Summer Events for the Entire Family Many of our local events in Des Plaines have become regional draws, with participation at an alltime high. Our neighbors in surrounding communities are taking notice, and there’s already a local buzz about what’s coming up this year.

The summer kicks off with the City’s annual Taste of Des Plaines event on June 16th and 17th. One of the most popular summer festivals in the area, families, friends and neighbors from all around the Chicagoland area attend this free two-day event featuring great food from ten local restaurants, live entertainment on two stages, a wine and beer garden courtesy of Rivers Casino, and a large family area with free activities including a rock-climbing wall, gaming truck, petting zoo, classic car show and much more!

The fun continues as our 10-week “Friday Nights Live!” series begins the following weekend and continues every Friday night through August 25th. Grab a bite to eat at the Tap House Grill, Pot Belly’s, Giordano’s, Forever Yogurt or Panera Bread, or bring your own picnic to enjoy.

I have been proud to serve and represent Des Plaines, and have been humbled by your support and grateful for the opportunities and challenges over the last eight years.

Thank you to my husband, Rich, who supported me while I gave the time and attention necessary to fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of City Clerk, including community outreach to connect the residents to their government.

Thank you to the residents who elected me. Your emails, notes, compliments and words of encouragement will always be remembered.

A big round of applause and thank you to the professional staff who assisted me in making this office the best it can be. To my appointed staff, the City Manager, Assistant City Manager, department heads, and numerous employees who were a tremendous help in making the Clerk’s office shine, I thank you. I will always remember your kindness and willingness to work together to do what it takes to make our City look good and better serve our residents.

Your City Clerk Community News & Updates Sign Replacement Program Begins

In 2017, the City is planning to implement the first year of a 10-year, citywide sign replacement program. The program was developed in response to federal requirements establishing the minimum retroreflectivity levels for traffic signs. Retroreflectivity refers to the way in which a sign reflects light, and is a measure of a sign’s visibility to drivers at night.

The City of Des Plaines utilizes about 8,600 traffic signs. To accommodate the large amount, the City was divided into ten sign districts, each encompassing a roughly equivalent number of signs. Signs will be replaced within one district each year, beginning with District 1 at the north side of the City this spring/summer.

The various regulations on neighborhood streets (e.g., stop control, parking restrictions, one-way patterns, etc.) are not proposed to be changed as part of this project. However, some changes will occur in the specific types and locations of signs in order to comply with current Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards, many of which have changed since existing signs were installed.

As with any work that involves disturbance below the ground, J.U.L.I.E. (Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators) utility locates are required before new sign posts are installed. Residents will see utility markings in the parkway areas as work progresses through the district.

Public Works & Engineering Department Public Works Branch Collection Program Public Works & Engineering will be collecting branches through the third Monday in September. Please see the schedule in this article, refer to the 2017 Community Calendar, or call 847.391.5464 for more information.

To prepare for collection, branches must be on Branch Collection Schedule the parkway by 7:00 A.M. on the first day of your zip code collection week (there will be only one Zip Code 60016 collection each month).

Your Fire Department Frequently Asked Questions The Fire Department frequently receives questions related to how the organization operates or why certain procedures exist. To maintain scene safety and perform needed tasks at accidents, including traffic control, vehicle/machinery extrication, spill control, and flame prevention/suppression.

A patient in cardiac arrest requires a minimum of five rescuers due to all the treatments and CPR (chest compressions are the most important treatment on this call and standards require the chest compressors to be rotated every two minutes). To get five rescuers to a scene, both vehicles are needed.

Checking smoke detectors twice annually can help save lives.

Never leave candles unattended, and keep them away from combustible items such as furniture, blankets, and curtains.

Avoid overloading electrical outlets and extension cords.

Summer Safety Tips Summer weather means cookouts, Fourth of July fireworks, and all sorts of fun as families across Des Plaines take advantage of the warm temperatures to get back in touch with the outdoors.

It is certainly relaxing to enjoy roasting marshmallows in the backyard fire pit, but it’s also important to ensure that everyone stays safe by observing a few simple fire prevention guidelines.

The Des Plaines Fire Prevention Bureau offers these fire safety tips to enjoy the summer months ahead: When using a fire pit, keep a garden hose or a bucket of water handy. Having water nearby is a great first response tool to keep a fire under control.

Sparklers might seem “low risk,” but the reality is that there aren’t any fireworks out there that are safe enough for children or adults. Each year, numerous burn injuries are reported across the country due to illegal fireworks and sparklers, which actually burn at 2000 degrees.

Do not let barbecue grease build up. Whether you’re using a charcoal or a gas grill, it’s important to keep it clean to prevent accidental grease fires.

Inspect the area around your barbecue grill.

You do not want to grill anywhere near other flammable materials.

When you are done with the fun, put out the flames.

Residents really should dump water and/or sand on those fire pit embers before leaving the yard, and the same goes for barbecues. Close your propane valve and the unit’s lid, as well as any vents on a charcoal grill, once you’re done. Unsupervised barbecues can easily tip over in the wind, or have combustible materials blown against them.

City Stormwater Management Efforts How can stormwater pollution occur?

Everything that flows into the storm drains (including fertilizers, pet waste, oil, automotive fluids, paint and pesticides) goes directly into our creeks and rivers without being treated. Help reduce stormwater pollution by keeping storm drains clear of debris and reducing your use of pesticides.

How is soil erosion controlled?

Understand Your Flood Risk Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) are developed

by FEMA to illustrate flood risks throughout the country. These maps are available from FEMA’s website at msc.fema.gov.

The City’s Engineering Division can review the FIRM for you to determine if a property is located within the regulatory floodplain. A letter stating the risk of flooding for a particular property can be provided to the current property owner.

You may have noticed fabric fences and Sediment Retention Fiber Rolls (SRFRs) around dirt piles on construction sites. When it rains, rainwater can erode the exposed dirt, and soil particles are carried into our downstream rivers.

Fabric fences and other erosion control measures filter sediment out of the stormwater runoff, protecting the quality of water in our creeks and rivers. They also filter oil, grease, and other contaminants out of the rainwater to keep those pollutants out of our waterways. To report land disturbances without erosion control, call Code Enforcement at 847.391.5380.

You can request a floodplain determination letter for any property within the City, free of charge. Please use the form on the City’s website under Floodplain Information or call 847-391-5390 to request a floodplain determination.

Q&A

A Note About Insurance

If you feel that your home has been incorrectly mapped within FEMA’s regulatory floodplain, you can apply for a Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA).

If your home meets FEMA’s requirements, the LOMA process will remove it from the regulatory floodplain.

If your property is located within the regulatory floodplain and you have a mortgage from a federally regulated or insured lender such as a bank or credit union, flood insurance will be required.

Can a property ever be removed from the regulatory floodplain?

Typically, an Elevation Certificate from a licensed surveyor is needed to complete the LOMA paperwork. Go to FEMA’s website (www.fema.gov) for more information or contact the Engineering Division at 847.391.5390.

Des Plaines has participated in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for nearly 30 years. As a result, flood insurance is available for any property in the City limits.

If you have a flood insurance policy, check if you have contents and sewer backup coverage. During the kind of flooding that happens in Des Plaines, there is usually more damage to the furniture and contents than there is to the structure.

The Des Plaines History Center invites you to view two new exhibits that will be open to the public through December 2017, “My Muse, Des Plaines” and “Images of the Kinder House.”

“My Muse, Des Plaines” is a collaborative project curated by volunteers on topics of their own choosing. The exhibit includes sections that reveal the history of the Northwest Highway S-curve, examine the unique features of the Lustron homes in Des Plaines, portray a history of the Meyer family of Des Plaines, and compare photographic images depicting Des Plaines “then and now.”

“Images of the Kinder House” celebrates the History Center’s 50th anniversary as an organization dedicated to the collection, preservation, and interpretation of the history of Des Plaines and its people. The Center provides access to those resources through exhibits, educational programs and research facilities.

The Kinder House was built in 1907 for the Benjamin F. Kinder family, and it has been a museum since 1969.

Inspiring artists, needle crafters, and illustrators of all ages, the Kinder House serves as an iconic emblem of Des Plaines history.

The 2017 exhibit, “Images of the Kinder House” displays several creative interpretations of this unique structure in Des Plaines.

More Community News

Once again, we would like to announce the 30th Annual Community Paint-A-Thon in September 2017. While the date is a long way off, applications are now available!

To qualify, homes must be owned and occupied by people with limited financial resources and homeowners must meet specific qualifications.

Once a home is determined eligible, volunteer teams are matched to do the scraping, priming and painting of the house.

DP311 Mobile App: Have You Signed Up Yet? The City’s new DP311 mobile app has proven to be a great success. With well over 225 completed requests since its launch last November, this app is proving to help residents and business owners communicate with the City in a whole new way.

The Community Paint-A-Thon covers ten townships including Barrington, Elk Grove, Hanover, Maine, New Trier, Niles, Northfield, Palatine, Schaumburg, and Wheeling. Current Homeowners Insurance is also required.

Appropriately named “DP311,” citizens are now able to report concerns and ask questions “on the go” from the ease of their mobile devices.

Downloading the app on an iPhone or Android phone allows users to view a list of our most popular requests and even submit questions about specific topics.

The app also communicates when the status of the request changes, from “received” by one of our staff, through “completed” when entered into our work order system for action.

If you prefer to access the same request system on our website, just visit www.desplaines.org/DP311 to take advantage of everything the mobile app offers: the DP311 request portal, City Map Gallery, Virtual City Hall access, and popular FAQs. All this in the convenience of your home or office.

The The Frisbie Frisbie Senior Senior Center Center Since 1976, the Frisbie Senior Center has been responding to the ever-evolving needs of the senior population living in the northwest suburbs, providing a warm, welcoming atmosphere that allows for congregation, social interaction, and encouragement of healthy, as well as active, lifestyles. Membership is open to anyone ages 55 or older; new members are always welcome.

Although membership is not required to participate in programming, a daily activity fee will be charged for non-members. If you would like more information about the Des Plaines Meals-On-Wheels program, our Benefits Enrollment Center or SHIPs program, or any other program offered at the Center, either visit our website (www.frisbieseniorcenter.org) or contact the Center directly at 847.768.5944.
