Lesson 1

In Lesson 1, children will discuss the different types of fruits they know and will choose which fruits will go in to the dish they are going to prepare for a party.

Learning Intention

To explore different types of fruit.

Success Criteria

• I can name different types of fruit.

• I can explain where fruit comes from and describe the taste.

• I can choose what fruit to use in a fruit dish to bring to a party.

Resources

You will need: Post-It Notes, a fipchart paper, fruit name fashcards and the following fruit - bananas, apples, oranges, strawberries, blueberries and kiwis.

Differentiated Activities

Task A - Can you choose what type of dish you are going to make? Write down a list of the ingredients and equipment you will need to make your dish and write down the steps you will be doing to make it.

Can you explain the benefts of your dish and why it would be a great dish for children at the party to enjoy? Write down a list of other types of food/dishes that you could bring to the party.

Task B - Choose what type of dish you are going to make and draw a picture of it.

Can you write down a list of the ingredients and equipment you will need to make your dish and write down the steps you will be doing to make it.

Task C - Choose what type of dish you are going to make.

Can you draw the fruits you are going to use and label them using the word cards? Pick the words cards with the names of the materials you will need to make your dish.

Extension: Can you verbally explain how you are going to prepare your dish to an adult?

Key Vocabulary

Healthy - something that is good for your body and that helps you stay well and ft.

Raw - not cooked.

Dish - food that is going to be served.

Equipment - items that will be used to make something.

Assessment Questions

• Which different types of fruits can you name?

• Where do these fruits come from and how can you describe the taste?

• Which fruits did you choose and how are you going to present your dish?

Fruit and Nutrition Fair

Organise a fair where children set up booths representing different fruits. Each booth can include information about the fruit’s health benefts, nutritional value, and creative ways to incorporate it into a healthy diet. Children can engage visitors, including parents and other classes, by offering fruit samples, distributing informational brochures, or conducting mini demonstrations.

Fruit Quiz Show

Divide the class into teams and host a lively quiz show where children answer questions related to fruits, their origins, nutritional facts, and preparation techniques. The teams can earn points for correct answers, and the winning team can receive small fruit-related prizes.

Master Chef Fruit Dish Showcase

Each child presents their own fruit salad or fruit smoothie to a panel of judges. The judges evaluate the dishes based on taste, presentation, and creativity using predetermined criteria. Children explain their recipe choices, techniques, and the story behind their creation. Judges taste and evaluate each dish, providing feedback and scoring. Winners are announced based on the scores, and certifcates or small prizes are awarded to recognise their culinary skills.

End of Unit Assessment Fruit Frenzy

In this unit, children will design, make and evaluate a product for a user for specifc purpose.

This term, we will learn how to create a fruit dish like smoothies or fruit kebabs using a variety of fresh fruit. Also to use technical vocabulary relevant to the project.

Design: Design a simple mechanism, structure and food product

Make: Make levers and structures with tools and materials

Evaluate: Make simple evaluations on how the product works

Technical Knowledge: Learn how to use levers and make things stronger

Cooking: Cut, mix and squeeze to make a fruit-based product Nutrition: Understand healthy food choices and where fruit comes from
