Summer Greetings What a sigh of relief that the earth stayed in its orbit as well as the Sun, and that we can enjoy the warmth and sunshine hopefully combined with some holidays with family and friends for most of us. Many speak of this year 2023, having been a long and challenging year in many respects, locally and geo-politically, impacting us all on levels we don’t always register. We are ready to take a break to restore and reset our inner GPS for a new 2024 year. It’s a delight to hear the children shrieking next door at the Wynberg Municipal Swimming pool. And also good to have the summer solstice celebration in a few days combined with the festive season in the Cape, with all its harvest of a variety of ripe fruits, ready to delight the many tourists that seem to have arrived, bringing some rebalance in our local economy – as all this assists the mini regeneration cycle. For this issue, we have chosen to feature Yoga Instructor Amanda Ramcharitar on the front page, combined with

Interfaith for Africa Interfaith Ministry training is now available in Africa for the first time ever. All Paths Divinity School, an online Interfaith Seminary, and Gate House Spiritual Centre, have collaborated to launch their first Africa Cohort in April 2024, starting a two-year program towards ordination as an interfaith/ interspiritual minister. The course is tailored to African time zones and conditions with the cohort meeting in-person annually. Although the training is essentially self-paced, the Africa cohort will be encouraged to walk arm in arm and form a cohesive support group. Rev Berry Behr will be walking alongside, as class mentor. Not every minister stands behind a pulpit. All Paths Interfaith ministry ordination encourages the graduate to dive deeply into their own spirituality and to serve in whatever capacity is most appropriate for them. This training is for anyone who feels called to a life of sacred service and deeper understanding, beyond faith, culture, or belief.

Universal Worship, which embodies the unity of all religions, every second and fourth Sunday of the month, 10.30 am at the Sufi Temple, Newlands. All welcome. 183 Campground Road, Claremont (approach via Mariendahl Road and Kinkel Way) Enquiries: Pauline 0716754345

All Paths was founded by South Africans Andre and Debrah van Zyl who currently live in Los Angeles and continue to co-direct the school. Apart from ordination and degree programs, All Paths offers certification courses such as a unique End of Life Sacred Companioning/ Death Doula class which will be held in-person in Cape Town over two weekends during April 2024.

Home to the ultimate therapeutic Mohair socks MOHAIR is a natural insulating fibre, expertly woven into our socks and blankets, offering therapeutic support for diabetes, rynaud’s syndrome, poor circulation and cold, sweaty feet.

Andre says: “There is an urgent need in our death-phobic society to demystify death and dying. A movement has emerged of Death Doula/Midwives, trained to facilitate these conversations and how to accompany the dying and their loved ones through this sacred passage”. This is an opportunity to be part of a solution for peace in the world, personally and professionally. I look forward to welcoming the first Africa Cohort to their soul’s calling.

Interview with Sarah Sun (Sacred Path Facilitator with the Red Tent, Sacred Plant Medicine and Womb Wisdom

Saba Zahara HoneyBush

How were you introduced to the Red Tent as an indigenous woman? I remember listening to the stories of about 20 women over there and realising that each one of their stories held a piece of my story. The realisation of that opened me up to the understanding that the truth was being spoken about the Feminine Rising and the seat of our wisdom which sits in our wombs. As an indigenous woman it was a mind blowing experience! I had never been spoken to or shared any wisdom of the womb before. To be woken up at a Red Tent Circle listening to how the womb is the seat of our wisdom and we can use it to navigate it - as the Ancients did and how we are modern indigenous women at the moment. It also gave me the clarification of what to do with my children because they were just stepping into their journeys as teenagers, just before their first bleed. So I didn’t really know how to prepare them. Understanding that there is an initiation ceremony, that all of us as women no matter what culture

we’re from, it’s been held away from us so that we don’t initiate our wombs to listen to what our hearts say. The medicine in the circle of the Red Tent is so powerful; people change and transform their own lives. The world was trying to make me feel crazy for tapping into my intuition. Using telepathy as a tool, I was ostracised and made fun of. People thought I was out there taking drugs when in actual fact the only drugs I’d been taking were pharmaceutical medicines. Where are you on your current healing journey? The space, which I found through plant medicine. I found the plant ally that I can take through for life. I used to think that this was Santa Maria which for most people’s consciousness it’s called Weed or Ganja, but I feel at this moment now that I’ve met the grandfather plant of Iboga or Ibogaine that all the other medicines I met before they were just the plasters for symptoms and triggers I couldn’t address because I couldn’t go deeper within on my own soul journey. I work with the plant and take other people on the same journey, exploring deeper into their spiritual journey and also hold space for them. I’ve been called to work with it which is how Shamans start.

NATURAL HEALER

Life’s Medicine

offering affordable AROMATHERAPEUTIC TREATMENTS

In 2023, the world is in grief over issues of war, climate change and a deep, pervasive loneliness of the spirit. The crises are real. And yet, there is also the presence of possibility and the indomitable resilience of the human spirit.

including massage, lymphatic drain & reflexology. Special price for pensioners. @ Novalis Ubuntu Centre

Life is a call and response, and I have come to respect the liturgy. It is time to conscientize our responses because the world is crying. To ignore the call is to feed the pattern of separation from each other and from all of life that has created such incalculable suffering.

Call Roderick @ 060 456 0509 to make your appointment.

The grief and loss of my year took my level of appreciation of its blessings to a new level. I want to respond meaningfully to Life’s pain, in gratitude and in deep prayer for the healing of my own wounds, and the world’s.

TAI CHI CHUAN

Natalie Wittwen teaches Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan, a practice that fuses both martial arts and meditation. Focus is on postural alignment and finding your inner peace by slowing down your mind and body. In additiom, the art of Tai Chi is used to help improve balance.

War: How do we respond to the grief and destruction in the world? I took a Death Doula class online with All Paths Divinity School, and learned to deepen my response to those around me who are suffering. I also learned to honour the dead, consciously spending time in the presence of the Ancestors, and learning from them through the stories of their lives.

Classes offered in Gardens, Rosebank, Milnerton and Constantia Contact Natalie: 072 400 4329 natalie.wittwen@gmail.com

Climate Change: Flight builds a hefty carbon footprint and mitigating that footprint has been a burden on my heart. Planting trees, gifting trees, loving trees: contributing at least one for every flight, or as many as economically possible, seems the least I could do.

Hamba Kahle Zanemvula

Loneliness: We know that all of life is interconnected, interdependent. We are all part of the human family and when we treat each other as such, love flows and magic happens. We are the medicine we need. May your medicine be powerful… Wishing you well, holidays!

Interview with Yoga Instructor Amanda Ramcharitar Saba Zahara HoneyBush Who are you, Amanda Ramcharitar? My teachings draw from many traditions of Hatha Yoga in the form of Iyengar, Ashtanga and Prana Vinyasa, all of these help open a gateway into our inner freedom. Along with these Asana based traditions, I’ve studied a multitude of philosophical understandings that help move one into mental freedom through meditation. With 20 years’ experience and over 10,000 hours of teaching, I am forever a student of the incredible subject of Yoga and love to share the keys to unlock our natural free state of being.

What are the 12 universal spiritual guiding principles that seem to extend to all reaches of cultures throughout the planet, no matter time or creed? We can find guidelines in the Buddhist 8 Fold Path, Christian/ Muslim 10 commandments, and African/Ancient Khemit 42 laws of Maat, Yogic 8 Limb System, many Native/Earth systems, and the multitude of Indigenous 1st nations of the earth, who honour the full pantheon from stars to critters underneath our feet. We truly have a wealth of guidelines to draw from to live a full and abundant life.

What is the first thing you’d tell a beginner to do who’s never done Yoga before and why? This question makes me laugh, because I often wonder if I had not found yoga what kind of person I would be today? Definitely not as clear psychologically, not as healthy physiologically, and wouldn’t feel life as deeply as I do. So I’d ask the new to Yoga person, is this what you want? It just takes a little effort, honesty and commitment to one’s health. With just a small dip into the Yoga practise a person will find long term benefit. By correctly performing basic Asana postures once a week, breathing correctly once a week, one can have a significant positive overall impact on one’s health and wellbeing.

Currently we are experiencing a period in time where humans are living out of harmony and thus are seeing what this type of disharmony brings. These are 14 principles of my own personal mystical experience that I put together in a small book called “Breathing from the Bones”. It has now turned into a Yogic self-practice course I run annually.

How does Yoga in your experience help heal physical and or mental/spiritual illnesses? Speak to us on the medicine of Yoga please? Slowly through life we lose connection with our inner nature of what makes our heart beat, which literally sends the blood to our toes and fingers, this force that keeps us standing upright. As our excitement in life wanes, our thoughts lead us towards despair, we either look for ways to numb our sadness, or ways to fill up the excitement which society provides in numerous ways, but yet comes up short as we find ourselves back into a state of discontentment over and over again. To be at peace and content in our every moment is what the long term Yoga practice helps heal, where the disconnect originates is what causes mental, physical and spiritual illness.

These are the key points: 1. Our Body, Our Temple – our bodies are the centre of our existence. 2. Clarity of Heart and Mind – Meditate 3. Turn Worry into Imagination – Play 4. Find What You Love and Become Dedicated – Enthusiasm is the fuel of dreams 5. Adjust Life by Intuition – the 6th sense is beyond the intellect 6. Trust Synchronicity – Coincidence is how we experience unity. 7. Align to Nature – Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication. 8. Being True – When heart, mind, body are aligned we are at our most authentic. 9. Compassion for Oneself – Kindness begins with our inner nature first. 10. Contentment in the Moment – Contentment is our nonfluctuating state. 11. Study This Deeper Nature – The nature of life is a great mystery, keep noticing it. 12. A Time for Bliss – Become comfortable with silence, it offers keys to bliss. 13. Celebrate Your Existence – There is no other you. 14. Breathe from The Bones – The answers are felt deep within.

How do you change peoples’ lives on your Yoga Retreats & Intensive Workshops? Yoga retreats and intensives provide a moment to restart, go within, to press pause on the outward life and move inward. Retreats also provide the opportunity to connect with others on the journey.

Amanda operates and offers daily Yoga classes in Kommetjie, as well as workshops/intensives and retreats throughout the year. She will offer a 3 day self-practice course at Bodhi Khaya retreat center this May 2024. Find further info at www.amandaramcharitaryoga.com or amandaramcharitaryoga@gmail.com.

Is Yoga only for a certain body type? Absolutely not! One just has to go to India to see how Yoga serves all body types and walks of life from a 3-year-old to a 90-year-old Sadhu on pilgrimage. I currently teach from the age of 8 – 80 in Kommetjie.
