W

ords have been a part of my life for what feels like forever. While that can be said for everyone who lives, words have been real catalysts for many new chapters in my life. From that teenager that needed an outlet and expression tool, to the young adult who needed to voice just how she was feeling about a friend ... From the almost newlywed who had to write her vows, to the entrepreneur who realised that words could become a proper business ... Having THE LAST WORD is what we all strive towards. We want what we say, what we write,

what we publish, and what we advertise, to be memorable. We want to make an impact. We want to leave a legacy. And, if you have brains in your head and feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself any direction you choose. And, the right words can help too. (Thanks, Dr. Seuss) This month, we delve into words in their written form, in their verbal form and those words, that while silent, speak volumes. Yours in writing,

Words are free.

It i s h o w y o u u s e t h e m th at m a y c o s t y o u BY Silke Rathbone

We find the theme of words for the magazine this month quite apt in relation to what we do at Labour Excel. Words are a large part of our business. What was said? What could be said? What those words could mean if used in the wrong context. How words can be twisted and why we insist on a contract to protect all parties concerned. Words are essentially the tools we use in law. Language holds the utmost importance in legal matters. Judges ascribe to words to make their cases clear. Lawyers must ensure they use the correct words to effectuate the wishes of their clients. The one part of our studies when working towards becom6

ing an attorney involves writing skills. If an attorney has the ability to write well, they can lay a solid foundation for all the documents they will need, such as arguments, contracts, and legal letters. We use written communication as a primary tool to distribute and record. We strive to produce clear and concise words that remove all ambiguity and make intentions known. Further to this, very often, legal words can be confusing for the layman. With that in mind, I always try to help my clients to understand what a contract involves in a language they can understand. While we can't avoid legal jargon, we can still explain nicely. Rather, we are taking legal words and bringing them to the table in easy, engaging language.

Silke Rathbone is the Principal Partner at Labour Excel and has both an HR and Law Degree, which is most unusual (generally, most have one or the other). Labour Excel specialises in both Labour Law matters and those involving HR.

Fact or Fiction? Myths. Conspiracy theories. They surround us. They have caused people to riot and cause mayhem. And, sometimes they consume us. No matter the subject in question, and no matter whether you want to partake in the debate or not, you will always be curious. And, we typically ask, "IS IT THO?"

This month, we explore those words that, while they say one thing, they can mean another thing ... Follow the breadcrumbs Immediately, we think of “Hansel and Gretel” from the “Grimms’ Fairy Tales”. These two little kids are taken deep into the forest by their evil step-mother with the plan to lose them. Hansel, the clever-dick, leaves a trail of breadcrumbs and the pair are able to find their way home. Let's look at a more recent "follow the breadcrumbs' angle ... QAnon throws us this term 8

Yes, it involves Trump (no surprises) and, in this case, high-profile Satan-worshipping pedophiles against which "Q" says Trump is waging a war. The messages, or "drops” and “crumbs”, as they are referred to, alleges crimes of a sup posed “cabal” within the elite, or to the progress of Trump’s Winvestigation into the secret war (known as the “cbts”, or “calm before the storm”). Each crumb is then eagerly dissected online by the theory’s growing, cult-like following. (compliments of economist.com)

but with quite the opposite endgame. Rather than lead you home, the trail of breadcrumbs will take you further down bizarre rabbit holes online.

That’s what she said ... ZOË BROWN

Interview by Lisa Bell 10

I

t is with a deep excited breath and a thankful heart that we bring to you the vivacious and girl-next-door, Zoë Brown. You all know her voice on KFM as the traffic reporter and sidekick to Carl Wastie on the FlashDrive, and watched her smile and gush on Expresso, but as we found out from our interview, there is so much more to Zoë Brown!

my honours year as a student, I got approached by KFM to do a weekend show, and that is where the journey started. I feel like I stumbled across it as it was never a lifelong dream to be a presenter. Many people are very shocked I’m in media, as I am actually a very quiet and shy person. Q2 – What else does Zoë Brown do besides traffic on KFM?

Q1– How did you get into media?

I've been doing some Afrikaans work, and that's been a big challenge for me. So, that was quite fun, and at the start of the year, I had co-hosted a show with Amalia Uys. She's a brilliant actress, and it was Trap! Dis My Huis. And, I'm waiting for more Afrikaans work to come my way if I can put it that way. In terms of TV, I've done a bit of appearances here and there, guest on shows. And, yes, the next thing for me is hopefully my own show or another Afrikaans show. And, then, in terms of what else I do, yes, I do traffic on KFM, and then a lot of my work has also been social media campaigns, hosting events. I used to be an MC. I recently hosted a virtual event, which I think a lot of people have been gearing towards because there's still so much uncertainty. And, then I do a lot of charity

I find it so funny that you say influencers slash celebrity because I don’t feel like that. I feel like a student at Stellenbosch, and that is where it all started for me. I see myself as this ordinary girl that has an extraordinary job. I studied International Relations at Stellenbosch, and I thought I was going to take it into the journalism field, but when I joined MFM 92.6 (campus radio), I fell in love with the radio medium, and while I was there, I was asked, have you considered doing TV Presenting, and I was like, no, I haven’t. Many had told me that I should, so I gave it a go. I did an audition for Presenter Search on 3, and they were looking for three different presenters on three different shows on SABC3, and that is how I managed to get my spot on Expresso. During Q&A

work. I have a lot of campaigns that are close to my heart, and that takes up a bit of my time. I am a proud ambassador for the Children's Hospital Trust. They are the people that raise funds for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. I am also a proud ambassador of the Sunflower Fund as well as WWF South Africa. Q3 – Other ambassador work? Yes, I am an ambassador for EasiHair Pro - a fabulous collaboration between a girl that has been wearing extensions since the age of 18 to partner with a really cool brand, and it just fits so well into my lifestyle because it's a product I've been using since leaving high school.

Q5 – Are you a smart worker, or do you give pure hard work?

Q4 – What makes you and your brand unique?

I wish I were a smart worker – for the longest time, I was a hard worker, and only now I’m becoming a smart worker. I didn’t always believe in myself, and I worked super crazy to prove myself. Lockdown has also taught me to take a step back, and there was a definite mind shift to becoming this smart worker. I’m managing my time more. I don’t say yes to everything, and I ask myself, “Is

To sum up my brand, I am the girl next door. I can’t see myself fitting into a place like Johannesburg! Their way of life is high paced and way more boujie and I don’t think I’d ever be able to fit in there. I’m also very mindful of the number of young girls that follow me on social media, therefore I always try and stay as true to myself as possible when posting.

12

Q&A

this something I would normally do?” I would recommend the book by Tim Ferriss called the “The 4-Hour Workweek”. This book was actually recommended to me by Julz from Goodluck! Although a four hour week isn’t really possible for me right now, there are some good tips in the book. It comes down to paying your dues first (like radio shows at 3 in the morning). It creates an appreciation for the industry I'm in..

– 6 weeks – I loved how I felt after each workout - I felt good – I had no dread – I lost weight over lockdown – mostly because of the meal plan – small changes – my love for fitness got reignited. And, I’ve got smart with my eating - cooking in bulk – freezing – and having choices.

Q6 – Advice for the 18-year old version of yourself? I would tell 18-year-old Zoë – Not to be afraid to take some chances – step out of her comfort zone – 18-year-old Zoë was super conservative, never broke rules – was the teacher’s pet – I would tell her to do things a bit more carefree – It’s easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission. Q7 – What do you see as the key element to maintaining a healthy lifestyle? For a long time, I had a personal trainer twice a week and recently realised that style of training doesn’t suit my mindset. About three or four weeks into lockdown, I found a program that I could do at home – 30 minutes 13

Q8 – What do you value most in life?

Q10– What is your superpower? Both human and superhero style?

Honesty – I feel that for a lot of different spheres in my life, that was missing. I want to know everything – rather than find out via the grapevine.

Superhero power – I wish I could be in two places at once. My real-life superpower, what is that? I think it's empathy – I feel deeply for others. Their loss feels like a loss to me. And showing compassion too. We need more of that in this world.

Q9 – What failures in your life have taught you valuable lessons?

Q11 – What does the future hold for Zoë Brown?

Most recent failure – I went for an audition for a prime time TV show, and it involved cooking. I was nailing the interview until they asked me how I felt about cooking – and I said I hate cooking – I was clearly so comfortable, I was too honest. The lesson learned is to be savvier and keep that in mind that the client has a product they want to sell, and I must toe the line sometimes. What else? I have had a few disappointing moments, but I don’t allow those to define me, as well as the highs. I don’t allow them to define who I am.

Yes, I am the traffic girl on KFM’s FlashDrive. I do want to have my own show sometime. And, I do like the idea of going abroad for a stint or two. And I would love to try acting. I love the journey Anne Hathaway has taken – how she has grown in her roles. Meryl Streep – love her style! And, locally, Kim Engelbrecht. Acting is on my bucket list for the new year. I left the Expresso show in 2019 to pursue Afrikaans TV work and you’ll certainly be seeing more of me on your Feel Good Breakfast show in the weeks to come.

As a presenter, I made a point of saying that’s what I do and not who I am. I have put a few measures in place to protect myself, such as limiting the amount of comments I check on a post, and I make a point of not reading any DMs, because people tend to be nasty in private.

14

A huge thank you to Zoë for taking time out to chat with us, and we look forward to seeing what exciting adventures she gets herself up to. Q&A

“Chew your words before you spit them out!”

ho doesn’t want to have the last word? Having the last word means you win, right? Having the last word means what you said will be longlasting and memorable, right? who has ideas that merit attention.” To be a thought leader in today’s world, you start off with words, as many have done before; instead, now you can reach your audience; your followers, through digital means. You use words with the underlie of your knowledge and experience to convince and, more importantly, to educate others. You do this without assuming that being a thought leader is like placing a mantel on a shelf. Thought leader status is based on market perception earned over time and assigned to you, as an unofficial stature, by others. The makeup of a Thought Leader can be summed up like this: your audience. THE THOUGHT LEADER One way to ensure you get the last word is to become a thought leader. Joel Kurtzman, now part of Milken Institute, invented the term in 1994 using it as the theme for a series of interviews he conducted as Editor in Chief of Strategy + Business magazine. He defined a thought leader as “someone

And, make the words your own, or as far as you possibly can. In this digital world, where time is of the essence, I understand you cannot always use your own words out there and will call on an expert to do the creation for you. That is perfectly fine, too, so long as you are confident in their ability to find your voice and use it well. LASTLY, WORDS HAVE POWER

THE JOURNEY OF A THOUGHT LEADER Generally, becoming a thought leader happens organically and isn’t a preconceived idea or plan. It is not to say that you cannot realise you have the potential to educate and offer value, but you cannot force your status to this level. You can start to use your knowledge and essentially power in creative ways, with words leading the adventure.

It’s all fair and well to have the last word, but remember that words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. (not our words – compliments of Huffington post). Do take time to choose your words to encourage rather than to distract. Again from the Huff, “Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble.”

GET READY TO USE YOUR WORDS While you may have your words down pat, you need to know where to use them. 20

GETTING YOU THERE ... ONE BUSINESS FOCUS AT A TIME!

GONE IN 60 SECONDS LEARNING HOW TO ARTICULATE WHAT IT IS YOU DO

H

ave you ever met a business owner or employee of a business who struggled to describe what they do? Think elevator pitch or networking meeting where you get to introduce your business in 30 or 60 seconds. How confident are you that you can articulate your message? For a moment, imagine the person hearing YOUR “elevator pitch” and how confusing it must be for them if you can’t articulate what your own business does. This could be a customer, employee, supplier, or just a friend.

22

One thing we emphasise with our clients and push them to do is define (writing out) the key elements of their business. This forces them to sit down and articulate what they do so that they can easily share. They can then say what they do, how their business operates, why customers buy their products or services, and tell their story. It helps them build around a fundamental story and elaborate from there. If you know how to articulate this, you can share these defined elements with staff and

therefore have a standardised message shared across your business and your market. Lastly, as a business owner, you are more than likely trying to remove yourself from many operational activities; this becomes far easier when you've taken the time to “chew your words”, define what your business does, and then “spit them out”.

By Andre du Toit

I

’m not sure how it happened, but somewhere between the ages of 40 and 50, I lost the answers to some of the biggest questions in life. You see, when I was 40, at the peak of my physical strength and in a great job with a beautiful wife, I knew it all. Ask me any question, and I had an opinion. I also was not shy about sharing that opinion. The years went by. I became a little wiser, a little older. I

26

stopped seeing things in black and white, and there were tinges of colour appearing everywhere, and slowly my hard-held convictions about almost anything began to change. I noticed that not everything was as sharply defined as I thought it was, and there were exceptions to every rule. Reasons why the colour of things needed to change. Not always black. Not always white and definitely not grey.

THERE IS MAGIC IN WORDS

At my 50th birthday party, I decided to give a short speech entitled “Things I Know For Sure,” shamelessly stolen from a book by Oprah Winfrey. Surely after half a century, there must be some gems, some pearls of wisdom that I could share with my friends and family. I thought. I pondered. I cogitated. Nothing! Surely there must be something. Eventually, something started formulating in my mind, and it was clear. Not versions or variations but an absolute truth.

“The words that you speak become your reality.”

where our fears become as real as can be imagined, the soothing, kind voice of a loved one or friend can be as effective as a tranquiliser. We can use words to build someone up. Try it. Tell your beloved that they are amazing, wonderful. A provider bar none. Mean it. Say it with conviction. And watch what happens. It is almost magical. Slowly, they start to believe it. They begin to think it, and before you know it, they become it. It is not empty flattery, but the ability to find the best qualities in others and remind them that their superpowers create superheroes out of the most ordinary people.

Nothing more and nothing less. Possibly the best and only advice I could give someone without fear that it would be wrong or misinterpreted and that there was a different meaning.

Where you are today, your circumstances, the people who surround you, whether good or bad, are the fruit of the words that you have shot out of your mouth like bullets for years.

You see, 50 years of experience has taught me that words can be as powerful as swords and as comforting as a mother’s touch. Used as a weapon, there is nothing that can cut as deeply or hurt your victim more than sharpened, hardened, and cruel words. Words that once uttered can inflict damage more permanent than that of a mere knife. Conversely, in the dead of night,

Whether you’re young or old, I want to challenge you to start listening to the way you speak to other people. Are your words designed to encourage, motivate, build self-esteem in others, or are they jibes which say more about you than others? If you want to change your relationship with your beloved, tell her how much you love her.

COACH ME!

27

Remind them of all her or his good points. Find opportunities to chat. About good things, about your dreams and aspirations, about your past and your future still to be enjoyed. Mould your children into strong individuals with a positive sense of worth of who they are and use the magic of words of encouragement, of guidance, of wisdom. Almost everyone carries the scars of cruel words uttered by a teacher, a “friend,” or even a parent. However, the real magic when speaking positive words about the world around you is how these things become attracted to you. It’s so easy to dwell in the negative, to complain. But, the most significant danger is staying in that place for too long, when the magic kicks in, and before you know it, that space becomes your reality. Become a force for good, for encouragement. A voice that dispenses kindness and empathy and, most of all, positivity and watch your world change.

Andre Du Toit, aka The Big Positive Guy, is all about words of affirmation. Andre brings with him many years of building up teams and individuals. With a background in financial analytics, reinsurance, and information technology, Andre can take you from a layman to a professional in just minutes. ave you been looking for a place where you can simply kick off your shoes, take in the beauty of nature and get down to the real old-fashioned way of living? Well, look no further than Schaftplaas, conveniently situated just a few kilometres outside of holiday-makers-heaven Langebaan, and just about an

hour or so from Cape Town. As you drive up the dirt road leading into Schaftplaas, you are greeted with beautiful shady trees and a sense that you have come home. The friendly dogs “baljaar” around the car, and Alet Kruger, the owner, welcomes you with an open and homely smile. After a warm meet and greet, we 31

were taken to the cottages and even given a choice of where to stay for the night. With names like Supreme Dream, Suzi Q, Oematoi, and Oompie Gert Ox, you have to know the history is deeply set in the “old way” of South Africa. The cottages neatly neighbour each other, and each one has a unique and intriguing layout and décor. We must have spent at least 5 to 10 minutes just wandering around, taking in the memorabilia and history that makes up each cottage.

32

Reception

Alet gave us a little history of how Schaftplaas came to be the rustic wedding and corporate venue it is today. With experience living and working on farms, Alet and her now late husband decided to buy Schaftplaas back in 1993, mostly to get away from the city and because they loved the country life. While they advertise the venue for weddings and corporate functions, Schaftplaas can be adapted to any form of accommodation you want.

WEDDINGS AND CORPORATE FUNCTIONS Equipped with a small 150-year old chapel that can seat 70 and a lovely outdoor area called Japie’s se gat, you can also choose to have your wedding ceremony at Schaftplaas, as well as the actual reception. The boma-style space where the reception takes place can accommodate a Bedouin tent and can seat 200 with outdoor tables and chairs. For non-seated functions, Alet can go up to 500.

We spoke about the possibility of retreats, in the way of yoga, writers, and hunting groups. Weddings do form a large part of their business target, but when you take time to walk around, you start to see the potential for so much more.

To add to the charm, Alet can provide a horse-drawn carriage to transport the bride to the wedding, and if you want to get deep into nature, you can have your ceremony in the veld amongst the blue gum trees. The sky really is the limit at Schaftplaas.

found that it takes the stress off nervous brides and even for corporate functions. Everyone can just enjoy the festivities, and Alet will handle the rest. Be sure to get in touch with Alet at Schaftplaas to secure your overnight accommodation or venue booking.

Corporate functions go down well, allowing possibly stiff and suited colleagues a chance to let their hair down and just get down to grassroots, as it were. Alet is open to accommodating whatever theme or style of corporate function you want.

Start with Why by Simon Sinek START WITH WHY shows that the leaders who've had the greatest influence in the world all think, act, and communicate the same way -- and it's the opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be led, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY.

Once your job description is prepared, apply the 5 Stages of Recruitment: •C andidate Search: Internally (staff referrals and succession planning) and externally (online recruitment, advertising, and networking).

•A pplication Process: Will you be receiving candidates via an application form or personal CVs? • S election: Shortlist potential candidates and then assess them through interviews, competency questions, and even role play. • A ppointment: After references and other checks have been done, make an offer in writing. • I nduction: Give the new staff member an outline of the role requirements, orientation, and HR-related information.
