of them to buy a yearling filly at the Autumn Sales this year with the plan to race them in 2026 and 2027.
Each trainer will have a budget of £100k to buy a suitable filly and all the trainers have agreed to retain 25 per cent of the filly they buy – the Four Fillies syndicate will own the other 75 per cent.
Each filly will race for two years – in 2026 as

a two-year-old and 2027 as a three-year-old –after which they will be sold at the Tattersalls Fillies and Mares Sale in December 2027. There are 40 shares available in Four Fillies at £16k each. Uniquely this buys you a stake in ALL four fillies, giving you an interest in four horses rather than just one. There are no further costs.
When all the shares are sold there will be a ballot in which each shareholder will be assigned to one of the four trainers.
In effect each shareholder will join the Burke, Haggas, Hannon or Johnston team (10 per team).
This entitles you to the certainty of an owner’s badge at the races each time the filly trained by that trainer runs. Any extra owner’s badges will be allocated by ballot and we will always endeavour to acquire as many owner’s badges as possible.
When the fillies are sold in December 2027 all proceeds will be divided equally between the shareholders.
Whichever of the four fillies has returned the most funds (prize money plus sale proceeds minus the original purchase price) that team will win a day out at York races for the 10 shareholders and the trainer, with a £5k betting kitty.
Four Fillies will be run on an ‘open book’ basis. Any surplus (actual to budget) will be returned to the shareholders at the end of the period.
We are, of course, planning to have plenty of stable visits over the course of the two years and a lot of fun at the racecourse when our fillies run!
Most importantly, it’s a chance to meet fellow owners and enjoy the thrill of being involved in top class racing with like-minded people.
The Four Fillies Racing syndicate is being launched in July 2025 with the aim being to sell all the shares by the middle of August. At this point the trainers will be given the funds to start looking for a suitable filly at the best bloodstock sales (August to October).
We will be able to follow their successful bids at the sales which will be very exciting! Please let me know ASAP if you would like to buy a share in Four Fillies – or if you would like any further information. Roll on Royal Ascot 2026! n

A CHIC BOUTIQUE IN THE COUNTRY
Catherine Robinson discovers the Ribble Valley’s newest country fashion boutique
Picture Zara Tindall strolling the Gatcombe estate, or Kate Middleton on the school run – and you’ve caught the vibe of NCS Equestrian Boutique, the new country clothing and equestrian store now open at Northcote Stud, just off the A59 at Langho.
The fashion world has known for years that you don’t have to be sitting on a horse to benefit from the flattering fit and classic lines of equestrian clothing – and NCS Equestrian Boutique knows it too. The country store is catering for the all-round stylish country lover: “We’ve something for every budget,” explains Emily Whiteside, the brains behind the new boutique: “We’re stocking high-end brands like Cavallieria Toscana and practical brands like RG.”
The Cavallieria Toscana range is especially eye-catching, featuring this season, a feminine baby blue tone. Each item is both

distinctively styled and subtly augmented with designer detail. The range includes hoodies with feature zips, fitted shirts with pleat details and a beautifully tailored jacket.

Other classy European brands currently in store are Covalliero, Pikeur and Athleisure. Millie Coultherd, Northcote’s manager, is especially impressed by Athleisure: “It’s very versatile, sporty leisure wear,” she explains. “People are buying it so they can look good walking the dog, but it’s equally suitable for riding in. You can dress it down to nip to the supermarket or dress it up to go out to a restaurant.”
NCS Equestrian Boutique has a dedicated fitting room, but Millie and Emily are always on hand with their extensive knowledge of the brands for advice on fit and styling: “For styles like these, you want the fit just right,” says Millie, “And it’s so much nicer to be able to feel the fabric before you buy.”

As well as its chic and classy clothing, NCS Equestrian Boutique stocks accessories from baseball caps to belts making it the perfect place to pick up an unusual gift for a country lover. In fact, you could even buy a gift for a horse at NCS Boutique as the shop also carries everyday equestrian essentials such as shampoo and saddle soap. There’s a rack of Premier Equine rugs, a rail of Eskadron headcollars, quality tack items from stirrups, to reins – and of course, horse treats.

The boutique’s tasteful wainscotting, equestrian art and antique counter make NCS Equestrian Boutique a place to linger in! NCS Equestrian Boutique is open 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday and whenever there is a competition running at Northcote Stud: “Even if that’s on a Sunday or in the evening,” adds Emily. n

Northcote Stud
The store has proved so successful that after only two months, Emily and Millie are already restocking: “And not just the ladies’ wear,” Emily adds. “We have a range of men’s equestrian wear and we’re increasing the children’s range too, as we move into autumn.”

YOUR PERFECT DAY AT THE COAST

Some family traditions happen by accident and this one started for me on a sunny Father’s Day a few years ago. We’d rented a beach hut at St Annes on a bit of a whim, just hoping for a nice day out. What we got was so much more and since then, it’s become one of our favourite summer rituals, one I now share with my children and grandson year after year.
There’s something really special about these huts. They’re not just a colourful backdrop for Instagram snaps – although they are very photogenic! These are thoughtfully equipped, homely little spaces where you can properly settle in and make a day of it. Inside, you’ll find electricity, heating, a fridge, kettle, microwave, crockery, cutlery, even comfy seating and a deck with a view. All you need to bring is food, drink and people you love spending time with.
On one of our recent visits, we made it a family affair, three generations together, enjoying sandwiches and seaside games, popping back into the hut when the breeze picked up or the sun got a little strong. My grandson ran in and out, spade in hand, giddy with freedom. The rest of us took turns brewing tea, sharing stories and soaking up the views.
These beach huts offer a unique mix of

nostalgia and comfort. They’re close to the pier and a short stroll to the local shops and eateries. There’s even a private ‘Show Hut’, which has its own garden and no neighbours –perfect if you want more privacy or if you’ve got younger kids or lots of beach gear (which we always do). You get access from 10am to

midnight, which makes for a relaxed day and if you’re planning a big gathering, they’ll help you book huts next to each other so the whole group can stay connected.
Another thing I love is how well-run everything is. You get a handy email the day
before with clear directions, parking tips and even suggestions on where to pick up the best fish and chips. The team on-site are lovely too, always happy to lend a hand or point you in the right direction.

Whether you’re from Preston, the Fylde or further afield like us in the Ribble Valley, I genuinely can’t recommend it enough. It’s a proper seaside escape without the hassle. We’ve celebrated birthdays here, marked Father’s Day with special moments and simply enjoyed quiet days with the sound of the waves and a mug of tea in hand. These huts are more than just a day at the beach they’re a place where memories are made. n

MAKE SURE YOUR HOME STAYS HOME
When a property is owned as either joint tenants or tenants in common, it transfers upon the death of an owner differently, explains Katy Shakeshaft, Wills and Probate specialist at Farleys Solicitors

JOINT TENANTS
In a joint tenancy, all owners hold an equal share of the property and the share of a deceased joint tenant automatically passes to the surviving joint tenant(s) due to the right of survivorship.
This means that, regardless of what is outlined in the deceased’s will, their share of the property doesn’t become part of their estate.
Instead, it transfers directly to the surviving joint tenant(s).
For example, if two people own a home as joint tenants and one passes away, the surviving owner automatically assumes full ownership of the property, regardless of what their will says.
TENANTS IN COMMON
In contrast, tenants in common each own a specified portion of the property, which can be equal or unequal. When one owner passes away, their share of the property becomes part of their estate and passes according to the terms of their will or, if there’s no will, according to the laws of intestate succession. There is no right of survivorship in this arrangement, so the deceased’s share does not automatically go to the surviving tenant. For instance, if two people own a home as tenants in common and one dies, their share will go to their heirs or beneficiaries as specified in their will.
Owning property as tenants in common can create complications, especially for the
surviving owner. If the deceased’s share passes to heirs who are not interested in allowing the surviving owner to remain in the property, they could force the surviving person to move out. This can be especially challenging if the surviving owner is a spouse or partner who still wishes to live in the home which they part own.
RIGHT OF RESIDENCE
To prevent such issues, it’s essential to include a right of residence in the will when the property is owned as tenants in common. A right of residence clause grants the surviving owner the legal right to remain in the property for a specified period or for their lifetime, even if they no longer hold an ownership share. This ensures the surviving owner can continue living in the home without the risk of being forced out by the new owners, who inherit the deceased’s share. n

LET’S TAKE A WALK…
Mark Sutcliffe takes us on an intriguing walk that combines the twin pillars of the Clitheroe skyline – the castle and parish church –with a taste of the pretty countryside accessible direct from the town centre

CLITHEROE SKYLINE
Distance 7km / 4.4 miles
Time: 2 hours
135m ascent
Toilets: None
Refreshments: Multiple options
Parking: Chester Avenue or council offices car parks
Start: Clitheroe Station
What3Words: ///gong.toolkit.legs
START
From the station, head right along Station Road. Clitheroe’s bustling market is just across the road through the archway.
Continue past the sculpture of ‘Dandy’ outside Booth’s and next to the mini roundabout, cross with care and head right, under the pedestrian bridge into the castle grounds. Under the bridge, turn left after the medieval Stock Well, climbing to reach the gravel track on the left leading up to the keep.
Climb the steps on the left to admire the magnificent views across the Ribble Valley to the Bowland Fells, then return to the terrace and descend via the driveway to the Castle Museum.
From the museum, descend left past the war memorial and through the main gate into the town centre. Head straight on to the main shopping area of Castle Street. At the library clocktower, turn right along Wellgate, where you’ll find another of the town’s medieval wells next to the fishmongers.
Continue to the junction and use the pelican crossing 50m to the right to get across the roundabout and continue past the supermarket. Go past the butchers, cross the main road with care and take the tarmac footpath on the left.
Follow the footpath round to the right, climbing steadily and crossing the road to continue up the track past a derelict farmhouse. Continue along the track and take the footpath through the gate on the left. Follow the path along the edge of the field.
At the bottom of the field, head right across the stream and through the gate, descending to reach the road. Head right along the pavement past the Pit Stop Cafe to the T-junction. Cross the road with care and continue straight ahead on the narrow lane, crossing the stream. Follow the lane as it twists and turns past the terraces and up to the old Bobbin Mill. Keep left to join the footpath heading into the fields.
Continue over the footbridge and past the barn and through two gates. At the end of the avenue of beech trees, head left over the brook and follow the grassy path up the edge of the field to the gate. Keep left on the path heading alongside the wall and right at the marker post, climbing steadily through the limestone grassland and on to the road. Cross with care and climb the steps on the far side, continuing past Salthill barn then right down the track between the houses. Cross the road and head through a gate into Clitheroe Cricket Club, continuing anticlockwise around the pitch and left before reaching the nets. Follow the path around the back of the houses, over the footbridge onto Pimlico Road.
Continue along Pimlico Road to the roundabout and cross with care, heading up Church Brow. On the right, at the Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene, turn right into the gardens and descend the steps zigzagging down to Brennand Street. At the bottom of Brennand Street, head right then double back left to reach the interchange. n

GOOD READ

This summer pack your sunhat, sunglasses and one of these brilliant reads, because wherever you go, a book can take you further
As summer unfurls and the scent of suncream and barbecues fill the air, there’s no better companion than a good book. Whether you’re poolside with a spritzer, in a hammock with the breeze in your hair or snuggled up after a long day exploring cobbled towns abroad, a well-chosen read adds that perfect touch of escapism to your holiday.
Here are three page-turners – for men, women and children that promise to inspire, intrigue and ignite the imagination.

FOR HIM: THE LAST DANCE Mark Billingham
Twisty, gritty and darkly funny, a classic British crime with a fresh new lead.
Mark Billingham, master of British crime fiction, introduces a brilliant new detective in The Last Dance. DI Declan Miller is not your typical copper – he’s sharp, sardonic and still reeling from personal tragedy. But beneath the wisecracks and ballroom dancing obsession lies a tenacious investigator who won’t let a double murder in Blackpool go unanswered.
This is the start of a new series, but with all the pace and polish of a seasoned thriller. Billingham gives us a gritty setting, razor-sharp dialogue and a mystery that keeps you guessing – just the right mix of tension and entertainment for a holiday page-turner.
Bring it to: Your sunlounger or balcony with a cold beer - you’ll be hooked in a chapter.

FOR HER: THE RACHEL INCIDENT
Caroline O’Donoghue
Smart, heartfelt and utterly immersive.
Caroline O’Donoghue’s sparkling novel is set in Cork in the early 2000s – a tale of friendship, secrets and the ache of growing up. Rachel, a college student with a literary crush and a messy love life, finds herself entangled in a series of events that blur the lines between affection and ambition. It’s witty, gorgeously written and filled with moments that feel both nostalgic and fresh.
O’Donoghue writes with an effortless intimacy that invites the reader into the heart of her characters. The novel captures that unique moment of being on the brink of adulthood, when everything feels like it might fall apart – or come beautifully together.
Bring it to: A quiet terrace with a view and a chilled glass of rosé.

FOR THE LITTLE ONES: THE SWIFTS Beth Lincoln
An adventure with mischief, mystery and a message.
Children aged eight to 12 will adore The Swifts, a wildly inventive debut that’s brimming with gothic charm and fastpaced fun. The story follows Shenanigan Swift, who is determined to uncover a family secret during a chaotic reunion in their crumbling ancestral home.
It’s Agatha Christie meets Lemony Snicket, with clever wordplay, quirky characters and themes of identity and belonging.
Lincoln’s writing respects the intelligence of young readers while delivering a satisfying and inclusive adventure. Parents might even sneak a few chapters for themselves.
Bring it to: Bedtime under the stars, or a shady spot after sandcastle-building.
Reading on holiday isn’t just a pastime – it’s an experience. Books allow us to travel further, deeper and stranger than any flight or ferry. They offer solace in quiet moments, stimulation on lazy afternoons and stories that linger long after the sunburn fades. In a world dominated by screens and scrolling, giving yourself or your family the gift of a good book is a small act of wonder.

FORGING AHEAD
Ribble Valley blacksmiths Bill Carter and Oscar Duck talk about their recent work replacing handcrafted components on more than 40 former gas lights in historic Manchester Town Hall
Acollaboration involving two talented, local craftsmen has resulted in a number of impressive projects for them, working on some of the region’s most prestigious, historic buildings.
Blacksmiths Bill Carter and Oscar Duck have recently completed work on elaborate mid-19th century lighting in Manchester Town Hall, which is currently undergoing a multi-million, pound refurbishment.
“It’s a massive project,” explains Bill. “The light fittings, featuring decorative dragon’s heads, were Victorian and
originally made for gas. But, in the 1920s they were adapted for electric. Back then, whoever modified them had no respect for the original workmanship as there were

numerous missing and broken parts.
“One of the fittings featured really small scrolls and delicate leaves just a few millimetres thick, which had been bent back – there were around 40 of them. As blacksmiths you have to have a specific mindset as you can be working on something really small and delicate like this or forging on an industrial scale.
WE RECENTLY TOOK ONE OF THE CHAIRS TO THE TRIG POINT AT THE TOP OF PENDLE HILL FOR A PHOTOSHOOT – THAT WAS QUITE A CHALLENGE!
“For the Manchester Town Hall fittings there was no modern way of replicating any of the missing components so we did

it exactly the way it would have been done back in the mid-1800s.”
Having worked on the Manchester project for the best part of a year, Bill and Oscar were among the many and varied traditional artisan craftsmen to be invited to an exhibition in the city’s Central Library featuring the work they had carried out on the Town Hall.
“It was good to meet everyone. There were stonemasons, clock refurbishers, slate miners, stained glass makers and textile experts,” adds Bill, who formerly worked from Trapp Forge at Simonstone.
“Back in the 80s or 90s Trapp Forge made chandeliers for Manchester Town Hall and they are still there in the corridors. They were replicas, influenced by some that were made in the 1800s.”
Oscar started blacksmithing when he

was just 13 after watching a Youtube video, making his own charcoal and forge in the garden of the family home.
For a Duke of Edinburgh project, he asked Bill to judge a piece of work he had forged: “I was pretty impressed,” recalls Bill, who invited a 15-year-old Oscar to work and learn alongside him.
In 2019 and recovering from a serious heart operation, Bill sold Trapp Forge and Oscar started up his own business. For a time, Bill worked from a workshop in Ribchester and at an industrial forge making components for steam trains, but fate brought the two working back together: “We did a couple of big jobs together – one was replicating the original Georgian gates at Emmott Hall,” says Oscar.
After the duo completed the work on the Grade II listed country house, the pair set up as Carter and Duck Blacksmiths and three years ago moved to their workshop at Hobbit Hill just outside Hurst Green in the heart of the Ribble Valley countryside. The forge has been kept busy ever since with various interesting and impressive commercial and private projects – designing them from conception to completion. They have also launched a new brand of traditional garden furniture Anvil & Moor, inspired by the signature iron benches Bill has been making for the past 20 years: “I had spotted a bench on a footpath on the east side of Ullswater in the Lake District – it was really well designed, so I used this as inspiration for a bench of my own,” he recalls.
Today the two blacksmiths have a classic collection of chairs, benches and accessories under the Anvil & Moor banner including
the Bowland, the Castlefield and the Lakeland – all based on Bill’s original.
“We recently took one of the chairs to the trig point at the top of Pendle Hill for a photoshoot – that was quite a challenge!” admit the duo, who also run blacksmithing workshops once a month at their forge.

THERE WAS NO MODERN WAY OF REPLICATING ANY OF THE MISSING COMPONENTS SO WE DID IT EXACTLY THE WAY IT WOULD HAVE BEEN DONE BACK IN THE MID-1800s
“We give demonstrations at the Lancashire and Yorkshire shows and when people watch us work, they think blacksmithing is easy and they always want to have a go so that’s what gave us the idea for the workshops.
“While it’s not quite as easy as it looks, it’s an enjoyable and satisfying experience.” n

RELAX, RECONNECT & ENJOY
In the heart of the Ribble Valley, where gently rolling hills meet timeless charm, a new opportunity for modern countryside living has quietly taken shape
Goosnargh Lodge Park, tucked away just outside the historic village of Goosnargh, is a place where thoughtful design, rural tranquility and lifestyle aspirations all come together. Following the launch of their brand-new website in April, now is the perfect time to introduce this exceptional destination to readers of Live Ribble Valley.
Once home to a golf course that opened in 2005, the site remained dormant during
the uncertainty of the pandemic. In 2021, a new chapter began when the land was acquired with a vision to repurpose its potential. The result is something that feels both considered and connected to its surroundings. Goosnargh Lodge Park has been developed with meticulous care, balancing quality infrastructure and bespoke design while keeping the natural beauty of the landscape at the heart of the project. From the outset, the aim was clear –

to create a timeless sanctuary where owners can relax, reconnect and enjoy the peace and space that the countryside offers.
Central to the appeal of the park are the lodges themselves. Each one is hand-built to exacting standards and created in partnership with leading manufacturers to ensure every detail is just right. No two plots are the same, and this variety is matched by a flexibility that appeals to a broad and growing audience. These lodges are ideal for retirees seeking a manageable, stress-free lifestyle without compromising on quality. They also suit those looking to gain a foothold in this stunning part of the world, surrounded by green space and some of the county’s finest scenery.

EACH LODGE IS HAND-BUILT TO EXACTING STANDARDS AND CREATED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LEADING MANUFACTURERS
The lodges are contemporary, constructed in line with British Building Standards (BBS) ensuring they are energy-efficient, with large picture windows and materials chosen to complement the natural palette of the park. The standard of finish throughout reflects an ambition to offer something above and beyond the norm. These are not holiday cabins or hastily built prefabs – they are stylish, comfortable lodges designed to last and adapt to changing needs.
There is a 52-week holiday licence, which offers the freedom to visit and enjoy the lodge

throughout the year, without the restrictions that can often apply in more seasonal developments. Whether it becomes a weekend escape, a longer-term base or a semi-permanent retreat, the park’s flexible arrangements are designed with modern life in mind.
Beyond the lodges themselves, the infrastructure of the park has been developed with equal attention to detail. From roadways and landscaping to individual plot services and planting schemes, every decision reflects a commitment to quality and care. There’s a sense of spaciousness and privacy, yet also a natural flow and cohesion across the site. The result is a park that feels settled, not sterile – a living, breathing part of the landscape that respects its surroundings and invites nature in.
Sustainability plays a central role in the development too. All exterior cladding on the lodges is made from 100 per cent recycled materials. Solar panels are in the pipeline to further reduce the park’s environmental footprint. Electric vehicle charging points are being introduced to meet future demand and the landscaping strategy includes wildflower planting to support biodiversity. These aren’t token gestures – they’re part of

a wider ethos that aims to tread lightly and protect the beauty of the countryside for years to come.

GOOSNARGH LODGE PARK OFFERS NOT JUST A CHANGE OF SCENERY, BUT A CHANGE OF PACE
The lifestyle on offer here is one that many aspire to but few achieve. Morning walks through peaceful lanes, afternoons spent exploring local pubs such as the charming Ye Horns Inn, alternatively, enjoy a leisurely stroll to neighbouring Mrs Kirkham’s Farm Shop and spend evenings gazing out at open skies – this is a place to relax and breathe again. For many, it’s a way of escaping the noise and pressures of urban life while

staying within easy reach of friends, family and amenities. With excellent local produce, a strong sense of community and access to some of Lancashire’s most scenic routes, Goosnargh Lodge Park offers not just a change of scenery, but a change of pace.
There’s something quietly compelling about this project. It’s not about making noise or grand statements. It’s about thoughtful design, long-term vision and getting the fundamentals right. It speaks to people who value quality and independence, who want somewhere they can truly call their own without compromise. The team behind the park are local, passionate and hands-on. They’re not part of a faceless national chain. They’re here, on site, involved – and that shows in every aspect of what’s been built so far.
Of course, the best way to understand what makes Goosnargh Lodge Park special is to experience it for yourself. A visit brings everything into focus – the space, the views, the finishes, the calm. Later this summer, the team will be hosting an open day to showcase the lodges and share the vision with prospective buyers and curious locals alike. It’s a perfect opportunity to explore what could be a life-changing move.
In the meantime, the website offers plenty of useful information and a glimpse into what’s already creating a buzz among early visitors. With a strong start to initial sales and enquiries growing each week, it’s clear that Goosnargh Lodge Park is striking a chord. n
To arrange a private tour or learn more, visit the website or call 01772 211211. This could be the start of something very special.

HOSTING WITH HEART
Tucked within the grounds of Zoe Whitworth’s Ribble Valley home, Bailey Hut is a handcrafted shepherd’s hut designed to offer guests a truly memorable stay. Photography: Kirsten Platt
In the heart of the Ribble Valley, visitors will find an unexpected blend of rustic charm and refined hospitality in a unique retreat crafted with care – Bailey Hut. Created by host Zoe Whitworth, this bespoke shepherd’s hut offers a one-of-a-kind experience for travellers seeking comfort, creativity and connection to the local landscape.
Zoe moved to the Ribble Valley in 2022, drawn back by a strong personal connection. “My parents moved here nearly 30 years ago,” she explains. “When I had my first son, we visited often. It always felt like coming home.”
Once she found her perfect property, the idea for Bailey Hut began to take shape.
This was never going to be a standard holiday rental. As a former stay-at-home mum of three with a passion for hosting, Zoe’s vision was to create a space that reflected her

personality, values and artistic flair.
“I wanted it to feel like an extension of my home,” she says. “Something special, where people feel looked after.”
Everything inside Bailey Hut has been thoughtfully chosen or handcrafted. From reclaimed barn wood siding, imported from the US, to locally made window blinds and pottery. The design showcases Zoe’s eye for detail and dedication to quality.
I WANTED IT TO FEEL LIKE AN EXTENSION OF MY HOME. SOMETHING SPECIAL,
WHERE PEOPLE FEEL LOOKED AFTER
Zoe adds: “My BA Hons in art and design has been incredibly valuable in shaping the vision for what I was trying to create.”
Notable features include a quirky headboard and rainfall shower made from wriggly tin, granite countertops in the kitchen and bathroom and a charming, reclaimed sink. “Guests often comment on the attention to detail,” Zoe says. “They say it feels luxurious but personal, and that means everything to me.”
Zoe’s talent for hospitality goes beyond
joy to create these little touches that guests remember.”
For those wanting to take a piece of the experience home, the on-site Honesty Shop offers the locally commissioned crockery that features in the hut, homemade jams, preserves and more. It also doubles as a bike store and drying room, complete with heated racks, boot storage, an EV charger and even an outside tap for muddy adventures.
Food and drink are quite literally on the doorstep, with Bailey Hut set within walking distance of acclaimed local favourites the Three Fishes, the Aspinall Arms and Mitton Hall – ideal for a relaxed lunch, romantic dinner or celebratory drinks.
Whether it’s walkers, wedding guests, right up to the bride and groom themselves, food lovers or festival-goers, Bailey Hut is perfectly placed and lovingly prepared, to welcome them all. n

ENJOY THE MAGIC
One of Clitheroe’s longest established cafés is mixing heritage with bold new flavours as it launches a summer of lively events, delicious dishes and artisan coffee. Photography: Kirsten Platt

There’s something deeply comforting about stepping through the doors of Apricot Meringue in Clitheroe. The clink of china, the tempting scent of baking and the smile that greets you from behind the counter make this lovely café feel like home – only with much better cake!
Owned and run by the ever-enthusiastic
Anita Orchard, Apricot Meringue has been at the heart of King Street’s café culture for four decades.
“We’ve always been about proper food and proper service,” says Anita, who is also President of Clitheroe Chamber of Trade. “We do everything in-house here – cakes, scones and pies – all made from scratch. There’s a tradition in that but there’s also a lot of pride.”
Step inside and it’s all crisp tablecloths
and silver service standards – a nod to a slower, more elegant time. But don’t be fooled. While the ethos remains reassuringly old-school, Anita is no stranger to very modern tastes.

THE CAFÉ IS GEARING UP FOR A BUSTLING SUMMER SEASON WHICH WILL SEE THE LAUNCH OF SUNDAY EVENTS WITH ENTERTAINMENT AND SPECIALIST MARKETS
Just recently the café has introduced its own blend of artisan coffee. Created in partnership with local roasters Exchange Coffee, Apricot Meringue Blend ground coffee boasts sweet vanilla tones and notes
of soft chocolate caramel, crafted from beans sourced from El Salvador, Brazil and India.
“Tastes have really changed, especially in coffee,” Anita explains. “People have become real connoisseurs – while a flat white is still popular, we’ve also now launched a range of in-house iced coffees and flavoured coffees, alongside a cold brew, fizzy flavoured coffee. It’s very much a London trend that we’ve brought to Clitheroe!”

But it’s not just coffee that’s causing a stir. Anita is passionate about supporting local businesses and sourcing produce locally for delicious home-cooked hearty meals that keep customers coming back. Apricot Meringue has also introduced its own homemade jam and marmalade all available to take away.
Afternoon teas remain a signature draw –think dainty sandwiches, just-baked scones and generous slices of Victoria sponge. There’s a quiet confidence in everything Apricot Meringue does – just incredibly good food made with care and served from the heart.
At the moment the café is gearing up for a bustling summer season which will see the launch of Sunday events with entertainment and specialist markets. So, watch out on social media for these special dates!
Whether you’re popping in for a coffee or settling in for a full afternoon tea experience, Apricot Meringue offers the kind of welcome – and the kind of flavour – you won’t forget soon. n

Tucked beside the gentle flow of the River Ribble on the edge of Clitheroe, the Edisford Bridge country pub continues to shine as a local treasure, especially in the summer months, writes Tedd Walmsley
With its beautiful riverside setting, spacious outdoor seating and easy access with plenty of parking, the Edisford Bridge is a perfect spot to soak up the sunshine with friends, family or even your four-legged companions.

The main menu remains true to its roots
with comforting pub classics, generous portions and locally sourced ingredients. From towering burgers and crispy beerbattered fish to the ever-popular steak and chips and homemade pies, there’s something to suit every appetite. A new summer cocktail menu brings a fresh twist, with chilled favourites and classic mixes served in the garden or inside the cosy pub. It’s a simple addition that brings a laid-back holiday feel, perfect for long afternoons by the river.
Tuesday evenings continue to offer something a little different, thanks to a collaboration with Amico Mio, the muchloved Whalley-based Italian restaurant.
Their authentic pizza van sets up outside, offering freshly baked wood-fired pizzas that guests are welcome to bring inside and enjoy with a pint or glass of wine. It’s a great example of local businesses working together and creating something special.

The pub is also growing in popularity as a venue for private events, with its riverside location and relaxed atmosphere providing a unique setting for birthdays and informal celebrations.
With its welcoming atmosphere, honest food and riverside charm, the Edisford Bridge country pub is a true gem for both Ribble Valley residents and visitors alike. It’s the kind of place that reminds you just how good local can be, especially in the summer. n

SEE YOU TOMORROW MACHU PICCHU
Harmony Voyages travel advisor Emma, shares her first-hand experience of a carefully planned journey through Peru’s diverse landscapes, rich culture and iconic landmarks
Peru has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember.
The mystery of Machu Picchu, the ‘Lost City of the Incas’, has always fascinated me. Our trip delivered jungle adventures, ancient wonders, breathtaking scenery and vibrant cities.
We began in the lush, humid Peruvian Amazon, staying in a river-view lodge that felt a world away from everyday life. Waking at 5am might not sound appealing, but it was utterly worth it. As we floated down the Amazon River to Tambopata National Park the sounds of wildlife waking up surrounded us. We spotted colourful macaws, parakeets, caiman and several monkey species. It was wild, humid and completely immersive.

Next stop the Sacred Valley. We made our base in Ollantaytambo, a traditional Andean town rich with Incan history. The lively central square gave us a real taste of local culture.
From there, we took the train to Aguas Calientes, a bustling hub at the foot of Machu Picchu. It was alive with markets and the energy of travellers. Then came the big moment – Machu Picchu.

Words fail me. I felt emotional, awed and entirely present in that space. Our two-and-ahalf hour visit wasn’t nearly enough. I could’ve wandered the ancient terraces for hours. As we left, our guide shared a local saying, ‘See you tomorrow, Machu Picchu’ and I completely understand why.
We finished with a tranquil lunch at Café Inkaterra, a charming thatched-roof restaurant tucked away from the town. The setting, overlooking the river, was as memorable as the food.
Then onto Cusco, I fell in love with
the city’s blend of Incan heritage and colonial charm. We explored Coricancha, Saqsaywaman and wandered the endless cobbled streets. Our hotel had an original Incan entrance, which added a touch of living history to our stay.
Next came the Titicaca train, a 10-hour luxury journey through the Andes. With silver service, live Andean music and panoramic views, it was an experience in itself. At 4,319m, La Raya Pass was the highest point I’ve ever stood on land.
On Lake Titicaca, we visited the floating Uros Islands and explored Taquile Island, home to 2,000 residents living in traditional ways, where views over the lake from 4,050m were unforgettable.

Finally, we visited Lima, with its romantic Barranco district, ancient Huacas and lively historic centre, providing the ideal end to our journey.
Peru will stay with me forever. It didn’t just meet my hopes, it left a mark on my heart.
See you tomorrow, Machu Picchu.
If you’re feeling inspired to experience the magic of Peru for yourself, call into Harmony Voyages, Emma will be there to help you plan your perfect adventure. n

WHERE SUMMER FEELS ITALIAN
With alfresco dining in the summer sunshine, Gio’s Deli combines delicious Italian food with an unrivalled atmosphere and ambience, writes Tedd Walmsley
There’s something undeniably special happening on New Market Street.
While Clitheroe’s café culture is already a much-loved part of the town’s charm, one place continues to set itself apart. Unapologetically different, Gio’s Deli is refreshingly authentic and now, with the unveiling of its stunning new alfresco dining area, even more irresistible.
This isn’t the latest arrival on Clitheroe’s café scene, far from it. It’s a much-loved fixture that continues to evolve, growing not only in popularity but in purpose. And, with the addition of alfresco dining, it feels more like

a little Italian escape than ever before.
At the heart of it all is Joseph Lanzante, a man whose passion for hospitality is as strong as his espresso. “It’s not just about food, it’s about creating a feeling, a moment, a little slice of Italy right here in Clitheroe,” he says, smiling as he watches another cappuccino head out to a sun-drenched table beneath the awning.
IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT FOOD, IT’S ABOUT CREATING A FEELING, A MOMENT, A LITTLE SLICE OF ITALY RIGHT HERE IN CLITHEROE
And it’s working. The new outdoor space is elegant yet relaxed, a tucked-away spot where friends gather, wine flows and the scent of fresh focaccia mingles with summer air. Stylish and sociable, it brings a whole new dimension to the local dining scene.
Then there’s the food – and oh, what food! Breakfast is a thing of beauty – flaky, buttery pastries, focaccia filled with pancetta and soft egg and rich Italian coffee made exactly as it should be. The lunchtime offering is wide and wonderfully indulgent, from stacked

porchetta paninis and creamy burrata with roasted veg, to a rotating pasta special that showcases Joseph’s love for traditional, bold Italian flavours.
What makes it all sing is the quality of the ingredients. “If it doesn’t taste right, it doesn’t go on the menu,” Joseph explains. Many of the deli’s key products are sourced directly from Italy, keeping the flavours true and the experience genuinely immersive.

And this summer, things don’t stop at lunch. Keep an eye on Instagram and Facebook for details of evening events, wine tastings and more, perfect for making the most of those long Ribble Valley nights.
In a town where cafés are plenty, this is something different. Real passion, real flavour and a real sense of place. n

This collective tribute helped the children appreciate both the joy of victory and the bittersweet memories of those who endured loss and hardship during the war.

THE FIRST CHAPTER…
For a joyful start to lifelong learning, youngsters flourish at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep
Set in the heart of Stonyhurst’s spectacular 1,000-acre estate is St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep – a place where childhood is cherished, curiosity is nurtured and young minds are inspired. For families seeking a warm, values-led foundation to early education, the Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep offers a joyful and enriching experience that shapes young confident learners and adventurous, thoughtful individuals.
At Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep, which welcomes children from age three to seven, the ethos is rooted in the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis – care for the whole person – the Pre-Prep champions each child’s unique personality and learning journey. Whether they are a budding artist, an eager reader, a future scientist or natural explorer, the dedicated teaching team ensures every pupil is seen, celebrated and supported.
The environment here is as inspirational as the ethos. Light-filled classrooms, vibrant learning spaces and open-plan areas invite exploration, creativity and collaboration.

DAILY OUTDOOR PLAY AND WOODLAND CLASSROOM SESSIONS OFFER ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR FRESH AIR, DISCOVERY AND HANDS-ON LEARNING
Outside, the experiences expand –daily outdoor play and woodland classroom sessions offer endless opportunities for
fresh air, discovery and hands-on learning, from tending vegetables in the Mission Garden to nature trails: “The outdoor space is an extension of the classroom,” explains Charina Hartley, Early Years Foundation Stage Co-ordinator, who adds: “Children can play in the mud kitchen and in the sandpit plus they can take part in den-building –we have a whole range of activities that are made relevant to academic learning.”
Strong academic foundations in Pre-Prep are created through a rich curriculum that includes phonics, early reading, numeracy, French and technology, all delivered in engaging, age-appropriate ways. Small class sizes mean teachers truly get to know each child, adapting their approach to suit individual needs. The result is a learning environment where children feel safe, brave, inquisitive and develop a lifelong love of learning.
But what truly sets Pre-Prep apart is the way it blends strong academic and pastoral care with an exceptional enrichment programme. Children can try judo, gymnastics, tennis or yoga, develop rhythm and expression through musical theatre, get involved in the regular concerts and the annual nativity or get creative with craft

sessions. Music and drama are a particular strength, with specialist teachers offering everything from violin, piano and drum lessons to drama – all designed to build confidence from an early age.

The children also enjoy extraordinary access to the wider Stonyhurst campus. From weekly swimming lessons in the indoor pool to visits to the College Museum, the opportunities are remarkable. Where else can a four-year-old come face to face with the extraordinary collection of pioneer explorer Charles Waterton’s – widely regarded as an inspiration to David Attenborough – or learn about history through fossilised dinosaur poo? These experiences spark awe, build knowledge and connect children with the richness of learning in the world around them.
Spiritual formation is gently woven into daily life, reflecting the school’s Catholic identity. Through prayer, reflection and class worship, children are encouraged to grow in kindness, empathy and gratitude. The Jesuit Profile, which guides children to be loving, hopeful and attentive, forms the foundations for character development and helps young minds in exploring the meaning of faith: “Even the youngest children are encouraged to reflect on their day with a focus on gratitude, generosity and thankfulness,” says head of Pre-Prep Sarah Gibson, who adds that the

Stonyhurst motto ‘Quant je puis’ or ‘As much as I can’ is just as relevant to the children in Pre-Prep: “It’s an achievable, living motto and we have high expectations of our children, who aim to accomplish as much as they can in every activity.”
One of the greatest strengths of Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep is its strong sense of family. Warm, trusting relationships between staff, children and parents create a nurturing community where each child feels secure, supported and truly known. Teachers work in close partnership with families, fostering a spirit of collaboration through regular communication, progress updates, assessments and thoughtful personalised care.

THE FACILITIES ARE IMPRESSIVE, BUT IT IS THE PEOPLE – THEIR SHARED PURPOSE AND THE JOY THEY RADIATE – THAT TRULY MAKE THIS PLACE SO WARM AND WELCOMING
As children move through Pre-Prep and prepare to step up into Year 3 at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall Prep School, the transition feels natural and exciting. Familiar faces, familiar spaces and consistent routines ensure continuity and confidence.
Now marking over 20 years since its opening in 2004, Pre-Prep is a well-established and highly regarded entry point to one of the UK’s leading Catholic independent schools. Recent refurbishments have introduced thoughtfully enhanced resources and bright, adaptable learning spaces to an already vibrant setting.

The facilities are impressive, but it is the people – their shared purpose and the joy they radiate – that truly make this place so warm and welcoming.
For families exploring independent education, Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep offers more than a start – it offers a springboard into a lifelong journey of wonder, growth and discovery. n

EXTRAORDINARY BEGINNINGS

The magic of Prep at Westholme – where confident futures are shaped
Imagine a place where children as young as four spend their school days immersed in music, stories, science and adventure. A place where the Principal reads to the youngest pupils each week and where the journey from Reception to Sixth Form is seamless across one inspiring educational setting.
This is Westholme Prep – a place where extraordinary beginnings shape confident futures.
Nestled in the same rural Lancashire grounds as the Senior School and Sixth Form, Westholme Prep offers children aged four to 11 a unique sense of continuity and belonging.
FROM THEIR
EARLIEST DAYS WITH US, CHILDREN ARE NURTURED AND CHALLENGEDINTELLECTUALLY, EMOTIONALLY AND CREATIVELY
“Our Prep community wholeheartedly empowers Westholme’s youngest pupils,” says Carla Hornby, Head of Prep. “From their earliest days with us, children are nurtured and challenged – intellectually, emotionally and creatively. They blossom into articulate, confident and impressive young people.”
Teachers at Westholme Prep build strong, respectful relationships with pupils, offering warm, consistent guidance that helps children thrive. This mutual trust means pupils
feel secure and confident to embrace every opportunity.
“Westholme is like a family to me. I’ve been here since I was three years old. The teachers are friendly and welcoming and there are lots of opportunities”, says Rahmeen, in Year 5. “It’s a really fun place to be. I am excited to go to school every day to learn something new.”

And exciting events this term have shown these values in action: “Our recent Prep sleepover was embraced by nearly every child in Year 2 and 3 which speaks volumes about the confidence and security our pupils feel,” says Judith Dixon, Deputy Head of Prep. “It also reflects the high level of trust parents place in us – we don’t take that lightly.”
Talking about her experience of the Prep sleepover, Eliza from Year 2, said: “I liked making my teddy and she slept with me and took most of my sleeping bag! I have never had a sleepover without my family and it was a really exciting and different experience.”
From a heartwarming grandparents’
tea party, to Saturday morning experience sessions designed to embrace new families, the sense of belonging and inclusion runs through the very fabric of Westholme Prep.
Academic excellence begins early at Westholme. A bespoke curriculum, enriched by subject-specialist teachers from the outset in Sport, Drama, Languages, Music and Technology, inspires imaginative, independent thinkers.
“It’s so good to be able to start young doing what you enjoy like acting and singing,” says Arabella in Year 5. “You can take exams in things you love and perform in the theatre showing your personality.”
Pupils begin LAMDA spoken poetry exams from Reception and learn a variety of instruments, starting with the ocarina in Year 2. The school orchestra rehearses

weekly and children proudly perform and share achievements in assemblies.
“It’s amazing to be part of the orchestra and have the opportunity to practise every week and build up to perform on the Croston Theatre stage,” says Mustafa in Year 5. “I play the glockenspiel and the piano and I enjoy it very much.”
The unique opportunities that form part of daily life at Westholme Prep create memories that will be talked about for a lifetime.
Mrs Hornby explains: “Our children learn through experience. It could be a trip to France for Year 4-6, a visit to hear the Philharmonic Orchestra for our younger pupils to show their knowledge of musical instruments, or even a Q&A with astronaut Tim Peake. Every moment is an opportunity to spark curiosity. These experiences give our pupils conversation starters and wider knowledge of the world – they expose them to more of life beyond the classroom.”
A typical day at Westholme Prep involves the likes of Paralympian and former Westholmian Mark Tompsett, joining pupils for a swimming gala – and diving in himself to race against Year 6.
“I really enjoyed the experience,” says Thomas in Year 6. “It was very exciting because I swam in the same pool as a Paralympian and he inspired me because I might like to

be a swimmer when I am older.”
Charlotte from Year 6 echoed his thoughts, saying: “It was really nerve-wracking getting on the blocks to swim my 50-metre butterfly race, but I really enjoyed it – even if he did beat us!”
THESE EXPERIENCES GIVE OUR PUPILS WIDER KNOWLEDGE OF THE WORLD – THEY EXPOSE THEM TO MORE OF LIFE BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
From chess club to enhance cognitive functions like memory, critical thinking and problem solving and famous author visits, entrepreneurial projects and musical productions like the recent Lion King-inspired ‘Circle of Life’, pupils are encouraged to throw themselves into their talents and passions through a co-curricular programme which changes seasonally.
“From the moment our families arrive, they become part of a warm and vibrant school community,” says Mrs Hornby. Taster days for pupils joining mid-year are carefully designed where children are paired with a ‘buddy’ whose passions and interests match their own.
Long-standing traditions sit comfortably

alongside fresh ideas, thanks to an exceptional team of experienced and forward-thinking staff. Every pupil is known, supported and celebrated.
The state-of-the-art Prep School, nestled in the rural Wilmar Lodge setting, gives children space to breathe, learn and grow. From woodland adventures to professional theatre performances, swimming lessons to 3D design, the facilities on offer to even the youngest of Westholmians is impressive.
Families interested in experiencing Westholme Prep in action are encouraged to contact the admissions team to arrange a personal tour.
“We look forward to welcoming your family to our Westholme Prep family,” concludes Carla. n

A passion and advocacy for the county of Lancashire, where he himself was raised and where he has chosen to bring up his own family, had been at the heart of everything Stephen stood for throughout his career in local politics.
People before politics is Stephen Atkinson’s mantra for a historic new dawn at County Hall, writes Katie Hammond
As a Conservative councillor and leader of Ribble Valley Borough Council, Stephen Atkinson dedicated more than six years to serving the residents and rural communities under his remit.
The beginning of 2025, however, marked a period of growing frustration with the party he had strived to support and uphold the values of so diligently and March of this year saw his controversial defection to Reform UK.
The 55-year-old father-of-two reflects: “After I visited Downing Street for the first time in 2019, I came away deflated at the feeling of confusion surrounding
the Conservative party at national level. It made me question everything we were striving for locally and I felt our voices were going unheard.”
From there, things moved very quickly and the local elections on 1st May this year, saw Reform UK officially take control of the local authority after winning 53 of the 84 seats – an emphatic vote of confidence from the residents of Lancashire. The Conservatives had previously held the council with 46 seats since 2017 having won the election then and again in 2021.
For Stephen’s part, this meant the election to represent his home borough of Ribble Valley South West, with a total of 2,174 votes and the subsequent ratification as leader of Lancashire County Council three weeks later.
Discussing the council’s new priorities, the challenges of leading under a Reform UK mandate and longer-term plans, Stephen, a self-trained engineer by trade, says: “I’m very much looking forward to working with fellow councillors and officers to build and deliver a better future for everyone in Lancashire.
“This county’s residents deserve to know where every pound is going. We’re questioning contracts, which may have gone unchallenged for years, re-focusing resources to frontline services and away from bureaucracy.
“We need to prioritise the essentials –social care, special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), roads and public safety and take the hardline on any spend that doesn’t serve the core needs of our communities.”
Stephen’s tenure at Ribble Valley Borough Council illustrates that he is a man of his word. With council tax successfully frozen for residents three times over seven years and the borough deemed the ninth healthiest place to live in the UK, he has proved his commitment
to positive impact and change.
By the time election day dawned on 1st May, Stephen’s bid for the seat of Ribble Valley South West – the second safest Conservative seat in Lancashire – was borne of a passion for change and a re-set for the communities he cares for so deeply.
He adds: “We met so many people who voiced their frustrations very articulately when canvassing in the run-up to the election. I was particularly shocked by some of the levels of rural poverty I witnessed –it saddens me to the core that many of our farms have dwindling stock and that some of our farmers are being forced to live in shocking conditions. They can’t even access the benefits system if needed, as they are deemed to have assets in the form of farm machinery – the very tools they need to farm their land to make a living.”
WE NEED TO PRIORITISE THE ESSENTIALS AND TAKE THE HARDLINE ON ANY SPEND THAT DOESN’T SERVE THE CORE NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITIES
Election day saw Stephen win the Ribble Valley South West seat by more than 1,000 votes. Then the real work began, with him being asked to stand as leader of Lancashire County Council in an unprecedented and rapid timeline for the local authority’s history.
Reflecting on his first few weeks in County Hall, Stephen says: “We’ve had the challenge of coming together – I felt it was extremely important to nurture a sense of security and collaboration with the officers as quickly as possible.
“Creating a cabinet was paramount so that we could continue to function as an efficient local authority body.
“One of the first things we did was to merge the existing climate change role with rural affairs and another priority was for
us to create a digital data and procurement cabinet member role to enable us to identify and benchmark where spend is accelerating.
“Along with these immediate changes, we must support the continuation of local democracy and keep a very challenging budget balanced.”
A visit from Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, served to reinforce Stephen’s ambitions for the team at County Hall.
Addressing staff, Mr Farage said: “We will be judged, and without wishing to put too much of a burden on your shoulders, when it comes how we do at the next general election, you will be a very important component part.
“You’ve been put here by the voters in Lancashire, you’ve been asked to make savings where they’re appropriate, you’ve been asked to uphold high standards of behaviour in public life and you’ve been asked to do the best for the county –and I know that in your hearts, all of you absolutely want to do that. Get this right –improve the county, improve people’s lives –and you will all feel an immense sense of pride.”
As for further plans, Stephen is emphatic in his stance on future local government structural changes and devolution: “Local services should be delivered by local councils and strategic services by county council. This two-tier system gives a sense of identity and understanding and proved hugely successful when some central functions were passported to local councils during the pandemic.
“There is a national move towards regional councils being created, which means the county of Lancashire could be split into a number of geographical areas. Lancashire as a county is complicated and we believe this decision should be made by the electorate. The two-tiered system means local services stay protected and also eschews a sense of place and civic pride.” n

GREAT BRITISH PUB NOMINATION
Bowland Beer Hall has been nominated as a finalist in the Best Beer Pub category at the prestigious Great British Pub Awards 2025, sponsored by the Society of Independent Breweries and Associates.
“As the only finalist from this region, we are proud to carry the flag for Bowland, for Lancashire and for the wider North-West,” said Warren Bennett, Commercial Director for James’ Places and Managing Director of Bowland Brewery.
Dan Johnson General Manager at Bowland Beer Hall, added: “To be recognised as one of the UK’s best beer pubs is a huge honour. Our team lives and breathes beer and this is a real celebration of our commitment to craft, community and quality.”

FORTY YEAR CELEBRATION
Bowker Motor Group has recognised Group Service Manager Stewart Rose for completing 40 years of continuous service with the company.
Stewart, from Clitheroe, joined Bowker Motor Group in 1985 as an apprentice technician and over the past four decades has held various roles including workshop foreman, technical adviser and workshop controller before becoming BMW Group Service Manager, responsible for both the Blackburn and Preston businesses.
During his time with Bowker, Stewart has witnessed the business grow into one of the most decorated BMW retailers in the country.
“It’s been a great journey and I’ve had the chance to work with some brilliant people along the way. The industry’s changed a lot, but the things that matter –good people, good service and doing things properly –are still the same.”
Stewart is among the longest-serving members of staff at Bowker and his contribution has been formally acknowledged by the company on previous milestones, including a celebratory hot air balloon ride for his 25th anniversary.

INTERNATIONAL ACCOLADE
Wayne
Hayhurst, Branch Principal at Raymond James, Ribble Valley, has recently returned from Raymond James Financial’s Global Top Advisors conference in Montreal
Raymond James Financial is a huge global investment services business that goes from strength to strength. The firm has celebrated 149 consecutive quarters – 37 years – of profitability. Two of the key drivers of RJF’s success are its relentless commitment to client service and maintaining a longterm focus.
Every two years Raymond James’ nearly 9000 wealth managers in the UK, Canada and USA are assessed against a range of criteria and the Global Top 50 Advisors are invited to the international conference. Just two Raymond James Investment Services Branch Principals in the UK achieved this incredible global accolade this year. Given that the Ribble Valley branch also received this recognition the last time the awards were presented, is a testament to the skill, dedication and continued commitment to clients from the team in Longridge. Over three insightful days, speakers and experts from around the world shared their perspectives on the trends reshaping financial services and how firms can evolve to meet rising expectations. Branch Principal Wayne Hayhurst picks out his highlights here:
AI, INNOVATION AND WHAT’S NEXT
One of the key themes throughout the event was the growing influence of artificial intelligence. From Keith Ferrazzi’s keynote address on the shift from traditional leadership to ‘teamship’ in hybrid, AI-enabled environments, to Zach Kass’s session on using AI for positive impact, the message was clear: AI is more than a productivity tool – it’s an opportunity to rethink how teams work and how clients are served.
INNOVATION STARTS WITH MINDSET
In her talk on the Surprising Power of Expectations, neuroscientist Tali Sharot shared how innovation isn’t only driven by resources or expertise – it’s often fuelled by

how we think. Some of the most meaningful progress happens when people take on problems others have avoided, missed or dismissed.
Another standout session came from Dennis Moseley Williams, who addressed the role of resistance in holding teams back. His message? The biggest barriers to progress are rarely external – they’re often internal – hesitation, self-doubt or the stories we tell ourselves about what’s possible. Translating ideas into real change takes more than inspiration –it requires discipline and a willingness to challenge the status quo.
Wayne notes: “At Raymond James, Ribble Valley I am keen to foster a culture where big ideas are backed by thoughtful, strategic planning. As we continue to refine our client experience, this mindset will help us keep moving forward with purpose – ensuring we stay ahead of the curve and continue delivering the high standards our clients expect and deserve!”
REDEFINING FINANCIAL SERVICES TO PUT YOU FIRST
Wayne returned with a renewed focus on turning ideas into action here at Raymond James, Ribble Valley. The ultimate goal? “To ensure our clients, both new and existing, continue to benefit from a service that evolves with their needs and expectations.”
Wayne concluded: “The conference underlined how dynamic the world of investment really is, responding to changes that affect us all, some of which we cannot control. Our advice must be sensitive to each client using the best technology available. I am looking forward to sharing my learning from the experience with the team here to the benefit of our clients.
“We welcome anyone who is serious about their finances to book an initial consultation and investigate how the talented team at Raymond James, Ribble Valley could help facilitate the financial future they envisage.” n

EXCEPTIONALLY EXCITING…
Known for its unique style and jaw-dropping looks, the Porsche Cayenne zips effortlessly along major highways and winding country roads, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Peter Austin
Call it an aversion to splinters in a rather tender spot, but sitting on the fence has never been for me. I always prefer to be decisive, make a choice and go with it. Until now. Until, in fact, the other day when a friend posed this question: “Tell me, of all the cars you have tested over the past decade scripting for this wonderful magazine, which one stands out as your clear favourite?”

What a conundrum! Where’s that fence when you most need it?
Sorry, call me a coward, but I simply can’t pick an outright top dog, although it would have to be pretty darned good. Scrap that –it would have to be exceptional to surpass the Porsche Cayenne.
THIS PORSCHE SUPER MACHINE, HAILED FAR AND WIDE FOR ITS OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE, RECENTLY CLAIMED THE ‘TOWCAR OF THE YEAR 2024’ AWARD
For the stupendous Cayenne is not just a thing of great motoring beauty and prestige, but it is a car that thrills, excites and perhaps most surprisingly, surprises.
Take the fact that this Porsche super machine,
hailed far and wide for its unique style, jaw-dropping looks and outstanding performance, recently claimed the ‘Towcar of the Year 2024’ award.
Would you have expected that? And from the esteemed Caravan and Motorhome Club no less.
Those very demanding judges selected it as the cream of the crop, describing it as, ‘An incredibly capable towcar, at high speeds as well as low. Super stable.’

You see, the Cayenne maybe right up there with the elite, but it is very much ready and raring for a heap of fun along the way.
Practical and versatile, it’s happy to go along with whatever your need and mood, zipping effortlessly along the major highways or taking the tightest of country lanes in its stride. And if you want to carry a roof tent or a bike rack for a camping trip – no problem whatsoever.
Since a facelift, it now offers even ‘more luxury’ and even ‘more performance’.
You’re immediately struck by a particularly expressive and athletic appearance – it possesses an impressive front end combined with more strongly arched wings, a slinky bonnet and technical-looking headlights to emphasise the overall width.
Three-dimensionally designed tail lights, uncluttered surfaces and a smart rear bumper with integrated number plate holder characterise the back end.
The smart Cayenne S comes with a highlydigitalised display and control concept, new chassis technology and innovative high-tech features.
OFFERING THREE DIFFERENT ENGINE VERSIONS, THE CAYENNE IS CLEARLY THE SPORTIEST CAR IN ITS SEGMENT
Offering three different engine versions, the Cayenne is clearly the sportiest car in its segment, whichever version you go for – an SUV for practicality or coupé for streamlined style.
But with Porsche placing greater focus on E-Performance – a powertrain portfolio of three E-Hybrid models – I was invited to cast an eye over the Cayenne S E-Hybrid.
This all-wheel drive, automatic, plug-in is a picture of perfection, inside and out, together with a performance of outstanding proportions.
With a system output of 346 kW/470 PS, it combines dynamic inclinations with exceptional comfort and the ability to handle most everyday trips with zero local emissions.
The latest Cayenne E-Hybrid surpasses its predecessor in three respects – electric range, electric motor power and charging speed. Its sustainable hybrid strategy also optimises charging and discharge phases in different driving modes for the respective environment in which it finds itself. The result is a compelling driving experience with even greater efficiency.
The much-acclaimed 3.0-litre V6 turbo engine has been paired with an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed transmission meaning a mix of high power with low economy.
Trust me this car is no slouch, it’s able to go from 0-62mph in under five seconds and reach a top speed of 158 mph.
To avoid longer charging times, due to the larger capacity, it has an on-board AC charger as standard. With a charging capacity of 11 kW (against 7.2 kW previously) the

HV battery can be fully charged at an appropriate power source in about two hours and 40 minutes – providing a fully electric range of up to 52 miles.
The cockpit includes the Porsche Driver Experience, extended connectivity with native apps in the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, a new passenger display and high-resolution HD Matrix LED headlights.
A panoramic roof, electrically extending towbar (maximum towing load is 3,500 kg) sports tailpipes, 22-inch turbo design wheels, 14-way electric comfort seats, BOSE surround sound, multifunction steering wheel with shift paddles and heating, privacy glass, adaptive cruise control, head-up display, lane change assist – the list is endless.
And the air quality system is a bit special too. The car can use predictive navigation data to detect approaching tunnel entrances
and automatically activate air recirculation. Optionally, a sensor can detect the level of fine dust particles in the air and pass it through a fine dust filter multiple times if necessary. Furthermore, an ioniser removes many germs and pollutants from the air, which is particularly beneficial for allergy sufferers. The magnificent Porsche Cayenne –most definitely not a car to be sneezed at! n

ALL-ELECTRIC SUPER CAR
The 426-mile range provided by the speedy new BMW iX xDrive60 M Sport, sets a benchmark in the ultra-competitive electric market, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Peter Austin
Once upon a time there was a driver and a car. The driver was the commander, the one in complete control, who decided and dictated what went on. The car simply obeyed.
I know, it sounds completely absurd.
But hey, here we are in 2025 and would you believe it, the roles have been completely reversed – with the benefits of parking assist – of course!
Take the all-thinking, all-action, almighty iX – BMW’s very first purpose-built allelectric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) –it was introduced a few years back as the ‘first chapter’ for the global brand with pioneering design, cutting-edge technology and dynamic electrified drive.
Well, let it be known that the said BMW iX is now even better with more power, sportier design and driving dynamics, alongside an increased electric range.
The impressive trio are the BMW iX xDrive45, BMW iX xDrive60 M Sport and BMW iX M70 xDrive.
The BMW iX xDrive60 M Sport was my gift for a test drive and it looked and felt the business from the get-go.
The plusses came thick and fast, but let’s get a big one out of the way first – it provides 426 miles of electric range (WLTP).
Pause! Explanation required for those not conversant with motoring jargon.
SO, THERE YOU HAVE IT – AN ALL-ELECTRIC SUPER CAR TO RANK ALONGSIDE THE VERY BEST
WLTP range refers to the official range of a vehicle determined by the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). This standardises how fuel efficiency and range are measured, aiming for more accurate and realistic figures and provides an estimated distance a vehicle can travel on a single charge.
Incidentally, the 426 miles (WLTP) provided by the new BMW iX xDrive60 M Sport sets a benchmark in an ultra-competitive environment.
Ok, job done, move on.
Redeveloped performance electronics, means the new BMW iX xDrive60 (which succeeds the BMW iX xDrive50) offers around 34 miles of additional range.

As for power, this surprisingly speedy motor benefits from 544hp (horsepower) needing only 4.6 seconds to go from a standing start to 62 mph.
Elevated trims, including a completely redesigned M Sport arrangement creates a bold exterior design presence, which continues inside the cabin.
There are seven new exterior paint finishes and the unique 23-inch M light-alloy wheels are awesome, while the BMW iconic glow for the kidney grille is another eye-catching feature, as are the quirky, push-button doors on the interior.

With an electric motor on both the front and rear axle the drive system has been fine-tuned and power electronics further developed to deliver noticeably more oomph.
As for route planning, always a key area, an intuitive user interface allows you to enter your destination in advance in the My BMW App, as well as preferred departure and arrival times and any desired charging stops. The route suggested by the BMW Maps

navigation system can then be customised to include charging stations. In an optimised route view, you are shown precise information about the availability of charging stations, the required charging time and the impact this will have on expected arrival time. So helpful.
The driver assistance systems set new standards in functionality and reliability. Driving Assistant Plus including Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go functionality, front collision warning with brake intervention and Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant and a rear camera.
THE PLUSSES CAME THICK AND FAST, BUT LET’S GET A BIG ONE OUT OF THE WAY FIRST –IT PROVIDES 426 MILES OF ELECTRIC RANGE
As for comfort, new M multifunction seats –finished in Alcantara/Sensatec or natural leather as an option – offer enhanced lateral support with a striking new design.

M Sport customers additionally benefit from a three-spoke M leather steering wheel, Dark Silver trim finishers, an Anthracite headlining, M-specific pedals and a highgloss black centre console.
Standard equipment includes an alarm system, a welcome and goodbye animation, adaptive LED headlights, comfort access, heated seats and steering wheel, while the BMW Live Cockpit Professional with headup display and Harman Kardon Surround Sound System are also available.
Based on the BMW Operating System 8.5, BMW iDrive not only offers intuitive operation using the touch function on the BMW curved display and voice control with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, but also the use of digital services such as video streaming and in-car gaming.
The BMW ID and the My BMW App provide a personalised user experience, while the BMW digital key allows for a simplified and convenient setup using the new setup card.
So, there you have it – an all-electric super car to rank alongside the very best – happy to welcome you on board as its driving assistant! n

RUGBY ICON & BRAND AMBASSADOR
Rugby legend Will Greenwood has partnered with LANX to become a brand ambassador for the Whalley-based company
Ribble Valley footwear brand LANX has upped its game, partnering with none other than England rugby icon Will Greenwood as a brand ambassador. The announcement marks an exciting chapter for both the
Lancashire-based business and the rugby legend, as they unite around shared values of craftsmanship, character and community.
LANX, based in Whalley, has built its reputation by blending British design with a global edge. Its high-quality shoes are
crafted with meticulous attention to detail and the brand has gained a loyal following, particularly among professionals and sports fans alike. From day one, LANX has maintained close ties with the rugby world –collaborating with clubs such as Harlequins and Leicester Tigers, where Greenwood himself once played.
For LANX founder Marco Vaghetti (Marv) bringing Greenwood on board is a full-circle moment: “Bringing Will Greenwood on as a LANX brand ambassador is a proud milestone for the brand. He’s a true legend of the game, with roots that run close to home. Will’s achievements on the pitch speak for themselves and having someone

I’M
EXCITED TO BE AN AMBASSADOR FOR LANX –A BRAND WITH BIG AMBITION AND A REAL CONNECTION TO THE RUGBY WORLD
of his calibre represent LANX helps solidify our growing presence within the rugby community. It’s a partnership built on shared values and local pride.”
Will Greenwood, born in Lancashire in 1972, grew up just a stone’s throw from LANX HQ in Hurst Green. His sporting talents first came to light at Stonyhurst College before he went on to Sedbergh, excelling in both cricket and rugby. Greenwood began his rugby career with Preston Grasshoppers before moving to elite level with Harlequins and Leicester Tigers.
His professional journey is the stuff of rugby folklore. Capped 55 times for England, Greenwood was a key member of the 2003 squad that famously lifted the Rugby World
Cup. He also toured with the British and Irish Lions three times, including the iconic 1997 tour of South Africa – still regarded as one of the greatest in the sport’s history.
LANX is already formulating a tribute to that tour with a nod to the cult-classic 1997 Lions shirt, set to be released soon.
As a player, Greenwood’s statistics are staggering. England never lost a game in which he scored – a remarkable 31-try streak that underlines his impact on the pitch. He remains the second-highest international try scorer in the centre position, behind only Brian O’Driscoll.
HE’S A TRUE LEGEND OF THE GAME, WITH ROOTS THAT RUN CLOSE TO HOME
Reflecting on the new role, Greenwood said: “I’m excited to be an ambassador for LANX – a brand with big ambition and a real connection to the rugby world. There’s something special about working with a team that values quality and I’m looking forward to what we’ll build together over the coming seasons.”
Now a well-respected columnist, speaker and rugby pundit, Greenwood brings his analytical insight to TV broadcasts, continuing to contribute to the sport he loves, long after hanging up his boots.
His connection to his Lancashire roots remains strong, making him a natural fit for LANX, a brand proudly flying the flag for northern quality and creativity.
Marv jokes: “While we’ll forgive him for supporting Manchester City, there’s no denying the numbers – Greenwood is one of England’s greatest!”
With Greenwood as an ambassador, LANX is not just aligning with a rugby legend – it’s reinforcing its identity as a brand that champions authenticity, local pride and excellence. And as the collaboration unfolds, fans of both the brand and the game can expect to see some exciting developments in the seasons ahead.
For LANX and Greenwood, this is more than a partnership – it’s a home-grown story of success, ambition and shared values. n

SURF TO SMOKE

Doug Imber has always had a passion for barbecuing, a love that runs deep and stems from his childhood in Australia
When Doug Imber first stepped onto UK soil in 2011, he brought with him more than just a sunny disposition.
Hailing from the beach-lined suburbs of Sydney, Australia, Doug arrived with a deeprooted passion for the outdoors, the ocean and most importantly – barbecues.
A barbecue is a way of life in Australia and for Doug, it became second nature from a young age. “It’s just what you do. It’s ingrained in the culture. Every weekend, every public holiday, everyone would be talking about what to cook on the barbie.
“On Boxing Day we would always light up the barbecue and cook the remains of the Christmas ham with eggs,” explains Doug, who as a youngster loved being on the beach and in the sea: “I was always either sailing, swimming or surfing – on, in or under the water,” recalls Doug, who went on to study Naval Architecture at university. He then entered the commercial shipping industry, working as a vessel agent.
When he moved to the UK he lived on the Isles of Scilly working in fisheries and
conservation, a job he continues to do today on the seas surrounding the UK.
After meeting his partner, Doug moved north where they now live in the Ribble Valley with their two young children.

“When Steph and I moved here she had a Weber barbecue that was so rusty she was going to throw it out. But when I opened it up it was sparkling, brand new inside. I told her I would cook something on it and if she didn’t like it, she could throw it out.
“She wasn’t keen on lamb, so I got some beautiful lamb chops, seasoned them with salt, pepper, garlic and paprika and cooked them over the coals.
“It’s a different taste when you cook on a
barbecue – as the fat from the lamb drops onto the coals giving that little charred smoky taste that’s completely different from cooking in a frying pan.
“She loved the lamb – so I got to keep the barbecue!”
Like sailing and the sea, barbecues are a passion for Doug who recalls an unforgettable stint when as a youngster, he spent six months living in the bush for school: “I think it was to teach us independence. We had to light fires and cook our own dinner.”
That experience sparked more than just independence in Doug. It lit a fire, quite literally, for outdoor cooking.

Years later, Doug’s love of barbecuing hasn’t waned – it’s only grown stronger. Whether it’s a flame-grilled sharing steak or delicious chicken gyros, Doug is always near his Big Green Egg barbecue or making pizza and grilled vegetables in his outdoor pizza oven.
“If I’m cooking for a crowd, chicken gyros is my go-to barbecue dish as the prep can be done the day before and the chicken takes a few hours on the rotisserie, so it gives me time to socialise.
“I also like seafood – lobster, which is blanched for three minutes, halved and barbecued for just a few minutes and brushed with garlic butter is also delicious!” says Doug, who recently shared a traditional bush recipe with his children – damper bread which is basic dough, wrapped around a stick and rotated over the fire until it turns golden brown: “The kids were fascinated by it.”
For Doug and his family, moments making damper bread or cooking for friends are about more than just good food – they’re about memories, skills and the stories that go with them. n

PURA VIDA – CAFÉ DE COSTA RICA
Irecently caught up with Tom from Wild Pen Coffee Roasters after his and Milly’s return from Costa Rica, where they deepened relationships with two remarkable coffee farms.
Their first stop was to Aquiares, which in indigenous Hueter language means ‘the land between rivers’. The farm is nestled between the Aquiares and Turrialba rivers and steeped in pre-Colombian history.
The visit was an ongoing

connection with Diego, whose father was originally the owner of Aquiares Farm and who is honoured with the Don Alfonso Caturra varietal. Great topics for discussion with Diego included excitement around growing special varietals and microlots.
Next was a visit to La Minita in the Los Santos region, a farm
whose name translates to ‘little mine’. It’s a place Tom described as full of breathtaking scenery and vibrant energy. They had a personal tour of the estate, on the back of a farm truck, witnessing coffee cherries being picked and processed. Tom was especially excited to share that their first shipment from La Minita is

currently afloat and due to arrive in July. He hinted that this is a great addition to Wild Pen varietals and certainly one to look out for.

ROOTED IN NATURE
Proud of recent awards and nominations Eight at Gazegill continues to champion sustainable farming and true field to fork dining in their unique restaurant, writes Gail Bailey
Eight at Gazegill is a restaurant with a purpose. Set in the heart of the Ribble Valley on an organic, family-run farm that’s been cared for over 500 years and offers a true field-to-fork experience, where every plate tells a story of provenance, sustainability and seasonal harmony. Menus are inspired by the landscape, featuring fresh organic produce from the farm and foraged ingredients from meadow, moorland and hedgerow.
“Since opening just 15 months ago, we’ve been blown away by the support from our guests and humbled by the recognition we’ve received,” say General Manager Kimberley Talbot.
“We were recently named regional finalists in the Countryside Alliance Awards

THE NOMINATIONS AND AWARDS MEAN A LOT TO THE WHOLE TEAM AT EIGHT AT GAZEGILL – AND EVEN MORE SO AS THEY SHINE A LIGHT ON SMALL RURAL BUSINESSES
The nominations and awards mean a lot to the whole team at Eight at Gazegill – and even more so as they shine a light on small rural businesses doing things differently and with determination.

The incredible Eight at Gazegill team are at the heart of the achievements they have seen since the restaurant opened: “From our kitchen team led by chef patron Doug Crampton to the front-of-house family that greets every guest with warmth and care, Eight is a team-driven venture through and through,” says Kim. “Our success has only been possible because of their passion, creativity and shared belief in what we’re building.”
And there is plenty to look ahead to as this is only just the beginning: “We’re excited to expand our events calendar with seasonal farm feasts and more immersive tasting evenings,” Kim adds. The restaurant is also growing its wonderful wedding and private hire offering following the success of their first ever wedding fair, with a focus on bespoke, sustainable celebrations that reflect their values.
“Every day at Eight is a step forward, rooted in where we’ve come from, but always looking toward something new!” n

FLAVOUR, FINESSE & FUN
Yu’s culinary empire stretches from Copster Green to Portugal, with Manchester next. Tedd Walmsley catches up with Victor Yu to learn more about his latest ventures
Catching up with old friends is always a pleasure but catching up with Victor Yu over a glass of wine and a few dishes from his latest menu is something else entirely. As ever Victor is full of energy, ideas and enthusiasm and our conversation flows as easily as the wine in his newly opened restaurant, Yu Algarve in Portugal.
Yes that’s right the man who put Copster Green on the culinary map has now set his sights a little further afield and it’s safe to say it’s already a resounding success.
“We wanted to create something special out there for the expat community, the golfers, the holidaymakers and of course the locals,” Victor tells me with a big grin.
“Portugal has always been a favourite

place of mine and when the opportunity came up to open something in the Algarve it just felt right.”
WE WANTED TO CREATE A PLACE THAT PEOPLE WOULD TALK ABOUT AND COME BACK TO AGAIN AND AGAIN AND SO FAR, WE’RE DOING JUST THAT
It seems plenty of others agree with him because the place has barely had an empty seat since its doors opened. With the talented Chef Bruno Birkbeck heading up the kitchen, Victor says the partnership has been seamless: “Bruno gets the vision – he’s all about flavour, finesse and fun, which is what we’re about too. We wanted to create a place that people would talk about and come back to again and again and so far, we’re doing just that.”
Yu Algarve is already attracting a mix of sun-soaked regulars and the occasional famous face, all lured in by a menu that blends Victor’s signature Asian flair with some local influences and a fresh contemporary feel.
“We’ve had golfers in straight off the course, still in their spikes and then later that night a couple of celebrities in for cocktails and
small plates. It’s a great mix and it keeps things interesting.”
Back on home turf Victor is just as busy and just as passionate. The much-loved Teepee on the Green at Yu Copster is back and looking better than ever. From 4.30pm to 6.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays, guests can now enjoy a delicious new snack menu that’s already causing a stir. Think prawn crumpets, salt and pepper wings, duck spring rolls and a tempting array of small plates, perfect for sharing or grazing over a chilled drink.

“The Teepee was something we really wanted to showcase again,” Victor explains. “It’s such a great space and with this new snack menu it gives people a little taste of what we can do in a more relaxed vibe. But it’s also about showing what the Teepee can be for private events. Birthdays, small weddings or just a party with friends. It’s a space with a bit of magic.”
While we chat, he’s already flicking through his phone showing me photos

of setups they’ve done recently, inside the Teepee with fairy lights, long tables, incredible food and the unmistakable Yu style. “We want people to see it and imagine their own celebration there.”
And as if two buzzing restaurants and a thriving events space weren’t enough, Victor is also preparing to open something entirely different over in Manchester. Choi Wan by Victor Yu will soon open as part of the new House of Socials concept on First Street, Manchester and it promises to be another exciting addition to the city’s dynamic food scene.

“Choi Wan is our take on vibrant, fun, street food but with that Yu twist. It’s about bold flavour energy and creativity. Manchester is such an exciting place right now and being part of this new project feels like the right move.”
Choi Wan will offer fast, casual dining, inspired by East Asian street markets with small plates, noodle dishes and some unexpected flavour combinations.
“It’s a younger, slightly wilder sibling, to what we do at Copster and Algarve,” Victor laughs. “But the DNA is still there.”
With all this talk of expansion you might
wonder whether Yu Copster Green risks being overshadowed, but Victor is quick to reassure me: “Copster is our heart, it’s where it all started and we’re not going anywhere. In fact, we’re investing more than ever in what we’re doing here.” That includes the launch of a stunning new dim sum tasting menu that promises to elevate the already popular dishes to a new level.

WE’RE CURATING A WHOLE NEW EXPERIENCE FOR OUR DINERS, ELEGANT PRESENTATION, REFINED FLAVOURS AND A BIT OF DRAMA
“We’re curating a whole new experience for our diners, elegant presentation, refined flavours and a bit of drama. We want people to come and feel like they’re somewhere really special.”
And that really is the golden thread running through everything Victor does whether it’s the golf courses of the Algarve, the buzz of Manchester or the peaceful countryside of the Ribble Valley his focus is always on delivering quality, style and experience.

While he might be jetting off for meetings or planning another pop-up collaboration somewhere sunny, Victor’s commitment to his home base remains unwavering: “We’ve got so much planned for the summer,” he tells me. “There’ll be collabs with some amazing chefs, themed nights, wine tastings and more. People should definitely keep an eye on our socials so they don’t miss out.”

So, there you have it from Copster to the coast and back again, Victor Yu is showing no signs of slowing down. But no matter how far his travels take him he’s always got one eye on home and something fresh cooking in the kitchen. n

Wines are clearly chosen with care. Whether you’re going for a full bottle or a single glass, you’re in good hands. The by-the-glass selection is better than you’ll find in most places, and they’re priced with fairness in mind. It takes the stress out of choosing and lets you focus on enjoying the food.
As for when to go, it really depends. A solo lunch or a quick catch-up with a friend?
PERFECTION ON A PLATE
The Rum Fox in Grindleton strikes the perfect balance of charm, flavour and hospitality. A visit here feels more like dining with friends than eating out, writes Anthony P Driver
There’s something effortlessly appealing about the Rum Fox. Maybe it’s the warmth of the welcome, where you’re greeted by name like an old friend. Maybe it’s the fact it doesn’t try too hard to be anything other than what it is, unpretentious, genuine and consistently good. Whatever it is, chefowner Bob Geldeard and his partner Kiaja Monk have created something special in the heart of Grindleton.
The vibe is spot on. Stylish without being flashy. The kind of place where you feel comfortable whether you’re dressed up for dinner or popping in for a casual lunch. The option to eat in the relaxed bar, the light-filled conservatory or the more formal dining room means you can tailor the mood to suit the moment. And yes, the retractable roof is a bit of a wild card but it works – it’s

one of those little touches that makes you smile – and absolutely perfect for the long summer days.
The food? Pretty close to faultless. My ideal three courses here are a masterclass in balance and bold flavour. First, the rabbit and black pudding – earthy and rich, with a subtle peppery warmth and just enough bite to the pudding. The rabbit is tender, gently gamey and works so well with the deeper tones of the dish.
IT’S THE KIND OF PLACE WHERE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WHETHER YOU’RE DRESSED UP FOR DINNER OR POPPING IN FOR A CASUAL LUNCH
Then Morecambe Bay sea bass – crisp skin, perfectly cooked flesh, delicate and flaky with the freshness of the sea still clinging to it. It’s served with accompaniments that enhance rather than overwhelm.
And to finish, the Amalfi lemon meringue, a dish that sings with zesty brightness. The lemon is sharp and cleansing, the meringue cloud-like and not too sweet – and there’s a lovely crumbly texture underneath that brings it all together.

Perfect. Want a hearty bite? There’s always a great pie on. Sunday roasts here are a bit of a secret gem – medium rare beef done properly, crisp roast potatoes, just the right amount of seasonal veg and a glossy, flavour-packed gravy. Leave room for dessert. You won’t regret it. n

TOP SPOT…

Rob Walmsley and his family enjoy a laid-back lunch and delicious ice-cream at Holdens & Co in Whalley
There’s something about a relaxed Saturday afternoon that just calls for good food, great coffee and a place that welcomes you in like you’ve been there a hundred times before. That’s exactly what we found at Holdens & Co Deli and Kitchen in Whalley.
My wife Jen, our little boy Charlie and I arrived just after lunchtime and the place had that perfect Saturday buzz – busy enough to feel lively, but still calm and relaxed. Inside, it’s bright and modern, with natural tones, big windows and those little thoughtful touches that make you want to settle in for a while.
We found a spot by the window and made ourselves at home. From there, we could watch Whalley in full swing – dog walkers, cyclists, people popping in and out of shops. It set the scene for what turned out to be a brilliant lunch.
I went for the Farnsworth rump steak ciabatta with fries and a side salad. It was absolutely delicious – juicy steak, packed with flavour, with mustard mayo, Mrs Darlington’s caramelised onions, rocket and sun-dried tomatoes. The fries were spot on – golden, crispy and impossible to leave alone. Jen chose the New York Deli on a pretzel roll (she’s still talking about that pastrami) and Charlie tucked into a ham and Grandma Singleton’s Tasty Lancashire cheese toastie with fries, which he demolished with lots of ‘dip dip’ involved –obviously. Happy kid, happy parents.

After lunch, we couldn’t resist the ice cream counter, which Charlie had had his eye on since we walked in. He went all in on vanilla in a sprinkle-covered chocolate waffle cone with chocolate sauce – basically heaven for a four-year-old. I picked the white chocolate and honeycomb, which was rich, creamy and just the right amount of sweet. Jen couldn’t choose one, so she had mint choc chip and banana – a surprising combo, but apparently it worked!
Just when we thought we were wrapping up, Jen treated herself to a glass of champagne

(well, when in Whalley) while Charlie and I had a wander around the deli shop. It’s packed with local produce, foodie gifts and all the pantry bits you want to take home.

And, there’s even more reason to visit now, as Holdens & Co are entering an exciting new chapter with new General Manager, Matt Ward, on board and from 1st July, they’ll also be welcoming Group Head Chef Paul Cookson to the team. With him comes a refreshed menu full of locally sourced ingredients and creative twists on comfort food – think Lancashire rarebit on sourdough, breakfast bagels, freshly made sandwiches and takeaway salad boxes, pancakes with their own housemade ice cream and all manner of sweet treats from brownies to cruffins. It’s safe to say we’ll be back soon!
Holdens & Co is one of those places that just gets it right. Quality food, warm service and an atmosphere that feels like a little escape from the everyday. n

A SIZZLING SUMMER
The Three Fishes, Mitton, offers alfresco dining, ‘Forgotten Fish’, Fusion flavours and so much more
As summer ripens over Lancashire’s Ribble Valley, The Three Fishes in Mitton, helmed by acclaimed chef Nigel Haworth, welcomes guests into a seasonal celebration of local cuisine at its best. With alfresco dining, a flourishing organic farm garden, fire-cooked dishes and the soothing charm of the countryside, every visit feels like a return to what truly matters: good food, good company and a deep connection to the land.
At the heart of this experience is the organic farm garden, a one-acre oasis where vegetables, herbs, and flowers are cultivated using no-dig, regenerative principles. Each plate reflects what the soil offers that day –perhaps garden courgettes roasted over coals, a medley of heritage tomatoes dressed in house-fermented vinegar, freshly picked broad beans crushed with mint and lemon, or the sweetest of strawberry soufflés.
Guests are invited to get even closer to the land through the Step Into the Garden experience, a unique opportunity to explore the ethos and cultivation behind every dish. Taking place on 21st June, 5th July, 19th July,
9th August or 23rd August, this guided walk through the garden begins with a refreshing cordial before guests meet the gardening team to learn about seasonal planting, composting methods and the restaurant’s closed-loop sustainability model. The visit concludes with a seated tasting of freshly harvested produce, prepared simply to let its natural flavour shine. It’s not just informative, it’s a gentle reminder of the beauty of food at its source.
AT THE HEART OF THIS EXPERIENCE IS THE ORGANIC FARM GARDEN, A ONE-ACRE OASIS WHERE VEGETABLES, HERBS, AND FLOWERS ARE CULTIVATED USING NO-DIG, REGENERATIVE PRINCIPLES
As evening falls, the open-air barbecue becomes a theatre of fire, with Nigel and his team searing local meats, fresh-caught fish and just-picked vegetables over glowing embers. The air is fragrant with the scent of smoked garden greens and charred local lamb, while guests gather around rustic wooden tables, dining beneath the stars.
The restaurant’s acclaimed ‘Forgotten Fish’ series also returns this summer, spotlighting

underused yet delicious British seafood from the UK’s coastal waters. Events include themed evenings celebrating regional fisheries: Isle of Man & Morecambe Bay (27th June), Yorkshire and East English Coast (25th July), and Devon & Cornwall (26th September). Each dinner is a deep dive into provenance, sustainability, and the delicate artistry of cooking lesser-known fish.
But this summer is only the beginning. From 13th to 18th October, The Three Fishes will host Fusion, a bold new food festival curated by Nigel Haworth, the culinary force behind Northcote’s legendary Obsession. Fusion brings together some of the UK’s most dynamic chefs to explore creative expressions of British cuisine fused with global influences. Expect dazzling tasting menus, world-class wine pairings and intimate, chef-led dinners.
Whether it’s sipping sparkling wine beneath the setting sun, tasting just-picked herbs from the garden, tucking into a flamegrilled feast, or relaxing with a post-walk pint, summer at The Three Fishes is more than a meal – it’s a memory in the making. n

This special release is infused with dried Himalayan Balsam flowers, gathered from Spring Wood in July. Yes, that bright pink plant that flourishes along riverbanks and footpaths may be pretty to look at but it’s also an invasive species that smothers native vegetation. The volunteers work hard each month to tackle its spread – and this time, they’re putting it to delicious use.
IT’S A BEAUTIFUL SMALL-BATCH SPIRIT THAT CAPTURES THE BEST OF THE RIBBLE VALLEY –SUSTAINABILITY, CREATIVITY AND A REAL SENSE OF WORKING TOGETHER
A true community collaboration, the flowers are foraged by the volunteers themselves, dried, then vapour-infused into the gin by the expert hands at Brindle Distillery. Even the bottle label is a celebration of local creativity, designed by a local artist and giving a nod to the woodland roots of the project. It’s a beautiful smallbatch spirit that captures the best of the Ribble Valley – sustainability, creativity and a real sense of working together.
The gin will be released in August, with only a few hundred bottles available. It’ll be sold exclusively at Whalley Wine Shop and online for £39.99. Expect it to sell out fast, but if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to sample it at the Friends of Spring Wood Open Day on Saturday 6th September, held at the meeting building near the car park. Whalley Wine Shop will be there with tasters and tales of how the gin came to life.
Better still, if you’ve got a few hours to spare on the first Saturday of the month, wellies at the ready and a hands-on attitude, the Friends of Spring Wood would love you to join them. Whether you’re into gardening,

TIME TO CELEBRATE!
As their first birthday approaches, there is lots to celebrate at CDJ Riverside Restaurant in Darwen, with a fabulous first year and plenty to look forward to, writes Gail Bailey
“It’s been an amazing first 12 months at CDJ Riverside,” says Project Manager Erin Kelly. “Dan and the whole team are grateful to all our wonderful customers, and we have lots of exciting plans ahead as we move into our second year!”
Originally the much-loved Swan and a popular destination for locals and Blackburn Rovers’ fans for many years, the pub was often referred to as ‘Uncle Jacks’. As times changed converting it into CDJ Riverside was the idea of Red Rose Drylining business owners Mark Holden and Michael Anderson: “Mark and Michael were determined to revive the pub and once they had managed to get local chef Dan Jolley on board the restaurant quickly became a favourite place to dine and socialise in Lower Darwen –with lots of Ribble Valley residents making the trip over,” says Erin.

WE ARE SO GRATEFUL TO OUR FANTASTIC CUSTOMERS AND OUR HARD-WORKING, DEDICATED TEAM WHO HAVE HELPED CDJ RIVERSIDE HAVE AN INCREDIBLE FIRST YEAR
Much of the success of CDJ is down to the talents of chef and co-owner Dan Jolley and his extensive experience in some of finest restaurants across Europe as well as the UK. Having begun his career as an apprentice at Michelin starred Northcote, Dan won Chef of the Year in 2007. His skill is crafting dishes that are a combination of high-class cuisine, rooted in nutritious and healthy ingredients: “Dan has a deep respect for quality ingredients and a commitment to creating dishes that tantalise the senses. Having honed his skills in some of the finest kitchens around the world, Dan infuses his dishes with a blend of international flair and local charm,” explains Erin.
And the design and décor of the refurbished restaurant along with Dan’s culinary expertise has led to CDJ Riverside being awarded two AA Rosettes in this first year: “It’s wonderful that we have received this award so soon into our journey,” Erin says. “We are the only restaurant in Blackburn with Darwen holding two AA Rosettes, and one of only a small number across Lancashire to have the accolade. We really are very proud of the whole team.”

The new menu is testament to Dan’s skill and is ever-changing to reflect the seasons and availability of local ingredients: “The carbonara egg yolk ravioli with smoked bacon and pecorino is one of our signature dishes,” Erin says. “It’s one of our most popular choices on the menu. Another popular choice is butter-poached cod served with saffron and corn in a white wine and tarragon sauce – and for something extra special, lots of our customers choose Tournedos Rossini, which is an 8oz fillet served with foie gras, a Gruyère crouton with Madeira sauce and black truffle.”
Unique dishes are one of the reasons CDJ received the acclaimed AA Rosette award, such as the ‘not so’ French onion soup –as this comes as an onion pate with a consommé as a little surprise and a Comte crouton and thyme.

As we enjoy long summer evenings al fresco dining is perfect at CDJ Riverside, where guests can enjoy a beautiful outside dining area festooned with lights and the relaxing sound of the specially designed water feature: “Our al fresco space is really

sought after,” says Erin. “And customers can choose from any menu, with lots enjoying a ‘chippy-style tea’ on a Friday with a twocourse offering, which is the perfect way to start the weekend!”

WE LOOK FORWARD TO CELEBRATING WITH FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CUSTOMERS BOTH OLD AND NEW AND LOOK FORWARD TO OUR CONTINUED SUCCESS!
Another popular menu choice is the ‘open lasagne’ which consists of slow-roast beef shin served with a Comte cream and focaccia – perfect with a cold glass of beer or a chilled vino!
There will be a marquee in place on 19th
PARTY TIME at CDJ 19th July 2025
July to celebrate the restaurant being one year old with an Abba themed 70s night where guests will be donning the colour and sparkle of the disco era: “It’s going to be a fabulous event. We’ll have DJs, wonderful food of course and even a stilt walker!” explains Erin. Live music accompanies the whole experience too and the team can’t wait to celebrate!

Erin adds: “We are so grateful to our fantastic customers and our hard-working, dedicated team who have helped CDJ Riverside have an incredible first year. We look forward to celebrating with friends, family and customers both old and new and look forward to our continued success!” n

AWARD-WINNING HOSPITALITY
There’s something magical about a long summer’s afternoon –the rolling hills, the golden light, the clink of glasses and the gentle murmur of happy diners. And there’s no better place to soak it all in than the Black Bull, writes Tedd Walmsley
Icaught up once again with the evervibrant Becky Govier, the effervescent owner of the Black Bull at Old Langho, on a breezy June morning. As always, Becky is buzzing with excitement: “We’ve got so much planned, Tedd! The team is on fire, the new menu is nearly there and the vibe this summer? It’s going to be something else.”

After last year’s stunning refurb, the Black Bull isn’t just looking good, it’s living and breathing summer hospitality at its very best. Sitting outside in their beautifully styled alfresco area, twinkling festoon lights overhead, planters spilling with colour, dogs lounging happily under tables, it’s easy to see why people are coming from far and wide to visit.
THE PIZZAS ARE BACK, WOOD-FIRED ON-SITE AND PERFECT FOR SHARING WITH A GLASS OF ROSÉ AS THE SUN SETS
Becky gives me a sneak preview of the soon-to-launch summer menu, which she promises will bring a fresh twist to the classics the locals already love: “We’re working with some incredible seasonal produce,” she explains. “We’ll have daily

specials, weekend-only creations and those comforting favourites our guests come back for.” From fresh seafood dishes perfect for a warm evening to flame-grilled meats straight off the barbecue, the menu will be paired with crisp wines, local beers and some dangerously good cocktails. “And yes,” Becky grins. “The pizzas are back, wood-fired on-site and perfect for sharing with a glass of rosé as the sun sets over Old Langho.”
There’s also a jam-packed calendar of events lined up. Live music weekends are returning with local acoustic talent, giving those long summer nights a chilled, festivalstyle atmosphere. Family barbecues, cocktail masterclasses, wine tastings and themed supper clubs are all on the horizon.
“The whole idea is to make the Black Bull a place where every visit feels like a little celebration. We want people to linger, to relax and to enjoy that sense of occasion, even if it’s just a Thursday night!” adds Becky.
Part of the magic here is the setting. The views stretch out across the Ribble Valley, all lush fields and golden light as the sun dips behind the trees. Whether you’re sipping a spritzer in the garden or tucked into one of the newly designed indoor spaces, there’s a calm, joyful energy that’s hard to beat. And when it comes to private dining, the Black Bull has quietly become one of the most sought-after venues in the region.
“We’ve hosted everything,” Becky tells me. “From intimate birthdays to full venue takeovers for weddings. We can tailor every detail, menus, drinks, décor and our team go above and beyond.”
The Barn is the venue’s stylish and versatile private event space. With exposed beams, rustic charm and its own bar, it can be transformed to suit any occasion. Becky’s team have a reputation for making every event, big or small, feel genuinely personal.

“We’re not a faceless venue,” she smiles. “We’re a passionate team who care deeply about every guest.” And she means it. Every table, every detail, every smile from the staff is delivered with genuine warmth. The team here clearly take huge pride in what they do and it shows.
Earlier this year, the Black Bull was named Pub of the Year by Marketing Lancashire, a well-earned recognition of Becky’s tireless drive and the team’s unwavering commitment to hospitality. “It means the world to us,” she says, clearly emotional. “We’ve worked so hard to create something special here. A place that feels warm, welcoming and always evolving. Winning that award was a moment I’ll never forget.”
As I prepare to leave, Becky walks me out

to the garden, now beginning to fill with the lunchtime crowd. There’s laughter in the air, the smell of grilled meats, the soft sound of acoustic guitar from a speaker hidden somewhere in the hedgerows. “It’s everything I dreamed of,” Becky says, taking it all in. “But we’re only just getting started.”
WE’VE
WORKED SO
HARD
TO CREATE SOMETHING SPECIAL HERE. A PLACE THAT FEELS WARM, WELCOMING AND ALWAYS EVOLVING. WINNING THAT AWARD WAS A
MOMENT I’LL NEVER FORGET
And with that, I’m reminded once again why the Black Bull stands tall as one of the Ribble Valley’s finest. It’s not just the food or the setting, though both are exceptional. It’s the heart, the soul and the genuine love of hospitality that radiates from every corner. Make sure it’s on your list this summer and come hungry. n

COSTA DEL ‘DINGHAM
Mark Dixon didn’t have to go far to enjoy some delicious Spanish cocina and wonderful service
The previous time I was at The Fleece in Addingham was November. It was my wife’s birthday and we had celebrated with friends at Wetherby Races. Not wanting to go straight home, we had alighted at The Fleece for some cleansing ales in front of a log fire, for a cosy, festive and jolly experience.
Last Friday we experienced another version of the same venue. Sat on the Terrace in the warm, early evening sun we had been invited to attend one of their monthly events. This time a Paella and Tapas evening and, as one of my daughters commented, it felt like we were abroad. The Costa del ‘Dingham, no less. We kicked off with refreshing Madris and cocktails and tucked into the tapas –Chorizo Smoked Albondigas; Manchego Croquetas; Salt Cod, Chorizo and Saffron Spanish Omelette; and Salt and Pepper Calamari. All delicious and a perfect starter. Drinks replenished, we paused for a moment before big plates of paella were delivered. The De Marisco features saffron-infused Bomba rice cooked with Argentinian prawns, mussels and clams. The rice had perfectly absorbed the rich seafood flavours whilst developing that coveted crispy bottom layer. The De Carne with Chicken and Chorizo was a great alternative option for my carnivorous wife.
We saved room of course for a sweet ending and my Crema Catalana was simply delicious.
Though the food was all to a very high standard perhaps the highlight of the evening was how we were looked after by Emma and her team. They helped make the night such a fun one and nothing was too much trouble. It’s great to be served by a team who seem to be really enjoying their work, and that was definitely the feeling at the Fleece.
After we’d finished Emma showed us round all the spaces available for guests. The traditional Yorkshire taproom and pub we’d enjoyed in November leads through to the restaurant areas which successfully blend the old – history oozing out of all the walls –and the new – stylish comfortable furniture and a pleasing colour palette.

Upstairs is a sumptuous private dining room available to mark special occasions together with a Gin and Champagne bar leading through to a spacious function room, which can accommodate up to 60 day guests and 120 evening guests. The Fleece is like a Tardis – from the outside an attractive country village pub but opening up to reveal all manner of possibilities and options for events and uses, an “atmospheric cavern of intimate and social spaces”.
Emma explained that both set menus and buffet options are available for group dining or for those wanting something bespoke for their special occasion. I’m already imagining celebrating a birthday with my very own Paella Night.
As we left my daughters were imploring us to save the date of their next event, a Gourmet Burger Night on Friday, 27th June. With Emma and her happy team standing by to serve we will, I think, be making regular journeys back. Addingham’s Fleece certainly gets a Gold star from me. n

A SUMMER TASTE SENSATION
The summer season at the Freemasons is all about flavour, celebration and relaxed indulgence, from sunny snacks to sensational set menus in beautifully refreshed surroundings.
Photography: Kaptured By Wayne
There’s something about summer in Wiswell that just hits differently. The village feels a little more golden, the outside patio on the fold buzzes a little longer into the evening and inside the Freemasons, there’s a hum of anticipation as diners settle in for what they know will be something special. Summer is not just a season here, it’s an experience.
The best way to start soaking it all up? The new Summer Set Lunch and Early Supper menus, three exquisite courses plus snacks and their signature bread and butter for just £37.50 per person. Available Wednesday to Saturday, it’s the kind of unhurried indulgence that makes weekday dining feel like a holiday.
If you really want to lean into discovery, Tasting Tuesdays are back. Kicking off at 7pm for £60 per person with an optional wine flight (£45) it’s a multi-course journey that’s somehow both refined and relaxed.

It’s about flavour, but it’s also about fun. Start with their famous beef fat cruffin (well worth the visit alone) before diving
into a Cream of Isle of white tomato soup, white balsamic jellies or Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire fondue. Dishes like the Thirkleby duck shine, every element meticulously considered; honey roast breast and leg steamed dumpling, carrot and orange purée with duck fat carrot – add triple cooked chips again, because once is never enough. Finish this with the showstopping 2000 Feuilles, Viennese chocolate puff pastry, English
IT’S
THE KIND OF UNHURRIED INDULGENCE THAT MAKES
WEEKDAY DINING FEEL LIKE A HOLIDAY
cherries, praline mousseline, Piedmont hazelnuts with Frangelico ice-cream. Come the weekend, Sunday lunch is still the headline act. It’s everything you’d want it to be – proper roasts, with a choice of Hereford beef or Gloucester Old Spot, served with Yorkshire pudding, carrot and swede champ, horseradish puree, roast and creamed potatoes, seasonal greens, cauliflower cheese and roasting juices. Or for something a little different why not try the Nidderdale lamb suet pudding with French style peas, red wine
sauce and triple cooked chips. The sort of plates that makes you glad you didn’t bother cooking at home.
For those after something more casual, the Summer Snack menu is available outdoors –think yakitori chipolatas and yes, more beef fat rosemary cruffins. Grab a cold drink, sit back and let the sounds of summer (and satisfied diners) float through the air.
Inside, recent refurbishments have brought a fresh new classiness to the upstairs dining area – it still feels like the Freemasons you know and love, but with an extra layer of warmth and style. For special occasions the private dining options remain a real draw –perfect for birthdays, special occasions or just getting a group together without worrying about a thing. The team is always happy to help tailor the experience to suit.

For those looking to make a weekend of it, don’t forget the rooms. Just a short walk away, they offer a stylish and comfy stay without having to worry about taxis or long drives home. It’s the perfect excuse to stretch your visit out a little longer, perhaps with a nightcap at the bar and a leisurely breakfast the next morning.
Summer at the Freemasons isn’t about doing anything radically different, it’s about doing what they do best, with a seasonal flourish. Whether you’re settling in for a long lunch, enjoying a relaxed supper or grazing on snacks in the sun, it’s a place where summer always tastes and feels just right. n

Crossley, is set to feature in the exhibition.
“I became interested in Karel Klic once I had identified him as the artist responsible for painting the portrait of my great, great grandfather, Thomas Whittaker. Searching the internet some time back in the 1990s I came across the photograph of Klic in his Accrington studio with my portrait in the background,” explains Richard, who lives in the Ribble Valley.
“Until a recent visit to Lancaster to view another known Karel Klic portrait, the only work of art of Klic’s I had seen, was the portrait in my possession. Klic was a classically trained artist fascinated in capturing likenesses.
“The portrait of Thomas Whittaker in his mayoral robes was painted by Klic in 1892 or 1893. It was passed down through the
CENTENARY EXHIBITION
Richard Crossley who inherited a remarkable portrait by Bohemian artist Karel Klic, is set to lend the painting for a forthcoming exhibition to honour Klic’s contribution to the world of art and print
The Accrington district was home to a host of inventive minds in the 19th century – the Peels, Frederick Steiner, Frederick Gatty, John Mercer and the Bulloughs being just a few names that spring readily to mind – but one who seems to have escaped any recognition is the Czech inventor and artist, Karel Klic.
Klic was a native of Bohemia who, alongside his talent for caricature drawings and portrait painting, invented a process for reproducing high quality images known as photogravure printing. He came to England in 1890 to further develop his invention and it is possible that the potential application of his technique to the calico printing industry was the reason for his arrival in Accrington where he resided with Dr Gerland, a native of Germany, at his home on Blackburn Road.
During his time in Accrington Klic developed a close working relationship with a company in Lancaster owned by the Storey family that produced oil cloth. He would later move to Lancaster and in 1895 the Storeys established the Rembrandt Intaglio Printing Company to exploit the commercial application of Klic’s photogravure method. In the meantime, and in order to finance his stay in Accrington, Klic opened an artist’s studio in the town where he offered his services to the great and good.
From 1890 to 1892 Klic executed a number
of portraits in oils of prominent Accrington people in addition to other commissions of different subject matters. Klic’s work is highly regarded for its detailed brushwork and in his own country he has the status of a national hero in terms of his artistic works and the contribution he made to the development of photogravure printing, which brought art to the masses. Klic returned to his native country in 1897 but made several return visits to the UK before his death in 1926.
THE EXHIBITION ORGANISERS ARE KEEN TO IDENTIFY OTHER WORKS BY KLIC THAT MAY STILL BE HELD BY PEOPLE IN THE UK
To mark the centenary of Klic’s death, a small group of Klic enthusiasts are hoping to mount an exhibition in Lancaster next year to honour his contribution to the world of print and pay tribute to his artistic skills. Although the organisers have already identified much source material for the intended exhibition, they are anxious to include at its centrepiece as many of Klic’s oil paintings as can be traced from his time in Accrington and Lancaster.
One of them, a portrait of Thomas Whittaker, the Mayor of Accrington in the early 1890s, and the great, great grandfather of Richard
Whittaker family and was in possession of my great uncle, James Whittaker when he died in the 1960s. It subsequently passed to his niece, my mother Patricia Crossley, whose mother was Janie Whittaker before her marriage. I acquired the painting in the 1980s.
“I was approached last year by the organisers of the Klic Centenary Exhibition who were made aware of the portrait through Klic’s UK biographer, Roger Farnham, with whom I had some contact a few years ago when I was researching the history of the portrait.
“The exhibition organisers are keen to identify other works by Klic that may still be held by people in the UK.”
Among the exhibition organisers is retired Lancaster University lecturer Dr David Steel, who says: “To date only two such examples have been positively identified, one being a portrait of Sir Thomas Storey of Storey Brothers Printers in Lancaster and the other is of Thomas Whittaker. We would very much like to hear from anyone who may possess a Klic portrait, perhaps handed down from within their family, as was the Whittaker portrait.”
He adds that Klic normally signed his paintings in red, sometimes vertically on the edge of the portrait.
“We are also aware that two of Klic’s works were donated to the Accrington Mechanics Institute in 1920 by local solicitor Samuel Sandeman, one a painting of a pet dog and the other of a coal hewer. If anyone has any knowledge of the fate of these two examples from when the contents of the Institute were dispersed in the 1980s, we would very much appreciate hearing from them.” n

ARE YOU HAVING A
LAUGH?
Mary Lee-Slade has a giggle at The Comedy Rooms in Clitheroe with award-winning comedian and University of Lancashire alumna, Hayley Ellis
The name Hayley Ellis is synonymous with a good time on the comedy circuit. As a support act she’s opened for the likes of Sarah Millican, John Bishop and Jason Manford. As an MC she’s been bestowed with industry awards and as a headliner she’s currently preparing for her third tour, the Silly Mare Tour, set to launch this September. Hayley’s reputation as a first-class comic precedes her, so when I got the opportunity to speak to her at a gig at The Comedy Rooms in Clitheroe, I jumped at the chance.
Taking place every two months at Clitheroe Cricket Club and organised by local comedian, Sarah J-H, The Comedy Rooms is a night of entertainment that will have you laughing so hard that your belly hurts – and with Hayley Ellis headlining, I knew I’d be in for a treat. Featuring alongside three other incredible acts and with food provided by The Authentic Asian Street Food Stall from Clitheroe Market, the stage was set for a laugh a minute.
“I know Sarah J-H from the circuit and was honoured to be asked to perform at The Comedy Rooms. The line-up is fantastic. I’ve met the other acts before and it’s great to see three out of four of the comics are female, especially given that it’s International Women’s Day,” says Hayley. “When I first started in the business, other women were rarely on the same bill as me, so it’s excellent to see more diversity.”
As a woman in the world of comedy, Hayley tells me it’s difficult to juggle a predominantly nightime job with family
life, but she manages to strike a balance with the support of her partner and a commitment to driving home to Liverpool after each gig: “It’s difficult, but really important to me to try to get home after performing. Stand-up is very different to the school run, so the drive allows me to decompress from the rush of adrenaline I get after a show. No matter how many times I perform, that feeling of euphoria never stops.”
SARAH MILLICAN IS ALWAYS SO KIND. SHE’S SO GENEROUS WITH HER TIME AND TOURING WITH HER IS AN ABSOLUTE BLAST
Hayley’s interest in comedy first began when she moved to Manchester, after graduating from university in Preston. Whilst reading Alan Carr’s autobiography, she discovered he had initially enrolled on a comedy course, so she decided to follow the same route: “The course didn’t teach me how to be funny, but it taught me the ins and outs of entering the comedy circuit, writing and developing material. It culminated in a comedy showcase, where I had to make it through five minutes of stand-up without being ‘carded off’ by the audience. It was beyond nerve-racking and it’s all a blur in my memory, but I made it through!”
Seeing Hayley in her element and admiring her effortless wit and natural stage-presence, it’s hard to imagine her suffering the nerves she describes, but she admits that they still rear their head before a show: “I think it’s good to be nervous before a gig. When I have people I know in the audience or it’s a new venue, the nerves are worse than usual.”
Despite this, Hayley comes across as assured and confident – a consummate comedy professional, which is probably why so many
clubs choose her to MC their shows and why she was nominated as Best Compere at the 2025 Chortle Awards and crowned Best MC at the 2025 Comics’ Comic Awards.
“The nominations were lovely – it’s nice to be acknowledged for what you do,” adds Hayley. “Being an MC comes with a pressure to set the tone for the other comics and it’s not an easy job. The Comics’ Comic award was voted for by other comedians, so it means a lot coming from my peers.”
It’s little wonder Hayley has supported so many big names on the scene, most notably Sarah Millican: “Being a support act can be a tough gig, as the audience sometimes hasn’t settled in yet, but Sarah Millican is always so kind. She’s so generous with her time and touring with her is an absolute blast,” said Hayley.
“Sarah is definitely one of my comedy heroes, as are Roisin Conaty and Jason Manford. A lesser-known comic called Andrew Bird is also really inspirational. I learn so much from watching other performers.”
With such a busy diary, it’s difficult to imagine where Hayley has found the time to write her upcoming Silly Mare Tour, but it’s set to open in September and will visit Darwen, Chorley, Blackpool, Manchester, Bradford and Leeds: “There’s no theme and no pathos, it’s just an hour and 20 minutes of silly stories and a good time,” promises Hayley. “Darwen and Chorley always offer a great atmosphere, so I’m really looking forward to coming back to Lancashire.” n

Founded on a passion for performance and a commitment to excellence, Basics Junior Theatre School has become one of the north’s most respected musical theatre schools. With a track record that’s the envy of many, countless students from Basics have gone on to train at the UK’s most prestigious performing arts colleges, including Italia Conti, Arts Educational and Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. These are names synonymous with West End success and Basics students are making their mark on those stages. Indeed, they have numerous former students who have performed in productions such as Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia, Joseph and hosting their own shows on cruises worldwide.
“Our students often say that when they audition for top drama schools, the panels already know Basics. They’ll mention past students, and it’s clear we’ve made a name for ourselves – it really helps open doors,” explains Basics Principal Andy Cooke.
But it’s not just what happens after, that sets Basics apart. The quality of the school’s productions is, quite simply, jaw-dropping. Audiences often leave stunned that these shows, such as previous hits Grease, Sister Act and Les Misérables, are performed entirely by young people aged 14 to 18.
WHERE FUTURES IN THEATRE BEGIN
In the heart of Burnley, something extraordinary is happening. For 40 years, Basics Junior Theatre School has been nurturing young talent, developing not only future stars of the stage but confident, creative individuals ready to shine in all walks of life
With exceptional production values, live orchestras, stunning vocals, powerful storytelling and fabulous staging and costumes, Basics shows are frequently favourably compared to professional theatre.
The next production, Legally Blonde the Musical, will burst onto the stage in October 2025, promising another dazzling spectacle filled with humour, heart and high-energy choreography. With its message of self-belief and determination, it’s the perfect fit for the Basics ethos.
WHETHER A CHILD DREAMS OF THE WEST END OR JUST WANTS TO MAKE FRIENDS AND HAVE FUN, BASICS IS A PLACE WHERE THEY CAN THRIVE
What truly makes Basics special is its belief in the potential of every child. The school takes students from the start of school at age four up to Year 13. It’s no wonder that students travel to Basics from the Ribble Valley, Blackburn and even Manchester. While many students go on to professional careers, Basics is first and foremost about giving young people the tools to believe in themselves: “Confidence, discipline, teamwork and resilience, these are just as important
as learning a harmony or perfecting a dance routine,” says Andy Cooke.
Led by a team of passionate and experienced tutors, the atmosphere is one of encouragement and high expectations. Whether a child dreams of the West End or just wants to make friends and have fun, Basics is a place where they can thrive.
For families in the North West, Basics represents an exceptional opportunity. It’s not just a theatre school – it’s a launchpad for dreams, a training ground for excellence and a community where young talent takes centre stage.
Tickets for Legally Blonde are on sale now –and if past shows are anything to go by, they won’t last long. n

A UNIQUE VISION
Eleanor Sinclair speaks with Gail Bailey about her new business, The Property Experts, and her distinctive approach to buying and selling homes

Eleanor Sinclair is the Ribble Valley’s newest property expert, whose personal approach and meticulous attention to detail sets The Property Experts apart from other agencies.
When Eleanor left her hometown of Glasgow at the age of 17, no one close to her could have predicted the journey that would eventually lead her to the heart of the Ribble Valley: “I’ve lived in the Ribble Valley for over 25 years with my partner Andy, who
I’ve been with for 10 years, and our beloved dog Miley and I truly feel like a local,” Eleanor explains. “I know and love every winding lane, bustling market town and tranquil village green.”
I KNOW AND LOVE EVERY WINDING LANE, BUSTLING MARKET TOWN AND TRANQUIL VILLAGE GREEN
Between them, Eleanor and Andy have raised four grown-up children. Now, with the nest empty, Eleanor is able to devote herself full-time to one of her greatest passions – helping others find their perfect home in the Ribble Valley.
Eleanor’s story is one of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Her passion for interior design first took shape with House Doctors, a business venture that saw her transforming living spaces: “I discovered a real flair and enthusiasm for design, which I then expanded into the world of campervans with Escape Motorhomes and later, to beachfront static caravans through Escape
Holidays,” Eleanor explains. This talent for turning ordinary spaces into inviting retreats not only brought success to these businesses but also paved the way for her dream role – guiding others through the often-daunting process of selling their homes.
Everyone who knows Eleanor can attest to her passion for the area: “I delight in its vibrant market towns, charming villages, cosy cafes and buzzing bars – all set against a backdrop of outstanding natural beauty.”
Eleanor understands that selling a home can be overwhelming, which is why her personal approach is at the core of her business. She is a firm believer in quality over quantity, taking on only a limited number of clients at any one time to ensure each receives her undivided attention, seven days a week, including evenings and weekends: “This unique aspect of my business is extremely important to me. It’s what sets us apart from other estate agencies and lies at the heart of everything we do,” she explains.

Embracing the latest digital marketing tools, The Property Experts offer professional videography, virtual tours and dynamic social media campaigns to showcase each property at its very best. Eleanor also provides in-house mortgage and conveyancing support, streamlining the process from start to finish. When it’s time to welcome buyers, she organises open house events that generate excitement and often result in multiple offers.
“I have bought and sold five of my own homes,” Eleanor says. “I am confident I know exactly how to present a space, so it feels like home for the next owner.” n

IN-HOUSE CONSTRUCTION & INTERIOR MANAGEMENT
Zara Moon Architects deliver a full turnkey service with the benefits of working with one team throughout the lifecycle of a project.
Paul Beneduce, Managing and Construction Director at ZMA explains how this works

We currently have multiple live construction projects across the Ribble Valley and Pendle, ranging from an £800k extension, a £2.5million barn conversion and a £4million super home. Having already delivered the design, planning, building regulations and tendering stages, we are now managing the main contractor along with administering the building contract, providing CDM services and interior design.
Our Rimington project includes a large part subterranean leisure level with swimming
pool, spa and wellness suite, with glazed internal courtyard. The garden level sits on the roof of the underground level and the whole house is built into the hillside.
Getting the details right, paired with complex technical specifications along with managing the construction team is paramount to delivering a coherent scheme. The Rimington project is now at the final finishes stage where tiling is being installed, walls plastered and wall finishes such as limewash and textured plaster are being completed.
Every detailed decision is managed by our team – between myself, Robyn and Rose bringing together construction knowledge, technical regulations and interior design without the complications of having multiple different consultants.
Our Wiswell scheme is also progressing well with the long slim-framed sliding glazed wall

having been recently installed, providing a panoramic view of the garden. This scheme is a large contemporary extension, entering the final stages of the build.
Springwood, our Hurst Green project includes various different elements to the build which are progressing simultaneously. The house is currently being transformed with a full ground floor layout reconfiguration, along with a side extension and wrap around rear extension. The structure steps in from the elevation, which allows the glazing to seamlessly wrap around appearing to float while creating uninterrupted views of the river. Simultaneously the project also includes converting the existing barn into a gym, home office and guest suite. As the barn is a Non-Designated Heritage Asset, being adjacent to Cromwell’s Bridge, the building elements are being catalogued throughout the construction stage.
Rose Peploe, Head of Interior Design, works alongside the contractors and suppliers whilst being an integrated member of the ZMA team – ensuring constant communication between all parties. Rose transforms the architectural designs, taking them to the next level of detail, working directly with the client focusing on the finished interior details.
Award-winning designer Rose, works autonomously with our architects to develop

the technical drawing packages for all aspects of the interior including overall design concept, specifying materials, furniture, lighting, fitted furniture, styling, bathrooms, kitchens and ironmongery. By providing this in-house service, we can ensure the interior design is integrated within the construction method, mechanical and electrical layouts, building regulations and the overall architectural style.

The benefit of curating the interior design in close collaboration with the architectural team is the cohesiveness of the final product and the ability to create a consistent style throughout, ensuring authenticity between the interior and exterior. Working with our clients throughout the project, from the initial design and planning process, gives us the opportunity to understand our clients on a deeper level. We know what matters to them and how they want to live and inhabit spaces. It takes the stress away from our client making the process more enjoyable, they can relax knowing that they have a dedicated and supportive team, working tirelessly to deliver the best project possible on their behalf.
In our Rimington project the overall style direction promotes a calming atmosphere with the use of natural materials, tones and textures. We have featured limewash
paints, textured Terrea-Calce wall finishes and splashes of colour in areas such as the feature master bathroom. The use of metallic and tactile materials in the bar area introduces playful luxury and expresses the client’s personality.
When designing a whole home project, there are so many elements to consider and opportunities to create beautiful interiors,

whilst ensuring these are functional and considered spaces. We are passionate about the final detail, ensuring research and sustainable decisions go into each phase. We curate beautiful collections of timeless, natural materials and statement pieces to bring your home to life, all selected with with longevity and functionality in mind and to reflect the client’s personality. n
If you would like to work with our team on your project, get in touch with us to arrange an initial consultation and we will take it from there.

HIGHLY COMMENDED ARCHITECTURAL MERIT
Zara Moon, RIBA Chartered Architect and Planning Consultant at Zara Moon Architects showcases their project Hyll House, which was shortlisted and finished runner-up in the Manchester Society of Architects Awards

Hyll House is located within the Green Belt, in a small rural hamlet above Whalley village in the Ribble Valley. The hillside site sits within a naturally landscaped setting, with outstanding views whilst being protected by an enclave of trees.
The plot is also within the setting of a Grade II Listed Building, with only traditional rural farmhouses within the locality. The design needed to be sensitively sited to embrace the rural landscape through a contemporary response to the site.
Being located within the Green Belt, the size, height and massing was restricted by an extant planning approval for a stable block. The proposal therefore needed to be designed within the limitations of the previous

approval, whilst simultaneously providing the required accommodation to meet the client’s need. The brief was to create a sustainable architectural home which blended indoor and outdoor living spaces, seamlessly integrating the garden and outward views.

THE BRIEF WAS TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURAL HOME WHICH BLENDED INDOOR AND OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES
The ground floor footprint limit equated to a three-bedroom bungalow with a pitched roof. However, the clients wanted to create a contemporary, wow-factor, forever home with more accommodation, privacy and architectural merit. The proposal incorporated a flat roof to utilise the available volume efficiently, without exceeding the height limit. To achieve this, the orientation was designed to utilise the existing sloping site. The house anchors itself into the banking allowing two levels of accommodation projecting out of the hillside. The orientation flows with the gradient of the hill which allows both levels to meet the ground, providing a physical connection to the
garden at both levels, whilst the master suite is positioned at an elevated level, maintaining privacy.
The home was designed as an ‘upside-downhouse’ with the primary living spaces and master bedroom located on the upper level and the secondary bedrooms, entrance and service spaces located on the lower level.

The design includes a natural stone plinth which grounds the building into the site. The stonework walling draws visitors from the site entrance to the front door, with the wall continuing internally into the hall.
Speaking about the project, a planning officer for Hyndburn Council, said: “The proposal incorporates an attractive design which has commendable architectural merit and is befitting of a rural setting with its effective use of materials and form. The style and use of the surrounding topography ensures that it is a subtle addition to the landscape. Officers have given great weight to the quality and innovation which can raise the bar for design in the area.”
The design incorporates natural stonework and timber ensuring it responds to the immediate context, while the contemporary application of the materials ensures the architecture is distinctly and deliberately different to the listed building. Glazing to both front and rear creates a countryside vista through the home. n
