Mid-Winter Greetings
We trust that you are all keeping warm and dry, no doubt many are preparing for the Winter School holidays. May all our readers who are Parents enjoy this break too.
So much rain! We are grateful for the Cape dams filling up – as many of us remember the challenges that arose from the ‘drought’. We are grateful for the reduced ‘load shedding’ over the past two weeks, and we pray that this will allow us all to continue to re-balance, restore and re-invigorate our bodies, minds and hearts moving towards the Spring Season of 2023.
Thank you to our existing healers, service practitioners and consciousness coaches who have put themselves out there to assist individuals with restoring natural wellness. Thank you for choosing Link Up to communicate your presence and service to our local community. You matter to all of us! Natural Health and Wellbeing is important for everyone.
We trust that you will enjoy reading the articles, and that you may have more time to read this winter. Rev Berry Behr gladly offered her experience inspiring us all and reminding us of the ‘Creative Force’. We thought to add – ‘A letter to my Friend’ – Charlotte offered to write to and on behalf of her generation on ‘menstruation’; and Fadeela who is involved with parenting, education, healing and many schools in the Western Cape, was inspired to write for our newsletter – look for ‘RAND-OM’.

Despite the slowing down of pace, and the natural hibernation during Winter in the Cape, go check out the Calendar of events, and/or you may feel inspired to try new things springing up in our magazine.
We wish to honour the Life and Work of Evelyn Lyle-Goss, who ran The Natural Wellness Clinic in Claremont for many years. She expanded her services to include Somerset West, and also Fish Hoek where she lived with her family. Sadly Evelyn passed away on the 9th June. She will be missed by our community. Her wisdom and experience in the field of natural health was legion. We enjoyed her participation in many meetings and initiatives of The Link Up Magazine. She had a lively vibrancy about her and a passion for Natural Health. May we continue to be inspired by her passionate Spirit for Life and Natural Health.
We wish all our readers, advertisers, friends and associates, a pace that is grace-filled and restoring of bodies, minds and hearts from the inside out during these last weeks in Winter.
Warm regards, Keep warm and dry, Anne-Lise

Creative Force – a case for the future
Creative Force, the primal creative power, is flowing through and around our Universe every second of every day. It does not know boundaries of time, space, fear or limitations of imagination.
It only wants someone to play with, and when humans play by its rules, miracles happen.
Somewhere around the middle of last year, I started to sense that “Something else” was wanting to emerge into my life. I resisted.
Then something inside me started to wilt, and I began to feel classic signs of burnout. I had no concentration capacity, I struggled to keep track of simple tasks, nothing made sense, and my sleep and good humour seemed to have left me. Although I was in constant (desperate) conversation with Spirit, spiritual practice became a challenge. Various attempts to rebalance my life didn’t work. Finally, recognising that I had nothing left to contribute in that context, I left my job and surrendered to the whims of an unstable world.
It wasn’t enough. Spirit asked me to trust enough to relinquish everything that I had regarded as solid foundations of my life. I became homeless - although never without sanctuary. I became dependent on my loved ones; and finally, Spirit showed me that even that which I regarded as my life purpose was no longer mine to do. In a year which includes my 60th birthday, a significant coming of age, I was asked to detach from everything that gave my life structure. It was an almighty and painful release.
Fortunately for me, I have an innate curiosity to see what will happen next, and although the six months of uncertainty were challenging, I knew the power and importance of surrender. I sat with choices I had made, and wondered if I was beyond redemption. I realised how my drive to serve community had hurt some of my closest relationships, and caused me to be not present to people as dear to me as my own heartbeat. Determined to shift gear, refocus, and do better, I accepted my losses and went about exploring a new path that I imagined would be quieter.
Spirit had other plans. There is an incubation time for any Creative Process, and sometimes all Spirit requires of us to completely let it go so that Spirit can just get on with its work.
The immense project that Spirit has laid before me required this deep process of trust; looking back, I realise that parts of the process were seeded years ago, long before I even imagined myself as an interfaith minister or knew anything about interfaith engagement. As I step now into the pioneering role of Global Interfaith Ambassador for Emissaries of Divine Light South Africa and EDL International, I am humbled beyond measure at the task ahead of me. Simultaneously, I am filled with gratitude and light at the creative opportunities and collaboratiive possibilities that have landed in my field.
I have learned that every voice, no matter how harsh, is the Voice of God. My task and yours is simply to sit and listen deeply, go within, sit with the grief and loss of change and finally, surrender. In the silence and in the void, the most true Voice of God will whisper into life that which wants to emerge. This is the Creative Force of the Universe, the One Tone. This is the way of miracles.
Rev. Berry Behr

GROW YOUR OWN SPROUTS
Are you wanting a source of food that is organic, bursting with nutrients and enzymes, free from pesticides, available year round, delicious, and kind to your budget?
Look no further! Sprouts are easy to grow, you can choose the quantity you produce and you don’t even need a garden! Just a spot on your kitchen counter will do.
Sprouts are the growing shoots of seeds so are rich in enzymes, chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals and amino acids, all necessary for growth and providing us with nutrients vital for health and to help guard against degenerative processes. This is a good reason to include sprouts in our diet as the modern diet is implicated in many diseases.
How do I go about growing my own sprouts?
Start with fresh, unhulled seeds: alfalfa, lentils, mung beans and chickpeas are among the easiest to grow. Remember to buy food source seeds from the grocery store and not ones for planting from the nursery as those have been treated and are not edible. Place a small quantity in a wide-mouthed glass jar, cover with clean water and soak, usually overnight. The seeds will swell so make sure the jar is big enough! Cover the jar opening with mesh, empty out the water, rinse the seeds and empty out that water, too. Leave the mesh on and the jar angled so that the water will drain. You do not want the seeds

sitting in water or they may rot. Rinse the seeds twice a day for 2 to 4 days. By day 2 you should see the shoots emerging. When they are ready, rinse again and store in the fridge, right way up. To enhance the chlorophyll content, you can place your sprouts in the sunlight for a few hours.
Yummy ideas for sprouts
Sprouts are at their tastiest and most nutritious when raw. Add them to salads, to sandwiches, vegetable juices or use as garnish. You can also add them to stir fries and omelettes.

A letter to my Friend
“Menstruation” – the most pivotal change for girls becoming women. Women bleed without violence, and this phenomenon stops when a life is being created; and also when a woman’s body stops birthing babies; then it’s called ‘menopause’.
If you take the average time that a woman bleeds, in a 28 day cycle (a lunar cycle), it can add up to 10 years of a women’s life, I think a topic worth talking about again.
During ancient and tribal times, all women’s cycles synchronized as they would gather and return proteins, iron, vitamins & minerals to re-fertilize the soil. This was a ritual to also energetically connect with the land.
Modern society expects women to show up every day and perform 100%. These values have most probably come out of a dominant masculine orientated culture. This demand limits our awareness of our bodies and our fluctuating energy flows, which often leads to increased pains and depression during the menstrual period.
What can help ?
Did you know that you can holistically reduce period pains and be more relaxed by adding the following into your body system – Magnesium, Cinnamon, Ginger, Lavender and Heat.?
Furthermore, our creative biological and psychological cycle parallels the phases of the moon. Recent research has found that the immune system of the reproductive tract is cyclic as well, reaching its peak at ovulation, before beginning to wane again.
Seed Cycling, which means eating specific seeds during the 2 main phases of your menstrual cycle, can help promote a healthy balance of estrogen and progesterone levels which may benefit your body during each phase.
During menstruation (in winter) start with 1-2 tablespoons ground flax seeds and 1-2 tablespoons ground pumpkin seeds during winter and spring. During your winter you are called to eat more iron, omega-3, and magnesium-rich foods. Why not experiment with this safe method and adapt to your body’s needs?
As women, we have access to parts of our often unconscious selves that are less available at all other times of the month. In fact, it has been shown experimentally that the right hemisphere of the brain –the part associated with intuitive intelligence – becomes more active during the pre-menstrual cycle, while the left hemisphere becomes less active.
In winter, menstruation is about withdrawing, introspection, reflection, connecting to inner wisdom. Letting go of the possibility to life and shedding who you were going to be (a mother/ women/ partner), inviting you to discover how you wish to create next.
Journal prompts:
• What has been coming up for you mentally and emotionally ?
• Can you identify certain patters in your cycle?
• What patterns do you want to let go of at the end of this cycle?
• What new ideas & impulses do you want to incorporate into your next cycle?
Menstruation is something to be celebrated, not feared. We would love to hear from you what helped you to connect deeper with yourself; you may include holistic treatments that ease period pains, to assist others manage this cycle better. Charlotte Mostert

RAND-OM
In this newsletter, I want you to continue reading aloud. Yes. You heard me. This is that kind of writing that’s best heard and spoken, so that your eyes and your ears form a double tunnel of understanding connecting to your beautiful mind.
Parents and educators speak about the three R’s in education. Reading, writing and Rithmetic. Have you heard of it? See, this is why you are reading this aloud. You get to roll those Rs, Rrrrr! And of course, it’s spelling looks wrong. Did you hear that, another R? The three Rs work because it’s easier to remember in a rapping kind of way. Hope you enjoying the Rs. Sound off!
I’m going to introduce you to another R word: Random.
If you’ve stopped reading aloud, now’s a good time to start again. We are a cross cultural, multilingual school. Listen to the word Random. It can sound like rand-aummm. That amazing vibratory chant known by yogis and westerners alike as a sound of the Divine . Or if you Afrikaans speaking you know the word rand is also rand and om is a that speaks to ‘gee om’, ‘om-trent’, ‘draai om’. SO as sounds go the word random deconstructed gives us quite a, translatory jive. Stay with me while I introduce another phrase to this dancing word. Using your brilliant imagination give me a drum roll for… RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS.
Now this next bit may seem random, but I’m going to invite you to remember a time like your birthday, when everyone who knew about your birthday, wished you a ‘Happy birthday!’
Remember that sleep the night before, the planning, the excitement, the imaginings as you drift off to the lala of dreamland.
And as you open your eyes on your very own new year, you start the day with all sorts and sounds of joy. Like presents, yummy colourful cakes, blowing up balloons, blowing out candles, singing, birthday wishes, choices... Everyone’s wishing you and you feel sooo special. Now that kind of happy birthday is possible because people around you were doing things you love, and giving you what they think you’d love, and you were being celebrated with those you love.
Imagine that feeling being a random happy. I’ll explain. Can you remember a time when you were not expecting anything, and it wasn’t your birthday, and someone surprised you, and made you feel happy?
The word random when you think about it, seems to have no direct cause and effect. No obvious reason as a casual link.
What if you, yes you, were the cause of someone feeling happy for no particular reason except that doing happy, makes happy, causing effect.
So I’m about to challenge you, to get your game on, to level up!
Can you use your power of imagination, your habits of heart and mind, to think of random ways of what will or what can, possibly, make someone, anyone, happy?
Starting here, starting now.
Random acts of Kindness are a beautiful way of showing that you value someone and more importantly, that you value kindness. And kindness makes that warm fuzzy inkling feeling of birthday mornings.
What if you were the person that actively looked for any moment, made any moment, a possibility and potential for that happy happening?
What if you were the person who brought an extra slice of bread, or stayed a little longer to help, or carried someone’s heavy bag, or picked up a paper someone dropped or gave someone’s sad face a compassionate smile. What if you lingered just a little longer to say something kind, to offer your seeing something beautiful that was a little different, what if you were that person who joined that not so popular person sitting alone on the playground? What if you helped someone get an answer right, or encouraged when the answer was wrong, or gave someone a chance to win, for a change, or offer an affirmation when they did manage in a moment to improve or overcome? What if you simply looked for reasons and moments in your day to activate a happy, belonging and connected heart? What if we practiced ubuntu with a practical seeing of sawubona? ... RAND-OM continued……
What if words like ‘mankind’ was actually to include all people in remembering that we are all of the same kind, and what makes you happy is a good guess to what could possibly make me happy too. What if that same kind of thinking spread one act at a time, one person at a time, one home or class at a time, one school at a time.
Let’s start here at Schools where I visit.
I challenge us All: parents, educators, learners… to value random acts of kindness like we value one Rand as currency. And while one Rand may not seem like much, when we pay attention to heartmind matters, kindness appreciates and our values are seen. (Yes, playing with currency discourse, of course.) We show interest and we gain interest and the love currency in our school
becomes invaluable. We make happy moments by fueling our moral economy one RANDom act of KINDness at a time, while we learn our three Rs. And as learning and evolution goes, we add a fourth R to reinforce what we all need: Rrrreasons to feel good As we learn.
So rise to surprise! Turn the randauummm! Draai iemand se dag om! Activate your own happy to ripple and cascade in and through our corridors. Let’s make this contagious. Keep smiling as you stop reading aloud and go make someone’s day one random act of kindness at a time! Yay!
