SCULPTING STORIES FROM WILLOW

For Helena Mellenchip, sculpting with willow isn’t just a profession – it’s a passion, a way of storytelling, as Ali Gudgeon discovers.

Photography: Phil Downy

At 54 and based in St Annes, Helena has spent the past 15 years turning this versatile, sustainable material into remarkable works of art – from fantastical creatures to majestic wildlife – all woven by hand with patience, imagination and a deep love of nature.

Helena’s creative journey started with a willow basket class some 30 years ago

when she lived in Cornwall. Moving back home to Lancashire, she was looking for something to do, a way to connect with her surroundings and her own creativity.

“My journey started with a basket-making class. I never expected to fall in love with the material, but something about the way willow bends and weaves together really captured me from the outset.”

From those first few woven forms, her

curiosity blossomed into a fully-fledged passion. “I was more drawn to the possibilities of sculpture – to creating form, character and life from this natural material.” So, from small, simple baskets, Helena graduated to large-scale sculptural works – creatures and structures that seemed to come alive under her hands.

Helena is largely self-taught, however has picked up much needed skills from other willow teachers. Through trial, patience and pure imagination, she mastered techniques to bring her ambitious designs to life. “These days, I build larger pieces using metal armature for strength, then carefully weave layer upon layer of pre-soaked willow. It’s a slow, thoughtful process, but there’s a moment in each piece when it starts to come alive – and that’s what keeps me going.”

I LOVE MAKING CREATURES – WEIRD AND WONDERFUL THINGS AND LETTING MY IMAGINATION RUN WILD

Some of her most remarkable works have become well-known landmarks in their own right. She sculpted a dramatic 10-foot-tall elephant. Then there’s Gromit on a scooter –an amazing piece that’s actually made with real Lambretta handlebars – and a giant orangutan, a dramatic form that highlights her ability to capture character and movement in a medium made from sticks.

Helena finds her greatest inspiration in the natural world – in creatures, fantastical forms and the rich traditions of myth and legend. “I love making creatures – weird and wonderful things and letting my imagination run wild.” Whether it’s a pair of giant boxing hares, a delicate heron or something more

fantastical, each piece carries a spark of magic – a feeling that it might come alive if you turned your back for a moment.

The sculptures are lovingly created over time, often taking months. The Gromit piece, for example, required a considerable amount of welding and careful framing as it is actually two sculptures. “My scooterloving other half was a huge help with that – we were able to use a set of genuine Lambretta handlebars to make it more

IT’S A SLOW, THOUGHTFUL PROCESS, BUT THERE’S A MOMENT IN EACH PIECE WHEN IT STARTS TO COME ALIVE – AND THAT’S WHAT KEEPS ME GOING

realistic.” The finished article took around three months overall. The 10-foot-tall elephant was a particular triumph. “I hadn’t got a garage at the time – I made it without much space but it turned out to be the piece I’m most proud of.”

Helena’s materials come from Somerset, where the willow is grown and cut each year and then regrows, making it a fully renewable and eco-friendly medium. She

also sources green willow from a grower in Leyland, who produces it for biofuel. “I buy the willow to size and store it in my garage to keep it dry. The sticks need to be soaked to become pliable – it’s a lengthy process –but it’s worth it when you see a piece come together.”

a teacher and a community builder, offering workshops at Lytham Hall and mentoring people with special needs in her day job.

“I love my job; it’s very rewarding. I also love teaching and passing on my skills, seeing people connect with the material in their own way in the basket workshops.”

Helena’s future is as rich and ambitious as her imagination. She has a giant octopus and a heron on the commission list and a potential Manchester client who’s interested in a large indoor piece. She’s also thinking about putting on more classes at Lytham Hall, letting more people experience the magic of working with their hands and their imagination.

IT’S A PRIVILEGE TO DO WHAT I LOVE. WHETHER IT’S A BIG PUBLIC PIECE OR SOMETHING MORE INTIMATE

Whether she’s sculpting a mythical creature or a majestic heron, Helena’s art is a marriage of imagination, patience and a deep understanding of her material. Her sculptures bring a bit of wilderness into our daily spaces, reconnecting us with nature and adding character and curiosity to the world around us.

Helena adds: “It’s a privilege to do what I love. Whether it’s a big public piece or something more intimate, I feel fortunate to be able to bring these creations to life. The material itself guides me – it’s a collaboration – and that’s what makes it so magical.”

Helena currently has eight sculptures on show at a sculpture trail at Lytham Hall. These include Gromit on a scooter, a giant owl, the boxing hares and an orangutan which can be found swinging from the branch of a tree in the hall’s grounds. Well worth a visit – these are free to visit until September (car parking charges apply). n

Bannister Hall launches EverythingPlants.co.uk sparking a new era in garden inspiration

This July, the world of British gardening takes an elegant leap forward with the launch of EverythingPlants.co.uk, a breathtakingly beautiful new online destination for anyone with a passion for exquisite outdoor spaces. Brought to you by Bannister Hall Landscaping Design, Materials and Plants Centre, the new site is more than just a shop – it’s a digital gardening repository of planting information, curated by a business with over 30 years of horticultural expertise.

Coinciding with the opening of their new state-of-the-art Landscaping Design Centre at Potter Lane, Higher Walton, just outside

Preston, the launch marks a significant milestone in Bannister Hall’s 30-year journey of greening the nation. Known for its exceptional plants, professional-grade materials and thoughtful, tailored service, Bannister Hall has long been a trusted supplier to everyone from award-winning Chelsea Flower Show designers to local authorities, national housebuilders and, of course, discerning private homeowners.

Now, with EverythingPlants.co.uk, their horticultural magic is available to all –delivered straight to your door nationwide, with specialist vehicles and handled with the care only a nursery-grown product deserves.

A VISUAL FEAST FOR THE MODERN GARDENER

Designed with aesthetics and ease in mind, the website is nothing short of a garden designer’s dream. The online experience is driven by rich, quality photography, allowing users to browse thousands of plants and materials with stunning visual detail. You can see exactly what you’re buying – whether it’s the height and shape of a pleached hornbeam, the delicate silvered foliage of a 100-year-old olive tree or the sculptural perfection of spiral bay topiary. Perhaps you need 50 metres of a fully grown hedgerow, or luscious fruit trees – no problem at all!

Searching for something specific? The site offers simple filters to browse by colour palette, height, growth rate, sun or shade tolerance, flowering season and more. Want

a pollinator-friendly palette for a southfacing terrace, or a formal evergreen screen for a city garden? It’s all there curated and categorised with clarity and care. Moreover, the site provides instant access to trained online horticulturalists, ready to impart their green-fingered wisdom to help you make the right choice for your outdoor sanctuary.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR A BEAUTIFUL GARDEN

True to its name, EverythingPlants.co.uk provides not only an exceptional selection of trees, shrubs, perennials and topiary, but also a full range of landscaping materials –from fertilisers, topsoil and compost, to decorative aggregates and bark mulches. Bannister Hall’s commitment to quality is not just skin-deep. The plants themselves are either grown at one of the company’s three privately owned nurseries in Lancashire, or carefully sourced via a trusted European network. That means if you’re dreaming of something more architectural like a mature specimen acer, a cloud-pruned ilex, or a grand wisteria in full bloom, Bannister Hall can have it sourced and delivered within a matter of days.

Whether your style leans toward lush Mediterranean planting, romantic English herbaceous borders, or clean-lined

contemporary minimalism, you’ll find both inspiration and substance here.

SEASONALITY MEETS SMART SHOPPING

As the height of summer arrives, the garden is at its most abundant. July and August bring with them clouds of lavender, towering hydrangeas, echinacea, salvia, crocosmia, and agapanthus in full bloom. These are the months of fragrance, form and pollinators. EverythingPlants.co.uk offers detailed growing guides for each, covering pruning tips, soil preferences and seasonal care advice – a digital horticultural masterclass, freely accessible to all.

And for those thinking ahead, the site even includes a forward-planning feature so you can pre-order bare root and root ball hedging, often at a preferential price, for autumn delivery. The bare root season begins in November and it’s one of the best times to invest in longer hedging runs, large-scale planting projects or cost-effective multibuys, all of which are seamlessly handled via the site.

The platform also allows customers to select plant root types – whether pot-grown, root ball or bare root, ensuring buyers have full visibility on price points and what’s best for their garden and the season.

BUILT FOR DESIGNERS –LOVED BY HOMEOWNERS

While the site is undoubtedly a joy for enthusiastic amateurs, it’s also been meticulously designed to also meet the needs of professional garden designers and landscapers. Trade login accounts, volume discounts and fast site delivery ensure that Bannister Hall’s longstanding relationship with the trade community is preserved and enhanced in this new digital format.

It’s this balance between high-end retail elegance and professional-grade substance, that sets EverythingPlants.co.uk apart. The website doesn’t just sell plants, it brings confidence, clarity and a level of designfocused usability that makes it a powerful tool for anyone serious about creating beautiful outdoor environments.

A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE

With over 30 years of horticultural heritage, Bannister Hall’s new chapter is a celebration of everything it has stood for – quality, service and a deep knowledge of plants. SOAK UP THE SUMMER SUN

July is the month for you to get out and enjoy your garden whether it’s an open area in the country or a more compact urban space

The lazy, hazy days of summer are best spent enjoying the plants that you have lovingly nurtured and cared for over the past months that are now in full flower.

You do need to keep an eye on watering this month to make sure your garden doesn’t suffer from dehydration, but make sure you are water-wise. You can conserve water and help plants in the summer by moving pots out of full sun into the shade where possible. Some tips for good watering include using water-retaining gel in containers, water the area directly above the roots of plants, use grey water from washing up and a good watering less frequently is better than watering little and often.

Another way to conserve water and moisture is to ensure that there is good ground cover planting in beds and borders – it acts like a mulch helping to suppress weeds and lock in soil moisture and nutrients. Hardy geraniums, campanula and creeping herbs such as thyme are easy growing ground cover plants as are strawberries.

Using strawberries offers a variety of benefits to both plants and gardeners. In addition to providing delicious fruit, their shallow root system helps prevent soil compaction and also improves soil structure whilst their white and

pink flowers attract beneficial pollinators. Strawberries like well-draining and fertile soil and thrive in full sun but can also do well in partial shade. They require consistent moisture, especially during flowering and fruiting so need to be watered regularly.

IF I HAD MY WAY, I’D REMOVE JANUARY FROM THE CALENDAR ALTOGETHER AND HAVE AN EXTRA JULY INSTEAD

Roald Dahl

There are several different types of strawberry plants – early, mid and late summer varieties, perpetual strawberries and alpines – with popular varieties including Cambridge Favourite – best known and most reliable, producing medium-sized, orange-

thousands of years to calm anxiety and settle stomachs. People in ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt used dried chamomile flowers and their essential oils as a medicinal herb. There is some evidence that chamomile can ease anxiety and maybe even help you sleep better. n

TOP TIPS FOR JULY FROM THE RHS:

• Deadhead, feed and water for a long-lasting show of flowers

• Clear algae, blanket weed and debris from ponds and keep topped up

• Don’t worry if the lawn goes brown, it will bounce back once it rains

• Water tubs and new plants if dry, but be water-wise

• Organise care for houseplants while on holiday

• Check for pests – especially aphids

• Pick courgettes before they become marrows

• Start picking tomatoes as they ripen and continue to feed and water

• Plant out leeks and brassicas for a winter harvest

• Give regular liquid feed to fruit or veg growing in containers

AUTHENTICITY & GRANDEUR

This sophisticated apartment has been designed with simplicity in mind presenting the ultimate in understated elegance

Located in one of the most famous design capitals, in the heart of Lombardy, Italy, this contemporary sophisticated apartment has been transformed by Ashley Gadeova, for Caffe Latte and Covet House.

Sublime yet cosy, it is divided into three fundamental areas in an open plan regime, to provide the greatest comfort and wellbeing, based on straight and elegant lines.

As soon as you enter there is a majestic kitchen in white and marble tones, a kitchen island and a Liberty small pendant for sophisticated lighting.

Large and spacious, the dining room is the ideal example of minimalism and functionality with an Ezra dining table chosen for its soft mid-century inspiration and Moka dining chairs, from Caffe Latte.

The nature-inspired lighting in the centre, with its trendy biophilic design that enhances the ambience, adds a touch of

luxury to the mix.

As for the main area of the apartment, the living room is more conventional, presenting itself in a typical modern classic style, without ever failing to comply with the principle of functionality and wellbeing that guides all interiors.

Through a curvilinear design, the Odette sofa delivers elegance and relaxation, along with a Demitasse armchair, in a minimalist, unique design.

SIMPLICITY, CARRIED TO AN EXTREME, BECOMES ELEGANCE

The simplicity offers great contrast to the grandeur of this apartment which has been designed by Gadeova in collaboration with Caffe Latte and Covet House, who are expanding horizons, giving us a privileged view of Milan’s modern sophistication and authenticity.

Caffe Latte’s designs bring ergonomics and functionality to any room, with a modern minimalist approach that complements other aesthetics with the use of a neutral colour palette, ultimately presenting a design that appeals to all. n

KEEPING YOUR COOL

How to keep your home cool in the summer (yes, it does get hot!)

Let’s be honest, British homes are brilliant at keeping the heat in. Great in winter, not so great when summer decides to show up with a heatwave (and no, opening the fridge door doesn’t count as air con).

If you’ve found yourself melting on the sofa or tossing and turning through sweaty nights, here are some simple, effective tips to keep your home cool without racking up the energy bill.

1. Close the curtains during the day It might feel counterintuitive, but keeping your curtains or blinds closed, especially on south-facing windows, can make a big difference. Sunlight streaming in = greenhouse effect. Blackout blinds or lightcoloured thermal curtains work a treat at reflecting heat.

2. Open windows… at the right time Fresh air is great, but timing is everything.

Keep windows shut during the hottest parts of the day (usually between 11am and 4pm), then throw them open in the evening and early morning to let cooler air circulate. Creating a cross-breeze by opening windows on opposite sides of your home can work wonders.

3. Switch off unnecessary tech TVs, laptops and even lightbulbs give off heat. If you’re not using them, turn them off. And consider swapping to LED bulbs if you haven’t already, they stay much cooler than traditional ones and save energy too.

4. Ditch the oven

Hot food sounds far less appealing when your kitchen feels like a sauna. Summer’s the perfect time for cold dishes, BBQs (when the weather allows), or quick meals that don’t involve heating the whole house. Your fan oven isn’t your friend in July and August.

5. Invest in a decent fan

While we don’t all have air con (and honestly, do we need it?), a good fan can make a real difference, especially at night. Place a bowl of ice or frozen water bottles in front of it for a makeshift cooling system. It’s basic physics, but it works.

6. Get clever with bedding

Swap heavy duvets for breathable cotton sheets or a summer-weight duvet. Some people even sleep with a damp flannel or cooling pillowcase in hot weather. It’s not glamorous, but when it’s 26°C at midnight, needs must.

7. Keep internal doors open

This helps air move freely through your home, particularly in the evenings when you’re trying to draw cooler air in. Just be mindful if you have pets or children.

UK summers might be unpredictable, but when the heat does hit, a few small tweaks can keep your home a lot more comfortable. No air con needed, just a bit of know-how and maybe a few strategically placed fans. n

NEXT GENERATION

It’s time to embrace the great British summer and all that entails –whether it’s enjoying homemade pizza in the bright sunshine or cosying up on cool evenings around the fire

Master British stove maker ESSE has unveiled this summer’s most versatile must-have –a stunning, next-generation, outdoor garden stove complete with pizza oven.

Along with welcome warmth and a clear view of the flames, al fresco diners can enjoy mouth-watering pizzas in just two minutes, with authentic wood-fired flavour. The rectangular cooking chamber above the firebox measures 410mm wide x 395mm depth – ideal for a 10-slice 14-inch sharing pizza.

As the UK’s oldest stove manufacturer, established in 1854, ESSE understands the British stove market and the changeable British seasons. This practical garden stove comes complete with wheels to move positions and escape the wetter weather, as well as being easily stored away if required.

Unlike stone-built pizza ovens, this portable model means you can pick the perfect spot for it depending on your mood or the position of the sun – you might opt for pizzas on the patio or long leisurely lunches on the lawn.

It comes with a 1000mm length flue pipe to take smoke up away from garden gatherings and has a built-in rear air slide to conveniently control the burn rate.

The wood-fired pizza oven provides a sustainable and traditional way of cooking, without hassle. The steel plate’s heat retention and distribution means you can achieve restaurant-quality pizzas with an authentic wood-fired flavour and deliciously charred crust, while the high temperatures also burn off residue to leave a clean cooking surface for each use.

ESSE Director Peter Ashby explains: “We’re very proud of our new garden stove with pizza oven because it packs so many practical benefits into an outdoor stove that’s incredibly stylish in its own right. It’s a great focal point for any garden or terrace and is already proving equally popular with food lovers and garden enthusiasts. I don’t think outdoor cooking has ever looked this good!”

THIS PORTABLE MODEL MEANS YOU CAN PICK THE PERFECT SPOT –YOU MIGHT OPT FOR PIZZAS ON THE PATIO OR LONG LEISURELY LUNCHES ON THE LAWN

Even when the nights begin to draw in again, this stove allows you to enjoy more of the great outdoors with its flickering flame pattern, welcome warmth and plenty of surface space for hot drinks. The traditional stove-style door means it can be enjoyed all year round.

The British-built Esse garden stove features a grate log bed with ash pan, an optional retrofit BBQ grill and is supplied complete with 1000mm length flue pipe and heat-proof leather mitt. n

Start small. One of the most effective tools for overcoming shame is self-compassion. Developed by researcher Dr Kristin Neff, self-compassion involves three main components:

Self-kindness: Treating yourself with care and understanding rather than harsh criticism.

Common humanity: Recognising that suffering and imperfection are part of the shared human experience.

Mindfulness: Noticing and allowing emotions without suppressing or exaggerating them. Admit that mistakes are part of learning. Developing this kind inner voice can change how you relate to your shame. Shame often

MIND MATTERS

Therapeutic coach Lynn Scholes explains how, with support and advice, we can heal the wounds of shame

Shame is a deeply uncomfortable and powerful emotion. Unlike guilt, which is tied to specific actions, shame affects how we see ourselves. It whispers: ‘You are bad,’ rather than: ‘You did something bad’. Left unaddressed, shame can lead to anxiety, depression, low self-worth and disconnection from others.

But the good news is, shame is not permanent –it can be understood, confronted and transformed. The first step to dealing with shame is understanding what it is and where it comes from. Shame often originates in childhood, stemming from experiences where we were criticised, rejected or made to feel unworthy. Traumas, social comparison, cultural expectations and even seemingly small moments of embarrassment can all contribute to a lasting sense of shame.

Shame thrives in secrecy. It makes us feel isolated, as if we’re uniquely flawed. But in reality, everyone experiences shame. Recognising its universality can begin to loosen its grip. One of the most important steps in addressing shame is learning to recognise your personal shame triggers. These might include:

• Feeling left out or excluded

• Making a mistake at work or in relationships

• Failing to meet your or others’ expectations

• Body image or appearance concerns

• Financial struggles or perceived inadequacies Pay attention to the physical sensations (tight chest, flushed face), thoughts (feeling worthless) and behaviours (withdrawing, apologising excessively) that accompany your shame responses. Journaling about these can help uncover patterns and contexts. As shame grows in silence, speaking about it can be incredibly healing. Sharing your experiences with someone you trust can help release the burden. Empathy is shame’s antidote. When someone responds to your vulnerability with compassion rather than judgment, it challenges the belief that you are unworthy. Working with a therapeutic coach with whom you have formed a trusting relationship can be the support you need to open up and share the shame. Whether with a friend or a professional you don’t need to overshare or disclose everything at once.

rests on the distorted belief that you’re not loveable or you always mess things up. These thoughts may feel true, but that doesn’t make them accurate. Your shame does not define you. Start by identifying your core shame beliefs. Where did they come from? Are they really yours, or were they imposed by others? Then, gently challenge them.

Shame can also stem from environments or relationships that reinforce it. If certain people consistently belittle you, it’s okay to set boundaries or even distance yourself. You deserve to be around people who see your worth and treat you with respect. Healing from shame often involves creating safer emotional spaces for yourself.

In her research, Dr. Brené Brown found that people who live with a strong sense of worthiness are those who embrace vulnerability. They are willing to be seen, imperfections and all. Each time you risk vulnerability –a heartfelt conversation, sharing your art, asking for help – you reclaim a bit of yourself from the grip of shame. Many people struggle with shame because they hold themselves to impossible standards. Perfectionism isn’t a sign of excellence, it’s a shield against the fear of not being good enough. Instead of striving for perfection, aim for growth. Allow yourself to be a work in progress. Celebrate small wins. Learn from mistakes without condemning yourself. n

REVOLUTIONARY RELIEF FOR KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS

Are you struggling with knee osteoarthritis? There’s a groundbreaking, non-surgical treatment now available at Spire Fylde Coast Hospital that is redefining treatment for patients living with knee pain

Revolutionary Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. While joint replacement surgery is effective, it is also a major invasive procedure with a lengthy recovery period. But now, there’s an alternative.

Introducing Arthrosamid®

Arthrosamid® is a non-biodegradable injectable polyacrylamide hydrogel (2.5 per cent iPAAG) implant consisting of 2.5 per cent cross-linked polyacrylamide and 97.5 per cent water. It is administered via a simple, one-step procedure performed under local anaesthesia by a qualified physician, such as an orthopaedic surgeon or rheumatologist – ensuring you’re in and out of the clinic the same day. Arthrosamid® is proven to maintain a significant, long-lasting reduction in knee OA pain – even five years post-treatment.

How does Arthrosamid® work?

Arthrosamid® is the first and only permanent injectable implant that integrates with the knee’s synovial tissue, forming a scaffold that softens and increases tissue elasticity. This leads to decreased joint stiffness, reduced pain, and improved knee function.

Proven Results

Over 20 years of research and development. Safe and effective for its intended use, even five years post-treatment.

Around 1,200,000 syringes of 2.5 per cent iPAAG have been made for human use.

What do the experts say?

Mr Javed: “As an orthopaedic surgeon, I’m thrilled to offer Arthrosamid, a cutting-edge hydrogel treatment for knee pain. This biocompatible, non-absorbable gel is injected into the knee to cushion and lubricate the joint, providing lasting relief from osteoarthritis or degenerative conditions. Unlike temporary solutions, Arthrosamid integrates with your joint tissues, promoting

stability and reducing inflammation without surgery. My patients experience improved mobility, less pain and quicker return to daily activities with this safe, effective and minimally invasive procedure.”

To book an appointment for Mr Javed call Christina Brown 07973 983335 or email: cbrown.medsec@gmail.com

Mr Shah: “As an orthopaedic surgeon, I use Arthrosamid for patients with knee osteoarthritis because it offers a unique, long-lasting solution. This non-biodegradable hydrogel integrates with the synovial tissue, providing sustained cushioning and reducing pain and inflammation, often for several years with a single injection. I typically recommend Arthrosamid for patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis who haven’t found sufficient relief from other non-surgical treatments like physiotherapy or standard injections, or for those wishing to delay or avoid knee replacement surgery. It’s a valuable option for improving quality of life and maintaining activity levels on appropriately selected individuals.” n

NEW HORIZONS FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH

Spire Fylde

Coast Hospital

delivers high-quality, rapid-access private care in a welcoming, modern environment and is pioneering women’s health technology with clinical excellence, writes Katie Hammond

Since the introduction of vNOTES (Vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery), a growing number of gynaecologists worldwide are adopting the technique to offer women safer, scarless and faster alternatives to traditional surgery. Consultant Gynaecologist Mr Eric Mutema, based at Spire Fylde Coast Hospital, tells us more about surgical techniques which are revolutionising the world of women’s health:

Tell us more about your clinical area of expertise

“I’m a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a special interest in Urogynaecology. With evidence favouring better recovery and outcomes from day-case

surgery, I have spearheaded day-case pelvic floor surgery and vaginal hysterectomy practice within my region since becoming a consultant.”

How would you describe your professional ethos?

“I was one of the first gynaecologists to offer this service within the NHS and have provided it privately since 2023.

“My decision to specialise in vNOTES was in pursuit of safer, more patient-friendly surgical options which minimise trauma and maximise recovery.”

What are the most common procedures you undertake and what are their clinical advantages?

“Through vNOTES, I perform hysterectomies, ovarian cyst removals and sterilisations –all without the need for incisions through the abdominal wall.

“vNOTES is as safe as traditional laparoscopy or vaginal surgery, but the short-term recovery is significantly faster, leaving no visible scars. It also allows for the removal of ovaries during a hysterectomy – something not safely achievable via traditional vaginal surgery.”

Does vNOTES have benefits for other categories of patients and are there any risk areas?

“vNOTES has a useful role in gender

affirmation surgeries, expanding its utility to support a wider range of patients.

“Whilst it is safe for many, it is often ideal for women who would otherwise face difficult laparoscopic or vaginal procedures, for example, obese women or nulliparous women who have not given birth vaginally and can benefit from vNOTES, where other options may be limited or carry more risk.”

Why is patient education so central to your approach to each individual case?

“Guiding patients through informed decisions is crucial. We have a full clinical discussion about all available routes of hysterectomy, including their risks and benefits. The medical community agrees that the vaginal route is safest, but not all gynaecologists are trained in, or comfortable with offering it.”

How do you reassure patients concerns specifically about the vaginal procedure route?

“I like to start with the facts. Ninety two percent of my patients are discharged on the same day as receiving treatment. We offer strong analgesia, but most don’t need it –this aligns with evidence showing faster short-term recovery.”

What, in your opinion, is the future of vNOTES?

“There’s growing expertise in Europe and North America, but the UK is currently lagging behind. As evidence continues to grow and patients demand better outcomes, I believe vNOTES will become the gold standard in gynaecological surgery.” n

And this is where eating seasonally really matters. Seasonal fruits and vegetables aren’t just tastier, they’re often more nutrient-dense as they’re fresher and haven’t been stored. Nutrients break down over time, so eating foods in season can benefit your body the most. And yes, this absolutely can show in your skin, energy and how your gut feels.

MY TOP FIVE SEASONAL

FRUIT & VEG FOR JULY & AUGUST:

Watermelon – Super hydrating and rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that supports skin health.

Cucumber – Cooling, anti-inflammatory and great raw or infused in water.

Tomatoes – Packed with vitamin C and perfect for collagen support and skin repair.

NUTRITION WITH KELI

Raspberries – High in fibre and antioxidants plus they are amazing for digestion and supporting a healthy gut microbiome.

Let’s be honest, when a holiday comes up, it’s not just about sorting flights and planning outfits (though I won’t lie that part is fun). It can also kick off that little internal dialogue: ‘Okay, it’s time to feel good in my skin’. And I totally get it. So many of us jump straight to restriction or last-minute crash eating plans. But here’s the thing – the real results that last and actually make you feel good, start with what you’re eating.

I’ve just come back from a girls’ trip to Ibiza, and as always, there was that bit of pre-holiday pressure to get in shape. But now that I understand how to support my

body properly with food, I did the opposite of what I used to. I increased my protein, mainly from fish and plants for easier digestion, added more complex carbs and upped my fibre. This, combined with training, helped me train harder, recover faster, build lean muscle and feel more energised in my workouts. But it wasn’t just about the gym results; I could see the difference in my skin and feel it in my digestion. That’s the joy of working with your body instead of against it.

Courgettes – Light, versatile and easy to digest. Ideal for grilling.

Water-rich foods like these, plus celery and herbal teas, not only hydrate you but help keep digestion smooth and reduce puffiness or bloating. I always think of them as internal skincare.

The bonus? Confidence. What I love most about eating this way is how it makes you feel. When your gut is thriving, everything upgrades. Your mood lifts, energy flows and inner confidence starts to shine. It’s not just about clearer skin or stronger training sessions, it’s how you carry yourself and show up. You don’t need restriction, you need nourishment. So, this summer, fuel yourself with intention and let your glow speak loud. n

Non-invasive with minimal downtime

NOSE KNOW HOW

Rhinophyma, a severe form of rosacea, can impact confidence and quality of life. Discover Laser in Burnley offers UltraPulse CO2 laser treatment to restore natural contours and self-assurance

Characterised by thickened, uneven skin on the nose, rhinophyma often develops from untreated or severe rosacea. Commonly affecting men over 40, it can leave anyone feeling self-conscious and unsure where to turn.

Dr Miguel Montero at Discover Laser in Burnley offers life-changing treatments for rhinophyma using the UltraPulse CO2 laser, a powerful tool in dermatology.

Rhinophyma typically presents as a bulbous, enlarged nose with thickened skin and visible pores. In advanced cases, the excess tissue can obstruct nasal airflow, causing functional and aesthetic concerns.

Linked to advanced or untreated rosacea, it develops gradually and, like rosacea, can be triggered by sun exposure, alcohol, spicy foods or stress. While early medication intervention can help control rosacea, rhinophyma often requires a more targeted approach to address the thickened tissue and restore the nose’s natural shape.

Dr Montero explains how the UltraPulse CO2 laser has revolutionised the treatment of rhinophyma at his clinic: “UltraPulse is ideal for rhinophyma because it allows us to target thickened areas of the skin with incredible accuracy. The results are not just aesthetic – treatment can relieve discomfort and even improve breathing in severe cases.

“Precise and safe, the advanced laser technology removes excess tissue layer by layer, smoothing and reshaping the skin while preserving healthy underlying structures.

“Unlike surgery, laser treatment is minimally invasive with less downtime,

allowing our patients to return to normal routines within a week.”

Patients treated at Discover Laser often describe their journey as nothing short of transformative:

“The shape of my nose changed over 10 years, becoming lumpy and wider. I had seen a dermatologist who prescribed topical treatments for the redness, but they didn’t improve the lumpiness. I was concerned when I looked further into what rhinophyma can do to people. I didn’t want my nose to become an embarrassment.

“When I spoke to Dr Montero about treatment, I told him I wanted a smooth, narrower nose. He talked me through the treatment and answered my questions.

“My biggest fear was how much pain I’d have during treatment and after, but I followed the post-care instructions to the letter and had none. The whole experience was terrific from beginning to end and I’m 100% happy with the results. My confidence has come back and my fears of what might happen have gone.

“If you’re considering having treatment for rhinophyma, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dr Montero and UltraPulse.”

Discover Laser is a trusted destination for advanced dermatological skin care in the North West. If you or someone you know is living with rhinophyma, there’s no need to feel resigned to the condition. With expert care and advanced laser treatments, Discover Laser can help restore both appearance and confidence.

To book your ROSACEA CONSULTATION with Dr Montero, call Discover Laser’s team on 01282 420886

MOUTH-BODY CONNECTION

Dental specialists Renovo reveal that oral health is not just connected to your body health – it is your body health

When you think about inflammation, you might imagine sore joints or aching muscles. But what if the real source was hiding in your mouth – quietly fuelling disease throughout your body?

Revolutionising dentistry, leading private practice Renovo has always been at the forefront of the industry. They reveal that your mouth could be the hidden source of inflammation and is the key to total overall health.

Here’s what most people don’t realise:

• 90 per cent of people have gum disease, often without obvious symptoms.

• Oral bacteria can trigger up to 50 per cent

of heart attacks and strokes.

• Gum disease makes you 70 per cent more likely to develop Alzheimer’s.

• 95 per cent of diabetics also suffer from gum disease.

• Even cancer, infertility, autoimmune diseases and high blood pressure have been linked to oral bacteria and chronic inflammation.

Dr Usman Riaz, who heads up the Renovo team, explains: “Inflammation is at the root of almost every major disease and your mouth is one of the most overlooked sources.”

WE’RE NOT JUST FIXING TEETH. WE’RE SUPPORTING YOUR WHOLE BODY HEALTH

THE SCIENCE: FROM MOUTH TO BODY

Research shows that porphyromonas gingivalis, the bacteria behind gum disease, has been found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. In animal studies, these bacteria caused:

• Brain inflammation

• Neuron damage

• Alzheimer’s-like symptoms When scientists blocked these bacterial

toxins, inflammation reduced and neurons began to heal. But the mouth doesn’t just connect to your heart and brain, it connects to – and directly shapes – your entire body health.

“Every swallow of saliva carries bacteria from your mouth throughout your system,” says Dr Riaz. “Your oral microbiome influences your immune system, metabolic health and inflammation pathways. If your mouth harbours harmful bacteria, they disrupt immune balance and fuel chronic inflammation.”

WHY THIS MATTERS

When your gums are inflamed, bacteria and toxins enter your bloodstream every day. This causes chronic low-grade inflammation.

“It’s like having a leaking toxic tap in your mouth, fuelling inflammation throughout your body 24/7,” adds Dr Riaz. “If you want to heal your body, you must start with your mouth. Oral health is body health.”

RENOVO DENTAL: BEYOND TRADITIONAL DENTISTRY

At Renovo Dental, they don’t guess – they test. Using advanced non-invasive saliva testing, the team identifies specific bacterial burdens causing hidden inflammation, with a focus on restoring full body health through oral health optimisation.

Dr Riaz says: “We focus on uncovering the root causes of disease and many of those causes begin in the mouth, impacting the entire body and immune system.”

THE SILENT THREAT OF OUTDATED DENTAL WORK

Beyond gum disease, old dental restorations can silently fuel inflammation. Fillings, crowns and implants degrade over time, leaking metals and toxins into gums and bone, triggering immune reactions and systemic inflammation.

REVISION DENTISTRY: HEALING THE MOUTH TO HEAL THE BODY

Dr Riaz specialises in revision dentistry, removing old, toxic restorations and replacing them with biocompatible materials that protect immune health, reduce inflammation and support overall body integrity.

“We’re not just fixing teeth. We’re supporting your whole body health,” he says. “Your mouth is the gateway to your entire

body health. Stop treating symptoms –start fixing the root causes. Your health deserves that.”

YOUR MOUTH IS THE GATEWAY TO YOUR ENTIRE BODY HEALTH. STOP TREATING SYMPTOMS –START FIXING THE ROOT CAUSES. YOUR HEALTH DESERVES THAT

WHY THIS MATTERS

• Oral health = body health = systemic health

• Oral bacteria = body inflammation

• Gum inflammation = chronic body inflammation

• Healthy mouth = healthier heart, brain, immune system and body

Renovo is one of the very few practices in the UK to introduce biomimetic techniques and materials. Fractured or damaged teeth can be restored by using biomimetic materials to build them up – the materials and techniques ensure the restorative work can last for decades.

“This is micro-invasive dentistry that preserves as much of the tooth structure as possible by using scientifically developed, bio-compatible, metal-free materials,” says Dr Riaz. “These latest advances in dental technology have changed the way we view restorative dentistry.”

For nervous patients the biomimetic approach will revolutionise the way they view a visit to their dental practice. For the generation that are now experiencing failing teeth and receding gums, where in the past removal of teeth was the only answer, bonding technology and new bio-materials along with gum restoration, has given damaged teeth a new lease of life.

By adopting these latest biomimetic philosophies and having all the specialist techniques and materials available makes Renovo pioneers in their approach to dentistry. Sustaining the longevity of teeth is the primary aim of Dr Usman Riaz and his specialist in-house team at Renovo Dental.

“In very few visits patients can be transformed and because of the unique technology available to us, they leave with a bespoke smile that has longevity.

“It really is transformative dentistry. Your mouth is the gateway to your entire body health. Stop treating symptoms – start fixing the root causes. Your health deserves that.’’ n

COACHING FOR A HEALTHIER YOU

Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned athlete, the dedicated team at Ribby Hall is here to support your journey with personalised advice, motivation and a focus on safe, effective results. Every member benefits from a four-stage induction process, ensuring instructors can craft a bespoke exercise programme perfectly tailored to your individual fitness goals. Whether you’re focused on cardio, resistance training, or free weights, or seeking personalised guidance through

personal training, you’ll find everything you need to thrive.

And if you’re after a more holistic approach to overall health and wellbeing, Ribby Hall offers health coaching. Natalie Westgate is a qualified Health & Wellness Coach (HCA Diploma) at Ribby Hall and we spoke to Natalie to find out more.

How does health coaching work?

Health coaches support, educate and encourage. We create accountability for action and regularly review and acknowledge progress. Health coaches help clients identify and explore any barriers they are facing, help them examine their life and plan to change behaviours, gain confidence, re-frame thinking patterns and grow as a person. Sessions are solution focused, empowering and keep clients moving in the right direction towards their realistic goals. We offer a complimentary 30-minute discovery session discussing any medical aspects that require addressing first by a medical professional and what the course offers. We then offer a subsidised 6-week package to get them started on this exciting journey.

Examples of coaching

1. Vital improvements to diet

2. How to create a new exercise and fitness regime

3. Lose/gain weight

4. Increase confidence

5. Improve sleep

Who can benefit from health coaching?

Anyone who is willing to address what is not going right in their lives right now or has tried things in the past to live a healthier way of living but not been successful. This could be due to setting unrealistic goals or they may have failed with their day-to-day nutrition choices. Health coaching is for anyone that is willing to seek the support and make changes. Studies show that 95 per cent of people are more likely to gain progress towards their goals when engaged in regular meetings with accountability and encouragement from a qualified health coach.

How do you motivate people to achieve their goals?

I use health coaching tools/questions for the client to find out what’s truly important to them. We visit their core values and morals and find out what drives them, motivates them and what excites them along with their passions (or even fears) to exercise and health. I look at their key strengths that have helped them in other areas of their life and may have helped them in the past and any successes. I then create ways to build on these and their values to set realistic goals.

How can health coaching improve people’s lives?

Health coaching can transform someone’s life and the people around them. When we are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed – the passion and vision pull you! n

Fulwood’s story stretches back centuries, originally a rural village before blossoming during the Victorian era when Preston’s textile industry brought growth and prosperity. Today, many of Fulwood’s period homes and historic buildings still stand proudly, offering glimpses into its rich past.

One of the area’s most iconic landmarks is Fulwood Barracks, a striking Grade II-listed military site built in the 1840s. While its role as a military base has diminished, the barracks remain home to the Lancashire Infantry

Museum, one of the largest regimental military collections in the country. For history lovers, it’s a hidden gem well worth exploring.

For those who love the outdoors, Fulwood is blessed with an abundance of green spaces. The magnificent Moor Park, Preston’s oldest and largest park, sits on the edge of Fulwood and is a hub for relaxation, fitness and family fun. Whether you’re taking a morning stroll and enjoying a brew at the cafe, or joining one of the many community events held there, Moor Park offers a breath of fresh air in every sense.

Nearby, Haslam Park and the scenic Lancaster Canal provide perfect spots for walking, running, or simply soaking up the peaceful surroundings. With its picturesque footpaths and waterside views, the canal is a local favourite for dog walkers and cyclists alike.

Fulwood’s food and drink scene reflects its cosmopolitan charm. From independent coffee shops to well-loved restaurants and pubs, there’s something to suit every palate.

A number of new locals have recently been welcomed to the area, including a new lounge bar and a planned pizzeria.

FULWOOD’S FOOD AND DRINK SCENE REFLECTS ITS COSMOPOLITAN CHARM

For everyday essentials, Fulwood Central Retail Park and Eastway Hub Retail Park offer a range of shopping units where you can grab a bite to eat and do the big shop, while Fulwood’s smaller boutiques and delis provide a more personal touch. Weekend brunch, coffee catch-ups and leisurely browsing are all part of the Fulwood lifestyle.

Fulwood isn’t just a pretty face – it’s also

Preston’s healthcare and education hub. The Royal Preston Hospital, one of Lancashire’s key medical centres, sits at the heart of the community. The suburb is also home to several outstanding schools, including Archbishop Temple Church of England High School, making it particularly popular with families seeking a safe and nurturing environment.

For wellness seekers, Fulwood offers a range of leisure options – from pilates and yoga studios to scenic jogging routes and local golf courses. If you fancy a swim, Fulwood Leisure Centre has two pools and at the nearby Fulwood Central there’s a swimming pool too. It’s an area that

encourages an active, balanced lifestyle. What truly sets Fulwood apart is its strong sense of community. Local churches, schools and organisations regularly host events that bring neighbours together, from festive Christmas markets to charity fun runs and summer fairs.

WHAT TRULY SETS

FULWOOD APART IS ITS STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY

Sports fans are equally well catered for, with Preston North End Football Club’s

historic ground just minutes from Fulwood, adding to the area’s proud sporting heritage. On the outskirts of Fulwood is Preston Grasshoppers RFC – a rugby club offering a wide range of activities and facilities to the whole community.

With its blend of history, style, green spaces and vibrant community life, Fulwood is more than just a suburb – it’s a lifestyle destination in its own right. Whether you’re drawn by its elegant architecture, its tranquil parks, or its growing food scene, Fulwood is a place to put down roots, make memories and enjoy the very best of Preston living. n

The popular high school celebrated a ‘good’ Ofsted rating earlier this year, which is testament to the positive work and support from parents and staff. Ivan Catlow, Headteacher at Archbishop Temple, said: “Inspectors recognised our students’ exemplary behaviour, their enthusiasm for learning and the care and guidance provided to support their personal development.”

Academically, Archbishop Temple consistently strives for excellence. The curriculum is broad and balanced, catering to a range of needs through both academic and vocational pathways. This commitment to modern pedagogy, coupled with dedicated staff, aims to deliver stimulating and challenging lessons across all age ranges, leading to consistently strong GCSE results that often place the school among the top performers locally and nationally.

Since September 2024 the school has been able to accommodate an extra 55 pupils in each year group. As a highly desirable and successful high school with long waiting lists, these additional places have been welcomed by the local community, although

demand still remains high.

Recently securing £10m government funding, the school will benefit from a new library, better performance spaces and an improved entrance, amongst other facilities. Furthermore, the funding will enable the school to make better

BEYOND SKIN DEEP

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Fulwood, Dr Fida Ul-Haq is using his experience as a GP to run a specialist wellness clinic with a holistic approach to aesthetics, writes

Emma Brereton

With a focus on aesthetics and anti-ageing, Dr FD Aesthetics has been designed with patient autonomy at its heart. The business’ ethos allows those who choose to explore the benefits of aesthetic treatments to feel empowered and to take control of how they feel – not just how they look.

Led by a GP with more than 15 years’ experience across the Fylde and Greater Manchester, as well as a background in emergency medicine, the clinic blends medical expertise with an empathetic, patient-first approach. This unique perspective underpins every consultation and treatment, ensuring each patient receives personalised, thoughtful care tailored to their individual needs and goals.

Dr Fida explained: “My ways of working are rooted in treating the whole person. It’s not about quick fixes or one-size-fits-all procedures. I approach every patient as an individual, bringing compassion, clarity and clinical expertise to everything I do. By combining my experience as a GP, with an in-depth understanding of cosmetic

treatments, I’m able to offer a truly holistic and thoughtful approach to overall appearance and wellbeing.”

COSMETICS ISN’T ABOUT CHASING PERFECTION –IT’S ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE ENHANCE WHAT THEY ALREADY HAVE AND TO ULTIMATELY FEEL CONFIDENT IN THEIR OWN SKIN

From first experiencing specialist training in aesthetics at medical school, Dr Fida brings an artistic eye to anti-ageing and rejuvenation treatments, without ever losing sight of the bigger picture – health and self-confidence. “Cosmetics isn’t about chasing perfection –it’s about helping people enhance what they already have and to ultimately feel confident in their own skin.”

A significant portion of the clinic’s

patients – around 79 per cent – are women who are pre, peri, or post-menopausal. This demographic often seeks answers about why their appearance or mood may be shifting. With Dr Fida, the approach is refreshingly collaborative.

He explained: “I don’t tell people what’s wrong. Instead, I open a conversation to learn about what’s really bothering them. We explore together and then agree on the best course of action.”

Whether it’s subtle enhancements or a full lifestyle assessment, the clinic prides itself on giving patients autonomy. He added: “I won’t hesitate to tell someone when a treatment might take them too far. My job isn’t to sell –it’s to support.”

Dr Fida has built a reputation as a practitioner patients can trust and demand for his expertise now extends well beyond Fulwood. He regularly delivers satellite aesthetic clinics across the Fylde and Greater Manchester, offering the same personalised, medically informed experience to other areas in the North West.

Having worked with thousands of patients, Dr Fida has seen firsthand how a tailored, respectful approach can transform someone’s outlook and confidence.

He said: “Qualifications alone don’t make a good practitioner – it’s the lived experience that counts. Don’t accept something just because it’s become the norm. Assess your lifestyle, take control and choose what’s right for you.” n

MAIDEN CHARITY WALK RAISES OVER £5,000

MAKE SURE YOUR HOME STAYS HOME

When a property is owned as either joint tenants or tenants in common, it transfers upon the death of an owner differently, explains Katy Shakeshaft, Wills and Probate specialist at Farleys Solicitors

JOINT TENANTS

In a joint tenancy, all owners hold an equal share of the property and the share of a deceased joint tenant automatically passes to the surviving joint tenant(s) due to the right of survivorship.

This means that, regardless of what is outlined in the deceased’s will, their share of the property doesn’t become part of their estate.

Instead, it transfers directly to the surviving joint tenant(s).

For example, if two people own a home as joint tenants and one passes away, the surviving owner automatically assumes full ownership of the property, regardless of what their will says.

TENANTS IN COMMON

In contrast, tenants in common each own a specified portion of the property, which can be equal or unequal. When one owner passes away, their share of the property becomes part of their estate and passes according to the terms of their will or, if there’s no will, according to the laws of intestate succession. There is no right of survivorship in this arrangement, so the deceased’s share does not automatically go to the surviving tenant. For instance, if two people own a home as tenants in common and one dies, their share will go to their heirs or beneficiaries as specified in their will.

Owning property as tenants in common can create complications, especially for the

surviving owner. If the deceased’s share passes to heirs who are not interested in allowing the surviving owner to remain in the property, they could force the surviving person to move out. This can be especially challenging if the surviving owner is a spouse or partner who still wishes to live in the home which they part own.

RIGHT OF RESIDENCE

To prevent such issues, it’s essential to include a right of residence in the will when the property is owned as tenants in common. A right of residence clause grants the surviving owner the legal right to remain in the property for a specified period or for their lifetime, even if they no longer hold an ownership share. This ensures the surviving owner can continue living in the home without the risk of being forced out by the new owners, who inherit the deceased’s share. n

A CHIC BOUTIQUE IN THE COUNTRY

Catherine Robinson discovers the Ribble Valley’s newest country fashion boutique

Picture Zara Tindall strolling the Gatcombe estate, or Kate Middleton on the school run – and you’ve caught the vibe of NCS Equestrian Boutique, the new country clothing and equestrian store now open at Northcote Stud, just off the A59 at Langho.

The fashion world has known for years that you don’t have to be sitting on a horse to benefit from the flattering fit and classic lines of equestrian clothing – and NCS Equestrian Boutique knows it too. The country store is catering for the all-round stylish country lover: “We’ve something for every budget,” explains Emily Whiteside, the brains behind the new boutique: “We’re stocking high-end brands like Cavallieria Toscana and practical brands like RG.”

The Cavallieria Toscana range is especially eye-catching, featuring this season, a feminine baby blue tone. Each item is both

distinctively styled and subtly augmented with designer detail. The range includes hoodies with feature zips, fitted shirts with pleat details and a beautifully tailored jacket.

Other classy European brands currently in store are Covalliero, Pikeur and Athleisure. Millie Coultherd, Northcote’s manager, is especially impressed by Athleisure: “It’s very versatile, sporty leisure wear,” she explains. “People are buying it so they can look good walking the dog, but it’s equally suitable for riding in. You can dress it down to nip to the supermarket or dress it up to go out to a restaurant.”

NCS Equestrian Boutique has a dedicated fitting room, but Millie and Emily are always on hand with their extensive knowledge of the brands for advice on fit and styling: “For styles like these, you want the fit just right,” says Millie, “And it’s so much nicer to be able to feel the fabric before you buy.”

As well as its chic and classy clothing, NCS Equestrian Boutique stocks accessories from baseball caps to belts making it the perfect place to pick up an unusual gift for a country lover. In fact, you could even buy a gift for a horse at NCS Boutique as the shop also carries everyday equestrian essentials such as shampoo and saddle soap. There’s a rack of Premier Equine rugs, a rail of Eskadron headcollars, quality tack items from stirrups, to reins – and of course, horse treats.

The boutique’s tasteful wainscotting, equestrian art and antique counter make NCS Equestrian Boutique a place to linger in! NCS Equestrian Boutique is open 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday and whenever there is a competition running at Northcote Stud: “Even if that’s on a Sunday or in the evening,” adds Emily. n

Northcote Stud

The store has proved so successful that after only two months, Emily and Millie are already restocking: “And not just the ladies’ wear,” Emily adds. “We have a range of men’s equestrian wear and we’re increasing the children’s range too, as we move into autumn.”

LET’S TAKE THE DOG

If you’re looking for a lovely local scenic walk that’s perfect for you and your pooch, then look no further than this short walk in Chorley

Yarrow Valley Country Park

4.5 miles / 2hrs

Yarrow Valley Country Park is an absolutely fantastic and incredibly popular destination for dog walkers, offering a wonderful variety of environments for your furry friend!

The extensive network of paths, open spaces, and riverside trails provides ample opportunity for both on-lead strolling and responsible off-lead play. However, it is crucial to be highly mindful of the park’s popularity, other visitors, cyclists (on shared paths), and sensitive wildlife. Always ensure your dog is under control.

This suggested walk offers immense flexibility, allowing you to create a route from approximately 2 to 5+ miles, combining riverside exploration with woodland adventure.

Starting from the Visitor Centre/Car Park: Begin your walk from the Yarrow Valley Country Park Visitor Centre. Here you’ll find facilities like toilets and a cafe (often dog-friendly outside). Head out onto the main paths.

Riverside Rambles along the Yarrow:

A highlight of the park is the River Yarrow. Follow the paths that run closely alongside the river. This offers a peaceful atmosphere with the sounds of flowing water and plenty of interesting scents for your dog. You’ll pass cascades and calmer sections. Keep your dog on a lead near the river’s edge due to currents and potential drops.

Explore the Woodland Trails: Venture into the extensive woodland areas that line the valley sides. Look for paths that wind through the trees, offering shaded

trails, varied scents, and a different walking experience. These areas often provide opportunities for well-behaved dogs with excellent recall to enjoy some off-lead time. The woodlands are home to diverse tree species and undergrowth.

Discover the Lakes and Ponds:

The park also features several small lakes and ponds, remnants of its industrial past. Paths often lead around these bodies of water, offering different views and wildlife spotting opportunities. Keep dogs away from the water’s edge here to protect waterfowl.

Enjoy the Undulating Terrain:

The park is set within a valley, so expect some gentle to moderate slopes as you move between the riverside and the higher woodland paths. These provide a good workout for both you and your dog.

Seek Out Quiet Corners:

Despite its popularity, Yarrow Valley is large enough that you can often find quieter, less-trodden paths if you delve deeper into the woodlands, especially away from the main visitor areas.

Choose Your Loops:

The park has a well-developed network of interconnecting paths. You can easily create various loops, from a short circuit around a lake to a longer trek combining river, woodland and valley sides. Use the park maps (often available at the visitor centre or on information boards) to guide you. n

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY

Adrienne Baker family law solicitor of Forbes Solicitors explains how to preserve family wealth after divorce

With increasingly complex family structures and ongoing economic uncertainty, more families are recognising the importance of succession planning and the long-term preservation of their wealth. Whether through lifetime gifts, property investments, or inheritance, ensuring assets are securely passed down to the next generation is a growing concern.

Many parents are now more cautious about providing financial assistance to adult children, especially where there’s a risk of wealth being lost in the event of a divorce. Whether the support comes in the form of a gift, capital for a business or home, or naming children as beneficiaries in a will, a future separation could leave those assets vulnerable to division.

Fortunately, there are proactive legal steps that can help preserve family wealth.

Pre-Nuptial Agreements

A pre-nuptial agreement (pre-nup) is a legal document signed before marriage, setting out how assets should be divided if the relationship breaks down. Pre-nups are often used to safeguard family wealth and any contributions made or planned by parents. There is currently no act of Parliament in England or Wales that makes pre-nups legally binding but in practice, significant weight will be attached to them so long as they are freely entered into with a full appreciation of its implications, and importantly, the agreement does not lead to an outcome which leaves one party in real financial need. Parties should always seek specialist family law advice so that the guidance given by the Supreme Court in Radmacher v Granatino [2010] UKSC42 is followed.

Post-Nuptial Agreements

A post-nuptial agreement (post-nup) has the same purpose as a pre-nup but is signed after the marriage has taken place. Reasons for choosing a post-nup might include running out of time before the wedding or changes in financial circumstances.

Like a pre-nup, a post-nup provides clarity and protection, particularly if there has been intergenerational gifting, business ownership, or property transfers.

Loan Agreements

Another useful tool is a properly drafted loan agreement. This can protect parents’ financial contributions when those funds are intended to be repaid, rather than gifted. It’s increasingly common for parents to assist with property purchases or renovations and formalising

that contribution as a loan can help protect it during any future divorce proceedings.

Courts are more likely to treat a contribution as a repayable loan (rather than a gift) if there’s a clear, written agreement in place. The agreement should outline the amount, purpose and repayment terms. Without documentation, it may be difficult to argue that the funds were not intended as a gift.

In today’s uncertain environment, protecting family wealth requires careful planning. With more families offering financial support across generations, it’s essential to structure assistance thoughtfully to avoid unintended consequences.

GOOD READ

This summer pack your sunhat, sunglasses and one of these brilliant reads, because wherever you go, a book can take you further

As summer unfurls and the scent of suncream and barbecues fill the air, there’s no better companion than a good book. Whether you’re poolside with a spritzer, in a hammock with the breeze in your hair or snuggled up after a long day exploring cobbled towns abroad, a well-chosen read adds that perfect touch of escapism to your holiday.

Here are three page-turners – for men, women and children that promise to inspire, intrigue and ignite the imagination.

FOR HIM: THE LAST DANCE Mark Billingham

Twisty, gritty and darkly funny, a classic British crime with a fresh new lead.

Mark Billingham, master of British crime fiction, introduces a brilliant new detective in The Last Dance. DI Declan Miller is not your typical copper – he’s sharp, sardonic and still reeling from personal tragedy. But beneath the wisecracks and ballroom dancing obsession lies a tenacious investigator who won’t let a double murder in Blackpool go unanswered.

This is the start of a new series, but with all the pace and polish of a seasoned thriller. Billingham gives us a gritty setting, razor-sharp dialogue and a mystery that keeps you guessing – just the right mix of tension and entertainment for a holiday page-turner.

Bring it to: Your sunlounger or balcony with a cold beer - you’ll be hooked in a chapter.

FOR HER: THE RACHEL INCIDENT

Caroline O’Donoghue

Smart, heartfelt and utterly immersive.

Caroline O’Donoghue’s sparkling novel is set in Cork in the early 2000s – a tale of friendship, secrets and the ache of growing up. Rachel, a college student with a literary crush and a messy love life, finds herself entangled in a series of events that blur the lines between affection and ambition. It’s witty, gorgeously written and filled with moments that feel both nostalgic and fresh.

O’Donoghue writes with an effortless intimacy that invites the reader into the heart of her characters. The novel captures that unique moment of being on the brink of adulthood, when everything feels like it might fall apart – or come beautifully together.

Bring it to: A quiet terrace with a view and a chilled glass of rosé.

FOR THE LITTLE ONES: THE SWIFTS Beth Lincoln

An adventure with mischief, mystery and a message.

Children aged eight to 12 will adore The Swifts, a wildly inventive debut that’s brimming with gothic charm and fastpaced fun. The story follows Shenanigan Swift, who is determined to uncover a family secret during a chaotic reunion in their crumbling ancestral home.

It’s Agatha Christie meets Lemony Snicket, with clever wordplay, quirky characters and themes of identity and belonging.

Lincoln’s writing respects the intelligence of young readers while delivering a satisfying and inclusive adventure. Parents might even sneak a few chapters for themselves.

Bring it to: Bedtime under the stars, or a shady spot after sandcastle-building.

Reading on holiday isn’t just a pastime – it’s an experience. Books allow us to travel further, deeper and stranger than any flight or ferry. They offer solace in quiet moments, stimulation on lazy afternoons and stories that linger long after the sunburn fades. In a world dominated by screens and scrolling, giving yourself or your family the gift of a good book is a small act of wonder.

BUILT WITH PASSSION

Nestled in the heart of Burscough, Dolan Bikes has quietly built a reputation that echoes far beyond the local cycling trails. Known for its high-performance bikes, tailored service and a fiercely loyal customer base, as Ben Hall discovers

There’s something special about riding a Dolan bike. Not just the speed, the smoothness, or the custom fit – but the way people notice. More than once, I’ve been out on the road only to have a fellow rider pull up

alongside, glance over and say something like, ‘That’s a lovely bit of kit’. That kind of response isn’t accidental. It’s the result of decades of dedication and at the centre of it all is Dolan family, the people behind the brand.

WHEN I WENT TO THE SHOWROOM IN BURSCOUGH, I WASN’T HANDED A BROCHURE, I WAS OFFERED A FREE BIKE FIT

From the velodrome to the roads

Terry Dolan’s story begins long before Dolan Bikes had a logo or a showroom with son Stephen now taking on the role of CEO. Stephen grew up immersed in the North West cycling scene, he learned the ropes under the tutelage of Harry Quinn, bike builder to many, but also the British team in his Liverpool bike shop. While many brands are shaped by marketing departments, Dolan was born in the workshop and refined

A bike shop with a heartbeat

From the moment you walk through the door at Dolan Bikes, it feels different. There’s a calmness to the space – no pushy sales chatter – they know this is a quality product and if you are already in the showroom, then you have done your due diligence and are serious and the conversation can begin. The staff, many of them cyclists themselves, by thousands of miles on the road and on the track. Terry took up the challenge to build some of the best bike frames for the elite riders that were looking for tenths of seconds on the track and road and the Dolan name became synonymous with quality bikes. Building bikes for elite riders continued. Three Knights of the Realm can’t be wrong in Sirs Hoy, Wiggins and Cavendish riding track machines to success, but these aren’t bikes that are limited to the peloton. The rider-first philosophy still runs through everything Dolan does.

want to know how you ride, what you’re aiming for and what really matters to you.

When I went to the showroom in Burscough, I wasn’t handed a brochure, I was offered a free bike fit. “We want you to ride something that fits you properly so that you can maximise the enjoyment and that makes a huge difference.” And it does make a difference. After the fit, I realised what had been wrong with my old setup. The Dolan I ended up with felt like it was built around me because, in a way, it was.

Built around you

Dolan doesn’t just sell bikes – they build them with you. Every model they offer, whether it’s a lightweight carbon road bike, an aero track machine, or a stylish

commuter, they all can be configured with bespoke components. It’s a refreshing change from the take-it-or-leave-it packages most brands offer.

AND THAT’S THE MAGIC OF A DOLAN. IT LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING SPECIAL, BECAUSE IT IS

When my build was ready, they let me know it was in the showroom for a final check. “You’ll know straight away whether it’s right, so take it for a spin and see if there is anything we can make better.” The Dolan winning mentality is still there.

Compliments at every corner

That first 10 miles turned into 100, then 500 and the bike just kept impressing. What surprised me most, though, was how other people reacted to it. My usual cycling routes take around the Fylde Coast and Ribble Valley and I have been regularly approached by fellow riders to make comment on how well it looks and not just the sparkling Candy Red colour of the frame, but normally the small touches that I am still noticing myself such as the angle added to the bottom of the fork or the even how the sizing suits my own frame.

And that’s the magic of a Dolan. It looks like something special, because it is. But it also rides like a dream and when you’re the one on the saddle, you feel it in every climb, every descent, every tight corner. And when someone compliments it, you feel proud –because you were part of building it.

Aftercare that goes the extra mile

A couple of weeks after I picked up the bike, I went back for a complimentary 500-mile service which didn’t take long to achieve as the bike was too fun not to ride. That’s been my experience of the bike and staff every time: quick, friendly and entirely without fuss. Plenty of shops sell bikes. Dolan builds relationships.

Ride with purpose

Dolan Bikes isn’t trying to be the biggest name in cycling. They’re not splashing logos across race teams or chasing trends. They’re doing something far more meaningful –building bikes that riders love. One frame, one fit, one rider at a time. Dolan don’t just produce equipment of the highest quality –they have found a way to make riders enjoy the feeling of riding again. n

RELAX, RECONNECT & ENJOY

In the heart of the Ribble Valley, where gently rolling hills meet timeless charm, a new opportunity for modern countryside living has quietly taken shape

Goosnargh Lodge Park, tucked away just outside the historic village of Goosnargh, is a place where thoughtful design, rural tranquility and lifestyle aspirations all come together. Following the launch of their brand-new website in April, now is the perfect time to introduce this exceptional destination to readers of Live Ribble Valley.

Once home to a golf course that opened in 2005, the site remained dormant during

the uncertainty of the pandemic. In 2021, a new chapter began when the land was acquired with a vision to repurpose its potential. The result is something that feels both considered and connected to its surroundings. Goosnargh Lodge Park has been developed with meticulous care, balancing quality infrastructure and bespoke design while keeping the natural beauty of the landscape at the heart of the project. From the outset, the aim was clear –

to create a timeless sanctuary where owners can relax, reconnect and enjoy the peace and space that the countryside offers.

Central to the appeal of the park are the lodges themselves. Each one is hand-built to exacting standards and created in partnership with leading manufacturers to ensure every detail is just right. No two plots are the same, and this variety is matched by a flexibility that appeals to a broad and growing audience. These lodges are ideal for retirees seeking a manageable, stress-free lifestyle without compromising on quality. They also suit those looking to gain a foothold in this stunning part of the world, surrounded by green space and some of the county’s finest scenery.

EACH LODGE IS HAND-BUILT TO EXACTING STANDARDS AND CREATED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LEADING MANUFACTURERS

The lodges are contemporary, constructed in line with British Building Standards (BBS) ensuring they are energy-efficient, with large picture windows and materials chosen to complement the natural palette of the park. The standard of finish throughout reflects an ambition to offer something above and beyond the norm. These are not holiday cabins or hastily built prefabs – they are stylish, comfortable lodges designed to last and adapt to changing needs.

There is a 52-week holiday licence, which offers the freedom to visit and enjoy the lodge

throughout the year, without the restrictions that can often apply in more seasonal developments. Whether it becomes a weekend escape, a longer-term base or a semi-permanent retreat, the park’s flexible arrangements are designed with modern life in mind.

Beyond the lodges themselves, the infrastructure of the park has been developed with equal attention to detail. From roadways and landscaping to individual plot services and planting schemes, every decision reflects a commitment to quality and care. There’s a sense of spaciousness and privacy, yet also a natural flow and cohesion across the site. The result is a park that feels settled, not sterile – a living, breathing part of the landscape that respects its surroundings and invites nature in.

Sustainability plays a central role in the development too. All exterior cladding on the lodges is made from 100 per cent recycled materials. Solar panels are in the pipeline to further reduce the park’s environmental footprint. Electric vehicle charging points are being introduced to meet future demand and the landscaping strategy includes wildflower planting to support biodiversity. These aren’t token gestures – they’re part of

a wider ethos that aims to tread lightly and protect the beauty of the countryside for years to come.

GOOSNARGH LODGE PARK OFFERS NOT JUST A CHANGE OF SCENERY, BUT A CHANGE OF PACE

The lifestyle on offer here is one that many aspire to but few achieve. Morning walks through peaceful lanes, afternoons spent exploring local pubs such as the charming Ye Horns Inn, alternatively, enjoy a leisurely stroll to neighbouring Mrs Kirkham’s Farm Shop and spend evenings gazing out at open skies – this is a place to relax and breathe again. For many, it’s a way of escaping the noise and pressures of urban life while

staying within easy reach of friends, family and amenities. With excellent local produce, a strong sense of community and access to some of Lancashire’s most scenic routes, Goosnargh Lodge Park offers not just a change of scenery, but a change of pace.

There’s something quietly compelling about this project. It’s not about making noise or grand statements. It’s about thoughtful design, long-term vision and getting the fundamentals right. It speaks to people who value quality and independence, who want somewhere they can truly call their own without compromise. The team behind the park are local, passionate and hands-on. They’re not part of a faceless national chain. They’re here, on site, involved – and that shows in every aspect of what’s been built so far.

Of course, the best way to understand what makes Goosnargh Lodge Park special is to experience it for yourself. A visit brings everything into focus – the space, the views, the finishes, the calm. Later this summer, the team will be hosting an open day to showcase the lodges and share the vision with prospective buyers and curious locals alike. It’s a perfect opportunity to explore what could be a life-changing move.

In the meantime, the website offers plenty of useful information and a glimpse into what’s already creating a buzz among early visitors. With a strong start to initial sales and enquiries growing each week, it’s clear that Goosnargh Lodge Park is striking a chord. n

SUMMER ON THE FYLDE COAST

Tourism and Cultural Services Manager at Fylde Borough Council, Tim Dixon, highlights how to spend the summer here on the sunny Fylde coast

Coming soon to Fylde in this busy events season is the fourteenth Lytham 1940s Weekend, which takes place on Lytham Green on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th August.

Starting as a one-off event in 2010, this has now taken place every year (except for 2020 and 2021 due to covid) and brings colour, nostalgia, music, dance and fashion to Lytham and is a real favourite on the popular 1940s circuit. There’s even learn to dance sessions, so if you have two left feet and want to dance under expert supervision, this is your chance.

Also, in Lytham this summer at the impressive Grade I listed Georgian Lytham Hall, set in 78 acres of mature parkland, is legendary singer Tony Christie in the Music and Proms extravaganza on 23rd August, with the Overtones appearing on 24th August, both to the backdrop of the stunning hall. Tickets available via the Lytham Hall website.

DON’T MISS THE ST ANNES MUSIC FESTIVAL, AN EXTREMELY POPULAR ADDITION TO THE FYLDE SUMMER EVENTS CALENDAR

While visiting the Hall, do check out the new Fylde Gallery – opened in January 2025 this is a new first floor, free to visit art gallery that is showing some of the paintings within the Lytham St Annes Art Collection, held in Trust by Fylde Council. The current curated exhibition, entitled ‘Savage Beauty’ shows off some works by Richard Ansdell RA and runs to mid-August. The venue is open Thursdays to Saturdays 11am to 4pm with donations welcome which are invested back into the upkeep of the art collection.

Have you been to the Lowther Pavilion lately? There’s now the impressive brand-new multi-million-pound Windmill Performance and Education Centre adjacent to the Pavilion. This new space is a real community asset and allows so much more to be programmed

and features the Chapman Studio, plus a new outdoor classroom. As always, there’s a packed programme for the Lowther Pavilion, so do check out their website for more details. Over the summer there’s music, comedy, jazz, cinema and events in the park to name but a few.

In St Annes there’s the annual St Annes International Kite Festival taking place 29th – 31st August (weather permitting). With the tide levels guiding these dates it will be an extremely colourful and busy weekend with kite fliers from all over the world, fairground, family entertainment and much more besides and don’t miss the St Annes Music Festival, an extremely popular addition to the Fylde summer events calendar.

Taking place in Ashton Gardens from 22nd –25th August there’s four days of great local music at this free family festival, plus new for this year a new Fantasy Fayre of gaming, activities and plenty of arts and crafts. Plus, of course there’s plenty going on at Fairhaven Lake and Gardens including motorboats, adventure golf, paddleboarding and so much more. We hope to see you this summer! n

FLOWER POWER

They say a quality florist is a sign of a healthy high street and Bond & Bloom in Clifton Street certainly helps Lytham to blossom

When you step inside, there is an immediate sense of welcome, calm and creativity. Gentle scents of fresh flowers and seasonal greenery greet you and gorgeously packaged gift bouquets await, nestled alongside charming pieces for the home. A large flower fridge arranged chromatically encourages you to create your own bespoke design –with the help of one of the talented resident florists of course!

In the 10 years since Bond & Bloom first opened, the team has developed an artisan

reputation for high calibre floral gorgeousness. Founder Suzanne Taylor is proud of the family legacy behind the name.

“We sit on the same spot where my great granny Jane Bond traded from as a grocer in the 1890s! We are honouring her and the generations before us – Lytham’s heritage is alive in the high street we enjoy today.”

WE SIT ON THE SAME SPOT WHERE MY GREAT GRANNY JANE BOND TRADED FROM AS A GROCER IN THE 1890S!

Continuity and connection are central to the charm of this delightful florist shop. Bond & Bloom does not simply sell flowers –as Suzanne points out, “Our work connects us with people at significant moments in their lives. It is not only creative but deeply vocational.

“I love working with a creative team who share my vision. We bounce ideas off each other and that energy fills the shop.”

Specialising in gift bouquets, weddings, funerals and corporate arrangements with flowers sourced fresh from the grower, the florists respond to each customer brief –guiding and advising.

Suzanne’s role does not end when the shop closes. As Chair of the Lytham Business Partnership, she is a true champion of the High Street.

“It has never been more important to shop locally and stand together – whether in business, in community or as a family, we are all continuing the work of those who have gone before, aiming to leave our own positive legacy.”

Working with other business groups, Suzanne launched Lytham’s Loyalty Card which benefits independent businesses and enhances the offering for visitors and locals. She is also one of the Lytham Christmas organisers with the Switch On event set this year for Saturday 15th November.

“I have never been so busy. Before I was empty-nested and anticipating the day when my mum would no longer need me, I seized the opportunity to launch Bond & Bloom –it’s a labour of love in a community I adore, in the town where I was born. Mum passed away three years ago aged 95, very proud of Lytham and what we had achieved at “Granny’s shop.”

“Come and pay us a visit! If I am not in, you will likely see the talented Jules, Hannah, Tatiana or Angela. We are open 7 days a week and open online 24/7.” n

LEISURELY LYTHAM WALK

Local writer and walking enthusiast, Steve Garrill, takes us on an easy circular route round Lytham

Lytham Circular 2 (3.5 miles)

Wheelchair/pushchair friendly – but use Woodlands Road instead of Ansdell Road footbridge as Witch Wood can be muddy. Phil’s Bakery in Market Square is open from 7am for freshly baked goods, butties and coffee.

1. From the Railway Station bear left through Sparrow Park past the drinking fountain. Turn right onto Park Street.

The drinking fountain was built in 1883 in Market Square in memory of John Talbot Clifton by his widow but caused controversy from the start. It was moved to Sparrow Park in 1909 by a local builder at a cost of £40 but never reconnected to the water supply!

2. At the end of Park Street turn right into Market Street. Bear right into Hastings Place. The Cenotaph is on your left.

The Cenotaph was unveiled in 1922. It commemorates the 190 service personnel from Lytham who lost their lives in both world wars and in subsequent conflicts.

3. Turn left at the end and cross over into Queen Street. Turn left into Henry Street. At the end on the right is Lytham Heritage Centre.

Lytham Heritage Centre was the former Manchester & County Bank built in 1899. Open 10am-4pm Tuesday-Sunday, it’s well worth a visit if you are interested in local history.

4. Turn left into Clifton Square and right onto Clifton Street. Pass St Peter’s church and turn right. Cross via the zebra crossing. Turn left to the windmill and lifeboat.

On 9th December 1886, the Mexico was caught in a storm. Lifeboats were launched from this lifeboat station, St Annes and Southport. The Lytham lifeboat Charles Biggs, on her maiden rescue, rescued the 12 crew but the St Annes and Southport lifeboats capsized, 27 of the 29 crew were drowned. This remains the worst disaster in RNLI history.

5. Turn back and continue west along the prom. Turn left to the end of the jetty.

The jetty is the site of a pier which was opened in 1865. Two barges split it in two in a storm in 1903. A fire in 1928 caused further extensive damage and was finally demolished in 1960.

6. Turn back and turn left along the prom.

7. Continue past the shrimping tractors on your left. Turn right and then left to follow the path through the dunes running parallel to a high wall.

Over 90 per cent of Lancashire’s sand dunes are in the Fylde but sadly over 80 per cent of the dunes have been lost in the last 150 years.

8. At the end of the path go to the road, cross over and turn right to pass the White Church. Cross over and go straight on. [Wheelchair/pushchair turn left, then right at the roundabout, over the bridge, turn right to Rossall Road, turn left at Ansdell Road North.]

9. Cross the footbridge and down Ansdell Road North. Turn right, then cross via the zebra crossing. Cross over Forest Drive. Continue and take the footpath into Witch Wood before the railway bridge. Witch Wood was opened by HRH Prince Philip in May 1974. It is owned by the Lytham St Annes Civic Society and maintained by volunteers.

10. Continue to the end and turn right into Lytham.

Excellent food and drink available at The Station Pub & Grill. n

YOUR PERFECT DAY AT THE COAST

Some family traditions happen by accident and this one started for me on a sunny Father’s Day a few years ago. We’d rented a beach hut at St Annes on a bit of a whim, just hoping for a nice day out. What we got was so much more and since then, it’s become one of our favourite summer rituals, one I now share with my children and grandson year after year.

There’s something really special about these huts. They’re not just a colourful backdrop for Instagram snaps – although they are very photogenic! These are thoughtfully equipped, homely little spaces where you can properly settle in and make a day of it. Inside, you’ll find electricity, heating, a fridge, kettle, microwave, crockery, cutlery, even comfy seating and a deck with a view. All you need to bring is food, drink and people you love spending time with.

On one of our recent visits, we made it a family affair, three generations together, enjoying sandwiches and seaside games, popping back into the hut when the breeze picked up or the sun got a little strong. My grandson ran in and out, spade in hand, giddy with freedom. The rest of us took turns brewing tea, sharing stories and soaking up the views.

These beach huts offer a unique mix of

From spontaneous days out to cherished family traditions, Tedd Walmsley shares why renting a beach hut by the sea has become the ultimate summer treat for all generations

nostalgia and comfort. They’re close to the pier and a short stroll to the local shops and eateries. There’s even a private ‘Show Hut’, which has its own garden and no neighbours –perfect if you want more privacy or if you’ve got younger kids or lots of beach gear (which we always do). You get access from 10am to

THE HUTS ARE THOUGHTFULLY EQUIPPED, HOMELY LITTLE SPACES WHERE YOU CAN PROPERLY SETTLE IN AND MAKE A DAY OF IT

midnight, which makes for a relaxed day and if you’re planning a big gathering, they’ll help you book huts next to each other so the whole group can stay connected.

Another thing I love is how well-run everything is. You get a handy email the day

before with clear directions, parking tips and even suggestions on where to pick up the best fish and chips. The team on-site are lovely too, always happy to lend a hand or point you in the right direction.

Whether you’re from Preston, the Fylde or further afield like us in the Ribble Valley, I genuinely can’t recommend it enough. It’s a proper seaside escape without the hassle. We’ve celebrated birthdays here, marked Father’s Day with special moments and simply enjoyed quiet days with the sound of the waves and a mug of tea in hand. These huts are more than just a day at the beach they’re a place where memories are made. n

PRESTON PUPILS VISIT EUREKA

Year 10 pupils from Tarleton Academy in Preston enjoyed a hands-on day at Eureka Science + Discovery. Pupils took part in a range of interactive sessions and activities designed to spark curiosity and build confidence in asking big questions about the world around them. One of the highlights of the day was a live Q&A session, which gave pupils the chance to speak directly to experts connected with the RRS Sir David Attenborough. The experience encouraged students to think about real-world issues like climate change and careers in science and journalism and was filmed by ITV News, as part of a national news broadcast.

GOLD STANDARD FOR BEHAVIOUR

Strike Lane Primary School in Freckleton, Preston has been awarded a Gold Quality Mark for pupil behaviour by Lancashire County Council. The school received the award in the County Council’s Behaviour Quality Mark Scheme, which recognises excellent behaviour in a school. Strike Lane has been pursuing a ‘trauma informed’ approach to pupil behaviour and relationships for several years, which aims to understand the deeper reasons why some pupils may find it difficult to manage or regulate their behaviour. Their specific policies on safeguarding, online safety and anti-bullying have been recognised by the Gold Quality Mark from the County Council.

EMPOWERING

YOUNG MINDS

Ask any parent what they want most from a primary school, and you’ll likely hear the same few words: happiness, confidence, academic progress and a love of learning

At Ashbridge Independent School in Lancashire, these aren’t just aspirations, they’re embedded in the school’s everyday approach to education for children aged 4 to 11.

Led by experienced headteacher Karen Mehta, Ashbridge offers a unique and carefully balanced blend of academic excellence, outdoor learning, creativity and emotional wellbeing. From planting vegetables to performing on stage, forest school lessons to camping out, every day is designed to challenge, inspire and nurture young minds.

“We believe in preserving childhood,” says Karen. “That means allowing time to explore, to play and to learn in a meaningful, hands-on way – our Year 6 pupils spend as much time in the forest as the younger pupils. Education should be joyful and memorable.”

Karen brings decades of experience to the role, including time spent at international schools in Brunei, where she developed a deep respect for experiential learning in nature.

Ashbridge’s innovative TAPESTRY curriculum reflects this ethos. It includes academia, sport and health, the performing arts, outdoor learning, residential trips, personal development, extra-curricular activities and pupil voice. Pupils are taught

that they have four fundamental rights: to learn, to feel safe, to be themselves and to be happy. These principles shape the school culture and are brought to life in every classroom and outdoor space.

“Outdoor learning isn’t treated as an add-on – it’s central to our curriculum,” adds Karen.

“Whether pupils are learning about pollination or habitats, they’ll be outside, discovering it first-hand.”

OUR YEAR 6 PUPILS SPEND AS MUCH TIME IN THE FOREST AS THE YOUNGER PUPILS. EDUCATION SHOULD BE JOYFUL AND MEMORABLE

The school is also home to two sheep, two goats, two ponies, a cow, seven guinea pigs and soon, a school dog, providing opportunities for responsibility and wellbeing through animal care.

The school day runs from 7am to 6pm, which is ideal for working families, and with 25 hours of dedicated lesson time each week, Ashbridge ensures strong academic progress alongside space for creativity and exploration.

Karen said: “Community matters here too.

Transition into Reception includes, visits, Parent Welcome Meetings, Moving-up Days and time for parents to meet.

“We encourage parents to meet each other, just like the children do – we want everyone to feel part of something special.”

Karen describes Ashbridge pupils as proud, curious and open-minded. “They’re the best ambassadors. They embrace every opportunity and when they leave us ready for the next stage, we know they’ll carry that spirit with them.” n

THE FIRST CHAPTER…

For a joyful start to lifelong learning, youngsters flourish at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep

Set in the heart of Stonyhurst’s spectacular 1,000-acre estate is St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep – a place where childhood is cherished, curiosity is nurtured and young minds are inspired. For families seeking a warm, values-led foundation to early education, the Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep offers a joyful and enriching experience that shapes young confident learners and adventurous, thoughtful individuals.

At Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep, which welcomes children from age three to seven, the ethos is rooted in the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis – care for the whole person – the Pre-Prep champions each child’s unique personality and learning journey. Whether they are a budding artist, an eager reader, a future scientist or natural explorer, the dedicated teaching team ensures every pupil is seen, celebrated and supported.

The environment here is as inspirational as the ethos. Light-filled classrooms, vibrant learning spaces and open-plan areas invite exploration, creativity and collaboration.

DAILY OUTDOOR PLAY AND WOODLAND CLASSROOM SESSIONS OFFER ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR FRESH AIR, DISCOVERY AND HANDS-ON LEARNING

Outside, the experiences expand –daily outdoor play and woodland classroom sessions offer endless opportunities for

fresh air, discovery and hands-on learning, from tending vegetables in the Mission Garden to nature trails: “The outdoor space is an extension of the classroom,” explains Charina Hartley, Early Years Foundation Stage Co-ordinator, who adds: “Children can play in the mud kitchen and in the sandpit plus they can take part in den-building –we have a whole range of activities that are made relevant to academic learning.”

Strong academic foundations in Pre-Prep are created through a rich curriculum that includes phonics, early reading, numeracy, French and technology, all delivered in engaging, age-appropriate ways. Small class sizes mean teachers truly get to know each child, adapting their approach to suit individual needs. The result is a learning environment where children feel safe, brave, inquisitive and develop a lifelong love of learning.

But what truly sets Pre-Prep apart is the way it blends strong academic and pastoral care with an exceptional enrichment programme. Children can try judo, gymnastics, tennis or yoga, develop rhythm and expression through musical theatre, get involved in the regular concerts and the annual nativity or get creative with craft

sessions. Music and drama are a particular strength, with specialist teachers offering everything from violin, piano and drum lessons to drama – all designed to build confidence from an early age.

The children also enjoy extraordinary access to the wider Stonyhurst campus. From weekly swimming lessons in the indoor pool to visits to the College Museum, the opportunities are remarkable. Where else can a four-year-old come face to face with the extraordinary collection of pioneer explorer Charles Waterton’s – widely regarded as an inspiration to David Attenborough – or learn about history through fossilised dinosaur poo? These experiences spark awe, build knowledge and connect children with the richness of learning in the world around them.

Spiritual formation is gently woven into daily life, reflecting the school’s Catholic identity. Through prayer, reflection and class worship, children are encouraged to grow in kindness, empathy and gratitude. The Jesuit Profile, which guides children to be loving, hopeful and attentive, forms the foundations for character development and helps young minds in exploring the meaning of faith: “Even the youngest children are encouraged to reflect on their day with a focus on gratitude, generosity and thankfulness,” says head of Pre-Prep Sarah Gibson, who adds that the

Stonyhurst motto ‘Quant je puis’ or ‘As much as I can’ is just as relevant to the children in Pre-Prep: “It’s an achievable, living motto and we have high expectations of our children, who aim to accomplish as much as they can in every activity.”

One of the greatest strengths of Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep is its strong sense of family. Warm, trusting relationships between staff, children and parents create a nurturing community where each child feels secure, supported and truly known. Teachers work in close partnership with families, fostering a spirit of collaboration through regular communication, progress updates, assessments and thoughtful personalised care.

THE FACILITIES ARE IMPRESSIVE, BUT IT IS THE PEOPLE – THEIR SHARED PURPOSE AND THE JOY THEY RADIATE – THAT TRULY MAKE THIS PLACE SO WARM AND WELCOMING

As children move through Pre-Prep and prepare to step up into Year 3 at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall Prep School, the transition feels natural and exciting. Familiar faces, familiar spaces and consistent routines ensure continuity and confidence.

Now marking over 20 years since its opening in 2004, Pre-Prep is a well-established and highly regarded entry point to one of the UK’s leading Catholic independent schools. Recent refurbishments have introduced thoughtfully enhanced resources and bright, adaptable learning spaces to an already vibrant setting.

The facilities are impressive, but it is the people – their shared purpose and the joy they radiate – that truly make this place so warm and welcoming.

For families exploring independent education, Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep offers more than a start – it offers a springboard into a lifelong journey of wonder, growth and discovery. n

EXTRAORDINARY BEGINNINGS

The magic of Prep at Westholme – where confident futures are shaped

Imagine a place where children as young as four spend their school days immersed in music, stories, science and adventure. A place where the Principal reads to the youngest pupils each week and where the journey from Reception to Sixth Form is seamless across one inspiring educational setting.

This is Westholme Prep – a place where extraordinary beginnings shape confident futures.

Nestled in the same rural Lancashire grounds as the Senior School and Sixth Form, Westholme Prep offers children aged four to 11 a unique sense of continuity and belonging.

FROM THEIR

EARLIEST DAYS WITH US, CHILDREN ARE NURTURED AND CHALLENGEDINTELLECTUALLY, EMOTIONALLY AND CREATIVELY

“Our Prep community wholeheartedly empowers Westholme’s youngest pupils,” says Carla Hornby, Head of Prep. “From their earliest days with us, children are nurtured and challenged – intellectually, emotionally and creatively. They blossom into articulate, confident and impressive young people.”

Teachers at Westholme Prep build strong, respectful relationships with pupils, offering warm, consistent guidance that helps children thrive. This mutual trust means pupils

feel secure and confident to embrace every opportunity.

“Westholme is like a family to me. I’ve been here since I was three years old. The teachers are friendly and welcoming and there are lots of opportunities”, says Rahmeen, in Year 5. “It’s a really fun place to be. I am excited to go to school every day to learn something new.”

And exciting events this term have shown these values in action: “Our recent Prep sleepover was embraced by nearly every child in Year 2 and 3 which speaks volumes about the confidence and security our pupils feel,” says Judith Dixon, Deputy Head of Prep. “It also reflects the high level of trust parents place in us – we don’t take that lightly.”

Talking about her experience of the Prep sleepover, Eliza from Year 2, said: “I liked making my teddy and she slept with me and took most of my sleeping bag! I have never had a sleepover without my family and it was a really exciting and different experience.”

From a heartwarming grandparents’

tea party, to Saturday morning experience sessions designed to embrace new families, the sense of belonging and inclusion runs through the very fabric of Westholme Prep.

Academic excellence begins early at Westholme. A bespoke curriculum, enriched by subject-specialist teachers from the outset in Sport, Drama, Languages, Music and Technology, inspires imaginative, independent thinkers.

“It’s so good to be able to start young doing what you enjoy like acting and singing,” says Arabella in Year 5. “You can take exams in things you love and perform in the theatre showing your personality.”

Pupils begin LAMDA spoken poetry exams from Reception and learn a variety of instruments, starting with the ocarina in Year 2. The school orchestra rehearses

weekly and children proudly perform and share achievements in assemblies.

“It’s amazing to be part of the orchestra and have the opportunity to practise every week and build up to perform on the Croston Theatre stage,” says Mustafa in Year 5. “I play the glockenspiel and the piano and I enjoy it very much.”

The unique opportunities that form part of daily life at Westholme Prep create memories that will be talked about for a lifetime.

Mrs Hornby explains: “Our children learn through experience. It could be a trip to France for Year 4-6, a visit to hear the Philharmonic Orchestra for our younger pupils to show their knowledge of musical instruments, or even a Q&A with astronaut Tim Peake. Every moment is an opportunity to spark curiosity. These experiences give our pupils conversation starters and wider knowledge of the world – they expose them to more of life beyond the classroom.”

A typical day at Westholme Prep involves the likes of Paralympian and former Westholmian Mark Tompsett, joining pupils for a swimming gala – and diving in himself to race against Year 6.

“I really enjoyed the experience,” says Thomas in Year 6. “It was very exciting because I swam in the same pool as a Paralympian and he inspired me because I might like to

be a swimmer when I am older.”

Charlotte from Year 6 echoed his thoughts, saying: “It was really nerve-wracking getting on the blocks to swim my 50-metre butterfly race, but I really enjoyed it – even if he did beat us!”

THESE EXPERIENCES GIVE OUR PUPILS WIDER KNOWLEDGE OF THE WORLD – THEY EXPOSE THEM TO MORE OF LIFE BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

From chess club to enhance cognitive functions like memory, critical thinking and problem solving and famous author visits, entrepreneurial projects and musical productions like the recent Lion King-inspired ‘Circle of Life’, pupils are encouraged to throw themselves into their talents and passions through a co-curricular programme which changes seasonally.

“From the moment our families arrive, they become part of a warm and vibrant school community,” says Mrs Hornby. Taster days for pupils joining mid-year are carefully designed where children are paired with a ‘buddy’ whose passions and interests match their own.

Long-standing traditions sit comfortably

alongside fresh ideas, thanks to an exceptional team of experienced and forward-thinking staff. Every pupil is known, supported and celebrated.

The state-of-the-art Prep School, nestled in the rural Wilmar Lodge setting, gives children space to breathe, learn and grow. From woodland adventures to professional theatre performances, swimming lessons to 3D design, the facilities on offer to even the youngest of Westholmians is impressive.

Families interested in experiencing Westholme Prep in action are encouraged to contact the admissions team to arrange a personal tour.

“We look forward to welcoming your family to our Westholme Prep family,” concludes Carla. n

NEW VETERINARY SCHOOL OPENS IN LANCASHIRE

The University of Central Lancashire has officially opened the UK’s eleventh school of veterinary medicine with a mission to create confident, skilled and compassionate veterinary professionals from a wide range of backgrounds

Designed to be world-class, with state-of-the-art facilities, the purpose-built, gold-clad building was officially opened by the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, Amanda Parker, following a two-year construction process.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Central Lancashire, Professor Graham Baldwin said: “This is another very special moment in our story and the start of an exciting new chapter. By establishing the first school of veterinary medicine in our county and the second in our region, the University of Central Lancashire is proud that its new £40 million investment can start making a real difference to help such an important profession.

“I’m proud that from day one our new school will have a special focus on the emotional

wellbeing and professional skills of students, supporting them to navigate complex challenges throughout a demanding but rewarding career caring for and treating animals.

THE UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL LANCASHIRE IS PROUD THAT ITS NEW £40 MILLION INVESTMENT CAN START MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE TO HELP SUCH AN IMPORTANT PROFESSION

“Widening participation is something our university is renowned for. Via our School of Veterinary Medicine’s new admissions policy and our own position as a top 20 institute for social mobility, we’ll be better positioned to select and train future veterinary professionals who understand the challenges of the communities they serve whether that be in urban, rural or farming communities.”

The veterinary profession isn’t nearly as diverse as it could be with only around 4 per cent of vets being Black or people of colour, compared to 18 per cent of people in the UK population overall.

High-specification facilities within the new building include simulated consultation rooms, operating theatres, diagnostic suites, dental rooms, a physiotherapy suite and a dedicated area for kennels. Additionally, x-ray, ultrasound and diagnostic facilities have been provided, along with a hydrotherapy treadmill and physiotherapy suite for the rehabilitation of dogs and a microscopy laboratory.

The new vet school also boasts an ‘Immersive Room’ in the building which is equipped with interactive walls and smells. It’s the only university vet school in the country to have this facility and potentially one of only two in the world. This commitment to authentic real-world learning is carried throughout the design of the teaching facilities.

Dr Heather Bacon OBE, Dean of Veterinary Medicine, added: “We want to open the doors to a fulfilling career in veterinary medicine and allied animal health sciences.

“We believe the work of veterinary professionals is important in all communities and veterinary surgeons are better able to work with people when they truly understand the challenges faced by them.” n

A passion and advocacy for the county of Lancashire, where he himself was raised and where he has chosen to bring up his own family, had been at the heart of everything Stephen stood for throughout his career in local politics.

People before politics is Stephen Atkinson’s mantra for a historic new dawn at County Hall, writes Katie Hammond

As a Conservative councillor and leader of Ribble Valley Borough Council, Stephen Atkinson dedicated more than six years to serving the residents and rural communities under his remit.

The beginning of 2025, however, marked a period of growing frustration with the party he had strived to support and uphold the values of so diligently and March of this year saw his controversial defection to Reform UK.

The 55-year-old father-of-two reflects: “After I visited Downing Street for the first time in 2019, I came away deflated at the feeling of confusion surrounding

the Conservative party at national level. It made me question everything we were striving for locally and I felt our voices were going unheard.”

From there, things moved very quickly and the local elections on 1st May this year, saw Reform UK officially take control of the local authority after winning 53 of the 84 seats – an emphatic vote of confidence from the residents of Lancashire. The Conservatives had previously held the council with 46 seats since 2017 having won the election then and again in 2021.

For Stephen’s part, this meant the election to represent his home borough of Ribble Valley South West, with a total of 2,174 votes and the subsequent ratification as leader of Lancashire County Council three weeks later.

Discussing the council’s new priorities, the challenges of leading under a Reform UK mandate and longer-term plans, Stephen, a self-trained engineer by trade, says: “I’m very much looking forward to working with fellow councillors and officers to build and deliver a better future for everyone in Lancashire.

“This county’s residents deserve to know where every pound is going. We’re questioning contracts, which may have gone unchallenged for years, re-focusing resources to frontline services and away from bureaucracy.

“We need to prioritise the essentials –social care, special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), roads and public safety and take the hardline on any spend that doesn’t serve the core needs of our communities.”

Stephen’s tenure at Ribble Valley Borough Council illustrates that he is a man of his word. With council tax successfully frozen for residents three times over seven years and the borough deemed the ninth healthiest place to live in the UK, he has proved his commitment

to positive impact and change.

By the time election day dawned on 1st May, Stephen’s bid for the seat of Ribble Valley South West – the second safest Conservative seat in Lancashire – was borne of a passion for change and a re-set for the communities he cares for so deeply.

He adds: “We met so many people who voiced their frustrations very articulately when canvassing in the run-up to the election. I was particularly shocked by some of the levels of rural poverty I witnessed –it saddens me to the core that many of our farms have dwindling stock and that some of our farmers are being forced to live in shocking conditions. They can’t even access the benefits system if needed, as they are deemed to have assets in the form of farm machinery – the very tools they need to farm their land to make a living.”

WE NEED TO PRIORITISE THE ESSENTIALS AND TAKE THE HARDLINE ON ANY SPEND THAT DOESN’T SERVE THE CORE NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITIES

Election day saw Stephen win the Ribble Valley South West seat by more than 1,000 votes. Then the real work began, with him being asked to stand as leader of Lancashire County Council in an unprecedented and rapid timeline for the local authority’s history.

Reflecting on his first few weeks in County Hall, Stephen says: “We’ve had the challenge of coming together – I felt it was extremely important to nurture a sense of security and collaboration with the officers as quickly as possible.

“Creating a cabinet was paramount so that we could continue to function as an efficient local authority body.

“One of the first things we did was to merge the existing climate change role with rural affairs and another priority was for

us to create a digital data and procurement cabinet member role to enable us to identify and benchmark where spend is accelerating.

“Along with these immediate changes, we must support the continuation of local democracy and keep a very challenging budget balanced.”

A visit from Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, served to reinforce Stephen’s ambitions for the team at County Hall.

Addressing staff, Mr Farage said: “We will be judged, and without wishing to put too much of a burden on your shoulders, when it comes how we do at the next general election, you will be a very important component part.

“You’ve been put here by the voters in Lancashire, you’ve been asked to make savings where they’re appropriate, you’ve been asked to uphold high standards of behaviour in public life and you’ve been asked to do the best for the county –and I know that in your hearts, all of you absolutely want to do that. Get this right –improve the county, improve people’s lives –and you will all feel an immense sense of pride.”

As for further plans, Stephen is emphatic in his stance on future local government structural changes and devolution: “Local services should be delivered by local councils and strategic services by county council. This two-tier system gives a sense of identity and understanding and proved hugely successful when some central functions were passported to local councils during the pandemic.

“There is a national move towards regional councils being created, which means the county of Lancashire could be split into a number of geographical areas. Lancashire as a county is complicated and we believe this decision should be made by the electorate. The two-tiered system means local services stay protected and also eschews a sense of place and civic pride.” n

Over three insightful days, speakers and experts from around the world shared their perspectives on the trends reshaping financial services and how firms can evolve to meet rising expectations. Branch Principal Wayne Hayhurst picks out his highlights here:

AI, INNOVATION AND WHAT’S NEXT

One of the key themes throughout the event was the growing influence of artificial intelligence. From Keith Ferrazzi’s keynote address on the shift from traditional leadership to ‘teamship’ in hybrid, AI-enabled environments, to Zach Kass’s session on using AI for positive impact, the message was clear: AI is more than a productivity tool – it’s an opportunity to rethink how teams work and how clients are served.

INNOVATION STARTS WITH MINDSET

In her talk on the Surprising Power of Expectations, neuroscientist Tali Sharot shared how innovation isn’t only driven by resources or expertise – it’s often fuelled by

how we think. Some of the most meaningful progress happens when people take on problems others have avoided, missed or dismissed.

Another standout session came from Dennis Moseley Williams, who addressed the role of resistance in holding teams back. His message? The biggest barriers to progress are rarely external – they’re often internal – hesitation, self-doubt or the stories we tell ourselves about what’s possible. Translating ideas into real change takes more than inspiration –it requires discipline and a willingness to challenge the status quo.

Wayne notes: “At Raymond James, Ribble Valley I am keen to foster a culture where big ideas are backed by thoughtful, strategic planning. As we continue to refine our client experience, this mindset will help us keep moving forward with purpose – ensuring we stay ahead of the curve and continue delivering the high standards our clients expect and deserve!”

REDEFINING FINANCIAL SERVICES TO PUT YOU FIRST

Wayne returned with a renewed focus on turning ideas into action here at Raymond James, Ribble Valley. The ultimate goal? “To ensure our clients, both new and existing, continue to benefit from a service that evolves with their needs and expectations.”

Wayne concluded: “The conference underlined how dynamic the world of investment really is, responding to changes that affect us all, some of which we cannot control. Our advice must be sensitive to each client using the best technology available. I am looking forward to sharing my learning from the experience with the team here to the benefit of our clients.

“We welcome anyone who is serious about their finances to book an initial consultation and investigate how the talented team at Raymond James, Ribble Valley could help facilitate the financial future they envisage.” n

ALL-ELECTRIC SUPER CAR

The 426-mile range provided by the speedy new BMW iX xDrive60 M Sport, sets a benchmark in the ultra-competitive electric market, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Peter Austin

Once upon a time there was a driver and a car. The driver was the commander, the one in complete control, who decided and dictated what went on. The car simply obeyed.

I know, it sounds completely absurd.

But hey, here we are in 2025 and would you believe it, the roles have been completely reversed – with the benefits of parking assist – of course!

Take the all-thinking, all-action, almighty iX – BMW’s very first purpose-built allelectric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) –it was introduced a few years back as the ‘first chapter’ for the global brand with pioneering design, cutting-edge technology and dynamic electrified drive.

Well, let it be known that the said BMW iX is now even better with more power, sportier design and driving dynamics, alongside an increased electric range.

The impressive trio are the BMW iX xDrive45, BMW iX xDrive60 M Sport and BMW iX M70 xDrive.

The BMW iX xDrive60 M Sport was my gift for a test drive and it looked and felt the business from the get-go.

The plusses came thick and fast, but let’s get a big one out of the way first – it provides 426 miles of electric range (WLTP).

Pause! Explanation required for those not conversant with motoring jargon.

SO, THERE YOU HAVE IT – AN ALL-ELECTRIC SUPER CAR TO RANK ALONGSIDE THE VERY BEST

WLTP range refers to the official range of a vehicle determined by the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). This standardises how fuel efficiency and range are measured, aiming for more accurate and realistic figures and provides an estimated distance a vehicle can travel on a single charge.

Incidentally, the 426 miles (WLTP) provided by the new BMW iX xDrive60 M Sport sets a benchmark in an ultra-competitive environment.

Ok, job done, move on.

Redeveloped performance electronics, means the new BMW iX xDrive60 (which succeeds the BMW iX xDrive50) offers around 34 miles of additional range.

As for power, this surprisingly speedy motor benefits from 544hp (horsepower) needing only 4.6 seconds to go from a standing start to 62 mph.

Elevated trims, including a completely redesigned M Sport arrangement creates a bold exterior design presence, which continues inside the cabin.

There are seven new exterior paint finishes and the unique 23-inch M light-alloy wheels are awesome, while the BMW iconic glow for the kidney grille is another eye-catching feature, as are the quirky, push-button doors on the interior.

With an electric motor on both the front and rear axle the drive system has been fine-tuned and power electronics further developed to deliver noticeably more oomph.

As for route planning, always a key area, an intuitive user interface allows you to enter your destination in advance in the My BMW App, as well as preferred departure and arrival times and any desired charging stops. The route suggested by the BMW Maps

navigation system can then be customised to include charging stations. In an optimised route view, you are shown precise information about the availability of charging stations, the required charging time and the impact this will have on expected arrival time. So helpful.

The driver assistance systems set new standards in functionality and reliability. Driving Assistant Plus including Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go functionality, front collision warning with brake intervention and Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant and a rear camera.

THE PLUSSES CAME THICK AND FAST, BUT LET’S GET A BIG ONE OUT OF THE WAY FIRST –IT PROVIDES 426 MILES OF ELECTRIC RANGE

As for comfort, new M multifunction seats –finished in Alcantara/Sensatec or natural leather as an option – offer enhanced lateral support with a striking new design.

M Sport customers additionally benefit from a three-spoke M leather steering wheel, Dark Silver trim finishers, an Anthracite headlining, M-specific pedals and a highgloss black centre console.

Standard equipment includes an alarm system, a welcome and goodbye animation, adaptive LED headlights, comfort access, heated seats and steering wheel, while the BMW Live Cockpit Professional with headup display and Harman Kardon Surround Sound System are also available.

Based on the BMW Operating System 8.5, BMW iDrive not only offers intuitive operation using the touch function on the BMW curved display and voice control with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, but also the use of digital services such as video streaming and in-car gaming.

The BMW ID and the My BMW App provide a personalised user experience, while the BMW digital key allows for a simplified and convenient setup using the new setup card.

So, there you have it – an all-electric super car to rank alongside the very best – happy to welcome you on board as its driving assistant! n

EXCEPTIONALLY EXCITING…

Known for its unique style and jaw-dropping looks, the Porsche Cayenne zips effortlessly along major highways and winding country roads, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Peter Austin

Call it an aversion to splinters in a rather tender spot, but sitting on the fence has never been for me. I always prefer to be decisive, make a choice and go with it. Until now. Until, in fact, the other day when a friend posed this question: “Tell me, of all the cars you have tested over the past decade scripting for this wonderful magazine, which one stands out as your clear favourite?”

What a conundrum! Where’s that fence when you most need it?

Sorry, call me a coward, but I simply can’t pick an outright top dog, although it would have to be pretty darned good. Scrap that –it would have to be exceptional to surpass the Porsche Cayenne.

THIS PORSCHE SUPER MACHINE, HAILED FAR AND WIDE FOR ITS OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE, RECENTLY CLAIMED THE ‘TOWCAR OF THE YEAR 2024’ AWARD

For the stupendous Cayenne is not just a thing of great motoring beauty and prestige, but it is a car that thrills, excites and perhaps most surprisingly, surprises.

Take the fact that this Porsche super machine,

hailed far and wide for its unique style, jaw-dropping looks and outstanding performance, recently claimed the ‘Towcar of the Year 2024’ award.

Would you have expected that? And from the esteemed Caravan and Motorhome Club no less.

Those very demanding judges selected it as the cream of the crop, describing it as, ‘An incredibly capable towcar, at high speeds as well as low. Super stable.’

You see, the Cayenne maybe right up there with the elite, but it is very much ready and raring for a heap of fun along the way.

Practical and versatile, it’s happy to go along with whatever your need and mood, zipping effortlessly along the major highways or taking the tightest of country lanes in its stride. And if you want to carry a roof tent or a bike rack for a camping trip – no problem whatsoever.

Since a facelift, it now offers even ‘more luxury’ and even ‘more performance’.

You’re immediately struck by a particularly expressive and athletic appearance – it possesses an impressive front end combined with more strongly arched wings, a slinky bonnet and technical-looking headlights to emphasise the overall width.

Three-dimensionally designed tail lights, uncluttered surfaces and a smart rear bumper with integrated number plate holder characterise the back end.

The smart Cayenne S comes with a highlydigitalised display and control concept, new chassis technology and innovative high-tech features.

OFFERING THREE DIFFERENT ENGINE VERSIONS, THE CAYENNE IS CLEARLY THE SPORTIEST CAR IN ITS SEGMENT

Offering three different engine versions, the Cayenne is clearly the sportiest car in its segment, whichever version you go for – an SUV for practicality or coupé for streamlined style.

But with Porsche placing greater focus on E-Performance – a powertrain portfolio of three E-Hybrid models – I was invited to cast an eye over the Cayenne S E-Hybrid.

This all-wheel drive, automatic, plug-in is a picture of perfection, inside and out, together with a performance of outstanding proportions.

With a system output of 346 kW/470 PS, it combines dynamic inclinations with exceptional comfort and the ability to handle most everyday trips with zero local emissions.

The latest Cayenne E-Hybrid surpasses its predecessor in three respects – electric range, electric motor power and charging speed. Its sustainable hybrid strategy also optimises charging and discharge phases in different driving modes for the respective environment in which it finds itself. The result is a compelling driving experience with even greater efficiency.

The much-acclaimed 3.0-litre V6 turbo engine has been paired with an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed transmission meaning a mix of high power with low economy.

Trust me this car is no slouch, it’s able to go from 0-62mph in under five seconds and reach a top speed of 158 mph.

To avoid longer charging times, due to the larger capacity, it has an on-board AC charger as standard. With a charging capacity of 11 kW (against 7.2 kW previously) the

HV battery can be fully charged at an appropriate power source in about two hours and 40 minutes – providing a fully electric range of up to 52 miles.

The cockpit includes the Porsche Driver Experience, extended connectivity with native apps in the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, a new passenger display and high-resolution HD Matrix LED headlights.

A panoramic roof, electrically extending towbar (maximum towing load is 3,500 kg) sports tailpipes, 22-inch turbo design wheels, 14-way electric comfort seats, BOSE surround sound, multifunction steering wheel with shift paddles and heating, privacy glass, adaptive cruise control, head-up display, lane change assist – the list is endless.

And the air quality system is a bit special too. The car can use predictive navigation data to detect approaching tunnel entrances

and automatically activate air recirculation. Optionally, a sensor can detect the level of fine dust particles in the air and pass it through a fine dust filter multiple times if necessary. Furthermore, an ioniser removes many germs and pollutants from the air, which is particularly beneficial for allergy sufferers. The magnificent Porsche Cayenne –most definitely not a car to be sneezed at! n

A TASTE OF ITALY ON THE LANCASHIRE COAST

There are few things more quintessentially British than a day at the seaside – the cries of gulls overhead, the shimmer of the sea and the unmistakable joy of an ice cream cone in hand

In Blackpool, that treasured seaside indulgence has a name, Notarianni Ices. For over 90 years, this award-winning family-run gelateria has been serving generations of locals and visitors, creating not just desserts, but memories that last a lifetime.

The story of Notarianni Ices begins in the 1920s, when Italian immigrant Luigi Notarianni arrived in England, bringing with him a passion for gelato and an unwavering entrepreneurial spirit. Like many Italian families who settled in the UK during that era, Luigi saw an opportunity to introduce something new and delicious to British shores.

In 1928, Luigi opened his first ice cream parlour on Central Promenade and soon opened a second branch on Waterloo Road in Blackpool, just a stone’s throw from the bustling seafront, where the family

still trade to this day. From the very start, his mission was simple but ambitious –to make the finest, most authentic vanilla ice cream possible, using only the highestquality ingredients. That tradition remains unchanged to this day.

MADE FRESH DAILY ON-SITE, THE RECIPE HAS BEEN PASSED DOWN THROUGH FOUR GENERATIONS OF THE NOTARIANNI FAMILY

The Secret’s in the simplicity

While many modern ice cream parlours boast a rainbow of flavours and extravagant toppings, Notarianni Ices has stayed refreshingly true to its roots. It offers just one flavour – classic vanilla – but it’s far from ordinary. Rich, smooth and creamy, their ice cream is a masterclass in simplicity done to perfection.

Made fresh daily on-site, the recipe has been passed down through four generations of the Notarianni family. It’s a closely

guarded secret and a source of great pride. The milk and cream are locally sourced and there are no shortcuts or compromises, just the same meticulous method that Luigi himself would recognise.

The result is an ice cream that has stood the test of time, not through novelty, but through quality and consistency. It’s no wonder that queues regularly spill out onto the pavement, especially on warm summer days.

A family legacy

What makes Notarianni Ices truly special isn’t just the ice cream, it’s the sense of family and tradition woven into every scoop. The business is still family-owned and operated, with each generation bringing fresh energy while honouring the legacy of those who came before.

Photographs of Luigi and early family members still adorn the parlour walls, a reminder of the enduring heritage behind the counter. The staff are friendly and welcoming, many of them having served the same customers – and their children and grandchildren – for decades.

NOTARIANNI ICES REPRESENTS MORE THAN JUST A TREAT ON A SUNNY DAY – IT’S A TASTE OF TRADITION, OF FAMILY, OF SUMMER ITSELF

The current generation, led by Luca Vettese who is the fourth generation of the family, continues to preserve that old-world charm while keeping pace with modern expectations. The parlour itself has undergone thoughtful updates over the years, combining retro touches whilst transitioning to takeaway only to keep up with the demand of large queues on hot summer days, but at its heart, it remains a place where tradition reigns supreme.

More than just ice cream

Notarianni Ices has become more than a local institution – it’s a Blackpool landmark. For many, a visit to the seaside simply isn’t complete without stopping by for a cone (or a sundae) topped with raspberry sauce and a flake for the perfect ’99.

It’s also a business that gives back.

The Notarianni family has supported local charities and community events over the years, never losing sight of the town that helped them flourish. Their social media presence adds a modern touch to the brand, bringing new fans into the fold while celebrating nostalgic stories from the past.

A summer staple

In an age of constant change and fleeting trends, there’s something deeply comforting about a business that stays true to its roots. Notarianni Ices represents more than just a treat on a sunny day – it’s a taste of tradition, of family, of summer itself.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor discovering its charm, or a lifelong fan returning for your yearly fix, there’s a timeless magic to that first lick of Notarianni’s signature vanilla. It’s the flavour of Blackpool summer and a cherished part of the town’s history. n

DAN DELIGHTS DINERS

One of Preston’s best kept food secrets tucked in the heart of Preston’s historic Winckley Square, is fast becoming one of the North West’s most exciting dining destinations

Aven Restaurant is a modern British dining destination in Winckley Square, Preston. Known for its seasonal tasting menus, innovative collaborations and commitment to showcasing the best of local and national talent, Aven is redefining the city’s food scene with every service.

Last month saw the return of MasterChef: The Professionals 2024 winner, Dan Merriman, to the restaurant, with a week-long residency. Dan crafted an exclusive tasting menu that highlighted his signature style: refined, modern British cooking with playful global influences.

The event was part of a series of prestigious collaborations organised by Collective Events, the event arm of the Northern Dining Group – the team behind Aven. Founded by Oli Martin and Alex

Blamire, Northern Dining Group has been instrumental in bringing top culinary talent to Preston and building a platform for exciting, one-off dining experiences across the region.

In Aven’s intimate, stylish dining room, Dan delivered an unforgettable culinary experience. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, with each course thoughtfully introduced by knowledgeable staff. The menu was a triumph of flavour and precision – light, beautifully balanced and full of unexpected yet harmonious pairings.

COMING BACK TO AVEN FOR MY FIRST RESIDENCY SINCE WINNING MASTERCHEF HAS BEEN A REALLY SPECIAL MOMENT FOR ME

Dishes included a delicate Cornish mackerel with sea buckthorn jam and champagne sauce, followed by an XO-glazed monkfish served with shiitake dashi and kaffir lime oil. A standout was the roasted duck with apple glaze, duck leg tart and chicory jam –an elegant dish packed with depth and texture. Desserts were equally impressive, from a cultured buttermilk panna cotta with elderflower and Lancashire Parkin,

which was packed full of flavour, to a rich chocolate and cherry creation, rounded off with an indulgent beef fat and miso fudge.

Speaking about the experience, Dan said: “Coming back to Aven for my first residency since winning MasterChef has been a really special moment for me. It’s not often you get the chance to have complete freedom with a menu and really cook the food you love, exactly how you want to do it. The team here have been amazing, as always, and I’m genuinely grateful they trusted me to take over the kitchen and showcase some new ideas. Huge thanks to everyone who came down and supported it – it’s been a pleasure from start to finish.”

This was Dan’s fourth appearance at Aven and part of a growing list of sell-out events featuring MasterChef finalists and top chefs. These collaborations are firmly establishing Aven – and Preston – as a rising star on the UK’s culinary map.

“We’re so proud of what this residency achieved,” said co-founder Alex Blamire. “It’s a real milestone not just for Aven, but for the city itself.” n

Wines are clearly chosen with care. Whether you’re going for a full bottle or a single glass, you’re in good hands. The by-the-glass selection is better than you’ll find in most places, and they’re priced with fairness in mind. It takes the stress out of choosing and lets you focus on enjoying the food.

As for when to go, it really depends. A solo lunch or a quick catch-up with a friend?

PERFECTION ON A PLATE

The Rum Fox in Grindleton strikes the perfect balance of charm, flavour and hospitality. A visit here feels more like dining with friends than eating out, writes Anthony P Driver

There’s something effortlessly appealing about the Rum Fox. Maybe it’s the warmth of the welcome, where you’re greeted by name like an old friend. Maybe it’s the fact it doesn’t try too hard to be anything other than what it is, unpretentious, genuine and consistently good. Whatever it is, chefowner Bob Geldeard and his partner Kiaja Monk have created something special in the heart of Grindleton.

The vibe is spot on. Stylish without being flashy. The kind of place where you feel comfortable whether you’re dressed up for dinner or popping in for a casual lunch. The option to eat in the relaxed bar, the light-filled conservatory or the more formal dining room means you can tailor the mood to suit the moment. And yes, the retractable roof is a bit of a wild card but it works – it’s

one of those little touches that makes you smile – and absolutely perfect for the long summer days.

The food? Pretty close to faultless. My ideal three courses here are a masterclass in balance and bold flavour. First, the rabbit and black pudding – earthy and rich, with a subtle peppery warmth and just enough bite to the pudding. The rabbit is tender, gently gamey and works so well with the deeper tones of the dish.

IT’S THE KIND OF PLACE WHERE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WHETHER YOU’RE DRESSED UP FOR DINNER OR POPPING IN FOR A CASUAL LUNCH

Then Morecambe Bay sea bass – crisp skin, perfectly cooked flesh, delicate and flaky with the freshness of the sea still clinging to it. It’s served with accompaniments that enhance rather than overwhelm.

And to finish, the Amalfi lemon meringue, a dish that sings with zesty brightness. The lemon is sharp and cleansing, the meringue cloud-like and not too sweet – and there’s a lovely crumbly texture underneath that brings it all together.

Perfect. Want a hearty bite? There’s always a great pie on. Sunday roasts here are a bit of a secret gem – medium rare beef done properly, crisp roast potatoes, just the right amount of seasonal veg and a glossy, flavour-packed gravy. Leave room for dessert. You won’t regret it. n

THE PRESTON-BORN STAR FINDING HIS VOICE IN LA

At just 23, Harvey Brittain is already making waves as one of the UK’s brightest rising music stars, writes Ali Gudgeon

Asinger-songwriter, multiinstrumentalist and producer from Preston, Harvey blends the earnest storytelling of British pop with the polish of American chart music. Think Harry Styles meets Charlie Puth, with a hint of Coldplay’s emotive anthems.

Harvey’s journey started in a modest front room in Preston, where a battered upright piano at his grandma’s house sparked a lifelong passion. “My dad was a bit of a musical chameleon,” he laughs. “He played guitar, drums, piano – I just picked it up by ear.” By the age of 10, Harvey was already recording jazz instrumentals in his bedroom and experimenting with harmonies in GarageBand.

PRESTON WILL ALWAYS BE WHERE I’M FROM. AND A LOT OF MY WRITING STILL DRAWS ON THOSE EARLY YEARS IN ENGLAND, PLAYING PUB GIGS AND FIGURING OUT WHO I WAS

At 16, Harvey supported British jazz icon Courtney Pine locally on his 2018 UK tour, building a grassroots following. But his big leap came in 2020 when he won a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. “Getting that offer was mind-blowing,” he says. “But I couldn’t afford it, even with the scholarship.”

Enter bestselling author Lee Child, who offered to fund the remainder of Harvey’s tuition after hearing one of his demos. “He changed my life. No strings attached. He just told me to pay it forward. He’s been a huge mentor and friend to me. He even came to my graduation last year!”

Post-graduation, Harvey moved to Los Angeles, where he’s since carved out a growing fanbase, both in-person and online. His 2024 single ‘made u look’ has been

making waves and earlier this year his song ‘Eyes Shut’ was championed on Radio 1’s Future Pop. “That was huge,” Harvey beams. “Mollie King said she loved everything about the track. That kind of belief keeps you going.”

Despite the glitter of LA, Harvey remains grounded. “I still go back to Preston a lot. It’s part of me,” he says. “Preston will always be where I’m from. And a lot of my writing still draws on those early years in England, playing pub gigs and figuring out who I was. So even if I’m physically in LA, creatively I feel like I have one foot in both places.”

His music blends slick production with raw emotion – an honest reflection of a life straddling two worlds. “Some days I’m in the studio writing. Others I’m livestreaming from my bedroom to fans across the globe,” he explains. With regular TikTok lives and sold-out shows in London, LA and New York, Harvey’s DIY approach is clearly resonating.

Musical influences range from Oscar Peterson and Chick Corea to The 1975 and Jamie Cullum. “I love artists who evolve sonically but stay emotionally honest,” he says. “That’s what I aim for. Songs you can scream to in the car or cry to on a walk.” Harvey writes and co-produces all his own material, often pulling inspiration from real-life moments, texts, dreams and conversations. “Some songs come from emotional whiplash,” he says. “If something makes you feel emotion – even discomfort –it’s probably worth writing about.”

IF SOMETHING MAKES YOU FEEL EMOTION –EVEN DISCOMFORT –IT’S PROBABLY WORTH WRITING ABOUT

So far, he’s released around 10 singles but has written more than 200 songs behind the scenes. His live performances have sold out across major cities, with standout shows at LA’s Hotel Café and Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right, where he opened for actress and singer Mckenna Grace. “People connect with the honesty,” he says. “That’s what matters to me most.”

Harvey has just released his debut mixtape ‘my heart keeps score’, which came out at the end of June. The eight-track collection was co-produced with industry giants like Dan O (Lana Del Rey, Maroon 5) and Alex Beitzke (James Arthur) and it marks his most personal work yet. “They feel like diary entries from the past year,” he shares.

The future looks bright for Harvey Brittain. With collaborations on the horizon, including one with Salem Ilese (of ‘Mad at Disney’ fame), and a fanbase that grows daily, his steady rise shows no signs of slowing.

“I’m just grateful,” he says. “This isn’t easy and I don’t take a second of it for granted. If someone out there feels something real when they hear one of my songs, then I’ve done my job.” n

MAGIC IN HIS VEINS, BLACKPOOL IN HIS HEART

A breathtaking finale marked the remarkable journey for a Blackpool born and bred magician whose iconic Britain’s Got Talent auditions left audiences spellbound and speechless from the off, writes Katie Hammond

The end of May saw 25-year-old master illusionist Harry Moulding crowned the winner of ITV’s ultimate talent show, after his own unique and breathtaking brand of heartfelt magic held audiences rapt throughout the selection process.

The relatable and down-to-earth Cleveleys lad also left judges Bruno Tonioli, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden, rap star KSI and Simon Cowell open-mouthed, with the entertainment world’s guru, Simon, telling

him: “You’re so good, yet so humble. You’ve got guts. This show is about finding people like you. Week by week, you’ve been incredible.”

Harry’s love of magic was firmly ingrained

I THINK IT’S JUST SO SPECIAL THAT THE SHOW PROVIDES A CHANCE FOR REAL PEOPLE TO SHOWCASE THEIR TALENT IN FRONT OF GIANTS IN THE INDUSTRY WHO CAN GENUINELY MAKE DREAMS COME TRUE

by the age of 10, when he was bought his first magic set after being completely enthralled at a local magic show.

He says: “From the moment that show began, I was hooked and bitten by the bug. It was Christmas time and my mum bought me my first magic set – from then on, I was interested in nothing else. My mates would call for me to play out and I didn’t want to go as my mind was somewhere else – it was just practice, practice, practice.”

Harry’s hard work and dedication to his craft paid off and aged 14, he was offered work experience at the world-renowned House of Illusion in Salou, Spain, where he was then taken on full-time at the age of 16.

He explains how his roots in the entertainment capital of the UK ultimately gave him the best start and the confidence to chase his dreams at such a tender age: “Blackpool is genuinely the best place to live and I’m so lucky to have grown up here. It’s home to the largest magic convention in the world, with thousands of amazing

magicians making the pilgrimage to be here – I couldn’t have asked for a better place to grow as a performer and hone my skills.”

It was actually Harry’s dad who was caught completely off guard when the Britain’s Got Talent juggernaut came to town to audition hundreds of hopefuls. Harry teamed up in secret with his dad’s girlfriend to get tickets, with dad in total shock when his son walked on stage to face the judges.

Harry continues: “I think it’s just so special that the show provides a chance for real people to showcase their talent in front of giants in the industry who can genuinely make dreams come true. The whole process was just a dream from start to finish and I can’t speak highly enough of the team and judges for being so amazing throughout the whole experience.”

BLACKPOOL IS GENUINELY THE BEST PLACE TO LIVE AND I’M SO LUCKY TO HAVE GROWN UP HERE. I COULDN’T HAVE ASKED FOR A BETTER PLACE TO GROW AS A PERFORMER AND HONE MY SKILLS

With jaw-dropping performances including the final, which involved accurately guessing the judges chosen cards mid-air, whilst skydiving, the combination of adrenaline and showmanship was a running theme throughout the auditions. Other feats saw Harry choosing random members of the audience to showcase his mind-reading abilities, culminating in a romantic proposal from Paris for one audience member and lighting up Blackpool Tower with Simon Cowell’s randomly chosen playing card suit and number.

A proud member of the Magic Circle, Harry will undoubtably be exploring some incredible opportunities as the offers roll in after the iconic winning moment. Harry dropped to his knees, overcome with pure emotion when Ant and Dec announced him as the 2025 BGT winner in the final at London’s Eventim Apollo.

Along with the coveted £250,000 prize, the win also secures Harry’s spot at the Royal Variety Performance, where he will perform in front of the King and Queen at the Royal Albert Hall in November, where he says plans may include involving the King, himself a member of the Magic Circle, in the evening’s entertainment.

With industry insiders speculating that a future ITV Magic Special could be

in the pipeline, along with a possible West End residency, or even a Vegas headline opportunity, Harry’s incredible stunts are set to delight audiences for a long time to come.

So, what are the immediate plans for the next few months?

Harry continues: “That would be telling! Being a magician means I’m very good at keeping secrets, but I’m planning some massively exciting things which I can’t wait to share with you all soon!”

As he prepares for the royal performance of a lifetime, his charisma, showmanship and genuine passion for his craft shine from within. From a Blackpool stage to the national spotlight, Harry has truly made his mark and whatever comes next could well establish him as one of Britain’s most exciting modern magicians. n

SUMMER NIGHTS

Grease was the word as an all-new stage spectacular, Grease the Musical, danced into Blackpool Grand Theatre last month.

Photography: Danny With A Camera

Ever since John Travolta was left stranded at the drive in, branded a fool by Olivia Newton John way back in 1978, Grease has been the one that musical theatre fans want, Danny and Sandy, everybody’s favourite High School sweethearts.

What an electrifying performance from the Pitlochry Festival Theatre! The new production featured a talented cast of actor-musicians and transported audiences back to the summer nights of the 1950s and to Rydell High. The high-energy show was packed with all the classic songs and scenes, a real feel-good night out. This actor-musician adaptation of Grease the Musical was far from a conventional

nod to the 1978 cult classic. With the cast performing as the on-stage band, the production burst with inventive flair and musical depth. Alexander Service (Danny)

impressed with his electric guitar work, while Lancashire-based Leah Jamieson (Jan) brought infectious energy on the saxophone – together showcasing the cast’s remarkable range as

performers, musicians, singers and dancers. Adding a modern twist to the production, Sandy’s character, played by Blythe Jandoo, sported sleek, dark locks and Fiona Wood (Rizzo) had red hair in a bold choice for the sarcastic leader of the Pink Ladies. Blythe’s vocals were stunning, although she was one of the characters not to play her own instrument. The actor-musicianship element of the show gave it an interesting angle, delivering a musical experience rich in talent and passion.

It may surprise some to learn the stage show predates the movie by some eight years. The musical received its World Premiere in 1971 at Chicago’s Kingston Mines Nightclub. A year later a revised version debuted on Broadway where it ran until 1980, racking up 3,388 performances, at the time the longest run in Broadway history. It returned to Broadway in 1994 and again in 2007. In the UK meanwhile, it had its West End premiere in 1973, returning in 1979, 1993, 2001, 2002 2007, 2022 and 2023.

Adam Knight, Chief Executive of Blackpool Grand Theatre, said: “Sam Hardie’s new actor-musician staging of Grease acts as a catalyst to inspire the next generation of theatre-makers, providing greater insight and access for our Grand Young Company and Young Technicians into how a professional production is mounted, supporting local skills development and creating employment opportunities.”

Blackpool’s Grease was a vibrant reimagining of a classic that has hooked audiences for over 50 years – nostalgic yet refreshing. With live music on stage, energetic performances and some clever staging, it offered a genuinely uplifting evening, leaving everyone humming the tunes and wanting to join the afterparty. n
