Lesson 1
In this lesson, the children will investigate what the internet is used for and three simple ways to stay safe online.
Learning Intention
To know how to behave online.
Success Criteria
• I can explain what the internet is and what I can do on it.
• I can compare how staying safe online is similar to staying safe in the real world.
• I can explain the rules for staying safe on the Internet.
Resources
You will need A3 or A4 paper, pencils and pictures that show ways to be safe online and in the real world for the children to sort.
Differentiated Activities
Task A - Write a list of rules to explain what to do and not to do when using the internet. How will you make sure you stay safe?
Task B - Create a poster about the three rules you must follow when using the internet.
Task C - Sort the pictures into two groups - how to stay safe online and in the real world.

Internet - connects millions of computers around the world.
Computer - a technological device for working with information.
Rules - a guide to tell us what to do or not to do.
Online - while connected to a computer or under computer control.

To display the learning achieved throughout this unit, the children should have a showcase of their paintings.
Resources
For the Gallery show you will need portraits printed and backed and for the ‘Guess Who’ game you will need card size portraits printed.
Christmas Bazaar
You could have the portraits turned into Christmas cards, mugs or baubles to be sold at the Christmas Bazaar.
Gallery Show
The teacher should have the portraits printed and backed.
Children from a different year group or parents should be invited to attend the gallery opening showing children’s portraits.
Guess Who?
You could take all the pictures and turn them into a game of ‘Guess Who?’ for the children to play with.
