from DT Summary
Objectives for children working below the National Curriculum requirements for Year 1
The Lion S-Scales provide a framework for learning that bridges the gap between the Government’s new Engagement Model and the KS1 and KS2 curriculum for Design and Technology.
S1
• Begin to assemble components for an activity, for example, a glue spreader, grouping all the bricks together. • Explore different options, for example, deciding which fruit to mix into a fruit salad.
S3
• Begin to select and use tools more independently, for example, cutting materials. • Begin to offer responses to making, for example, deciding on the shape and colour they want.
• Use a wider range of tools, for example, joining components together to make a simple product. • Begin to make decisions about what they will do and how, for example, choosing to use PVA glue instead of a glue stick.
S2
• Watch others using basic tools and copying the actions, sometimes with support, for example, a paint roller or a mixing spoon. • Demonstrate simple preferences for products, materials and ingredients, for example, selecting glitter for a card or a filling for a sandwich.
S4
Design and Technology Key Stage 1 National Curriculum requirements
When designing and making, pupils should be taught to:
Design
• Design purposeful, functional and appealing products for themselves and other users based on design criteria. • Generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through talking, drawing, templates, mock-ups and, where appropriate, information and communication technology.
Make
• Select from and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks [for example, cutting, shaping, joining and finishing]. • Select from and use a wide range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their characteristics.
Evaluate
• Explore and evaluate a range of existing products. • Evaluate their ideas and products against design criteria.
Technical knowledge
• Build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable. • Explore and use mechanisms [for example, levers, sliders, wheels and axles], in their products.
Cooking and Nutrition
• Use the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet to prepare dishes. • Understand where food comes from.
Progression Across the Curriculum KS1
Design
Design purposeful, functional and appealing products for different users
• Explore a range of products in context, for example, home, school, gardens, playgrounds, local community. • Discuss the products they want to design and make. • Talk about who their product is for, for example, themselves or a friend. • Describe what their products are for. • Describe how their product will work. • Describe how their product is suitable for the user. • Use simple design criteria to help develop their ideas.
Generate, develop and discuss their ideas • Use their own knowledge of products and experiences to generate ideas. • Develop designs through drawings and discussions. • Use materials, construction kits, templates and sketches to model their ideas. • Use ICT to develop and communicate their ideas.

Preparing to make
Practical skills and techniques
• Select tools to use from a range of tools and equipment. • Select suitable materials to use.
• Use tools and equipment safely. • Understand basic elements of food hygiene. • Use a range of materials and components including: • construction materials and kits • mechanical components • textiles • food ingredients. • Measure, mark and cut materials. • Assemble, join and mix different materials. • Use finishing techniques to create a finished product.
