SUMMER 2018
SUCCESS DOESN’T HAPPEN BY ACCIDENT Strategic Planning Delivers Real Results Dear Neighbors, This is an exciting time for the City of Des Plaines. We are experiencing steady economic and residential growth in our community; the City’s reduction of debt has led to a healthy fund balance; and infrastructure improvements continue to build community confidence in public services. These achievements didn’t happen by accident, but, instead, they are the result of a broader shared vision and plan. In 2013, the City’s elected officials held strategic planning sessions to identify specific goals to help steer the future of the community through 2018. For the last five years, budget decisions and strategies were directly linked to fulfilling one or more of those goals. The hard work that initially led to the development of the strategic plan was well worth the effort. Today, we have realized positive results in all categories of the 2013 – 2018 plan. The outcome served us well this spring when your elected officials met once again to review our progress over the past five years and develop a new strategic plan with goals to be met by 2022. The 2018-2022 Strategic Plan continues to support infrastructure improvements and maximize transportation assets; it establishes and supports more community events to strengthen community pride; and the plan strives for municipal excellence on two levels: Financial Stability: Responsibly overseeing public funds to maintain a healthy fund balance and essential services. Professional Leadership: Experienced leaders, dedicated staff, and excellent customer service practices committed to serving the community. The process of creating the 2022 Strategic Plan also gave us the opportunity to re-image what the “new normal” can look like from the perspective of today’s achievements in commercial and residential growth. Over the next four years, we’ll be working hard to implement strategies that will continue to enhance and support the character and unique assets of Des Plaines.
